Fluidized bed roasting of copper concentrates from Mt. Morgan, Mt. Lyell, Mt. Isa, and Peko was performed in a 3 ft 6 in diameter, slurry fed, pilot plant roaster operated under autogenous conditions to produce calcines with desirable leaching properties. A 12 in. diameter, externally heated roaster, provided with a dry feed system, was also used.An account is given of important factors which influence roaster behaviour and performance, and the effects of operating variables on calcine composition and leaching properties are described. Due to copper ferrite formation, a maximum of approximately 50 per cent of the copper in the calcines may be in the form of CuO before the copper leach efficiency falls significantly below lOO' per cent. Recovery of gold by cyanidation of leach residues was consistently high and independent of roasting conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn traditional practice copper is produced by pyrometallurgical techniques when the ,copper minerals in the ore or concentrate are predominantly sulphides, and by hydrometallurgy when the minerals are oxidized. Copper smelting is most suited to large scale operations, and for many years small to medium size mines with sulphide orebodies have been interested ill; alternative processes.Since hydrometallurgical plants (ie. leaching and electrowinning plants) are essentially unitized, they may be scaled down in output without much loss in efficiency or increase in processing cost, and many proposals have been made for the application of this type of process following roasting of the sulphides to render the copper soluble. However, until the advent of fluidized roasting, it was not possible to control the roasting operations sufficiently precisely to produce calcines consistently of the required leaching characteristics.

The mining industry in Colorado faces the same problems the industry faces throughout the United States and the world — record low commodity prices and increasing regulatory and environmental restrictions that seemed designed to curtail mining activities. Despite those obstacles, the mining industry in Colorado still contributes about $8 billion annually to the state’s economy in the form of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and associated service businesses and jobs. So the 300 attendees at the102nd National Western Mining Conference felt reason-ably positive about the industry in their state. The meeting is the Colorado Mining Association’s annual conference and was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in November. The theme was “Mining in the New Millennium — Achievement + Innovation = Survival.” Experts from Colorado’s mining industry and abroad discussed the challenges faced by the mining industry as it enters the new millennium. They offered insights into how the industry will operate during the early years of the 21st century and how it will survive low prices and increased regulatory restrictions.

"Geostatistical conditional simulations are becoming increasingly popular as tools that provide models of uncertainty at different stages of a mining project. They have been used as grade control tools in daily operations to assess the uncertainty of mineable reserves at the project’s feasibility stage, and to assess mineralization potential in certain settings. Other applications include assessment of recoverable reserves, resource and reserve classification, and drill hole spacing optimization studies. All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the correct (or accurate) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its effect on the final objective.The objective of this paper is to compare the ad-hoc uncertainty model provided by a traditional classification scheme with the probability intervals resulting from a conditional simulation model. It is argued that the uncertainty model derived from the use of classification schemes is of little practical use to the mining company or operation. The paper emphasizes differences in uncertainty based on the size of the mining unit considered, the extraction method, and local geological differences. Most importantly, it discusses confidence intervals for these mining units, as compared to the relative precision envisioned by a typical classification scheme.The application described in this paper is taken from a medium-sized Cu open pit and underground mine in northern Chile, and demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting conditional simulation models. It also compares a more traditional resource classification scheme applied, and the wide difference in local confidence intervals for each mining unit."

The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2 Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological models even further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip. Experiments were carried out using the cyclone to treat coal in the size range -2.0+0 mm. The diameters of the cyclone outlets (vortex finder and spigot) were varied to study their effects on cyclone performance. The cyclone products were deslimed over a screen with an aperture of 0.075 mm. The performance of the separator was studied for washing coarse coal (-2.0+0.075 mm) and fines (-0.075 mm). Performance curves were plotted for the separation of -2.0+0.075 mm coal. The concept of a generalised distribution curve was adopted to predict cyclone performance. A mathematical representation was derived from the generalised distribution curve. The specific gravity of separation for individual size fractions showed a decreasing trend with decreasing particle size down to 0.85 mm, beyond which a reverse trend was noted. It was also found that the fine size fraction (-0.075 mm) does not separate on the basis of size or specific gravity but follows the water distribution

Various styles of gold mineralisation pose problems during sampling because of their complex gold grade distribution and presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation forms the basis of resource estimates. The design of a sampling and assaying protocol must be based on a thorough understanding of the mineralisation in question, which should include consideration of gold particle size and mass distribution. The proportion of coarse gold within samples has a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assaying. Choice of preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if sampling errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, often understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and LeachWELL. Proper application of the Theory of Sampling reduces errors during collection, preparation and assaying. A quality control/quality assurance program must be implemented and critically assessed. A case study from the Ballarat mine is presented, which is characterised by substantial quantities of coarse-gold hosted in quartz veins. Diamond core drilling is the key input into resource delineation. A number of different sampling and assay options have been trialled over the recent project history. The Wharf Resources mine, located in the Bald Mountain Mining District approximately 6.4 km (4miles) west of Lead, South Dakota, has operated a surface gold and silver mine and heap leaching processing facility since 1983. Wharf Resources intends to mine and process gold and silver ore from the Wharf Expansion area which is located on the eastern flank of the currently permitted Foley Ridge Mine. The Trojan Pit for the Wharf Expansion area was initially designed with an overall highwall slope angle of 45o. During mine permit presubmission meetings with personnel from the SD Department of Environment and Natural Resources (SD DENR), the question arose as to whether a detailed slope stability analysis of the proposed Trojan Pit highwalls was completed to justify the 45o slope. Wharf’s response was that the highwall design was based, in part, upon studies completed in1987 on the Annie Creek and Foley Ridge Mines; and, in part, upon subsequent slope stability analyses conducted by Wharf mine personnel through 1996. It was suggested by the SD DENR that the stability study be updated to reflect structural geological conditions in the Wharf Expansion area.

"The planning and construction of prime coking coal beneficiation plants in the nationalized mines in India are reviewed. Flow schemes, construction practice, materials consumption, and costs are detailed.Medium-capacity beneficiation plants with multiple loops are recommended under Indian conditions.IntroductionThe reserve of high-grade and easily washed metallurgical coal in India are quite limited. Prime coking coal constitutes approximately 22% of the total resources and occurs exclusively in the Jharia coalfield in the state of Bihar. Bharat Coking Coal Limited (a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) the nationalized mining sector of India) owns 80% of the Jharia collieries. The development of Jharia coalfield in the pre-nationalized period before 1971 has been characterized by a large number of small mines with primitive mining methods and low productivity. The production of prime coking coal to meet the demand of the steel industry in India has to increase from the existing level of 11.1 million tonnes to 43.4 million tonnes per annum by 2000 AD, thereby producing 5.61 million tonnes and 22.7 million tonnes of clean coal respectively. An ambitious program has been undertaken for development of bigger mines with an average production of 1 to 3 million tonnes per annum. With the fast dwindling reserves of good quality coking coal, more inferior grade coal seams, having difficult washing characteristics, are now being mined. All the coal from the future mines will have to be beneficiated to make it suitable for consumption of steel plants; the following washeries are being planned for construction by 2000 AD:"

The platinum mining industry has experienced a significant increase in fatal accidents. Mine accidents are in principle preventable, and there is enormous pressure on employers to reverse this trend. This paper reviews safety management systems (SMS) as well as behaviour-based safety (BBS). Based on the review, SWOT analyses are performed on the SMS and BBS processes and a model of an integrated safety management system (ISMS) is introduced. A number of fatal accidents is analysed to identify factors that contributed to accidents in the mining industry. Thereafter the potential weaknesses of an SMS of a platinum mine are exposed and the potential benefits of implementing the ISMS for this case study are demonstrated.

In a gravity separation device, particle shape, size and density all play a role. The combination of these determines where each individual particle reports to in the viscous fluid, where particle crowding (solids to water ratio) also plays a role. To understand the performance of gravity separation devices in the heavy mineral industry, these particle characteristics need to be measured. There are various challenges in analysing particle density and particle size simultaneously for the purpose of quantifying gravity separator performance, not to mention particle shape. These analytical challenges include the high cost of high-density sink-float fractionation, toxicity of high-density sink-float media, inability of sink-float media to fractionate at densities greater than 4.0 g/cm3, and the time-intensive nature of these fractionations. The use of the detailed particle-by-particle output from Qemscan® particle mineral analyses (PMA) as a fast and cost-effective alternative is evaluated. The size and density outputs from the Qemscan® were employed to characterize the performance of a heavy mineral spiral concentrator as an example. It is well accepted that the blast furnace will continue as the main route for iron-making for many more years. However, its limitations have motivated researchers to look for alternative routes, particularly, those where non-coking coal is used for liquid iron production. Smelting reduction (SR), where coal and oxygen are used to produce liquid iron and power is now receiving serious attention. Several smelting reduction reactors are now operating in pilot plant scale and one or two have reached commercial status.

Mining education has received almost continuous discussion since its inception and most people engaged in the mining industry and in mining education feel at some time the urge and necessity to express their views. This paper is not a comprehensive survey of past and present practices and accepted principles, but a personal opinion of the form mining education should take at university level. It is expressed because of a dissatisfaction with the existing courses offered to students. It is hoped to provoke discussionand bring forth guidance to those engaged in mining education. After all, students spend four or five years at a university and it is desirable that the graduate should be something more than just those many years older at the end of his course.POST GRADUATE EMPLOYMENTThe first problem confronting the university should, be to discover what the mining industry wants and expects or graduates. This must influence the university course and yet universities have done little to seek this information, and if suggestions have been offered by industry; universities appear to have made little use of them. University mining curricula are basically what they were 50, 100 and even 200 years ago. (See Appendix.) Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

"The experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of various process parameters in rotary degassing of aluminum alloy AS5U3G. Degassing was carried out by use of argon inert gas. The flow rate of the gas was investigated in the range of 12 to 21 L/min., 350 to 500 rpm rotor speed, 6 to 12 minutes degassing time, and 755°C to 780°C melt temperature. Degassing efficiency was evaluated through measuring the density of RPT samples. By optimizing the process parameters, RPT sample density was increased up to 2.73 g/cm3, which guaranties the production of high-quality aluminum castings. Tensile strength and elongation were increased considerably by degassing process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows small size and well-distributed microporosity. IntroductionOne of the major problems associated with the casting of aluminum alloys is the formation of gas porosity. Aluminum and its alloys are very susceptible to hydrogen absorption. Because solubility is much lower in solid state than liquid state, hydrogen atoms leave their position during solidification and combine together to form hydrogen molecules. These micrometer- scale cavities, called microporosity, cause the reduction of mechanical properties, particularly strength, ductility, fracture toughness, fatigue resistance, pressure tightness, and corrosion resistance (Laslaz, 1991; Jorstad and Rasmussen, 1993; Sigworth and Wang, 1994; Korasani, 1996; Anson and Gruzleski, 1999; Zhang et al., 2000). To avoid these problems and produce good quality castings, it is necessary to remove hydrogen from the melt. Several methods are available for degassing aluminum melt. One of them is a rotary degassing system using inert gas, e.g. Ar or N2. Various thermodynamic and kinetic factors govern the removal of hydrogen from molten aluminum (Anderson, 1987; Sigworth, 1987; Pignault, 1993; King and Reynolds, 1995). These are some parameters that affect degassing efficiency. Some of them are discussed here and some are examined in this project."

Abstract The design of deep excavation pits in rock mass is dependent as well on the mechanical properties of the rock mass as for example the orientation and the type of discontinuities like bedding planes, joints and fissures, the length of the discontinuities (persistence), the grade of weathering, the strength of rock mass, and the shear strength in the discontinuities, etc., and also on the respective boundary conditions specific for the project, and here especially the geometrical boundary conditions. The basic mutual influences and interactions between these boundary conditions are explained and exemplary presented at an excavation pit with a depth of 18,5 m, situated at a slope with a surface near groundwater table. Résumé La planification des excavations profondes dépend aussi bien de la qualité mécanique du roc, par exemple la location de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance, le degré de rupture, le degré de décomposition, la dureté du roc et la résistance limitée au cisaillement de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance que des conditions limitées spécifiques pour le projet, ici en particulier des conditions limitées géométriques. Les influences et interactions essentielles et mutuelles entre les conditions limitées isolées seront expliquées et présentées à l’aide d’une excavation 18,5 m de profondeur, située sur une pente où le niveau des eaux souterraines est près de la surface. Kurzfassung Die Planung tiefer Baugruben im Fels hängt sowohl von den mechanischen Eigenschaften des Fels wie z.B. der räumlichen Lage des Trennflächengefüges, dem Durchtrennungsgrad, dem Verwitterungsgrad, der Gesteinsfestigkeit sowie der Scherfestigkeit des Trennflächengefüges als auch von den projektspezifischen Randbedingungen hier insbesondere von den geometrischen Randbedingungen ab. Die wesentlichen gegenseitigen Einflüsse und Interaktionen zwischen den einzelnen Randbedingungen werden aufgezeigt und an einer 18,5 m tiefen Baugrube in Hanglage mit oberflächennahem Grundwasser vorgestellt.

The Misima open pit gold mine is a 20Mt per annum operation. Blasthole drilling is used to sample all material at a uniform 5m square pattern, and representative sub- sampling of the blast holes enables assay samples to be collected over the full 10m bench height. Samples are assayed for gold, silver and copper at the Company's laboratory at the mine site and the assays are provided to geologists as a written assay report and on floppy disc. Surveyed blasthole locations and assay results are transferred via personal computers (PCs) to a SUN mini-computer where results are stored by bench, blasthole assays are kriged, and plot files are created. A geologist selects grade boundaries from the kriged data, adjusting the boundaries towards the raw blasthole data where hard boundaries are recognised. Surveyors peg the resultant boundaries in the pit using a system of colour-coded pegs to display the different material types. A daily plan also shows boundaries and face positions.

Several empirical equations to estimate coal pillar strength have been presented in academic studies. The development processes of these equations are similar and are usually obtained by fitting the mathematical function (curve) to field data. One of the best criteria to evaluate the quality of fitting for such equations is the correlation coefficient R2, which has limited applicability. It is necessary to calculate the correlation coefficient access to the initial data for which the equation is presented; this is impossible for many coal pillar strength formulas. This paper presents a new approach based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude to compare the coal pillar strength. This approach utilizes a combination of parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), function type and degrees of freedom. The confidence level of constants is subsequently formed and the correlation coefficient becomes more comprehensive. Therefore, for an effective comparison, the efficiency and accuracy of coal pillar strength formula can be used. Over the past several decades, the use of cement-based grouts using ultra fine cement as a replacement for portland cement has begun to gain acceptance as an alternative to chemical solution grouts used in permeation grouting. The amount of information currently available on grouts made with ultrafine cement is limited. The authors used a previously developed field testing program to perform additional tests to evaluate the permeation performance of portland and ultrafine cement-based grouts. For the first time, the 2003 testing program included an attempt to determine the 28 day compressive strength of the sand permeated by the grout.

"SynopsisThe purpose of this paper is to introduce an innovative approach to risk management in surface mining operations, namely, positive risk. Traditionally, risk management focused on mitigating losses (negative). Positive risk, on the contrary, reverses the approach and focuses on exploiting a project’s inherent benefits (positive).The inability to accurately determine project objectives during the project planning phase and the failure to achieve those objectives during the execution phase is a major problem for any project management in the mining environment.The advance of computer aided design models for mine planning enables mining engineers to examine various options within a very short time. Employing positive risk management combined with drivers-based risk management when evaluating these options provides an ideal opportunity to investigate areas for improving the mining project’s profits. Furthermore, harnessing positive risk returns during the planning phase contributes immensely to the successful achievement of project objectives.Mining has inherent business risks, which can appear overwhelming when considering the risks associated with a mining project schedule, cost, and safety or resources, etc. The question is – how to manage risks in a surface mining environment, and what process methodologies, work methods, processes, and standards should be used when considering the surface mining risks. Applying the principles of positive risk management to manage surface mining risks is not only relevant, but definitely beneficial to mining projects and to the mining industry as a whole.It would be beneficial for risk managers and risk professionals to understand the roles of positive risk ‘drivers’, also known as ‘propitious attractors’. Identifying, analysing, estimating, and understanding the propitious attractors, their behaviour and their influence on project risk events helps considerably during the planning and execution phases. The theoretical and practical knowledge of both sides of the risk – the downside risk (negative risk) and upside risk (positive risk) – can add substantial value to any organization when downside risk is adequately mitigated and upside risk is beneficially exploited."
