At present the feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products including toxic waste, oil, nuclear waste and low pressure gas is under investigation in e number of countries. A possible method of storage is in large excavations, Preliminary ventilation design work has identified that the climatic conditions encountered within these large excavations are a limiting ventilation pollutant within the ventilation system. This paper examines the design of a variety of sizes of excavation from a ventilation viewpoint. The main phases of an excavations lifetime can be divided into four main phases, these being construction, civil and mechanical fitting, storage, full and sealed. The paper details ventilation design options for the first two phases of e vaults lifetime, giving climatic simulations to assess the likely climatic conditions within the excavations for e number of facility depths. The options for climatic control are given and analyzed by means of climatic simulations techniques. l. INTRODUCTION The feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products is under investigation at present in a number of countries. This paper details a possible design for such a facility where the product is to be stored in large underground excavations. A facility layout has been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent construction and storage operations. Thus from a ventilation perspective the facility consists of two circuits , a construction ventilation circuit and a product ventilation circuit both of which are served by an intake and a return surface connection The construction and storage circuits are considered as independent of each other , any interaction in the form of leakage must be from the construction to the storage circuit. From the facility design a ventilation network was developed to assess the ventilation requirements of the facility. In analyzing the pollutant loads for the construction circuit two pollutants were recognised to be critical to the ventilation design , these being diesel exhaust fumes and heat end humidity. In this paper ventilation design options for the construction and civil and mechanical fitting phases of the excavations are analyzed by means of climatic simulation and options for climatic control within the vaults are outlined . 2. FACILITY DESIGN A schematic diagram of a facility design is illustrated in Figure 1. There would be two distinct ventilation circuits , one to service the construction operations and the second to serve the storage operations which occur concurrently with construction , the circuits are separated by ventilation bulkheads . Access to the facility for intake air is provided by two drifts, one to serve each circuit. Two shafts act as returns to surface. The facility consists of two distinct zones for the storage of two types of product. One type is to be stored in smell linear excavations. The second zone is for the storage of a second product in larger excavations. The maximum cross-sectional area and perimeter for the smell linear excavations are 456.25 m2 and 83.2 m, while for the larger excavations they are 440.1 m2 and 86.4 m. Excavation construction consists of three phases: 1. Initial pilot tunnel development between main intake and return to provide through flow ventilation. 2. Enlargement to produce the required finished cross-section. 3. Civil and mechanical engineering work to fit out the excavation ready for storage. It is proposed to excavate the excavations using drill and blest methods utilising diesel equipment. Spoil is to be transported to surface by a conveyor belt system. At any one time the maximum number of working places requiring ventilation will consist of ; 3 storage sites, 2 excavations under construction, 2 excavations undergoing civil and mechanical fitting. High temperature, methane, dust and other disasters are getting more serious with mining depth getting deeper and the development of mechanization in underground mines. An application of a descensional ventilation to a coalface is one of the effective measures to solve the above problemes. The descensional ventilation is an venttilation that an airflow in a coalface wouuld downflow along an inclination of a coalface and the direction of the airflow is the same as coalflow. Since 1960's, the descensional ventilation has been applied to 171 coalfaces in 46 coal mines of 23 coal mine administrations in China, such as Pingdingshan , Zhongliangshan, Pubai, Huangshi coal mine administrations. Among the 171 coalfaces, there were 104 coalfaces taking 60.8% in gently inclined seam. The coalfaces in inclined seam and steep seam were individually taking 18.7 % and 20.5 %. There were 77 coalfaces taking 45 % of the total in low gassy coal mines and coal and methane outburst mine were individually taking 17% and 38%. There were 141 coalfaces taking 82.5% of the total in potential danger of dust explosion. There were 125 coalfaces taking 73.1% of the total in potential danger of spontaneous combustion. Therefore, the descensional ventilation can be used in coalfaces under different conditions in China. The practice at home and abroad shown that the application of the descensional ventilation to coalfaces has obvious results in dust control, temperature control, preventing methane accumulation at top corner angle and control of spontaneous combustion in goaf. To more safely and reliably apply the descensional ventilation to coalface and to provide a way for the development of mine ventilation technology in China, the paper will have discussions on the following problems: METHANE EMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION AT COALFACE WITH DESCENSIONAL VENTILATION Methane emission in a coalface with a descensional ventilation is an argued issue for many years. Base on the coal practice, special similar model tests and researches in China, the followings are our main comments. The Descensional Ventilation can Reduce the Methane, Accumulation at the Top Corner Angle. The measurements in six coalfaces with the downward airflow in Qinhemen Mine, Fuxin Coal Mine Administrations shown that the methane concentration at the top corner angle is often up to l% when the coalface has the upward, airflow. The max. methane concentration at the top corner angle is about 0.49 to 0.7% when the coalface has the descensional ventilation. Therefore, with the descensional ventilation, it basically solved the overlimited gas concentration at the top corner angle which is a potential danger to coal production. Because the direction of upfloating gas is opposite to the direction, of the descensional airflow, the descensional ventilation; could increase a turbulent flow mixing capacity of the methan gas and air, and reduce a possibility of methane; accumulation. Due to an air leakage in goat when the coalface with the descensional ventilation lower than an air leakage in goat when the coalface with the, ascensional ventilation, a less methane quantity will release from goat at the descensional ventialtion. It should be pointed out that due to a higher air leakage at ascensional ventilation and the direction of the air; leakage same to the direction of the natural upfloating methane in goaf, those will cause a large methane; accumulation at the top of the goaf and easy bring about, methane accumulation and overlimited methane concentration at the top corner angle with an ventilation vortexflow at the top corner angle. On the other hand, because the direction of the upfloation force function is upward, the descentional ventilation could minimize as possibility of methane accumulation at top corner angle in coal with the descensional ventiltion.

Introduction Operation is underway at the Dutch Creek No. 1 mine of the first US longwall panel to be mined under the cooperative agreement between the US Bu¬reau of Mines and Mid-Continent Resources. The 244-m (800-ft) wide longwall face is part of a multilift longwall demonstration. A 3-m (10-ft) top slice is being extracted from the 8.5-m (28-ft) coal seam. This occurs in an area of the property where the Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B beds have come together to form one seam. This face, longest ever operated in the US, is being worked on an advancing longwall system. During the first months of its operation, this longwall face has been very productive and safe. Mid-Continent Resources operates two coal mines in the Coal Basin, located in the White River National Forest near Carbondale, CO. The Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. originally opened this property in 1895, and conducted a small mining operation for 10 years on the north rim of the basin and then abruptly shut down. Mid-Continent began operations in 1956, after the Coal Basin fields had lain idle for about 60 years. Operations commenced at the outcrop of the Coal Basin B bed situated at the 3-km (10,000-ft) elevation. At this time, coal was produced from Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B seams in the area. Since 1981, operations have been centralized at two mines, the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the Dutch Creek No. 2, both located in the center of the basin. Since 1981, Mid-Continent has shifted its emphasis to longwall mining as the primary method of production, and each of these mines is equipped with state-of-the-art longwalls using shields as the method of roof support. A 4-km (13,000-ft) long twin-bore rock tunnel is being driven at a lower elevation of 2.4 km (8,000 ft) to intersect the coal seams at depth, as they dip 12° in a westerly direction. This tunnel will enable the company to reduce costs by replacing trucks with conveyor belt haulage (Fig. 1). Mid-Continent began longwall operations in May 1976 with the US's first modern, mechanized advancing longwall face, using chocks. In August 1978, a second advancing longwall face was started. Results from two faces showed that the mining system could be used effectively to manage the difficult conditions encountered in both the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the L. S. Wood No. 3 mines. Unfortunately, low productivity and high costs plagued the company's advancing faces. The problems resulted principally from major equipment failures, poorly designed chocks and face conveyors, and the lack of an efficient, cost effective system for building packwalls. Flushing of rock between chocks and roof control were also major problems. In Sept. 1979, Mid-Continent and the US Bureau of Mines entered into a cooperative agreement to demonstrate the feasibility of mining thick coal seams using the multilift longwall mining method. Two lifts are to be used to mine the 8.5-m (28-ft) thick coal seam in Dutch Creek No. 1 mine. The Bureau provided mining equipment for 180 m (600 ft) of longwall face. This included the shields, face conveyor and drive units, shearing machines, panel belt, and stageloader. As a result of previous experience in advancing longwall mining, Mid-Continent purchased an additional 60 m (200 ft) of face, including roof supports and an additional face conveyor. The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. "The flotation behaviors of diaspore and three kinds of silicate minerals - kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite - using an organosilicon cationic surfactant as collector were investigated as functions of reagent concentration and pulp pH. The results show that the organosilicon cationic collector QAS122 is a suitable collector for the flotation of aluminosilicate minerals but has weak collecting ability with regard to diaspore, enabling the flotation separation of diaspore from silicate minerals using QAS122 as collector. The flotation of a bauxite ore was then studied in detail. Finally, a reverse flotation separation process was used to process a low-grade bauxite ore. It was concluded that use of the organosilicon cationic collector is effective. A concentrate with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, of 9.67 was obtained from natural bauxite ore with A/S of 6.07 at pH of around 11. The Al2O3 recovery rate was 81.72 percent. IntroductionChina has abundant bauxite ore resources, but more than 98 percent of the bauxite ores are the diasporic type, with the characteristics of complex mineral composition, low aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, and difficulty of processing. The gangue minerals in bauxite ores are mainly kaolinite, pyrophyllite and illite, containing titanium and iron impurities (Zong et al., 2008). It is known that high-grade bauxite ore, with A/S greater than 8, can be processed directly by the Bayer process (Papanastassiou et al., 2002; Ma et al., 1996). However, Chinese diasporic ores have been processed mainly by the sintering process, which is environmentally damaging and energy intensive. Increasing the A/S of the diasporic ores using a flotation method is needed (Xia et al., 2010).Froth flotation is one of the most widely used processes to concentrate valuable minerals in beneficiation ores. It is particularly useful for separating finely ground ores from their associated gangue minerals. For diasporic bauxite ores, flotation is applied to obtain high-quality material for the Bayer process by increasing the A/S. Direct flotation has been shown to be an efficient method for the desilicating of diasporic bauxite ore (Wang et al., 2004; Xu et al., 2004), but reverse flotation has more advantages for this purpose, including less collector consumption, less foaming product and less effect on metallurgy (Liu et al., 2007; Hu et al., 2003; Hu, 2003; Luo et al., 2001)."

Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended $24 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale, some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than 1. m (3 ft) in width to pipes with a surface area of 128 ha (316 acres). The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments. Diamond content ranges from trace to economic concentrations. The exploration discoveries were facilitated by early recognition that the petrography, mineralogy and chemistry of the diatremes varied from the classical kimberlites of Kimberley, South Africa, to unusual more highly fractionated, alkaline, silicic varieties having affinities with leucitelamproite. Indirect methods of exploration were used, primary reconnaissance work being stream gravel sampling for kimberlitic indicator minerals. Evaluation showed Ellendale diamonds are 90% gem and near gem, but the low grades and tonnage render the deposits unpayable at today's diamond prices. After discovery in late 1979 and completion of a feasibility study by the end of 1982, evaluation studies proved Argyle to be economic. Alluvial diamond mining commenced in 1983 producing 6.2 million carats (Mct) that year, 60% being of industrial quality. Open-pit mining of the AK1 lamproite should start in 1985/1986 at a rate of 3 million t/a (33 million stpy) and produce 25 Mct/a, making this mine, and Australia, the world's largest producer of diamonds by weight. The revenue from diamond deposits is a function of the grade and the value of the diamonds. The grade is the product of the frequency of occurrence of the diamonds (stone density) and the mean stone size; the value of the stones is strongly related to their size distribution. During evaluation of the West Australian deposits, the diamond distribution was found to vary markedly in stone density and stone size. These variations corresponded with changes in the rock type hosting the mineralization. As a consequence, geological mapping of individual lamproites within the multiple vents and careful monitoring of the diamond distribution became an important part of the evaluation work. Similar variations in stone size and frequency were found to accord with separate alluvial terraces and fan gravels derived by erosion from the Argyle AM lamproite.

"Horsehead Metal Products is a zinc refinery in Mooresboro NC treating crude Waelz Oxide (WOX) to produce Special High Grade Zinc by a hydrometallurgical process, comprising leaching, zinc solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW), melting and casting and bleed treatment. Cadmium removal by zinc dust cementation plays an essential role in the bleed treatment circuit to prevent a build-up of cadmium in the circuit. Silica, although not present at significant levels in the WOX feed material (approximately 0.3%), had a significant impact on the efficiency of cadmium cementation with zinc dust, most likely due to the passivation of zinc dust particles with silica gel. Solid/liquid separation efficiency by filter press was also impacted. The silica levels were mapped throughout the circuit in an attempt to identify the source of the silica issues. Adjustments including using PLS as feed to cementation, pH control in WOX leaching and neutralization have been introduced to mitigate the issues created by silica gel in the circuit. INTRODUCTION Located in North Carolina, Horsehead Metal Products Inc. is a hydrometallurgical zinc refinery processing Waelz Oxide (WOX) to produce Special High Grade (SHG) zinc. The flowsheet, known as the Modified Zincex® process, consists of leaching, solvent extraction, electrowinning, melting and casting and bleed treatment as illustrated in Figure 1. Cadmium cementation, part of the bleed treatment process, provides an essential bleed of cadmium from the circuit, as metallic cement. The Cadmium cementation circuit consists of agitated cementation reactors, a zinc dust addition system, filter presses, agitated purification (releach) reactors and a cadmium concentrate filter press Silica can be found in several forms in acid leaching. The first form is fine silicate particles. The size of the particles can vary from one to twenty microns (1). Fine silicate particles can lead to the formation of crud in solvent extraction circuits (2, 3). At Mooresboro, crud has been observed in Depletion, which is part of the solvent extraction circuit. Silica content in the solution in this section is high. The second form of silica is monosilicic acid Si(OH)4, which begins to polymerize almost immediately upon being leached into solution. Monosilicic acid polymerizes to silica gel or a silica precipitate dependent primarily on supersaturation (5). Factors that influence the rate of polymerization include temperature, sulfuric acid concentration / pH, hydrofluoric acid concentration, seeding, and dissolved salts concentration such as zinc and aluminum in the solution (4, 5, 6). In sulfate systems, silica solubility is reported in the range of 150 to 450 ppm of SiO2 (3, 5, 7)."

INTRODUCTION The driving of drifts is a very important aspect of underground mining. It is not unusual for the percent¬age of rock broken during development in a mine using sublevel caving, for example, to be as much as 25% of the total. If one also considers the amount broken for transport, ventilation, and exploration drifts, one can easily understand that the planning and excavation of drifts play a major part in the total economics of the mine (Fig. 1). Increasing mechanization in mining demands larger tunnel areas for transport and mining equipment. With modern machines the hard work involved in using hand¬held pushers is gone, and a better environment is achieved. More rational methods could be used, but much of the experience the working man acquired by working close to the rock face (such as utilizing the natural weak planes in the rock when he placed the drill¬ing holes) has unfortunately been lost. By having sepa¬rate shifts for drilling, loading, and hauling, more atten¬tion has to be placed upon a well-designed drilling pattern. Some reduction in the number of holes required can be achieved with mechanized drilling because of the larger holes that can be produced. On the other hand, it is probably not possible to achieve the same precision as with pneumatic pushers, and it is difficult to utilize the larger holes because these cause more damage to the re¬maining rock. Recently, however, the precision has be¬come very good with the parallel booms and automatic devices for setting the lookout angle (Fig. 2). A larger arch of the drift roof requires a more carefully executed blasting procedure than before in order to prevent rock fall and to insure a sufficiently long stand-up time. In this chapter, empirical relationships that can be used to design an economic and optimal drift blasting design will be presented. The principles of the calcula¬tion method are based upon the earlier work of Langefors and Kihlström (1963) and Gustafsson (1973). COMPARISON OF EXPLOSIVES To provide for the use of various explosives it is necessary to have a basis of comparison. Several meth¬ods have been developed to characterize the strength of an explosive. Some examples are comparison of values given by (1) calculated explosion energies; (2) the ballistic mortar test; (3) the Trauzl lead block test; (4) the brisance test; (5) the weight strength concept; and (6) the underwater test. Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35°C (95°F) [1]. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by >5.6°C (10°F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures. In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35°C (95°F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy. INTRODUCTION The apparent temperature inside an occupied RA could be significantly affected by the surrounding environment’s thermal conditions, such as mine air temperature and mine strata temperature. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and air velocity. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures. Depending on factors such as geographic location and season, mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata, temperatures can vary significantly [2]. RAs located in cold mines may pass the 96-hour 35°C (95°F) AT limit test that poses a challenge for RAs located in hot mines. One solution in these cases is that the occupancy of the RA could be derated (i.e., the RA occupancy could be reduced) to ensure the AT limit is not reached. However, this would require mines to purchase additional RAs to accommodate all personnel in the mine. For mines with high temperatures (above 26.7°C or 80°F), the occupancy might have to be reduced so much that the necessary number of additional RAs would be impractical. In these cases, RA cooling systems could provide a solution.

A public awareness of and commitment to abate pollution of water, air, and soil continues to stimulate demand for industrial minerals and rocks capable of neutralizing strong and weak acids. The role of acid neutralizing agents is 1) to treat acidified water and soil until the desired pH is attained and 2) to remove acid-forming compounds from industrial processes to mitigate the formation of acidic discharges. Environmental applications for these agents include: acid rain mitigation, neutralization and prevention of acidic industrial process discharges, and treatment of acid mine drainage and coal refuse. Desulfurization of industrial flue gases involves removal of sulfate compounds capable of combining with hydrogen to form acids. Details of flue gas desulfurization are covered in the previous chapter on Flue Gas Desulfurization. Ideally, the neutralization of acids results in an upward adjustment of effluent pH 7, or neutrality. The final pH value for many acid treated wastes, especially industrial discharge streams, is commonly over neutralized to pH 8.5 to 9.5. The Clean Water Act sets the upper discharge limit at pH 9. ACID NEUTRALIZATION REAGENTS Acid neutralization is accomplished by adding alkali metal and alkaline earth metal compounds to acidic water or soil until the desired pH is attained. The commonly used alkali ions are calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and potassium (K). Sodium hydroxide, high calcium and dolomitic hydrate, high calcium and dolomitic lime (quicklime), high calcium and dolomitic limestone, soda ash, and magnesium oxide are the compounds most commonly applied to raise the pH of acidic waters or soils. Limestone and dolomitic limestone, which are calcium and magnesium carbonates, and their equivalent oxides and hydrates formed by calcination, are the industrial materials most commonly used in the manufacture of reagents for acid neutralization. Approximately 327 kt of high calcium and dolomitic lime were consumed for acid neutralization purposes in 1988. Magnesite and brucite are industrial minerals that compete with dolomitic limestone for the magnesium-oxide market. Production of caustic calcined magnesia for neutralization purposes exceeded 6 kt in 1990. Soda ash is an industrial mineral gaining increased acceptance in the neutralization of acid waste discharges. Approximately 182 kt of soda ash were consumed in 1990 for acid waste treatment or acid prevention by flue gas desulfurization. Other mineral products either consumed in minor quantities or receiving attention as future neutralizing agents include zeolite and hectorite. In some cases, waste products have been found to be suitable and cost effective for neutralization of acids. Common wastes gaining acceptance include basic slag, phosphate mining refuse, cement kiln dust, fly ash, and mine tailings.

Finnish mining traditions date back 400 years. The country was then one of Europe's major iron producers. Most of the mines in current operation, however, were started during the last 20 to 30 years. The Finnish mining industry must make do with limited resources. Deposits are usually low grade and small in size. Open-pit methods are used where possible. But thin ore bodies and harsh winters can impose severe restrictions. Underground mining is often the only option. Despite these handicaps, Finnish metal miners produce copper, nickel, zinc, vanadium, iron ore, cobalt, and ferrochrome. Ironically, the success of Finnish mining is rooted in a crisis the industry faced several decades ago. Mining costs were rising. High grade mineral deposits were nearly exhausted. It was vital that Finland develop new mining machinery and methods that afforded higher productivity. Cooperation between the Finnish mining industry and its equipment manufacturers was good. Partly as a result, the Finnish mining industry has turned itself into one of the most modern and efficient in the world. The Finns did this while continuing to meet the stringent safety and environmental requirements in force in the Nordic countries. Today, the share of domestic raw materials used by the Finnish metallurgical industry is decreasing. So the country increasingly depends on imports of ores and concentrates. To better provide these imports, Finnish mining companies have expanded their foreign operations. And, while importing raw materials, the mining industry has been exporting its technological and equipment know-how and expertise. Mining methods Conventional mining methods and machinery are used in surface mines. Drilling is the exception. It is done with Tamrock hydraulic track drills and 100 to 150 mm-diam (4 to 6-in.-diam) drill holes. Pumpable slurry explosives are used in larger open pits. Underground, sublevel stoping with open stopes is the most common mining method. It accounts for about 80% of all underground stoping. The main benefits of this method are low production costs, high mechanization, and easy control. The best productivity figures exceed 10 t (11 st) per man-hour, including all mining personnel. The development of cable bolting has made it possible to use sublevel open stoping even in relatively weak rock. Cut-and-fill methods, such as concrete-pillar stoping, inclined-wall stoping, and traditional cut-and-fill have also been used, combined with sublevel caving and room-and-pillar methods, according to local demands. Various fill materials and stabilization components have been investigated and tested for cut-and-fill methods. Sublevel open stopes are often later filled, to stabilize the surface or to allow pillar recovery.

"This paper presents an overview and performance evaluation for a reconditioned decades aged open type hard rock TBM utilized for the twin running tunnel excavations of the Second Avenue Subway Project in Manhattan, New York. The TBM tunnel lengths are approximately 2,370 m (7,800 ft, east TBM Tunnel) and 2,190 m (7,200 ft, west TBM Tunnel) with a 6.7 m (22 ft) bored diameter. This “senior” TBM mined through metamorphic rocks consisting of schist, granofels, and pegmatite, and encountered various adverse geological structures, including some relatively heavy groundwater inflows. The ground support was generally pattern friction rock bolts, and steel sets were used in poor ground. This paper presents TBM characteristics and the subsequent performance, such as machine utilization, downtime, cutter consumption rate, net penetration rate, and daily advance rate. Machine operating parameters including thrust, torque, gripping force, and cutterhead RPM, are compared with various accompanying ground conditions. The performance changes between the adjacent tunnel sections are also presented. INTRODUCTION Project Overview The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction (MTACC)’s Second Avenue Subway (SAS) Program consists of four (4) phases from 125th Street to Manhattan Battery Park along the 2nd Avenue (see Figure 1) in Manhattan New York. As a part of Phase 1, Contract 1 was awarded to S3 JV (Skanska/Schiavone/Shea) to build a TBM launch box and subsequent twin TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street under 2nd Avenue. Contract 1 was one of the key contracts in Phase 1 to pre-excavate through the footprint of the follow-on underground stations (72nd St. Station, 86th St. Station, and 96th St. Station) by hard rock TBM excavation. The project team included Client MTACC, S3 Tunnel Constructors, Designer, Aecom-Arup JV, and Consultant Construction Manager, Parsons Brinckerhoff. The major elements of Contract 1 included construction of TBM Launch Box supported by secant pile and slurry walls and mining of twin TBM tunnels with a combined tunnel length of approximately 4,560 m (15,000 ft). The dimension of the TBM launch box was approximately 247 m (810 ft) long from 92nd Street to 95th Street, 21 m (70 ft) to 24 m (80ft) wide along the 2nd Avenue, and 18 m (60 ft) to 21 m (70 ft) deep from the ground surface. The launch box was later used for the follow-on 96th Street Station."

"Canopy air curtain (CAC) technology has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for use on continuous miners and subsequently roof bolting machines in underground coal mines to protect operators of these machines from overexposure to respirator coal mine dust. The next logical progression is to develop a CAC for shuttle cars to protect operators from the same overexposures. NIOSH awarded a contract to Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher to develop the shuttle car CAC. NIOSH conducted laboratory testing to determine the dust control efficiency of the shuttle car CAC. Testing was conducted on two different cab configurations: a center drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AA cab model and an end drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AB cab model. Three different ventilation velocities were tested—0.61, 2.0, 4.3 m/s (120, 400, and 850 fpm). The lowest, 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), represented the ventilation velocity encountered during loading by the continuous miner, while the 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) velocity represented ventilation velocity airflow over the shuttle car while tramming against ventilation airflow. Test results showed an average of the dust control efficiencies ranging from 74–83% for 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), 39–43% for 2.0 m/s (400 fpm), and 6–16% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm). Minor modifications to the shuttle car CAC design and placement improved the dust control efficiency to 51–55% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) with minimal impact on dust control efficiencies for lower ventilation velocities. These laboratory tests demonstrate that the newly developed shuttle car CAC has the potential to successfully protect shuttle car operators from coal mine respirable dust overexposures. INTRODUCTION The development of the canopy air curtain (CAC) dates back to the 1970s starting with the initial development of the CAC by the Donaldson Company, Inc. under contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Krisko 1975]. This CAC was originally developed for continuous miner operators when continuous mining machines had cabs. The need for a CAC on the continuous miner was eliminated when the cab was removed from the machine design. However, CAC development progressed to include CAC designs for a roof bolting machine to protect roof bolters from respirable coal mine dust [Goodman and Organiscak 2002, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. This roof bolting machine CAC research continues to the present day."

"Rare earth elements (REEs) found in coal are in the form of minerals, ion-substitution with clays and organically bound. Rare earth minerals (REMs) such as monazite exist in coal and have a grain size less than 5 microns. Froth flotation was successful in concentrating REMs existing in a thickener underflow material derived from Fire Clay seam coal which contained around 300 ppm of rare earth elements (REEs). Conditioning with fatty acid followed by processing using multiple stages of conventional flotation produced a final concentrate containing 2300 ppm REEs. Using a laboratory flotation column, a concentrate containing around 4700 ppm of total REEs was produced equating to an enrichment ratio of 10:1. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) are becoming increasingly important and have been widely used as raw materials for the production of phosphor, metal catalysts, magnets, and batteries [1, 2]. REE recovery from alternative sources such as coal and coal by-products has the potential to stabilize the economic viability of coal mining operations while providing a dependable supply of critical materials. The average REE content of the world coal is around 60-70 ppm [2]. There are many well-known coal beds with high contents of REEs such as those in the Far East coalfields in Russia (300-1000 ppm), the Fire Clay coal seam in eastern Kentucky (500 ppm), and the Sydney Basin in Nova Scotia, Canada (72-483 ppm) [3-6]. The occurrence of REEs in coal and coal by-products can be classified into three types, i.e., rare earth minerals such as monazite and xenotime, ion exchangeable REEs in clays, and REEs associated with organic matrix. The particle size of the rare earth (RE) minerals in coal and coal by-products is very small and normally in the micron and/or nanometer scales. The flotation technique, which is based on the surface chemistry difference, has been widely used to treat fine rare earth industrial minerals such as monazite, xenotime, and bastnaesite [7-11]. As such, flotation is a promising method for the concentration of REEs from coal and coal by-products. In the current study, rare earth flotation was conducted using the fine coal refuse generated at an operating coal preparation plant treating coal from the Fire Clay seam. REE concentration by flotation required an appropriate amount of grinding and control of the pH value while using typical collectors. Prior to RE concentration, release tests were conducted to evaluate the floatability of the recoverable coal and the REE distribution in the flotation fractions in the fine refuse. Mineralogy of the REE was studied using SEM-EDX."

"The Regional Connector Transit Corridor is a 1.9 mile long light rail transit project in downtown Los Angeles, California. The project includes approximately 4,930 feet of twin bored tunnels together with a mined crossover cavern, 3 deep stations, and other cut-and-cover structures. The bored tunnels will be excavated using an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine through Fernando Formation (extremely weak to weak rock) and alluvium. The tunneling will be performed in close proximity to a large number of existing structures, including the existing Metro Red Line tunnels with as little as 6 feet of separation. Thus, the evaluations of the tunneling effect on these structures and the instrumentation and monitoring program is an essential part of the project design. This paper provides a very brief overview of the considerations and evaluations of the tunneling effects on the existing structures and results of evaluation obtained during the final design stage of the project. INTRODUCTION The proposed Regional Connector Transit Corridor (RCTC) project provides a 1.9 mile-long connection between the Metro Gold Line from Pasadena and East Los Angeles; and the Metro Blue Line to Long Beach and the Expo Line to Culver City. The alignment is shown in Figure 1. The Regional Connector will provide new tracks through downtown Los Angeles. The project will extend underground from the Metro Blue, Expo, Red, and Purple Lines’ 7th Street/Metro Center Station following Flower Street, curving northeast to the north of 3rd Street under the 2nd Street Tunnel. The alignment will then continue eastward under 2nd Street, turning northeast to cross under the intersection of 1st and Alameda Streets, then splitting into two branches above the ground surface, one branch extending north along Alameda Street and the other extending east along 1st Street. The project elements include 3 deep stations, a SEM cavern, segments of TBM bored tunnels, and cut-and-cover guideway structures. The bored tunnels have an excavated diameter of 20.3 feet. The subsurface conditions along the tunnel alignment generally consist of artificial fill overlaying finer-grained alluvium (dominantly medium dense to dense sandy soils), underlain by coarser-grained alluvium (a wide variety of medium dense to dense sandy and gravely soils). Below the coarser-grained alluvium is Fernando Formation, which is characterized as extremely weak to very weak sedimentary bedrock. A long stretch of the alignment will be excavated in this formation. The soil layers above the Fernando Formation are of variable thickness and spatial distribution. The geologic profile is shown in Figure 2."

Staurolite, an iron aluminum silicate mineral, is used industrially as a high value-in-use sandblasting agent, as a premium-grade foundry sand, and as the source of aluminum in portland cement manufacture in areas where the aluminum constituent is not economically available from shale or argillaceous limestone. Staurolite is produced by E. I. duPont de Nemours and Company as a coproduct of titanium mineral production in Florida, where it was first recovered on a commercial scale in 1952 from the Pleistocene sand deposit known as Trail Ridge. At this deposit it comprises about one-fifth of the heavy mineral suite, the principal other heavy minerals being ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, kyanite, sillimanite, and tourmaline. Staurolite and other nonconductive silicate heavy minerals are separated from the conductive titanium minerals on high-tension electrostatic separators. The silicates are then separated from one another magnetically, the staurolite being relatively magnetic. In the total process, 200 t of raw sand yield 7 t of heavy mineral concentrate from which about 1 t of staurolite is recovered. The staurolite concentrates have the characteristics given in Table 1. Staurolite concentrates are sold in three grades having the size distribution of subrounded grains shown in Table 2. All three grades are used in sandblasting for cleaning metal, for paint removal, and for cleaning masonry buildings. Staurolite compares favorably with lower priced abrasives, such as boiler slags and silica sand, in applications where the abrasive is used only once and is not recovered and recycled. Because it is hard, fine, clean, and dense it can reduce blasting time, and less material is required to clean a specific area. Compared to higher priced abrasives such as aluminum oxide and garnet, which are recycled, staurolite costs significantly less per kilogram and cleans at equal or faster rates. Its breakdown factor, which is a measure of recycling performance, is intermediate between those for aluminum oxide and garnet. [ ] [Tables 3 and 4] show the blast cleaning performance of the three staurolite grades compared to other abrasives. [Table 5] compares the longevity of premium priced abrasives during recycling. [Table 6] shows a cost comparison between silica sand and staurolite. Fringe benefits claimed for staurolite's use as an abrasive are: 1. Good flow properties and freedom from the lumps or slivers found in silica sand or boiler slag abrasives. 2. Low dusting affords good visibility, permits faster working, and reduces cleanup problems. 3. Heated storage is not required during freezing conditions, because the mineral is nonhygroscopic.

The geophysical aspect of reconnaissance marks the beginning of extensive computer applications supporting development of a mine. Although there are some storage and retrieval applications in geology, and some statistical analysis in geochemistry, large-scale compilation, reduction, and interpretation of mineral resource data are initiated in reconnaissance geophysics. The reasons for this fact are quite simple. Geophysics is oriented toward quantitative evaluation of areas of interest, and methods of data collection are automated to the extent that large amounts of analog and digital information are recorded. The large volume of data must be interpreted in a reasonable time. Furthermore, some modeling problems involving complex numerical solutions could not be attempted without the computer. Therefore, the computer is essential to the success of an exploration project using geophysics. For example, aeromagnetics is a common technique for reconnaissance examination of areas associated with sulfide systems and porphyry deposits. An area covering 161 X 161 km (100 X 100 miles) may be flown with a 1.6-km (1-mile) line spacing yielding 10,000 line miles (16,093 km) of data. If only 10 measurements are recorded per mile, 100,000 data points, including location and magnetic field intensity, must be reduced and stored for quantitative interpretation. Computer applications often represent a significant investment in manpower and hardware. It is desirable, therefore, to initiate an engineering approach to the application of computers to geophysics. By this it is meant that computer programs and systems should be formulated, developed, and implemented in a disciplined manner such that their usage is dependent only on the application and not on the individual doing the programming. In other words, computer application, development, and usage should evolve beyond the personal gadget phase to an important applied technology. Geophysics has evolved over the past two decades in a course parallel to computer hardware development. During the sixties, the computer became large enough and fast enough that complex models required by geophysics could be solved. Automation also relieved the geophysicist from routine manual calculations. During the seventies, computing power in¬creased and applications expanded from two-dimensional problems to three-dimensional modeling. Moving into the eighties, as computer hardware costs will significantly decrease, the major expense of computing will be the manpower required to develop, implement, and use an application; therefore, improved programming techniques and applications software engineering methods will be used to optimize and preserve this investment. This chapter presents a general overview of computer methods in geophysical reconnaissance; it is divided into two parts: geophysical methodology and software engineering.

INTRODUCTION The Bunker Hill mine, located at Kellogg, ID, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, has been a major pro¬ducer of lead-zinc-silver ore since 1887. Since its dis¬covery, it has produced over 25 401 171 t (28 million st) of ore from 20 to 25 veins and ore zones. The mine now covers an area of approximately 1.609 km (1 mile) in length and 0.8 km (1/2 mile) in width and extends from 1097 m (3600 ft) above sea level to 488 m (1600 ft) below sea level. Production is presently at a rate of 1542 t/d (1700 stpd). During 1965, a new stoping method, the Bunker Hill pillar system, was developed to enable the profitable mining of large, low-grade zinc ore bodies. The system was specifically designed to in¬corporate the Atlas Copco T26GH rubber-tired loaders. High productivities were achieved, and the method was adapted for mining the higher grade stopes where large timber square sets are utilized. This results in nearly 100% extraction. GEOLOGY The area encompassing the Bunker Hill mine lies immediately south of the Osburn fault, a major east-west striking, deep-seated strike slip fault which is the dominant structural feature in the Coeur d'Alene district. The Bunker Hill forms a series of veins and mineralized zones which occur as link structures, tension fractures, and breccia zones in folded, interbedded argillaceous quartzites of the Revett and St. Regis formations of the Precambrian belt series. The Rosco ore body is predominantly a zinc ore body above the Cate fault, which is presently known to occur from the 13 level. [elevation 488 m (1600 ft)] to the 1600 level [elevation 304 m (1000 ft) ]. These ore bodies are stringer zones with at least one dominant 1.8 to 4.5 m (6 to 15 ft) wide band of ore. They dip 0.09 to 0.26 rad (5° to 15°) steeper than the local 0.61 rad (35°) dip of the Cate fault, and also deviate 0.26 to 0.52 rad (15° to 30°) in strike from the Cate. Because of the flat dip and fractured weak hanging wall, normal cut-and-fill mining has not proven practical in this ore body. The mechanized timber methods described in the next section and the Bunker Hill pillar system are the mining methods successfully used. MINING METHODS While pillar stoping and mechanized cut-and-fill stop¬ing methods were obviously superior to the widely used timber stoping methods, as far as cost and productivity

It is well known that surface moisture and fine content have a strong influence on coal handle- ability. It is known as well that these two criteria are not sufficient to classify coals. It seems that certain types of coals are intrinsically difficult to handle, the reason being still not well understood. For these coals, moisture and fine content are aggravating factors and have to be strictly controlled in order to avoid handling problems (sticking, arching in hoppers.. .). CERCHAR has undertaken research aimed at identifying the role of intrinsic characteristics of coal with regard to handling properties. Two of them have been identified as particularly relevant : the clay content and the "colloidal particle" content. Two simple tests commonly used for soils characterisation, but never used so far for coal, have been applied to characterise a wide range of coals. The derived classification has been compared with an empirical classification based on dry screening tests. DRY SCREENING EXPERIMENTS Dry screening at a relatively low screen aperture (e.g. 6 mm) may be considered as a good tool for assessing the handleability of wet fine coals. Difficult to handle coals always lead to rapid plugging of the screen whilst easy to handle coals can be screened without difficulties. A wide range of coals has been selected with various ash, moisture and fine content. Their characteristics are given in table 1. The experimental set-up consists of a 2 t.p.h vibrating screen equipped with two automatic re- cording balances collecting respectively oversize and undersize material. Provided that the feeding rate is accurately controlled, good reproducibility in the percentage passing as a function of time is obtained. Figure 1 gives examples of different types of relations that were obtained. - LMC coal exhibits a behaviour that is characteristic of easy to handle coals : % passing remains constant in the course of the screening operation. - B coal behaves slightly differently. One observe first a rapid decrease in the flow passing through the screen and then a stabilization. Hand- ling properties can be considered as intermediately - The curve relative to LHB coal is characteristic of a very difficult to handle coal that blinds the screen almost immediately. It is necessary to point out the fact that the classification derived from screening experiments is a global one, including not only intrinsic factors but also external factors such as fines and moisture content. The role of surface moisture is in particular very important and variations in this parameter may upset the empirical classification

Introduction The Red Dog zinc/lead deposit in northwest Alaska is the second largest zinc deposit ever discovered. Being developed by Cominco Alaska, with startup scheduled for early 1990, it will ultimately be the largest zinc mine in the Western World. Table 1 shows the reserves of the deposit. Bob Baker, a local bush pilot, discovered Red Dog in 1968. The US Geological Survey assessed the find. But the Red Dog site had been withdrawn from staking by provisions in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA). Under the terms of ANCSA, the deposit was selected by the NANA Regional Corporation, one of 13 native corporations established by the Act. Then, in 1980, the US Congress confirmed this selection, in the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. In 1982, Cominco and NANA reached an agreement that has led to the development of the mine. Under the agreement, Cominco leases the property from NANA, develops and operates the mine, and markets the concentrate produced. In return, NANA receives royalties and, after capital recovery, participates in the net proceeds from the operation. The Alaska State Government is also playing a role in the development of the mine. Under the auspices of the Alaska Industrial Development Authority (AIDA), the state will construct, own, and operate the DeLong Mountains Regional Transportation System. This consists of a 84-km (52¬mile) road from the minesite to the Chukchi Sea. Located here are the port facilities necessary to store and ship the annual concentrate production and receive the mine fuel and supplies. For using this transportation system, Cominco will pay an annual toll fee. Over the anticipated 50 year life of the operation, the fee will provide a 6.5% return to the State of Alaska. In late 1986, Cominco's Board of Directors approved the Red Dog project. And, during the summer of 1987, road construction began. In February 1988, initial stripping began at the ore body and construction started at the millsite. Project setting The project site is approximately 1000 km (600 miles) northwest of Anchorage, 84 km (52 miles) east of tidewater on the Chukchi Sea, and 192 km (120 miles) north of the Arctic Circle (Fig. 1). The countryside consists of low, rolling hills that lead into mountains north and east of the deposit. The vegetation is typical tundra mat. And the site is in an area of permafrost. However, the permafrost is relatively warm and some areas have been found to be thawed. Examples would be creek bottoms and the site of the main waste dump.
