The Bassick mine, located six miles east of Silver Cliff, Colorado, has, ever since its discovery, been noted for peculiar features. Some of these characteristics exist in one or two other mines, while some are entirely unique. Among these peculiarities I have selected the most noticeable for treatment in this paper: First. The methods of deposition of the ores, which is not, as in ordinary veins, in strata or layers parallel to the walls of the fissure. The ores are arranged in concentric layers upon detached and abraded fragments of the walls; each ore in a separate stratum, and always in the same place in the series. Second. The characteristics of the fissure or opening; its shape and dimensions; its contents, or the vein-filling; and its verticality. Third. The peculiar products of the mine. The most noticeable of these products is charcoal, which is occasionally, and at long intervals, found throughout the ore-body, and in the surrounding conglomerate, from the surface down to the present depth, which is something over eight hundred feet. The existence of charcoal here is, as far as I know, the only instance of its discovery in mines of metallic ores. Fourth. Besides the charcoal, there are other products, in themselves not peculiar, whose manner of arrangement and composition are unusual. The mine is situated near the centre of a small rounded hill of eruptive trachytic rock and feldspathic conglomerate. The diameter of the base of this hill varies from 700 to 1200 feet, and its height is 200 feet above the general level. A cliff or outcrop of fine conglomerate is exposed on the southwest side of the hill. On the northeast it joins by an upward slope the fine-grained, hardened feldspathic paste of Mount Tyndall, which rises 600 feet higher, and of which the elevation containing the Bassick mine thus forms an arm. On visiting the mine, one's attention, whether he is a scientist or not, is immediately attracted by the unusual method of arrangement of the ore. Possibilities of the analysis of potential energy of bubble-particle interaction on the basis of extended DLVO theory are discussed. Interaction energies of mineral silica, coal and pyrite particles with contact angles from 20 to 100 degrees and air bubbles in neutral and alkaline solutions are analyzed. It is shown that for hydrophilic silica, the formation of particle-bubble complexes (either in the area of primary or secondary potential minima) is impossible due to the high potential barriers (from 6000 to 140000 kT)and low values of the attraction force. There is shown that for coal and pyrite particles the energy of interaction vs. particle-bubble distance strongly depends on pH value. Improvement of floatability of minerals by the hydrophobization of their surface by collectors leads to the eliminating of potential barriers and the formation of the stable complexes of minerals and air bubbles in the area of primary potential minimum. In addition, due to hydrophobization of coal and pyrite changing pH has practically no influence on the energy of interaction. There are discussed results of the numerical calculations of normalized interaction forces in particle-bubble systems on the nanometer distances for pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite at contact angles up to 85° in comparison with the experimental data. The values of adhesion force for hydrophobized particles of coal and pyrite to air bubbles are about 10-5 N, that indicates stability of the formed flotation complexes. Examples of using the long-range and high-energy effect of hydrophobic interactions for improving minerals floatability are discussed. There are illustrated minerals wettability changes induced by the adsorption of thiol collector and hydrophobic polymer. Possibilities of flocculation and flotation of mineral slimes due the polymer-collector hydrophobic interactions are shown. Water & Earth Technologies, Inc. (WET), Habitat Management, Inc. (HMI) and Chevron Mining, Inc. (CMI) together developed a solution for reclaiming steep southwest facing slopes in mining Area 12C that have historically been prone to excessive erosion, low vegetation establishment and continuing maintenance. Area 12C is located in the east wing of the Chevron McKinley Coal Mine, 27 miles northwest of Gallup, New Mexico, on Navajo Nation land administered by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM). Mining in this area was completed in May of 2007. Challenges encountered for this reclamation project included the need to reclaim graded material on a slope of 18-35% with southwest facing aspect, the presence of undisturbed rock outcropping that needed to be avoided during reclamation, the operational need to limit bulldozer pushes and the inability to import or export additional materials for construction. Two different reclamation alternatives were considered for Area 12C. The first alternative would use a traditional reclamation approach including three levels of draining terraces designed to convey water on a 3% slope to a single riprapped down drain. Terracing and down drains have been used to reclaim areas with similar terrain conditions elsewhere at the McKinely Mine and have failed to adequately control erosion (Williamson 2006). Terrace overtopping and down drain blowouts have been issues in maintenance and functionality for the mine. Maintenance routines consist of cleaning out terraces where they have filled in with sediment and repairing damaged or blown out terraces and down drains.

The understanding of particle surface properties is essential for the study and evaluation of froth flotation phenomena, particularly in the investigation of various chemical or reagent effects. Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS) is a method used for the analysis of surface properties of powders for instance in the pharmaceutical industry. To the knowledge of the authors, it has however not been used before in applications related to mineral processing. The DVS technique involves measurement of the water uptake of a relatively small amount of sample as a function of the relative humidity (% RH) in a temperature-controlled environment. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the method and investigate how it can complement existing techniques for surface characterization in mineral processing. Four samples (feed, CuPb concentrate, Cu concentrate and Pb concentrate) from the Cu – Pb flotation process in the Garpenberg concentrator, Sweden, were analyzed by DVS and the traditional capillary absorption technique (Washburn capillary rise). This enabled comparison between the two methods and evaluation of their respective advantages and disadvantages. Both methods give the expected ranking of the hydrophobicity for CuPb concentrate, Cu concentrate and Pb concentrate, but a discrepancy was observed for the feed. Washburn gave a value for the contact angle which was in the same range as for the CuPb concentrate, whereas DVS gave a value for the moisture uptake which was much higher than for the CuPb concentrate. Thus, DVS ranks all samples correctly, but with an unexpectedly high value for the feed whereas Washburn gives good ranking for three samples out of four. Potential reasons for the discrepancies are discussed.

"Sound Transit’s East Link Project, a $3.7 billion (2015 $), 14-mile light rail extension, will connect downtown Seattle with the rapidly developing east side cities of Bellevue and Redmond. Among the most technically challenging aspects of the Project is the 2,435 foot long Downtown Bellevue Tunnel (DBT), which will be constructed through the central core of Bellevue underneath 110th Avenue NE using a combination of Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM) and cut and cover tunneling. The 1,980 foot long central SEM component of the DBT will be mined at shallow depth through challenging and complex geology, comprised of glacially overconsolidated soils, containing both regional and perched groundwater conditions and in close proximity to existing high rise buildings. The paper shares lessons learned from the planning decisions and risk based approach to the investigation, design and procurement processes which shaped the DBT configuration and enabled a successful transition to the project’s construction stage. INTRODUCTION The East Link Project is a voter-approved $3.7 billion (2015 $), 14-mile extension of the existing Sound Transit (ST) light rail transit (LRT) system from downtown Seattle, across Lake Washington via I-90, to the cities of Bellevue and Redmond on the east side of Lake Washington. With targeted completion in 2023, East Link will provide riders with an efficient and reliable connection between the largest population and employment centers on the east side and downtown Seattle. The project alignment is indicated in Figure 1 below.ST completed the Preliminary Engineering (PE) phase of the East Link project in late 2011. Subsequently the final design contract for the easternmost seven miles of the project was awarded to the H-J-H Team, a joint venture comprised of HNTB, Jacobs Engineering and Hatch Mott MacDonald in February 2012. H-J-H’s final design scope includes approximately 7 miles of double-track LRT between the east end of the I-90 East Channel Bridge and the Overlake Transit Center Station. While the project scope is extensive and diverse, the focus of this paper is the DBT. The DBT is located immediately north of the East Main Station, and travels approximately one half mile through downtown Bellevue under 110th Avenue NE between Main Street and NE 6th Street; terminating at the Downtown Bellevue Transit Center (BTC) Station. The location and extent of the DBT is indicated in Figure 2."

What is the primary function of an impact assessment? Many people at the International Association of Impact Assessment?s (IAIA) annual conference said that it is time to return to the fundamentals and consider the underlying drivers of impact assessments ? human health, safety and security. This fall, managers struggling with those fundamentals will receive extra support when a new course focusing on health and socially responsible security is launched online and in British Columbia, Canada, home to many of the world?s junior miners. Now in its 33rd year, the IAIA conference recently held in Calgary, Canada, typically brings together a range of professionals who work in the impact assessment field, including academics, as well as people conducting applied disciplines, such as social and environmental performance management. It is a chance for people grappling with how to assess impacts from projects (for example, dams, mining and other extractive projects), to compare notes and to talk about developments in how to measure, track and report on them. The comments about returning to fundamentals rose as participants talked about the ongoing and increasingly recognized divergence between three main impact assessment streams: environmental, social and health (EIA, SIA and HIA, respectively). Discussions in sessions and in the corridors included calls for streamlining, for integration, for improvement and sharing of practice ? particularly in the HIA stream, where those deeply engaged in the health discipline questioned how HIAs and their intended outcome of protecting human health can be better integrated into the EIAs or SIAs that dominate the impact assessment realm. EIAs and SIAs have become the main tool, particularly from a permitting perspective for large-scale mines, but seem to leave projects with little real information about what they need to do. Human health is not the only concern re-emerging. Although not reflected at the conference, there appears to be an emerging understanding of the need to link the determinants of health with socially responsible security practices. Companies conducting independent social performance assessments for international financial institutions based on the International Finance Corporation?s Environmental and Social Performance Standards increasingly wrestle with both community health and security issues as extractive companies encounter challenging social environments around the world. Once again, the intended outcome is to better protect human health, including avoiding health impacts from conflict, abuses and violence.

We evaluated a new process for remediation of acid rock drainage (ARD). The process treats ARD with intermittently fluidized beds of granular limestone maintained within a continuous flow reactor pressurized with CO2. Tests were performed over a thirty day period at the Toby Creek mine drainage treatment plant, Elk County, Pennsylvania in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Equipment performance was established at operating pressures of 0,34,82, and 117 kPa using an ARD flow of 227 L/min. The ARD had the following characteristics: pH, 3.1; temperature, 10 OC; dissolved oxygen, 6.4 mg/L; acidity, 260 mg/5; total iron, 21 mg/L; aluminum, 22 mg/L; manganese, 7.5 mg/L; and conductivity, 1400 uS/cm. In all cases tested, processed ARD was net alkaline with mean pH and alkalinities of 6.7 and 59 mg/L at a CO2 pressure of 0 kPa, 6.6 and 158 mg/L at 34 kPa, 7.4 and 240 mg/L at 82 kPa, and 7.4 and 290 mg/L at 117 kPa Processed ARD alkalinities were correlated to the settled bed depth (p<0.001) and CO2 pressure (p<0.001). Iron, aluminum, and manganese removal efficiencies of 96%, 99%, and 5%, respectively, were achieved with filtration following treatment. No indications of metal hydroxide precipitation or armoring of the limestone were observed. The surplus alkalinity established at 82 kPa was successful in treating an equivalent of 1136 L/min (fivefold dilution) of the combined three ARD streams entering the Toby Creek Plant. This side-stream capability provides savings in treatment unit scale as well as flexibility in treatment effect. The capability of the system to handle higher influent acidity was tested by elevating the acidity to 5000 mg/L with sulfuric acid. Net alkaline effluent was produced, indicating applicability of the process to highly acidic ARD.

The Merlin project is situated 130 km south of Cloncurry in North West Queensland, Australia. It is located within the Pre-Cambrian Mt Isa Inlier and is grouped within the Eastern Fold Belt. The host rocks are metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Kuridala and Staveley Formations adjacent to the Mount Dore Granite.Merlin zone represents part of the Mount Dore polymetallic deposit containing copper, zinc, silver, gold, lead, cobalt and most recently has been found to host molybdenum mineralisation. This is intimately associated with economic grades of rhenium, a naturally occurring metal that is an important component of high temperature aircraft engines. The host rock sequence is a 200 m thick zone of metasediments sandwiched between competent granite in the hanging wall and brittle quartzite in the foot wall. A distinct shear marks the contact between the granite and metasediments. The host rocks are comprised of three main rock types: black shale, phyllite and altered banded calc-silicate.Mineralisation dips to the east at approximately 45&#176; in a package of fine grained pelites and banded calc-silicates. The top 150 m of the sequence is typified by black shale and phyllite. The lower 50 m is typified by pink banded calc-silicate. The main molybdenite zone is located at and parallel to the pelite-calc-silicate contact. Down dip, the zone splits into two or three veins hosted by the calc-silicate rock suite and haloed by thin, steep dipping, stylolitic molybdenite veinlets.The deposit was discovered in 2008 by routine infill reverse circulation sampling conducted for the Mount Dore copper deposit. One hole penetrated below the main target Cu horizon and intersected visible molybdenite. During 2009 and 2010 a 50 &#215; 50 m diamond drill pattern delineated a total mineral resource of 6.7 Mt @ 1.3 per cent Mo, 23g/t Re, 0.3 per cent Cu (mostly Indicated Mineral Resource with minor Inferred Mineral Resource). The resource has been estimated using ordinary kriging within grade domains. Access to the deposit has commenced via a decline and production through the nearby Osborne flotation concentrator (70 km south) is expected in 2012. All facilities and resources are fully owned and operated by Ivanhoe Australia Limited, a public listed company on the Australian and Toronto stock exchanges.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs.Resumen ¦ Se usó análisis Pareto para investigar la base de datos de fallas de una pala hidráulica Hitachi EX1900 durante un periodo de un año de operación continua. Se identificó al sistema hidráulico y a los enlaces hidráulicos, mangueras y tuberías como el sistema y subsistema más importantes, respectivamente. Se identificó una función de distribución de tres parámetros gamma como el más apto para un modelado de probabilidades del tiempo transcurrido entre las fallas (Tabes por sus siglas en inglés). Esta distribución fue usada en un análisis de confiabilidad Monte Carlo para un sistema hidráulico. El promedio de movimiento integrado auto-regresivo (ARIMA por sus siglas en inglés), dentro del contexto de análisis de serie temporal de los TBFs, fue propuesto como una alternativa viable a la tradicional técnica de ajuste de distribución. Se usó el porcentaje de la media absoluta de error (MAPE) para comparar los dos modelos. The health and financial costs of cumulative injuries are plaguing the mining industry. Industry leaders are concentrating on reducing the risk of injury to their workers through design and redesign of work environments. While ergonomics is not a currently regulated field, many mines are realizing that the only way to tackle their most costly injuries, cumulative injuries, is to make the proactive choice to understand those injuries, their root causes and to make workplace changes to prevent them from occurring. Reduction of these injuries not only improves the health and morale of the workers but increases productivity and profit for the companies. Knowledge and reporting of ergonomic risk factors by employees and ergonomics committees is key to these changes and to the reduction of cumulative injuries. NIOSH is developing strong relationships with industry associations and equipment manufacturers to leverage their communication abilities to transfer knowledge to their customers and make a difference in the health and safety of U.S. miners. The benefits of a formalized approach to reducing these injuries along with examples will be presented.

Several systems have been proposed for the production of synthetic crude oil from oil shale. An economic analysis of one proposed system is presented in this paper. An oil shale complex to produce 100,000 barrels per calendar day of semirefined crude oil will require a capital investment of $426,216,400. This investment includes mining, retorting, intermediate pipelining, and partial refining. A selling price of $3.74 per barrel of product will be necessary to maintain a discounted cash-flow rate of 12 percent.

Hydrologic and economic criteria figure in many obvious ways in water resources development, but they are rarely linked quantitatively, and most of the applications are pertinent only to the case-in-point. In the preparation of the Regional Plan for the massive program of ground water development in the Punjab, situations have arisen where the choice among two or more alternatives was made by analyzing the economic implications of critical hydrologic parameters. Two of these situations which are of more-or-less general interest are described herein. The first involves basic development policy -- whether ground water development should be based on the demand of the economy, or the conservation concept of safe-yield. The analysis demonstrated that mining of ground water is clearly indicated for areas where alternative supplies are unavailable. The second problem involves integrating hydrologic data into an economic model to determine optimum well design, From an analysis of all pertinent factors, a simple nomograph was derived which can be used to determine well specifications on-site during construction. The nomograph can be modified for use in any alluvial terrain.

The United States coal mining industry has traditionally experienced difficulty in controlling dust levels below the occupational exposure limit. While improvements in face ventilation and water spray nozzles have decreased dust exposures, approximately eight percent of experienced coal miners are still developing Coal Worker?s Pneumoconiosis. This investigation tested the feasibility of enhancing existing engineering dust controls by mounting a simple barrier on a longwall shearer that separated the operators from the cutting drums. The barrier was constructed and tested above ground at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Pittsburgh Research Laboratory longwall gallery test facility. A 96-percent reduction of respirable dust occurred at the headgate sampling position when tested at 2.4 m/sec (480 ft/min). The average dust level decreased from 39 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 by utilizing the barrier.

O desenvolvimento deste trabalho refere-se ao estudo da resistência à adesão de camadas aspergidas termicamente e a quantificação, análise e a influência da presença de poros na microdureza, rugosidade e resistência ao desgaste das camadas produzidas. O método de aplicação das camadas produzidas por aspersão térmica foi o HVOF (High Velocity Oxi-Fuel) em substrato de aço SAE 1020. Observou-se que a composição química da camada produzida por aspersão térmica influenciou significativamente na dureza e resistência ao desgaste dos materiais estudados. Percebeu-se que a rugosidade variou de acordo com a preparação superficial do substrato e que a resistência à adesão foi maior para os materiais que possuem maior dureza. A porosidade não influenciou a resistência à adesão das camadas aspergidas.

"The Bui/moose Mine is in the northeast coal area of British Columbia, and less than $300 million was spent to bring this 2.3 million-tonnes-per-year metallurgical and thermal coal mine into production by November 1, 1983, one month ahead of schedule. The project is an unincorporated joint venture undertaking, with Teck-Bullmoose Coal Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Teck Corporation, holding 51%, Lornex Mining Corporation holding 39%, and Nissho-lwai (Canada) Ltd. holding 10%. Bullmoose Operating Corporation will be the manager and operator of the project. This paper will broadly cover the history and exploration work on the property, the geology, open-pit mining plans and equipment, the preparation plant flowsheet from breaker station to clean coal silo, the 35 km highway truck haul, the railroad loadout system, manpower requirements, approvals and permits, and general financial arrangements. Introduction The Bullmoose Mine Project is located about 87 km by road south of Chetwynd, B.C. and consists of an open-pit coal mine, a plant facility in the Bullmoose Creek valley below the mine, and a separate rail loadout facility on the British Columbia Railway Branchline near the new town of Tumbler Ridge some 35 km by road to the east. The plant will be capable of producing a total of 2.3 million tonnes per year (mty) of washed metallurgical and thermal coal. Long-term metallurgical coal contracts for high-quality, medium-volatile, bituminous coal have been signed with nine Japanese buyers for 1.7 mty, and the balance of0.6 mty will be for thermal coal production. Plant construction began in the spring of 1982, and in May 1983, preproduction waste and overburden removal in the mine was started. The plant began tuning up in October and was fully operational by December 1983. Metallurgical coal began moving to the coast in unit trains during November, and first vessel loading at the Ridley Island port began in late December 1983."

This paper deals with the role of the Maintenance Department in a milling operation; specifically, the Mines Development, Inc., processing plant at Edgement, South Dakota. The goal of very maintenance department is the smooth and uninterrupted operation of the plant it serves, To achieve this goal, maintenance men adapt various features and procedures into a program designed to fit the characteristics of their particular plant operation. A few of the basic elements of a sound maintenance program are: 1, A periodic preventive maintenance schedule. 2, A systematic inspection and lubrication procedure. 3. A training program for maintenance personnel. 4 A good equipment-history file system, 5. A carefully planned spare parts inventory.

AngloGold Ashanti operates the world`s deepest mine, Mponeng gold mine, in South Africa. A vast refrigeration and ventilation system provides acceptable working conditions 3800m below surface at 60°C rock temperature. In such a system, optimisation and assessment of modifications becomes very difficult. With that in mind, a research project was launched to determine whether recently developed system simulation technology can be applied to a mine as vast and complex as Mponeng. Using the techniques and methods as implemented in FLOWNEX software, it was indeed proven to be possible to do a mine-wide combined simulation of compressed air flow, ventilation air psychrometry and refrigeration water systems. Interactions between the various streams included heat transfer, pressure drop, evaporation and condensation. The simulation model was used in a parametric study to test various water flow and temperature operating points for the refrigeration system. It was found that, given current limitations, the mine refrigeration system is running fairly close to optimal but with some opportunities for improvement. The simulation model also provided useful insight for future changes or extensions to the system.

Discovered in 2014, the Arrow Uranium Deposit has undergone rapid development through successive drilling programs informed by geostatistical drill hole spacing studies. An independent third-party geostatistical drill hole spacing study was completed by Clayton V. Deutsch Consultants Inc. in 2017, evaluating the uncertainty of thickness, grade, density, and areal limit of the Arrow Deposit to determine a drill hole spacing suitable for Indicated Mineral Resources. Indicated spacing was defined to be 24 to 32 metres (“m”) to be within 15% of predicted for a nominal quarterly production volume with a probabilistic tolerance between 75 and 90%. The study not only defined the Indicated Mineral Resource resultant from the 2016 drill program, but also provided drill hole targeting criteria for subsequent drill programs aiming to convert Inferred to Indicated Mineral Resources. A subsequent geostatistical drill hole spacing study on the Arrow Deposit was completed by Clayton V. Deutsch with Resource Modeling Solutions in December 2018 to define Measured Mineral Resource spacing in support of the 2019 drill campaign. The study resulted in a drill hole spacing of 9 to 17 m to be within 15% of predicted for monthly and quarterly production volumes using an accepted industry probabilistic tolerance of 90%.

"In the current work, factors influencing the corrosion mechanisms of TiC and Ti(C,N) based cermets are reviewed. Cermets were typically prepared with 30 vol.% of metal binder, in the form of various in-situ reaction-formed Ni3Al alloys. Commercial WC-Co hardmetals were also examined as baseline materials. The assessment of corrosion involved a variety of electrochemical measurements, including open circuit potential and potentiodynamic polarisation. The corrosion potential and current density were determined, following Tafel extrapolation, allowing estimation of the corrosion rates. Post-corrosion characterisation involved scanning electron microscopy analysis and associated energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy of the sample surfaces. It is demonstrated that the primary corrosion mechanism for this type of cermet is dissolution of the metallic phase during oxidation attack, and thus this response can be expected to increase with the amount of binder in the cermet, although degradation can be subtly affected by composition (i.e. alloy composition, C:N ratio, impurities in the ceramic phase, etc.) and test procedure (i.e. aerated vs. de-aerated electrolytes). It was observed that addition of N content into the ceramic phase is beneficial to the corrosion characteristics of TiC based cermets, through significant refinement in the grain size of the hard phase. Similarly, elimination of impurities, such as W in selected TiC powders, also improves the corrosion resistance.INTRODUCTION Cermets are prepared using the combination of a hard, high elastic modulus ceramic phase with a ductile, high toughness metallic binder. This pairing of hard and ductile components ensures wide application of cermets in demanding wear environments. These materials are consequently used industrially in both bulk and coating form. The most common example of such a composite system is based on the use of tungsten carbide with a cobalt-based binder (WC-Co), which has been widely examined over the past 80 years. However, while WC-Co has been shown to exhibit an excellent combination of high strength and wear resistance, the corrosion and high temperature properties of this material are relatively poor. In addition, WC-Co possesses a high density (~13–14 g/cm3), which makes it a less desirable option when the component mass is a design factor (i.e. use in aerospace). In particular, the aqueous corrosion response of WC-Co limits its use in wear environments where combined corrosive degradation may occur (i.e. tribo-corrosion scenarios). Alternate cermet systems are therefore being actively developed due to these performance limitations."
