Based on the mineralogical characteristics and mineral processing techniques required, gold ores can be classified into 12 types, including gold placers, quartz vein-lode ores, oxidized ores, silver-rich ores, iron oxide copper gold ores, porphyry copper gold ores, iron sulphide ores, arsenic sulphide ores, antimony sulphide ores, bismuth sulphide ores, telluride ores and carbonaceous sulphide ores. The bulk mineralogy and gold deportment of each ore type is different and may have a significant impact on ore processing and metal extraction. This paper summarizes the bulk mineralogy and gold deportment in some major types of gold ores and discusses the potential impact of gold deportment on gold metallurgy.

"Tell us how you got involved in mining and about your career path.My dad was a coal miner and my uncle was a metallurgist, so when I enrolled at Penn State’s New Kensington Campus, I chose the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences — exact majors didn’t get picked till the end of your sophomore year. Penn State New Ken had an associate degree in mining program and one of the guys in my carpool was going to take Mining 30 in the evening and the other guy (mechanical engineer) was also able to take an evening class. I didn’t want to break up the carpool, so I took Mining 30, complete with essay tests. I could write, so I did well, and the professor said I should go into mining engineering. Fast forward to the end of the next term at University Park, and I realized there wasn’t enough chemistry in mining. Switching to metallurgy would have meant another term at that point, so Dr. Lovell, my advisor, trotted me down the hall and to the next building and said I was a mineral processor. That stuck. I was a summer student at U.S. Steel Research between my junior and senior year and they paid for my master’s degree — all about clay and macerals in coal flotation. During that time, the steel industry tanked, and I thought a Ph.D. would be a good idea — I could always teach at the university level if I had those credentials. The Electric Power Research Institute had a Coal Cleaning Test Facility in Homer City, PA, and I conducted my Ph.D. research on rate and residence time in conventional coal froth flotation cells there and at a local cleaning plant. I went to work at the test facility in 1987 (later CQ Inc.) and stayed there until I started PrepTech Inc. in 1997. PrepTech offers some consulting services for coal cleaning plants and sells mineral processing equipment, mostly to coal companies. I can’t believe it’s been 21 years.And what about your SME career?Of course, I was a student SME member at Penn State. We used many of the SME books in class, so who wouldn’t want the student discount? While in Homer City, I became involved with the Appalachian Plateau Subsection of the Pittsburgh Section. We’d hold quarterly meetings with interesting speakers and had good attendance. I was the secretary. I’m still the secretary and also get the bank statements. We’ll need to close that out some time, but I guess I’ve been hoping for resurgence in the Indiana/Cambria/ Somerset area."

A small quarry blast was conducted with a maximum of 90 pounds per delay and shortly afterwards, area residents sensed ground motion and building shaking indicative of an earthquake. In addition, seismometers up to 500 miles (800 km) away recorded a magnitude 2.8 earthquake located in the area. Positioned in a seismically inactive area, southern Minnesota is not known for earthquakes. The earthquake was originally described by the USGS to be a surface blast at the quarry. Analysis showed that the earthquake occurred shortly (approximately seven seconds) after the quarry blast some distance away and well below the surface. This paper describes the evaluation of the “seismic events” including the blast, the following earthquake, initial governmental response, and provides the framework for assessing the relationship between the blast and the earthquake. The paper also discusses management of large volume claims from a complex event and presents a claims management strategy with best practices.

Gold leaching from a commercial cyanide-amenable gold ore was studied at 25°C using sodium bisulfide-hydrogen sulfide solutions containing elemental sulfur. Gold extraction from the ore using 0.55 M NaSH, 4.1 atm (60 PSI) H2S, 1 g/L S8 and 26% solids by weight was about as good as the best extraction obtained by cyanidation. Maximum extraction was achieved in roughly 48 hours. Sulfur dissolves in the bisulfide solutions to form a mixture of polysulfides. Simple speciation calculations indicate that gold solubility as bisulfide complexes should be roughly ten times higher than in the absence of added zerovalent sulfur. The principal bisulfide complex is believed to be [Au(HS)2]-. Gold dissolution is favoured by increasing HS- concentration and by increasing H25 pressure. Polysulfide complexes of gold are also likely to be formed, and may contribute substantially to gold leaching. Two experiments using pure gold were also performed. Up to 100 mg/L gold was dissolved in 140 hours using 0.55 M NaSH, 1 g/L added elemental sulfur and 6.2 atm H2S.

In addition, total energy consumption in the Nation in 1972 is compared with consumption in 1971 and 1973 (preliminary data).

The mining industry faces concurrent pressures of reducing water use, energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in coming years. However, the interactions between water and energy use, as well as GHG emissions have largely been neglected in modelling studies to date. In addition, investigations tend to focus on the unit operation scale, with little consideration of whole-of-site or regional scale effects.This paper presents an application of a hierarchical systems model (HSM) developed to represent water, energy and GHG emissions fluxes at scales ranging from the unit operation, to the site level, to the regional level. The model allows for the linkages between water use, energy use and GHG emissions to be examined in a flexible and intuitive way, so that mine sites can predict energy and emissions impacts of water use reduction schemes and vice versa. This paper examines whether this approach can also be applied to the regional scale with multiple mine sites.The model is used to conduct a case study of several coal mines in the Bowen Basin, Australia, to compare the utility of centralised and decentralised mine water treatment schemes. The case study takes into account geographical factors (such as water pumping distances and elevations), economic factors (such as capital and operating cost curves for desalination treatment plants) and regional factors (such as regionally varying climates and associated variance in mine water volumes and quality).The case study results indicate that treatment of saline mine water incurs a trade-off between water and energy use in all cases. However, significant cost differences between centralised and decentralised schemes can be observed in a simple economic analysis. Further research will examine the possibility for deriving model up-scaling algorithms to reduce computational requirements.CITATION:Keir, G and Woodley, A, 2013. Manganese ore bodies of Banswara Mn belt were classified into stratiform and stratabound types, based on their mode of occurrence, distribution, and their chemical characters. These ore bodies generally composed of braunite, pyrolusite, cryptomelane/ psilomelane, wad, etc. The stratiform-type Mn ore bodies are conformable with the associated host rocks (Mn phyllite, etc.) and occurred in the form of layers, bands, etc., which are variable in their shape and size. These ore bodies are also strongly folded with the enclosing host rocks. The others, which are stratabound-type Mn ore bodies, also showed an intimate association with the associated host rocks. These types of ore bodies occurred in thin layers, pockets, lenses, stringers, etc. The classified ore bodies are confined with Kalinjara formation of Aravalli Supergroup of Paleoproterozoic age. The ore bodies are structurally controlled and well associated with phyllite, schist, limestone, quartzite, etc. The stratiform-type ore bodies constitute a marginal to low Mn grade and are also characterized by lower Mn content (26.19–39.24%) along with the Mn/Fe ratio of 7.16–12.23, while the stratabound-type Mn ore bodies are rich in Mn (35.92–49.64%) along with the higher Mn/Fe ratio of 14.15–23.97. However, the poor Mn grade along with high siliceous impurities of Banswara Mn deposits is subjected to them for intermittent mining activities in the past and, consequently, did not attract the scientific and industrial community for the evaluation of these resources. Therefore, the authors attempted this study in a scientific and systematic manner (mode of occurrence/distribution and possible methods for evaluation/exploration) to evaluate the potential of existed and newer Mn deposit resources in the Banswara Mn belt. The whole findings would be very much helpful for exploration/ mining geologist along with other concerned, to completely evaluate these Mn deposits in the future.

Si consideramos que los costos de perforación y disparo representan una parte significativa del costo total de la operación de minado, no es posible ignorar avances tecnológicos que ofrecen substanciales reducciones en el costo. "Underground coal gasification (UCG) is an unconventional mining method that converts coal in situ into a fuel gas that can be used for electricity generation. Residue products from UCG have the potential to leach into surrounding groundwaters. The geochemistry and leaching dynamics of these products are explored in this study. The products include char, ash, and the heat-affected zone in the surrounding rocks. Core samples from the pilot plant at Majuba are the first ever to be recovered from a UCG cavity in Africa, and they give key insights into the geochemistry of the gasification zone. Mineralogical and chemical analyses were performed on the samples, and acid-base accounting (ABA) was used to predict the acid-producing capacity of the gasification zone, particularly for char samples. Some of the char contained pyrite, although not all samples were acid-producing as determined by the ABA analysis. The ABA results showed that some of the unburned coal has moderate levels of sulphur, which could be the driving medium for acidic conditions. The ABA analysis indicated that water in contact with the gasification zone would eventually have a pH lower than 7, which could lead to acid rock drainage. These results form part of a preliminary investigation into the geochemistry of the reaction zone, post gasification. IntroductionUnderground coal gasification (UCG) is an unconventional mining method that converts coal in situ into a fuel gas that can be used for industrial purposes, including electricity generation. The gasification process leads to the formation of a cavity composed of char, rubble, and void space (Bhutto, Bazmi, and Zahedi, 2013). Residue products from UCG have the potential to leach into groundwater. These products include char (devolatilized coal), which can generate acid rock drainage (ARD). ARD is caused by the oxidation of sulphide minerals, which acidifies the leachate, thus increasing the solubility of some environmentally toxic metals (As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn, etc.) (Bouzahzah et al., 2015).The main source of ARD is oxidation of sulphide-bearing minerals due to interactions with oxygen, water, and microorganisms (Simate and Ndlovu, 2014; Kefeni, Msagati, and Mamba, 2017; Bouzahzah et al., 2015). Although ARD occurs naturally, it can be enhanced by mining activities that escalate exposure of sulphide minerals to water, air, and bacteria (Simate and Ndlovu, 2014). At the Majuba pilot plant, the unburned coal remaining in the cavity has been in contact with groundwater since the gasifier was shut down in 2013. It is possible that in a commercial UCG plant, most of the coal will be consumed and no unburnt coal will be left in the cavity. Most of the sulphur will be converted to H2S during the gasification process and transported with the syngas to surface, where it can be removed and captured as elemental sulphur."

A very high-grade calcite deposit located in northern Norway consists of CaCO3 ore with minor silicate and sulphide impurities. Cationic (Tallow-1,3-diaminopropane, Duomeen T) collector has been used in the purification of calcite by flotation with an aim of achieving calcite concentrate for its use in value-added products in a variety of industries. The feasibility of sulphide flotation from calcite by this cationic collector has been initially judged from Hallimond flotation and zeta potential on pure mineral systems and the results illustrate the removal of sulphide from calcite ore at neutral pH region. The adsorption mechanism of diamine on both the sulphide minerals was found to be the same by zeta potential studies. The variations in zeta potential are in good agreement with the adsorption of diamine molecular and ionic species as a function of pH. FTIR studies also showed the adsorption of diamine species in agreement with the zeta potential and Hallimond flotation results. Furthermore, the removal of sulphide impurities with selective flotation by diamine collector was performed in bench-scale flotation with the calcite ore and the results indeed showed that the calcite concentrate could meet the quality requirements for its use in the paper industry for coating and filler purposes.

Respect for mining in Botswana is long-standing. This article looks at Africa's most transparent mining regime and some of its ambitious plans. Botswana's mining industry value is forecast to average 5.2% growth from 2014-2018 with solid growth for the diamond sector and acceleration of coal production. Respect for the country's mining regime is maintained in the Fraser Institute 2014 annual survey where Botswana occupies the 26th position of 122 administrations. When only wide-spaced drilling is available, for example at concept, prefeasibility and feasibility stages, properly implemented linear estimation (including ordinary kriging) predicts grade tonnage relationships that are over-smoothed compared to final production estimates (and production). Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation are alternative geostatistical approaches that can provide more reliable estimates of the recoverable tonnage and grade from wide-spaced drilling. Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation have been rarely used on iron ore deposits. However, these techniques have had wide application in other commodities such as gold and base metals. Conditional simulation has been used in the iron ore industry (eg Guibal et al, 1997); however, its use here is outlined as a means of generating non-linear estimates, not just its use for variability and drill spacing analysis. As a rule, regardless of commodity, the decision to use non-linear geostatistics will necessitate increased skills and require more time. This decision must therefore be justified in terms of cost-benefit. Such cost-benefit analysis is not straightforward, and to help an approach for determining when linear estimates are inadequate is presented. Recommend in this paper is a well-established non-linear geostatistical approach, the global ædiscrete Gaussian modelÆ (DGM) of change of support, as a tool to establish whether moving from linear to non-linear estimates will materially improve estimate results. Also discussed is the additional use of DGM as a block model validation tool. One specific factor contributing to the lack of application of non-linear geostatistical methods in iron is the added difficulties that arise when conditional simulation and non-linear estimates are required to reproduce the numerous and often important correlations between variables in iron ore deposits. Consequently, presented in the paper is a synoptic review of non-linear estimation and simulation methodologies applicable to correlated variables.

"INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is located approximately 26 miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico and is the nation’s first underground geologic repository for transuranic (TRU) and TRU-mixed waste (see Figure 1). The WIPP facility was opened for operation in 1999 when the first TRU waste shipment arrived at the WIPP facility for disposal.WIPP facility does not employ typical production aspects of a conventional mine. Instead, the mining focus is on the quality of the excavation to ensure safe disposal of TRU and TRU-mixed waste (Walls, 1991). GEOLOGY WIPP underground repository is mined within a 2,000 feet-thick bedded-halite formation (Salado Formation) (see Figure 2). The WIPP underground repository is located approximately 2,150 feet beneath the surface near the center of the Salado Formation. Geologic criterion and site-selection factors evaluated for the selection of the repository included topography, depth, thickness, lateral extent, lithology, stratigraphy, structure, erosion, dissolution, subsidence, surface water, aquifers, hydrologic transport, climatic fluctuations, manmade penetrations (U.S. Department of Energy, 1980).FACILITY DESIGN Profit did not play a major role in the WIPP’s conception like in a conventional mine. This was due to the extensive amount of additional regulations and safety controls that had to be built into the WIPP facility. Since it is nuclear and hazardous waste disposal facility, it must meet certain federal and state requirements for TRU-mixed waste. One of the major regulatory drivers for the WIPP facility is defined in the WIPP Land Withdrawal Act (LWA). One of the requirements in the WIPP LWA requires the DOE to submit documentation of continued compliance with Title 40 CFR Part 191, Subparts B, and C. These standards are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The DOE must submit documentation of continued compliance (recertification) with these regulations every five years. In addition to the LWA, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is another major regulatory driver for the WIPP facility. Since the WIPP facility is categorized as a “Miscellaneous Unit” under 40 CFR, it must meet extensive environmental performance standards. These standards are defined in the WIPP Hazardous Waste Facility Permit (HWFP). The HWFP defines the terms and conditions that the Secretary of the New Mexico Environment Department has determined necessary to protect human health and the environment (U.S. Department of Energy and Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC, 2015)."

Like the caboose on the end of a long freight train L made up of mineral and metal processing and consuming industries, the mining industry progresses according to the movement of the train to which it is coupled. Sometimes the caboose rolls smoothly; occasionally it bumps along on the ties; almost always it is under criticism from someone for being too small, too large, too expensive, foolishly progressive, or hopelessly out of date. We who ride in the caboose are used to the rough by now, but it is nice now and then to have a bit of the smooth. Last year the train of industrial production rolled ahead swiftly and smoothly, and, except for a hot-box caused by strikes in copper mines, so did the caboose. As is brought out elsewhere in this issue, the outlook for 1956 is for more of the same.

The objective of the present study is to evaluate and compile the relevant phase equilibria and thermodynamic data reported in the literature for the ternary system Cu-Fe-S. It is hoped that the results presented here will be useful to practising engineers and scientists in industry who are attempting to improve continually the existing processes of copper extraction and refining. At the same time, the present work will undoubtedly reveal the lack of some basic data which are important for the improvement of our existing extractive processes. Lastly, this work will also show that the development of theoretical models for the alloy phases in the Cu-Fe-S system is essential before complete consistency between the phase equilibria and the thermodynamic data can be achieved.

This paper gives the results of a reconnaissance of the mining districts of Mineral County, Nev., made during the month of June and the first 10 days in October 1936.3/ During the field work virtually all the mining districts in the county were visited and many data were obtained relative to active and inactive properties. The report covers the location of the various mining districts, nature of deposits, ownership, information on past and current activity, data on economic conditions, and general information likely to be useful to operators and investors and others interested in mining. The geology of the deposits is discussed only in a general way. For nearly three-quarters of a century mining tin Mineral County has been the principal if not the only industry of importance. At times it has reached a very low ebb, and at other times it has been attended by the wild excitement that usually accompanies valuable discoveries of precious metals.
