The Iron Ore Company (IOC) of Canada Mining and Operations Departments expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1 m × 1 m × 1 m) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment, and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine and to date has significantly improved upon baseline measures.One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion into the blastholes provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduced the infi ltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rock mass. Blast results showed reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muck piles. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realised.To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used shovel based camera technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A digital vision system (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with global positioning system (GPS) locations. A large population of digital images was analysed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

The Polokwane Smelter Complex (PSC) relies on a single 68MW high-intensity six-in-line furnace to smelt a planned 650 000 t/a dry concentrate to produce a platinum group metals (PGM)-bearing matte. As typical of a greenfields venture, considerable attention was paid to the project development and implementation stages of design, engineering, construction and commissioning. Somewhat unusual though, was the role of a dedicated multi-disciplinary "Operational Readiness" and support team, comprising the owners team and specialists from the furnace designer, HATCH, to effect a safe and rapid ramp-up to the design smelter capacity of 68MW. The challenges encountered in developing an effective partnership will be discussed. The modus operandi and roles of the "Operational Readiness" team during the design, procurement, construction and commissioning stages as well as that of the operational support team within the overall ramp-up objective will be presented. THE sixteenth annual meeting of the Woman's Aux¬iliary, A. I. M. E., was held Tuesday morning, Feb. 16, at the Engineering Societies Building. The meeting was well attended, there being 99 registered from the metropolitan area and 78 from the sections throughout the United States. Mrs. Sharpless, the secretary, read the minutes of the annual meeting held a year ago, after which Mrs. Bassett, the president, gave her address of welcome. Mrs. Bassett said in part: "I would like, at this time, to welcome you all to this, our sixteenth annual meeting, and to express my appreciation to all the national officers and members of the board of directors for their loyal support and for the excellent work done by the chairmen of sections and their members. It is with much pleasure that I look back upon my visits with the sections in Washington, Arizona, Northern and Southern California, Chicago, Colorado, Western Pennsylvania and Utah before I assumed the office of president. During the last year I have much enjoyed meeting with the sections in Boston, Washington and New York. It is our duty to see that the achievement for 1932 be equal to that of the year that has just passed."

"Geometallurgical programs require the collection of representative samples for geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical test work. Such protocols must be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The distribution, proportion and size of gold particles have a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling and test work protocols, and the gold recovery processes employed. Characterisation studies focusing on ore mineralogy, and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. High resolution X-ray computed tomography provides a non-destructive method for analysing the 3D nature of gold in rock samples. It can be used to calculate the modal abundance, particle size and distribution of gold in the sample volume. This paper presents a case study of the imaging of in situ gold particles in a high-grade gold ore. The Nick O’Time reef system comprises laminated quartz veins, which locally bear extreme grades of up to 100 oz/t gold. The mineralisation has previously been characterised from both a mineralogical and metallurgical perspective. Eight visible gold-bearing vein samples were scanned using X-ray microtomography. The upward mining method, as an effective mining method, is widely employed in close-multiple coal seams to extend the service life of coal mines and improve the recovery rate of residual coal resources. However, the upward mining feasibility of the upper coal seam is related to the height of caved zone of interlayer strata after lower coal seam extraction. Therefore, it is extremely important to determine the height of the caved zone after the lower coal seam. The No. 9 coal seam (upper coal seam) and the No. 12- 1 coal seam (lower coal seam) in the Qianjiaying coal mine are selected as the research object. The characteristics of the interlayer strata structure field, fracture field, and subsidence field are studied using UDEC numerical modeling, in which the height of the caved zone is gotten after the No. 12- 1 coal seam extraction. Furthermore, the height of the caved zone is verified by onsite detection of GPR and BTVI. In the numerical modeling, the height of the caved zone is 19.6 m. And the height of caved zone is 14.7 m and 15.4–21.2 m, respectively, by using the onsite detection of GPR and BTVI. The heights of the caved zone onsite detection results are consistent with the numerical modeling result. The No. 9 coal seam is always located above the caved zone after the No. 12- 1 coal seam extraction. Consequently, the upward mining of the No. 9 coal seam is feasible.

The Bureau of Mines recently observed its fortieth anniversary, and with the close of the fiscal year 1950 it completed 36 years of close cooperation with and helpfulness to the petroleum and natural-gas industries, whose technical problems it studies. Petroleum people likewise observed the ninetieth anniversary of the start of this truly American industry when "Colonel" Drake drilled the first well at Titusville, Pa., in 1859 (see fig. 1). Throughout the period, during which there have been many changes in the fuel and related economy of the country, this work has been carried on systematically by an organized entity of the Bureau first known as the Petroleum Division and in recent years as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Branch. Changes in the industries have been brought about partly by economic forces, partly by advances in technology, and in some measure by the impact of two world wars. As the needs of industry and the Nation have changed, so have the studies of the Bureau changed to meet these needs. Consistently, Bureau technologists and scientists have tried to keep in step with progressive movements; frequently, in fact, have taken the lead. Wherever possible, they have looked far ahead in their program of research, at the same time recognizing the needs of the hour.

Neste processo a região da emenda pode sofrer choque térmico devido à umidade presente no solo. Este trabalho visa demonstrar a viabilidade da imediata inserção (‘cravação’) no solo de juntas entre perfis de aço ASTM A572 Grau 50, efetuadas através da operação de soldagem com eletrodo revestido (E 7018), simulada através de uma condição de maior criticidade pelo processo de arame tubular.

"The management of acid rock drainage( ARD) to prevent impact when tailings are disposed of in the environment requires understanding of the phenomena giving rise to acidic drainage, a rigorous evaluation of the weathering characteristics of the tailings, and the successful implementation of control measures that will be effective in the long term. This paper provides a brief theoretical background to the complex reactions taking place in mill tailings containing residual sulfide minerals which must be appreciated to enable waste characterization program to be effective in predicting the future behavior of the tailings and in designing control methods which will work. "INTRODUCTION The mineral found in natural-chromite deposits is never pure Fe0.Cr203, but rather one in which the Fe0 and Cr203 are in part replaced by Mg0 and A1203, respectively. The purest gravity concentrates from many domestic de¬posits consist of a mineral referred to as ""picotite,"" in which this isomorphous replacement is such that the ratio of chromium to iron is low. The Bureau of Nines has investigated methods of chemically beneficiating ores that contain too much iron to be classed as ""high-grade"" chromite 3/ Early investigations 4/ demonstrated that high-iron chromite or picotite ores can be roasted with carbon to obtain selective reduction of the contained iron, and that most of this reduced iron can be removed by acid-leaching the roast products to produce residues of higher chromium-to-iron ratios. tests 5/ indicated that commercially acceptable reaction rates cannot be obtained at roasting temperatures below 1,3000 C., using solid carbon as reducing agent. By this high-temperature reduction and subse¬quent acid-leaching, however, all ores investigated, regardless of the original composition, readily yielded residues considerably better than the minimum specifications for high-grade chromite.In an effort to obtain satisfactory reduction of chromite at lower temperatures, liquid and gaseous seducing agents were tested with varying success. Of the several reducing agents used, methane appeared to be the most promising and was shown to be highly effective at temperatures between 1,000º and 1,100º C., roughly 300º below the roasting temperatures necessary in solid carbon reduction. Further experiments indicated that mixtures of methate with some diluent (hydrogen or other nonoxidizing gas) gave better reduction than did methane alone."

"Demand for solar cells is increasing linearly throughout the world. Last year production totaled 3000 tons worldwide. The market size of solar silicon is expected to increase further because of international ""political"" demand to reduce carbonaceous emission from energy consumed. Most elemental silicon is produced by the carbon reduction of Silica in an electric arc furnace. Purity of silicon at this stage is 90-99%. Major impurities are Fe, Ti, Ca· and Al, and minor ones are P, B and carbon. The oxidizing metallurgical process is no longer effective to remove transitfon metals because those are less noble to silicon. Nonmetallic impurities such as phosphorus and boron must be reduced to 0.001ppm for semiconductor use. The most common process for high purity silicon is the Siemens C process, which is basically distillation of hydro-chlorinated silicon followed by CVD of SiHCl3. The cost of such silicon is expensive to allow its popular use in solar cells. Currently scrap silicon -of semiconductors is used for this; however, the supply-of that scrap is limited to just a portion of semiconductor production.In this paper world demand for silicon will be reviewed and some of the processes proposed summarized.IntroductionSilicon is element 14 in atomic number and has an atomic weight of 28.0855. Little elemental silicon is found in the earth, and it is mostly found as oxides or silicate. The Clark number of silicon is very large and the second in its number. If we were discussing the volatility of silicon element on the globe, we would never worry about it. However, it is very difficult to obtain pure elemental silicon because a high purity silicon compound is very rare. In most cases these are silica (silicon oxide SiO2). As shown in Table 1, there are many grades of silica ore classified mainly by their content of iron and alumina."

Groundwater control is generally an important consideration and significant source of risk during most tunneling projects. Proper baselining of groundwater conditions requires: 1) a thorough understanding of the geological environment; 2) a focused site investigation; 3) identification of construction and adjacent property damage risks associated with inflows and short and long term piezometric level changes; and 4) consideration of contractual issues including restrictions on means and methods and pay items for associated work. This paper provides an overview of groundwater baselining issues and risks based on selected design studies and construction case histories.

ThRee great deposits of iron-ore, in Camaguey and Oriente Provinces, Cuba, are well known to me through careful field-examinations executed in the years 1901 and 1907. In 1901 I visited the Cubitas iron-ore district, which lies about 12 miles distant from the city of Camaguey in a northerly direction, and the Mayari district, which includes the Sierra Nipe, lying opposite Nipe bay on the north side of Oriente Province. In 1907 I again visited the Cubitas district, and also made a sojourn of several days in the Moa district, where the extensive deposits of iron-ore were observed and studied. The observations of 1901 were made under the auspices of the then Military Governor of Cuba, Gen. Leonard Wood, and my conclusions concerning the value of these deposits were incorporated in a report.' The examination of certain denouncements of iron-ore in the Moa district in 1907 was made in behalf of iron-masters operating in the United States, to whom I reported the existence of large amounts of easily-workable limonitic iron-ore, properly designated " brown iron-ore " in the terminology now current among iron-ore producers in the United States. In 1908 I published a paper entitled, Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, outlining the occurrence and origin of the surfi-cia1 ores existing in the Cubitas, Mayari, and Moa districts.2

Unstable rock failure or rock bursting is one of the most dangerous problems in deep hard rock mines. This type of failure, that occurs uncontrollably, is associated with a significant release of strain energy from the surrounding rock. In this study, the numerical simulation of unstable rock failure was carried out using the three-dimensional explicit Lagranian finite-volume finite difference method to identify the onset and location of unstable failure events in the model. On this basis, a numerical simulation of mine pillars with width-to-height ratios of 0.5, 2 and 3 was performed. A criterion was developed, based on the calculation of the elastic strain energy, to determine the prone areas for the initiation of rockburst in the models. The results of this study showed that, in softer loading systems, due to large amounts of stored elastic strain energy, an unstable equilibrium is established, which leads to the rapid transfer of strain energy to the rock in the form of violent failure. It was also found that the unstable failure starts at the corners and free surface of the model. The new criterion developed in this study may help predict the occurrence of rockbursts in slender pillars and the design of pillars to control human and financial losses caused by this phenomenon.

The successful implementation of a new technology in an underground production mine requires many challenges to be overcome. These challenges include mine hardening of new technology, mitigation of safety risks and hazards, mine operation support, and technology transfer to mine staff. In the end, the majority of these challenges relate to the human aspects of implementation. The approach selected to overcome these challenges must be customized and appropriate for each unique situation. This paper outlines the approach used to address these challenges as part of successful implementation and resulting demonstration of the hydrogen fuel cell locomotive at the Placer Dome (CLA) Limited, Campbell Mine. This technology demonstration at Campbell Mine is critical for determining technical, regulatory and implementation aspects to be incorporated into future fuel cell prototypes such as the LHD project.

"8.1. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this chapter is not to provide precedents or examples of provisions, but rather to offer some comments that may be worth considering in the negotiation or review of an agreement. These comments are not intended to be exhaustive. It must also be noted that, although the chapter is written in the context of a common law joint venture, the concepts and concerns for the most part apply equally to a corporation that is owned by only a few shareholders for the purpose of participating in the project held by the corporation.The corporation has the advantage of having much of its organization established by local corporate law, but the particular wishes of the shareholders will appear in a shareholders’ agreement. The principal differences will be surprisingly small, save for the acquisition provisions that appear in a farm-in agreement1 and the substantial portion of the joint venture agreement devoted to creating and organizing the joint venture entity. Where the joint venture agreement refers to venturers and committees, the shareholders’ agreement will refer to shareholders and the board of directors, but both will have to deal with such basic matters as decision-making, default, dispute resolution, first refusals, funding, and carrying out work on the project. For convenience, this chapter usually refers to “venturers”, which may be taken to include shareholders.Negotiations give rise to many varying circumstances and concerns, and the main asset of the negotiator is an open and flexible mind. A desired result can often be accomplished indirectly in circumstances where the other side has adopted an inflexible position on a suggested approach. As precedents and standard forms tend to focus a negotiator’s thinking, they can be counterproductive. It is after the deal has been agreed to that a precedent can be of great assistance to the draftsman.The concepts are arranged in alphabetical order for convenience, not to suggest their sequence or position in an agreement or their relative importance. An agreement should adopt a progression of subjects in what the parties consider a logical sequence to read and work with. However, experience has indicated that it is best to set out in a single article the substance of the deal (i.e. the terms relating to the farm-in and what the acquiring party has to do to acquire his interest), preferably near the beginning of an agreement. The acquisition of the interest is, after all, the first order of business. The joint venture provisions will then follow in a reasonable sequence. It is also worthwhile to devote a single article to any special provisions that may apply during the earn-in period. For example, it may be provided that, although all work is to be done by the acquiring party as operator (with the duty of care, liability, and reporting requirements as set out in the joint venture sections of the agreement), but during the acquisition period, the acquiring party, acting as operator, may be at liberty to do such work as he wishes, without the need for any committee or other approvals, and committee meetings may be suspended.2An agreement is divided into paragraphs and articles to make it easier for the parties to read and understand, and to assist a party in finding “that provision” when the need arises. A comprehensive table of contents will also assist the parties who must work under an agreement. An added benefit of a table of contents is that in preparing it, the draftsman sees the overall structure of the agreement and will often catch and correct flaws."

The United States Cement, along with other industries, is being devastated by an unprecedented penetration of domestic markets by imported products. The overriding questions are: 1. Have foreign manufacturers improved their processes to an extent they can outperform U.S. producers in their home markets? 2. Is it gross inefficiency on the part of the U.S. producers that is allowing foreign producers to be capable of replacing a local U.S. producer in his normal home market? 3. Is there a combination of the first two questions that economically justifies this type of market overrun? The answer is a simple NO!. In a fair trade market atmosphere, U.S. producers are definitely competitive.

The Holmes Safety Association is an offspring of the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association which was organized in Washington, D. C., in 1916 at a meeting of representatives of twenty-four leading mining associations connected with every branch of the United States mineral industries. The purpose of the meeting was to do honor to the memory of Joseph A. Holmes, one of the founders of the United States Bureau of Mines and its first director, whose death had occurred the year before on July 12, 1915. In deference to what was believed would have been the expressed wish of this great humanitarian and benefactor of the mineral industries, it was decided to establish a national safety organization to cover the mineral indus¬tries exclusively; out of respect for his memory and service, the organization was named the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association. On receiving requests from several mining districts, in 1922 a number of chapters ware established in several mining States.

This report describes a program to evaluate the feasibility of determining roof features which occur in United States coal mines from changes in bolting machine drilling parameters. The ultimate purpose of this effort is the development of an instrumented roof bolting machine which can detect hazardous roof conditions and/or indicate when the existing roof control plan is inadequate. A survey of hazardous conditions occurring in United States coal mines is included, along with the slang expressions for these conditions, and their relative degree of hazard. Specific machine parameters are identified for detecting the specific roof conditions. Measurement concepts are proposed using readily available instrumentation in most cases. Various systems are evaluated and tradeoffs presented. An implementation plan is proposed for developing a prototype system and using it in an operating coal mine.

HPGRs have since introduced in the 1980s (Kellerwessel, 1993; Schönert, 1988), now become integral comminution units at several minerals processing plants around the world. Even though a lot of the initial issues concerning performance, availability and wear have been addressed and solved there are still phenomena and aspects which can be improved and understood further. Schönert and Sander (2002) presented experimental results and a mechanistic model including the internal force dynamics between the rollers and the compacted bed. They derived expressions for the pressure distribution involving most of the influencing terms and effects. However, in order to solve the differential equations several of the terms vanish by assumptions. The Schönert and Sander model reflects the experimental data in many aspects but the predicted shear force distinctly deviates from the experimental results at the angular position of the peak pressure level. This finding suggests that the particle to particle interaction and breakage process in the different zones seen in Figure 1 are complex and difficult to model using analytical models. A numerical modelling approach using DEM does not require the same amount of assumptions and simplifications of boundary conditions. Hence such modelling may provide further knowledge and vital understanding. In this paper the breakage process is simulated in order to investigate the shear slip behaviour and how it relates to different operating variables. A laboratory scale HPGR corresponding to the experimental setup used by Schönert (2002) have been modelled in EDEM (DEM-Solutions). The bonded particle model (BPM) is used for modelling quartz particles (Potyondy, 2004). The breakage model strength parameters are calibrated against interparticle breakage experiments in an Instron 400RD compression device. The contact model parameters are calibrated using calibration methods developed by Quist (2015). The floating roller dynamics are modelled using a spring-damper system. Results present insights regarding the interparticle slip behaviour as well as the frictional tangential force distribution on the rollers. The simulated roller pressure distribution shows good correspondence with previously reported findings in the literature.

Dado que la concentración de sulfuros de fierro: pirita y pirrotita aplicados gravimétricamente en espirales Humphreys obtuvo resultados óptimos tanto en lo económico como en lo metalúrgico, surge la necesidad de construir una planta concentradora de sulfuros de hierro en la Cerro de Pasco Corporation utilizando como cabeza los relaves de la planta de flotación de minerales de cobre. En este sentido, el objetivo del texto describe el proceso de dicha concentración, donde señala que la alimentación a la nueva planta es una pulpa que requiere mantenimiento de supervisión y mantenimiento, generando un concentrado de fierro a un costo de s/.6. 00 T. C. S. contra s/. 105. 00 T. C. S.; costo del concentrado de fierro producido por flotación en 1961. Asimismo, las diferencias de gravedad específica entre sulfuros de fierro y ganga cuarcífera han ido aprovechados para lograr un ejemplo donde la concentración gravimétrica, actúa con éxito frente al actualmente difundido proceso de concentración por flotación.
