This year’s inductees, selected by the National Mining Hall of Fame’s Board of Governors, represent the technology, management, mineral policy, education and health and safety aspects of the mining industry. They envelope a diverse cross section of the mining industry and were selected for being visionaries, leaders, educators and ambassadors.In 2015, Frank F. Aplan, T S Ary, Ralph E. Bailey, John Campbell Greenway and Edward Steidle will join 227 other mining industry honorees when formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame. Extensive experimental observations have been performed around drifts and shafts at the Meuse Haute-Marne (North-Eastern France) Underground Research Laboratory (URL) to assess the extent and pattern of the induced fracture networks in Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. Two types of fractures can be distinguished, namely; shear (mode II) and extension unloading (mode I) fractures. The main goal of the present paper is to provide insights on the extent of damaged zone around the drifts by numerical simulations. A two-step approach is considered. First, 2D elastic calculations are performed for simulating the excavation of a drift following the direction of the major in situ horizontal stress. The evolution of the stress and strain tensors around drifts are calculated by applying an elliptic convergence function on the drift wall. Two failure criteria are then verified for the induced damage. An equivalent strain and an elastic energy based damage criteria are considered. The obtained results show that the employed simplified approach provides rather good results for the extent of the damaged zone for drifts parallel to major horizontal stress. However, post-processing elastic results leads to overestimating the vertical extent of the damage zone and underestimating its lateral extent, where the in situ stress state is quasi-isotropic in a section of drift. Nevertheless, the obtained results show that an energy based damage criterion could be considered as a potential way for reproducing the extent of the damaged zones if a convergence function can be defined for the drift.

Although chromite deposits occur in California , Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming , Pennsylvania, Maryland , New Mexico , North Carolina, Alaska, and the Phillippine Islands , less than 1 percent of the ore used in the United States is obtained from these deposits . Most of the ore in peacetime has been supplied by imports from South Africa, New Caledonia, Turkey, and Cuba . The mineral chromite , the most important chromium ore , is an isometric spinel with an ideal composition of FeO Cr2O3 , but commercial chromite has the variable composition (Fe , Mg) Oʻ (Cr , Al , Fe) 203. Chromite has a black color , a specific gravity of 4.4 , and a hardness of 5.5 . In thin section the color is reddish -brown to black . Chromite occurs in dunite and pyroxenitic ultrabasic rocks , which are composed of iron- magnesium silicate minerals such as olivine , saxonite , serpentine , and enstatite . These are also the gangue minerals . Com mercial ore occurs at random in the country rock in kidney- or lens - shaped deposits , which have no apparent relationship to each other . Stringers , veins , and bands often cut the country rock without regard either to fracture or to other deposits . Some beach sands , such as those in southern Oregon, contain chromite .

ONE LAW cannot he evaded, the economic law of supply and demand. Silver, like any other commodity, is subject to this law; and its price in the long run is determined by existing conditions. I say "in the lone run because at times silver has appeared to mope contra to basic coalitions. Such movements, however, are, occasioned by the market's attempt to anticipate changes in these governing conditions. If the expected changes materialize then the new market level is justified, but if they do not then the market will revert to its previous status, A striking example of such a move occurred in November when the price advanced over 70, in ten days and then in the next two weeks lost more than it had gained. The reasons for this advance were that the speculative element interpreted certain events as favorable to silver namely, England suspension of the gold standard, higher shat prices, and the Chinese-Japanese crisis. When these expectations proved unjustified the inevitably, elapse followed became the governing conditions had not channel.

The nickel laterite industry is divided into two camps when it comes to the grade of the ferronickels produced. One group, led by Falcondo and Cerro Matoso, markets high-grade ferronickels in the range of 35 to 40% nickel, while another group, led by SLN and the Japanese smelters, favour lower grades in the range of 20 to 25%. Because the ores processed by these smelters vary widely in terms of nickel content and iron to nickel ratios, it is probably more accurate to classify these smelters in terms of their iron recovery: Falcondo and Cerro Matoso smelt at lower reduction potentials and thus recover only 15 to 30% of the iron in their ores, while SLN and the Japanese smelters are very reducing and recover 45 to 65% of their iron. Low reductions generally imply higher slag losses and lower nickel recoveries, but also lower power and reductant requirements; higher reductions, the reverse. The question is, therefore, whether an economically optimum ferronickel grade exists for processing any given ore. This paper proposes a methodology for determining this optimum grade and concludes that nickel laterite smelters should favour low reductions and production of high-grade ferronickels.

The extraction of scandium from its oxide with a task specific ionic liquid [Hbet][Tf2N] offers potential advantages of lower energy consumption, recycling of the extractant and reduced environmental impact compared to conventional methods. In this paper, the influence of reaction temperature, solid to liquid ratio and water to the ionic liquid ratio on the extraction of scandium from a synthetic scandium oxide (Sc2O3) system was studied. The influence of investigated parameters on leaching was very significant as approximately 98% scandium was extracted from its oxide after 72 h. Furthermore, the ionic liquid also selectively extracted 47% scandium after 48 h from a mixture of pure metal oxides containing oxides of tantalum, niobium, and scandium. The research demonstrated the potential of [Hbet][Tf2N] to selectively extract scandium from columbite processing tailings and other scandium bearing ores like Ixiolite, Heftetjernite and Tantalite which predominately contain tantalum and niobium.

To address the U.S. Department of Energy’s critical minerals strategies regarding rare earth elements (REE) in the U.S.A. This study evaluated apatite-rich mine tailing from the historic Pea Ridge Iron Mine (PR) for possible enrichment of REE by the froth flotation process. Comprehensive characterization studies were performed on the tailing samples to quantify the REE content, identify the REEbearing minerals and their liberation behavior. The aforementioned characterization studies were: x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and TESCAN’s Integrated Mineral Analysis (TIMA). The ICP-MS analysis showed that the concentrations of heavy-REE and light-REE were 8000 ppm and 3000 ppm, respectively. TIMA showed that monazite was the major REE-bearing mineral. Additionally, it was shown that monazite and other REE-bearing minerals were strongly locked within larger apatite grains. Findings from the characterization studies suggested that REE could be enriched using phosphate minerals’ direct froth flotation process. Flotation feasibility tests were performed using selected organic and inorganic iron oxides’ depressants, including polyacrylamide (PAM), in-house synthesized hybrid polyacrylamide (HyPAM), chitosan, sodium silicates, and corn starch. Results showed that the depressant’s efficiency at pH 9 was in the following order: HyPAM > chitosan > PAM > sodium metasilicate > corn starch. Zeta potential studies on the selected depressants indicated that chitosan had the highest adsorption on magnetite’s surface at pH 7. Therefore, additional batch flotation experiments using chitosan as an iron oxides depressant were conducted as a function of chitosan dosage. Results indicated that the highest P2O5 recovery of 55% and grade of 28 wt.% were obtained at 150g/t of chitosan. However, the concentrate’s highest total REE enrichment of 1.07% was achieved at a 200 g/t dosage of chitosan. The low enrichment of REE highlighted the complex mineralogy of the PR tailings and the need to implement additional beneficiation strategies before and after the froth flotation process.

ABSTRACT The Goldex mining and milling complex is operated by Agnico-Eagle and is located in the Abitibi greenstone region of northwestern Quebec, Canada. Commercial production started in 2008. Average gold recovery is 93.5% with approximately 68% of gold recovery coming from the gravity circuit. During the first three years of production, three gravity audits were carried out to optimize performance of the gravity circuit. This paper presents results of the audits and the development of a model linking gravity and overall gold recovery, and outlines improvements made to increase gravity performance and reduce operating costs.

Ion elutriation was used to extract silver cyanide complexes and free cyanide from aqueous streams containing up to 10 ppm silver and 5 ppm free cyanide. Screening tests selected nine of 350 different surfactants for further, larger scale experiments. The screening procedure used 0.1 g of each of the surfactants in 300 mL of synthetic wastewater. Air was sparged into the test cell at 50 cc/min. The foam was refluxed during the tests and was not sampled. Samples of the solution were taken at specified intervals and analyzed by wet chemical methods for free cyanide and by atomic absorption for silver content. The most effective surfactants lowered the silver and free cyanide concentrations to less than 0.5 ppm in 1 h or less. These surfactants were quaternary amine salts with one long chain (C12-C18) organic group and three methyl groups. Experiments using 3 L batches of wastewater or an ion elutriation cell continuously fed with solution draining from an inactive heap leach operation confirmed the results from the screening tests.

One hundred thousand miles of flying over the North country without a single air casualty; much of it over virgin territory probably never before visited by white men; some of it over regions that abound with possibilities for minerals; all of it effective, for exploration and the establishment of bases and supply-stations, and for the carrying of men and their tools and provisions- this, briefly, is the record of Northern Aerial Minerals Exploration, Limited, a Canadian company organized Jess than nine months ago, which has been functioning, without interruption, during spring, summer, and now into winter. Our planes have ranged from the Alaskan boundary on the west to the Labrador coast on the east, and from the Transcontinental railway north to the Arctic circle. Our prospectors, carried on trips of hundreds, and occasionally thousands, of miles, have gone over large sections of country which were never before explored, and at the end of the prospecting season the Company finds itself in possession of several groups of important gold claims, which look most promising. In addition to this, we have been in contact with deposits of almost every known mineral.

Hydrocyclone separators are widely used in various industrial applications in the oil and mining industries to sort, classify, and separate solid particles or liquid droplets within liquid suspensions, which are considered to be multiphase systems. Numerous valuable studies have been conducted in recent years to investigate the flow fields inside hydrocyclones. However, much of the information regarding the performance of cyclones in the literature has limitations and much of it cannot be considered as completely applicable to most real-world applications; many of the studies investigated the flow fields within extremely simplified hydraulic designs that are not representative of the complex geometries or large sizes which are typical in industry. Therefore, in this study, the two-phase flow system inside the actual hydraulic geometry of a milling circuit hydrocyclone is explored with the aid of both computational and experimental techniques (particle image velocimetry (PIV)). More specifically, the flow field with an air core has been investigated. In addition, the air-liquid two phases flow in a hydrocyclone might cause some challenges on both the computational and experimental sides. Two turbulence models are utilized in the numerical calculations: the Reynolds stress model and large eddy simulation. The computational studies are mainly focused on the local flow behavior and the prediction of the dimensions and shape of the air core. Different section planes of hydrocyclone are selected as planes of interest and divided into several fields of view (FOV) for PIV measurements. Two-dimensional experimental velocity vector maps are obtained in each of the fields of view. The computational results are validated globally using pressure and flow rate readings at the boundaries and locally by comparison to the PIV velocity vector maps and profiles.

This study investigates nickel laterite porosity and its impact on geometallurgical modelling. We performed a detailed mineralogical study on a set of Ni-laterite samples originating from New Caledonia. Samples were analysed after heavy liquid separation by automated SEM (QEMSCAN®). Laboratory and QEMSCAN® modelling results do not correlate well. Ideal physical mineral properties such as mineral densities used in QEMSCAN® modelling do not match the actual physical densities of minerals. The presence of empty or water-filled pores can represent important amounts in minerals and change the overall density of a particle. An adequate modelling of real density separation of minerals and particles should consider the water-filled pores. The first step towards a better simulation was to integrate pores larger than 10 μm in diameter filled with water (density of 1 g/cm3) in the QEMSCAN® database. The results approached, but did not match the physical laboratory results. The second step was to identify nanometer to micrometer sized pores, which could not be identified by QEMSCAN®. It was possible to identify nanometric pores in enstatite, Fe-oxides, serpentine, talc and quartz, and radial aggregates of fibrous Fe-oxyhydroxides with high resolution SEM (HR-SEM). The quantification of those micro-sized pores was performed on 2D HR-SEM images using image-processing techniques developed in Python to calculate the nanometer to micrometer scale pores in each mineral. Despite the limitation of converting 2D imaging into 3D objects, in our case pore sizes and porosities, we were able to calculate a mean value of porosity for each mineral. The integration of this porosity in the calculation of particle densities yielded a good match between the QEMSCAN® model and the laboratory experiment results. Despite the complexity of a strongly weathered material, such as Ni-laterites, a good knowledge of the ore makes it possible to build reliable processing models. THE opening session of the Institute was held at Hazle Hall, Tuesday evening, October 27th, with a large attendance of members. President Raymond called the Institute to order, and after a few introductory remarks, introduced Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, President of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Mr. Bell was received with great applause, and made his acknowledgments in a brief speech, of which the following is the substance: He desired to thank the Institute personally for the honor conferred upon him in his election to membership, and also for the invitation extended last year to the body of which he was President. The difficulty felt by many members of the Iron and Steel Institute, of leaving for a long journey the works of which they had charge, aggravated by special industrial troubles at the time of the invitation, had obliged them to conclude that it could not then be accepted in a fitting manner. The iron manufacture of this country is a subject of great interest to Englishmen, who look with pride upon the achievements on this side the water of the descendants of a common ancestry. His own reception in this country had far surpassed in cordiality even the well-grounded anticipations he had formed from the assurances of the President and other friends. Notwithstanding the flattering manner in which his friend, in introducing him to the Institute, had spoken of his contributions to the science of iron metallurgy, he could not take to himself alone the significance of this welcome. He knew it was a recognition of the services rendered by the body which he had the honor to represent; and he was glad to see present a member of that body, Mr. Thomas Whitwell, who had fortunately been able to make the journey at this time, and whom he had had the pleasure of meeting on the shores of Lake Champlain. IN discussing the waste upon which hinges, or is supposed to hinge, so largely the preservation of our national resources, the conclusions reached would be more reliable if actual ex¬perience were consulted, and fewer deductions were drawn from general statements, which are often the product of the imagination. It cannot be questioned that the value of by-products has not been sufficiently appreciated by us, and that our, tardiness in recovering the useful ingredients of the escaping gas of our coke-ovens is one of the most glaring instances of shortcoming in that direction. And yet even for that sin there is some palliation in the immature condition of affiliated industries. I presume that it is admitted, without argument, that, except under very exceptional conditions, all the elements cannot be recovered from most of the ores or natural products. which we treat. While it is a shame that the by-products from our coke-ovens should be dissipated, Edward W. Parker's report to the U. S. Geological Survey for 1906' supplies a fairly good excuse in justification of this appalling waste. He says (pp. 773 to 774.)

Nickel-sulfide minerals are normally associated with copper and iron sulfides and often contain a minor amount of valuable metals such as cobalt and detrimental impurities such as arsenic. Metal losses in slag vary from process to process during the pyrometallurgical production of nickel and, depend on the feed composition, slag chemistry and operating conditions. Maximiz the metal recovery is one of major considerations to optimize operating condition for nickel smelting/ converting processes. At the same time, the deportment of minor elements between various phases during nickel smelting is of great importance by smelter operators. The Multi-Phase Equilibrium (MPE) is a thermodynamic package developed by CSIRO for simulating reactions between phases in multi-component and multi-phase systems [1]. Over the years the capability of the MPE model has been extended to cover the behavior of a large number of elements in high temperature systems. The sulfide smelting module of the MPE, which covers the minor elements such as As, Bi, Sb, Pb, Se, Te, Sn, Co and Zn, is capable of modeling the deportment of major and minor elements between various phases during nickel smelting. In this article the application of the MPE model in modelling the nickel smelting process is presented. The modelling results on the majors and minors are compared with the plant data. The deportment behaviour of arsenic in nickel smelting was analysed and the impact of slag chemistry on slag properties was modelled. These results can assist process metallurgists in exploring the optimum fluxing strategy for smooth operation and the potential practices for improving arsenic removal.

This study examined an alternative technique of extracting tungsten from wolframite ore using a fusion method with ammonium phosphate salt. Current techniques use alkali salts to decompose tungsten ores and use various purification methods to produce ammonium paratungstate, which is a key intermediate precursor in the extraction of tungsten. In this study, a two-step extraction process, which involves thermal decomposition of the ore using fusion and a separation stage, is examined. The novelty of this technique is the ability to completely decompose wolframite ore and form an unstable tungsten oxide phosphate (WO2(PO3)2) compound. The instability of WO2(PO3)2 in deionized water enables selective isolation of tungsten as insoluble precipitates of WO3 and WO2. The decomposition reaction of WO2(PO3)2 is influenced by the presence of oxygen and determined to be first order under ambient conditions. Scanning electron micrographs and X-ray diffraction analysis showed above 80% of the tungsten precipitated compared with the amount that remained in the filtrate solution.

The newest addition to the Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes copper producing complex is a by-product uranium extraction plant which was placed into service in February 1980. The plant is unusual in that it is placed internal to the copper countercurrent decantation, solvent extraction, and electrowinning plant. The plant reached full production within a month and, to date, has produced continually above design rates.

The Cornwallis Fold Belt in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago contains numerous Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) Zn- Pb occurrences and the world-class Polaris deposit. The occurrences are mainly hosted by the dolostone in the Thumb Mountain Formation which spreads over 25000 km2. Success in exploration requires further understanding of the genesis of these occurrences and an assessment of their parentage with the giant Polaris deposit. Syn-sulfide dolomites in regional occurrences share C-O-Sr isotopic characteristics similar with Polaris dolomites, indicating warm basinal brines enriched in 87Sr. The dolomites and sphalerites contain fluid inclusions with ice-melting temperature between ?45° and ?25°C, which is significantly lower than for most MVT districts in the world (?30° and ?10°C). These characteristics indicate that all the Cornwallis occurrences were produced by fluids of the same sources and/or aquifers. The deposit size was largely controlled by the rate and duration of the metal-carrying fluid flow, and by the availability of reduced sulfur at the site of mineralization.

However, ceramic coatings have played a tremendous role in the development of technology. Ceramic coating processes made it possible to overcome technological barriers in the areas of optics, electronics, wear resistance and high temperature applications. Ceramic coatings can provide new properties to materials never considered for demanding applications. They can also open new frontiers and revitalize materials which are maturing or in decline."
