Haul trucks have the potential to generate large amounts of respirable dust. This respirable dust has been shown to be a health hazard to personnel, especially if it has a high silica content. Lack of dust sampling data from haul trucks prompted the completion of a study to quantify respirable dust concentrations. These field studies were conducted measuring instantaneous respirable dust at stationary locations from passing haul trucks at a stone quarry and at a coal mine site. Fugitive dust levels from haul trucks were analyzed to characterize dust dispersion. This analysis indicates safe following distances for haul trucks and other heavy equipment to avoid overexposure of respirable dust from the lead haul truck.

GIS documents are of great interest for a quick and low-cost determination of areas endangered by rockfalls. They allow (i) the detection of potential instabilities from steep slopes and cliff areas, and (ii) the preliminary estimation of potential run-out areas by means of a so-called cone method. After the presentation of the tools used to compute these areas, the paper focuses on two methods developed for a preliminary hazard mapping, one at regional scale and the other at local scale. Nach der Vorstellung der zur Berechnung der bedrohten Gebiete benötigten Hilfsmittel stellt der Artikel zwei Methoden zur vorläufigen Gefahrenkartierung in lokalem und regionalem Maßstab vor. Les SIG sont très intéressants pour une détermination rapide et peu onéreuse des zones affectées par des chutes de blocs. Ils permettent une détection des zones potentiellement instables et une estimation sommaire des zones de propagation des blocs par une méthode dite des cônes. Après la description des outils utilisés pour définir ces zones, l’article expose deux méthodologies élaborées pour un zonage préliminaire du danger, l’une à l’échelle régionale et l’autre à l’échelle locale.

Tennessee was the leading producer state with 63 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. In addition to a range of pyrometallurgical options, Mintek specialises in DC arc furnace technology and has pilot plant facilities up to 5.6 MVA, as well as a strong base in process and arc modelling. Industrial processes have been developed for ferrochromium production, ilmenite smelting, and cobalt recovery from slag. Recent work has been done on such processes as the production of ferronickel from laterite ores, the fuming and condensation of magnesium, and the recovery of platinum group metals from 'difficult' feedstocks.

Sulphuric acid plants now and then see unexpected increases in SO2 emissions. Our experience is that it is not always easy for the acid plants to pinpoint the exact reason for the SO2 increase. Sometimes a catalyst bed is sacrificed even though reliable temperature readings and gas analyses could have verified satisfactory activity. Hence the leaking heat exchanger is never discovered and after the shutdown the SO2 emissions are still too high. This paper will look into some basic catalyst management tools: good record keeping is a necessity for collection of representative catalyst samples; reliable operating data is an inevitable starting point for all analysis; and trending of operating data is a must for plant optimization and troubleshooting. In addition, these catalyst management tools will give continuous updated knowledge of the catalyst status in each bed, providing the basis for a more effective replacement strategy. The most typical reasons for increasing SO2 emissions will be presented together with easy guidelines for cross-checking operating data, temperature optimization and good record keeping.

"As part of the mining engineering curriculum, students are required to be placed in industry for vacation work or work-integrated learning (WIL). In this paper we review work-based placement as done at the four South African mining schools: the University of Johannesburg, the University of Pretoria, the University of the Witwatersrand, and the University of South Africa.Key aspects of past and current WIL (pre- and post-graduation) practices that may need attention are highlighted for consideration by all universities that provide professional qualifications. Work-directed theoretical learning, problem-based learning, project-based learning, workplace learning, and simulated work experiences are discussed as legitimate approaches to WIL.Regardless of the choice each institution makes, commitments of universities, preparedness of university teachers, and the desire for equity and excellence will play an important role in the provision of WIL.DefinitionsAccredited Qualification: a qualification awarded on successful completion of an accredited programme.Advisory Boards (or Committees): are essential infrastructure for a WIL curriculum that is built on the integration of the workplace and the university. This requires the collaboration of experts from both environments. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Nam San copper-gold deposit was discovered in 2011 and is a likely blind extension of the Permian age Phu Kham structurally deformed porphyry/skarn copper-gold deposit.The Nam San mineralisation is hosted within a dominantly sericite altered schist unit located to the north of the current Phu Kham open pit operation and is overthrust by an allochthonous barren cover sequence of limestone, granite and sandstone. Reinterpretation of the Phu Kham geology developed the concept of a possible telescoped porphyry copper-gold system at depth. Initial drilling intersected remobilised copper mineralisation in a basal conglomerate, confirming the concept. A reconnaissance vector array induced polarisation (IP) survey identified a deep chargeability anomaly from which a drilling target was developed from 3D inversion modelling of a detailed follow up dipole-pole-dipole anomaly. Drilling of the chargeability anomaly intersected the blind Nam San copper-gold mineralisation beneath the thrusted cover sequence.The key discovery parameters are the result of an integrated exploration program that included reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy, which developed the concept of a deep blind orebody, IP surveys capable of penetrating through the barren cover and a commitment to a deep directional drilling program to test these concepts and targets. The Florida Department of Transportation District 6 (FDOT D6) began a study in 1987 for a master plan to improve the traffic circulation and congestions between the Port of Miami (POM) and downtown Miami, FL. This study included a tunnel connection between two man-made islands, the Watson and the Dodge islands. Though a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) was completed in 1992, the project remained on hold for about 10 years. In 2002, Florida Turnpike took over this project, re-evaluated its benefits to the lo-cal communities, determined its feasibility (specifically the tunnel options) and established a probable cost. In 2005, the FDOT D6 regained its charge over the project and concluded that a bored tunnel under Biscayne Bay is feasible. Its primary components are: ? Widening of the MacArthur Causeway Bridge, to accommodate truck traffic to the Port of Miami. ? A tunnel connection between Watson Island and Dodge Island, where the POM is located. ? Connections to the POM roadway system, either for the traffic from the city of Miami or for the truck traffic from I-395 to the POM. The project will improve access to and from the POM and provide a dedicated roadway connector linking the POM with the MacArthur Causeway (State Route 41/1) and I-395, specifically for the trucks in and out of the POM without going through downtown Miami. As identified in the project information memorandum (PIM), its primary objectives are to: ? Improve access to the POM, helping to keep it competitive and ensuring its ability to handle projected growth in its cruise and cargo operations. [ ] ? Improve traffic safety in downtown Miami by removing POM traffic, trucks and buses from the congested downtown street network and, in doing so, facilitate ongoing and future development plans in and around downtown Miami.

GOLD has played a part in the development of Australia. The total yield exceeds SIX hundred million pounds sterling, while the glamour of gold-mining and the unfailing demand for the product have enhanced its influence. The production is still considerable, but the yield is less than one-quarter of that twenty years previously, while the number of men employed has dropped from 70,000 to 11,000. Not only has there been a marked decline in production, but it is anticipated that thisdecline will continue, and continue more markedly. It is therefore desirable to ascertain the causes of the decline and inquire into means for diminishing or preventing it.The problem under discussion is far from being only local. Finlay states: The grand feature of the history of the business has been the progress of an economic cycle unfavourable to gold milling. The USA yield fell from $101,000,000 to $44,000,000.South Afriea has for some time produced one-half of the world's gold; yet in the Mining and Scientific Press of 11th February, IH22, General Smuts is quoted as saying that if the premium disappeared entirely 24 out of 34 mines would shut down. This paper reviews the annual status of the New Zealand mining industry (metallic minerals and coal) including key aspects such as mineral production, mineral exploration expenditure, commodity price trends, key industry players, market activity and other significant commercial factors.   Strong commodity prices during 2006 have been underpinned by a number of key factors including US dollar weakness and emerging market demand, particularly from countries such as China and India. In real terms commodity prices have recovered significantly since 2002 and are currently at 20-year highs.   New Zealand exploration spending on metallic minerals (predominantly gold) is at a 15 year high driven by rising global commodity prices. New Zealand gold production in 2006 was about 340,000 oz and is expected to grow in 2007 as new mines at Frasers and Globe-Progress (Oceania Gold) and Favona (Newmont) come on stream. Gold production broadly lags 10 years behind exploration spending and exploration activity over the last five years remains well below that seen in the early 1980Æs. Expenditure on coal exploration shows a similar trend with strong growth from a low base over the last five years, reaching over $11 M in 2006. Total coal production in 2006 was 5.9 Mt, an increase of 10% on 2005 with imports from Indonesia adding a further $1.1 Mt.   Newmont and Oceana Gold are by far the largest public gold mining companies operating in New Zealand, although only Oceana Gold maintains a presence on the local stock exchange. Other metals explorers with New Zealand projects include a range of public-listed Juniors (market capitalisation less than NZ$50m) domiciled largely in New Zealand, Australia and/or Canada. Capital-raising on public markets directed towards New Zealand exploration is estimated at around NZ$12 M for 2006, the bulk of this coming via Glass EarthÆs NZ$10 M IPO on the NZAX in October.   The New Zealand Coal sector is dominated by the state-owned enterprise Solid Energy with around 80% market share by production. Other domestic coal competition remains limited, and includes the L&M Group, Pike River Coal, Eastern Corporation, and New Vale (acquired by Solid Energy in 2007). Pricing parity comes mainly from imported coal and global thermal coal prices have remained strong during 2006 at around US$45-55/t, driven by continued expansion in Chinese demand. Coking coal prices have eased 16% since 2005 to around US$98/t in 2007.   Although recent increases in exploration spending suggest a renaissance in the New Zealand minerals sector, long-run trends indicate that we have simply rebounded from a low base over the last five years and much work is still to be done to stimulate further growth in the mining industry to maintain minerals production at current levels. Key industry challenges include marketing exploration opportunities to local and overseas investors, building a critical mass of NZX-listed explorers and providing an internationally competitive environment to attract further capital and expertise.

It is indeed a rarity for a non-engineer, let alone a lawyer, to even be considered for a mining-related award, especially where that award is for significant contributions to technical progress in the mining and exploration sectors. So, when I was notified that I had received this award, I struggled for a topic that would meld the legal world that I operate in with the engineering driven world of exploration and extraction. The most exciting part of my job has always been the opportunity to absorb the technical details of the cases I work on and, in effect, translate them for a lay audience. Too often, I have found, lawyers, judges, legislators and yes, even regulators who lack a technical background simply give up trying to understand the details of the very conditions or processes that they are trying to describe and simply repeat phrases told to them by their client or by a retained expert.

The southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain, a geomorphological element formed since late Tertiary times, contains commercially exploitable accumulations of ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite associated with a series of raised shorelines. The location of the deposits is controlled by a locally outcropping Archaen granite/ granulite complex and a sea current pattern determined by local geography and a prevailing wind direction. A progression from medium to high titanium ilmenite is evident parallelled by progressive leucoxenisation as the age of the deposits increases. Variations in trace element content accompany this process. Circulating groundwater has caused vertical mineralogical variations within individual deposits and by precipitation of iron has formed layers of hardpan.The Geographe Bay deposits are of important economic significance.INTRODUCTIONObservations made during the course of a brief survey of the southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain provide an outline of the geology and mineralogy of the mineral sand deposits of the area. This preliminary study will require considerable modification in the light of more detailed work in the future.REGIONAL GEOLOGYThe Geographe Bay area is situated in the south-west corner of Western Australia between longitudes 115° O'W. and 116° O'W. and latitudes 33° 15'S. and 33° 45'S.The general geology of the area is shown in Fig. 1 where the control of the physiography exercised by the Cape Leeuwin-Cape Naturaliste basement ridge is readily apparent. Between this ridge and the Precambrian east of the Darling fault lies the southern part of the Perth basin which contains outcropping Jurassic to Recent sediments and lavas (McWhae, et al., 1958).The Leeuwin-Naturaliste ridge is the exposed portion of L Assistant Production Managcr. According to OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910.119 (Process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals), Canadian Provincial Safety Standard Acts or Federal laws, the owner of stationary equipment (Boilers, stacks, piping, pressure vessel, etc.) should follow a complete inspection plan and follow an Integrity Operating Windows (IOW’s) adapted for each of them. Some important variables shall be included in the inspection plan such as specific damage mechanisms versus alloy used in the original design, process conditions, etc. Some North American’s standards exist, like the one listed in ASME PTB-2-2009, to help owner to create such inspection program. The new API RP 584, Integrity Operating Windows (IOW’s) can guide Mining & Metals owners to find out their specific IOW’s. Inspection frequencies are often described in the Jurisdiction Safety Acts such as the British Columbia B.C. Reg. 104/2004, etc. but often left in the owner representative responsibility (Bill C-21, federal Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act). Every deficiency should be repaired according to recognized Codes such as ASME PCC-2, etc.. If flaws not conforming to the original Code of construction are found, this article will introduce the Fitness-For- Service assessment principles to be able to accept it without any repairs.

Requirements for minerals are on the increase globally and the deep sea offers a potential source of essential materials. Extracting these minerals from what is considered an environmentally sensitive area, and one about which little is still known, is a challenging activity, which needs careful consideration and an appropriate environmental impact assessment to be carried out. Extraction of material from the deep sea beds can cause disturbance or damage to benthic communities; impact on mobile marine species such as fish, mammals and reptiles; cause increases in suspended sediment and sediment deposition onto potentially sensitive areas or potentially release contaminants which were previously bound to the sediment. This paper discusses the potential environmental issues surrounding extraction of deep-sea deposits using aggregate dredging techniques and how those issues can be appropriately assessed. In particular issues of suspended sediments, plume transport, water and sediment quality and underwater noise impacts on potentially sensitive species and habitats will be explored.

X-ray diffraction and differential thermal methods were used to determine the mineralogy of some clays used by the heavy clay industry in the Adelaide area. A detailed analysis was made of the mineralogy and particle size distribution of eighteen samples from beds in two pits in the Recent sediments in the Adelaide plains, of six white clays developed from the weathering of the Adelaide series of sediments, and of four Recent alluvial clays from a pit in the Mount Lofty ranges south of Adelaide. Structural clay products in the Adelaide area are manufactured from mixtures of these clays, so the mineralogy and particle size distribution was determined of eighteen clay mixtures used to make red bricks, cream bricks, facing bricks, pipes and tiles.Knowledge of this mineralogy is important in understanding the ceramic behaviour of the clays.INTRODUCTIONIn this investigation an account is given of the clay mineralogy and particle size distribution of some ceramic clays from the Adelaide area. The clays are used in the manufacture of structura,l clay products and the results to 'be described are part of an overall 'plan of study covering the heavy industrial clays and shales of Australia. Previous work has been published (Cole and Carthew, 1953; Ferguson, 1954; Ferguson and Hosking, 1955; Cole and Nielsen, 1958/59).In this work no attempt has been made to examine clays from all pits engaged in supplying materials for the structural clay industry. Leaching experiments were carried out on a spent catalyst sample with a honeycomb structure, containing 47.5% Ti, 5.8% Mo, 2.7% Si, 2 035 ppm As, 52 ppm Pb and 8.8 ppm Hg. More than 93% of the Mo and As was removed by direct alkaline leaching after grinding to 80% -36 micrometres. The residue contained 0.3% Mo and 60 ppm As. To obtain a TiO2 matrix with 30 ppm As, acid leaching at controlled pH with 90 kg/t Al scrap was followed by oxidising alkaline leaching. Treatment of the direct alkaline leach solution or of the mixed solutions from the two-stage process involved two successive operations: purification by neutralisation with Al(OH)3 addition to raise the Al concentration to 4 g/l, and ion exchange on Amberlite IRA 94 S resin. Whatever the type of solution treated, elution with 200 g/l NH4OH solution gave an eluate of very high purity containing 164 g/l Mo, less than 70 mg/l V and less than 2 mg/l As

Physical testing of rock support for rockbursting conditions has been carried out for over 40 years. A review of this testing shows that it has been mostly component?based, rather than actually testing support systems. Further, it is concluded that none of the testing is truly representative of rockburst loading in a similitude sense. Similitude conditions are not achievable, mainly because the real conditions in a rockburst event, such as seismic source location and magnitude, wave frequencies, amplitudes, and interactions, are not all known. Because such information is not available, and because the results of all testing carried out to date have not been able to define, for support design purposes, the capacity of support systems, ongoing physical testing of rockburst support systems is essential. It is essential that the test should simulate, or actually take place in, a supported rock excavation. A rock support system is a combination of individual support components that work together to retain and contain the rock. In doing this, the components are subjected to loading by the rock and to interactive loading between one component and another. It is necessary to prove the capacity of such rockburst support systems by subjecting them to severe loading, as in direct blasting. The direct blasting approach, pioneered more than 40 years ago, probably still provides the greatest validity as a significant test of rockburst support capabilities, even though it does not simulate a rockburst. Direct blast testing of rockburst support systems in a surface environment, such as in a quarry or on exposed rock cutting surfaces, could represent a practical development of the approach, facilitating the execution and monitoring of tests.

Carbothermal reduction of manganese oxides and manganese ores in the solid state was studied in hydrogen, helium and argon at different temperatures, ore compositions and carbon to manganese oxide ratios. Wesselsore (South Africa) and two grades of the Groote Eylandt ore (Australia) with different level of impurities were examined. Ores were characterised by XRD, X-ray fluorescence, optical microscopy and scanning electronmicroscopy. Isothermal and temperature programmed carbothermal reduction experiments were conducted in a fixed bed reactor in a vertical tube furnace, with on-line monitoring of gas composition by the CO-CO2 infrared sensor. The reduced samples were characterised by XRD, SEM and LECO analyses. Extent of reduction was calculated using data on the off-gas composition, and LECO carbon and oxygen contents in the reduced sample. Manganese oxides in the ore were reduced to a-Mn and carbides Mn23C6 and Mn7C3 depending on the carbon to ore ratio.
