O método de ensaio não destrutivo baseado na análise do ruído magnético Barkhausen (RMB) possibilita a obtenção de informações a respeito da microestrutura do material examinado e do estado de tensões presente no mesmo. Devido às particularidades do método, as medições devem ser realizadas mantendo-se constante a geometria entre a sonda e o objeto examinado, de forma a assegurar a confiabilidade das mesmas. Quando realizado manualmente, o processo de medição é demorado e sujeito a erros de posicionamento da sonda. Em trabalhos industriais ou em laboratório, esses erros podem resultar em interpretações incorretas, devendo ser reduzidos ao mínimo possível. Visando à redução do tempo de execução das medições e de análise e a eliminação de possíveis erros de posicionamento da sonda de inspeção, este trabalho propõe a automação do processo de medição de RMB em corpos de prova do tipo chapa. Compreende a construção de um dispositivo de movimentação XYZ acionado por motores de passo e do software “Plate Barkhausen”, com uma interface amigável, para controle da movimentação e da medição, além da análise dos dados.

The Weber pool in Washington County, Okla. (fig. 1), covers an area extending from 2 miles east and slightly north of Bartlesville, Okla., to a point approximately 2-1P tiles northeast of Dewey, Okla. The pool is a part of the area designated by the Standing Committee on Oil Field Nomenclature, Kansas-Oklahoma Division, Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association, as the Bartlesville-Dewey field. In the following discussion of the geology, development, and exploitation of the Weber pool, the writers, by means of structure maps, cross sections through various parts of the reservoir, and tabulated development data and production statistics, have recorded salient information on a field that was developed before .1910 in an Area that has been repressured since 1926. The total oil production to January 1, 19.0., from the 2,639 developed acres considered in this report, was approximately 14 million barrels, or a recovery of about 5,3;2 barrels per acre, or 227 barrels per acre-foot. The production of the estimated 18 million barrels of recoverable oil remaining in the Bartlesville sand reservoir will require the initiation of additional secondary-recovery practices on some of the leases and the application of a more systematic repressuring program on others.

Coal mining companies in Australia are managing the high-consequence risks across their operations more effectively by using an interactive online risk management system known as Riskgate Developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) at the University of Queensland, Australia, Riskgate contains detailed information about 11 high-consequence risk areas (called topics in the system) for opencut and underground coal mines (Table 1). The existing topics are: fires; strata control for underground mining; ground control for opencut mining; tires; isolation; collisions; explosions and explosives; manual tasks; and trips, slips and falls. Every Riskgate topic is focused on coal industry activities (mining, processing, transport and storage). The scope includes mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure (mobile, fixed plant, field equipment, buildings, road and rail transport), and all aspects of the mine life cycle from design through to decommissioning. The topics uniformly recognize that a loss of control can result in injury or fatality, equipment damage, production loss, reputation loss and environmental damage. However, the priority focus for Riskgate is the safety of mine personnel.

Safe and successful mine closure represents a fundamental work element that needs to accommodate the geochemical conditions existing at the completion of the mining and ore processing effort. Given the interests in limiting costs and time associated with mine closure efforts enhanced prior understanding of the geochemical conditions likely to exist upon exhaustion of the economic reserves can provide important benefits. The purpose of this paper is to document the benefits associated with geochemical modeling and understanding how the ore formation process may impact mine closure efforts, using one ore deposit type as an example. Specifically, this paper will emphasize the geochemical processes leading to the formation of sandstone-hosted uranium roll-type deposits and how the resultant concentrations and distributions of ore and gangue phases need to be incorporated into understanding the geochemical conditions projected to exist at the end of mineral recovery efforts. The paper will describe the evolution of geochemical conditions leading to ore body formation and the geochemical effects induced by open pit mining and how these may be used to understand both the geochemical controls and constraints on residual mine water. In addition, a discussion will be provided on how these conditions may be simulated by solution equilibria and kinetic modeling to develop optimum approaches to achieve applicable closure standards. This paper will also discuss specific augmentations to existing industry standard solution equilibria and kinetic models and associated thermodynamic databases to maximize the predictive accuracy of the geochemical modeling results. The benefits of understanding the electrochemically reactive behavior of uranium and associated gangue phases and incorporating this behavior into mine closure efforts will be presented. The culmination of the benefits of the geochemical modeling will ultimately be the development of a sustainable approach to uranium mine closure that is based upon an engineered environment designed to return the ore body to stable geochemical conditions.

Examples of used brick examinations to establish mechanisms of wear are given. The importance of physical and chemical properties are discussed. The use of simulative laboratory testing to aid in refractories development and selection is described.

As part of the British Steel Corporation?s development plan during the 1970?s, it was decided to concentrate its bulk steelmaking processes based on the BOS at 4 major Works with access to deepwater ore terminals, for the supply of high-grade imported ores. These 4 sites were at: - 1. Rarenscraig Works in Scotland where the ore terminal would be hilt at Hunterston on the west coast some 50 miles away. Bavenscraig was already an integrated Works but suffered from having to discharge ore 27 Glasgow tenxinus on the River Clyde, which could only accommodate vessels up to 25,000 tonnes. In the future, ore was to be unloaded at Runterston and shipped by a rail-link into Ravenscraig, The new ore terminal would have the potential to unload vessels up to 300,000 tonnes. - 2. Port Talbot Works in south Vales where the existing harbour was developed to discharge large ore carriers. This again was an existing Integrated Works and the benefits of the new harbour also applied to Llanwern Works which was another integrated Works some 50 dies to the east, which would now receive ore from Port Talbot.

Therefore I wished to tell you how, from these fires composed of forceful and horrible mate¬rials bringing harm and terror to men, a happy and pleasing effect is also produced and, instead of fleeing from it, the people willingly go to see it. Among others I remember that it was once customary to use these in Florence and in Siena, more than elsewhere. The chief feast day celebrated. by one of these cities is the day of the birth of Saint John, and the other is the Assumption of Our Lady, on the fifteenth of the month of August. In the morning they visit the shrines with great devotion and solemnity, displaying their pomp as much as possible, and later they hunt lions, wild bulls, untamed horses, and many other animals. Rapid growth and acceptance of engineered materials have changed the way we live. We have come to expect improved performance at less cost. At the same time, our awareness of societal and environmental issues created by these materials during and after their lifetime has been heightened. As a result, material lifecycle analysis is receiving considerable attention. Material lifecycle analysis evaluates the cost/effective tradeoffs at each stage of a material's life: feedstock, fabrication, performance, recycle, and disposal. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigates a material's lifecycle using technical cost models augmented with decision and impact analyses. Results of these studies are useful in gaining a better understanding of current material selections and illustrating the multifaceted issues associated with engineered materials in today's society.

In February of 1989 the Mission Complex of ASARCO Incorporated completed an expansion of its concentrator, raising the base mining rate from 25,900 TPO (28,500 STPD) to 37,200 TPO (41,000 STPD). The expansion was accomplished by extending the twelve existing Mission ball mills in length, by installing the grinding circuit from Asarco's idled Sacaton Concentrator along with various auxiliary equipment, and by modifications to the flotation circuit and water systems. This paper will give a brief history of the consolidation of the ore body which made the expansion possible and explain the various parts of the expansion.

This report details work performed and results obtained in a study of the water management aspects of oil shale mining and retorting in the Piceance Creek Basin. Three specific sites were investigated, and optimal water management systems for both conventional and in-situ extraction processes were generated. Water-related legal and environmental constraints on development were identified and the water management schemes were developed in compliance with these regulations. Limitations on shale oil production implied by limited water supplies were evaluated. Potential Basin-wide effects of development were evaluated using a computer model, and mitigation strategies were developed. Recommendations for additional investigation and analyses were presented.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently conducted full-scale explosion experiments; these experiments evaluated the strength characteristics of various seal designs used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests were conducted within the multiple entry section of PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) employing the only currently accepted test method endorsed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for seal design in American mines. These explosion tests are labor-intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. Therefore, the PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in-situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from tests in these chambers compare favorably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. Preliminary size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of standard seal designs as a function of entry size is also presented. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the new facilities also allow for the determination of the seal's ultimate failure pressure. This new approach shows promise as an alternative evaluation method for improving mine sealing technologies which, in turn, will enhance the safety of the underground personnel.

Despite increasing competition from mechanical methods of tunnelling, the drill and blast method is often still the most viable method of excavating tunnels in strong and abrasive rock. To advance a tunnel using drill and blast, explosives are loaded into boreholes in the rock and detonated according to a prearranged sequence. On detonation of the explosive, the rock is fractured and displaced from its original position, leaving behind the desired void. Among the secondary effects of a tunnel blast are ground vibrations caused by elastic disturbances that propagate away from the blasted tunnel face. The possibility that such ground vibrations may cause permanent damage to property and substantial nuisance has generated significant opposition to the use of drill and blast, particularly in urban areas. It is therefore essential that the blasting engineer is able to predict Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) vibration levels at locations in the vicinity of the blast site. Such predictive capability enables the engineer to design blasts so as to ensure that ground vibrations can be kept within acceptable levels. The objective of this project was to analyse data obtained from the ground vibration monitoring program undertaken during the drill and blast excavation of a hard rock tunnel in Central England. Seismograph recordings of tunnel blasts contain a vast amount of information that cannot possibly be expressed using a single PPV value. The main focus of the study was to investigate whether predictive capability could be improved by using scaled distance models derived for selected PPV components relating to specific detonator timings in a given tunnel round. This study has established a method of analysis that can unlock this information for predictive purposes. By permitting the extraction of sub-event Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) values and allowing Scaled Distance (SD) models to be derived for individual period numbers or groups of period numbers, the method has the potential to vastly improve PPV prediction from tunnel blasting. The method established could also help diagnose blasting problems and help target blast design modifications, resulting in improved efficiency and excavation rates.

One of the steps in the extractive metallurgy of lead is a refining process called drossing. Hot dross is mixture of impurity compounds that form on the surface during the cooling of lead blast furnace bullion, and in Missouri, the main impurities are copper and sulfur. The slow cooling of bullion throws out of solution all other minor impurity elements (or their compounds) which are much less soluble at lower temperatures (mainly nickel, arsenic, iron, and zinc). The transfer of bullion from the blast furnace to the refinery and the subsequent hot drossing step cause fugitive emission of lead-containing fume and dust, which creates a plant hygiene problem. One cause of the emissions is the high vapor pressure of lead and its compounds during transmission of = 1000 °C bullion to the drossing kettle. Another cause is the lifting of dross dust during manual skimming of dross. The environmental problems associated with the traditional hot drossing process provided an incentive to investigate a new drossing process that avoids contact between plant air and hot bullion or dross. A key aspect of the process development was a detailed mineralogical examination of dross from two different bullions. The bullion samples were cooled at different rates, and the dross filtered out and examined. The morphology, phase identification, and composition of the dross was examined by optical and SEM microscopy. The principal dross phases were copper and cuprous sulfide, galena, a complex sulfide containing copper, nickel and lead, and speiss (containing nickel, cobalt, iron, copper, lead, and arsenic compounds). The copper was acicular, with nickel and arsenic in solid solution. The cuprous sulfide was largely digenite in a granular or dendritic form. A substantial part of the dross was solidified matte with a eutectic microstructure, consisting mainly of CU2S and PbS. Small particles (some of which had a eutectic microstructure) never floated to the surface of the lead during the slowest cooling rate, thus indicating that flotation of tiny matte droplets and dross crystals is exceedingly slow. The success in separating dross and lead by centrifugal filtration suggests its application in industry as a replacement for traditional hot drossing.

It has long been common practice to conduct drilling and blasting operations at surface quarries in the Midwest in close proximity to near-vertical highwalls. The main reasons for such an approach, and the limited use of adequate safety controls, can be associated with higher costs, operational constraints, lithological requirements, property boundary restrictions, inadequate quarry planning, or a lack of understanding of highwall risks. Working in proximity to highwalls, without effective controls, exposes personnel and equipment to increased risk of incidents. In recent history, there have been isolated incidents involving equipment damage, or personnel injury/fatality around the United States. However, the Midwest market has largely escaped the effects of such incidents, even though the exposure rate is high. Awareness about this matter greatly increased on January 19th, 2021, when a significant incident occurred at a quarry near Green Bay, Wisconsin. As a crew was loading a typical blast near a highwall, a ground fall occurred, and multiple rock fragments struck a laborer working on the bench below. This individual sustained significant and life-altering injuries.

The preferred orientation and earing characteristics of ZS aluminum were studied. An empirical correlation was obtained relating earing behavior and variation of mechanical properties for face-centered cubic metals. Strain-ratio mecsurements for ZS were found to be in good agreement with Hill's theory of plastic anisotropy. DIRECTIONALITY in sheet metals may be revealed by earing in a cupping test, or by the variation of mechanical properties of tensile specimens taken at different angles to the rolling direction. However, no simple correlation appears to exist between earing and variation in mechanical properties in metals and alloys studied.1-5 Aluminum of commercial purity (known as 2S, with a specified minimum of 99.0 pct Al) cast by the direct casting process was chosen in the present investigation since ears at 45° or 0°, 90° can readily be obtained. Preferred orientation is often the principal cause of uneven metal flow, such as earing, and variation in mechanical properties. Consequently, the preferred orientation characteristics of 2s aluminum were initially studied using both X-ray diffraction and micrographic techniques. The variation of mechanical properties with angle to the rolling direction was next determined in an effort to clarify the apparent lack of correlation of earing behavior with mechanical properties for face-centered cubic metals. Strain-ratio*5,8 measurements were finally conducted to determine first, if the maximum values of the strain ratio occurred at the earing positions, and second, if Hill's theory of plastic anisotropy7 is applicable to other face-centered cubic metals such as aluminum. Detailed treatments, working, and heat treating are not given in this paper since this study is not concerned with the methods to produce earing, but to correlate earing with other properties and characteristics of the material. The percentage of earing was measured using the formula specified by the x—Y Aluminum Association, -------- X 100 = pct earing, where x is the height of the ear and y is the height of the valley from the bottom of the cup. Preferred Orientation Characteristics of 2S X-ray Studies: Beck and coworkers8 have determined that the rolling texture of 2s after 95 pct cold reduction may be approximately described by four equivalent ideal orientations near (123) [121]. Also, the recrystallization or annealing texture of 2s aluminum consists of four components of the (123) [l21] type, retained from the rolling texture, and of a (100) [001] or cube texture component." Fig. 1 illustrates the typical appearance of deep drawn earing cups with the corresponding X-ray diffraction patterns. The X-ray patterns were taken with copper radiation using the structure-integrating method'" in which the specimen is scanned during the X-ray exposure. The rolling direction was vertical and the rolling plane was perpendicular to the horizontal X-ray beam. It was found that an increase in the retained rolling texture component resulted in a greater 45" ear height, while an increase in the recrystallization texture component (i.e., cube texture) caused greater 0°, 90° earing. X-ray diffraction studies of 2s cold rolled to final thickness followed by a final anneal have shown that the rolling texture, and also the retained component of the rolling texture after annealing, are increased with greater cold-rolling reduction. The preferred orientation characteristics of 2s sheets given an intermediate anneal between cold rolling followed by a final anneal were found to depend on the position of the intermediate anneal during cold rolling. For instance, three identical samples of 2s homogenized ingot, each 1 in. thick, were given the following cold-rolling and annealing treatments: 1—50 pct reduction, intermediate anneal, 96 pct reduction to 0.020 in. and a final anneal; 2—75 pct reduction, intermediate anneal, 92 pct reduction to 0.020 in. and a final anneal; and 3—90 pct reduction, intermediate anneal, 80 pct reduction to 0.020 in. and a final anneal. The intermediate and final annealing treatments consisted of a 70°F per hr heating rate, held 6 hr at 800°F and air cooled. Typical X-ray patterns after each of these treatments are shown in Fig. 2. The attention of operators of oil-producing properties long has been directed toward methods of' disposing of petroleum wastes as well as the disposal of oil-field brines. The problem of disposing of' petroleum wastes is not easy to solve, and although many operators are to be commended for the efforts they have made, much work remains to be done before the problem can be considered solved. Petroleum wastes include emulsions of petroleum and brine or mixtures of petroleum and sand that cannot be "broken down" or treated economically by known methods of separating petroleum from deleterious matter; crude petroleum that escapes from pipe lines, fittings, and tanks because of holes in the lines, leaky connections, or some accident; and oil-saturated materials that accumulate accidentally or otherwise an the normal operation of an oil-producing property.

"Printed circuit board (PCB) is the main part of any electric or electronic device, providing mechanical support and electric connection for the board eclectic components such as capacitors, resistors, diodes etc. PCB consists of non-conductive substrate overlaid with one or more layers of copper sheets. They also contain appreciable amounts of base metals (copper, nickel, tine, and aluminum) and precious metals (gold, silver, and rare earth elements (REE)) which end up in the landfill at the PCB end-of-life.PCB recycling E-waste in general is a profitable business; many valuable raw materials, precious and base metals, can be extracted with high purity. Approximately, one metric tonne of PCBs may contain 80-1500 g of gold and 160–210 kg of copper. The precious metals recovered from PCBs occur at concentrations higher than commercially mined minerals. Also PCB recycling is very important to our environment since many heavy metals (e.g. lead) may be leached from the landfills to the underground reservoirs. In Jordan, however, the work conducted on E-waste and PCB recycling in particular is limited; currently most of the E-waste is either exported or dumped in the landfill.In this work, a combination of physical (magnetic separation), physicochemical (flotation), and chemical methods (leaching) were used to compare metals concentrations in leach liquors produced from a concentrates resulted from a combination of these methods. It was found the leach liquor of the magnetic fraction of the PCB coarse size gave the highest concentration of Fe, Al, and Ni while concentration of Cu was higher in leach liquor of nonmagnetic sink fraction. On the other hand, metals concentration almost similar for both sink and float of the fine size fractions, indicating even distribution of metals concentrations in the fine size fractions."

A 1-year program of exploratory research, to determine the feasibility of radar exploration in advance of coal mining, has been completed. Advance detection of obstructions including faults, clay veins, abandoned wells, and pyritic concretions would improve the safety and efficiency of mining. Initial calculations based on laboratory tests of the RF electrical properties of bituminous coals indicated feasibility; radar waves at frequencies below 100 MHz should be detectable through tens to hundreds of meters of coal and be well-reflected by clay, pyrite and metal obstructions. Using a proprietary, experimental, VHF short-pulse "mining radar" system, two cycles of field testing and equipment improvement were completed. Measurements were made in three bituminous coal mines, a quarry, and a salt mine. Comparisons were made with ground-penetrating radar equipment developed by others for salt dome exploration and for military tunnel detection. The proprietary mining radar equipment and techniques used were found to be the most effective known for coal exploration, but further improvements are needed; one major problem in all systems is interfering clutter signals arising in the equipment and from mine room reverberations through leakage coupling of the antennas to the air. Nevertheless, several practical goals have been achieved: excellent radar reflections were received and identified through up to 30 feet of coal; reflections from a wet, abandoned drill hole were identified by their polarization property and detected at distances up to 272 feet, and mine-wall reflections were detected at distances up to 735 feet (both through salt); propagation through and reflections from large vertical clay veins in coal were demonstrated; experimental results agree reasonably well with theory. The results and experience gained during the project affirm the feasibility of the method. They also provide a firm basis for the development of a practical radar technology for exploration in advance of mining. No Subject Inventions, as defined in the contract, were made in the course of this work.
