"The author will review the early history of shaft sinking as well as focus on the improvements made in shaft design and construction over the last fifty years (1970 to 2019) to predict how shaft sinking will change over the next fifty years and describe what the shaft sinking world might look like in 2070. INTRODUCTION It is a great honour to be one of your keynote speakers for the Fourth International Conference on Shaft Design and Construction being held in Toronto in November 2019. This is one of the opportunities we have to thank the Mining Companies of the world as well as the industries and companies we serve for their support of the mining contracting and shaft sinking business of Canada and the world at large. Many of these companies are represented here today. Without your support many of the innovations we will talk about today would not be possible. We would also like to thank all the companies that work with us in our business including all the contractors and suppliers who provide the various services we require. These include equipment manufacturers, engineering companies, project management companies and suppliers large and small who cater to our every need as quickly as possible. Without all these partners we would not be as good as we are. Many of these companies are our sponsors this week. Thank you from all of us! This is also an appropriate time to pause and think about those Shaft Sinkers we have lost and those who have been injured on our projects around the world. Please bow your head and remember the Shaft Sinkers you have worked with, who did not return home or those who returned home injured. Think about how we can continue the work of making shafts safer every day as we go forward with our projects so everyone goes home to their families safe and sound. Pause for a minute and thank you. The subject matter we have chosen to discuss today is “Shaft Sinking in the Next Five Decades”. How will the work be done, how fast will it be done, what will it cost, and why we think this may occur? It is appropriate to consider this over the next few days with this auspicious group we have assembled. Today, we will look back at all the advances that have been made over the last many years and look ahead to the future to attempt to predict what shaft sinking will look like in 2070. When I look around the room I recognize that many of us will not be around then so we need not worry about being wrong. Suffice it to say that the next 50 years will be very interesting and exciting for the shaft sinking business."

The current paper looks at evaluating the merits of large geared mills versus gearless driven mills by evaluating the following factors: The capability of currently available systems in terms of power and mill diameter Efficiency in terms of overall electrical power consumed vs mechanical output power Capital cost Running costs Cooling requirements in terms of air versus water cooling Installation and delivery time World?s largest geared drive ? 2x8500kW ? Wushan, China (operating) Among the many reasons that geared drives on large SAG mills are not favoured, is due to not having an efficient variable speed drive option (60 to 80% critical speed), which is required for process reasons. As technological advances have occurred quite rapidly in recent years, this paper uses the latest data in applying these comparisons and attempts to dispel some of the myths regarding Slip Energy Recovery (SER) and variable frequency drive technology on twin pinion drive systems. Early attempts to provide load sharing on twin pinion drives used primitive electronics which have since been developed to eliminate the problems encountered in earlier attempts. In particular, torque pulsations between the twin motors have been overcome using a higher number of devices (pulses) and better electronics. With successful operation of 2 x 6.5MW (Phu Kham, Laos) and three 2 x 7MW units under manufacture (Pascu Lama) and a further 40 projects worldwide, energy efficient Hyper Synchronous SER drives are now mature and ready for use on 2 X 10MW dual drive mills. Speed variation required is in the range of +/- 15% of synchronous motor speeds. VVVF drive packages from ABB and Siemens are also available for 2 x 10MW in low and high speed options. Dual hydraulic inching drives provide a much safer and convenient operation with the added advantage of locked charge detection.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investi-gation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the sixteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of the latter holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

Stainless iron, as mild stainless steel is usually called, an alloy ranging from 11.50 to 15.00 per cent chromium with carbon under 0.12 per cent, has been considered to be not appreciably affected in respect to corrosion resistance by heat treatment. This metal, while one of the most widely used of the "straight" chromium stainless alloys, has failed in many applications because of insufficient information regarding heat treatment. These failures have been attributed to many possible causes from an inherent lack of resistance to corrosion and misapplication to mlysterious electrolytic effects or comparatively minute non metallic inclusions. Many uses for a steel with such excellent physical properties as are latent in this alloy have been lost on account of corrosion failures which could have been avoided by applying proper heat treatment. The alloy has not received the recognition or attention it should because of the fact that the details of its metallurgical behavior were not thoroughly understood. Response to heat treatment of the steel is well known as regards tensile properties,1-2 but its application has been for improvement in tensile characteristics or on account of machining considerations rather than for corrosion prevention. The potential user of this steel has not been clearly advised in papers, either technical or commercial, that have been written about it in the last 10 years or more, of particular features that are of prime importance in developing the excellent properties of this metal. The data to be presented in this paper are concerned mainly with the effect of heat treatment on the corrosion resistance, but a study has also been made of the concurrent microstructural changes and an explanation developed for the phenomena revealed, as well as a correlation to the other physical properties—hardness, tensile characteristics and impact strength. Stainless steel, largely used for cutlery purposes, an alloy of approximately 13.00 per cent Cr with 0.30 per cent C;, must be hardened and the surface prepared by polishing or pickling for best resistance to staining and corrosion. Pennsylvania Power & Light Company is an investor-owned public utility which was incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on June 4, 1920, with general offices at 901 Hamilton Street, Allentown, Pennsylvania. At the present time PP&L is operating five coal-fired steam electric stations, two hydroelectric stations and one steam heat plant which is being converted from anthracite to oil fired. In addition, PP&L is a partner in both the Keystone and Conemaugh mine mouth bituminous coal-fired steam electric stations in Central Pennsylvania and also part owner of a company which operates another hydroelectric station. PP&L plants, other than the two mine mouth stations, are located in Central Eastern Pennsylvania. (Figure 1) The company derives about 99% of its operating revenues from supplying electric service, while the balance is from the one steam heat plant serving the city of Harrisburg. The entire service area covering 10,000 square miles in 29 counties, has a population of approximately 2,300,000 people. The area served is mostly suburban. It includes 109 communities each having a population in excess of 5,000 people. The largest cities served are Allentown, Bethlehem, Harrisburg, Hazleton, Lancaster, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Williamsport which range from 50,000 - 120,000 in population. So you see our service area does not include any major cities. The area has industrial, commercial, residential, agricultural and recreational activities that are linked with the Eastern Megalopolis by an extensive interstate limited-access highway system and railroad networks. We consider this Central Eastern Pennsylvania area we serve as the "heart of the market" -- an area with great growth potential.

"This paper presents a case history in the design and construction of high-capacity drilled shafts for the iconic New York Wheel presently being constructed along the St. George area waterfront in northern Staten Island, New York. Although the site is located in an area that offers views of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, and New York Harbor, the variable and challenging subsurface conditions at the site and the structural loading requirements for Wheel erection and service conditions presented geotechnical design and construction challenges. The paper focuses on site and subsurface conditions, drilled shaft design and construction details, results of Osterberg-cell and lateral load testing, and load test data analysis and evaluation.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe proposed 630-foot (190 m) -tall New York Wheel (the Wheel) is projected to be one of the tallest observation wheels in the world. Upon completion, the Wheel will be capable of carrying over 1,400 passengers in its 36 capsules. The Wheel site is located along New York Harbor offering views of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, and the New York Harbor; see Fig. 1. The Wheel structure is sited along the waterfront, and served by a 3-story terminal located south of the Wheel in the eastern portion of the site and having a footprint area of about 34,250 sq-ft (3,180 sq-m). A 4-story parking Garage, with a footprint of about 112,840 sq-ft (10,480 sqm), is to be constructed south of the Wheel in the central and western portions of the site.SITE AND SUBSURFACE CONDITIONSThe site’s close proximity to the New York Harbor presented geotechnical challenges because the site is located in an area that was once beyond the historic shoreline of Staten Island. The site is an about 350,000-sq-ft (32,500-sq-m) parcel generally bounded by the Richmond County Bank Ballpark to the southeast, the 9-11 Memorial to the east, Bank Street to the north and northeast, and Richmond Terrace and an associated retaining wall to the southwest and south. A 50-ft (15-m) -wide New York City Transit Easement, with an active on-grade service area and tracks, is located in the southern portion of the site. See Fig. 2 for site location and approximate location of the Wheel foundation footprint."

First -aid training as an adjunct to safety is receiving more wide spread recognition in the industries every year . Moreover , the adoption of a program for giving firstaid training to practically all employees at a mine or plant is based upon the experience gained and good results obtained from standard first -aid instruction during the past two decades . In the near future industries that desire to maintain a low accident rate , to decrease compensation costs , to reduce lost time , and to build up an efficient , loyal working force , will recognize that training in first aid is one way of attaining these results with little expenditure of time and effort . Progressive organizations will require every man from the superintendent down to take first - aid training and not , as heretofore , only a small percentage of the working force . When employees learn that first - aid training can be applied not only at their daily tasks but in their homes and on tthhee highways ,, they will welcome the opportunity of learning how to care for injuries and perhaps save lives . In a limited way first - aid instruction was given to miners as early as 1899 . Later , in 1904 , a few of the companies in the Pennsylvania anthracite district inaugurated the distribution of first - aid packets to their employees and instructed them in the use of the contents . It remained , however , for a branch of the United States Government to grasp the real significance of widespread first - aid training as an effective means of saving life and minimizing suffering from the large number of accidents among workers in the mineral industries . Equilibrium in the reaction was investigated at temperatures of 1500°, 1550°, and 1600°C for sulfur concentrations up to 7.2 wt pct. Multisample crucibles contained the liquid alloys in a resistance-heated furnace using a technique especially designed for the study of more complex alloys to be reported separately. Modern free-energy data are used to correct the H2S:H2 ratio for dissociation of H2S and calculalion of the partial pressure of S2. Published data on the equilibrium are similarly corrected. Thermodynanzic treatment of the data employs the composition variable zs = nS/(nFe — nS) and the activity coefficient Gs = as/zs The data at 1500" and 1550°C are fitted by the equation log s = —2.30zs. Within the limits of experimental error the same coefficient is applicable to the data at higher temperatures. Equations are given for the free-energy change in Reaction [I] as well as for the solution of S, gas in the metal. The heat of solution of 1/2 s2 is -32.28 i2.5 kcal. Uncertainty in the free energy is very much smaller. For dilute solutions of interest in steelmaking, the activity coefficient of sulfur is unchanged from that listed in Basic Open Hearth Steel-making. DETERMINATIONS of the thermodynamic properties of sulfur in liquid iron by Morris and williams1 and by Sherman, Elvander, and chipman' provided a basis for control of sulfur in steelmaking processes. From the standpoint of understanding the chemistry of metal plus nonmetal in liquid solution they left several questions unanswered. The activity of sulfur in dilute solution at about 1600°C was well-established but temperature coefficients were uncertain, due at least in part to the use of the optical pyrometer and uncertainty regarding the effect of sulfur on emissivity. It appeared that deviation from Henry's law increased with increasing temperature, a most unusual behavior requiring either confirmation or disproof. These studies were based on experimental determination of equilibrium in the reaction: At high temperatures H2S is partially dissociated so that the gas mixture contains HS, S2, and S in addition to HS. At the time of the earlier studies the free energies of these constituents were unknown and it was therefore impossible to make adequate correction for dissociation. Observations on the effects of alloying elements by Morris and coworkers1, 3 and by Sherman and Chip-man4 enable us to assess the effects of alloying elements on the activity and to make corrections for incidental impurities in the binary liquid. These studies as well as a number of more recent investigations will be reviewed in detail after out own experimental results have been presented. It was our purpose in planning this study to avoid uncertainties regarding the emissivity of alloys and the errors of thermal diffusion which plagued some of the early attempts,5 by using a resistance furnace and thermocouple in preference to induction heating and optical pyrometer. Modern data on free energies of the gaseous species are to be applied to our data and to those of other investigators to obtain corrected values of K1 and of the activity coefficient and ultimately to relate the sulfur content of the bath to the equilibrium partial pressure of S,. Extension of the study to include ternary and complex solutions will be described in a later section. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD a) Preparation and Calibration of H2-H2s Gas Mixture. The source of hydrogen sulfide was a preparer mixture of 43 pct H2S, balance hydrogen, contained in a large aluminum cylinder. This was passed through anhydrone and through a microflowmeter. Hydrogen was passed through platinized asbestos, ascar-ite, and anhydrone, and through a capillary flowmeter. Argon was passed through copper wool at 500°C, then through ascarite, anhydrone, and a flowmeter. The flow rate of hydrogen was kept constant at 200 ml per min, to which an arbitrary amount of the hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide mixture was constantly added and then the prepared gas mixture was introduced into the reaction tube through a gas mixer. In certain experiments 200 ml per min of argon was added to the hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide gas mixture to increase the total flow rate of gas. The ratio of hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide in the inlet gas was checked for each run by chemical analysis. A sample of the gas taken from a bypass was bubbled through zinc and cadmium acetate solution (4 pct zinc acetate, 1 pct cadmium acetate, and 1 pct acetic acid) to remove hydrogen sulfide from the gas mixture, and the flow rate of the remaining hydrogen was measured by a soap bubble method to determine the volume of hydrogen. The amount of hydrogen sulfide absorbed in solution was determined by titration with iodine against sodium thiosulfate, with starch used as the indicator. The ratio of hydrogen sulfide to hydrogen in the inlet gas could be kept within ±2 pct in the range from 10-2 to 5 x 10"4 which corresponds to from 0.2 to 7.0 wt pct sulfur in liquid iron. b) Furnace Arrangement. Developers can then ensure that systems deliver key information in an accurate and timely way. In this paper, general maintenance decision-making is discussed, with examples of how model-based analysis can improve the information delivered to decision makers.

Traditionally pit optimisation and scheduling is carried out assuming that the resources, the commodity prices and production costs are all known. Once the pit contour and the mining schedule have been determined, geostatistical simulations can be used to assess the impact of the uncertainty in the resources on the pit design and the schedule, and likewise stochastic simulations can be used to test its robustness to fluctuations in costs and prices. But it would be more interesting to have a dynamic procedure for optimising the pit as the resources become better known and as economic factors such as commodity prices and costs evolve over time. This paper presents a novel approach for doing this. Rather than working with millions of small selective mining units, it was decided to work with large blocks, called macro-blocks. Mining sequences are defined as the quantities to be extracted from each macro-block in each time period. Feasible mining sequences are mining sequences that respect the accessibility constraints, and also the geometric constraints on the amounts that can be extracted from any one block over time, or from all the active blocks at a given time. Having defined feasible mining sequences, their mathematical properties were studied. It was found that natural breakpoints occur in the sequences when one set of blocks have been completely mined out, thereby opening up access to others. It was discovered that families of sequences exist, and that they are convex and closed under certain types of row permutation operations. Convexity is an advantage when optimising. The closure property opens up the possibility of mixing and matching subsequences of rows in the sequences. Another interesting property is that the sequences form branching families, rather like the binomial and trinomial trees used to model prices in finance and in real options.It is easy to generate large numbers of feasible mining sequences randomly. A two-step procedure is used to find the best one (or the best few) using three economic criteria: expected NPV,the probability of a negative NPV, and the percentage of years when the cash flow is negative. The procedure was tested on a synthetic gold mine based on the characteristics of the Essakane mine in Burkina Faso. The results were encouraging.

The present study was carried out to have a better understanding of permeability for greater velocity ranges, An equipment was designed and built for this purpose, Pressure drop measurements were made across the thickness of open-cell nickel foams, Pore and window sizes were measured by image analysis on SEM micrographs, The experimental results are in relatively good agreement with the Hazen-Dupuit-Darcy model (R2>98%), The permeability is affected by pore size, porosity and the normalized projected area of the connecting pores (ie. windows).

Today, underground exploration is spotlighted as an infinitely developable area. For this purpose, many tunneling technologies were created. And until this very day, many techniques are being developed for more efficient underground movement. Although previous technologies have been developed and now being used in various forms like TMB, struck propulsion method and hydraulic propulsion method, it is hard to find a robot type exploring in small scale. But development of small scale underground exploration robot is a promising research subject for its usage in examination of soil, mineral, and subterranean resources, investigation of hazardous regions, and the military. So we developed a robot that can dig and move underground, inspired from the motion of earthworm and mole cricket. Earthworm and mole cricket dig the soil in the front and draw it off backward, so that they can move forward. We developed a mechanism that uses 2 rotating solid of revolution (bits) for pulverizing the firmly united soil in the front and put it inside the body. The bits rotate in the opposite direction of each other. While moving forward, the soil in the front moves along the spiral on the bit and is saved inside the body. The soil saved inside is taken out through an outlet in the back by a ventilation system. The ventilation system on the ground blows through a hosepipe connected to inner part of the robot and the air blows off the soil. The moving mechanism of exploring underground can be classified into 2 parts. One is to fix the blade link on the soil in a form of 4-bar link. The other one is to move forward rotating the whole link. When the blade link system for movement rotates a certain degree, one blade link is fixed, while the other one is folded in. When 2 blade links of different length rotate as it is, different torque is applied on each link. By the law of action and reaction, the link that has larger torque leads the rotation and movement.

Gold has been often used as an alloying component in order to increase or modify the catalytic properties of an active metal. For example, in the hydroconversion of methylcyclopentane, Riahi et al [1] shown that the addition of gold to palladium or platinum enhances the activity which becomes greater than that of the pure metals whereas the selectivity towards products resulting from ring expansion increases. Molenbroek et al [2] presented a detailed study on Ni-Au catalysts which exhibit activity for steam reforming and have been proved to be more resistant toward carbon formation than the pure Ni catalysts. Blocking of highly reactive Ni edge and kink sites by Au atoms is assumed to be the reason for the increased robustness of the Ni-Au catalyst. Nevertheless, the own catalytic properties of pure gold have been almost ignored up to the pioneering work of Haruta et al [3] which demonstrates the high activity of gold for CO oxidation at low temperatures. Other reactions such as WGS reaction, propylene epoxidation or benzene total oxidation have then been shown to be catalyzed by gold [4]. This discovery induced the publication of papers devoted to analyze the different factors controlling the activity of gold catalysts. Among them the most relevant appears to be the gold particle size, the nature of the support [5] and the preparation methods [6]. Clearly distinguish between support and size effect is not straightforward. Indeed, the calcination step often needed to synthesize supported catalysts on different supports, leads to different particle sizes showing that particle size and support are interdependent. To circumvent this difficulty, Au-based supported catalysts have been synthesized by using laser vaporization and low energy cluster beam deposition. The as prepared catalysts have then been characterized and tested in CO oxidation reaction.

The rock breakage process in drilling is a main source of noise in roof bolting operations, especially when hard rocks are encountered. Proper control of drilling operation can provide an opportunity to improve energy efficiency of drilling and to reduce noise and heat generated from bit-rock friction. Drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings to confirm this noise-reduction strategy. Preliminary results show that the drilling parameters, penetration and rotational rates can be controlled to achieve in a desirable range in drilling medium hard rock. Based on the theoretical and experimental studies, rational drilling control strategy is developed for noise control while maintaining a safe and productive roof bolting operation. Applying this strategy in underground roof bolting operation, the noise exposure of roof bolter operators will be significantly reduced.

And other technological growth takes place far away from the public view but can have as much of an impact on our daily life as does shopping at Amazon or connecting with friends on social media.At the “THRIVE 2018, Innovations Advancing Mining” conference presented by SME on Sept. 27 at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square in Pittsburgh, PA, the focus was on innovation and how it affects the global mining industry.More than 100 people were on hand for the inaugural event, and they were treated to a unique program that focused on the cutting-edge innovations that will carry the mining industry into the future while increasing safety and productivity along the way.2018 SME President Barbara Arnold was the driving force behind the conference and put together the technical program with a focus on innovation through the entire mining life cycle and into the future. Talks ranged from more efficient and safer ways to extract minerals to some of the most advanced end uses of minerals and metals, including the use of 3D printing to create precision parts for machines and humans from advanced metal alloys.“We need to adapt new technologies to our industry and develop additional technologies as we provide materials and metals for infrastructure and energy development in the United States, around the globe, and to the Moon and beyond,” Arnold told Mining Engineering. “Our inaugural THRIVE conference sets the stage for these innovations to be applied and to continue to be developed. Our mining industry can only continue to thrive with these advances.”"

The estimated requirement of the nation by the year 2020 is approx. 80 Mt of steel and more than 0.2 million MW installed capacity of the electricity, thereby increasing the consumption of the coking and non-coking coal, which is expected to be in tune of about 75 Mt & 500 Mt respectively. One of the major deleterious factors in achieving the goal is the deteriorating quality of the feed coal used in both steel and power industries. Indian coking coals, in general, are typified by high ash, high inert (both organic and inorganic), low rank, low reactive macerals content, heterogeneous petrographic make-up, inferior coking properties and poor amenability to washing, thereby necessitating suitable washing measure. Coke-based steel industries in India require washed coking coal containing ash % varying between 17-19. The situation demands taking on immediate challenges to fill up the gap between the requirements and supply of coking coal. This paper reviews the R&D attempts in this laboratory and throws light on the key measures as long-term solution to the problem. Search for alternative source of coking coal, like LVC coal and their judicious preparation technology. The low volatile coking coal (LVCC) constitutes about 50% of the total coking coal reserves in India. These coals are characterized by high raw coal ash content (37 to 40%) and very difficult washability potential. If these coals are treated in the existing washeries, which are generally 2 or 3-product systems, the cost of clean coal is high as the byproduct sale value is low. It has been proposed to produce a new type of by product, which enjoys high demand and good coking properties.

Systematic waterflooding was first tried in Washington County, Okla., in 1937, when a 40-acre project was begun in secs. 24, 29, 32, and 33, T. 27 N., R. 13 E., jointly by the Keener Oil Co. and the Phillips Petroleum Co. The property later was sold to Lee Morrison. A second project was begun in 1941 in sec. 14, T. 6 N., R. 12 E., by the Oklahoma Oil Corp. Both projects were abandoned by the end of 1942. A third project was begun in 1945 and the fourth in 1948, but 1949 actually was the beginning of intensive waterflooding development in Washington County. The results of previous waterflooding projects are described in Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.2 3 4/ Oil production in the county followed a similar trend, dropping to a low of 990,000 barrels in 1945, then steadily increasing until 1956, when more than 4 mil-lion barrels of oil was produced. Most of the increase in oil production is directly attributable to water injection.

A series of controlled experiments was conducted at four surface coal mines to study the effects of certain blast parameters upon the ground and air vibration. Preliminary scale-model blasts were conducted at a quarry to provide basic data. It was found that the amplitudes of the ground and air vibration were controlled by the maximum explosive weight per delay. Either cube root or square root scaling could be used for the seismic amplitudes, and cube root scaling could be used for the overpressure amplitudes. Both amplitudes were not significantly affected by the total charge weight per blast, the attitude of the boreholes, or the charge length or diameter. The overpressure amplitudes were affected by the charge depth, the use of cover over surface detonating cord, and the use of adequate stemming. The length of the delay intervals and the spacing of holes were important in determining the potential for reinforcement of the amplitudes in certain directions from the blasts. In downwind directions from the blast, the attenuation of the overpressure with distance decreases. Surface terrain did not significantly affect the overpressure amplitudes within the range investigated. The type of overburden affects the generation of both amplitudes and the propagation of the seismic amplitudes. Spectral analysis of the ground and air vibration is reported. A scaled distance of 300 ft/lb1/3 should produce a peak particle velocity of less than 1 ips and an overpressure of less than 128 dB linear peak. For square root scaling, a scaled distance of 75 ft/ lbl/2 should limit the ground vibration to less than 1 ips.
