Electrolytic cells are used in electrowinning (EW) and electrorefining (ER) of non-ferrous metals such as zinc and copper, and are a critical part of the purification process. The cell is a large basin and has an electrolyte or aqueous solution, an anode and a cathode, an insulator, and incoming high amperage. Cells are exposed to unfavourable internal and external factors that have a direct impact on their lifespan. Their deterioration can be caused by incorrect polarity, insufficient magnitude, their construction, tension stress, thermal shock, corrosion and other, and their maintenance and replacement can be time-consuming, costly, difficult and environmentally unsafe. Occupational health hazards and dangers posed by the maintenance and removal of the cell should also be taken into consideration. Modifying the design and fabrication method of the cell, using chemical-resistant reinforcement, and increasing tensile and mechanical strength will defer maintenance for a very long time. This can be achieved by a double hull system that comprises full-length composite reinforcement, polymer concrete reinforced with fiberglass pultruded rods and rebars, fiberglass structural layers, and special resin matrices. This will provide protection against thermal shocks, corrosion, leakage, cracks. The design of this cell incorporates a lifting system that will afford quick and easy install without having to move a great number of cells in close proximity, since it is strong enough to stand on its own and not have to be bonded to adjacent cells. As well, the cell can be anchored with ease as it remains stable. This is especially important because space is limited to lift and manoeuver between the cell and the double-girder overhead travelling cranes. The lifting system can also prevent electrocution and loss in product quality, while increasing efficiency and safety in the workplace. Considerable savings in terms of production downtime are also part of the equation. INTRODUCTION Maintenance and replacement of electrolytic cells in electrowinning and electrorefining are operations that pose many challenges, health and safety concerns, and give rise to substantial operational costs. These problems have existed since time immemorial. Electrolytic cells are made of conventional concrete or polymer concrete, and because of the very nature of their composition and their exposure to severe and environmental conditions, their lifespan is short. Although polymer concrete is composed of high-quality materials, and has good thermal stability and resistance to chemicals, nonetheless, maintenance is frequently required in order to maintain the integrity of the cell and to ensure the quality of refined metals. Repairing concrete is a non-permanent solution as cracks will reappear, and every repair weakens the integrity of the cell a bit more, until it reaches a knock- down point and the structure is compromised. The cell needs to be replaced, otherwise the cell will collapse.

Contract H0242013 was originally to evaluate through underground tests, water spray systems for controlling respirable dust at the face of a longwall plow. A number of difficulties were encountered which made such an evaluation impractical. The contract was modified to evaluate, in the BCR dust tunnel facility, the live factors believed to affect respirable dust levels. A 60-foot long; plow face mock-up was constructed in the dust tunnel, a facility with controlled airflow and dust concentration. Six types of nozzles were tested with the following parameters: two nozzle orientations, two levels of water pressure, two levels of airflow, and with and without simulated airflow through the gob. Of these factors, the most significant in reducing respirable dust levels was nozzle orientation, where the nozzle directed 45 degrees downstream resulted in 27 percent lower dust levels than those directed 45 degrees upstream (against the airflow). Following in order of effectiveness were the higher water pressure and the lower airflow. All nozzles tested resulted in similar dust reduction, i.e., the type of nozzle was the least significant factor.

Dense medium cyclones have been in use for washing coarse and small coals for more than 50 years. There have been modifications in its design and today these units have become indispensable for washing of Indian coals possessing difficult washing characteristics. About 53 percent of the Indian coals (coking and non-coking) are being washed in jigs, about 38 per cent are washed in dense medium cyclones while the remaining 9 per cent is treated in other units like Barrel Washers, Heavy Media Baths and Drum Separators etc. The present paper deals with the attempts made for design of industrial Dense Medium Cyclones for enhanced coal recovery. Two industrial units of 500 mm diameter and 650 mm diameter were designed with their washing capacities being 200 m3/hr and 350 m3/hr, respectively. The results of the pilot tests conducted on 500 mm cyclone treating very high Near Gravity Material coals crushed to -3.0+0.5 mm gave an ash reduction of up to 19.5 percent with the new design i.e., from a feed ash of 34.5 percent to 15.06 percent in clean coal with an appreciable yield of 45 percent in one stage.

"Two test blasts were conducted at the Sanford Underground Research Facility to establish optimum blast designs and to limit blast effects on existing research rooms and equipment in preparation for the largest deep underground excavation in North America. Located on the 4850 Level (4,850 ft below the surface)at the former Homestake Mine in Lead, SD, this excavation is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’sLong-Baseline Neutrino Facility that will house particle detectors for the international Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment hosted by Fermilab. A large array of seismographs was deployedthroughout the 4850 Level to measure ground vibrations and airblast pressures in tunnel drifts and in lab spaces."

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) continues to be a concern of the mining industry. A new noise standard (30 CFR, Part 62) is aimed at reducing NIHL in mining through engineering and administrative noise controls. However, the difficulty and expense of implementing engineering controls can make administrative controls an attractive alternative for reducing worker noise exposure. Over the last three years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted worker noise exposure surveys in underground and surface coal mines and in coal preparation plants. The surveys revealed numerous possible administrative controls and an approach to implementation and analysis. The surveys have shown that worker dosimetry, time-motion studies and equipment noise profiling are important aspects of effectively utilizing administrative controls. A description of the approach for selecting, implementing and evaluating administrative controls and a list of possible administrative controls are reported.

Electric logs and cuttings records from Zechstein 3 and 4 strata in boreholes in the British Sector of have been interpreted in the light of numerous cored boreholes through this sequence in north-east England. This interpretation shows that potash salts in the two cycles are thickest and most consistent in a belt 20 to 40 km wide parallel with and a few kilometres from the present basin margin, and are here generally similar in grade to those known onshore. The potash ores in both cycles are mainly of sylvinite in onshore areas, the layered Upper the Southern North Sea Potash of the fourth cycle being rather less variable but generally of appreciably lower average grade than the Boulby Potash of the third cycle. Potash salts in both cycles are highly variable in thickness and grade in basin centre areas where they have been grossly affected by diapirism of the thick second cycle salts.

Starting-- from Cu-Si diffusion couples a study of diffusion in the intermetallic compound Cu3Si of the Cu-Si system has been made. Mmker experiments showed copper to be the diffusing element. From the rate of growth of the Cu3Si phase diffusion coefficients were derived. The activation energy for diffusion is 18.6 kcal per mole. The couples show some interesting microscopic features, for which a tentative explanation is given. THE synthesis of dimethyldichlorosilane, (CH3)2SiC12, an important compound in the manufacture of methyl-silicones, takes place at the surface of a thin Cu3Si layer deposited on a mass of silicon particles."' By passing CH3C1 vapor at about 350°C, silicon atoms are consumed from Cu3Si in forming the volatile silane molecules, thus leaving copper atoms at the surface. It is well-known that copper acts as a poison for the above-mentioned reaction by catalyzing the dissociation of methylchloride.' However, no poisonous effect is observed, at least not before most of the silicon from the particles is converted into silane.3 This would be understandable, if either the copper atoms diffuse through the Cu3Si deposit to the underlying silicon or silicon atoms diffuse in the reverse direction to the copper, both processes resulting in the formation of new Cu3Si and so ensuring the proceeding of the reaction. In this paper experiments are described, demonstrating copper to be the diffusing element. Also a very low activation energy for the diffusion is observed. EXPERIMENTAL The silicon used contained 1 ppm Mg and 1 ppm Cu; the copper was spectroscopically pure (Fe: 2 ppm; Ag, Mg, Si: 1 ppm). The copper and silicon samples were prepared in the form of blocks of approximately 10 by 10 by 5 mm with two parallel sides by spark-machining. The blocks were ground on emery paper (grit 600), etched (copper with nitric acid, silicon with a 4:l nitric acid:hydrofluoric acid mixture), and cleaned with alcohol. As the brittleness of the silicon did not allow a welding procedure to prepare the diffusion couples, the copper and silicon blocks were pressed together in a steel clamp. The pressure exerted by the clamp brought about contact between the parts of the couple and so ensured proceeding of the diffusion. The couples were heated in a vacuum furnace (about 10"5 Torr). The temperature was stabilized within 1 pct. After a heat treatment a section parallel to the direction of diffusion was examined in the microscope and in the X-ray scanning microanalyzer. To determine whether copper or silicon is the diffusing element marker experiments were carried out using tungsten wires with a 20-p diam. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 give micrographs of diffusion zones of Cu/Si couples. Analysis by the electron mi-croprobe of the Cu/Si samples after a definite heat treatment revealed the existence of only one intermetallic phase as can be seen from the line scan shown in Fig. 5. From the X-ray diffraction pattern it could be deduced that this phase was CU 3 Si.4 Even when diffusion zones of considerable width (up to 600 p) were obtained, no other phases occurring in the Cu-Si system could be detected, neither by the electron microprobe nor by X-ray diffraction analysis. O trabalho apresenta as etapas e resultados obtidos através do projeto de adequação da iluminação de Usinas de Pelotização da VALE no Complexo de Tubarão em Vitória - Brasil utilizando tecnologia LED (Light Emitting Diode). Foi elaborado um estudo luminotécnico das usinas, assim como levantamento in loco para elaboração do projeto de adequação e substituição das luminárias LED. Houve também um estudo da tecnologia e busca por tipos de luminárias que melhor atenderiam cada área especificamente. Foram feitas medições de potência instalada e iluminância das principais áreas das usinas para posterior comparação com os resultados alcançados. Nas áreas onde a tecnologia LED já foi implantada foi obtida uma redução de 45% em média no consumo de energia elétrica do sistema de iluminação. Verificou-se também um incremento de até 11 vezes no nível de iluminância além da redução das intervenções por parte da manutenção para substituição e/ou melhora da iluminação. A viabilidade da utilização da tecnologia LED foi confirmada pela redução de custo com energia elétrica, redução de manutenção do sistema de iluminação e aumento da iluminância na área com o consequente aumento de segurança no trânsito de pessoas e execução de atividades.

The planning and development of new coal mines is requiring the increased use of geologic, geologic engineering and hydrogeologic investigations. This is caused in part by the fact that new mines must deal with less favorable conditions than existing mines as well as higher costs of development and in part by the dictates of regulatory authority. High costs of new mines require greater reliability of geologic assessment using best available geotechnical and geophysical methods and technology. Although the increased cost of additional subsurface data is significant, the more important factor may be the impact on project lead time.

In India, despite its natural abundance, demand for coal exceeds its countrywide supply due to failure to achieve high production targets, especially in opencast mines, which are responsible for 94.98 percent of total raw coal production in the country. Employment of technological solutions, such as surface miners, is key to achieving higher coal production and productivity in an environmentally friendly manner, especially in populated areas adjacent to the mining zone. This technology eliminates blast hole drilling, blasting and primary crushing units, thus reducing related environmental hazards like ground vibration and fly rocks.

Introduction To discuss all the technical details of incorporation laws, security laws, underwriting procedures, codes, and ethics-as laid down by varous associations -would be impossible in the time which has been allotted to me. My remarks, therefore, will be made in a very general way and will naturally be coloured with experiences which my firm and I have had. There is a common expression that "money makes the mare go". I hardly have to mention here that the best prospect in the country is of very little value unless its prospects can be developed-and this requires large capital expenditures. The art and problems surrounding the raising of this money is a long and interesting story. Since by its very nature mining is risky, the appraising of its risks in the many phases of its development programme is continuous. Very few men-if any-and very few corporations -if any -can afford to take all the risk of mining. Because of taxation policies-and the very scheme of present-day living -the truth of this statement can be seen throughout the whole industry by a close examination of the records. Since this is so, it is essential that the mechanics of distributing risk on a sound, and equitable basis be known to those engaged in the business and to the investor or spectator who proposes to risk his funds in the industry. Perhaps the greatest stimulant to modern business activities has been the creation of corporate bodies. It is evident, from the number of charters being granted by various jurisdictions, that this method of doing business is becoming more and more important. A limited company -or corporation-can be defined as a fictitious person existing solely in contemplation of the law.

"Underground refuge alternatives require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the refuge alternative. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that pressure relief valves prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a variety of pressure relief valves using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork and various sensors to determine if the subject pressure relief valves meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics, including opening pressure and flow rate, were measured for five different pressure relief valves under a variety of conditions. The subject pressure relief valves included two off-theshelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place refuge alternatives, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel refuge alternative and is currently being used in some built-in-place refuge alternatives. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.03 to 0.22 psi) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/ min (683 scfm). As tested, some of the pressure relief valves did not meet the 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi) relief specification.IntroductionThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the United States in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA, 2006). Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency refuge alternatives and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such refuge alternatives can be either self-contained mobile units or built-inplace facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for MSHA approval of refuge alternatives and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the refuge alternatives. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe refuge alternative atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure, in the refuge alternative, as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor (MSHA, 2008)."

A brief review is given to show that catastrophic oxidation of stainless steel in the presence of lead oxide is similar in many respects to catastrophic oxidation as caused by MoO3 and V2O5, Experimental data are presented to show that lead oxide accelerates the normal oxidation process of stainless steel by chemically altering the normally protective oxide film formed on the base metal. Data are given to show that similar reactions occur during oxidation of stainless steel in the presence of MOO3,and V2O5. THE mechanism by which pure metals oxidize at high temperatures has been the subject of intensive research for many years and much has been accomplished towards understanding the processes involved. The mechanisms by which alloys oxidize have also been investigated, but due partly to the fewer number of investigations and partly to the complexity of the oxide systems present, available knowledge is not as extensive as with pure metals. When oxidation processes are further complicated by atmospheres contaminated with sulfide, halide, or oxide vapors, the knowledge of fundamentals becomes meager or altogether lacking. Thus, it is not surprising to find that the catastrophic oxidation of stainless steels in metal oxide vapors of MOO, and V2O5 is not a well understood phenomenon despite the fact that a number of investigations have been undertaken. The literature in dealing with the subject of catastrophic oxidation is primarily concerned with the effects of MOO3 and V2O5, but does mention that other metal oxide vapors, one of which is lead oxide, appear to promote a similar type of accelerated oxidation. While this latter effect is virtually unknown, the deleterious effect of lead oxide is of considerable commercial importance, as it is believed to be one of the fundamental reasons for exhaust-valve failure in gasoline engines. For this reason studies have been in progress for many years attempting to better understand the mechanism involved. Modern exhaust-valve alloys"2containing 20 to 25 pct Cr plus nickel and/or manganese are in effect high-grade austenitic stainless steels exhibiting ex- cellent oxidation resistance in air at exhaust valve operating temperatures of 1100° to 1700°F; yet these same alloys are prone to corrode during engine service because of the conditions attending their operation. These conditions are such that the valves become coated with deposits of complex lead compounds mainly derived from gasoline additives of tetraethyllead, ethylene dibromide, and ethylene dichloride. Literature searches3-7 and discussions with various investigators show that considerable difference of opinion exists as to the nature of the lead-bearing deposits found on the surface of exhaust valves and the atmospheres to which they are subjected; yet, all seem to generally agree that corrosion, a gradual transformation of alloy to nonmetallic products of corrosion, is a consequence of the presence of lead compounds. This majority opinion seems to be substantiated by laboratory engine tests which show that corrosion does not occur to any appreciable extent when lead-free fuels are used. The first observations of catastrophic oxidation reported in the literature were probably made by pfeil,8 but it was Leslie and Fontana9 who undertook the first detailed study of the phenomenon. Their work was chiefly centered on the acceleration of oxidation which took place when stainless steels containing more than 3 pct Mo were heated in air with restricted circulation. These investigators reported that the presence of other oxides near the surface would further accelerate the rapid oxidation which occurred. While they recognized that the effect was attributable to the presence of molybdenum, it was Rathenau and Meijering" who emphasized the fact that the presence of molybdenum in the alloy was incidental to the presence of MOO3 vapor in the atmosphere surrounding the specimens. Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic heavy metal, soluble over a wide pH range. Tl levels may exceed discharge limits in mining-influenced water associated with processing gold, lead, cadmium, zinc, and copper ores. In this work, the effect of sodium permanganate (CARUSOL® C liquid permanganate) on Tl removal from mining wastewater was studied. Factors influencing Tl removal, namely permanganate dosage/demand, coagulant and flocculant use, order of chemical addition, and co-existing metal ions were examined. The results show that permanganate addition is very effective at removing Tl to below target limits and can provide a unique solution for improving wastewater quality and optimizing overall treatment costs. In addition, several on-line monitoring techniques were evaluated for process optimization. The Hach DPD Free Chlorine method was optimal, allowing plant operators to rapidly and easily spot check effluent samples for excess permanganate dose.

The mining industry has always been cost-focussed but in recent times mining companies have moved towards obtaining a competitive advantage through the implementation and sustainability of best practice in the areas of improved safety, operating costs, quality and productivity. This is the concept of Value In Use û that mining companies see value generated all the way to the bottom line through improved change, and those changes become an established mine practice. Many mining companies do not have the resources or the knowledge to sustainably achieve such an outcome. This has led to companies looking to their suppliers to deliver measured value to their business through partnership arrangements. Suppliers have been able to leverage their knowledge of products, product applications and services to offer alternative supply agreements that bring greater returns to their businesses while improving supplier/client relationships. Orica has developed such a partnership with Coal & Allied in the form of a Continuous Improvement Program. Coal & Allied is based in the Hunter Valley region of NSW and is the largest coal producer in that region. Both parties are contractually bound to jointly deliver Value In Use projects to Coal & AlliedÆs Hunter Valley Operations and Bengalla mine sites. It is the request of the Orica and Coal & Allied Steering Committees that this paper does not include the details of actual projects or the costs or key performance indicators associated with the program. This is to maintain the competitive advantage to both Orica and Coal & Allied through the implementation of such a program. It is in the writersÆ opinion that this paper does not lose any significance through this restriction as the most important component of the Continuous Improvement Program is not the projects themselves but the methodology behind them. With this in mind the paper will discuss the development of Value In Use offerings, the key aspects of the Coal & Allied and Orica joint program, what is a Value In Use project, how to measure its value, finally why and even more importantly what makes this program is a success.

"A 4-ft.-diameter shaft has been drilled to a depth of 2,790 ft. in strong, hard, basic Precambrian rocks at Lynn Lake Manitoba. This was done on the property of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited for the purpose of ventilating and developing the ""N"" orebody, which is located approximately 4,000 ft. south of the Farley shaft.The drilling was done under contract by two drilling companies. Peter Bawden Drilling (1964) Limited drilled the initial 12:1,4-in. pilot hole to a depth of 3,000 ft. Shaft Drillers Limited of Canada then reamed the hole to 4 ft. in diameter to a depth of 2,790 ft. At this point, the reaming was stopped because of the difficulty in passing a change in direction in the line of the pilot hole. The hole was completed by driving a raise 200 ft. from the 3000 level to the bottom of the 4-ft. hole using an Alimak raise climber.Cuttings from the reaming operation were directed into the 12:1,4-in. pilot hole, where they fell to the 3000 level and were removed by a mucking machine and standard mine development cars.The elapsed time from the start of the pilot hole to the completion of the reaming operation was ten months, with an average advance of 279ft. per month. There was a two-month delay between the completion of the pilot hole and the start of the reaming operation.The 12:1,4-in. hole was drilled in an elapsed time of 45 days from the time of setting up the rig. The average advance per day was 66.8 ft.The reaming operation was done in an elapsed time of 194 days. A one-month delay required to repair damaged equipment left 163 days for the drilling and setting-up operation, for an advance per day of 17.1 ft."

The application of new technologies, methodologies, and the use of new products in mining operations is a practice that is becoming more common in the industry every day, added to the new challenges and restrictions found in the operation. In the city of Tierra Amarilla, the interaction between mining operations and the community presents a constant challenge given the proximity to the community and the limitations that this presents. Explosive charge mass, in conventional blasting using traditional explosives (ANFOs, packaged explosives for example) limits the explosive charge lengths (they are reduced), impacting the explosive charge productivity. To improve the productivity of explosive charge and fragmentation, the use of low-density explosives was proposed, allowing the increase of the explosive charge length, trying to maintain the vibration levels within the established limits (2mm/s), preserving the fragmentation of the rock in the required sizes. The present study shows the results obtained from the application of low-density bulk emulsion for production blasting charges using upward and downward fan drillings. During this process, 18 blasting events were carried out, of which 8 were Up-hole loading (average density of 0.75 gr/cc) and 10 with Down-Hole loading (average density of 0.95 gr/cc). In summary, a total of 110,760 tons of ore have been broken, using low density emulsion, meeting the proposed objectives such as: 33% reduction of vibrations, 12% overbreak (within the theoretical design), P80 of 11in and 4.6% in fines.

This report describes the feasibility of predicting percussive drilling rates by equations derived from statistical regression analysis. The least squares statistical method was used and the analysis was performed both by direct and by stepwise linear regression analysis. The predicted penetration rate is a function of the drill power and the physical properties of the rocks penetrated. The results show promise that the technique may be of value in providing a mathematical model by which percussive drill manufacturers and users can predict the performance of a given drill. Experimental work involved two mining type percussive drills. Penetration data for these drills were determined from nine rocks drilled in the laboratory. Drill work rates (power) were determined in a separate series of experiments. Rock physical properties were measured from diamond-drill core samples taken from the same blocks used for percussive drilling.
