Visiting Spring Canyon, a historic coal mining district near Helper, Utah, I was impressed by the great accomplishments that had taken place there. A tour book of the region tells of a period that began in the early 1900's, when the land was still very much the Old West, when settlers lived out their lives in coal company towns and produced a resource that was to build a nation (Cunningham, F., 1990). Between 1912 and the early 1970's, 11 mines had come and gone in that narrow canyon less than 15 kilometers long. Spring Canyon is a historic district now, but I could not dwell too long on the richness of its history. I was there to look for evidence of PCBs.

THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Western Middle field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine-water problem in the anthra¬cite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8,9,10,11,1,2,15,16).8 The Western Middle field is in Schuylkill, Columbia, and Northumberland Counties in eastern Pennsylvania. It has an area of 120 square miles, is 42 miles long from Delano on the east to Trevorton on the west, and is 2 to 5 miles wide. In the Western Middle field are 58 underground water pools containing 38 billion gallons of water (5). Some of the pools overflow to the surface, and the water from others seeps into adjacent mines through permeable barrier pillars separating them from abandoned mines. Several active mines are interconnected to workings in abandoned mines, which are partly filled with water. These mines are separated by barrier pillars that are considered effective only below the altitude of the connections. In some abandoned mines, pumping stations maintain the water at altitudes where the hydrostatic pressure against the barrier pillars is not excessive and does not endanger adjacent active mines. If water in these abandoned mines is allowed to rise to where it can overflow into the active mines, it must be pumped from the active mines at lower altitudes; this materially increases the cost of pumping. It is estimated that from 1944 to 1948 approximately 30 percent of the water pumped to the surface was from abandoned mines.

The recent shale gas revolution in the United States has led to the drilling of hundreds of unconventional shale gas wells in active and future coal reserves in traditional coal-mining regions of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. This paper summarizes the impact of a shale gas well breach on the mine ventilation system of an operating longwall panel. This study utilizes a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) to simulate a single-panel longwall operation. The LIAM will be utilized to identify flow pathways and distribution patterns of gas from breached gas well scenarios in an operating longwall in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas is utilized to simulate a breached gas well. Preliminary findings suggest that the breached gas is diluted to regulatory levels and does not accumulate in the mine entries or in the longwall gob when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. Overall, this study characterizes the potential interaction between shale gas wells and the mine environment in the event of a gas well breach, which provides critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving safety, health, and welfare of miners.

Large-scale open cut mining in the Bowen Basin has been undertaken for over 40 years. During this period, improved mechanical capability and economics have allowed extraction to greater depths, resulting in post-mining landforms of increasing height. Rehabilitation practitioners face significant challenges in stabilising these landforms and require a comprehensive understanding of the Bowen Basin Coal Measures strata likely to be disposed of during mining. Knowledge regarding the potential behaviour of differing spoil materials (following disturbance) provides a rationale to maximise short- to medium-term surface stability of constructed landforms by identification, salvage and advantageous reuse of cladding resources as a means to minimise erosional risks.CITATION:Emmerton, B, Burgess, J, Baumgartl, T and Erskine, P, 2016. Shale gas wells can sometimes drill through coal reserves. Hypothetically, the caving of the gob from longwall coal mines may deform the shale gas well casing and potentially result in a breach. NIOSH researchers studied the permeability of the surrounding ground strata that may affect the potential for an inflow of gas into an underground mine environment. An overview and comparison of measured permeability values under differing cover depths (147 m and 353 m to the Pittsburgh coal seam) and mining cycle phase will be presented and discussed in this report. The findings highlight data-driven experimental evidence that affect the interaction between gas wells extraction and mining operations that may lead to potentially hazardous environments.

Micropiles transfer tension or compression forces as well as cyclic loads into the ground via skin friction. The Self Drilling Micropiles (SDM) can be utilized for permanent applications. The hollow bar simultaneously acts, as drilling rod, injection tube and reinforcement for the micropile. The SDM system can be used in any type of soil, including unstable soils, without the need for temporary casing. Injecting a cement grout through the hollow steel tendon ensures that the borehole is filled from the bottom to the top. The system is fast, simple, and flexible. The installation minimises noise, vibration, and spoil. There are many potential applications, including foundations, underpinning, resisting uplift, dynamic/cyclic load applications and geothermal installations. The SDM technology were introduced to India first time in the Indian history and utilised in the 4G and 5G network projects. The SDM challenge the traditional cast-in-situ piles in the 4G project and raft foundations in the 5G project. Utilisations of the tensile and the compressive strength capacity of SDM with smart solutions results in noticeably big costs, 17-38 % depending on the soil conditions and time savings. The cost of the SDM solutions was about 40% less than the cast-in-situ piles and raft foundations in an ongoing 5G project. The SDM were used successfully in the liquefiable soil types as well.

Este trabalho avaliou a efetividade do tratamento térmico de solubilização de uma liga de NiTi com 58,5%at. Ni comparado a uma liga de composição equiatômica, elaboradas por vacuum arc remelting (VAR). A solubilização foi realizada à 950 °C, em forno de atmosfera não controlada, com tempo de encharque de 2 h, seguido de resfriamento rápido em água à temperatura ambiente. Foram analisadas imagens de microscopia óptica e de microscopia eletrônica de varredura, após preparação metalográfica, das amostras fundidas e solubilizadas, bem como, quantificação da segunda fase pela análise de micrografias ópticas. As propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas pelo ensaio de dureza por microindentação Vickers. O tratamento térmico imposto resultou em alterações morfológicas na liga equiatômica e não foi possível verificar a dissolução completa dos precipitados da liga com elevado teor de Ni. Foi observado a diminuição da dureza com a solubilização do NiTi equiatômico, e aumento na liga Ni58,5%at.-Ti41,5%at.. Logo, para se obter uma solubilização ótima das ligas, se faz necessário um tempo de encharque maior.

"The Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, is investigating the preparation of pulverized coal for fuel. In this study the relative amount of surface in various products and samples had to be assessed. Because of the familiarity with screens and because of the simplicity of using the inverse ratio of the opening for ascertaining the amount of relative surface in the respective sizes, screens down to and including 270-mesh were used. This choice was made in full cognizance of the irregularity of screens, but it seemed that if the same screens were used throughout all the tests the relative values would be satisfactory.In dealing with the subsieve sizes, pneumatic elutriation was used to make several fractions to extend the sizing analysis into the range of hypothetical screens. This kind of a sizing analysis was thought necessary because it is familiar to all operators, and, furthermore, it is amenable to several ways of plotting curves that bring out the characteristics of various coals and various methods of grinding.The method of obtaining the data from which to set up the hypothetical screen scale is the subject of this paper. It consists in determining the average projected area of the particles in the respective elutriated products. By extending the ""area method"" to sieve sizes, a factor is found that may be applied to the subsieve sizes, and thus the scale is projected in a regular manner. This method avoids contentions about specific surface and steers clear of ""average diameter"" except as material sized on screens may be said to have an average diameter."

El objetivo de este trabajo técnico es mostrar las fuentes de desinformación que impiden el desarrollo de esos proyectos mineros y limitan una concertación viable y el diálogo con diversos stakeholders al no tener un consenso o entendimiento básico sobre temas importantes como son: 1) uso del agua y minería en cabeceras de cuenca, 2) uso de tierras por la actividad minera, 3) contaminación, 4) pasivos ambientales, 5) minería ilegal y 6) conflictividad social. Estas limitaciones en uso y manejo de la información así como la atmósfera social confrontacional persisten aun cuando se trabaje comprometidos con el desarrollo sostenible en un marco de responsabilidad social empresarial.

Durante mucho tiempo la explotación del azufre en el interior del Perú, ha sido de manera regular dado su bajo consumo nacional y cotización en el mercado peruano. Asi, solo ciertos yacimientos ubicados en el norte de nuestro país producen y generan divisas que no sobrepasan los 6 millones de soles. En el marco de esta situación, el objetivo del siguiente estudio, pretende reactivar el consumo nacional de los yacimientos del Sur del país, -en tanto volumen e importancia comercial por medio del uso de un método de beneficio apropiado. La formación de los yacimientos del Sur, a diferencia de los de Piura y Bayovar, se da por la emanación postvolcánica de gases sulfurosos, generandoimpregnaciones de azufre en las lavas y tufos del Terciario Superior y Cuaternario. Posteriormente se produjeron fracturas en las zonas contíguas de los volcanes, formando depósitos lenticulares de extensión variable. Dichos depósitos son superficiales puesto que solo cerca de este espacio se puede mantener la oxidación del sulfuro de hidrógeno y los gases están a temperatura baja para depositar azufre. En cuanto al costo del azufre tenemos el costo de explotación, beneficio, transporte y embarque. Finalmente, se deduce que la fundición del azufre como la filtración, soliflucción pueden ser favorables en el uso de métodos de explotación menos costosos, asi como el incremento de la explotación depende de un mercado común estable y de un cálculo exacto de los costos de producción.

It is well known that most roof falls in coal mines typically occur at and around intersections. Room-and-pillar and longwall coal mining systems typically develop 3-way and 4-way intersections. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated instability behaviour around 3-way and 4-way coal mine intersections through 3-D numerical modelling and limited field observations. Numerical analyses were performed for an Illinois longwall coal mine to identify factors that influence intersection stability. The stability of immediate roof, floor strata, and coal ribs at and around intersections are considered with pre-mining regional horizontal stress. Non-linear failure analyses used the Hoek-Brown failure criterion for rock mass. Progressive failure zones in and around intersections were developed. For a typical 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of the immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for a 3-way intersection but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. For the 3-way intersection, the effect of off-set distance was analysed. It was found that minimum off-set distance of about 10 m (centre to centre distance between two 3-way intersections) was required to minimize interaction between two intersections. A simple instrumentation program monitor ground movements around intersections. These data were used to design the intersection geometry that is now being practiced by the mine. The ore studied occurred in the Three Rivers area in China and was a silver-lead-zinc complex ore containing 400.52 g/t silver, 4.77 % lead and 3.47 % zinc. Silver, lead and zinc were the major valuable elements in the ore and copper, cadmium and tin were the associated elements to be comprehensively recovered, whereas arsenic was the harmful element. The element silver occurred mainly in freibergite with small proportion in dyscrasite and other silver minerals. The carrier minerals for silver were mainly galena and oxidized lead minerals and then sphalerite, arsenopyrite and pyrite. The ore contained numerous minerals with complex mosaic texture and the lead and zinc minerals enclosed each other multiply, which made the separation of the minerals in the ore very difficult. Experimental investigation on the beneficiation of the ore indicated that with flotation separation process it was very hard to obtain single lead concentrate or single zinc concentrate that would meet the requirement of market. In the meantime, during the separation process of lead and zinc, silver tended to be dispersed, resulting in a low recovery of silver. Therefore, a rational utilization technique for the ore should be a combined process of bulk flotation to reduce arsenic? sulphating roasting of silver-lead-zinc bulk concentrate-leaching with diluted sulphuric acid to separate silver, lead and zinc. With this process quality lead concentrate containing silver and high grade zinc product and silver product could be obtained. The recovery of silver, lead and zinc in flotation was 85.10%, 84.48% and 82.48%, respectively. The total recovery of silver, lead and zinc in chemical processing was 97.07%(sum of recovery of silver ingot and lead concentrate), 99.61% and 90.93%, respectively.

This Information Circular describes the development of block-caving methods and practices by the Miami Copper Co. at the Miami mine in Gila County, Arizona. It is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. This report gives a history of the district and outlines early prospecting and exploration including methods of sampling and estimation of ore tonnage and value at the Miami mine. Early mining methods are described, particularly those that influenced developments in the caving method. Mine exploration, development, and operating methods for block caving are described with particular attention to those factors, physical, economic, engineering, and managerial that have improved efficiency in the mining operations over a long productive period. Extraction, ventilation, wage system, safety, water supply, power plant, and shop facilities are discussed. The last section gives a brief sumary of such costs as are available for publication.

A cal e a fluorita são os principais componentes das escórias dessulfurantes. Entretanto, a busca por tecnologias consideradas menos poluentes vem tomando espaço neste setor. Dessa maneira, a necessidade de desenvolvimento dos processos faz com que as usinas siderúrgicas busquem melhorias no processo. Neste contexto, este trabalho tem como objetivo realizar um estudo de substituição da cal convencional por resíduo de mármore e também da fluorita por aluminato de cálcio. Os ensaios foram realizados a 1.600°C e as amostras foram retiradas periodicamente durante 25 minutos afim de se avaliar a dessulfuração ocorrida no metal. Os resultados indicam a viabilidade da utilização do resíduo e do aluminato de cálcio em escórias dessulfurantes para aço.

When used in suitable ground conditions, rock bolts can have advantages over other permanent tunnel lining solutions. Permanent rock bolts offer flexibility in tunnelling profile and rapid rock bolt installation can enable time and cost savings. There are also disadvantages when considering the suitability of rock bolts for permanent support installations. These generally concern achieving the specified durability requirement over the specified design life. By investigating alternate approaches to rock bolt installation, quality assurance (QA), monitoring and design life it may be possible to alleviate some of these concerns.The design and construction benefits that can be realised through the use of rock bolts are primarily related to reducing project program time. This time reduction could be realised if rock bolts are considered as a permanent solution, with the installation being completed as a part of the primary excavation cycle. Any reduction of the program could allow direct and indirect cost savings and in the case of a major project, allow the revenue stream to be realised earlier.Currently ambiguity exists where the treatment of rock bolts as permanent support components is inconsistent with that of (often identical) ground anchors, as utilised in stabilising cut and cover structures. The ground support design process, implementation and testing are generally similar, though the acceptance of rock bolts as long-term support elements is treated differently to ground anchors in technical specifications.This paper discusses some of the benefits available through the use of rock bolts. It offers different solutions to the concerns surrounding durability, including alternate approaches to installation, Quality Assurance practices and monitoring solutions. The selection of an alternate design life is also investigated as another means of alleviating concerns around long-term durability. The paper will also provide an indication of savings that could be expected through the use of rock bolts as part of a long-term support system.

Longwall mining is a form of underground mining and the principal extraction method for underground coal mining in Australia. The method is used in the mining of both thermal and metallurgical coal. The primary market for thermal longwall mines is that of the export market where price is governed against the Newcastle Thermal Benchmark index (globalCOAL, 2016).Australia’s thermal coal export outlook is considered moderate due to slower demand from major importing countries, as well as slowing domestic production. However, ‘Australia is projected to increase its share of world thermal coal exports and become the world’s largest exporter over the medium term as lower prices, increased domestic use and infrastructure constraints limit growth from other key suppliers’ (Office of the Chief Economist (OCE), 2016, pp 25, 58). On the contrary, and as a result of current global coal price trends, the basic economic principles of underground longwall coal mining are heavily stressed. From a life-of-mine perspective, influencing return on investment is at its greatest during project evaluation and execution. Appropriate and realistic economic assessment is paramount to ensuring the right outcomes are achieved under the current economic challenges.CITATION:Stambolie, T W C, 2016.
