With production of coal per man-hour of work highest in history, the coal mines of the United States established a lower accident-frequency4 rate in 1942 than in any year since 1930, the first for which the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, collected complete reports of nonfatal as well as fatal injuries. Reports from mine operators and State mining departments showed that 530,861 men were employed in and about coal mines during the calendar year 1942. This number does not include office employees or coke-oven workers. The figure represents a decrease of 15,831 men from the previous year, owing to losses of men to the military services and to more lucrative employment in the munitions and other industries. The loss of men was offset to some degree by an increase in the number of days of mine activity and the average number of hours of work per man during the year. The volume of work done during 1942 was 910 million man-hours, 11 percent more than in 1941. The average employee worked 243 days, 30 days more than in 1941. Production reached the unprecedented total of 640 million short tons, an increase of 12 percent over 1941; 582 million tons came from the bituminous fields of the United States and 58 million tons from the anthracite fields of Pennsylvania. To produce this quantity of coal 1,471 men sacrified their lives, and 69,564 men suffered nonfatal injuries that disabled them for more than the remainder of the day on which the accident occurred. The nonfatal injuries were divided into three groups: 65 caused permanent total disability, 2,045 caused permanent partial disability, and 67,454 caused temporary disability of 1 day or more but did not result in the loss of, or permanent loss of use of, any part of the body.

Following the gold discoveries of the late 1800's much was written regarding the vast mineral resources of Alaska, and much interest was aroused, and yet over the years little has been done to exploit those resources. Between 1906 and 1935 the Kennecott copper mines of the Copper River region were the keystone of the mineral economy (fig, 1). After the depletion of the Kennecott ore reserves and aided by the statutory rise in the price of gold, the yellow metal became the major mineral commodity. In recent years it has shared the honors with coal and sand and gravel. Although this trend should indicate the development of a stable, diversified mineral industry, yet the trend of production is downward. This report results from a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines to delineate the problems and to forecast the growth of the mineral industries in Alaska. The need for such a blueprint for the future was enhanced by the population explosion in the United States and the consequent eventual need for additional living space, as well as the current interest in new areas, and the necessity to develop reserves of strategic minerals.

This paper presents an industrial verification test, adding a high pressure grinding roll and magnetic separation operation after the third-stage fine crushing operation to reduce the particle size of ball mill feed and improve the processing capacity of grinding operation. The optimal process parameters of high pressure grinding roll and magnetic separation were determined to be a 10 mm of roller surface spacing, a 10.5 Mpa of roller surface pressure, a 14 r/min of roller surface speed, a particle feed size to the magnetic separator of P100 3 mm, and a 3000 Oe of magnetic field intensity. Under the above optimized conditions, the iron grade of magnetic pre-enriched concentrate increased significantly from 28.27% to 36.30%, and the iron recovery was 87.59%. Meanwhile, the yield of coarse tailings was 36.16%, which significantly reduced the amount of ore entering the subsequent ball mill-magnetic separation operation. The ball mill Bond work index Wib of raw materials and the pre-enriched concentrate were 11.76 kW•h/t and 10.46 kW•h/t, respectively. The relative grindability of the pre-enriched concentrate was increased by 34%.

Mining of lignite is the largest bulk materials handling activity in Europe. In order to mine this lignite, with an average calorific value of only a third of bituminous coal in an economical way, highly efficient opencast mining technology is mandatory. The total continuous mining of overburden and lignite was introduced more than 60 years ago and was subsequently developed stepwise into the largest mass transport system of the world. In 2011, the Inden Mine, one of three RWE Power mines, stripped 90 Mbcm of overburden to produce 22 Mt of lignite. In total, nearly 100 Mt of Lignite was produced from the three mines of RWE Power in Germany. Beside bucket wheel excavators (BWE), several high-performance in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems, which allow the adoption of continuous mining systems, even for typical shovel and truck (S&T) operations, are available today. RWE Power assists operators considering a change from the S&T to IPCC technology, both in the planning process involving large-scale belt conveyor systems and later with operational know how transfer. In a number of cases, the challenges associated with this system change have been addressed and solved successfully. One key challenge is managing the development of skills for operating the belt conveyor systems efficiently. This paper compares the effectiveness of S&T to different configurations of continuous mining operation for an up to 170 m deep mine with a total annual output of 117 Mbcm. From the mine operatorÆs point-of-view, the quantity and skill level of staffing required for operation and maintenance are discussed in detail. High pressure grinding rolls have been utilized in various operations during the past four decades, simply due to their inherent mode of breakage that offers metallurgical benefits with pronounced energy reduction. For every new application, wear and in particular roll surface wear protection has always been the focal point of HPGR trade-off studies. Wear remains an important issue throughout a mine’s life given inevitable variations in the ore deposits properties. Hence, the capability of continuous scanning of rolls provides ample information about any deviations in the design values as well as their effect on the wear pattern. In part I of this manuscript, we present the feasibility of in-line scanning of roll surface in a 200 × 100 mm lab-scale HPGR. First, the in-line scanning was developed in a mock-up roll and then the scanner was moved to the laboratory-scale HPGR. We present the choice of scanners and the methods adopted to achieve high-level accuracy of determining wear. Even though we planned for micron-level precision of scanning, the inherent variability in shaft rotation was higher than the variability in the roll diameter due to wear. The hundred-kilogram mass processed in the HPGR was not sufficient to create enough wear that is discernible to the in-line scanner. Yet, the method tested is a promising avenue for inline scanning of HPGR rolls.

The problem of thin and very thin coal seam extraction in a long perspective of Ukraine?s fuel and energy industry development was determined. Technical and economic benefits of coal seams selective mining technique including beneficial environmental impact were substantiated. The scientific and practical aspects of development of borehole underground coal gasification (BUCG) technology are considered. The technological scheme of underground gas generators is offered on the basis of the authors? criteria of fitness and adaptability to the mine and geological conditions. These charts foresee the preparation of gas generators from earth surface and directly from the present mine working by inclined horizontal boreholes. Basic research is directed at abandoned supplies extraction in coal mines. Concepts of technological decisions and technical implementation of the underground part of the gasification system are worked out with analytical models, with subsequent test verification on special options and a mine experimental gas generator. Forming the technological scheme of gasification is founded on the basis of tying up spatial and sentinel factosr of coal seam gasification taking into account sufficient impermeability of the system a «gas generator ? rock massif» and to dirigibility by thermochemical processes that flow in a rock massif. The offered solutions contain the possibility of creation of the power and chemical enterprises of gasification, taking into account the complex use of BUCG products in the ecologically reserved technological cycle. Gas generator efficiency is evaluated from an economic standpoint.

For more than 100 years, the Republic of Chile has been one of the leading copper-producing countries of the world. Between 1877 and 1880 Chile accounted for over 50 pet of total world copper production. Today it has the world's largest known reserves of copper ore and a capability of producing over 600,000 tons per year. This capacity can and will be increased as the world demand for copper grows steadily during the remaining years of this century. The Potrerillos mine of Andes Copper Mining Co., a subsidiary of The Anaconda Co., was developed in the rugged, high Cordilleras in the early 1920's, and the townsite, concentrator, leaching plants, smelter, railroad, power and port facilities were completed so that it came into full production in 1927. Since then and until the closing o f the mine in June of last year, 1,762,192 tons o f copper were produced.

"A review is made of some of the principal factors and conditions that are, and will be, important to the over-all market climate for asbestos fibre and for the future of Canada's asbestos industry: - health hazard associated with asbestos exposure;- uncertain international regulatory environment for continued asbestos use;- adverse public reaction to asbestos;- product liability/litigation costs (U.S.A. primarily);- promotion of substitution by governments and asbestos user industries; and- minimal product and market development efforts by asbestos producing and consuming industries.In addition, Canadian producers, who export some 95 per cent of their production, face additional constraints:- dramatically reduced integration with asbestos-consuming industries;- 60 per cent of exports to most rapidly declining markets (U.S.A., Europe);- increased competition from offshore producers favourably located to growth markets in developing countries;- increasing production costs;- a strong dollar;- disadvantageous freight rates; and- loss of price leadership and price erosion.Future market trends, as well as prospects for Canada's asbestos industry, will be projected in this paper.Economic FactorsTable 1 presents asbestos fibre production in all countries for the period 1980-82. In certain instances, e.g. U.S.S.R. and China, these are capacity estimates as production statistics are not officially published. The U.S.S.R, by far, is the world's largest producer accounting for some 50 per cent of world production, though most production is consumed internally or by COMECON countries. It is estimated that some 700 plants produce asbestos-containing products within the U.S.S.R.Canada accounts for some 25 per cent of world production though it ranks first in world trade. Other important producers are South Africa Zimbabwe, Brazil and Italy. Since 1979, Canada's asbestos mining industry has experienced a dramatic drop in production and exports of asbestos fibre, as demonstrated in Table 2."

In a previous article1 the methyl stretching vibrations for a series of xanthates and amines were reported, and the frequency of the methyl stretching vibrations in a homologous series of the alkyl compounds were shown to decrease exponentially with chain length and approach a limiting value corresponding to that of saturated hydrocarbon beyond six or seven carbons. These observations were explained quantitatively by the theory of Goto and Takenaka2 who proposed an equation relating the frequency shifts to the inductive effect of polar groups. As a result, the alkyl groups in the shorter chain heteropolar compounds were interpreted as becoming somewhat polar, and a good correlation was observed between the CH3-stretching frequencies and such surface chemistry parameters as contact angle, surface tension lowering, solubility, and critical micelle concentration" The substitution of fluorine atoms, the most electronegative of all atoms, for the hydrogen atoms in alkyl groups was expected to reverse the direction of the inductive effect within a heteropolar molecule, and its effect on the C-F stretching frequency shifts and on some surface chemical properties became of interest. In a recent study the C-F stretching frequencies of a series of normal perfluorocarboxylic acids and a few 1,1' -dihydroperfluoro alcohols were determined as a function of chain length and the results were compared with the corresponding hydrocarbon analogs. Furthermore, the nature of the induced polarity in the hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon groups was investigated through surface potential measurements at the interfaces of air-aqueous solutions of normal butyl alcohol and of l,l'-dihydroperfluorobutyl alcohol and through differential capacity and electrocapillary measurements at the interfaces of mercury-aqueous solutions containing the above two alcohols. Experimental Normal perfluorocarboxylic acids and 1,1' -dihydroperfluoro alcohols were provided through the courtesy of the 3M Company, St. Paul, Minnesota. The coal producers of the Rocky Mountain states have led in one of America's true industry revolutions - the leaps in productivity and competitiveness that deliver coal-fired electric power to the U.S. economy at prices that are the competitive envy of the world. You are a primary reason the average price of industrial power in the U.S. - the power that creates and upholds jobs - is: ? 10 percent below the French average, where nuclear power is dominant; ? 37 percent below the average for industrialized Europe; ? 49 percent below the German average, where subsidized coal and nuclear rule; ? And 73 percent below the Japanese average where nuclear and liquified natural gas dominate. There are interests ambitious to change all of that; and they will be a subject of my remarks, some by name, rank, and affiliation. Coal-fired power plants in the Rocky Mountain states deliver some of America's lowest cost electricity; and America's coal-fired plants deliver some of the world's lowest cost electricity. Represented here in one room are producers from states that deliver more than 40 percent of America's coal and five of her top 10 producing states. You are cornerstones of America's economic strength and future growth. The theme for this meeting is "The Many Partnerships of Coal;" and, in this keynote, I'd like to offer a variation on the theme. I'd like to discuss a determined partnership that is dedicated to overturning everything you have accomplished, plus the structure of our society - very dedicated, very patient, very determined. This partnership masks itself as being in the public interest but behind the mask a political alliance of three distinct private interests can be seen: ? One is ambitious for economic reward as a right and without the trouble of effort; ? One is ambitious for economic advantage in trade without the trouble of competing; ? And one is ambitious for the power to govern people without the trouble of winning consent in elections - to change the way other people choose to live in accord with their own passionately held beliefs. The international agreement on climate is being used as an artifice to advance these interests, and the interests are making the United Nations a mechanism for achieving those objectives - for turning the screw, so to speak. The President that Americans elect this year soon will come under intense pressure from these partners to: ? First, quickly adopt policies that will raise U.S. energy prices and restrict use under the climate agreement; ? And in 1998 - if they follow their own published plans - to begin the subordination of the independence of the United States to a collective sovereignty in economic, political, legal and other matters. The Worldwatch Institute inaugurated this pressure last year with a policy monograph entitled Partnership for the Planet: An Environmental Agenda for the United Nations. This is but one indicator of the situation I ask you to consider. The pressure will increase after the election. Worldwatch is one of those intellect-oriented "public interest" groups whose work often leads to policy proposals and debate. Worldwatch gets money from the U.N. Population Fund and the MacArthur Foundation among others. And so my remarks require wading waist deep into one of the more sporting current propositions of American public policy - discussion of ambitions for and within the United Nations to achieve that which the ambitious call global governance. "The modes of occurrence of arsenic and the effects of low-intensity leaching-flotation on arsenic removal from coal slime from the Tanggongta Plant, Inner Mongolia, China were investigated. The coal slime was examined using hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and X-ray diffraction to obtain the content of elements and the major minerals. The modes of occurrence of arsenic in minerals were determined using selective leaching, float-and-sink analysis, and polarized light microscopy. The results indicate that pyrite is the dominant carrier of arsenic in the coal slime, which predominantly exists in association with clay. Significant proportion of the arsenic is removed by a low-intensity leaching-flotation process, consistent with the data from selective leaching and flotation of gangue. The results show that low intensity leaching-alkali washing-flotation is more efficient than direct flotation and low-intensity leaching-flotation.IntroductionUnderstanding the occurrence of arsenic in coal and its removal is significant in optimizing coal utilization, because arsenic in the environment is viewed as a potentially toxic trace element (Finkelman, Belkin, and Zhang, 1999; Hall, 2002; Smith et al., 1992; Smedley et al., 2003; Zheng et al., 1999). Many studies on the modes of occurrence and concentration trends of arsenic in different coal and washing products have been performed (Diehl, Goldhaber, and Hatch, 2004; Kolker et al., 2000; Quick and Irons, 2002; Wang et al., 2006; Fan et al., 2016). Trace elements are usually preferentially associated with certain minerals and the form that these minerals take will influence the efficiency of removal during cleaning (Quick and Irons, 2002). Arsenic is mainly associated with minerals such as pyrite, carbonate, and silicate (Demir et al., 1998; Diehl, Goldhaber, and Hatch, 2004; Zhou et al., 2014). The existence of organically bound arsenic was also confirmed using X-ray absorption (Kolker et al., 2000). However, inorganic arsenic is the principal source of pollution because of its leachability and high concentration compared with organic arsenic (Fujino et al., 2004; Gao, Lu, and Wang, 2010; Jiang et al., 2008; Kolker et al., 2000)."

"Mining of ore bodies that are located at great depths enforces long distances to move the excavated rock masses to the surface. The excavated rock mass contains not only ore that can be economically extracted from the face but also waste, which is usually discarded several steps further downstream in the process. As a result, a large amount of rock is transported to the surface, influencing the costs at which the ore is produced. Reducing the amount of waste rock being transported to the surface by introducing a near-to-face sorting plant would improve the in many cases strained transport system in the deep mine. In this study, one of Boliden’s cut-and-fill mines was analysed with respect to the challenges related to rock transportation and increasing mining depth. The study aims to evaluate the potential use of a new near-to-face sorting system in the operating underground mine. Discrete event simulation was used to study and analyse the rock transportation system with and without the near-to-face sorting plant. The paper shows how the underground rock transportation system and the production were influenced when the near-to-face sorting equipment was added into the current system. INTRODUCTION The locations of waste rejection in the mining processes and the cost of removing waste from the system compared with the cost and energy necessary for further comminution are important parts in the material handling system (Bowman and Bearman, 2014). In an underground mine, longer material transportation distances generate the need for further investment in the mobile fleet and ancillary equipment in order to reduce the waste from the material handling as early as possible. One of the ways of reducing the waste (coarse particle size) in material handling is by use of pre-concentration. The benefits of pre-concentration are well known (Schena et al. 1990; Feasby, 1995; Peters et al. 1999; Klein et al. 2002), as well as the factors governing the feasibility of underground pre-concentration (Peters et al., 1999) and the mining integration issues (Klein et al. 2003). In the Onaping Depth orebody in Sudbury, Ontario the study of implementing the pre-concentration resulted in increased capital costs of 6% and a reduction in the operating costs of between 20-40% (Bamber et al, 2004). In this paper, the effects on the production and the transportation system of implementing underground pre-concentration by means of a near-to-face ore sorting plant in the Kristineberg mine are modeled and analyzed using the AutoMod tool. This tool is based on discrete event simulation (DES) (Banks, 2004), allowing high flexibility in customization and enabling the user to view the production of the system before ore sorting plant integration. The sorting plant selected in the simulation is built from modules. The material is fed by conveyor and goes through the comminution, classification, sorting and service processes after which the waste is redirected to backfill headings via trucks. The system mechanically ejects the particles from the feed stream on the basis of the information obtained from both the XRT sensor’s signal and 3D laser scanner based on both density and rate of refraction of light within a particular mineral. The sorting plant could pre-concentrate the metal ore up to 300 mm size. The plant requires little auxiliary infrastructure, is easily modularized for underground installation and can be easily relocated to different areas."

"The phased application of statistical process control (SPC) infers that processes are classifiable as pre-SPC (or phase zero), phase I and phase II processes, with different objectives being pursued in the different phases. Phase zero processes, defined as processes affected by assignable causes of variation, are characterised as follows: out-of-control with unknown autocorrelation structure having an unknown statistical distribution not performing consistently on target with minimum variability potentially incapable of conforming to the product specifications. The objectives of phase I SPC is to obtain estimates of the mean (µ), variance (s2), probability density function (f(X)) and the autocorrelation structure, as well as transforming the process into a phase II process (defined as a process conforming to specifications and performing on target with minimum variability). As in any other type of research or pragmatic improvement intervention, sampling is required is to achieve these objectives. The challenge of deciding a phase I sampling plan is multifarious since it has to cope with the aforementioned effects of assignable causes and provide for rigour estimates of the unknown parameters. Furthermore, deciding sampling plans in phase I invariably presents a classical catch-22 situation: appropriate sampling is required to determine the autocorrelation structure of a variable, but knowledge of the autocorrelation structure is required to formulate an appropriate sampling plan. This paper suggests, for random variables, guidelines to formulate sampling plans, and presents a methodology to estimate the inherent process parameters of process variables and an approach to identify assignable causes in phase I. CITATION:Breytenbach, W P, 2014. The Living Breakwaters project aims to reduce the impact of climate-intensified events on a coastal community which experienced extremely damaging waves and tragic loss of life during Superstorm Sandy. The project consists of approximately 2400 linear feet (730 linear meters) of near-shore breakwaters that will attenuate waves, reduce erosion, and provide habitat spaces for local marine life along the south shore of Staten Island, New York, USA. The system consists of eight rubble mound breakwater structures with a stone core, a base layer (bedding stone or marine mattresses) and outer layers of armor stones. This paper discusses geotechnical subsurface conditions, design, and construction of the breakwater system. The geotechnical design was predominately governed by global slope stability analyses. These analyses considered dynamic wave loading and wave induced excess pore pressures for the design storm event, as well as pseudo-static seismic loading and liquefaction evaluations. Several construction challenges were encountered with the fabrication and deployment of marine mattresses and underwater geotextile installation.

When revegetation is a part of a rehabilitation strategy at mine sites in arid and semi-arid environments, its success can be strongly affected by the availability of water prior or during the time of seed dormancy, germination and early growth of seedlings. The semi-arid and arid environments of northern Australia are characterised by highly variable and erratic rainfall and hence the actual weather conditions at and around the time of germination and seedling emergence play a critical role in determining the success of plant establishment and the type of plant community that may develop.Using available climate data, an analysis has been undertaken and a set of indices has been developed which describe the suitability of the climatic conditions for rehabilitation. In total, eight sites from Queensland and one site from New South Wales, Australia have been analysed. It could be determined that regular rainfall and relatively short periods of water-deficit are key characteristics of climate suitability. A comparison of the locations studied allowed the separation into suitable and susceptible locations in terms of the availability of water, amount of rain and duration of drought between rain events.In our experience, specific estimates of climate suitability are rarely incorporated into the design of mined land rehabilitation programs. We consider that the regional intensity, seasonality and extremity of climate represent an overarching component of landscape complexity, which in turn will influence the development of post-disturbance ecosystems in these regions. This paper presents the outcome of climate analyses paired with the development of suitability indices. Summarized Foreword This paper is one of a series arranged by Institute Divisional Committees for the Fiftieth Anniversary Meeting, reviewing the experience of the major mining and metallurgical industries during the life of the Institute. The viewpoint is national and broadly technical. Geology is stressed on a continental scale without regard for provincial boundaries. The boundary between Canada and the United States is, however, so decisive a factor in our coal-mining economics and our political evolution that mention of its implications cannot be avoided. The Laurentian Shield in Canada makes the occurrence of coal deposits a geological impossibility between the St. Lawrence Lowlands and the Great Plains. All but five per cent of Canadian coal resources occur west of Winnipeg. The utilization of this ninety-five per cent of our coal wealth has to date been a consequence of transcontinental railways' development, and the small fuel needs of thinly populated wheat farming and cattle-raising territory, in what- to judge from the development of mixed farming and greater population density of Manitoba- is merely an initial stage of agricultural intensification and accordant population growth. There is no useful purpose in measuring coal resource against consumption rate in the West as a whole, because the resource is but partially known, and it is difficult to believe that industrialism based upon coal utilization is in any but its infant stage of growth. "INTRODUCTION Ethyl mercaptan (CH3,CH2SH), a combustible organic liquid of the thioalcohol type, is employed at an odorant in many types of fuel gases and dangerous atmospheres, which in themselves are devoid of characteristic odors, to give warring against leakage of such gases or atmospheres into places where they might constitute health or explosion hazards.Ethyl mercaptan has a penetrating disagreeable odor resembling that of onions, garlic, hydrogen sulfide, or rotting cabbage, that exceedingly low concentrations of it can be detected. The of odorants as a beans of detecting leakage of gases and atmospheres has been investigated extensively by chemists and engineers of the Bureau of Mines, and numerous reports as to its value have been published."

Marine design and construction methods are presented on the caisson foundations for the tower piers at the Brooklyn, Ben Franklin, Delaware Memorial 1st, Tappan Zee, Walt Whitman, Throgs Neck, Verrazano Narrows, Delaware Memorial 2nd, and Newport Bridges. All of the bridges are founded on caissons, bearing on bedrock, soil, or piling. Caissons at the Tappan Zee Bridge are partially supported by piling and partially by buoyant forces. General subsurface conditions for each are provided. The purpose of this paper is inform engineers how bridge foundations using caissons were built over major waterways in the Northeastern USA in the past, anticipating a surge of new bridge construction in the near future.
