"The Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) currently supports nine individual industry working groups focused on developing standards and guidelines for the mining industry. In 2013 the GMSG established the Industrial Comminution Efficiency (ICE) working group to develop freely available guidelines for plant operators to quantify the operating efficiency of industrial comminution circuits. This initiative has engaged a diverse group of representatives from mining companies, equipment vendors, consultants and metallurgical laboratories with vast experience and capabilities in the field of comminution. The GMSG has issued the first two guidelines from the ICE working group in 2015–2016, with the third guideline having completed the approvals process and being in the final stages of editing ahead of release later in 2016.Two of the ICE guidelines present methods to quantify comminution circuit efficiency, and a complementary guideline describes best practice methods to collect the necessary samples and data to furnish these assessments. Collectively the guidelines cover sampling, survey data collection, laboratory testing procedures and calculation processes to allow the user to generate a relative circuit efficiency factor for the comminution circuit at the time of survey. The reference energy consumption is calculated considering the measured F80, P80 and ore strength at the time of survey, using either or both of the Bond or Morrell methods presented in GMSG guidelines dedicated to each method. The guidelines consequently provide the end user with practical tools to perform circuit efficiency analysis and to readily quantify the impact of optimisation efforts.This paper presents the content of the three ICE guidelines and describes their intended application.Citation:Giblett, A and Daniel, M, 2016. Financial capital is highly volatile and if the investor does not get adequate compensation for the risk faced he may consider withdrawing his capital assets from the company and consequently produce a structural change in any sector of the economy. We study the variation in profitability of assets in terms of the changes that occur in the markets. The choice of models used is justified by the extensive theoretical and empirical use of them throughout the history of financial economics. We have used the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and the model based on the arbitrage pricing theory (APT) to determine the beta value. These models have been applied to the monthly returns of 27 mining companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or London Stock Exchange (LSE), using data from the period covered from January 2006 to December 2010. The results of time series and cross sectional regressions for CAPM and APT produce some errors, suggesting that many companies have failed to obtain an adequate cost of capital. Also the results show that higher risk firms tend to have lower profitability. These findings make it unlikely to be maintained over the long term the current status and could drive structural change in the mining sector in the form of mergers.

"The addition of sulphidic materials in the leaching of nickel laterites has several potential benefits that include improvements in the rheological behaviour of the blends, reductions in the sulphuric acid and steam requirements, sweetening of the nickel grade of the combined feed material, and the option of using a range of sulphidic materials. The current study examines the oxidative processing of 30% w/w blends of nickel concentrate and nickel laterite ore at 250oC. In particular, the viability of using low oxygen overpressures was examined for significant amounts of nickel flotation concentrate, up to 12% w/w. Further to this the impact of process water quality, in particular the presence of chloride, upon the kinetics of extraction and the mineralogy of the residue were also investigated. This paper will present the results of preliminary work in this area.INTRODUCTIONThe use of sulphidic ore as a source of sulphuric acid during oxidative hydrometallurgical processing is not a novel idea and can be traced back over forty years (Seidel & Fitzhugh, 1968). A series of patents pertaining to application of this approach for laterite ores can be subsequently found (O’Neill, 1973; Opratko et al., 1974; Rodriguez, 2008a, 2008b; O’Callaghan, 2010; Liu et al., 2011) and a few of articles containing published data (Ferron & Fleming, 2004; Quinn et al., 2009). The use of pyrrhotite tailings as a source of sulphuric acid has also been employed for the leaching of converter slags (Perederiy et al., 2011).It is known that hydrometallurgical operations such as the HPAL plant at Murrin Murrin have added small amounts of sulphides as either transitional (mixed sulphide/oxide) ore or non-smeltable concentrate. This can improve the rheology (Rodriguez, 2009) and provide heat credits. However these plants are generally limited in their ability to add such materials due to their reducing nature and given under highly acidic conditions that the breakdown potential of the titanium used for the autoclave lining is significantly reduced. A suitable oxidant must therefore be present to ensure the potential remains sufficiently high."

Crosshole sonic logging (CSL) is a popular quality assurance and quality control method used to examine the concrete quality of cast-in place deep foundations, though the evaluation of the results is subject to certain limitations. One such limitation explored in this paper is the occurrence of false positives, where signal anomalies indicated by CSL test results are not necessarily indicative of imperfections in the foundation that could affect its performance. A case study of false positives evaluated in CSL records in a major infrastructure project in Metro Manila is presented in this paper. A detailed desktop evaluation and results from complementary high-strain dynamic load testing and low-strain pile integrity testing were used to evaluate the significance of the suspected false positive signal anomalies from the CSL test results. Recommendations for the proper interpretation and evaluation of CSL test results in Philippine practice, given the method’s limitations and examples presented, are also shared.

"Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices and currencies expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades. Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit, not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill. Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times. This paper explores: the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process; and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included. Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of lead and zinc from 104 domestic mines and deposits. Fourteen primary lead and fifty-three primary zinc operations with in situ demonstrated resources containing 27.3 million metric tons (t) of lead and 53 million t of zinc were subsequently evaluated. Potentially 17.5 million t of lead and 2.4 million t of byproduct zinc could be recovered from 14 primary lead operations. Economic evaluations performed in constant January 1982 dollars determined a long-run total cost per pound of recoverable commodity. Including a 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), 59 pct of primary lead was potentially available at or below $0.32 per pound of lead. Potentially 40 million t of zinc and 5.6 million t of byproduct lead could be recovered from 53 primary zinc operations. Ninety percent of the recoverable zinc is potentially available from currently nonproducing mines and deposits, and a weighted average of their long-run total costs was determined at $0.98 per pound of zinc. At a breakeven (0-pct) DCFROR, these non producing operations had a weighted average long-run total cost of $0.58 per pound of zinc. Sensitivity analyses illustrated that operations that recover byproducts were most sensitive to fluctuating metal prices, producing operations were more sensitive to increased smelter treatment charges, and nonproducing operations were impacted most by the DCFROR.

In recent years, the quality of iron ores has decreased due to the increase in the content of impurities, namely quartz, aluminum, phosphorus, and sulfur. It indicates that the removal of impurities from iron ore is an extremely challenging task. In particular, the high amount of phosphorus in iron ore could be a problem for energy consumption and CO2 emission in the steelmaking process. To reduce the impact of phosphorus, mainly two approaches: the utilisation of low-phosphorus iron ore, or dephosphorisation of high-phosphorus iron ore using mineral processing technology, have been suggested. In this paper, the removal of phosphorus from a low-grade high-phosphorus iron ore containing 0.1 mass% P and 57.5% Fe by alkaline roasting and wet grinding is discussed. The iron ore consists mainly of hematite, goethite, and quartz. Effects of sodium hydroxide concentration used as an alkaline source, roasting temperature, grinding time, and particle size on the dephosphorisation of highphosphorus iron ore were investigated. The dephosphorisation efficiency, iron loss, and mineralogical components of low-grade high-phosphorus iron ore under various experimental conditions were characterised by using XRD, SEM-EDS, and particle size distribution analysis. Results showed that the phosphorus content was lowered from 0.1 mass% to 0.034 mass%, while the iron grade reached 59.8 mass% from 57.5 mass% by alkaline roasting with 0.05 w/w NaOH at 300 °C for 2 h, followed by wet grinding in an attritor with water for 30 seconds at room temperature. Under the experimental conditions, the dephosphorisation rate was about 54.7%, and the solution obtained by wet grinding contained 22.7 mg/L of phosphorus and 21.5 mg/L of iron. Introduction Under our present civilization, industrial developments will be greatest in those areas in which energy .can be most economically produced and efficiently used, where labour is in adequate supply, and where markets for the products of industry are available. A knowledge of fuels- the present major sources of energy- and of their utilization is therefore of vital importance. With that in mind, the aim in this paper will be to outline the known reserves of fuels in Alberta, to give their characteristics, to indicate the markets served by each, and to offer some suggestions for the future development of the coal industry. The paper should be regarded as a compilation of published data rather than as an original treatise. Alberta is richly blessed by having large reserves of mineral fuels. The estimated reserves of coal are 46,562 million tons. Alberta is the oil and gas province of Canada. The world's largest deposit of bituminous sand occurs along the Athabaska river in Alberta. In addition, there are large areas of forested land in the northern and western sections of the Province, and the rivers serve for the development of hydro-power.

The desulfurization process by powder injection and blowing in the RH refining of molten steel and its mechanism have been considered and analyzed. Based on the two-resistance mass transfer theory and the mass balance of sulfur in the system, a kinetic model for the process has been developed. The related parameters of the model, including the mass transfer coefficients and the effective amount of powder in the molten steel being treated for desulfurization, have been more reasonably determined. Modeling and predictions of the process of injecting and blowing the lime-based powder flux under assumed operating modes with the different initial contents of sulfur and amounts of powder injected and blown in a RH degasser of 300 t capacity have been carried out using the model. The relevant circulation rate of the liquid steel and the powder injection and blowing rate were taken to be 100 t/min and 150 kg/min, respectively. The initial contents of sulfur in the liquid steel to be treated and the amounts of powder injection and blowing were respectively assumed to be 0.007, 0.006, 0.005, 0.004, 0.003, 0.002 mass-% and 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3 kg/t-steel. The total treatment time for desulfurization under each mode was set up at 24 min, equivalent to eight circulation cycles of the liquid steel to be treated. The results indicated that the predictions made with this model are in good agreement with some data of the industrial experiments and practice. Injecting and blowing the lime-based powder flux with the composition of 85 mass-% lime (CaO) + 15 mass-% fluorspar (CaF2) of 3-5 kg/t-steel, it is possible to decrease the sulfur content in the molten steel to ultralow level below (5-10)x10·4 mass-% from (60-80)x 10·4 mass-%. The total treatment time needed will appropriately be 12-20 min. Intensifying the powder injection and blowing operation and increasing the circulation rate of the liquid steel may effectively' raise the rate of the process in RH refining. The model may be expected to offer some useful information and a reliable basis for determining the reasonable process parameters and help in optimizing the technology of desulfurization by powder injection and blowing in the RH refining of molten steel.

The refractory linings in lead furnaces are exposed to several stresses rather complex in their interaction. In the present study the magnesia-chromite brick out of a lead recycling furnace suffered from a high chemical attack by the process slag. The high CaO, BaO and sulfur bearing silicate slag, as well as a high NaO2 supply from soda resulted both in a deep-reaching infiltration of the brick microstructure and a severe corrosion of the brick components. Both the sintered magnesia and chromite were attacked chemically. The FactSage calculations showed the formation of high amounts of liquid phase in the infiltrated microstructure. Further phenomena affecting the refractory performance such as iron oxide attack, redox effects, and boron attack are also discussed in the paper. The obtained information and insights serve as a basis for improving refractory materials (i.e., choice of refractories for individual process and new developments) and consequently furnace operations.

"The more than 75 research projects funded throughout the first 10 years of the Dust Center's operation have resulted in numerous cumulative findings fulfilling the goals of the Center. These project descriptions present the methodologies and project-to-project relationships leading to their various accomplishments and demonstrate the mesh between project objectives and Center goals.To develop equipment for collecting respirable dust samples.To develop experimental methods for particle-by-particle characterization of morphology, size, and chemistry.To develop experimental methods for overall respirable dust sample characterization of size distribution, chemistry, and crystallography.The project directly addresses the Center's goals to enhance the understanding of the scientific and engineering characteristics of fine and respirable mineral particles found in mining and milling atmospheres and to establish the relationship between natural and cultural factors (mine geology, mineralogy, mining and milling methods, equipment, and control measures) in the generation of fine particles. The project also aims to contribute to the development of control mechanisms for reducing ambient respirable dust concentrations and worker exposures.The work on this project is related to similar work on Coal Mine Dust Characterization (Project No. 2701/MN1) and Characterization of Dust Particles (Project No. 4203/PS3).Airborne dust sampling was performed at the following locations: 1) a sand and gravel quarry in Southern New Hampshire, 2) a welding facility, 3) a ceramic powder facility, 4) a metal powder facility, and 5) the air in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A portable sampling box incorporating two Sierra personal cascade impactors was designed and produced. At a 2-LPM flow rate, the effective cut-off diameters of the Sierra impactors were 10.0, 6.0, 3.5, 2.0, 0.9, and 0.5 mm, respectively, for each stage, and the air passed through a PVC filter after the last stage. In addition, the sampling box contained a total respirable dust filter. The substrates were weighed carefully before and after collection, and the weight increases were recorded. All films, foils, and filters were put in the balance chamber for more than 8 hours to stabilize the temperature and humidity before weighing. A Cash 21 microbalance (±0.001 mg) was used to weigh the Mylar films, SS films, and filters."

Steelmakers worldwide agree that the most efficient and cost-effective solution in BOF steelmaking is to desulfurize the hot metal between the blast furnace and converter. Various methods are currently in use, among which the Kanbara Reactor (KR, using only lime as a reagent), Magnesium mono-injection (MMI, using only magnesium; also known as the Ukraina-Desmag process) and co-injection (using magnesium and lime/CaC2) are leading. These three hot metal desulfurization methods are compared based on metallurgy, efficiency, costs and overall performance. Both available data from literature and experience from Danieli Corus engineers is used for this study. The KR process is able to reach low sulfur concentrations (> 10 ppm) in hot metal and has lower reagent costs. However, due to higher Fe-loss and heavy wear the KR process has the highest operational costs. The Magnesium mono-injection process is very fast due to the use of the reactive magnesium as reagent. Major problems with resulfurization (sulfur levels below 50 ppm cannot be reached) and the violence of the process made that this process could never get a firm foothold in the western steel industry. The co-injection process with magnesium and lime proves to be able to combine the best of both worlds. It can reach low sulfur concentrations and desulfurize fast. Co-injection is also the most flexible and cost effective.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex (AIDs) são ligas metálicas que possuem uma microestrutura bifásica constituída por frações volumétricas aproximadas de ferrita () e austenita (). Esta microestrutura proporciona ao material uma combinação atrativa de propriedades mecânicas e de resistência à corrosão. O desbalanço das frações volumétricas destas fases pode ocorrer quando os AIDs são expostos a temperaturas elevadas, seja durante os processos de produção, soldagem ou até mesmo em condições de serviço e podem provocar alterações indesejadas nas propriedades da liga. Nesse contexto, a utilização de metodologias eficientes que permitam avaliar quantitativamente as frações dessas fases em AIDs é de grande relevância. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar e comparar os resultados da aplicação das técnicas de estereologia quantitativa e ferritoscopia para quantificar as frações de  em amostras de um aço duplex UNS S31803 (2205) submetidas a um tratamento térmico de solubilização a 1050°C e diferentes intervalos de tempo de envelhecimento a 850°C. Concluiu-se que o ferritoscópio subestima os valores da fração de , quando comparado com a estereologia quantitativa. Parâmetros como textura, distorções na rede cristalina, geometria da amostra e padrões de calibração exercem influência em sua medição. Sendo assim, a estereologia quantitativa mostrou-se como a técnica mais adequada para a quantificação de fases nos AIDs.

The focus within the economical optimization of projects, which are conducted underground, shifts more and more towards the conduction of construction work underground. Underground operations can be defined in a wide range of various projects, from underground mining tasks to the construction of engineering structures. Within these projects the conduction of construction work cannot only be defined as absolutely necessary, but sometimes also as optimizing for underground processes (e. g. installation of workshops underground to support the mining processes). Even though the conduction of underground construction might cause positive outcomes concerning the productivity, it also tends to be challenging due to local (sub-surface) conditions and influences. To minimize the risk of failure and sudden events within in the conduction of construction work underground, the tool “work preparation” shall be used. Under the given constraints, such as local influences, expected construction work and set time frame, the conduction of the construction work will be planned in advance by consideration of the construction logistics as well as the selection of a fitted construction technique. PROBLEM DEFINITION Economic Challenges - Raw Material Extraction Enterprises in the construction, mining and raw material extraction industries are increasingly under the pressure to perform economically to sustain their position on the global market. Profitability, efficiency and productivity are the basic conditions to be an active participant on the global market as well as a business partner and contractor for mining and construction projects or projects related to the extraction of raw materials. The completion of large-scale as well as common construction projects above ground has been under the pressure to minimize costs and time whilst maximizing the potential outcome, in the meanings of quality and economic gain, for more than a decade now. Whereas the construction industry has to fight the competition on the market with efficient project outcomes, the mining industry has to find ways to perform efficiently to further conduct the extraction of decreasing raw material deposits. The ongoing exploitation of existing raw material deposits to satisfy the constantly increasing raw material demands world-wide, led to the predicament that economically mineable deposits have decreased dramatically. Even tough mineral deposits do still exist on a global level, near-surface deposits decrease rapidly. Therefore, the extraction of raw materials within mining operations will be relocated further away from the surface in greater depths. With the growing distance from the surface to the mineral deposit, the extraction costs will increase many times over. With that in mind, the extraction costs will increase whilst the economic efficiency will decrease. The extraction of certain deposits will no longer be profitable with the common approach. To further extract raw materials efficiently even in greater depth, companies have to change their practice in different ways. That leads to the fact, if the deposits are in the depths, where the extraction processes won´t be economically, other (support) processes have to be in order to guaranty an economical corporate process itself. This precept will divert the focus from the actual mining process to support processes, where potential for optimization still can be found, as shown in figure 1.

Sawatzky (Atomic Energy of Canada, Ltd.)—The detailed criticism by Markowitz of my simple treatment of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 indicates that my paper was not as lucidly written as it could have been. I would therefore like to reiterate several of the main points of my proposed mechanism and describe in more detail some of the features only implied in the original paper. The distribution equation derived in my paper was stated to hold only for the case where the volume taken up by the hydride was small compared to the volume taken up by the solid solution phase, subsequent work, mentioned below, having shown it to be out by only a few percent up to a hydrogen concentration of about 3000 ppm. Of course, hydrogen in the two-phase region alone is not conserved in my treatment as pointed out by Markowitz. On the contrary, one of the important features of my proposed mechanism is that in the presence of a temperature gradient a two-phase region cannot exist over the whole specimen. For example, if the specimen is entirely a + 6 initially, then on application of a temperature gradient, a single phase (a) region at the hot surface develops from time t = 0 onwards. As mentioned in my original paper, the interface between the a and a+d regions moves toward the colder surface of the specimen with a discontinuity in hydrogen concen- tration developing at the interface and increasing with time. This interface moves at such a rate that hydrogen in the specimen as a whole is conserved. It must be pointed out that my distribution equation (Eq. [5] in Markowitz's paper) holds only for linear geometry. It is easy to show that for the cylindrical geometry of Markowitz the assumptions used in my treatment lead to

Selective carbothermic reduction is the preferred method of treatment of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust (listed hazardous waste, K061). The process maximizes the recovery of recyclable constituents by concurrent production of saleable zinc metal (directly condensed from the furnace off-gases), an innocuous, disposable iron oxide-rich slag, and some metallic iron. Results of a mineralogical investigation of a foaming slag produced during selective carbothermic reduction treatment of EAF dusts are presented. Wiistite and tricalcium silicate were identified by reflected light microscopy as the primary crystalline phases contained in a glassy matrix, but this technique failed to reveal any solid phases that could have significantly contributed to foam stability. It was concluded therefore, that the foam had been unstable, and had been primarily generated by copious gas evolution associated with the sudden reduction of the slag by an inadvertent addition of carbonaceous reductant. This is consistent with the susceptibility to foaming, when subjected to sudden excesses of carbon, of the slags produced by selective carbothermic reduction, because they still contain unreduced components such as iron oxide.

"THE SUPER CYCLE IS GONE The utopia of the rising sales volume, for mining companies from 2002-2011, was entirely due to rising production volume and prices. The Australian mining sector experienced an 18 percent annual growth rate in revenues, and 11 percent growth in prices. (1) However, EBIT remained flat during the same time period. In addition, Australian mines saw a 7 percent annual decline in both labor and capital productivity. (2) Mines in the U.S. and Canada produced similar results, whereas the world-wide mining industry has seen a productivity drop of 40% since 2001. (3) The decade “Bull Run” of rising prices was trashed by companies that chased low-quality assets while increasing debt on their balance sheet. It seemed everyone believed the “super cycle” would last forever, while completely ignoring the history of cycle downturns. Worldwide mining operations are as much as 28 percent less productive today than a decade ago, according to new McKinsey research. The results from McKinsey’s new MineLens Productivity Index (MPI), which adjusts for declining ore grades and mine cost inflation, show that the pronounced decline in productivity is evident across different commodities and is seen in most mining players and geographies. The basic management staple of controlling costs and improving the production/productivity that was lost in the excitement is now back in play. Traditional cost-cutting approaches, such as across-the-board spending cuts, layoffs, and hiring freezes are only short-term initiatives and will not permanently improve a company’s cost structure or improve long- term competitiveness. This can only be accomplished by engaging front-line employees and empowering them to make necessary improvements in their daily work. It is time for leaders to lead and develop cultures of continuous improvement within their organizations in order to sustain their mining project to the end of mine life. Successful operating managers require two different skill sets of Leadership and Management; knowing how to lead people in their organization and how to manage the work they do."

INTRODUCTION THE present study, based largely upon phase equilibrium diagrams and other theoretical considerations but nevertheless addressed primarily to the practical metallurgist, has been undertaken with a view to discovering what light can be thrown upon the role of alumina in slags. According to Liddell (23), "alumina apparently acts as .a base if much silica is present, as an acid if the silica is low, always as a nuisance." Newton and Wilson (26) state that .alumina "is never added intentionally, as it makes the slag viscous, and is generally an undesirable constituent of slags". Camp and Francis (3) sum up their views by saying, "alumina is seldom used intentionally as a flux, but it is present in nearly all raw material, hence unavoidable". One has only to read The Function of Alumina in Slags, by Henrich (I3), and the very extensive discussion that followed the presentation of his paper, to realize that, before the days of phase equilibrium diagrams, it was a very serious question indeed as to whether alumina should be calculated as a basic, acid, or neutral constituent. Opinions then differed widely, as well they might; today, even though no categorical answer can be given to the question raised, the function of alumina can be at least partly clarified by a study of the fundamental work done by the Geophysical Laboratory in Washington and by certain universities in both America and Europe. It will be a source of gratification to Canadian metallurgists and ceramists to know that work of this type is now under way in the recently organized Physical and Crystal Chemistry Section of the Mines Branch, Ottawa, and that results of practical value have in fact already been obtained.
