"Electrical disintegration (ED) has been well known as a good comminution method to improve liberation of compositional phases because it was reported that electron avalanche could occur preferentially at phase boundary. But the detailed mechanism of the ED has been still not known. This paper describes the results of ED experiments using synthetic binary sample, copper/resin, under the conditions of various distance between electrodes, and discusses the energy distribution in the three kinds of phenomena in the ED process, which are(1) streamer progression in water, (2) electron avalanche in water, and (3) electron avalanche in solid sample, by measuring current and voltage with elapsed time. Then, it has been found that the energy distribution in the phenomenon (1) is quite low and that the distribution in the phenomenon(2) had a considerably large compared with that in the(3), which indicates that the shockwave generated in water could contribute much to the sample breakage.INTRODUCTIONElectrical disintegration (ED) has been well known as a specific comminution technology which enhanced selective breakage at phase boundary and lead to a good liberation among compositional phases1-6),but the detailed mechanism has not been clarified yet. "Comminution represents a significant part of mineral processing plant operating costs. Yet, autogenous (AG) or semi-autogenous grinding mills (SAG) are difficult to control because of disturbances like feed size distribution and rock hardness. AMIRA, within project GeMIII, developed a comminution index from laboratory crusher data. The index correlated with the Bond ball mill work index and with the A×b parameter. The present work extends the use of crusher data as a grindability indicator to real-time industrial applications. The aim is to improve comminution operation using online hardness estimation. Because the operational work index is proportional to the ore work index, rock hardness variations can be estimated from the feed and product size distributions, the throughput, and the power draw of a crusher. Real-time estimation of rock hardness can help understand the dynamic behavior of AG and SAG mills. Multivariate time series were analyzed to understand the impact of hardness on a SAG operation. Results showed that the estimated hardness influences the SAG operation and its throughput. Moreover, non-linear dimension reduction was used to ease the process visualisation and search for potential control strategies. In the future, online hardness measurements should also impact the understanding of comminution circuits and improve their operation.INTRODUCTIONThe variability in hardness, and the feed size distribution, are two of the main disturbances affecting comminution circuits (Sbarbaro & del Vilar, 2010). Size distribution can be measured by imagebased granulometry systems such as WipFrag (Maerz, Palangio, & Franklin, 1996), or by 3D vision systems when the fines are difficult to discriminate by 2D segmentation (Faucher, Makni, Gagnon, Lavoie, & Roberge, 2015).There are few examples of online hardness measurements. One example was the work of Casali et al. (2001) who developed a hardness indicator. The ore grindability soft sensor used the fraction of each lithological class in the ore, as determined by image analysis, to predict the work index of the material. The model was developed using a moving window with a width of 12 months and trends were shown over many years with one data point per month."

In this paper, the structure, morphology, chemical composition and leaching of naumannite ( Ag2Se) were studied. Mechanical activation of Ag2Se in a planetary ball mill resulted in increasing its specific surface area. The influence of milling time on the particle size was studied by particle size distribution analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The leaching kinetics of non-activated and mechanically activated samples in 3.5–7.9 mol/L HNO3 solutions were examined. Subsequently, the effect of leaching temperature in the range of 25–50°C on the recovery of silver from mechanically activated naumannite was documented. The maximum yield of silver 94% was achieved after 120 min of leaching in 7.9 mol/L HNO3 at 50°C for the sample mechanically activated for 30 min. Based on calculated activation energy values from the Arrhenius equation, a mixed leaching mechanism consisting of diffusion and surface chemical reaction as the rate-controlling steps of the solidliquid reaction was assessed.

The Montreal metro Blue Line Extension toward the northeast consists of the construction of five new underground stations. The project includes 6 kilometers of the tunnel which will be constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). In line with the commitment to integrating sustainability best practices, Envision verification is pursued this project. The Envision reference framework was developed to cover all the sustainable development aspects of an infrastructure project and each phase of its life cycle (planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance, and end-of-life). As a part of this endeavor, low-carbon concrete and shotcrete mixtures are proposed for the linings of TBM and SEM tunnels as well as stations and auxiliary structures. The CO2 emission of the low-carbon concrete and shotcrete mixtures were compared with their typical mixtures and the total CO2 emissions reduction related to the tunnel lining is determined. The study is of strategic significance for achieving emission reduction in the tunnel industry.

During the summer of 1916, while on a visit to the United States Agricultural Experiment Station at Mayaguez, Porto Rico, the writers were told by D. W. May, the director, that an occurrence of manganese ore had been reported from the mesa southeast of Mayaguez. A visit to the locality showed that the mesa is covered by a mantle of bright red soil resting upon serpentine. Here and there over its surface concretionary masses of limonite have been mashed out of this soil. These were apparently mistaken for manganese ore. On account of the similarity of this occurrence to the extensive iron deposits of northeastern Cuba, it was thought that a brief description based upon a two days'reconnaissance survey of the area mould be of scientific interest. Mayaguez is on the west coast of Porto Rico, at Mayaguez Bay, which is the third in importance of the harbors of the island. A study of specimens shows that the key to both oxidation and enrichment at Duck-town is the behavior of pyrrhotite, which is in part dissolved and in part replaced by marcasite. Enrichment takes place chiefly at the expense of marcasite. THE material that forms the basis of this paper was collected in the spring of 1922, during a ten-day visit to Ducktown by the writer in the company of Prof. L. C. Graton. The time available for the work was far too short to allow anything like a thorough study of the deposits, and structural and stratigraphic questions, though they have an important bearing on the origin of the primary ores, were necessarily left untouched. Attention was focussed on the zone of oxidation and enrichment; and by devoting most of our time to the upper levels, open pits, and old workings, and examining the deeper levels only thoroughly enough to obtain a fair idea of the nature of the primary sulfide ore, we were able to make a reasonably complete survey of the various orebodies. With this field work for a background, the writer later made a study, in the Harvard laboratories, of the specimens obtained during the visit. As some of the facts brought to light by this study appear to be new, it seems worth while to set forth the outstanding features and a proposed explanation of them. Much of the Ducktown material that is obviously of greatest significance, as regards oxidation and enrichment, is soft and crumbly. Notwithstanding the desirability of gaining from such material all possible information as to its mineral composition and textural relationships, but little has heretofore been learned regarding it; but, by suitable preparation of this material in connection with the present study, it has been possible to examine it under the microscope without any disturbance of its texture and about as satisfactorily as if it were hard, fresh ore. The information thus gained has contributed measurably to the results set forth in this paper.

The wire saw, introduced by the Bureau of Mines about two years ago, has revolutionized slate quarrying in Pennsylvania. The success of the saw since its early accomplishments has become greater and greater as the equipment has been perfected and skill acquired .in its use. In the first test made, a cutting rate of 9.7 square feet per hour was attained; in the next four cuts, made early in 1927, the average rate of cutting was increased to 12.8 square feet per hour; in 1928 a maximum of 34 square feet per hour had been attained, with a general average of about 20 to 25 square feet, The wire saw is now regarded as essential equipment in practically all of the quarries in the Bangor, Pen Argyl, and Windgap districts. The wire saw consists of a three-strand steel cable of 3/16 or 1/4 inch diameter running as an endless belt. The driving pulley is a 40-inch double-groove cast-iron sheave. A tension pulley supported by a frame mounted on wheels may travel back and forth on a short track. A weight of 800 to 2,000 pounds gives the desired tension on the wire. The driving units consist of electric motors with direct-drive compactly enclosed gear reduction, or double-belt speed-reduction units; the former is preferred. Silent chain and. pinion gear reductions are used to a limited extent. The travelling speed of the wire is about 15 feet per second. The driving and tension equipment are shown in Figure 1, A.

The so called quality related cost, which include also rework, cost for downgrading or even scabbing of material is already a remarkable lever in a plants profitability breakdown. The introduction of advanced state of the art grades in the product portfolio requires already a budgeting for the expenses for R&D and quality management. PQA has been developed as a process and quality management software solution next to existing level 2 or level 3 automation systems. It is focusing on the analysis of process data, equipment information, in line quality measurement devices and trend analysis to obtain an answer whether the process is according to definition and expectation and whether the intermediate or final product can be shipped for further processing as prime material. Advanced analytics which are linked to an expert know how based configuration identifies deficiencies in the production and processing process. An intelligent, state of the art quality rating system evaluates tolerable deviations. PQA comprises the software platform including the database, data configurator and collector from the different sources in the production process and units. The core element of the platform is the knowledge based expert know how package defining process and quality determining fundamentals. The paper describes the structure of the software package, it gives insights on the expert know how package, process and quality evaluation and points out the customer benefits, cost reduction, improvement yield, customer satisfaction increase. The White Pine Copper Company, subsidiary of Copper Range Company, is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The offices, plant, and mine are six miles south of Lake Superior in Ontonagon County. Employing 1700 people, White Pine is the largest single industry in the Upper Peninsula. 970 underground employees produce 16, 700, tons of ore daily. From this tonnage 363,400 pounds of refined Lake Copper are produced in various shapes as specified by the customer. The following paper explains the geology of the ore body and briefly outlines present mining methods. It enumerates the reasons for considering longwall mining of a hardrock* ore body and the preliminary investigations leading to the decision to undertake the initial test panel. Selection of the initial test panel location is covered in detail. Equipment choice and reasons for that choice are described as well as selection and training of personnel.

Through the use of case studies, the paper explores how companies and industry associations have used LCA to their advantage: from evaluating capital investments, meeting customer information needs, supporting new product applications, and developing credible marketing information on the environmental performance of their products. It also explores the dynamics of LCA adoption and integration within companies, and provides recommendations to further strengthen institutionalization of LCA.

"With todays economic trials and tribulations we have all become deeply engaged in costs and cost cutting in our field of mineral processing. Grinding is one of the most expensive unit operations. The cost of grinding media is the most expensive item in grinding costs. Therefore, it is only reasonable to attack the cost-cutting area by trying to reduce the consumption of media. This introduces the field of autogenous or rock-on-rock grinding.Rock-on-rock grinding is not new to us. It has been known for many decades;The South Africans used pebble grinding in the '20's for gold.Mr. B. Crocker was prompted for the same reasons to introduce pebble grinding at Lakeshore Mines in Kirkland Lake during the last war.The Buffalo Anchorite used beach pebbles in grinding prior to the war.Autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding is used quite successfully in the iron ore field. Base metals have their examples in Australia at Caba, in Africa at Komato and in Sweden at Aitik.Recently three mills in British Columbia and one in Arizona started with autogenous mills in their circuits. One was originally conceived to utilize a modified autogenous grind with a crusher in the circuit. All except the same mill had contingency plans for converting to semi-autogenous. All four mills have since converted to the semi-autogenous mode. These are Island Copper, Lornex, and Similkameen in B.C. and Pima Mining in Arizona."

Anhydrous methods were tested for the extraction of beryllium from low-grade source materials. The purpose of the investigations was to find new extraction processes that are applicable to domestic ores. Beryl, helvite, and phenacite materials containing from 0.1 to 2.8 percent BeO were used as starting materials for direct halogenation tests and pretreatment followed by halogenation. The results of the investigations showed that direct fluorination and carbide-chlorination are two practicable methods that can be applied to low-grade concentrates. Treatment of concentrate-carbon mixtures with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride extracted 99 percent of the beryllium in the concentrate; the soluble fluoride product, converted to an oxide, contained 70 percent BeO. Chlorination of beryllium-silicon carbide, prepared from low-grade concentrates, extracted beryllium into the volatile chloride product.

Among the zinc base alloys used for casting in metal moulds, pnrticularly die casting, those alloys containing aluminum usually together with copper, are probably the most widely used. The reason lies in their desirable mechanical properties and the fluidity and absence of hot shortncss which facilitate ca,sting. Objection to the use of these alloys may be raised on account of the rather frequent instances of failure of a type variously described as disintegration, exfoliation and intererystalline corrosion. In all cases which have come to our kno~vlcdge where the conditionsof service were known, failure has occurred upon cxposurc to moisture and heat varying from a hot moist atmosphere to lligh pressure steam. RIoreover, the alloys described in all such roses contain impurities or alloying metals which the present authors have found to have enormous accelerating effects on intererystalline oxid:~t'ion in zinc-aluminurn alloys. Thus Williams1 experimented with an alloy containing a large percentage of tin exposed in Cuba. Baucr2 reports failure of a boiler plug containing over 1 per cent. of impurities, doubtless lead for the must part, and Rawdon's3 examinations were madc on an alloy containing 0.1 per cent. lead also exyosctl to thc Tropics. No thorough investigation of the nature and cause of this type of failure has been made heretofore, so far as the authors are aware, although Rawdon correctly classified it as internal oxidation. We have, therefore, carried out this investigation in order to det'ermine the exact nature of this phenonienon and the effect of other metals present as impurities or intentional additions in accelerating or retarding it. In the appendix we include a considerable amount of data which may be valuable in selecting an alloy combining good physical properties with high resistance to oxidation. Ultrasonic Stirring Technology (UST) is used in this study to manufacture Al-based nano-composites. Ultrasonic cavitation plays an important role in refining the microstructure, dispersing the nanoparticles and breaking up clusters of nanoparticles. In this paper, 6061/A356 alloys and Al2O3/SiC nanoparticles are used as the matrix alloys and the reinforcements, respectively. The nanoparticles were inserted into the molten alloy and dispersed by ultrasonic cavitation and acoustic streaming. A previously developed multiphase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was used to study the cavitation and the nanodispersion phenomena during ultrasonic processing of these alloys. A comparison between the mechanical properties of the as-cast 6061 and 356 alloys and nano-composites has been performed.

"The 2018 Elko Roundtable was held at the Red Lion in Elko, NV on March 15, 2018. The gracious host was once again Knight Piésold. Attendance was robust with representatives from more than 14 mining properties across Nevada representing nine corporations. Total attendance was at its highest in almost a decade. A high level of interest was also gauged by the number of companies with multiple attendees.The topic of water in mining was clearly a factor in creating the large show of interest. In terms of industry trends that are tracked annually, this topic had been absent from the list for more than 10 years (Deloitte, 2018) but was squarely planted there this year. And deservedly so. Three attending companies are signatories of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) which espouses a firm stance on water stewardship (ICMM, 2017).How’s the water?It is reported that water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of the world’s population (Deloitte, 2018). Consumption of water in the United States, based on the last detailed census, entails only 1.5 percent usage by the mining industry. The largest users are reportedly thermoelectric power and irrigation, combining for more than 75 percent of the U.S. consumption. During the prior census period, water usage at mines was up dramatically (USGS, 2014).Mine water source usage is primarily a mix of ground water and saline or fresh surface water resources. Over the previous period, saline sources experienced the greatest percentage in growth as a mine water source, nearly doubling in use. Nevada ranks second as a state nationally in mine water consumption. California is the leader, and Nevada is immediately followed by Utah and Alaska (USGS, 2014).Water rights in Nevada and the ongoing litigation at the state level, particularly over the Humboldt River basin, have elevated the concern over the supply of water and have raised the interest regarding the topic of water across the mining industry as well as within other industries.The Elko Roundtable meeting began with a safety share and introductions, and included each attendee mentioned a water problem or solution that he or she would like to discuss during the day. An interesting list of subtopics was developed from this round robin and yielded the following most common themes:• Mine pit dewatering during operation and pit wall stability.• Draindown from tailings dams and heap leach pads and dealing with this at closure.• Post closure pit lakes, pit lake water quality and associated water rights."
