Analysis and example applications have been performed to compare the accuracy and computing speed of alternating-direction explicit and implicit procedures (ADEP and ADIP) in numerical solution of reservoir fluid flow problems. ADIP yields significantly greater accuracy and requires about 60 per cent more computing time than ADEP, not 300 or 500 per cent more as reported elsewhere. l,2 INTRODUCTION Several recent papers 1-3 discuss an alternating-direction explicit difference approximation (ADEP) to the diffusion equation. Example applications of ADEP and ADIP4 were reported to support conclusions that ADEP is comparable in accuracy to ADIP and requires one-fifth to one-third the computing time of ADIP. Applications of ADEP in calculation of two-phase flow in reservoirs was also proposed. 3 This study was performed to compare further the relative merits of ADEP and ADIP in simulation of two-dimensional flow of one and two fluid phases in reservoirs. Since two-phase flow equations are often essentially elliptic rather than parabolic, the efficiency of ADEP in solving the elliptic equation was also examined.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and these data change as internal and external conditions evolve. Staffing turnover hinders experienced-based decisions especially with simple tools like spreadsheets. Lack of current information can contribute to decisions that result in significant deterioration in the quality of operation. Timely, unified information from sophisticated analyses presented to the broadest possible reach will improve operation. The major innovation is the addition of the web browser to the suite of software people will use with no training – the other two are spreadsheets and graphical presentations – and the consistent organization and transformation of the real time data to support broad access. This paper describes the data transformations and presentation methods necessary for a Web view, especially the special needs of real time data and analysis required for active operations decision-making. Many people inside and outside the complex, not just operators, need timely information that is abstracted, aggregated, organized and unified. Unification and aggregation of real time data presented via the Web opens a new paradigm for collaboration. The analysis tools are as important as the data. These rule-based tools add significantly to the operations database in the form of results stored for viewing with plant data. Mining and metallurgical plants already use many sophisticated analysis tools such as predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. These add real time events, similar to an alarm package, and unified production information to the operational database. Simple models are used on line to create key indices that provide a real time indication of performance. Key indices include metrics for losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency, and overall process equipment effectiveness. These additional data in the operations database are used for early fault detection, increased production, better quality, higher availability of equipment and faster detection of process bottlenecks. An important feature is the ability for people to create their own key indices and store the results for use by anyone in the plant historian, but accessible by a browser. The objective of ergonomics is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency with which human tasks are carried out. Furthermore, the objective is to improve desirable human values. This can be achieved by enhancing safety, reducing fatigue and stress, increasing comfort, increasing job satisfaction, having greater user acceptance and thereby improving the quality of life. Mechanization has influenced the prevalence of injury, mainly due to the application of human physical effort as the power source. With mechanization, the operator?s function is now essentially one of control rather than being an energy source, however, the risk of injury has not diminished. Mechanization in itself has introduced inefficiencies, health risks and physiological stress. The major objectives of ergonomics are discussed through examples of acceptable and less successful implementation of ergonomics within mechanized mining. The influence of the machine system on the human is addressed and practical solutions to improve and optimize the interaction of the human and the machine are outlined. Furthermore, practical examples of control and display integration, anthropometric and biomechanic influences on design, orientation, posture and stereotypes are used to accentuate the advantages of the application of sound ergonomics principles to the specialized area of mechanized mining.

Risk analysis is an important step in the design of rock slopes in open pit mining. Risk is defined as the product of the probability of slope failure and the consequences of the failure, and is generally evaluated in terms of safety and economic risk. Most of the risk analysis done at present is based on the use of limit equilibrium (LE) techniques in evaluating the probability of failure (POF) of the slopes. The approach typically makes use of full Monte Carlo simulations of the limit equilibrium models, with all uncertain variables randomly varied. The number of required simulations is generally over a thousand, at times as high as 20 000, in order to produce statistically valid results of the POF. Such an approach is clearly not practical when using numerical modelling programs dueto the high computational effort required. This paper explores the impact of using numerical modelling instead of the traditional LE techniques in evaluating the probability of slope failure. The difference in the overall assessed risk, in terms of economic impact, for the mining operation is then evaluated. With numerical models, approximate methods are used in the calculation of the probability of failure instead of full Monte Carlo simulations. This paper will use a method called the response surface methodology (RSM) for estimating the POF from numerical analyses. Simple slope models were used to verify the accuracy of the RSM method by comparing the results with those obtained from full Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that there is good agreement between the POF values computed using full Monte Carlo simulation and those obtained using the RSM method. Finally, the use of numerical modelling in the assessment of risk is shown to bring a significant difference in the result compared with that from LE methods. One of the reasons for the difference is that LE models tend to underestimate the failure volumes and hence the consequences of slope failure.

The selection of the optimum process route for a new project has traditionally consisted of investigating existing options and ranking them in terms of cost, technical risk and environmental acceptability. With the current focus on sustainable development other factors now need to be considered. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the process options can be used to extend the assessment in terms of their potential for earning renewable energy credits and in judging their ability to achieve greenhouse gas emission reductions. A rigorous life cycle assessment is demanding in terms of setting the baseline for comparisons and evaluating the elements that make up the emission profiles of the process options. However, a simplified LCA can provide a useful tool for comparing different process options. This approach can be combined with traditional assessment criteria to rank the options available to the project. GRD Minproc has been intimately involved in executing LCA calculations for different municipal waste treatment options. This paper applies a similar LCA methodology to investigate the greenhouse gas implications for different options for copper processing. The process options considered are:concentrator û sale of concentrate to smelter, concentrator û on-site mini smelter, and concentrator û leach SX/EW. The paper then goes on to consider the operating cost implications that could arise with the introduction of carbon taxes or carbon credits and how these might impact on the future choice of flowsheet.

Compósitos magneto-elétricos (ME) combinam fases magnetostrictivas e piezoelétricas e podem ser utilizados na geração de energia a partir de vibrações e campos magnéticos presentes no ambiente, sendo também aplicáveis em sensores de campo magnético e em redes de sensores sem fio. Neste trabalho, um compósito ME foi processado pelo método cerâmico com 15 vol% CoFe2O4 (ferrita de cobalto) como fase magnetostrictiva e 85 vol% BaTiO3 como fase piezoelétrica. É mostrada a relação entre os parâmetros de processamento/sinterização e a microestrutura do compósito ME, com três tipos diferentes de arranjo das fases: particulado (obtido por dois diferentes métodos) e em camadas. Foram compactadas pastilhas dos compósitos para sinterização nas temperaturas de 1.200ºC, 1.300ºC e 1.400ºC por 4h, sendo que ocorreu a fusão da pastilha sinterizada a 1.400ºC. As amostras sinterizadas foram observadas em microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV), onde foram analisadas as características de porosidade, tamanho de grão e a distribuição das fases na microestrutura. Foram realizadas também análises cristalográficas por difração de raios-X (DRX), de espectroscopia RAMAN e de espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (EDS). Foram relacionados os parâmetros de processamento utilizados com os resultados obtidos.

Due to limited available level ground, Nkomati Nickel Mine cut a weathered rock slope at the base of a mountain spur in order to create a platform for construction of the primary crusher plant and run-of-mine stockpiles. As space is limited around the mining area, ore processing at Nkomati is based on a high reliability of flow of material through the crusher plant, with minimal usage of other and larger designed stockpiles. Evidently, any crusher plant shutdown will render the mine as a whole unproductive and put excessive strain on the medium- to long-term large ore stockpiles, the deposition rates for which are restricted by founding material consolidation requirements. At the onset of the 2012 rainy season, movement was identified on the slope monitoring system and cracks developed on the slope. After a minor failure on the crusher slope an assessment of the slope stability was conducted and a slope management plan recommended, which included deployment of real-time monitoring. An evaluation of the conditions leading to instability was conducted and the likely causes for the failure identified. A full evaluation of the slope monitoring, rainfall, and mining conditions was undertaken and movement triggers were determined. This paper describes the events leading to the development of the failure and the evaluation of the monitoring data to determine a management plan for the failure that allowed for minimal shutdowns of the primary crusher.

COBALT is a silvery gray metal which closely resembles nickel in appearance and properties although it is somewhat harder and more brittle. It is rather widely disseminated and is estimated to make up about 0.001 percent of the earth's crust as compared to 0.020 percent for nickel. Cobalt, one of the four ferromagnetic elements, is used for many magnetic applications. It is oxidation resistant, a property which when coupled with its moderately high melting point of 1,495° C., makes it useful in high-temperature applications. Although cobalt had been used by man as a coloring agent for glass and other ceramic products for 4,000 years, it was not isolated as a metal until 1742 and not established as an element until some 40 years later. Early in the 20th century, cobalt began to be used in alloys, and soon these applications displaced ceramics as the major consumer of cobalt. The use of cobalt in alloys gave considerable stimulus to production, and the world output of cobalt increased rapidly, rising from 400 tons in 1920 to 1,400 tons in 1930 and 5,500 tons in 1940. With the advent of the jet plane in the mid 1940's and the consequent increased need for cobalt-bearing high-temperature alloys, cobalt production again increased, reaching 7,900 tons in 1950. The increased demand for cobalt during the Korean war coupled with a large demand for stockpiling caused world production to more than double within the next 10 years, reaching a peak of 17,300 tons in 1959.

"This paper reports on an investigation into gas and dust concentrations in Ruttan Mine's exhaust air. The values obtained indicate that there is excellent potential to recirculate approximately 25% of the hot exhaust air into the intake air to reduce winter heating costs. Contaminant concentrations vary significantly during the course of the working shift and decrease in the mine exhaust system as the air returns to surface. A proposed on-line control system is outlined which would permit recirculation to be implemented with a pay-back period of less than two years. IntroductionIncreased energy costs and depressed mineral prices have resulted in mines, which use winter ventilation air heating, reviewing their systems to try to reduce costs. Heating costs can be significant, for example, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan spends an average of $580,000 per mine per year and Ruttan mine spends approximately $IM per year on propane for its direct-fired heating system.Several method s of reducing heating costs have been considered and the following have potential application.Heat Exchange Between Exhaust andIntakeThis is usually accomplished by run-round glycol systems. The system is limited by ice formation on the coils in wet exhaust air and by the low exhaust air temperature, usually l0ºC. It also requires close proximity of the intake and exhaust airways to ma~e the cost of the connecting pipeline and pump systems economic . A feasibility study by Inco's Thompson operation reported that a proposed system of this type had a 19-year payback period and was, therefore, uneconomic. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan is currently investigating plastic heat exchangers for a trial system because of corrosion on metal exchangers. It has the advantage of a 17°C exhaust temperature and relatively dry exhaust air.Waste Heat ReclamationThe waste heat from compressors and hoists can be used for heating in some mines. The feasibility of such a system depends on the individual layout and the proximity of the heat source to the inlet airway. Other mines have considered using the exhaust air in greenhouses to provide a cash crop."

Industrial engineering departments perform staff duties and are most effective when sincerely supported by management. In accordance with the needs and desires of the mining companies involved, various industrial engineering functions have been adopted widely at western metal mines during the period 1950-60. Newly organized departments usually conduct method and equipment studies, work-measurement programs, and establish and maintain production standards. Supervisor-training programs and courses are effective in showing the relationship between supervisory responsibility and the purpose for which industrial engineering is practiced. Industrial engineering staffs of western metal mines are composed predominantly of personnel from within the companies. Experienced industrial engineers, not necessarily experienced in mining, frequently are hired by a company to help establish the department. Management consultants frequently are called upon to advise management and instruct department personnel in industrial engineering practices. Some departments have developed satisfactory industrial engineering programs without benefit of formal industrial engineering training or advice.

Globally, it is anticipated that the mineral sands industry will enter a period of short supply. Demand for both titanium dioxide and zircon is forecast to continue increasing, with new projects needed to come on-stream to fill the supply gap. Victoria is well placed under this scenario as a source due to the high quality of its mineral assemblage, its excellent resource grade and the globally significant size of its mineral sands resources.Australia’s mineral sands rich Murray Basin remains under-developed, especially at its extensive Victorian margins. Development to date has not progressed adequately for the reasons of technology difficulty, history of competition with other jurisdictions and the absence of a platform that requires development as a consideration for security of tenure. Victoria’s mineral sands potential is not just about the Murray Basin, in addition, there have been discoveries in the Gippsland Basin and prospective sites in the Gippsland Basin remain under-explored. Key problems included the lack of available ground for potential developers and the intellectual property of solutions to technological problems associated with the fine grained mineral deposits belonging to a previous developer (with patents now expired).As such, the timing is right to re-visit the potential of the Murray Basin as a site for long-term development with high returns based on current and predicted prices.In order to understand why Victoria’s earth resources in general, and mineral sands in particular, remain under-explored and undeveloped, the Department of Primary Industries initiated an internal review of its role in encouraging and supporting investment in the earth resources sector.As a result, the Victorian Government has committed to taking action to encourage effective ground turnover and acknowledges that a new focus on engagement with industry is needed to bring new investment to the State. The revision of the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990 provides an opportunity for the government to better align its legislative processes with industry project lifecycles and facilitate access to valuable resources that currently remain undeveloped.Victoria has a track record in assisting projects reach development stage. Iluka currently has two operations in the State in addition to its mineral separation plant that is capable of processing HMC from its South Australian operations. Iluka is expected to ramp up its Murray Basin Stage 2 operations with the WRP mine scheduled to come on line in early 2012. Meanwhile, Astron is actively seeking partners for its Donald Mineral Sands project. The project is becoming increasingly attractive given the recent price hike in zircon; Astron has access to an estimated five to 6 Mt of zircon in its Donald WIM 250 deposit.Given its substantial and valuable mineral sands endowments, the State of Victoria should sensibly be the centre of future investment in project development. However, as previously mentioned this is currently not the case. The Government is therefore committed to implementing new measures that protect security of tenure but ensure that genuine companies can access endowments where they have a clear intent to work those resources.

Bulk sampling programs are typically applied in coarse gold mineralised systems to verify resource/reserve grades. In recent years, there have been controversies surrounding some results of underground bulk sampling exercises compared to the predictions using diamond drill data. Just how realistic is it to predict 100 t lots from drilling that was designed to model blocks of several thousand tonnes? This study looks at the variation of relatively small units within larger planned mining units and compares some of the geostatistical techniques which purport to provide tools for such studies. Relative difficulty of application, computer timings and summaries of results will be used to illustrate the likely variation in bulk sampling units as opposed to mining units and large-scale planning units. A case study based on publicly available data from a gold project in North America is presented. A simplistic and unconditional geostatistical simulation model demonstrated that up to 50 per cent of a relatively high-grade mining block could show as uneconomic low-grade subblocks. A subsequent study will consider a similar demonstration using uniform conditioning. Erroneous impressions of early sampling results can lead to unsupported prejudgements of the final results. Bulk sampling programs require detailed planning based on ore characteristics, where protocols must fit the mineralisation type. Any program requires definition of aims and data quality objectives across grade, geological, geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters.CITATION:Clark, I and Dominy, S C, 2017. Education and training research is a major component of the Bureau of Mines human factors research program. The goal of human factors research is to enhance human performance for the purpose of improving both safety and the profitability of the minerals industries. This is achieved through the design of mining equipment, work tasks, management procedures, and development of human resources. This proceedings volume presents several new developments that are helping to improve the quality and efficiency of health, safety, and occupational skills training in the mining community. Several papers address the issue of how to teach and assess miner abilities to deal with underground mine emergencies. Other papers examine practical procedures for defining and cost justifying the integration of structured training and other performance improvement strategies to enhance the proficiency of the work system.

Compliance with Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) exposure regulation is currently performed using timeweighted average (TWA) sampling on underground mine workers. These samples are collected in the span of an entire shift and the resulting concentrations are compared to a legislated exposure limit. While this is very useful to determine the exposure level of an individual to DPM, it fails to clearly identify causes of exposure and highlight opportunities that could help reduce the exposure of workers in the course of the work shift. Real-time DPM monitoring measures the worker?s exposure as a function of time and helps identify circumstances where corrective actions can be taken or design changes can be made by the individual or the employer to reduce the overall exposure of the worker and peers. This work focused on obtaining DPM concentrations using a real-time polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) monitor. The aim was to demonstrate that this instrument, while not a direct DPM analyzer, was able to provide a concentration profile that could easily be linearly correlated to standard TWA elemental carbon measurements. In addition, several instances of improvements that could be implemented to reduce the exposure of underground employees were demonstrated.

Annually, the United States uses more than 4 billion tons of new mineral materials, or about 40,000 pounds per person-about half being mineral fuels and the other half being metals and nonmetallics. Stable and economic domestic mining, mineral, metal, and mineral reclamation industries are essential to the economy. The value of United States energy and processed materials of mineral origin exceeds $200 billion annually. Although a number of minerals are imported, especially some designated as "strategic and critical," most U.S. mineral supplies are derived from the domestic mines and processing facilities that you will be seeing, reading about, and visiting as you use this visitor guide. We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is intended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation's romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

That electricity is an important and valuable agent, the limit of whose capacity for utilisation is as yet unknown, is a truism; although enormous advances have been made, the possible developments are yet greater. Mining, along with other industries, shares already to a large extent in the practical utilisation of this agent. Electrical engineers have been employed for several years past in developing and applying electricity to all classes of machinery, and for every purpose where power is required and in no instance, that the writer is aware of, has its use been curtailed in favour of any other agency now known, while extensions are continually made. The first modern electric motor was shown at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873, and it was used to work a pump through a mile length of cable but it was not before 1878, that an electric motor was put into daily commercial use by Messrs. Chretian and Felix to work a beet sugar hoist. This early plant effected a saving of 40 % as compared with hand work.In 1879, the first Electric Railway was constructed for the Berlin Exhibition, and in the same year, Mr. T. A. Edison was running an experimental line at Menlo Park. The first electric line opened for the public, was constructed by Siemens and Halske, in 1881, at Lichtenfelde, and was 11 miles in length.

The published liquidus data on the Pb-PbS system have been correlated on the basis of one-coefficient Margules equations. Thermodynamic properties of the components of this system have been obtained, and it has also been found that the calculated miscibility gap of this system exists over a very narrow range of temperature (1041 to 1058°C).

The Bureau of Mines study indicates that land utilized by the mining industry for mineral extraction and processing from 1930 through 1980 amounted to 5.7 million acres, or 0.25 percent of the land mass in the United States. Land reclaimed by the industry during the same period was 2.7 million acres, or 47 percent of the land utilized. Land use by the mining industry includes surface land used for excavation or mining, for waste from underground mining, and for wastes from milling or processing operations. Data on land use for disposal of overburden waste from surface coal mines and on areas affected by subsidence associated with underground mining are included for the period 1930-71 only. The 10 leading States in total land used for mining over the 51-year period were, in decreasing order, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, West Virginia, Florida, Indiana, California, Alabama, and Missouri. Seven mineral commodities accounting for 92 percent of land use are, in decreasing order, bituminous coal, sand and gravel, stone, phosphate rock, clay, copper, and iron ore, all predominately surface mined. Bituminous coal production was responsible for nearly half of the total area utilized. Reclamation of mined lands and waste disposal sites over the reporting period was largely on lands utilized in mining bituminous coal; 75 percent of the land used for bituminous coal production was reclaimed.

Mr. Tamaro introduced his paper which concerned the construction of foundations for the buildings and related infrastructure of the World Financial Center on a reclaimed shoreline site at the Southern tip of Manhattan Island. This large project presented difficult design and construction problems, both geotechnical and structural. All structures were supported by foundations carried to rock. Two of the buildings were supported by conventional pier (pad) foundations constructed within diaphragm wall cofferdams. The remaining structures were supported by either piles to rock or caisson (large diameter) piles with socket depths drilled through the rock of up to 7.6 metres. Underground services, railway and proposed road tunnels all affected the installation of foundations. The proposed road tunnels for the new six lane 'Westway' would involve an excavation 12 metres deep adjacent to and under three buildings. This problem was solved by an agreement that tower windloads would be taken by the tower foundations and not distributed through the basement walls. This was achieved by a system of battered caissons founded on the rock and arranged so that adjacent caissons were founded in different rock masses. Diaphragm walls were restrained using tie backs. Ground testing indicated an exposure to D.C. stray current corrosion of all underground construction. As a result all of the foundations were isolated from the ground by non-conductive materials. In the case of piles and caissons the reinforcing for the caisson was fully protected by concrete and all outside steel used for the installation of piling was considered sacrificial and not used in the computation of long term load carrying capacity.
