An analysis of coal slurry pipelines was presented in our May 1976 study, Route Specific Cost Comparisons: Unit Trains, Coal Slurry Pipelines and Extra High Voltage Transmission (4]. The present study extends that analysis. The earlier work included technical and economic cost descriptions of the black Mesa and ETSI pipelines as well as some hypothetical pipeline routes. Water problems, safety and environment, required resources, and labor impacts were discussed at some length. Additionally, pipeline impacts on competing railroads, slurry-rail comparisons, and cost escalation. were analyzed. The difference in pipeline profitability to an owner-operator versus a promoter-builder was suggested. These aspects are not redone in this study. Here, we present a synopsis of the previous results and a general statement of coal slurry pipelines. Extensions of the arguments are presented where they appear warranted. New material is developed in the area of pipeline branching and tapping. This would appear necessary if slurry pipelines are to function as more than private lines; if they are, for example, to be responsive to common carrier requirements.

This work, conducted under Bureau of Mines contract, deals with the development of a computer graphics software package that will: 1. display mine ventilation schematics and other representative Illustrations for a real-time data acquisition system under development by the Bureau, and, 2. utilize the Bureau-owned Minefire and Ventilation Code for display of ventilation on and contamination predictions. The software package has been written try operate on a 64K, Z-80 based microprocessor-computer. The project has been divided into two phases. The first phase dealt with the development of the graphics software The sec rind phase dealt with the retrofit of the Minefire and Ventilation Code to the Z-80 microprocessor-computer.

Magnesium and its alloys have long been characterized as possessing limited capacity for mechanical forming at atmospheric temperatures prior to rupturing despite their outstanding performances in this respect at elevated temperatures. Responsible for this behavior are the fundamental facts that these hexagonal-type metals have comparatively few slip elements at low temperatures for any extensive deformation and that, at high temperatures, additional slip elements become operative, thus enhancing greater plasticity under strain. The transitionai point has been set at 2 25°C by Schmidl for single crystals, and at 250°C by Morel1 and Hanawalt² for extruded magnesium metal. In a recent X-ray investigation on poly-crystalline magnesium-alloy sheets, Barrett and Haller3 have revealed that, below the transitional tempelature, the initial plastic deformation proceeds mostly by a twinning action; that, above such a temperature, the action is mostly by slip. The deep-drawing performance of the magnesium + 1.5 pct alloy sheet† over a wide range of temperatures has been investigated by Weber and Vanden Berg,' and their results are presented in Fig I. It should be noted from this work that a maximum drawability of about 25 pct at room temperature has been obtained on this alloy under the conventional deep-drawing operations. For the same alloy, it is now possible to augment the cold drawability to about 40 pct by a process to be disclosed. Hitherto, this value has been obtained only by deep-drawing the alloy at around 230°C. That greater plastic flow is attainable at atmospheric temperatures on magnesium under certain deformational techniques was discovered by the authors6 in their analyses of plastic-deformational behaviors of pure magnesium. This fact is best illustrated in Fig 2 from the Har-greaves analysis6 performed by the authors under two different modes of loading. For direct test, a separate unstrained specimen was used for each load duration, whereas for the integrated test the same specimen was employed for all the five intermittent loadings so that the load duration was made additive throughout the investigation. The higher plastic flow-rate at room temperature, as designated by the Har-greaves constant S, was obtained by the integrated or intermittent loading procedure. In the Piedmont, heavily loaded structures are generally supported by either drilled piers or one of several pile types. The choice of drilled piers or piles is typically one of comparative costs. The cost of a drilled pier foundation is usually the more difficult to predict because of the greater impact that variable conditions and construction monitoring have on cost. Poor specifications, related to the drilling equipment, procedures and bearing level, can also result in large cost extras. In the southern Piedmont, straight shafts are typically extended down to hard rock to achieve primary support in end-bearing: when bells are required, they are often constructed manually. In some eastern and northern Piedmont locations the thickness of the decompossed rock zone is significant and considerable skin friction can be mobilized. Typically piers are constructed in holes temporarily cased with steel liners. The bottom is cleaned of loose material and water, and then evaluated by a geotechnical engineer to confirm the design bearing pressure (and friction, where appropriate) or recommend alternative construction measures.

This report contains a summary of designs, specifications, costs, and schedules developed for a prototype oil-shale demonstration mining program to be undertaken at the Horse Draw site in the Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The objective of the demonstration program is to assess the feasibility of extracting oil shale and associated saline minerals from deep, rich oil shale zones which occur within the central portion of the Basin. Four mining systems were specified for demonstration. These include (1) chamber and pillar mining with backfill; (2) sublevel stoping with backfill; (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence; and (4) block caving. Commercial-scale designs for each system were modified and scaled down as required to achieve program objectives. The demonstration mine layout and design includes specifications for ore handling, backfilling, ventilation, dewatering, maintenance, and supply systems. A feature of particular interest in the design is the combination of block caving and sublevel stoping methods into a single unit for demonstration of subsidence mining systems in deep oil shale deposits. The report also contains a detailed breakdown of projected capital and operating costs for the demonstration mining program.

In this study, solvent extraction of zirconium by using triphenylphosphine oxide as extractant has been investigated. The results showed that extraction of zirconium by triphenylphosphine oxides in nitric acid and hydrochloric acid media were negligible. Extraction of zirconium in acetic acid media with concentration of 0.01~0.2 M has been studied and the results showed that the maximum percent of zirconium extraction was 40% in acid acetic with concentration of 0.01 M. By addition complexing agents such as potassium thiocyanate with the concentration of 0.01~0.2 M zirconium extraction increased up to 86% in 0.2 M potassium thiocyanate. By addition of sodium salicylate with concentration of 0.01 M and in pH=2.5, the maximum extraction of 96% was achieved. The striping of zirconium from organic phase can be carried out by 0.5 M solution of sulfuric acid.

Highland Valley Copper (HVC) is a large open pit copper mine in the southern interior of British Columbia. Machine guidance technology using GPS has been utilized at the mine since 1996 for blast hole drill navigation and since 2000 for shovel and dozer navigation. Since 1997, rock recognition has been part of the drilling process. This allowed the mine to develop a Mine to Mill strategy using the rock hardness information from drill monitoring systems to both refine drilling and blasting parameters as well as downstream crushing and grinding strategies. Although this preliminary effort has been very successful at HVC, the current intent is to gain further benefits through better use of existing information while also deriving an enhanced data set from monitoring production drills. In the latter case, the objective is to acquire and process drill variables in such a manner as to permit more detailed definition of rock mass characteristics. The subsequent focus will be to use the derived geotechnical and geological information as part of a practical process to more prescriptively blast the rock mass. Through the definition of domains based on drill monitored derived rock mass properties, the intent will be to enhance blast outcomes that lead to optimized downstream (from blasting through to concentration) processes in a more proactive and timely manner. This paper examines a proposed approach to be able to derive more accurate and consistent rock mass properties from production drilling. In addition, the discussion will identify potential benefits to be gained from process improvements that result in enhanced productivities, and crushing and grinding optimisation due to blasting strategies that are more closely matched to identify rock mass characteristics.

I once read an æarticleÆ in FHM Magazine entitled æThe Coolest Jobs There Ever WasÆ. It was about a group of guys who were pursuing careers that any person on the planet would just kill for. I distinctly remember drooling over the pages, thinking how much I would love to be Michael SchumacherÆs Chief Engineer at Ferrari, or the Principal Designer and Tester for one of the big Dutch rollercoaster companies. From that moment on, I decided that I wanted a career that was cool enough to make it into the pages of that article. Throughout my time at university, I always had that article in the back of my mind. As a result I constantly wondered about what sort of job I could end up with once I left university. More importantly, I wondered if FHM would be banging down my door to put me in the magazine! After a long and stressful job hunting process (in between completing a thesis and studying for exams) I finally managed to land myself a job with Orica Mining Services. I can honestly say I didnÆt know what to expect when I first joined Orica. Most of my friends ended up working for big mining companies, while I was offered a position with one of the biggest suppliers to these mining companies. However, I had a feeling when I was discussing the role with my future supervisor during the interview process that the job was going to be awesome. I have now spent a year working for Orica and I absolutely love it! While I feel that my job is worthy of being in that FHM article, unfortunately, I donÆt think I am going to get my opportunity to be in the magazine. Apparently I donÆt look too good in a bikini! However, I would love to have the opportunity to discuss the journey that I have taken so far û from my time as an environmental science graduate, then moving on to mining engineering, to now, being part of the Orica Mining Services Graduate Program. My suggestion is to use this paper as a resource. I have learnt during my time at university, as well as my time in the workforce, that the best people you can learn from are your peers. Take what you feel is relevant from the paper; hopefully it will help guide you in shaping your own career.

The results of initial work indicate that for 3 of the 5 quarry sands bioleaching reduces the iron oxide content to a commercially acceptable 0.035 wt% Fe20 3, although the time taken to achieve this is 14-22 days against a target leach time of 7 day. Subsequent work has identified strains of Aspergillus niger that are more efficient at producing the array of complexing agents for iron and is yielding excellent and rapid reductions in Fe levels. Potentially, bioleaching offers a more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient process for the removal of Fe from glass-making sands than conventional routes but the production of organic acids by fermentation must be achievable with low-cost substrates such as sugar-beet molasses and lactose permeates for bioleaching to offer a commercially viable alternative to treatment with hot mineral acids. Silica sands usually contain three groups of Fe minerals: iron oxyhydroxides, which comprise crystalline types such as goethite and limonite tending to occur as thin, discontinuous coatings and in cracks and crevices on the surface of the quartz; the assemblage of heavy trace minerals, which include ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, chromite and haematite, commonly present at levels of 0.1 wt% or less as discrete grains or sometimes cemented to the quartz; and clay minerals cemented in pits on the surface of the quartz and in association with weathered, discrete feldspars. The response of the assemblage of iron minerals to short periods of exposure to hot inorganic acids is broadly related to which group they belong to, those that form coatings being accessible to acid and tending to react rapidly whereas the trace minerals are usually resistant and react very slowly, if at all, and the clays are probably digested. The note reports on a preliminary study of the use of microorganisms to develop an alternative clean technology that will give results comparable to those achievable with hot inorganic mineral acids but with more environmentally acceptable procedures. Various fungi and bacteria produce organic acids when grown in certain media. When these acids come into contact with Fe-stained sand grains the iron is removed as soluble complexes. Several strains of Aspergillus niger have been found to produce organic acids from sugar, predominantly citric, gluconic and oxalic acids, their relative yields depending on cultivation medium and conditions. As expected from similar crystal structures and favorable atomic size factors, titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum are completely soluble in one another above the transformation temperature of titanium. The fl phase parameters of the continuous solid solution are shown graphically. Limiting compositions for retained fl phase have been determined. VANADIUM and molybdenum both have body-centered-cubic structures at all temperatures and, from the atomic diameter comparison factor, 3.9 pct, would be expected to form a complete series of solid solutions. The existence of complete solubility has been confirmed by work' at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Furthermore, vanadium and molybdenum have favorable atomic size factors to form complete binary solid solutions with the B phase, high temperature form of titanium, which also has body-centered-cubic structure. Pietro-kowsky and Duwez' and Hansen et al." have established the existence of the complete series of solutions in these binary systems. A rotary kiln process was developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines to produce consistently an iron product containing 3 to 7 percent nickel. Cuban laterite and serpentine ores were smelted in a gas-fired batch-rotary kiln) 5 feet in diameter and 9 feet long. The metal contained 2 to 4 percent carbon, with little or no silicon, and could be produced on a large scale with modest capital investment. A total of 121 tests was run using this procedure. The tests were conducted with a maximum temperature of 2,625° F., using linings of firebrick containing 40 to 70 percent alumina. Slags in the kiln were acid to neutral. The material in each batch passed through three stages: (1) Sponge metal, (2) carburization, and (3) balling and meltdown. Half the tests were made while firing the kiln with atmospheric-temperature air; the remainder were fired with preheated air. Tests showed that preheated air decreased fuel requirements, dust losses, and reducing agent, and increased the capacity of the kiln.

"ABSTRACTThe paper addresses the application of automated monitoring, control, and navigation to improve dragline performance. SummaryImproving dragline performance in the Canadian coal mines is critical to the continued success of the industry. Draglines represent a large capital investment and coal prices are low by historic standards. This paper argues that the introduction of monitoring, control, and navigation on draglines offers an opportunity to significantly reduce a dragline’s operating cost per cubic metre moved. To place the importance of this in perspective, a North Dakota mine calculates that every 1% increase in dragline productivity means a savings to the mine of US$340,000 per year. MonitorsAutomated dragline monitoring is a well established technology with commercial products available since the early 1980s. The three main reasons for placing monitors on draglines are (Walker, 1993):1. productivity increases: reduce variations between different operators’ performance across different shifts;2. quality increases: increase the percentage of ore and waste loads that go to the correct destination; and3. special projects (engineering projects): justify installing static field exciters and regulator upgrades; implement power management; aid operator training; study high performance buckets, rigging changes, and various excavation sequences.Mines as diverse as Kennecott’s Cordero- Rojo Complex in the United States and Natal Coal Corp.’s Optimum Mine in South Africa report dragline productivity increases of 10% to 20% in the region attributed to the implementation of dragline monitoring."

Specialized marine blasting techniques were required to deepen and widen the access channel and turning basin of the Sudeste Port Terminal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This terminal has been designed to handle the exports of iron ore and other bulk solid cargoes to international markets. The Sudeste Port Terminal is connected to the iron ore quadrangle in Minas Gerais State by a dedicated railway line, giving Brazil’s independent miners a seamless access to global markets. However, the Sudeste Port Project is located in a protected marine environment. Blasting in this area has required a comprehensive blast induced ground vibrations monitoring and analysis program to ensure the safety of the sensitive structures surrounding of the blast areas. Nevertheless, the risk of generating higher ground vibrations on nearby structures due to the combination of short distances, larger excavations layers and complex geology, increased the complexity of the blast due to the limitations imposed by the maximum instantaneous charge and a demanding project schedule. Site-specific test blast programs were planned and executed in order to obtain in-situ vibration data to establish the local attenuation law, and also to better understand the role of dominant frequencies before production blasting started. This paper summarizes the main findings and solutions applied during the marine blasting project in the Sudeste Port Project.

Fay's glossary3/ of terms contains the following definition of "black sand": Heavy grains of various minerals which have a dark color and. are usually found accompanying gold in alluvial deposits, for example, magnetite, chromite, ilmenite, cassiterite, tourmaline, and others. The Bureau of Mines is issuing this report in answer to the many inquiries from individuals and firms as to how they may treat or sell the heavy black sands that accumulate in the sluice boxes of beach and river placering and to warn such individuals and firms against becoming too enthusiastic over the chances of striking it rich. For a half century or longer much money, energy, and time have been wasted in devising, building, and trying numerous machines to recover gold and platinum, also gem stones, from sand that generally has not been worth the effort. Volumes have been written on the subject, and thousands of letters of inquiry have been received by agencies of the State and Federal Governments. The demand for information has been so great that all of the Bureau's publications dealing wholly or partly with black sands are out of print. They are listed at the end of this report.

This chapter deals with the concepts ofshock waves aud detonation waves together, because a detonation wave is really a shock wave, supported by the explosive reaction that the shock wave ignites and propagates as it travels through the explosive material. In the context of rock blasting, furthermore, there is justification for treating shock waves and detonation waves together, because the mechanical effect of the detonation in an explosive in a drillhole in rock is propagated and its effects are spread throughout the surrounding rock by means of a shock wave The overall performance of an explosive in rock blasting or any other application is of course dependent on how much thermal energy is released in the chemical reaction that occurs when the material detonates, and on how much useful mrc!~amcal work the reaction products can do as they expand. A major portion of this chapter deals with the prediction and measurement of explosive performance, a subject which is now still in a process of rapid development.

Mining companies are not ill-informed on the topic of community health. There have been a number of research studies that have illuminated community health issues associated with mining, especially in the western Canadian province of British Columbia. However, what is missing amongst the literature is the perspective of mine managers and mining executives on this topic. This is important as mine managers and executives face a number of issues related to community health and are under pressure to consider the topic in more detail. This paper presents results from an exploratory qualitative investigation based on grounded theory research techniques into current community health considerations from the perspectives of mine executives and mine managers working in Western Canada. Interviews were conducted between February and May 2012 with 11 mining versus ten mining executives and managers who represented operating mines or mining umbrella organisations in Western Canada. Participants report on general community health issues that are perceived to be important, the perceived role that the mining sector should play?in contributing to community health and how this differs in Western Canada as compared to locations abroad, and?risks companyÆs face in making community health contributions. This paper concludes by drawing attention to pressing health needs that are present in Northern, rural and Aboriginal populations in Western Canada and provides a platform for future research initiatives focused on improving the health and well-being of communities associated with the mining industry. We present an algorithm to integrate the uncertainties of mean activity rate and magnitude cumulative distribution function in the interval estimation of the primary seismic hazard parameters: the exceedance probability and the mean return period. The algorithm is applicable for both the parametric and nonparametric modeling of magnitude distribution. When the Gutenberg-Richter relation-based parametric model of magnitude distribution is used, the interval estimation of its parameters is based on the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimators. When the nonparametric kernel estimation of magnitude distribution is used, we apply the iterated bias-corrected and accelerated method for the interval estimation, based on the smoothed bootstrap and second-order bootstrap samples. Previous studies indicated that the uncertainty of mean activity rate significantly affects the interval estimates of hazard functions only when the activity rate is low and the inference period is not long (Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki 2017). With increasing mean activity rate, the uncertainty of magnitude distribution dominates over the uncertainty of mean activity rate in the aggregated uncertainty of the hazard functions. The provided algorithm is generic and can be applied to capture the uncertainty of any multiparameter function from the uncertainties of its parameters. Here we present a further development of the algorithm developed by Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki (2017) by presenting its implementation in the Traffic Light System approach. As an example of use, we present the confidence intervals estimation of hazard parameters for the datasets related to induced seismicity accompanying underground exploitation of copper ore in the Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD) in Poland. The algorithm is under implementation to the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/) - an IT platform that provides access to integrated research infrastructures of the Thematic Core Service of Anthropogenic Hazards (TCS AH) of EPOS (European Plate Observing System). The algorithm is also a component of the pilot developed within the EPOS SP project (No 871121), which aims to strengthen the interaction with the private sector and the added value for society. The pilot demonstrates the potential of the IS-EPOS platform software applications for the technology-related probabilistic assessment of time-dependent seismic hazard. The pilot supports a Traffic Light System approach. The current seismic hazard is compared to threshold values based on the exceedance probability for a given magnitude.
