Wireless sensor networks and wireless communication systems have become indispensable in underground mines. Wireless sensor networks are being used for better real-time data acquisition from ground monitoring devices, gas sensors, and mining equipment, whereas wireless communication systems are needed for locating and communicating with workers. Conventional methods like wireline communication have proved to be ineffective in the event of mine hazards such as roof falls, fires etc. Before implementation of any wireless system, the variable path loss indices for different workplaces should be determined. This helps in better signal reception and sensor node localization, and also improves the method by which miners carrying the wireless devices are tracked. This paper proposes a novel method for determining the parameters of a suitable radio propagation model, which is illustrated with the results of a practical experiment carried out in an underground coal mine in southern India. The path loss indices, along with other essential parameters for accurate localization, have been determined using the XBee modules and ZigBee protocol at 2.4 GHz frequency.

"The Laronde mill has been in operation since 1988. Actual milling rate ranges from 7,000 to 8,500 mtpd. Laronde uses SAG/ball mill grinding followed by copper and zinc flotation circuits. A cyanidation/Merrill-Crowe process recovers the remaining gold and silver in the flotation tails.In 1999, the carbon in pulp circuit was replaced by a Merrill-Crowe circuit in order to cope with a much higher ratio of silver/gold associated with the discovery of the Penna shaft. Marine type diatomaceous earth was used as filter aid in both clarifier pressure leaf filters and recessed pressure filter presses from 1999 to 2005. In 2005, this filter aid was gradually replaced by alpha-cellulose after several laboratory and plant filtration trials. The selected cellulose is considered to be much less sensitive to parameters such as pH and reagent concentration and have increased clarifier and filter press filtration performance. Also, since cellulose is exothermic, replacing diatomaceous earth with cellulose as filter aid in the filter presses has increased calcining and oxidation rates in the calcining ovens since cellulose is exothermic. Finally, better calcining conditions have resulted in energy and reagent savings at the arc furnaces.This paper describes how the filter aid replacement has contributed to increasing productivity and Net Smelter Return of the refinery while reducing worker’s hazards and operating cost.INTRODUCTIONAll Merrill-Crowe circuits in the world are operated with filter aids. For years, the market for precoat filter aid has been dominated by mineral filter aids such as diatomite and perlite. Flowsheet and equipment selection at the Laronde refinery were performed in the late nineties. At that time, some key parameters of the design criteria had clearly identified marine type diatomaceous earth (DE) as the most successful filter aid. Parameters such as reagent cost and availability, clarity of the filtrate solution and good historical filtration performance in other concentrators had designated DE as the best suited filter aid. Pregnant solution processed in the refinery from its start-up through 2001 was fairly stable in flow rate and reasonable in terms of impurity content (cationic and anionic compounds)."

Sufficient time has elapsed since the enactment of the amendments to the mining legislation in 1981 to enable an examination to be made of the way in which the licensing system operates in practice. One of the most important decisions in resource management in New Zealand is whether or not rights of access to the resource should be conferred by the Crown upon an appropriate private sector participant. The licensing system is the means for allocating these rights of access. The manner in which the licensing system is administered, therefore, is crucial to natural resource management in New Zealand. What is the mining licensing system in New Zealand designed to achieve? This simple question admits of no easy answer. Is it the identification and development of the mineral resources of New Zealand? Are these objectives tempered by issues of resource conservation and environmental protection? Is a balance to be achieved among these competing factors? Does the legislation contain any priorities? Does the system respond in an ad hoc manner to particular facts and circumstances or does it operate within a more predictable framework? To what extent are decisions made on access to minerals with reference to the development or conservation of other resources? These questions may be summarised in the title to this paper which poses the question whether mining licences are instruments for resource management.

A simple process for making filter aids from coal by controlled carbonization at 800-1200·C is described.Several possible variations in reactor design have been used experimentally, involving fluidized beds of carbon or inert material, reaction of the particles while entrained in air, and a combination of entrainment and fluidization.Product yields depend upon the composition of the parent coal but are always less than the sum of the ash and fixed carbon values determined by the proximate analysis. The product yield also depends on the air-to-coal ratio, which affects the amount of coal substance burned and the temperature attained. Particle residence time and reactor temperature affect the degree of devolatilization of the product and hence its wettability. The filtration behaviour of carbonaceous filter aids is greatly influenced by the size distribution, shape and physical properties of the particles-parameters which are largely determined by fue type and particle sizing of the coal used.Carbonaceous filter aids are distinctly different from other types commonly used and extensive industrial applications are anticipated in a wide range of industries ranging from food to mineral processing.

Ongoing development work on ultra-fine grinding for various applications at the Group?s concentrators has been conducted by Anglo Platinum over the last few years. Current potential applications for mainstream grinding and concentrate grinding are the subject of a group-wide research and development programme. The first 10 000-litre 2.6 MW IsaMill was jointly developed by Anglo Platinum, Xstrata Technology and Netszch for installation at the Western Limb Tailings Re-treatment project in Rustenburg, South Africa. The unit was commissioned in late 2003/early 2004,and has operated in an intermediate concentrate regrind application successfully since. This paper describes the operational performance to date, as compared with the original duty specifications and objectives. The first mainstream M10 000 IsaMill with a 3 MW drive will be operational in November 2006 at the Potgietersrus Platinum (PPL) ?Platreef? Sandsloot Concentrator in South Africa?s Limpopo Province. Paper presented at the UK minerals industry conference and published in: Minerals extraction towards the millennium. UK minerals industry conference, 3-5 April 1995, University of Leeds. London: Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, 1995. The various types of risks that arise in minerals industry projects are usually financial, technical, or environmental, and the key to valid risk analysis is complete integration of all risks, both within and between categories. Geographical information systems (GIS) and geostatistical simulation methods can provide a means of integrating data and conducting realistic risk analyses. Risk can be quantified but there are limitations to numerical approaches to risk assessment. Realistic quantification requires adequate models of the processes that give rise to risk. Risk perception must also be taken into account when conducting risk assessment and reporting the results, especially in public forums. The modelling and visualisation capabilities of a combined GIS/simulation system can provide the means of dealing with perception in risk analysis

Decision-making regarding plant-scale reagent dosage regimes and air rates is a topic of ongoing investigation and high importance. The current work explains some techniques that have proven useful in deciding on plant-scale flotation operating regimes. Specific focus has been placed on the reagents: frother and depressant, as well as some discussion around the control of air rate and froth depth. Air rate has been selected based on its effects on the froth phase. Froth velocity and froth height above the cell lip are the two variables measured and used to select the operating air rate. Pulp level is then adjusted to increase or decrease mass pull. A technique has been developed using the Anglo Platinum Bubble Sizer on an industrial flotation cell to determine the relationship between bubble size and frother concentration. This technique has been extended to measure the equivalent frother concentration or frothabilities of various streams on a rougher bank. A mass balance for frother was performed successfully, and this provided a better understanding of the way frother moved in the rougher bank. With this knowledge, more informed decisions can be made about frother addition required in subsequent flotation stages. For depressant, a new protocol for deciding on dosage rate has been developed. The depressant dosage should be based on the amount of fresh feed material reporting to a bank. Currently 400 g per ton of fresh feed has been assumed a reasonable starting point, with promising results. Improved froth stability and grades were observed. There is scope for more accurately defining the optimal dosage rate. Importantly, the combined effect of changing the chemistry and the hydrodynamics together has been demonstrated. A significant upward shift in the grade-recovery relationship for a cleaner bank was observed.

The mining industry has come to rely on imaging devices to monitor and record all kinds of activities. We use them to measure, improve the process, ensure security, increase production and automate machinery. Cameras can be installed in locations most people wouldn?t want to live and be our ?eyes? to record the events at that location. This paper discusses digital imaging, the equipment, methods, techniques and information that can be learned from digital devices used in mining operations. The guy who said ?a picture is worth a thousand words? probably understated it. Images are the perfect way to document conditions before, after and even during mining activities. Today?s wide choice of cameras, camcorders and other digital devices allow us to record most activities and events. The technology is advancing at a high rate. Digital cameras and camcorders are marvels of technology with high resolution optics, compact size, automatic time and date stamp, great battery life, shutters to freeze motion and computers to auto focus and eliminate jitter (image stabilization). Add to this the economical price and ease of use and everyone in this industry should be aware of the possibilities.

Success of the Gold Line Eastside Ex-tension rail tunnels in Los Angeles, CA has prompted the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s (Metro) planning new rail lines to include underground alternatives. The Westside Extension Transit Corridor alternatives include up to 27 km (17 miles) of subway to be constructed in soft ground. The routes will require construction in Los Angeles? ?potential methane zone,? which was not considered for subway construction until recently. Slurry face tunnel boring machines (TBM) will likely be specified.

The effect of ultrasonic energy transmitted through a liquid on chrysotile asbestos was investigated. Ultrasonic energy was effective in fiberization of chrysotile crudes as well as standard grades of milled asbestos fibers. Treated samples of several grades of milled fibers had increased wet bulk volumes and decreased settling and filtration rates compared to untreated fibers. Ultrasonics may be a method for fiberization of chrysotile without decreasing length or use of chemical additives that alter surface properties. Cavitation of the liquid on the surface of fiber bundles is believed to be the cause of the fiberization. It was found that ultrasonic energy greatly increased the rate of precipitation of latex on asbestos. When chrysotile asbestos fibers require additional opening or fiberization, the usual method employed is some type of high speed impact or grinding to open the fibers and produce a larger surface area. These methods always cause some degradation in length due to breaking of fibers. In addition, the efficiency of mechanical methods decreases as the diameter of fiber bundles decreases. Chemical methods have been proposed and it is claimed that fiberization down to individual fibers of 200-300 A diam is possible with some wetting agents. However, large amounts of reagent are required, approximately EDWARD MARTINEZ is with Central Research Laboratories, American Smelting and Refining Co., South Plain-field, N.J. TP 63H226. Discussion of this paper, submitted in duplicate prior to Mar. 15, 1964, will appear in SME Transactions, September 1964, and AIME Transactions, 1964, vol. 229. 50 pct of the weight of fiber treated, and some of the wetting agent remains on the surface of the chrysotile and cannot be removed by any solvent which does not destroy the asbestos.' This investigation was directed at determining whether ultrasonic energy transmitted through a liquid would be effective in fiberizing chrysotile asbestos. Samples of asbestos crudes and commercially milled fibers were treated; settling and filtration rates of treated and untreated milled fibers were obtained. EQUIPMENT A Westinghouse Corp. ultrasonic cleaning system WEHH was used in this investigation. See Table I for a breakdown of this ultrasonic unit. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Fiberization of Chrysotile Crudes: Samples of chrysotile crudes were pulled apart with tweezers so that coarse bundles of fiber approximately 1/16 in. in diam were obtained. The bundles were put into a bottle with 200 ml of methanol and the mixture placed into the ultrasonic tank for 30 min at a power output of 1200 w. The test was repeated using water instead of methanol. During the irradiation it was noted that the surfaces of the bundles were being fiberized. The liquid eventually became cloudy with dispersed solids. Fig. 1 is an electron micrograph of the fibers, some reduced to unit dimensions, and a fine material released by the ultrasonic energy. The platy particles in Fig. 1 were identified by electron diffraction and differential thermal analysis as brucite, Mg(OH)2, which must have been intergrown in the chrysotile crudes. Electron micrographs of bulk specimens of chrysotile have shown a fine material filling the interstices between tubular fibers.2,3 Electron diffraction patterns of the fine material collected after ultrasonic treatment indicate that it is amorphous. After decanting the solution, bundles of chrysotile remained somewhat decreased in diameter. Continuing the ultrasonic irradiation of the remaining material resulted in additional fiberization. The opening of the fibers occurred in both methanol and water. Cavitation of the liquid by the ultrasonic energy is undoubtedly responsible for the fiberization. This paper reviews progress in equipment design and in the techniques applied to mine lighting in Great Britain. The incidence of the disease miner's nystagmus, which was a major source of concern only a few years ago, has now diminished, largely owing to improvements in standards of lighting in mines. The reorganisation of the coal mining industry, involving increasing mech-anisation, together with new safety legislation, has brought about the widespread use of mains electric lighting underground. An account is given of some of the results of research to determine the lighting conditions needed for compliance with the compulsory legal requirement of "sufficient and suitable" general lighting at specific localities in British mines. Some details are given of the techniques applied and the results of recent research in the problem of glare from miners' cap lamps. Of the various factors in the working environment of the miner, it is true to say that lighting is seldom given attention comparable with that devoted to other factors, such as dust, heat and humidity, or atmospheric gas content. No doubt one reason for this lies in the ability of the human eye to adapt itself to low brightness levels. Be that as it may, the fact is that at the turn of the 20th century the miner's working light improved little throughout the centuries during which mining technology has developed. Indeed, in coal mines which encounter a methane explosion hazard, flame safety lamps, with a luminous intensity less than one candle power, were virtually the sole means of lighting during almost the whole of the 19th century. The 20th century has witnessed a substantial improvement in lighting techniques underground in coal and metalliferous mining. In Great Britain the general pattern has been one of standards periodically raised by the implementation of Statutory Regulations imposed under successive hlines Acts, but it is fair to add that the more progressive mining companies usually anticipated the Statutory Regulations, which when they have been put into effect have served to turn into general practice what was already being done at the better mines. In earlier years, official requirements were limited to the specification of approved lamp designs, with stipulated minimum values of luminous intensity and light output, but more recently the necessity of satisfactory maintenance of standards during service has been recognized, and the current regulations not only require that a maintenance organisation should exist, but also specify a maximum permissible depreciation below initial approval standards.'

This paper describes a simple finite element (FE) modelling approach which leads to the computation of seismic energy release rate (ERR) and strain energy storage rate (ESR) which result from mining. The concept of critical strain energy is introduced as a means to help evaluate the strainburst potential in mine structures. A new, energy-based, burst potential index (BPI) is proposed. The use of ERR, ESR and BPI is demonstrated by a cut-and-fill stope case study. The merits of using such energy parameters in the interpretation and analysis of strainburst phenomena are discussed. While the study gives promising results, site-specific back analyses would be required to first calibrate the model and fit it with the local mine conditions, before it can be adopted as a routine design tool.

A Cu-conducting solid electrolyte was used to develop the sensor. Instead of measuring the potential across the electrolyte from the reference material to the Cu-containing phase, a potential was applied and the stable current measured. This gave reasonable readings for copper-tin alloys, which agreed with the theoretical calculations, but was less satisfactory in the case of mattes because the surface area of electrolyte presented to the matte phase varied from sensor to sensor. To overcome this problem the potential was applied, the current was measured and then reversed and remeasured and the ratio of the currents was calculated. The current ratio is shown to be independent of the resistance of the electrolyte and the surface area of the electrolyte offered to the melt, but strongly dependent on the activity of the copper

In this address I look back over the past 40 years of mineral exploration in New Zealand û essentially the period since the Second World War (ie since 1945). It was the period of my personal involvement, and indeed of the personal involvement of a number of you. Luckily it was aperiod of great interest and activity. In the previous 50 years, virtually nothing had happened, and it is kindest to draw a veil over that period. In the very important earlier 40 years (1855 - 1895) the New Zealand gold rush occurred. That must have been a fascinating, rewarding period, which has been thoroughly documented by better historians than myself. I will simply comment firstly that its mineral explorers (gold-prospectors) were very successful indeed, and found most localities of the minerals they sought, in spite of using very different methods from ours of today. Secondly, they were preceeded by one of Maori exploration, which searched for a much restricted list of minerals, but succeeded in finding virtually every locality we know of today. The explorers of both of these early periods were obviously highly successful, but, in the time available, I must restrict myself to the period since 1945. I am currently editing the effective up-dating of Gordon WilliamsÆ 'Economic Geology of New Zealand' (1974). It covers the last 12 years or so. Many of you are contributing to that volume û both as authors and as referees û and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all. Although this new volume excludes the energy field, many of us have been involved in it, and I am therefore including energy minerals in this review, as Williams did in 1974.

When one looks back and does assessments of what has been the key ingredient in achieving success in our safety efforts, there are many issues that spring to mind and cover a wide array of elements. One does not know which has the ultimate maximum effect. In his presentation yesterday, Alan Peers, our SHEQ leader, covered a lot of detail with the way we are managing safety at Modikwa. I have attempted to identify some of the key essentials in making the mine safe. Passion Safety is addressed with a passion that is unbelievable at times. When I get phoned because an incident has occurred and in reporting the incident, there are already action plans being put in place to prevent re-occurrences, you understand the commitment to put employees? safety first. You hear the disappointment in your subordinates? voices when they have to share the fact that an incident or accident has occurred.

Electromagnetic wire rope testing is the only practical non-destructive method to evaluate the current condition of wire ropes in general, and in the mining industry in particular. The method has been successfully used worldwide for decades. In mining it has considerably improved the safety of operations. Yet, problems persist. In particular both the Loss-of-Metallic-Area (LMA) readings, as well as the Local Fault (LF) readings, as obtained by different instrument operators, were found to be unacceptably diverse. Consequently, large sums have been spent internationally, as well as in Canada, comparing a whole range of these instruments in an effort to rate their performance. The published results clearly confirmed operational experience, namely that the LMA and LF readings were, indeed, unacceptably diverse. Excellent pertinent conclusions were also published. In Canada the authors? conclusion was that while the divergence in the LF signal based results could, possibly, be attributed to both hardware and human-error related factors, the LMA signal related quantitative uncertainties were human-error related. Consequently, much attention was paid in Canada to developing novel control methods, namely computerized ones to replace the more error-prone analogue ones. In addition new sensor-heads were developed, both for portable as well as for permanent installation with remote control operations. While these efforts were of considerable benefit, the situation must again be carefully reviewed with very special reference to deep-level mining, now of immediate concern in Canada as well. In this paper the authors supply an overview of the results obtained by three of the four major international projects referred to previously. Relevant conclusions/comments are also restated. Moreover, specific recommendations are put forward as to how current problems might best be remedied.

This paper presents part of the outcomes of the drill and blast optimization project carried out at Kisladag Gold Mine in Turkey. Kisladag Gold Mine is the largest gold mine in Turkey with a low-grade, bulk-tonnage, open pit operation that uses heap leaching for gold recovery. After blasting, the ore is fed to a three-stage crushing circuit which prepares crushed ore approximately -10 mm (0.39 in) for heap leaching. Crusher downtime analysis showed that blocky material and insufficient feed are causing significant downtimes with the primary crusher. This was supported by the fragmentation data collected to date. It was decided to initiate a fragmentation project to understand the variation in the run-of-mine (ROM) size with a view to provide a consistent feed to the crushing circuit. The study includes the analyses of the ore strength and structure, image analysis of the fragmentation pictures acquired from blasts, blast auditing and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) analyses. During this project, over 200 fragmentation pictures were acquired from 47 blasts to optimize ore and waste blasts. Ore strength varies between 30 and 120 MPa and rock quality designation (RQD) ranges between 30 and 100. A site-specific fragmentation model was used to calibrate the fragmentation for blast domains formed. In addition, alternative cases were simulated to achieve blasts designs with consistent ROM fragmentation size distribution. Alternative blast designs that include stemming length and powder factor changes were suggested. Long stemming length, drill cuttings use, free faced blasts, small shot sizes and poor stemming length control were some of the key issues causing coarse fragmentation.

Today, mine backfilling has become an integral part of mining operations, both from a local and overall ground control point of view, and as regards mining techniques and environmental considerations. During the past decade, substantial research has been carried out to contribute to the better understanding of the mechanisms involved in mine backfill behaviour. This work involved analytical, experimental and numerical studies at different scales. Accordingly, this work has been aimed at developing backfill design guidelines for actual working conditions. Backfill design for deep mining conditions is complex and requires understanding of various elements. The most important of these elements are: backfill inherent strength parameters, backfill placement method, stope geometry and interaction between backfill and host rock. The mobilization of backfill strength parameters controls the backfill behaviour and thus, its failure mode. It is believed that the governing boundary conditions and backfill-rock interaction influence the backfill strength mobilization significantly. Accordingly, the interaction between backfill and host rock is an influential factor in overall backfill behaviour under applied loads. The focus of this research is to investigate the backfill-rock interaction, considering a nonlinear behaviour for both backfill and rock mass. Assuming typical stope geometry, the FLAC code was used to model the complex boundary condition associated with narrow vein mining conditions and to simulate the backfill behaviour. A comprehensive numerical study was conducted and the results obtained were compared against field observations. The analysis of findings provides qualitative results, which can be used for backfill design.
