This paper provides a brief overview of the history of the Chaffers Dewatering Project which was successfully commissioned in August 1993. Until the end of 1992 the `Superpit' and the deep mines of the Golden Mile had all been dewatered by a staged pumping system from the 28 level in the Lake View Shaft, which was removed at that time when the Lake View Mine was absorbed into the Superpit. Feasibility analysis had indicated that adaptation of oil industry technology offered the greatest potential for a low cost solution to the problem of dewatering the open pit and deep mines. A KCGM engineer and one of the authors visited the Jackson oilfields to look at the deep well pumping technology in use there in early-1991. In the final analysis a new dewatering station was established in the 23 level crushing station of the Chaffers Shaft using conventional plunger pumps, but the rising main was screwed 178 mm OD (7 inch) casing the suspended from the surface to a depth of 686 metres, and was installed using oilfield personnel and methods. Only the second installation of its kind in Australia, the project achieved the dewatering objective at about half of the capital cost of the more conventional approach and at lower operating costs as well.

El presente trabajo está enfocado en recuperar los metales como plata y plomo de las escorias, mediante el proceso metalúrgico de lixiviación ácida/super ácida y flotación. Estas escorias son pasivos ambientales generados en los años 80’s, JS Consulting en el área de investigación metalúrgica desarrollo el proceso de lixiviación y flotación para lograr recuperar la Ag y Pb de las escorias y de esta manera darle valor en el mercado de dicho material que no tenía valor. Los resultados obtenidos fueron muy favorables, en la lixiviación de las escorias se logro separar hierro, silice, zinc, cobre de la plata y plomo, estos dos últimos elementos quedaron en el solido logrando una concentración comercialmente en el mercado.

The protection of natural resources is of essential importance in times of rapidly increasing populations and resulting shortage of agricultural land. Soil and groundwater resources play a central role for the production of food or feed of any kind. The intensive agricultural and environmentally friendly use of these resources must ensure sufficient income and sustainability of life for future generations. Mining projects often represent a particularly deep intervention into ecosystems due to their size as well as the most expensive treatment processes. Conventional mines comprising of shafts and developed mining fields require the stockpiling of waste rock and in particular to potash mining, the discharge of brines from raw salt processing. In contrast, mining operations based on the solution mining method can be operated without major environmental impacts and lower security risks. While the solution mining for the production of rock salt finds application since more than 500 years, exist a procedure to produce potash using solution mining only since the 1980's. For solution mining drill holes are used to exploit the potash, launched from the surface into the deposit. The exploitation of the raw material occurs by the dissolution of the potash injecting solvents and creating so-called brine caverns. Currently, a number of mining projects in Carnallite deposits by the solution mining method are in progress around the world. Often these projects are located in sensitive ecosystems. K-UTEC project and support actual a solution mining operation of a Carnallite deposit for a Chinese customer in South-East Asia. This work comprises a comprehensive geological and geomechanical modeling as well as stability analyses. Furthermore the cavern design and brine field layout as well as the planning of the brine processing and the plant design. The present paper introduces this project as a case study. The application of a special solution mining procedure and processing design ensures an emission-free mining operation (Zero Disposal Plant). The emission-free operation is achieved by utilizing the full extent of the caverns to dispose the liquid solutions from processing. The presentation of principal salt processing and technical equipment will be rounded by information about the geology of the deposit. Since the deposit includes a number of sensitive minerals, such as Tachyhydrite and Bischofite the presentation comprise a lot of interesting items with special view at the brine field operation. K-UTEC designed and delivered a special blanket measuring system and a well cement according the request of the customer. K-UTEC, a research and engineering company with more than 60 years of experience in the sector of potash and rock salt mining, developed the world's first solution mining operation for Carnallite in Germany more than 30 years ago. In recent times K-UTEC served in different solution mining projects worldwide, with special view at the environmental impact, as well as the optimal utilization of the deposits.

THE Board of Directors of the Institute has authorized the appointment of a committee to draw up rules of procedure under which awards can be made from time to time to petroleum engineers for outstanding contributions to the art of finding and producing oil and gas. These awards will 11e sponsored by the Petroleum Division and are the first recognition by any professional society of outstanding achievement in "oil mining." They will be in the form of either a gold medal, scholar- ship, or other suitable prize. The awards will be financed from the income of the Anthony F. Lucas Memorial Fund, which was started about fifteen years ago, shortly after' his death, by admirers of Captain Lucas.

MUCH information concerning pegmatites which was thought to be true a few years ago has been proved false, and what is now actually known about some pegmatites is not true of many others. The erratic and seemingly unpredictable structure and variable composition of this class of mineral deposits has been widely emphasized. Even parts of the same pegmatite body exhibit marked differences in texture, mineral composition, width, and attitude. Constructive geological thinking in respect to pegmatites now aims to establish general laws rather than to stress the confusing diversity of features having no special economic significance.

The Deserado Mine and transportation system is the fuel supply portion of the Bonanza Power Plant project. Deserado Mine con¬sists of an underground mine with a capacity of 1,224,700 tonnes (1,350,000 tons) of clean coal per year, a 649 tonne (715 tons) per hour closed water circuit jig type preparation plant, a 5.6-kilometer (3 ½ -mile) overland conveyor with covered slot storage, a unit train rail load-out and 59.5 kilometers (37 miles) of totally independ¬ent, captive electrified railroad. Planning and exploration started in March of 1978. Construction of all facilities was completed in April of 1984, approximately six years after initial planning was commenced. This paper will discuss exploration, environmental permitting, mine planning, engineering and construction of the Deserado Mine project.

"This paper demonstrates the selection of grinding circuit technology for a number of recent projects including discussion of the key drivers and the role of energy efficiency. Decreasing head grades combined with a strong and sustained increase in operating costs has forced miners to examine increased project size, increased equipment capacity and efficiency improvements in order to reduce their unit operating costs and improve overall project economics. Comminution energy consumption, safety and capital cost considerations play a critical role in the success of projects. This paper presents some key guidelines for a successful and cost effective comminution circuit design and includes a case study on three projects, outlining the issues and the drivers which led to the ultimate circuit selection and the critical role that energy efficiency played.INTRODUCTIONComminution circuits for minerals processing are selected based on their suitability and efficiency in reducing run-of-mine ore to the desired feed size for the downstream process. The input material (ore) properties and downstream process requirements are the key determinants and there are standard approaches for each circumstance.The minerals processing industry has been a fast adaptor of efficiency improvements based on increasing capacity of equipment (e.g. trucks, crushers, mills, pumps) but less successful in adapting radically new technologies that disrupt incumbent flowsheets or processes.The installed power of grinding mills has increased linearly over the past 25 years (Meka & Lane, 2010) and pumps and classification equipment have kept pace. The autogenous grinding (AG) and semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills displaced stage crushing as a dominant method of coarse rock breakage in many applications causing crusher manufactures to increase the capacity of cone crushers to meet the competitive demand.Examples of new comminution technology in the 20th and 21st centuries are the development and adoption of cyclone classification in the 1940s (Newtech, 2016), AG milling in the late 1950s, vertical grinding mills in the 1980s, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) also in the 1980s and ultrafine milling technology in the 1990s (Meka & Lane, 2010)."

The legacy of underground coal mining may be a land surface which, in parts, may be unstable in the long term. A case study analysis has been undertaken to explain some of the hazards and how the risk may be assessed and managed.The Ipswich Coal Measures were extensively mined with shallow underground workings, which now underlie a number of suburbs in the eastern side of the city of Ipswich in south eastern Queensland. The area was subject to underground mining from the 1840s to 1997. In general, the mines were small, family-owned operations that were restricted by complex geology, interactions with neighbouring operations and ownership of surface facilities. The oldest available mine plans date back to the late 1890s.The residents in these mining areas have a long history of unexpected mining subsidence events. A level of risk management for property owners has been implemented by the Ipswich City Council, which requires a mining subsidence risk assessment to be submitted as part of building applications for property development in the areas suspected of having mining subsidence risk. This discussion examines a series of generic subsidence events and how the risk may be assessed and managed and the hazard controlled.CITATION:Ham, B?W, 2014. Em um ensaio de impacto Charpy convencional, não é comum mensurar a energia consumida nas etapas de fratura, geralmente se obtém apenas a porção de fratura dúctil. Esse trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar a proporção do consumo de energia das diferentes etapas de fratura e relacionar com a área de superfície de fratura do corpo de prova. Ainda, desenvolve discussão dos fenômenos envolvidos, utilizando a teoria já conhecida. Para a obtenção dos dados foi realizado ensaio de Charpy instrumentado em 50 corpos de prova de 9 lotes diferentes. As amostras foram retiradas a 1/3 do raio da seção redonda de barras laminadas a quente temperadas e revenidas. As amostras foram preparadas conforme amostra do tipo A, definido na ASTM E23. O ensaio foi conduzido a -20°C, obedecendo a norma ASTM E2298. Os resultados mostraram que aproximadamente 80% da energia consumida na fratura é consumida na etapa de fratura dúctil, sendo que 88% dessa energia é consumida na região de início de fratura. Essa região, porém, não representa maior área na superfície de fratura, devido a diferença de trabalho para deformação nas etapas de nucleação de trinca e propagação instável de trinca.

The binary system lead-antimony has been the subject of comprehensive investigations in these laboratories by Dean1 and his associates. The effect of a third constituent on this system, particularly on the lead-rich alloys in which dispersion hardening was found, has a commercial value as well as an academic interest. This paper covers the effect of the addition of copper, bismuth and tin, all of which are likely to be found in commercial lead-antimony alloys, and is divided into three parts, as follows: I. The System Lead-A~ili~r~ony-Copper II. The System Lead-Antimony-Bismuth III. The Lead Corner of the System Lead-Antimony-Ti11 These three systerrls are of three different types, and hence may be considered as covering three general kinds of additions. Bismuth forms no compounds with either lead or antimony and forms solid solutions with both. Copper forms several compounds with antimony as well as solid solutions but with lead it forms a two liquid layer system and no appreciable solid solution. Tin is soluble in both lead and antimony in the solid state and also forms a compound with antimony. The effect of small amounts of bismuth on the lead-antimony alloys is small, having no appreciable effect on the solubility of antimony. The temperature of the solidus floor is lowered appreciably by the presence of bismuth, cutting down the range of heat treatment. Copper, on the other hand, due to compound formation, increases the apparent solubility of antimony. The excess antimony is tied up with the copper finally and so is not available for dispersion hardening. The solubility of sulfur in Si-Fe was determined by the metallographic examination of heat-treated and quenched samples. In the absence of manganese, the solubility in 3.1 pct Si-Fe was found to be about 0.010 pct at 1000o C, 0.015 pct at 11000C, and 0.020 pct at 1150°C, which is substatntially less than hitherto reported. Increasing the silicon content was found to decrease the solubility of sulfur, which is consistent with the increase in the activity coefficient of sulfur with increasing silicon content that has been reported for Fe-Si alloys. Manganese additions were studied in alloys containing 3.1 pct Si and between 0.013 and 0.015 pct S. At low manganese levels the solubility product of manganese sulfide was found to be lower than previously reported. THE solubility of sulfur in pure polycrystalline iron has been reported by Rosenquist and Dunicz1 and by Turkdogan et al.2 Samples were equilibrated in atmospheres containing different ratios of H2S/H2. Both groups of investigators found a solubility limit in y iron of 0.013 pct at 1000oC and 0.031 pct at 1200°C. In addition, Rosenquist and Dunicz1 found a solubility limit in a iron of 0.020 pct at 900°C. Ainslie, Hoffman, and seybolt3 found significantly higher sulfur contents in polycrystalline iron samples than in single-crystal samples after heating at 890°C in a sealed tube containing a mixture of powdered iron and FeS made with s35. Whereas the single crystals contained 0.013 and 0.016 pct S (± 0.005 pct), the polycrystalline samples contained between 0.016 and 0.026 pct S. Autoradiographs suggested that the excess sulfur in the polycrystalline samples was due to the segregation of sulfur in solution at grain boundaries. Ainslie and seybolt4 have reported on the solubility of sulfur in 3 pct Si-Fe. Their samples were sealed in capsules containing hydrogen and sufficient sulfur as cobalt sulfide to saturate the sample. After heat treating, the sulfur-rich phase on the surface was removed by abrading, and the sulfur content of the sample was taken as the equilibrium value for that temperature. Before the equilibrating heat treatment, the samples were heated to 1300°C to coarsen the grains. The resulting grain size, which was about 3/18 in. in diam, was considered sufficiently large to preclude a sensible increase in sulfur solubility due to grain boundary segregation. They reported the solubility to be 0.029 pct at 900oC, 0.063 pct at 1000oC, 0.076 pct at 1100°C, 0.122 pct at 1200°C, and 0.098 pct at 1300°C.

O licor de lixiviação do minério limonítico tem como foco a recuperação dos metais níquel e cobalto. No entanto, o minério apresenta em sua composição outros metais como o cobre. Este metal não é o foco do beneficiamento, porém tem valor comercial, o que faz com que a recuperação desse metal agrege valor ao tratamento do minério. A técnica de extração por solventes é uma técnica conhecida na hidrometalurgia para recuperação de metais. Para a recuperação de cobre alguns extratantes são conhecidos, como os do tipo hidroximas. Pertencente a essa classe, o extratante Acorga M5640 é usado na extração do cobre. Esse trabalho buscou avaliar o pH de extração do cobre a partir de uma solução sintética baseada no licor de lixiviação do minério limonítico. Foi levada em consideração a solução após o pré-tratamento de remoção do ferro. Além disso, foram avaliadas diferentes concentrações do extratante Acorga M5640 na fase orgânica a fim de avaliar a quantidade necessária para a extração total do cobre sem que houvesse coextração dos demais metais. Foi possível extrair 99% do cobre em solução usando Acorga M5640 na concentração de 5% em volume e pH de trabalho igual a 2..

Westwood Mine has experienced several episodes of increased seismic activity. While current geotechnical characterizations such as RMR, GSI, and Q' index can identify the general rock quality and zones at risk of convergence, they fail in identifying zones at risk of seismic activity. Previous research at Westwood Mine has shown a correlation between seismicity and areas with strong rheology contrasts. To characterize this contrast, 300 UCS tests were analyzed with their associated geochemical data, and statistical analysis and regression were performed using IOGAS software to establish a relationship between resistance and geochemistry. UCS-generated data with XRF results were transferred to Leapfrog Geo to create a block model of intact rock strength. This block model dataset was used to perform a competency contrast block model, and back-analysis of specific seismic sectors at Westwood Mine were conducted to validate the model. The purpose is to develop an established geomechanical tool capable in identifying areas with greater seismic risk associated to a change in the rock strength characteristics. By identifying those areas, mitigation measures can be implemented to minimize impact of seismicity on the operation.

REASONS FOR THIS CHAPTER Up to this point in the book the material presented has addressed the fundamental parameters associated with the evaluation of mining ventures and other investment alternatives. The procedures and techniques illustrated represent the basic approach to project evaluation, particularly when considering the normal engineering economic analysis of investment proposals. The evaluation procedure is complicated, however, when dealing specifically with mining-related investment proposals. These complicating factors are invariably directly related to the many special characteristics of the mining industry. Many of these special features such as tax policies, revenue and cost estimation, and ore reserves have been addressed in previous chapters. In addition to the many special features of mining which directly impact, in a quantitative manner, the various line items in the pro forma income statements of a cash flow analysis, other features of mining affect evaluation procedures in a more general manner. The main purpose of this chapter, then, is to provide an exposition of some of these more qualitative factors. We hope this will enable the reader to recognize these factors in mine evaluation practice and to make suitable adjustments in his or her analysis.

DURing the spring of 1910 1 visited a number of open-pit brown-coal mines and underground workings in the vicinity of Halle, Halberstadt, Leipsic, Cologne and Bonn. The notes which I took and the observations which I made at the time have been condensed and make up the principal part of this paper. Certain supplementary information has been taken from several sources which are given in the paper. The mining of brown coal is one of the important industries of Germany. The coal varies in color from dark brown to almost black and is soft like loam. Pieces of wood and strips of bark and even parts of tree trunks are frequently encountered in the excavation although the coal for the most part consists of a pulverulent, more or less matted mass of small particles of vegetal matter. It is a product between peat and lignitic coal. An analysis, taken from Coal Resources of the World shows the approximate composition of the material: Moisture, 53.73 per cent.; ash, 4.98; fixed carbon, 18.08; volatile carbon, 23.31 per cent. Thc principal characteristic is the amount of moisture. This seldom runs less than 48 per cent. The ash is usually low and ranges from 5 to 10 per cent. The sulphur content is usually less than 0.5 per cent. The heating effect of the fuel ranges from 2,000 to 2,500 calories. The commercial deposits are confined to the Tertiary period although

This report describes how longitudinal and bending stress waves in' percussive drill rods generate noise. It is shown that in practical drills the largest noise source is the bending waves, which are mainly generated because of imperfections in the piston, chuck, and drill rod alignment. Equations are presented which enable the noise spectra generated by the bending and longitudinal waves to be precisely predicted. Means for reducing the amplitude of the bending waves are discussed.

An actor-critic reinforcement learning approach is presented to improve the production of an industrial mining complex by defining shovel allocation and adapting the short-term plan given grade-control decisions. Blasthole data updates the simulated orebody models, which are input into a stochastic grade-control method based on a spatially constrained clustering approach that minimizes the profit-loss function. These aspects are embedded in a discrete-event simulator that defines the material flow from faces to processors. A case study at a copper mining complex shows the methods’ ability to adapt to new information, improving the quality of the material feed and increasing cash flow by 23% compared to a baseline case.

Economic and at the same time environmentally acceptable mining of small vertical ore bodies and veins to great depths has always been a challenge for miners. The Bauer cutter system, widely used in civil engineering, has been further developed for applications in exploration and mining, to a sustainable system for selective mining with a focus on small vertical ore bodies and veins, as well as residual ore in open pit operations. Current situation of conventional mining of small ore bodies and vertical veins Small ore bodies and vertical or near-vertical ore veins often pose a challenge to the mining industry. The relatively small size of the ore deposit over great depths or lengths, with only limited exposure to the surface makes economical mining difficult. Open pit mining of such ore bodies must either be terminated early because of the high stripping ratio and the enormous environmental impact or is unprofitable from the very beginning. The required massive stripping of waste rock leads to high material hauling times and costs, intensive roadway and bench construction and maintenance, possible safety hazards due to heavy vehicle movement, pit wall stability risks, intensive surface water management and massive waste dump requirements. In addition, it can be assumed that increasingly extensive rehabilitation measures will be required in the future after mine closure. Particularly in vertically oriented magmatic and hydrothermal deposits the technical, economic and environmental limits for further pushbacks, to extend the open pit depth, can lead to an early end of mine life even if a significant quantity of residual ore is left behind. Going underground is only a viable option in a limited number of mines with very high ore values and volumes. The high development cost of an underground mine, as well as the higher underground mining costs, often prevent further mining to greater depths.

As the demand for electric power grows and generation facilities are constructed in more remote areas, the industry faces an increasing number of foundation construction challenges. The importance of quality geotechnical information prior to construction is accentuated by the linear nature of the projects and the potential for drastic changes from one end to the other, but is often difficult or unfeasible to obtain. Alignments are crossing remote, rugged and/or environmentally protected terrain, and completing a comprehensive geotechnical program is made challenging from an access or economic standpoint, or both. In these situations, the industry needs a flexible foundation alternative. This paper will present micropiles as that alternative and demonstrate how the implementation of micropile foundations mitigated these challenges on the Koolau-Wailupe 46 kV Circuits in Oahu, Hawaii, which involved rugged, steep slopes and helicopter construction methods. It will detail the selection of micropiles over other foundation options, micropile and steel pile cap design methodologies, foundation construction, and quality control. Special attention will be given to the unique geology in the area, and why precise identification of saprolite and basalt layers was integral to the successful performance of the foundations. The intention is to communicate the benefits of a flexible solution based on continuous collaboration between design and construction.

The chemical and physical propertties of slag systems are of special interest to metallurgists, for nearly all metals are in contact with molten slags during the primary reduction from their ores and then during the subsequent refining and alloying processes that determine their ultimate use. These processes are carried out at high temperatures and involve such complex chemical systems that funda-mental scientific knowledge of the Properties and behavior of these slags is inadequate. Various hypotheses have been Proposed to explain known slag characteristics. The commonest of these regard the molten slag as constituted of compounds that are dissociated in varying degrees into their constituent oxides, as illustrated by Schenckl and the recent Papers of Chipman and co-authors. Another proposal is that these compounds dissociate by com-plete6 or partial ionization, the evidence for which has been reviewed by Martin and Derge.? whatever hypothesis is favored, the exact formulation of these compounds is incomplete. It is based on three principal types of information: 1. Studies of solidified 51% samples by X ray diffraction, petrography, and similar methods that can be used at room temperature. The correlation of this information with the high-temperature properties of the molten slag is uncertain. 2. Studies of slag-metal equilibria, which have the advantage of providing observations on the molten slag at high temperature. However, even these data present problems of interpretation because they require a complete knowledge of the metal phase. 3. Direct measurements of properties of molten slag at the temperature of greatest metallurgical interest. Viscosity, electrical conductivity, specific heats, and similar properties have been measured, but the data of this type are widely scattered and frequently difficult to interpret. Additional direct measurements of properties of molten slag that can be interpreted in terms of chemical behavior are required, and this paper shows that the standard physical-chemical measurement of reversible electrode potentials, which measure the activity of specific constituents, is a fruitful source of such information. The purpose of this investigation, therefore, was to find an electrode combination that would yield reversible electromotive force measurements when dipped into the molten slag to be studied.
