China’s mineral deposits are the result of metallogenic processes associated with the geodynamic evolution of tectonic plates and eventual amalgamation into their modern configuration. The principal tectonic provinces of China comprise the North China Craton, Yangtze Craton, Cathaysia Craton, Tarim block, Altay-Tianshan-Hinggan orogens (part of the Central Asian Orogenic Bel), Central China orogens, Songpan-Ganze orogen and Alpine-Himalayan fold belts, which are part of the huge Tethysides. These tectonic elements are testimony to a complex geological history spanning more than 3000 million years. This contribution will focus on selected areas of the Altay-Tianshan, the fold belts surrounding the North China Craton and Yangtze Craton and the mineral systems along the Ailaoshan-Red River fault zone. Mineral deposits in these provinces include gold, copper, molybdenum, tin, antimony, nickel, platinum group elements, lead and zinc.CITATION:Pirajno, F, 2015. "The year 2011 witnessed a major surge in rare earth prices as China, supplier of +95% of the world’s rare earths, reduced export quotas and increased export taxes and duties. In response, companies around the world are scrambling for alternative sources. In Canada too, there is a race to be the “first” rare earth producer. Something that is not generally realized is that Canada has a long history of rare earth production and was a major supplier from the early 1960’s to 1990. At one stage, Canada was said to be supplying more than one third of the world’s yttrium and probably supplied even more than that. Five decades ago, thorium was a key element in many non-nuclear applications and Canada became a major supplier of thorium from the late 1950’s to 1968, first as a by-product of uranium and then as a co-product of rare earths. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s original rare earth and thorium production facilities, which were located in the Elliot Lake uranium camp in Northern Ontario. The uses of these elements, geology, mineralogy, markets of the time, and processing are all discussed. Some of the lessons learned from these pioneering operations might be useful in today’s race to develop the next generation of rare earth production plants.INTRODUCTION The rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960’s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray tube in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths. The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950’s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950’s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths. Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available for thorium and the rare earths but unquestionably Elliot Lake production made a significant contribution to world production. "INTRODUCTIONThis is not a technical paper in the normal sense. It is an informal document which is intended to share the results of some recent cyclone research with our colleagues both in operations and in research.PILOT PLANT FACILITIESFigure 1 is a schematic of the closed circuit hydrocyclone pilot plant testing facility at the University of Alberta. In this figure the system is configured for some experimental work on wide angle cyclones which was recently completed. The rig is designed to study cyclones in the approximate range of 10 cm to 20 cm diameter. Notable features include the variable speed feed pump, the magnetic flowmeter and pressure sensors on the cyclone feed line and the travelling launder which permits simultaneous sampling of both product streams.ORGANIZATIONFor organizational convenience the subject matter has been divided into three parts:(1) Peculiar Partition Curves(2) Wide Angle Cyclones(3) Rope DischargePECULIAR PARTITION CURVESMuch of the initial empirical mathematical modelling work on cyclone classifiers dealt with homogeneous ores. A homogeneous ore is one in which all particles have substantially the same apparent density, or where one phase is very clearly predominant. In contrast, a heterogeneous ore is one in which there are at least two different density classes, each making a significant contribution to the ore composition. (Particle shape similarity is always assumed.)One of the problems which can arise when analysing the overall solids partition (selectivity, Tromp, etc ... ) curve for a heterogeneous ore is the peculiar shape which may be observed, when compared to partition curves for homogeneous ores. This is not an unusual occurrence and it has been documented by Lynch and Rao, Finch and Laplante and Larsen and Spring. The purpose of this section is to identify those operating conditions which may give rise to peculiar partition curves."

"Colored gemstones are most often mined in small scale artisanal mining operations. Sri Lanka is well known as source for precious stones since thousands of years. Gemstones are mine in small open pits, directly in rivers (river dredging) and in underground mines. Almost all mined deposits are alluvial deposits. PRECIOUS STONES AND DEPOSITS Precious stones from Sri Lanka are well known for thousands of years. Tales and legends from Arabia, India, China and reports from discoverers like Marco Polo describe the fabulous stones from Ceylon which was the name for Sri Lanka before 1972. Already 1000 BC King Salomon got valuable gemstones from the legendary Queen of Sheba on her visit to Jerusalem. Paintings (frescoes) of the “cloud maidens” with huge gemstones can be seen at the “mirror walls” of the Sigiriya rock fortress - one of the eight World Heritages Sites of Sri Lanka.And even today some of the most valuable and most desired gemstones come from Sri Lanka. The term “Ceylon Sapphire” stands for an excellent royal blue color of high quality corundum from Sri Lanka. Reason enough to look a bit closer how these gemstones are mined. Sri Lanka has rich gemstone deposits which are mined underground, in small open pits or directly within a river. Some of the primary deposits in magmatic and metamorphic rock are also known, but most gemstones are mined in secondary alluvial deposits. Gem bearing deposits can be found in a band from NW to SE. Highly probable deposits and main mining areas can be found around Ratnapura – the city of gems, down to the coast (Matale) and up to the region around Elahera. These secondary deposits are mostly thin layers of gravel and sand, so called “illam”. The depth can vary between some dm to 10 25 m or even almost 40 m. But the average depth is about 12 m. Gemstone mining is controlled, licensed and regulated by a special authority – the National Gem and Jewelry Authority - which was founded in 1993. Another task of this authority is the promotion and development of the gemstone industry and the control of import and export of gemstones. Any violence of the NGJA law can lead to a fine or even up to 5 years imprisonment. To increase the confidence in the gemstone industry the Authority offers a unique service to foreigners. All bought gemstones can be tested free of charge in certain laboratories in Ratnapura and Colombo. So visitors can be sure they got no imitations, wrong stones or even synthetic stones or glass. It was said that detected synthetic stones will be destroyed and the seller will do all he can to replace the stone with the right stone. Otherwise he will lose his license."

The environmental and economic impacts of a significant dependence on fossil fuels are affecting the future of sectors such as of mining. These impacts are prompting the Australian Government to seek solutions for reducing its dependence on fossil fuels more generally, such developing clean energy and improving energy efficiency. However, limited research has been undertaken to assess the potential synergies between clean energy and mining in an uncertain global future. This paper analyses current energy use by mining in Australia and reviews the drivers and opportunities for energy efficiency and cleaner energy technologies to be coupled to mining under three future scenarios. Linkages between mining and clean energy are investigated for three global scenarios for mining and metals to 2030, developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), namely Green Trade Alliance, Rebased Globalism and Resource Security. These scenarios are applied to assess how they could change the barriers, opportunities and trade-offs required for the development of a more sustainable energy sources by the minerals industry in Australia.

The steps for the beneficiation of iron ores differ from ore to ore, depending on the mineralogical phases of the particular iron ore and the nature of the association of the gangue minerals with iron oxide in that ore. The extent to which the beneficiation can be undertaken economically depends both on the amount and the nature of the gangue. The analysis of the phases present in an orebody optimises the mining and process operations (separation, beneficiation, sintering, etc).X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides qualitative and quantitative information about the main ore phases as well as the gangue mineralogy and the amorphous content present in a sample. In addition, modern quantification methods such as Rietveld refinement allow the calculation of the distribution of elements in solid solutions such the substitution of Fe with Al in goethite or hematite.The use of high speed detectors has made XRD an important tool for grade and process control. Finger printing of XRD data can facilitate multi-dimensional mapping of ore deposits and drill cores, identifying regions of favourable mineral compositions. Grade control using XRD can be completely automated and controlled remotely.The two case studies in this paper demonstrate how XRD and finger printing can be used for grade control, process optimisation and quality control of a goethitic and a magnetitic iron ore. The enormous potential of XRD as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ores will be demonstrated.CITATION:K÷nig, U, 2013. Surface properties of metal sulphides have a great significance in various areas of engineering and science, such as acid mine drainage, contaminant sorption, and metal separation. In various attempts at producing metal sulphide particles from synthetic solutions, prodigious quantities of nuclei that grow only to colloidal dimensions have been frequently reported. This copious nucleation is promoted by the high levels of supersaturation that characterize most precipitation reactions. Colloidal particle formation in precipi¬tation-based separation processes results in sub-optimal solid-liquid separation, which is alleviated by the production of more highly crystalline particles or agglomerates. The current work approaches this challenge from an electrochemistry perspective, by measuring surface charge potential of precipitant particles during metal sulphide precipitation with respect to the concentration of metal sulphide lattice ions in solution. Electrophoresis was used to measure the metal sulphide particle zeta potential and the settling properties were obtained by performing settleability measurements using an Imhoff settling cone. A suspension of copper sulphide particles was precipitated from synthetic solutions of copper and sulphide ions at equimolar concentrations. Immediately after precipitation the copper sulphide particles had a zeta potential of -50 mV and a settleability of about 7 ml.l-1. With the addition of copper ions the settleability increased by a factor of nearly three times and the zeta potential also increased to a maximum of -40 mV. A decrease in zeta potential to a minimum of -60 mV was observed after the addition of sulphide ions and this was associated with a settleability of 0 ml.l-1.

This study focused on acidic wastewater from producing sulfuric acid system in zinc smelter containing mercury 21.48mg/L, zinc 55.85mg/L, lead 38.50mg/L, copper 1.68mg/L, cadmium 10.25mg/L, As 29.86mg/L treated by biologics. The factors of pH value, the ratio of biologics to mercury, complexing time, hydrolytic time and temperature were studied in this paper. Experimental results indicated that at pH value 10, quantity of biologics to mercury ratio was 16, complexing time 30min, hydrolyzation time 20min, temperature at 40?, concentration of mercury in treated water was removed to 22.15µg/L. At same time heavy metals such as Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd, As was removed by biologics, the remained concentration in treated water was Zn 0.53mg/L, Pb 0.12mg/L, Cu 0.01mg/L, Cd low to 0.01mg/L and As 0.023mg/L. According to EDAX analysis, mercury content in complexing sediment reached 28.49% easily to recycle as raw material and low concentration of heavy metals in hydrolytic sediment easily to dispose and treat.

Over the past few years, there has been an emerging relationship between business and civil society, especially NGOs. This relationship has the potential to bring about significant change, identifying common ground between commercial and societal interests. The mining industry has been a leader in acknowledging the need for community consultation and engagement. This paper argues that partnerships can make a very significant contribution to the industry as it comes to terms with the dilemma of an open economic system pushing against a closed ecological system.The paper will pose a number of questions: where is the locus for debate about sustainability in the mining sector?; how well embedded within companies are the new competencies that Leon Davis first identified in 1995 for the mining sector?; how has education for mining engineers or exploration geologists changed to prepare people for what are very different expectations within the working environment?; how well is the industry doing in managing its own environmental impact and what is its responsibility to an agenda for sustainability which extends beyond its own operations?;and how can NGO partnerships contribute to more sustainable outcomes? The paper does not aim to answer these questions, but to explore them in the hope that the issues and possibilities raised will contribute to advancing progress towards sustainability within the industry.

The furnace was commissioned in 1973 and produces a high-grade sulphide matte containing nickel, copper and cobalt, which is shipped to refineries in Zimbabwe and Norway for further processing. This paper outlines the recent process improvements and plant expansions that have resulted in a capacity increase from 40 000 to 60 000 tons per annum of metal production.

This paper outlines a unique case of the development of strategies to reduce ventilation and heating costs in Konsuln iron ore mine in northern Sweden. The mine, located just south of Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s Kiruna iron ore mine, was developed as a test mine from 2018-2020 for the Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project. Besides functioning as a test mine, Konsuln also contributes to ore production. The existing mine ventilation system was designed for the current production rate of 0.8 million tons per annum (Mtpa). There is a plan to increase this rate to between 1.8 and 2.0 Mtpa.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, KCM Nkana, Zambia The Nkana smelter was initially commissioned in 1931, with two reverberatory furnaces, two Peirce-Smith converters, and blister copper casting facilities. Reverberatory furnaces were the mainstay of production up until 1994, when an El Teniente Converter (CT) was installed to upgrade reverberatory furnace matte to white metal, prior to converting in conventional Peirce-Smith (PS) converters. In 2000, a decision was taken to increase the proportion of concentrate smelted in the CT by introduction of bone-dry concentrate injection through the tuyeres. A flash dryer with a nominal capacity of 1 200 metric tons per day of dry product, and associated tuyere injection system was commissioned in March 2004. Based on the projected concentrate arisings from the KCM mines into the future, as seen in 2004, it was decided to develop the CT to be the primary smelting vessel at Nkana, to handle a minimum of 1 250 tons per day of concentrate, and to operate only one reverberatory furnace in slag-cleaning mode pending a full evaluation of alternative slag-cleaning technologies. The anticipated cathode production from Nkana was to be in the range 140 to 150 000 tons per annum. This paper details the outcomes from trials that were carried out in August and September 2004, using two reverberatory furnaces for slag cleaning. The results of these trials, plus further work in October and November, provided confidence to move to one reverberatory furnace for slag cleaning in December 2004. With the advent of Vedanta as the majority shareholder in KCM at the end of 2004, the approach has been to maximize the available smelting capacity. Currently, two reverberatory furnaces and the CT are on-line, with the higher silica concentrates going to the reverberatory furnaces with an appropriate amount of pyrite, and the cleaner concentrates going to the CT. Expansion of the smelter is currently under investigation.

The authors describe two stratiform intrusions within a two miles thick ophiolite belt, one of the many ophiolite (serpentine) belts of the eugeosynclinal sequences of the Kalgoorlie System (metamorphic age c.2700 million years). Unusually good evidence of gravitational differentiation involving cumulates for an Alpine type peridotite-gabbro intrusion has been obtained, in spite of modifications of the original igneous rocks imposed by regional metamorphism. Unmetamorphosed relics of cumulate rocks are a surprising feature of this occurIfence.'fhe differentiation process reflected in the layered sequences is compared to that of the Stillwater Intrusion, Montana. Phase, cryptic and rhythmic layering are recognized. The economic significance of this study lies not only in the possibility of nickel mineralization in this ophiolite belt, but also in that much detailed information on the nature of these belts, which is difficult to obtain in the case of the more altered and sheared rocks of the belts carrying gold and nickel ore deposits nearby, is gathered from the Yilmia occurrences.

The Rise and Shine Shear Zone is a mineralised low-angle deformation zone traceable for at least 7 km through biotite zone schist of the Dunstan Range, central Otago. The zone is commonly believed to be similar to the actively mined Macraes deposit. The Rise and Shine Shear Zone occurs in the immediate footwall of the Thomsons Gorge Fault, a regional scale Cretaceous normal fault that juxtaposes chlorite zone schist against biotite zone schist. Most mineralised rocks are deformed and record a progression from early stages of semiductile deformation to more brittle cataclasis. Folds in mineralised rocks trend northwards. The mineralised schist is hydrothermally altered with variable silicification, sericitisation, chloritisation, replacement of titanite by rutile and carbonate alteration. Gold is associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite and occurs in both ductile and brittle microstructures. Sheared and mineralised schist is cut by north-striking fault zones which host mineralised quartz veins. Veins in the shear zone contain hydrothermal albite. Trace element analyses show enrichment in As, U, Th and rare earth elements. Many of the above features are similar to Macraes deposit, but there are important differences. In particular, the Macraes deposit is hosted in lower grade rocks and truncated beneath by a normal fault, Macraes has no U or Th enrichment, Macraes veins have no albite and folds at Macraes trend NW-W. Rise and Shine mineralised rocks have no Cr enrichment and no hydrothermal graphite.

Characterizing coal mine roof rock is extremely important for hazard assessment, reinforcement, and entry design. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) is an innovative rock mass classification that has found acceptance in the coal mining industry. A disadvantage of the original CMRR is that it cannot be determined in advance of mining, because it requires underground observations. An entirely new set of procedures have now been developed to determine the CMRR from exploratory drill core, as described in this paper. The new procedures employ Point Load Tests (PLT) to determine strength parameters that account for approximately 60% of the rating. Both diametral (parallel to bedding) and axial (perpendicular to bedding) PLT are conducted. The diametral tests allow estimates of bedding plane cohesion and rock anisotropy, both of which are critical to estimating susceptibility to horizontal stress. Traditional core logging procedures are used to determine discontinuity spacing and roughness. To ensure compatibility with the original CMRR, the new rating scales were verified by comparing drill core results with nearby underground exposures. To assist mine planners in using the new CMRR procedures, a large database of strength ratings of roof rocks was assembled through extensive point load testing and logging. Over 2000 point load tests (both axial and diametral) have been made on 30 common coal measure rock types from mines representing most U.S. coalfields. This database has been merged with the popular core rating system of J.C. Ferm into a field guide for geologists and engineers. By using the pictorial classification system of Ferm to identify the rock, typical CMRR can be compared with values calculated using the new CMRR procedures.

Hematite floatability from two low grade banded iron ores of India, namely banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) and banded hematite jasper (BHJ) using fatty acids and amine as the collectors is investigated under identical physico-chemical conditions. The results indicated that hematite present in BHQ ore is easy to float using both the collectors, compared to BHJ ore. The difference of flotability between the two banded iron ores is that quartz grains are coarser and well liberated below 100 micron size in case of BHQ compared to BHJ ore. In case of BHJ ore, fine hematite and quartz grains are intimately inter-grown and are dispersed in thick jasper bands leading to liberation problems. Besides that, dusty jasper particles coat over hematite surface in case of BHJ ore during the process of grinding, which hinders specific adsorption of collector on hematite or quartz surfaces. This is substantiated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The flotation studies have indicated that it is possible to achieve ~64% Fe with ~67% recovery from a BHQ ore using both anionic and cationic collectors from a feed containing around 38% Fe. In contrast, the hematite recovery in BHJ ore was poor. Differences in the ore characteristics that affect the flotability of hematite present in both the ores are compared. This article explores the Fray Farthing Chen (FFC) Cambridge process, a novel method for the electrochemical deoxidation of metal oxides in molten salt, discovered at the University of Cambridge in 1997. The process was hailed as a highly promising, potentially low cost, novel method for the production of titanium metal direct from its oxides. The article should inform researchers in the field of some of the challenges in the commercialization of a novel, high profile process involving multiple stakeholders. The author, former senior process engineer at British Titanium Plc, the company originally tasked with commercializing titanium production via the FFC Cambridge process, reviews the latest literature and discusses past and present progress in the pursuit of low cost titanium metal via this process. This paper will review impacts on longwall design and ground stability assessment due to advances in mine automation and sensing technology. Several new approaches to the prediction and monitoring of longwall panel and gateroad stability have recently become mature, and are ready for application in problematic ground control situations. These methods are revealing significant detail regarding deformation and failure mechanics of critical underground structures. Examples of how these technologies have worked successfully will be given, and applications for the use of these tools for cost-effective engineering design and monitoring will be suggested.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computerised management systems for spatial data, offering improved data management, extensive data manipulation techniques and greater understanding of data. At the Wangaloa Coal Mine, South-East Otago, ArcGIS is being used to manage, integrate, analyse and visualise the diverse range of datasets being generated from an interdisciplinary research team. GIS will assist with identifying spatial and temporal patterns associated with the current site rehabilitation strategy. This paper will present an overview of how GIS can be a useful tool for understanding ecological recovery during mine site rehabilitation.   The Wangaloa opencast coal mine, owned by Solid Energy NZ Ltd, was closed in 1989 after more than 40 years of operation. Rehabilitation efforts involving more than 60 000 native plants began in October 2001. At Wangaloa sample points were randomly selected at 100 m intervals and recorded using a differential GPS. Plant, soil and invertebrate data have been collected at each sample point. Plots of 8 - 9 plants have been established within approximately 5 m of each sample point. Since September 2003 seasonal monitoring of plant growth and survival has been carried out. Chemical and physical datasets have been generated from soil collected in June and December 2003 for each sample point. A more restricted dataset is being generated for soil collected on a seasonal basis from March 2004. Plant and soil characteristics from these datasets have been attached to each sample point and GIS layers have been created. Relationships between data layers can be explored based on their spatial patterns. Examples presented from Wangaloa include distribution of planting success and temporal variation; temporal change in pH; interpolated pH map; digital elevation model; relationships between planting success and growth with pH and organic matter. GIS is proving to be a valuable tool on the integrated project at Wangaloa.

Impala Platinum, the second largest platinum producer in the world, is embarking on a major expansion strategy to increase its platinum output from 1.95 moz to 2.8 moz by the year 2008. The smelter complex, situated in Rustenburg, will undergo substantial modifications, and will require a solution to the capture and treatment of the smelter off-gases and dust produced during smelting and converting operations. One of the solutions explored was an integrated approach, where all the off-gases from both the primary smelting electric furnaces and the converter operations are routed to a large central gas cleaning and double catalysis, double absorption acid plant. In-line sulphur burning, utilizing a highly flexible LURO1spin cup burner with a turn down ratio of 50%, ensures that the acid plant operates independently of operating conditions at the smelter complex.
