Orebodies with intricate three- dimensional shapes (such as porphyry molybdenum deposits) are difficult to model using geostatistics or other computer- assisted methods. 'The strong trends in their spatial grade distributions occur as mathematically complex shapes and prevent the customary assumption of local stationarity that is required for accurate ore reserve estimation. "Zoned Kriging", a new method developed by AMAX, solves this problem directly by using the geologist's interpretation of the ore zones as a parameter in the kriging equations. The geological basis and methods used in the Climax ore zoning technique are reviewed and discussed relative to their application in zoned geostatistical modeling. The Zoned Kriging technique is described and demonstrated using data typical of mineral de- posits.

The tin deposit of Monserrat, Bolivia, consists of one major vein 1600 m in length. The ore is unusual because of the notable quantity of teallite, even though cassiterite is the principal tin mineral. The deposit, formed at shallow depth under a wide range in temperature, may be classed as xenothermal. Polished sections reveal a complex history of replacement, with low-temperature minerals deposited before high-temperature minerals.

A WIDE variety of metalliferous deposits in Peru shows a close and consistent relationship to intrusive and extrusive igneous rdcks. This relationship furnishes a clue to the comp(osition of ore-bearing fluids and to the timing in separation of these fluids from differentiation magma Conclusions presented here are based on ten years' study of a large number of metalliferous deposits in Peru. The most important of these areas are shown in Fig. 1. The principle of "bed blending" in the agglomeration of materials is about 56 years old, but de- spite all education via technical papers, operating reports and results from functioning installations, the concepts of blending are still somewhat vague. Confusion exists between "mixing", "blending," and the basic role of each. The terms "blending" and mixing" are often used interchangeably, yet they describe two different processes. As properly understood and applied, a blend is a combination of different varieties of material which produces a desired quality, or the mingling of different elements to form a harmonious whole. In other words, blending is a process of combining granular materials by mechanical means, wherein the final product, or a portion thereof, must contain an exact proportional amount of every one of the several different materials which contributed to the mass and wherein all particles are so thoroughly intermingled with each other as to have lost their individual identities and become a part of the whole so that when a portion of the blend is taken at any time it will be substantially identical, chemically and physically, to any other portion taken throughout.

The application of computers to the control and study of mineral processing operations such as grinding, classification and flotation has created an interest in simulation studies of these operations with mathematical models. Evidence of this interest is confirmed by papers presented at the 1969 International Computer Application Symposium held concurrently with the Fall Meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers in Salt Lake City, September 17-19, 1969. Proceedings of this symposium, entitled A Decade of Digital Computing in the Mineral Industry. were edited by Alfred Weiss and published by SME. Two sections of this book are devoted to computer application and simulation of mineral processing operations. In the area of comminution, several papers were presented at the International Computer Symposium. The size-discretized batch grinding model was described, and its application to the simulation of batch grinding, locked-cycle grinding and closed circuit grinding were discussed1. Freeh, Horst and Kellner2 approached simulation using a steepest ascent parameter-fitting technique, while Schoner3 considered the dependence of the elements of the mill matrix and classifier matrix on operating conditions, especially the feed rate.

The paper is divided into two parts. The first part describes an investigation of the effect of temperature on the conditioning and flotation of an ilmenite ore with a 1:l oleic acid-fuel oil mixture as collector. During conditioning the pulp underwent characteristic changes of flocculation, deflocculation and dispersion which were monitored by measuring the power consumption of the conditioner motor. Optimum flotation results were obtained at the end of the deflocculation period. High ilmenite recoveries were obtained at high temperatures and high concentrate grades at low temperatures. The second part of the paper describes a study of the effect of temperature on the adsorption of oleic acid at the ilmenite/water interface. At high adsorption densities it was chemical and exothermic. Contact angles showed that the hydrophobicity of the collector-coated minerals increased with an increase in temperature.

WITH the development of thin film techniques for the direct examination of metals in the electron microscope some new problems in quantitative metallography have become apparent. In order to obtain certain contrast effects in the electron optical image when examining thin films from alloys containing dispersed phases, it is essential to use films of a thickness at least two or three times greater than that of the mean particle diameter of the dispersed phase. THAT the amount of deformation and annealing time influences the recrystallization temperature of cold-rolled copper has been well established. Evidence that the recrystallization temperature can be affected by the deformation texture has been reported by Brick and Williamson,% ho found that copper straight-cold-rolled to 99 pct reduction to produce one deformation texture and copper cross-cold-rolled to 99 pct reduction to produce a second and different deformation texture correspondingly recrystallized at different temperatures to different textures. The purpose of the present work was to study more thoroughly the effect of the deformation texture on the recrystallization of cold-rolled copper. Experimental Procedure The copper used in this investigation was commercial OFHC copper (nominally 99.985 pct Cu) in the form of 0.500-in. plate. Qualitative spectro-graphic analysis showed only a slight trace of iron and a trace of silver. No analysis was performed to determine the exact content of the iron and silver,

THAT Colorado was producing oil and gas before the fields of the Mid-Continent were discovered is a fact too frequently overlooked. As early as 1862, oil was obtained in the Florence district (see Fig. 1) from seepages and shallow holes. The first well that could be regarded Fig. 1. as being truly commercial was drilled in this field in 1876. The field is now producing 100,000 bbl. per year, and is credited with a total production of approximately 11,000,000 bbl. The small field near Boulder, Boulder County, was opened in 1901; production has now practically ceased but the field is credited" with a total production of 610,000 bbl. Oil was discovered at Rangeley in 1901, and the field supports a small local refinery at the present time. The basic cement making process is outlined relative to the fuel but chemically sensitive suspension preheater (SP) kiln which made its debut in the early 50s. The SP history is trailed through the process disasters of the late 50s; identification of chemical sensitivities in the 60s; and resurgence of the SP together with development of its stepchild process, the precalciner (PC) kiln, in the 70s. The current energy problem and related conversions to coal re-emphasize the process chemical sensitivity. Attention is focused on the basic problem of coal sulfur and ash variations and several solutions are presented.

The Coal Reparation Division of the Pittsburgh Mining Technology Center conducted an investigation to assess and compare the pyritic sulfur reduction potential of coal-pyrite flotation and high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). Tests were run on three coals - an Upper Freeport bed coal, a Lower Kittanning bed coal, and a Pittsburgh bed coal - to establish grade-recovery relationships characteristic of both processes. Representative portions of each coal sample were crushed to two top sizes-nominal - 500 pm (-35 mesh) and nominal - 149 pm (-100 mesh)-and subjected to conventional froth flotation. The froth product was then beneficiated by coal- pyrite flotation or HGMS, to provide a direct technical companion of the two processes. At - 500 pm (- 35 mesh), the size normally employed for coal flotation, both coal-pyrite flotation and HGMS effectively separated pyrite from coal, and the performance of the two processes was essentially the same. At a - 149 pm (- 100 mesh) sire, however, the performance of HGMS exceeded that of coal-pyrite flotation. The separation effected by HGMS were more efficient at - 149 pm (- 100 mesh) than at - 500 pm (- 35 mesh). On the other hand, it was concluded that either the effectiveness of coal-pyrite flotation decreases with diminishing top size or the process has not been optimized to treat material finer than 500 pm (35 mesh).

As used in connection with open-hearth or other high-temperature operations, "insulation" refers to a multitude of substances, natural or manufactured, that have the one principal property of preventing the flow of heat by conduction to a greater degree than refractories can prevent it, the principal properties of the latter being resistance to tem-perature and/or chemical action. The term "control" as commonly applied to the mechanization of management functions is inappropriate without qualification, for without some degree of control of every operation we could produce no steel worthy of the name. Although grouped together in this paper, insulation and control in open-hearth furnaces have little, if any, interrelationship, therefore the paper is made up of two distinct parts.

Plans are moving ahead toward the July 1965 start-up date for Kaiser Steel Corp.’s new pelletizing plant at its Eagle Mountain, Calif., iron mine. Capacity will be 2 million long tons of pellets containing 65% Fe. A major portion of the output is scheduled for charging into Japanese blast furnaces as the result of a contract to supply Mitsubishi interests with 10.8 million tons of pellets over a six-year period. Kaiser's concentrating plant at Eagle Mountain plus sintering facilities at Fontana are adequate to meet the requirements of its blast furnaces, which, as a consequence, are not expected to take any substantial quantity of pellets during this period. However, some 200,000 tons of pellets per year is scheduled to be used for the production of special steels and in the open hearths as a substitute for the high-cost ores now being used.

During wet grinding the electrochemical interactions between grinding media and pyrrhotite not only accelerate media wear but also adversely affect the suede mineral's flotation response. A possible remedy of the adverse effects on floatability by applying electric potentials to grinding media was examined. Flotation tests, Auger electron spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to study pyrrhotite surface properties. Although anodic polarization of the steels increased metal loss by corrosion, pyrrhotite flotation recovery was increased. In the case of cathodic polarization, flotation recovery improved somewhat in a narrow range of overpotentials. At higher cathodic overpotentials, however, mineral floatability was progressively lowered although the corrosive wear of grinding media might be reduced.

In many metallurgical studies, it is necessary to reveal the composition and structural properties of materials. Usually this is done by etching, but some substances do not etch well or easily. Anodizing is known to provide an alternate treatment in many cases. In general, this technique is simple, often more sensitive to composition differences than etching, has excellent resolution, and provides variable contrast in those elements and alloys which anodize. Here we report the use of anodizing in diffusion studies in the TiCb system. Fig. 1 shows a cross section of the diffusion zone in a TiCb couple. The anodizing has clearly revealed both composition and crystallographic features. The maximum bulk penetration of the titanium into the columbium is marked by a sharp line because of the steep concentration gradient. The titanium grain size and orientation differences are also evident. Variation in the grain size reflects the gradually decreasing columbium concentration.
