The pollution of our water supply, Lake Michigan, is a continuing threat so long as our overflows from combined sewers exist. The problems have become even more acute during recent years, due to the increase of paved area- which accelerates and enlarges the flows of storm water. After each storm, mixtures of raw sewage and storm water spill into our waterways. If the storm is too large for the drainage systems, the mixture backs up into our streets and basements. Under severe conditions, it may even become necessary to open the locks, and discharge the polluted water into Lake Michigan. Consider the scope of the problem, as shown in Figure 1. The area in which combined sewers exist is 375 square miles, located in the central parts of Chicago and 49 suburbs. There are an estimated 640 overflow outlets to the waterways, each requiring attention. The capacity of outlets tributary to the waterways has increased dramatically over the years. Each time a pocket of upstream flooding is drained into the channels, the problem of its rapid disposition increases. Another difficulty is that the bottom of our waterways is covered with a blanket of accumulated sludge, ranging in depth up to 3-feet. Potassium, lithium, strontium, barium, and manganese are present in many oilfield brines, None of them except barium is determined routinely in brine analyses. Therefore, sensitive and accurate flame-spectrophotometric methods were developed. Potassium, lithium, and strontium were determined by a standard-addition technique in ethyl alcohol solutions. Barium and manganese were determined in ethyl alcohol and normal propyl solutions, respectively, after interfering substances were removed.

Investigations of world wide coal face strata control practice, the study of theoretical calculations and detailed engineering analysis have been combined to design and select a powered roof support suitable for use in conjunction with the extraction of 4.5-m (14.7- ft) of the 7.5-m (24.6-ft) thick Warwickshire Thick Coal Seam. The interface between geotechnical criteria and engineering design has been closely considered along with the following 3 important factors: Firstly, the need to further improve strata control and operational characteristics whilst producing a wall integrated overall face design. Secondly, to enable the supports to be rapidly transported from face to face in roadways driven at the minimum size for operational requirements. Finally, to provide hydraulic power, automatic control and monitoring systems which will improve operations reduce manpower requirements and improve management information. Clear design requirements were determined in order to allow selection on a commercial basis. A method of tendering is described with the subsequent analysis and selection process. In the event oversupply of coal in the UK resulted in the order not being placed. Brief consideration has been given to supports suitable for reserves to be mined In a few year's time where there is potential for extraction well in excess of 4.5-m (1 4.74.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research at the 9-Right Section of the Olga Mine to determine the cause of bumps and aid in the development of appropriate control techniques. The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors which affect the occurrence of bumps at the Olga Mine. These factors have been broken down into two categories, in situ and mining related. The in situ factors include those conditions which exist prior to mining, such as variations in lithology and overburden, presence of jointing, the composition and the physical properties of the rock, and the original stress field existing in the coalbed and adjacent strata. The mining factors include the mining sequence, changes in stress in the coalbed and adjacent strata during mining, rates of convergence, and the pattern of failure of the coal and adjacent strata. The factors which appeared to have the greatest effect on bumping were the overburden, the lithology of the roof and floor rock and the physical properties of the rock. The roof rock is generally a massive, stiff sandstone which does not break until coal pillar extraction is complete. The immediate floor is a strong shale which generally grades into siltstone and then into sandstone. The overburden at 9-Right ranged from 990 to 1,600 ft. Secondary factors appeared to be the in situ (pre-mining) stress and the mining sequence. When barrier pillars were split., pressures measured in hydraulic cells (Borehole platen flatjacks) located in those barriers showed large pressure increases, and the incidence of bumps increased, especially when the barriers were near old gob areas. The pillar extraction system used at Olga, where three rows of pillars are mined concurrently, appears to reduce pillar loads at the face areas, thereby reducing the exposure of men and equipment to the risks of bumps during mining operations. The horizontal components of in situ stresses at Olga were found to be nearly the same as those at 5 other mines in southern WV, where humps were not common, so it appears that horizontal in situ stress alone is not a major influence on bumping at the Olga Mine.

Equivalent elastic properties of discontinuously jointed rock masses are computed using a non-representative volume element(NRVE) approach within a three dimensional finite element program. Joint persistence, defined as the percentage of a joint plane that is actually occupied by joint material, is used in the NRVE computations as a step towards greater realism in stability analysis of mine openings. Persistence p is also the probability that a segment of a joint plane is occupied by joint material. Computations reveal a threshold phenomenon in jointed rock mass moduli similar to that observed in percolation theory. A rapid decrease in moduli occurs above a critical value pc(about 0.6). A detailed analysis of the well-known solution for stress about a circular opening in isotropic, elastic ground illustrates the effects of joint set orientation, spacing and persistence. Although stable “on average”, joint segment failures reveal a threat to stability and point towards rational design of reinforcement or support of discontinuously jointed rock masses.

"Today, more than ever, drilling and blasting contractors are challenged to manage the ever-changing risks associated with blasting operations. New neighborhoods are encroaching upon mine sites and blasting projects are confronted with increasing scrutiny by permit issuing authorities and nearby residents disgruntled by new construction. The act of transporting explosives material to and from thejobsite is far from easy and trouble-free. At the same time, the pressure to stay in compliance with the growing number of government regulations continues to mount. While new tools and technology are appearing in the workplace to address some of these challenges, losses still occur. Can the datagenerated by this technology help drilling and blasting contractors make better decisions? While basic risk management principles are still applicable, do new tools and technology assist in the effort to prevent losses? What are the downsides? In this age of new technology, is face-to-face interaction still necessary? While technology is certainly a useful component in the drilling and blasting world, can it be helpful in defending claims?"

Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discovered in theJiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: 1. porphyry related; 2. metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and 3. sediment-hosted deposit.   The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, the chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

Tyres account for 25-30 per cent of the operating costs of large capacity haul units as used in open-cut mines.Tyre operating costs can be substantially reduced and often contained in real terms by applying knowledge that is now available.This paper describes certain specific advances in tyre management, namely batching, bias adjustment, cumulative plotting and the so-called "pressure-temperature" system of tyre pressure control, originated on the Mt Newman Mining Company's Newman minesite, and discusses the contribution that each has made to improving tyre management and reducing costs.

This paper presents the near-field rock damage owing to production blasting in limestone quarry in the western region of Japan. The study's purpose is to learn the mechanism of crack development due to blast vibration. In this study, blast vibration's magnitude was expressed with peak particle velocity (PPV) which was obtained based on seismographs recorded database. In attempt to pursue a research's purpose of this study, there were two considerable interests: near-field blast vibration propagation and prediction, and crack observed and prediction. Furthermore, with regards to considerable interest of the study, there were three essential aspects which were challenged, such as: monitoring and interpretation of seismic wave propagation in a rock mass near large explosive charge of production blast scale, measurement of blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole, and determine critical value of PPV which may produce significant rock damage. In order to determine precision critical PPV, understanding correlation between rock damage with vibration level is firstly important to be done. This paper also discusses how to measure, detect and quantify near-field blast vibration and blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole.

A 55' deep excavation encompassing almost a city block in London, Ontario required a lateral earth retention system to provide both temporary excavation support and a permanent groundwater cut-off wall for a proposed office complex. The system selected was an interlocking Drilled Shaft wall with 3-4 levels of tiebacks. The specifications required the system to be designed for movements or settlements around the excavation of ¼" max. Design to be by the Contractor with design parameters and a comprehensive soils report provided. An extensive system of instrumentation in the form of inclinometers and survey targets were used to monitor vertical and horizontal movements of the shoring system and adjacent properties. Introduction The project, One London Place, is a two phase office tower development in downtown London, Ontario. Phase one consists of a 24 storey office tower on the northwest part of the site, with five levels of below ground parking over the entire site "Figure 1". A second office tower will be constructed at a future date.

Electrical trailing cable used to power coal mining machinery is frequently damaged by tensile strain or crushing by mining machines running over the cable. A major problem is finding the exact location of a short or open in this cable so it may be repaired. FMC Corporation was awarded modification III to USBM Contract H0122011 to continue development and testing of cable fault locators, resulting in delivery of: 1. A prototype electrostatic/electromagnetic/ TDR transmitter and an electrostatic/electro-magnetic receiver sot that: o Locates cable faults by time domain reflectometry o Locates opens by detecting electrostatic signals o Locates shorts by electromagnetic coupling. 2. A prototype infrared detector and an infrared detector power supply that heats a shorted area by applying high current (at low voltage) and locating a short by infrared output. 3. Twelve production infrared detectors. 4. Detail drawings for all of the developed instruments.

SEVERAL serious accidents, which had occurred owing to the platman leaving the plat without first withdrawing the "chairs" from the shaft, set the writer scheming to devise a mechanically operated system which would obviate such accidents and be "fool-proof". It was obvious at the outset that some means of indicating to the engine-driver by the movement of the "chairs" themselves, whether they were "in" or "out" of the shaft, was necessary.An arrangement of signalling similar to railway semaphores was considered, but was rejected owing to the difficulties accruing from the large number of communicating wires which would be required down the shaft-viz., 2 for each level. After several experiments, a comparatively simple and efficient electrical system was devised, and which is covered by Commonwealth Patent TO. 10,402.One of the chief features of the apparatus is its simplicity, and its strongest point is the fact that both the engine-driver and platman receive visual indication of the position of the "chairs." The arrangement consists of a miniature coloured glow lamp, one for each level of each shaft compartment, arranged and placed beside the numbers and arrows corresponding to the various levels, on the winding engine indicators. "The handling and transportation of explosives and explosives supplies are inherently hazardous owing to their sensitiveness to impact and flame or electric arcs and sparks. Many accidents have occurred in the past during transportation of explosives, especially when they were carried by individual miners on man-trips. When electric haulage became the usual mode of transportation and shots were fired electrically, the hazards of carrying explosives and supplies on man-trips were fully realized, and in some mines all explosives were placed in one car, usually at the rear of the trip. Far-sighted managers saw the danger of this practice and provided separate trips for delivering explosives. This step was a definite advance in safety, but the latest achievement is the construction of special, rugged, nonconducting cars.Many coal-mining men have shown considerable interest in the construction of safe cars for explosives during recent months. Undoubtedly many others are interested in this phase of safety, therefore this circular is issued to give information on cars of this type now in use.Car A (fig. 1) is essentially a closed inner box separated from an outer box by an insulating lining of rubber. The double box is attached to a standard steel chassis that has spring journals and electric welding instead of certain rivets. The chassis is equipped with roller bearings. The over-all length from pin to pin is 11 feet, 9 inches; the wheel base is 54 inches, the track gage 42 inches, and the capacity eighteen 50-pound cases of permissible explosives. The box is 10 feet long, 6 feet wide, 3 feet high at the top of the arched roof, and 2 feet 9 inches at the edges. The top of the car is 46 inches above the top of the rail.The inner box is insulated from the outer box by two pieces of 1/4-inch switchboard.-insulating matting cemented together. To cover the top, two ends, two sides, and the bottom of the box requires 320 square feet of the l/4- inch matting.The walls are well-seasoned tongue-and-groove oak, 1 1/4 inches thick and 2 3/4 inches wide. A 1 1/4-inch air space is maintained by oak strips between the outer wall and the two thicknesses of 1/4-inch rubber matting. The inner box is made of 7/8-inch, well-seasoned, tongue-and groove oak fitted closely against the insulating matting. No nail, rivet, or bolt extends through the rubber insulation.The floor of the outer box is secured to the chassis by two sets of bolts through an intermediate piece of well-seasoned oak. One set of bolts is countersunk from the top of the intermediate piece of oak, and the other set is countersunk from the bottom. The countersunk portions are filled with ""insulate,"" an insulating compound. Adjacent bolts are at least 6 inches apart.The bed of the inner box is divided into six compartments by transverse strips of wood at the bottom and partitions near the roof. Each compartment accommodates three 50-pound cases of explosives. This arrangement prevents cases in adjacent compartments from touching, so that there is no possibility of end thrust of the entire load of explosives. Each inner compartment is 21 inches high, 5g inches long, and 16 1/4 inches wide. Separating strips at the floor are 3 inches wide and 1 1/4 inches thick. The outside dimensions of the 50-pound cases of explosives used are 17 1/2 inches long, 13 1/2 inches wide, and 12 1/2 inches high."

As far as is known at the present time, important ore occurrences at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart Shale. These occur at Mount Isa itself, and some 13 miles north along strike at the Northern Leases.The primary silver-lead-zinc and copper orebodies occur as adjacent but discretc entities in lithologieally distinct host rocks. The copper orebodies occur in an envelope of "Silica Dolomite", whereas the silver-lead zinc orebodies occur in shale typical of the Urquhart Shale in general.At both Mount Isa and the Northern Leases, secondary lead orebodies occur at thc surface representing primary stratiform silver-lead-zinc sulphide accumulations in the fresh rocks at depth.Secondary copper orebodies are known only at Mount Isa, where they have formed in favourable environments, but unlike the secondary lead orebodies, not in the positions of the former primary mineralization that gave rise to them. The secondary copper is localized in shale remote from the point where the copper was released into solution by weathering. It was derived from very low grade fracture fillings and disseminations of chalcopyrite in the outcropping or suboutcropping crest of the "Silica Dolomite".Primary silver-lead-zinc orebodies arc oxidized without significant transport or secondary enrichment, but secondary copper orebodies arc characterized by considerable transport and extreme secondary enrichment.The original water table stood at approximately 1,150 ft (mine datum) and for the majority of the mine area controlled the base of complete oxidation fairly closely.An oxidized zone approximately 175 ft deep is general in the Urquhart Shale.Structures affecting ground conditions have influenced oxidation and leaching of the silver-lcad-zinc orebodies, and have had effects vital to the formation of secondary copper orebodies.

SUMMARY The Witwatersrand quartzites in which South African gold mining operations are moat exclusively conducted, are notoriously difficult and costly to drill. Despite this situation, however, with the high cost of developing new mines and extending existing mines, together with the rising cost of labour and mining problems resulting from the ever-increasing depths of workings, the demand for raise-boring in these formations is increasing rapidly. Not only is the demand for raises and shafts increasing, but also the length and size of these excavations. Raise-boring studies carried out in South African gold mines have indicated that increased penetration rates and possibly reduced costs could be obtained if higher thrusts were available at the reaming head. Until fairly recently there has been no raise-boring machine suitable for underground use that possessed the thrust and torque characteristics necessary to achieve high penetration rates in hard abrasive quartzite formations and the cutters available were not really developed for high loading. In response to these requirements a raise-borer, the Robbins 83R was designed and built in Seattle, U.S.A. for the Anglo American Corporation. This machine is operating in South African gold mines and is currently being used at a depth of 12 000 ft below surface in one of the. Group's mines. The initial raises bored have substantiated that increased penetration is attainable at high thrust and it is now apparent that the machine is sufficiently versatile to drill raises of up to 12 ft in diameter in quartzite formation over a length of 2 000 ft.

Rock blasting in the project of “Site Formation and Associated Infrastructure Works at Choi Wan Road and Jordan Valley” is the largest urban blasting project in the history of Hong Kong and also is rare in the world. More than 6.2 million of in-situ rock has to be excavated by blasting. The site is located in the center area of eastern Kowloon peninsula, surrounded by highways, registered cut slopes, high-rise residential buildings, MTR subways and the public utilities. The complex situations bring great difficulties and risks to the blasting works. A bird-view photo of the site is shown on Picture 1.

"A Z1600 Jameson Cell Test Rig was rented for test work at Vale’s Clarabelle Mill operation. This paper discusses the evolution of renting the unit for test purposes to owning the unit and operating it as a revenue generating process component. The paper focuses on three aspects of the Z1600 project; the initial rental and installation, the test work performed in the cleaning circuit, and the business factors which led to the unit being permanently incorporated into the copper circuit.INTRODUCTION Clarabelle Mill is located in Sudbury Ontario (approximately 350 km north of Toronto) on the southwest rim of the Sudbury basin a meteoric impact crater that is 62 km long and 30 km wide. The result of the meteoric impact was concentrated nickel (Ni), copper (Cu) and platinum group metal (PGM) ore bodies in the outer perimeter of the basin; described in more detail by Hanley (1957). Vale currently has seven operating mines in the Sudbury basin, from which nine distinct ore types are mined. Ores are also received from two QuadraFNX mines. Clarabelle Mill processes all of these ores for the Ontario Operations of Vale. The mill, commissioned in 1971, was originally built as one of four mills operated by then Inco Limited. Between the late 70’s and the early 90’s process changes were made to consolidate the Sudbury Operations milling processes into a single operating mill, Clarabelle Mill. In 1990, the SAG mill was installed resulting in peak mill throughput of 11.9 million short tons per annum (Mstpa), with typical throughputs of ~10 Mstpa. Mill average feed grades were 1.4% Cu and 1.2% Ni. During the resources boom, plans were developed to increase the mill capacity at Clarabelle Mill in stages to a final capacity of 13.5 Mstpa. The project known as the Clarabelle Mill Expansion and Recovery Project (CMERP) included expansion and reconfiguration of the grinding and flotation circuits. The first stage was a planned increase in grinding capacity with the reallocation of existing mills, the existing flotation capacity would be required to treat higher throughput until the new flotation circuit was constructed."

This paper describes the execution and the results of a new method to seal off leaks in water retaining constructions. The new method, called BioSealing is based on activating the bacteries, present in soil and groundwater. The method was tested under field conditions in 2004 and applied at the HSL aqueduct of the 'Ringvaart Haarlemmermeer' in 2005.

The purpose of this effort was to investigate the feasibility of employing a piezoelectric transducer for seismic communications applications in mine environments. The transducer, a government furnished device incorporated a high Q, spring-mass resonator to load the air side of the piezoelectric crystal. The resonant frequency was seismic load dependent and fell in the range of 300 to 340 Hz. The effort included a mathematical analysis of the transducer, with corroborative laboratory tests, together with actual communications experiments performed first in an open-formation limestone quarry and finally in an operating iron mine. This work showed that the transducer could be coupled efficiently to hard, competent rock media with power conversion efficiencies of 70 to 80 percent (electrical to mechanical) in typical installations. In the iron mine, when radiating peak power was about 30 W (acoustical) in a gated pulse mode, signals were received at a distance of 760 ft through a massive rhyolite porphyry formation. This represents a 15% radiation efficiency with an input of 200 watts. Despite the high ambient noise level due to operating mine machinery, a signal-to-noise ratio of about 20 dB was achieved using a very narrow band filter to process the received signal, and a data rate of about two pulses/sec was demonstrated.
