This paper discusses small-scale lade gold mining and milling. It is abstracted from a bulletin being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines entitled "Equipping, Developing, and Operating Small Gold Mines." Gold is widely distributed in the mountainous regions of the United States; relatively few deposits, however, can be profitably worked on a large scale. Because of the high intrinsic value of gold, ores containing this metal may be very rich; hence it is possible to mine profitably smaller bodies of gold ore than of the more common metals.

C. Hertzler The difference of means of milling characteristics by rock and ore type is tested in a statistical manner in the paper. The null hypothesis being tested is that the sample means of two different populations are equal. It is assumed that the null hypothesis is true when performing the test. Because of this, acceptance of this hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are equal (or there is no significant difference between the sample means), not that the samples come from the same population, as the author asserts. Rejection of the null hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are not equal. A P value for this test is reported in Table 2 and is incorrectly identified as the probability that the two samples came from different populations. Actually, what was recorded was 100(1 - p) where p is the usual p-value. The usual p-value measures, on a scale of zero to one, the extent to which the data agree with the null hypothesis. It is the probability of observing a value of the test statistic (Z score) that is at least as contradictory to the null hypothesis as the one computed from the sample data (McClave and Dietrich II, 1982). The author makes no mention of the fact that were these tests to be conducted together, the chances of determining that the null hypothesis is not true when it is really true are increased considerably (Snedecor and Cochran, 1980). This is a multiple comparisons problem and should be dealt with accordingly. The usual methods involve adjusting the level of the individual tests. Table 2 reports an incorrect 100(1 - p) value in the comparison of concentrate grades for other rock types with .30 to .69 % Cu vs other rock types with .70 + % Cu; 86 % should be 98.6 %. Although the article can be criticized for poor data presentation and discussion of that data, the point the author makes regarding the use of these statistics in the ore reserve estimation process is well taken. It does not appear that inaccuracies in the statistical interpretations have hindered that usefulness. Miller After reading Ms. Hertzler's comments, it appears that the differences noted were basically semantics. If the paper is ever presented at a math symposium, some changes will be needed. When deciding the best way to present the data to mining engineers and geologists, I decided that presenting the probability that the two sample groupings came from different populations (reverse to the Null hypothesis) was easier and would require less verbage to explain. Hence, the 100(1 - p) difference which was noted. Ideally, I would have preferred to give the recovery and concentrate grades, then comment which ones had significant differences. Unfortunately, Kennecott Corp. did not grant permission to publish the ore body's actual recoveries and concentrate grades. The conclusion is that there was, as expected, a relationship between the ore's geologic properties and the metallurgical properties, and by determining this relationship, the overall mineral model was greatly improved.

The development and distribution of gold placers in Otago û Southland is related primarily to the evolution and architecture of three distinctly different drainage networks that developed during and since Gondwana breakup: +        Late-Gondwana û Pre-marine; +        Middle Tertiary Post-marine; and +        Modern. Late Gondwana û Pre-marine drainage was dominantly recti-linear and controlled by normal faults and sedimentary basins formed before or during Gondwana breakup. Placers formed dominantly in 2nd order transverse drainages with primary sources in their catchments. This drainage network was progressively destroyed by inundation and burial by marine strata during Late Cretaceous û Middle Tertiary marine transgression that ultimately covered most of New Zealand. Middle Tertiary Post-marine drainage evolved on and incised the newly emergent low-relief landscape during regional marine regression driven by development of the present plate boundary through South Island. Most of Central Otago was drained into Southland and to the southern coast via a large braided river system with an extensive network of tributaries in its Central Otago reach. East Otago was drained by several smaller systems. Placers formed dominantly in proximal and medial reaches of 1st and 2nd order drainages with primary or pre-existing placers in their catchments. This drainage network was destroyed by inundation and burial of the Central Otago reach of the major system by lacustrine strata following tectonic damning of its middle reach by range uplift and development of a lake complex that covered >5000km2 of Central Otago. The Modern drainage network evolved from the Middle Tertiary network through complex response, firstly to uplift of NW-trending and NE-trending ranges throughout the region since the Late Miocene, and secondly to the effects of major Pleistocene glacial advances in West Otago. Placers formed in alluvial fans at range margins, proximal and medial pre-glacial fluvial systems and glacial outwash sequences. Evolution of each of these drainage networks has been accompanied by widespread sedimentary recycling of alluvial gold from older to younger placers, augmented locally by input of first-cycle gold derived from erosion of primary sources in the repeatedly exhumed basement rocks.

During the initial process of mining a longwall working face, it is often found that the roof will not collapse readily, which increases the risk of later roof collapse disasters. Explosive and hydraulic fracturing are common roof weakening techniques; however, they have certain limitations. In the present study, CO2 fracturing was used for roof weakening during the initial mining phase in the Changcun coal mine, China, which is a novel strategy. First, by analyzing the lithological characteristics of the working face and applying combined beam theory, the breaking spans of the top coal, immediate roof, and main roof were determined before weakening. An F-35 CO2 fracturing device with a rated pressure of 270 MPa was used, which provides fracturing energy equivalent to 0.968 kg of TNT. The fracture radius of the main roof was studied by ANSYS/ LS-DYNA combined with the hanging roof-breaking theory to determine the optimal layout of CO2 fracturing drills. The results show that the breaking spans of the top coal, immediate roof, and main roof were reduced by 3.99 m, 7.66 m, and 22.03 m, respectively. The main roof collapsed as the working face advanced, eliminating the chance of later roof collapse disasters. Compared with hydraulic fracturing and explosives, CO2 fracturing is safer and more practical, giving it significant application potential.

Post-super-cycle mining executives must exploit every aspect of the value chain to deliver continued value to stakeholders. Integrating enterprise-wide information technology with value-chain-wide operational technology, known as IT-OT integration, is essential to extracting optimal results from the value chain. Mining companies trail other industries with respect to IT-OT integration across the value chain. Manual data consolidation and value chain optimization using spreadsheets and human intelligence are widespread practices within the industry. Increasing automation with smart devices and controllers means the volume and velocity of data will soon increase beyond human abilities. Enterprise Architecture provides a method for aligning information technology with the business operating model to successfully implement IT-OT integration. A Value Realization Framework (VRF) provides a means for predictable traceable value realization from IT investments and assets. With these principles, frameworks, models, methods, and techniques, mining organizations can accomplish IT-OT integration that provides their executives with a strategic value-chain-aligned platform for sustained value realization over the long term.

"The Bureau of Mines exploratory work on the Bear Lodge, Wyo., fluorite property wider the strategic minerals Program was completed in November 1944. Exploration consisted of surface trenching, shaft sinking, and drifting at shallow depth. Doak C. Cox of the Federal Geological Survey visited the area during the latter part of 1944 and napped the Bear Lodge property.The Bear Lodge property is situated in the Black Hilts National Forest in eastern Crook County, Wyo., 6 miles north of the community of Sundance (fig. 1). Sundance is 29 miles northwest of Upton, Wyo., a station on the Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy Railroad and 43 miles southwest of a siding on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, 3 miles south of Belle Fourche, S. Dak. U. S. Highway 14 passes through Sundance in an east-west direction. Sundance may be reached from the south over U. S. Highway 85 and Wyoming State Highway 585.The Bear Lodge property i a situated in the Boer Lodge Mountains in secs. 15, 22, and 23, T. 52 N., R. 63W., 6th P.M.The topography in the vicinity of the fluorite deposits consists essentially of rounded hills which slope gently to the valley floors. Near the north end of the Property the terrain steepens locally, and the canyon walls are Precipitous along the courses of several streams. There is an adequate supply of water and native timber for mining purposes. The average elevation near the deposits is 5,700 feet.The climate of the region is relatively moderate. The summers are usually warm, with frequent rainstorms. Temperatures often fall below zero during the winter months. Snowfalls are moderate to heavy.Fluorite occurrences in the Bear Lodge area have been known since 1914; however, fluorite was not discovered on the Bear Lodge property until 1943, when prospectors working on a nearby manganese deposit found fluorite mineralization in the limestone. No production has been recorded from the property."

This paper introduces a model-based automatic object recognition and registration framework to assist heavy equipment operators in rapidly perceiving 3D working environment at dynamic construction sites. A video camera and a laser scanner were utilized in this study to rapidly recognize and register dynamic target objects in a 3D space by dynamically separating target object?s point cloud data from a background scene for a quick computing process. A smart scan data updating method has been developed which only updates the dynamic target object?s point cloud data while keeping the previously scanned static work environments. Extracted target areas containing 3D point clouds were orthographically projected into a series of 2D planes with a rotation center located in the target?s vertical-middle line. Prepared 2D templates were compared to these 2D planes by extracting SURF features. Point cloud bundles of the target were recognized, and followed by the prepared CAD model?s registration to the templates. The field experimental results show that the proposed rapid workspace modeling method can significantly improve heavy construction equipment operations and automated equipment control by rapidly modeling dynamic target objects in a 3D view.

"INTRODUCTIONThe area beneath the seafloor preserves valuable resources that are inevitable to sustain our industrial society. Hydrocarbon resources such as petroleum and natural gases are one of the representative examples, which have been mined over a century (Brandt et al. 1998). In addition, submarine resources such as methane hydrates, ferromanganese crusts, and metal deposits of hydrothermal origin have long been known (Rona 2003; Kvenvolden and Rogers 2005), although methods of their mining have not yet been developed. All of these resources are distributed heterogeneously, and various exploration techniques have been developed and examined. The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is conducting a project on the development of exploration methods of these unexploited resources (Urabe et al. 2015; also see http://www.jamstec.go.jp/sip/images/pamphlet_e.pdf). The present study particularly focuses on our attempt on the developing an exploration method of hydrothermal ore deposits.Seafloor hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with submarine volcanoes of mid-ocean ridges, hot spots, and island arcs, and back arcs (Hannington et al. 2010). Active hydrothermal systems discharging high-temperature fluids can be detected above the seafloor as anomalies of temperature, turbidity, and acoustic impedance (e.g. Kasaya et al. 2015). However, because of the temperature limitation of mining (Boschen et al. 2013), the target of mining may be extinct and probably buried. To explore buried hydrothermal ore deposits from the vast seafloor area, geophysical surveys that can obtain information below the seafloor must be required. Several techniques including magnetic, electrical, and gravitational methods have been developed (e.g. Jones 1999; Kowalczyk 2008). Although physical properties taken by these methods are sensitive to the presence of hydrothermal deposits, difficulties are sometimes encountered. For example, anomalies of magnetic susceptibility and electrical conductivity, which characterize the presence of ore deposits, may be found above non-hydrothermal bodies such as volcanic bodies and reservoirs of hydrothermal fluids (e.g. Honsho et al. 2016). Thus, combinations of multiple methods must be used to specify the existence of buried hydrothermal ore deposits"

A series of 15, stations beginning with Potsdam and Budapest and ending with Budapest and Potsdam were occupied inn the period August, 1908, to January, 1909. The intermediate stations were all at points which had been connected by Baron Eötvös with torsion-balance traverses. The observations were made with an invariable pendulum of the standard four-pendulum type of instrument of the Geodetic Institute, made by Stückrath at Berlin-Friedenau. The observations at each of the field stations lasted-one to three days with one exception; two or three time determinations were made; four to eight series of pendulum observations were made; the error of determination of the elevation of the instrument above mean sea level ranged from 0.30 meter to 1.10 meters, with the exception of the Arad and Baja stations, where the elevation was known more accurately and averaged about ± 0.8 m, which would cause an error of ± 0.25 x 10-3 dynes. No topographic correction was applied. The values for ?g were taken from Eötvös: Report on Geodetic Observations in Hungary, especially Observations with the Torsion Balance, Budapest, 1910. The differences in ?g as determined, by the torsion balance and by the unvariable pendulum were: Kuvin-Hidegkut 1.2 km. 0.001, Livada-Kuvin 9 km. 0.001, Pankota-Livada 13 km. 0.004, Kuvin-Arad 20 km. 0.000, Pankota-Arad via Kuvin 42 42 km.0.005, Pankota- Arad via Kurtics 50 km.0.000 dynes. Oltay concludes that if the stations are close enough together and if the terrane is rather flat, the measurement of ?g with the Eötvös torsion balance is as accurate as with the invariable pendulum. -- Donald C. The Ouachita, Ozark-St. Francis, and Mark Twain National Forests are located within the Ozark and the Ouachita Mountains regions of southern Missouri, central and northern Arkansas, and eastern Oklahoma- an area generally referred to as the Ozark-Ouachita or Interior Highlands. These national forests share many similarities in geography, biotic resources, and areas of shared public, market, and user interests. The three national forests have joined together to evaluate the natural resources within the Highlands and to study the impacts of the forests on local and regional economies and on the people who use these national forests and their resources. Other federal, state, and local government agencies and universities have joined with the Forest Service in this project, broadening the assessment area beyond the national forest boundaries to include 107 counties in Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The diverse, resource-related data for the as- sessment area address social, economic, terrestrial, and aquatic issues and conditions throughout the Highlands. The assessment report currently is being developed by the Forest Service and will include an accoMpanying CD-ROM. The Ozark-Ouachita Highlands assessment has provided a forum for minerals- and geology-related resources, industries, social significance, and potential to be profiled and discussed along with other critical assessment resources. The state geological agencies in Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma were active contributors to this effort. Their reports and other key data bases developed and used for the minerals sections of the published assessment report will be available either as a supplemental CD-ROM or on the Internet. Updated information on the progress of the assessment report can be found at the Ouachita National Forest Website, at <http://www.fs.fed.us/oonf/ouachita.htm>. This will also include a matrix displaying the minerals in the assessment area, their occurrence by assessment-area counties, and a potential ranking, as well as information on interesting geologic features. The state and federal reports, resources, and data bases, have helped answer key questions concerning mineral resources and related issues in the Highlands:

"This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Mines as part of a program of the Solid Fuels Administration to encourage the utilization of anthracite fines, the objective being to determine the practicability of using anthracite fines in the manufacture of packagedThe experimental loss of packaged fuel covered by this report were made at a commercial plant using the Glenn Smith process and ordinarily making packaged fuel from Pocahontas screenings. These lots included several made from straight antimacite mines and others made from various blends of anthracite fines with four different bituminous coals. In all cases an asphalt binder was used. Determinations of the physical properties and the cobustion characteristics o the various samples of packaged fuel were made by the. Bureau of Mines at the Central Experiment Station.The physical tests indicated that a packaged fuel of sufficient strength for ordinary handling can be made from straight anthracite coal or from a wide variety of blends of anthracite fixes with bitunimous coal, using asphaltic binder. However the combustion tests indicated that packaged fuel made from anthracite alone tended to crumble excessively during burning and that as much as 30 to 50 percent of a caking coal may be required In the mixture to produce a block having satisfactory combustion characteristics.The authors wish to acknowledge the. splendid cooperation of Messrs. H. W. Kelly, J. L. Mooney and C. H. The reduction and nitridation of preoxidized ilmenite pellets were investigated with the prospect of creating grain refiners containing titanium oxides and titanium nitride dispersoids. All the reduction and nitridation reactions were conducted in a furnace with a thermogravimetric analysis system under a H2-N2 gas mixture of 5 L/min. The ilmenite pellets were reduced at 1100°C for 4 hours under 80%H2-20%N2 gas mixture, and then respectively nitrided at 700°C, 800°C, 900°C and 1000°C for 12 hours under 10%H2-90%N2 gas mixture. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and analyzed by Energy Dispersive Spectrometers (EDS) and Electron Probe Mapping Analysis (EPMA). Iron oxides were reduced into metallic iron, and oxides of titanium were found, but titanium nitride particles were not identified in the products under the prevailing conditions.

Cyanidation tailings which are disposed in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural degradation, frequently reducing the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of pond geometry, local weather conditions and feed solution chemistry has been largely empirical though in many cases mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or an effluent limitation. To permit a more quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, WAD and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared against data collected for a North American tailings impoundment during 1998.

This paper presents the results of a study of case histories of projects on which sinking caissons were used to construct shafts for tunnel construction and other underground works. Design methodologies are reviewed with respect to the impact of soil and groundwater conditions on the performance and constructability of sinking caissons. Factors which have led to success or failure are reviewed and evaluated, and recommendations for future investigation, design and construction activities are presented. Cost data for five recent projects are reviewed and compared to the cost of shaft installation by other means.

The effect of mineralogy on the grindability was investigated using three copper ores – two sulphides and one oxide. The dominant copper minerals were identified by optical microscopy and mineral chemistry derived from SEM-EDS analysis. The sample designated sulphide 1 was borniterich, sulphide 2 ore was mainly chalcopyrite, and the oxide ore was predominantly malachite and minor azurite. The gangue minerals were identified using semi-qualitative XRD analysis. Sulphide 1 contained more than 80% (w/w) of quartz compared to about 70% in the other two ores. The Bond work indices were 13.8, 21.6, and 17.3 kWh/t for sulphide 1, sulphide 2, and oxide ore respectively. This suggested that the chalcopyrite-rich ore is the hardest, while the malachite-rich ore has intermediate hardness, and the bornite-rich ore is the softest. The brittleness indices of the ores were calculated using the chemical composition of the gangue, and a good correlation between brittleness indices and Bond work indices was observed, which highlights the importance of the gangue composition in determining the fracture behaviour of the ores. There is scope for further investigation into the relationship between ore mineralogy and comminution behaviour using other breakage characterization techniques.

"The BHP Diamonds Inc. and Blackwater Group (Dia Met Minerals Ltd., Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson) joint venture began production at Canada=s first diamond mine during the last quarter of 1998.Construction of the processing plant began in mid 1997. During the 1998 winter season, the heavy process plant equipment was delivered to the Ekati site, 300 km NE of Yellowknife, by the ice road. Towards mid 1998 the construction activities were complete and commissioning began. The mine officially opened in October 1998.Initial production of 9000 tpd kimberlite will be from the Panda pipe grading 1.09 ct/t at an average value of US$13O/ct.Processing starts with a gyratory crusher reducing the ROM kimberlite to 90% passing 15Omm before further reduction to minus 75mm in a WaterFlush crusher. The crusher product discharges into a 4m diameter x 7m long primary scrubber. After screening, the minus 75 +1 mm kimberlite is conveyed to a 250 ft feed bin ahead of the 1.7 m diameter x 1.1 m wide high pressure grinding roll. The HPGR produces 50% minus lmm in a single pass, the compacted flake product is dis-agglomerated in a secondary scrubber. The scrubber product is screened into a minus 25 +lmm heavy medium separation plant feed and conveyed to a 375t HMS feed bin ahead of two 150 HMS modules. Milled 270D ferrosilicon at a slurry density of 2.6 g/cc and HMS feed are pumped to three 420mm diameter cyclones. Heavy mineral concentrates, approximately 1 % of the plant headfeed, are pneumatically transported to the Recovery plant for final diamond recovery using wet high intensity magnetic separators and high intensity (attrition) milling prior to three stages of x-ray recovery. At full production, Ekati will produce approximately 2 kg/day of diamonds.This paper details the later commissioning phase and the first three months Oof operational activities during the build up to full production at the Ekati processing plant."

"The Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) has been operating successfully for 14 years, and has an ancestry dating back over 30 years. Together with complementary developments in stock exchange listing rules, the Code has brought about substantially improved standards of public reporting by Australasian mining and exploration companies. The Code is regarded as a world leader in its field, and has been used as a basis for the development of resource/reserve reporting standards in other countries. The reasons for its success are varied, foremost among them being its adoption in full by the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges, and the ability and willingness of mining industry organizations to bring Competent Persons to account when necessary.The latest revision of the JORC Code was undertaken in 2002-2003, based in part on releases of upgraded reporting standards in Canada, the United Kingdom/Western Europe, and South Africa, and the 2003 edition is expected to be released mid-year. Two of the more significant changes are: the introduction of a requirement for a Competent Person to be responsible for the documentation upon which Exploration Results are reported; and inclusion in the definition of a Competent Person of a reference to “Recognized Overseas Professional Organizations” being overseas professional organizations to which Competent Persons may belong for the purpose of preparing documentation for the submission of reports to the Australian Stock Exchange."

Eagle Plains Resources? Exploration in the Northern Cordillera ?Eagle Plains Resources Ltd. (EPL) is actively exploring for Zn-Pb deposits in the northern Cordillera in both carbonate-hosted and shale-hosted (sedex) environments. ?This presentation will review some of the significant carbonate-hosted Zn-Pb showings occurring in the Mackenzie Mountains, NWT and make limited comparisons with sedexdeposits in the adjacent Selwyn Basin.

With the aim of solving the large deformation problem of surrounding rock in coal mine roadways with a thin sand-mudstone interbed roof, transportation roadway 1603 in Haoyuan Mine was considered. The failure mechanism of surrounding rock was studied through comprehensive on-site investigations, borehole image analysis, mineral composition analysis, and other means. Numerical simulations were performed to determine the influence of roof layer thickness, lateral pressure coefficient, and coal rib strength on the stability of the interbedded roof. The main reasons for support failure and deformation of the roadway are softening and swelling of the sand-mudstone interbed roof upon exposure to water, insufficient support capacity of the roof due to the soft coal rib, an unreasonable support scheme, or poor construction quality, which can reduce the bearing capacity of surrounding rock. Based on our analysis, a control strategy was devised for a thin coal-mudstone interbed roof. The support scheme combines long and short cable support, strengthening of the coal rib to consolidate the roof, and partially shotcrete grout, and was found to improve the overall mechanical strength of surrounding rock and maintain the stability of the thin sand-mudstone interbed roof. The results of the numerical simulations and monitoring data indicated that the proposed support scheme effectively controls the deformation of the surrounding rock of thin sand-mudstone interbed roof of coal mine roadways while maintaining the safety and stability of the surrounding rock and supporting structure.
