The Eskay Creek Mine, a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia started operations in late 1994. For the first three years of operation, ore was crushed to minus 2 inch; blended to satisfy smelter terms and direct shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Before commencing the above operations, preliminary evaluations had indicated that an extremely complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. Subsequently markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations, at a nominal production rate of 300 tonnes per day, were commenced. Exploration diamond drilling in 1995 and 1996 discovered additional lower grade mineralized zones, which are less economic or uneconomic as direct shipping ore. Testwork demonstrated that these lower grade zones could be upgraded to marketable concentrates in a simple flotation mill. The mill was built in 1997 and has been in operation since late 1997. The mining rate now has increased to 400 tonnes per day including 250 tonnes per day of the direct shipping ore and ISO tonnes per day of the mill ore. Prime Resources Group Inc. wholly owns the Eskay Creek Mine. Homestake Canada Inc. owns 50.6% of Prime's shares and manages and operates the mine on Prime's behalf. This paper discusses the mining and milling operations as well as ore shipment and smelter contracts' administration.

Emissions of particulates, unburned hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides (NO[ ]) and carbon monoxide (CO) from diesel engines are of concern in mines, particularly underground mines. All these undesirable products except NOx are the result of incomplete combustion in the cylinders. Various approaches to achieving more complete combustion in diesel engines have included different fuel compositions, use of catalysts, fuel additives, engine modifications, and oxygen-enriched intake air. The present study shows that injecting minute quantities of primarily platinum group metal catalysts into the intake air of a Deutz/MWM D916-6 mine diesel engine substantially reduces emissions in the exhaust. The catalyst injection system, which was developed by National Fuelsaver Corporation (Robin. 1981), transfers catalyst compounds in solution to a stream of air bubbles by a process called Bubble Fractionation (Lemlich et al.. 1966, 1968. 1970). The amounts are so minute that concentrations in the engine exhaust should be well below OSHA/NIOSH Time Weighted Average (TWA) exposure limits at steady state, a fact that was confirmed by analysis of collected particulates in the exhaust. When the catalyst injection was used along with a pleated paper filter to remove exhaust particulates, the filter operating life was shortened greatly. Therefore, this system is not recommended for use on diesel engines equipped with a water scrubber and a filter. It does offer a practical and relatively economical way of reducing exhaust emissions from other diesel engines, such as those in outby mine service

Attempts have been made during the last three decades to establish a correlation between respirable dust dosage and the degree of progression of pneumoconiosis or silicosis amongst mine workers. Fair correlation has been possible only after the Johannesburg Pneumoconiosis Conference established mass concentration of dust in the respirable size range as the true measure of the incidence of pneumoconiosis. The author had established a good correlation between cumulative total respirable dust dosage as well as cumulative silica dosage and the category of pneumoconiosis according to ILO classification at Mufulira Copper Mine. Studies at Hutti also show a linear relationship between the average cumulative dust and silica dosage md the category of pneumoconiosis. However the maximum tolerable cumulative dust dosage for - prolonged exposure is 182 mg month/m3 - at Hutti as compared to 275 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. Similarly the maximum tolerable silica dosage for - prolonged exposure is Only 35 mg month/m3 at Hutti as compared to 55 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. The TLV for dust concentration at Hutti works out at 0.6 mg/m3 compared to 1.1 mg/m3 at Mufulira and the TLV of silica concentration at Hutti is 0.117 mg/m3 compared to 0.25 mg/m3 at Mufulira. The Hutti figure is however, closer to the TLV of 0.1 mg/m 3 recommended by ACGIH.

The study area is located in the NW of Uluborlu (Isparta). Massive limestones and alluvial deposits form the lithological units of the study area. The average thickness of the alluvium deposit consisting mainly of light brown - red colored and fine grained clastic sediments which derived from the limestone is about 10 meters. The aim of this study to investigate the uses of this alluvial sediments as tile - brick material. For this aim, disturbed and undisturbed samples have been taken from different depths in the alluvial deposits. Mineralogical compositions have been determined by XRD and major oxide contents by XRF. Laboratory experiments have been carried out to determine the technological properties of the samples. The selected major oxide contents of samples vary between A12O3 (24.6 - 24.12 wt %), CaO (0.76 - 4.27 wt %), Fe2O3 (10.21 - 10.29 wt %), MgO2 (1.25 - 1.51 wt %). CaCO3 and MgCO3 values calculated from the geochemical analyses, are between 1.55 - 1.62 and 2.62 - 3.17 respectively. The ratios of grain size of the samples are 82 % for < 0.2 mm and 5 % for > 3 mm. Geochemical analyses and technological features of the samples indicate that these fine grained sediments of alluvial deposit are suitable in terms of uses as tile - brick material. The potential reserve of this tile - brick material has been determined as 40 million tones.

A novel liquid-liquid separation for the recovery of free or liberated gold from mixtures of fine particles was evaluated. Two inexpensive and environmentally benign fluids were selected for the study, water and carbon dioxide. The separation, which is conducted at 295 K and at the vapor pressure of carbon dioxide (6.0 MPa), is based on differences in wettability between the precious metals and other minerals. Contact-angle results indicated that, in the presence of water and liquid CO2, gold is slightly hydrophobic. The addition of CO2-soluble fluoroalkyl thiols or f uoroetherthiols increased the hydrophobicity of gold exposed to water and CO2 to a greater extent than alkylthiols. Minerals, including quartz, pyrite and magnetite, were hydrophilic. During the separation, an aqueous slurry of fine mineral and gold particles was mixed with liquid carbon dioxide. Pure gold particles (-325 mesh) were found to agglomerate at the H2O-CO2 interface. The minerals tended to remain in the aqueous phase. Despite these promising preliminary results, very poor gold recoveries were obtained when applying the procedure to an Australian gravity concentrate. This was attributed to the native gold particles in the concentrate being either too large, agglomerated in slimes or coated with minerals. Although this particular application was unsuccessful, this water-CO2 biphase technique may be applicable for other separations that require the removal of very fine, hydrophobic particles from an aqueous slurry.

Historian and storyteller, Duane Smith, will be the keynote speaker at the National Mining Hall of Fame&apos;s 10th anniversary induction banquet on Saturday, Sept. 6,1997 in the Museum Convention Center at Leadville, CO.Smith is a professor of history and southwest studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. He is also an award-winning author of 28 books about the West and mining. Hall of Fame Board Chairman Richard Moolick said the induction banquet event will mark the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum&apos;s 10th anniversary in its Leadville facility, a century-old Victorian schoolhouse. Karl Elers, chairman of Battle Mountain Gold in Houston, TX, will be the master of ceremonies. He is a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum&apos;s board of directors. The six inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be enshrined by Thomas Falkie, president of Berwind Natural Resources of Philadelphia, PA. He is also chairman of the Mining Hall&apos;s board of governors. The six inductees will join 132 mining greats who were previously honored. The black-tie (optional) banquet will be highlighted this year by guests who prefer to don 1890s dress for the occasion in the old silver-mining boomtown. A cocktail reception and open house will precede the banquet, with tours of the district and special events to follow on Sun- day, Sept. 7.

Jurist, educator and historian Neil Reynolds will be the keynote speaker at the National Mining Hall of Fame&apos;s 11th annual induction banquet on Sunday, Oct. 11,1998 at the Pointe Hilton Resort in Phoenix, AZ. Reynolds is Municipal Court Judge for the City of Leadville, CO, home of the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum, and a fifth-generation resident of the community. His family staked mining claims on nearby Mount Massive in 1862. Judge Reynolds is a fulltime faculty member at Colorado Mountain College, Chairman of the Lake County Historic Preservation Advisory Board and practices law in Leadville. In announcing the speaker, Board Chairman Richard Moolick said seven inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame will join 138 mining greats previously honored in the annual ceremonies. This year&apos;s inductees will be enshrined by Thomas Falkie, president and chief executive officer of Berwind Natural Resources of Philadelphia, PA. Moolick also announced that Jeffrey Clevenger will be the master of ceremonies for the induction banquet. Clevenger is executive vice president of Cyprus Amax Minerals, Englewood, CO and president of Cyprus Climax Metals, Tempe, AZ. The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel (PTST) project is a part of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge- Tunnel (CBBT) complex. The project involves the construction of a two-lane bored tunnel under the Thimble Shoal Channel between Portal Island #1 (the southernmost island) and Portal Island #2. The new PTST will be the rst transportation tunnel constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region by a tunnel boring machine (TBM). This paper describes the design and construction of the tunnel approach structure in an open marine environment with the strategies employed to overcome the various construction challenges. The project is unique since the entire tunnel approach structure is built on a very limited area within an open marine environment without any reclamation of the existing island.

The Bullfrog and Montgomery-Shoshone deposits, near Beatty, NV, have a combined drill-indicated reserve of 15.8 Mt (17.4 million st) of ore. Average grade is 3.5 g/t (0.103 oz per st) gold and 8.2 g/t (0.24 oz per st) silver. The deposits occur in Miocene volcanic rocks that underwent large-scale movement within a detachment-faulted terrane. The principal host to gold mineralization is a strongly welded rhyolitic tuff that experienced brittle deformation during plate movement. Open space fractures and breccia were filled with quartz, calcite, and adularia accompanied by lesser pyrite, gold, and acanthite. Gold occurs as micrometer-sized particles within and adjacent to the low-angle fault and along associated listric-normal and tear faults. The Bullfrog and Montgomery-Shoshone are volcanic-hosted, detachment fault-related, epithermal quartz calcite stockwork gold deposits. Bullfrog&apos;s minable reserve is 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of ore grading 3.8 g/t (0.11 oz per st) of gold. At Montgomery-Shoshone, 2.7 Mt (3 million st) minable tons at 2.5 g/t (0.072 oz per st) are present. Preproduction stripping has begun at the Bullfrog ore body. A 7.7-kt/d (8500-stpd) carbon-in-pulp (CIP) mill is under construction. In 1990, Bond Gold expects to be producing about 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz per year) of gold.

The US coal industry has been using continuous room-and-pillar mining (CRPM) machines for more than 30 years for longwall development. This equipment has also been used for production mining in areas that are not appropriate for longwall mining. From 1977 to 1987, the portion of annual US production mined by continuous miner (CM) sections grew slightly from 65% to 70%. Over this time, mine operators and manufacturers have made some advances to attain the full production potential of this method. This is evidenced by the fact that average tons per eight hour shift for continuous miners in the US grew from 180 t (200 st) in 1977 to 431 t (475 st) in 1987. The authors (1990) reported that the increase in productivity was due to several factors: • a drop in prices; • a more mature workforce; • union stability and incentive programs; •procedural improvements; and •technological advances. The authors estimated that about one-third of the increased production came from the first three and other unaccounted for factors and one-third each for the last two. Even though improvements were considerable, continuous miner capacity is much higher than 431 t/shift (475 st per shift). For example, the machinery is capable of mining more than 9 t (10 st) per machine for the 6.5 available hours per shift or 3.5 kt (3900 st). However, this has never been attained on development. Bench-scale laboratory flotation and gravity separation tests were conducted on tailings samples to remove the sulfidic material, mainly pyrite, the source of acid generation. A combination of xanthate collectors, promoters, and frothers were used during flotation. Pyrite recoveries were in the range of 42 to 97%, depending on the tailings being treated. Sulfide sulfur contents of 12.8 to 0.37% in the feeds were reduced to 8.68 to 0.01% in the treated tails. Flotation tests were conducted to evaluate the ARD potential as a function of percent pyrite remaining in the tails. Standard ARD predictive tests were used to evaluate the success of the treatment. In some cases, removal of only 50 to 55% of the pyritic fraction was required, thereby demonstrating the conversion of the waste material from acidic to non-acidic. A laboratory vanning table was used to evaluate the amenability of sulfide-bearing tailings samples to gravity separation. The pyrite recoveries varied from 38 to 86%. The sulfide sulfur content of 12.8 to 0.37% in the feeds was reduced to 6.0 to 0.14% in the treated tails. Predictive ARD tests performed on tailings before and after the gravity removal of pyrite showed that most samples changed from "probably" acid producing to the "uncertain" range. Data reported and analyzed in this paper demonstrate source control for ARD prevention through the removal of metal sulfides from sulfide-bearing wastes using conventional flotation and gravity separation techniques.

This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calcula¬tions where the compliance limit of lbs S02/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. To create the parameters for the constraint equa¬tions to blend to an SO2 content of 1.2 lbs S02/million Btu; the excess sulfur for Coal A was defined as Sulfur excess%o = 0.5 - 0.6-13,000/10,000 = -0.28 This equation was used to create the constraint equation -0.28A + 0.44B + 1.36C<- 0.0 Another way to create the parameters for the constraint equation is given below. John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, “I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated” (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

Adequate ventilation of coal mine working faces is the single most important technique for controlling respirable dust and methane. Choosing the right technique presents some tough questions. Bureau research has shown that to control respirable dust you must contain the dust near the face, keeping rollback (turbulence) to a minimum. For methane the most effective approach has been to use a blowing brattice or tubing and to create turbulence and disperse the face methane, allowing it to pass over the machine and into the return. It is immediately apparent that the two approaches may counteract one another, thus complicating the decision as to which system may be best for a given situation. At present, Bureau research has developed two successful machine-mounted face ventilation systems to meet these different needs and allow deeper cutting. The fan-powered dust scrubber is designed to control dust primarily associated with blowing face ventilation systems. The spray fan controls methane on exhaust-ventilated sections.

Due to the ongoing restructuring of the mining industry in central Europe with a continuous decline of the number of large underground mines and collieries, and a simultaneous decline of staff numbers in the remaining mines, the established mine rescue schemes are endangered to collapse. With the end of the mine rehabilitation at Wismut Uranium in 2014, the last remaining major mine rescue teams in Saxony, providing basic mine rescue services for all other mines in the region, will disappear. This will leave a large number of small mines and other underground operations without capable mine rescue support. Since none of these companies is able to set up a complete mines rescue unit on its own, new ways have to be found. Among others, a central mine rescue team for central Germany as well as the assistance by special trained professional fire fighters or mine rescue teams from abroad are discussed. Problems like location of the central rescue team, financing, communication and transport have to be solved. This paper provides an overview over the complexity of the problem as an example for other mining regions worldwide and will discuss national and cross-national strategies.

Utilizing a philosophy of selecting the biggest proven equipment available Ernest Henry at full production ¥ill treat 9 Mtpa through a single grinding line over a 15 year mine life. 350.000 tonnes of concentrate a year will be produced, containing 95,000 tonnes of copper and 120,000 ounces of gold. The two mills recently commissioned at the Ernest Henry Copper/Gold Mine are a 10.4m x 5.1m (34 ft x 16.75 ft) SAG Mill and a 6.1m x 8.4m (20 ft x 27.5 ft) ball mill. The mills have a power draw of 11 MW (14745 hp) and 5.5 MW (7373 hp) respectively. While the SAG Mill is not the largest SAG Mill in the world, it is the largest shell-supported SAG Mill in the world. The Ernest Henry mills epitomize the new standard design of large grinding mills. The design was introduced more than 20 years ago and has been further developed from extensive experience with grinding mills, and the need to produce a design, which overcomes the recognized problems of large mills. The result is a design with the potential to be used for mills up to the largest for which machine tools can be found to fabricate and machine them, currently approximately 15m (48&apos;) overall diameter.

The disposable diesel exhaust filter (DDEF) system developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Industry cooperators for heavy-duty permissible, diesel-powered haulage vehicles, effectively reduces in-mine diesel particulate matter concentrations up to 95%. However, there are concerns about the hazards that exist when the filter is used in situations for which it was not designed. This work investigates the exhaust gas temperature limits to which the filter elements can be exposed without posing a safety or health hazard, such as 6re or off-gassing toxic compounds. A filter approved by the Mine Safety and Health administration and after-market filters were evaluated under varying engine exhaust conditions to determine if after-market filters pose an unacceptable hazard when used in a DDEF system. Filters were laboratory tested at engine exhaust temperatures ranging from 77°C to 290°C. Of the seven filter types tested, six appeared suitable for use on water scrubber-based cooling systems and two appeared suitable for use on dry heat exchanger type exhaust cooling systems with exhaust temperatures up to 150°C. Any filter elements used as exhaust filters on permissible diesel machines must be approved by MSHA for that application. Mine operators who wish to use an after-market filter element should request an MSHA field modification. MSHA will work with the mine and filter manufacturer to ensure its use in this exhaust system application does not pose a health or safety hazard.

In 2007, Rosebud Mining Company (RMC) opted to extend the reserve base of Tracy Lynne Mine by developing through a sandstone channel. The extension provided access to approximately 6 million additional recoverable tons (approximately 8 years of mining) which originally had been deemed inaccessible. An evaluation of the mine?s existing ventilation system, which was designed to meet the needs of the original limited reserve, concluded that two ventilation shafts would likely be required to adequately ventilate the projected workings in the expanded reserve. To assist in the evaluation, a ventilation model of the mine was developed using Ohio Automation?s ?ICAMPS MineVent? software based on field data from Tracy Lynne Mine, prior ventilation survey experience at similar RMC mines, and relevant published sources. Model results suggested that the most economical shafts would be an 8-ft diameter return and a 4-ft diameter intake. Unfortunately, issues related to property leasing and shaft site permitting caused construction delays. Therefore, the model was also used and proved to be effective in prioritizing interim ventilation upgrades which could be implemented in order to maintain coal production. Model results indicated that the best interim upgrades included rehabilitating restricted entries and damaged stoppings and replacing the main fan with a higher pressure fan. From late 2010 to mid-2012, all interim upgrades and shafts were implemented. Current models and mine experience indicate that ventilation will not be the limiting factor for mining the additional reserve.

Analyses of trace elements in bulk ores and in chalcopyrite and other ore minerals from porphyry copper systems worldwide, including skarns and breccia pipes, reveal some key factors regarding byproduct critical elements. Petrographic and scanning electron microscope analyses combined with a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique developed by the USGS on selected ores from the Mackay-Stanford Ore Deposits Collection suggest that selenium occurs as atomic substitutions in sulfides, particularly pyrrhotite (up to 430 ppm) and chalcopyrite (up to 300 ppm Se); tellurium occurs predominantly as less-than-five-micron-sized inclusions of bismuth-tellurium minerals in other ore minerals, particularly chalcopyrite; cobalt and nickel are locally enriched in pyrite (up to 7800 ppm Co and 9100 ppm Ni); gallium is locally enriched in magnetite (up to 83 ppm Ga); indium and silver are locally enriched in chalcopyrite (up to 890 ppm In and 770 ppm Ag); cadmium substitutes for zinc, particularly in sphalerite (up to 4100 ppm Cd). There is considerable variation, both between and within individual deposits, in both selenium and tellurium content in these copper ores, ranging from 0.6 to 148 ppm Se and 0.09 to 64 ppm Te. Indium tends to be high in copper ores that are also enriched in silver. At current prices, many of these elements are sufficiently enriched to warrant investigation into metallurgical recovery as byproducts of the major elements.
