"INTRODUCTION The Rodessa oil field in Marion and Cass Counties, Tex., Miller County, Ark., and Caddo Parish, La., was discovered in August 1930, when a well drilled to a depth of 5,506 feet in Caddo Parish, close to the surface trace of the Rodessa fault, produced gas in commercial quantities. During the next 5 years 21 gas wells were drilled, and a large reserve of natural gas was developed in the high part of the Rodessa structure underlying the Massive Anhydrite member of the Glen Rose formation.In July 1935 oil was discovered on the flank of the structure when a well drilled to 6,048 feet also in Caddo Parish, was completed as an oil well. The discovery of oil in the Rodessa structure initiated art intensive development program of more than usual interest to geologists, engineers, and operators in the petroleum and natural-gas industry. The complex nature of the different reservoirs, the large volume of ""free"" gas under high pressures and temperatures in the upper part of the reservoirs, and the high gas:oil ratios of some of the wells during the early production of oil presented many problems the solution of which taxed the ingenuity of those responsible for the development and exploitation of the Rodessa field.Early waste of gas and resultant dissipation of reservoir energy led to State intervention, which brought about effective regulation of the quantity of gas blown to the air. Oil production from wells producing more than 2.000 cubic feet of gas per barrel of oil was restricted, and oil allowables generally were based equally upon acreage and upon reservoir pressures. Consequently, oil-production statistics of the field are closely associated with gas:oil ratios and reservoir pressures.The primary object of this report is to present factual and statistical data on well performance in the Rodessa field and to show established trends under certain operating methods and practices in high-pressure gaseous reservoirs, which have been carefully developed and outlined by modern technique and exploited under close engineering supervision.The large size of the Rodessa field, it’s fairly well defined gas caps, and a somewhat definite water table in a part- of the oil- and gas-producing region are of special interest and importance in a study of the fluid and energy relationships in reservoirs. Consequently, the results of much of the authors' work in collecting and compiling date are presented in the form of tables, maps and cross sections to show the relative thicknesses of the different oil-and gas-producing members and their permeability and porosity relationships, and, when possible, the variations in stratigraphy are exhibited in cross sections. Results of a detailed analysis of cores from a number of wells also are presented in tabular and graphic form."

On the basis of laboratory test results a comparison of various parameters (unconfined compressive strength, CERCHAR and LCPC abrasivity indexes, mineralogy) is presented and discussed in order to outline certain correlations between them. Samples cover a wide range of lithological types coming from various sites of tunnels. "L'objectif principal recherché lors du broyage d 'un minerai est de libérer adéquatement ses valeurs utiles en vue de leur concentration ultérieure. La pratique courante consiste à tenter d'obtenir un produit de broyage d'une granulométrie constante. Malheureusement, les propriétés texturales des minéraux utiles varient naturellement dans un gisement et une telle stratégie n'entraine pas toujours pour ces minéraux un degré de libération constant. Pour un rendement optimal du procédé de concentration, cette variable très importante doit donc être périodiquement vérifiée.Jusqu'à maintenant, la plupart des études de libération des minerais se font en examinant des sections polies de particules du minerai broyé. Le GRAAIM a récemment assemblé un système modulaire d'analyse d'images qui servira en grande partie à des mesures automatiques du degré de libération des minéraux. Le système s'avère relativement peu coûteux comparativement à la plupart des analyseurs de texture conventionnels si l'on considère que plusieurs de ses composantes, par exemple le miniordinateur, sont utilisées à une foule d'autres applications, et il permet de plus une grande souplesse d'utilisation puisque l'on a qu'à construire des algorithmes de mesure et de calcul en fonction de l'objectif recherché. Des programmes particuliers permettant des études automatiques de libération sur des sections polies de particules ont ainsi été élaborés. Ils permettent également des mesures de teneurs et de distributions granulométriques apparentes des particules. Des résultats obtenus dans le cas de minerais de fer sont brièvement présentés afin d'illustrer la technique."

In order to store high-level radioactive waste underground, the German repository concept considers clay, crystalline and salt formations as suitable host rock materials (National Citizens’ Oversight Committee, 2024). The current research projects of the Chair Underground Mining Methods at TUBAF (Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg) in nuclear waste repositories mainly focus on storage within salt formations. In this scenario, the high-level radioactive waste is supposed to be packed into specifically designed containers and then transported underground and emplaced in horizontal storage drifts. The residual temperature of the radioactive waste leads to the question if there are optimization possibilities for waste handling, the storage and the long-term emplacement of such high temperature level waste. A deeper understanding of the heat transmission from the container into the host rock might lead both towards possibly shorter surface interim storage times as well as size optimization possibilities of the repository itself. TUBAF has conducted research that successfully proved that an optimized container positioning yields more favorable thermal patterns and can be achieved with conventional mining equipment.

Correlations between mass spectra and molecular structures of 186 organic sulfur compounds are discussed. The olefinic ions, the alkyl ions, the CnE2n+1 ions, the m/e 61 ions, and the m/e 35 ions in the spectra of thiols are related to molecular structure. In the spectra of sulfides, the olefinic ions, the m/e 61 ions, the m/e 35 ions, the CnH2n+1S+ ions, and the CnH2n+1SH+ ions are correlated with molecular structure. For disu1fides, the correlations relate HSSF+& and RSSH+ ions to molecular structure. Base peaks of alkylthiophenes are correlated to their molecular structures. Some unimolecular reactions of sulfur compounds in the mass spectrometer are considered. A cyclic intermediate is suggested for the reaction which produces m/e 47, CH3S+, and m/e 48, CH4S+, ions in the spectra of sulfides. An expanded ring is suggested as a possible intermediate in the reactions of thiophenes. Heats of formation of sulfur-containing ions and their appearance potentials are presented in tabular form. Ionization potentials for sulfur-containing radicals and molecules are also given. Discussion of the spectra, tabulated in the appendixes, provides an insight into the relationship of the molecular structure of a compound to the mass-to-charge ratios and the intensities of the ions in its mass spectrum. Correlations of the mass spectra with molecular structures are empirically developed by observing regularities in the spectra of the reference compounds. Correlations extend the usefulness of mass spectra because they can be employed to determine the molecular structure of an unknown compound.

"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. Le tri granulométrique du minerai offre une plus-value intéressante en termes de traitement du minerai à plus faible teneur extrait des mines ; il permet par ailleurs l’acheminement vers le concentrateur de minerai à plus haute teneur et la revalorisation des stériles dans le minerai. On met généralement l’accent sur la susceptibilité du minerai au triage et sur les réductions connexes en termes d’utilisation de l’énergie, de l’eau et de biens consommables. Cependant, l’aménagement physique de l’équipement a une incidence non négligeable sur le coût installé d’une usine de concentration, et les répercussions sur l’aménagement de l’installation d’un circuit de triage du minerai dans l’usine doivent être soigneusement examinées. Sulphuric acid pressure leaching is the process of choice to recover nickel and cobalt from laterites with variable iron and magnesium contents. The latter influences the acidity levels required for effective leaching of nickel and cobalt, and during leaching, iron is rejected in-situ as hematite. Classical solid/liquid separation is performed via a CCD circuit, the performance of which depends upon the size and shape of precipitated particles. In this paper, precipitates obtained by acid-leaching of various lateritic feeds at 270°C are characterized using SEM/EDX and laser particle size analysis. It is shown that as acidity increases, the shape of the precipitates gradually changes from platelets to spheres, thus improving the S/L separation properties of the residue. The use of hydrogen ion concentration “at temperature,” calculated from a speciation analysis, allows the explanation of this change of morphology independently of the type of the ore feed. The possibility of precipitating magnesium sulphate “at temperature” is also discussed. In order to take advantage of this precipitation for scale reduction (as has been proposed in the past) without compromising the residue quality, [H+] “at temperature” must be controlled within an optimum range.

Bulk-solids handling systems are often the most over-looked component and thereby weakest links in a processing plant’s value chain. Since their performance can dictate that of the entire operation, they actually deserve special attention. When designing a liquid handling plant, density and viscosity are well known and commonly used as design parameters. Bulk solids however, differ. While the design process is similar, the relevant parameters in handling bulk solids are instead friction, cohesive strength, compressibility, and permeability. These then vary depending on the mineralogy, particle size distribution and shape, moisture content, storage time-at-rest, temperature, and consolidation pressure. With so many variables, it becomes important to characterize each individual bulk solid across the full range of representative process conditions within the handling system, plant wide – or if you are not very lucky, suffer the consequences of poor material flow. Measuring flow properties and applying them correctly in bulk solid handling system design reduces project risk, saves significant capital, and drastically increases throughput, especially when done in the early stages of a project. Crushed stone operations have become more difficult due to rising costs of labor and equipment, with the consequent reduction in profit margins. Competition from other operators and the encroachment of vertically integrated companies place severe restrictions on available markets. The seasonal demand for stone precludes any definite production level, and changes in productivity have to be accommodated. These influence profitability, and therefore production plans must be continuously adjusted to keep pace with rapidly changing conditions. The basic problem of stone companies seeking to maximize profits is one of balancing stone production costs, costs of inventory holding and stock-piling, marketing costs and any other charges accruing over time against the selling price of stone. Because of high peak demands, slack period production must be stored and then distributed to supplement peak period production. For a multi-plant operation, there is a need to evaluate at the same time the interaction between the plants and the various marketing sectors. In a multi-plant operation with different production capacities and production costs, stone producers are interested in the answers to the following questions: 1. How much stone should be produced at each plant in each time period? 2. What should be the optimum stone shipment from each plant to each market? 3. What are the effects on net returns and shipping plans, if production capacities are altered at the plants? These questions have many different answers that, will satisfy demands. From the point of production scheduling, the minimum production cost may be the objective. From the inventory standpoint, the best solution will be to synchronize production with sales. Photogrammetry surveys were used to document a footwall slab failure that occurred at a surface coal mine located on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. Photographs taken before and after the failure provided the pre- and post-failure geometry of the slope and the failed slab. A 2D finite element model was constructed using slope profiles. The model contained joint elements that represented the bedding surface upon which the slab slid and the model was used to analyze the footwall slope. The in situ stresses, rock properties and the bedding surface shear strength and stiffness properties are discussed. The process of mining out a valley and exposing a highwall was modelled. As expected, elastic valley rebound occurred in the model, but shear stress and shear displacement reversals along the slip surface were also observed. The modelling results provided new insight into shear strength degradation that occurs when the pit floor approaches and then passes a specific point in the highwall.

A significant news item appearing in a coal mining journal in November 1969 stated simply that a Caterpillar D-333-CNA engine had received Bureau of Mines Schedule 31 approval. This item occurring at the time a new mining property in Martin County of East Kentucky was being prospected and prepared for mining, resulted in the manage-ment of Martin County Coal Corporation asking the question, "Why not use diesel equipment in our new operation?" Martin County Coal Corporation is part of the A. T. Massey Coal Company, Incorporated organization. The property being developed is on a 17,500 acre leasehold obtained from Pocahontas Land Corporation and lies in the Wolf Creek area of Martin County. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this undeveloped section of Kentucky to tap a huge reserve of steam coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all of the production from Martin County Coal Corporation mines which ultimately is projected to be 2,000,000 tons annually. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton are being deep mined now and it is in those mines that the diesel haulage equipment was introduced. This paper will endeavor to trace the steps loading to the introduction of the first diesel-powered Wagner Mining Equipment Company ScoopTram in a coal mine in America. It will further elaborate on the features which make this unit a very versatile and useful utility unit as well as the safety features which are incorporated in the machine. "The Conservative Government 's budget proposals brought forward on December 11, 1979 have been withdrawn, but they are far from dead. On the contrary, a number of those budget proposals, especially the ones which would close loopholes and result in other technical changes being made to the Income Tax Act, should be considered to be alive and well.It is not unreasonable to expect the next government, of whatever political persuasion, to reintroduce many of these technical changes in the next federal budget. For that reason, last December's budget may have offered an interesting preview of what the mining industry and other taxpayers can expect in 1980. It is quite possible that some of these changes may be effective as of the original dates announced in the withdrawn budget proposals.This month, ""Tax Notes"" reviews the main pro visions of Mr. Crosbie's December, 1979 budget, with a primary focus on the changes that would have affected the resource sector.It must be emphasized that all of the budget proposals discussed herein have been withdrawn, that none of them are law and that any actual changes in our tax rules will have to be dealt with by the new Parliament that will be assembled following the February 18 election. December 1979budget withdrawnThe federal budget proposals brought forward by Finance Minister John Crosbie on December II, 1979 were withdrawn as a result of the defeat of the Conservative Government on a motion of non-confidence in the House of Commons on December 13. However, it appears quite possible that at least some of the proposals may be introduced into Parliament at a future date, possibly with retroactive effect.In a press release issued by the Department of Finance, Finance Minister John Crosbie stated that if the Conservative Government is returned to power, it will reintroduce all of the measures contained in his December II budget.Mr. Crosbie stated that all of the income tax measures contained in the budget would be reintroduced, effective on the dates indicated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion tabled on December II. Some of the more important measures in December II budget, and their effective dates as indicated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion, are discussed below.The December budget had also introduced or increased excise taxes or duties on gasoline, wines, cosmetics and photofinishing. If the Conservative party is re-elected, these measures will be reintroduced with prospective effect (i.e . effective as of new dates to be announced in the new budget)."

A brief resume follows of some recent activities of the Division of Coal-Mine Inspection that have had a favorable effect on health, safety, and the reduction of injuries at coal mines: 1. The Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines on July 24, 1946, after consultation with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors during their inspections of bituminous-coal and lignite mines as a basis for determining the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior October 8, 1953, following further consultations with representatives of management and mine workers, and was incorporated by reference in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous-coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, between the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bituminous-coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reporting to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Mine Safety Code. The inspectors were active in making prompt investigations of hazardous mines that had been closed by order of the Coal Mines Administrator to determine if enough improvements had been made to allow the mines to reopen. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines they found to be imminently dangerous, but such authority (under Executive Order 9728) was removed on June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.

Royal Nickel Corporation is developing the Dumont Nickel Project, a large nickel sulphide deposit located near the town of Amos, Québec. The nickel occurs as pentlandite, heazlewoodite, and awaruite. The relatively low grade ore can be processed to a very high grade nickel concentrate, containing 29% Ni. The absence of copper and precious metals in the ore renders this concentrate amenable to processing by dead roasting in a fluid-bed roaster and smelting in an electric furnace to produce ferronickel for sale to stainless steel producers. Laboratory test work and conceptual engineering design was completed to demonstrate the amenability of Dumont concentrate to produce ferro-nickel.

Entrainment is a process by which fine and ultrafine particles are transferred to the flotation froth from the top of the flotation pulp, and eventually discharge to the concentrate product, evenwhen they are not attached to gas bubbles. Therefore, entrainment can be considered as a two-step process, one at the upper layer of the pulp to the flotation froth, and the other from froth to the concentrate. Entrainment is inevitable for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic minerals and is one of the significant factors affecting concentrate grade. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the entrainment mechanisms and entrainment models, as well as a summary of the main factors affecting entrainment and the techniques thatmay be used to lower or eliminate entrainment. Based on the review, we point out that selective aggregation of fine and ultrafine gangue minerals using appropriate process aids (polymeric depressants, inorganic salts, etc.) to increase their particle sizes appears to be a convenient and economical method. Directions of further research along this line are discussed.
