Safety of mine ramps begins with an analysis of stress that almost certainly must be done numerically to take into account ramp geometry, route geology, rock properties, and pre-ramp stresses. The popular finite element method serves analysis purposes quite well. As a practical matter several obstacles to implementation need to be addressed including collection of rock and joint properties along the proposed ramp route, selection of ramp type, and specification of cross-section shape, size, and route grade. Additionally, stresses along the proposed route must be specified, preferably from in situ measurements. One need not be an expert in numerical methods to proceed to ramp design, although a background in mechanics of materials and rock mechanics is essential, and a first course in numerical methods is quite helpful. The necessary software is easily brought to the design task, more accurately, to the task of design evaluation. This software also addresses other important mine design problems including design of safe (1) main entries in stratified ground, (2) barrier pillars, (3) bleeder entries, (4) inter-panel barrier pillars, (5) room and pillar mines, (6) shafts, and (7) “tunnels” (Pariseau 2022).

The Fort Lawton Parallel Tunnel was built in 1990 - 1991 by Morrison Knudsen Corporation (MK) as an integral part of Seattle METRO's planned expansion of the Westpoint Treatment Plant. The project included a concrete lined 2542 m (8,340 ft) long tunnel bored in sands and clays under the presence of methane gas and over 27.4 m (90 ft) of ground water table. The tunnel roughly paral¬lels an existing and still operating 3.65 m (12 ft) diameter tunnel originally completed in 1909. The parallel tunnel was constructed using a Lovat 4.72 m (15 ft-6 in) earth pressure balanced TBM with ribs and timber lagging as primary support. The tunnel alignment crossed under as much as 91.4 m (300 ft) of overburden as well as twin mainline railway tracks; terminating in a shaft adja¬cent to the Seattle ship canal. The project was completed in June, 1991 after a final "wet-tap" tie-in to the existing brick-lined sewer; over five months ahead of the contract schedule. This paper will describe the construction methods, job site conditions and difficulties encoun¬tered on this very challenging and successful project.

"In this paper, a case study from Çayeli Bakir Isletmeleri A.S. (Rize, Turkey) about the selective flotation of copper minerals from sphalerite is discussed. Çayeli Cu-Zn Sulfide Ore contains different ore types, such as yellow ore, clastic ore, bornite-clastic ore, bornite-yellow ore, and black ore. For some of these ore types, selective flotation of copper and zinc is very difficult presumably due to presence of secondary copper minerals such as bornite, chalcocite and covellite, and also surface oxidation. These factors affect Cu-Zn selectivity due to activation of sphalerite particles in the ore during the process. The main objective of this work was to improve Cu-Zn selectivity by optimization of the pulp chemistry for different ore types of Çayeli ore. After preliminary flotation tests investigating effects of different chemical conditions, a plant survey was performed to determine the plant performance and sources of the problems when problematic bornite-clastic ore is treated in the plant. Various chemical conditions are tested in the laboratory scale test for better depression of sphalerite in copper flotation circuit. Combination of Na2S+ZnSO4+MBS was found to be the most effective depressant scheme. INTRODUCTION Ore variability is one of the most important factors affecting performance of a process plant both in short and long term planning. The geometallurgical modelling becomes a common tool to determine ore variability problems and develop the most efficient solution during life of mine (1, 2). Flowsheet design and equipment selection and sizing are usually done based on the results of ore variability test works. However, in some cases ore variability may not be foreseen during the design stage and therefore the solutions should be developed based on the existing flowsheet and equipment in the plant. In this situation, ore characterisation, problem statement and diagnostic testing should be applied step by step. The problem could be due to changing feed grade, mineralogical characteristics, grindability and surface characteristics when flotation is involved. The variability in feed grade with fixed mineralogy can be handled with relatively simple modifications (i.e. adjusting throughput or equipment capacity) in the plant. Variability in ore mineralogy is the most complex and difficult problem to tackle. Because, mineralogical variations could bring variations in mineral composition, texture and liberation. These variations can potentially lead to the variations in grindability of the ore and flotation behaviour. Variations in grindability are usually managed by optimization of operational parameters in grinding circuit, as it would be costly to replace the existing equipment in the circuit (3). The variations in flotation behaviour are mainly due to variations in mineral types and distribution, texture and surface oxidation. One or all of these factors could be observed in a flotation operation. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation both in plant and lab scale should be conducted for definition of source of the problem. The testwork to solve the problem and retrieve the performance is planned and conducted depending on the source of the problem (4, 5)."

Since 1900, smelters have produced in Canada over 10 million tonnes of iron silicate waste slag containing significant quantities of nickel, cobalt and copper. The slag is reduced with aluminum and calcium oxide additions to produce a copper, nickel, and cobalt enriched alloy and an obsidian slag. It was found that the obsidian slag contained very low copper, nickel, and cobalt contents, indeed below 0.06% of each the base metals. These metals have been collected in a type of ferroalloy with up to 1.6% Cu, 2.1% Ni, and 0.7% Co. These alloys can be recycled according to standard procedures in base metal smelters. Surprisingly, the obsidian slag was found to display good cementitious and pozzolanic properties, which is a requirement for cement production. The strength producing properties of the obsidian slag are considered to be exceptional at the 28 day standard test age. In most cases, the obsidian concrete is characterized by significantly greater strengths than control concrete tests and concrete containing fly ash or blast furnace slag. Compressive strength data at 365 days for the obsidian concrete is impressive.

Perlite is a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous rock. It is a form of natural volcanic glass the main constituent of which is amorphous silica (70-76%). Perlite, when heated rapidly to its softening temperature range, expands from four to twenty times its original volume, due to the presence of 2-6% ?combined? water, in a manner similar to popcorn as the H2O molecules vaporize and create countless tiny bubbles, which account for its exceptional physical properties: light weight (30-150 kg/m3), low thermal conductivity, cellular structure, in general. These properties make perlite adaptable for numerous end-uses, which can be distinguished into 2 categories: Expanded perlite applications in: a) Construction Materials market (e.g. Acoustical Tiles, light-weight insulating Mortars, self-levelling Concrete), b) Agriculture (e.g. Hydroponics), c) Food and Chemical industry (e.g. Filtration Media, Filler, etc.), d) Insulation and Heat resistance technology (e.g. Cryogenic vessels, Refractory Bricks, etc.). Unexpanded Graded perlite applications in: a) Phosphoric Fertilizers industry (additive in H3PO4 production), b) Foundry technology (slag-aid, insulating and heat resistance agent).

The vermiculite review arrived too late for the June issue. In 1992, production of commercial vermiculite in the United States increased 1 % to 170 kt (187,000 st), according to the US Bureau of Mines. The estimated value of vermiculite concentrate was $13.6 million, yielding an average value of $80/t ($72.50/st). Vermiculite is used in several physical forms. Use of the thermally exfoliated product include light weight aggregates, horticultural growth media, thermal insulation applications and absorbents for spill control and liquid waste containment. The untreated commercial concentrates are used as intumescent fillers in plaster board, gaskets and paints. Several chemically modified vermiculite products include clay-sized dispersions and granules for treating flue gas. South Africa was the only major foreign source of vermiculite used in the United States. It exported about 40 kt (44,000 st) to the United States last year. In 1992, Palabora Mining Co. began processing vermiculite in a new beneficiation mill at Phalabowra. It produced about 164 kt (181,000 st). Minor sources of foreign vermiculite concentrates consumed in the United States included about 140 kt (154,000 st) from China. Brazil also exports some concentrate to the United States.

Low world gold prices stimulate development and introduction of economically efficient ( cost saving) technology for operating gold mills. This report covers the results of testing and introduction of CIL technology to recover gold from flotation concentrate of Samarta gold concentration plant located in Buryatia (Russia). This plant is treated the ore of Zun Kholba gold deposit using gravity and flotation of gravity tails as preconcentration processes. Till recently high grade gold gravity concentrate was smelted to gold bullion and shipped to gold refinery, gravity middlings were leached by cyanidation in cone type equipment developed by Irgiredmet and flotation concentrate shipped to copper smelter. The disadvantages of flotation concentrate shipping to copper smelter are following: high concentrate transport cost; problem with gold shipped balance; high cost of flotation concentrate treatment; comparatively low gold recovery. In this connection IRGIREDMET developed the hydrometalurgical technology for gold recovery from flotation concentrate. The flowsheet was developed on the base of laboratory, pilot plant and industrial scale tests conducted by IRGIREDMET in 1987-1997 and lrgiredmet experience on CIP process testing and industrial scale introduction in Yakutia [1-6]. Blind drilled shafts are becoming increasingly popular as a secondary and sometimes primary means of ventilation. This is particularly true in the Appalachian coalfields. Some reasons for the rebirth of blind shafts are economics, timeliness, safety characteristics and their inherent independence from underground operations. Blind drilling has had limited use in hard rock and tunneling ventilation. Advances in cutters, bit design, equipment and lining systems have made blind drilled shafts the shaft construction technique of choice for ventilation specialists. History of blind drilling Blind drilling's roots include the Nevada test site, the coalfields of Appalachia and Germany, and the uranium mines of Arizona. Early technology was developed using a variety of equipment mainly of oilfield origin. Shafts completed by oilfield equipment ranged from the shallow 1.5 and 1.8 m (5 and 6 ft) lined shafts on the Nevada test site to two 3 m (10 ft) lined, 222 m (730 ft) deep shafts in Alberta for heavy oil development. Several of these shafts were completed to extraordinary depths. The record, completed in 1969, is a 2.28-m-diam (90-in.-diam), 1875-m (6150-ft) deep shaft, located in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.

The success of the industrial minerals end of the mining industry is often overshadowed by the high price of copper, the glamour of gold, and the nation's huge reserves of coal. Those three segments of the industry, however, along with every other business in the world, could not function without the products that are composed of a variety of industrial minerals. And, according to Haydn H. Murray, past president of SME, the value of industrial minerals in the United States is more than triple that of metals, about $19 billion a year versus $6 billion. In the developed countries of the world, he said, the value of industrial minerals is nearly always greater than the value of metallic minerals. Murray, also a professor of geology at Indiana University, was the luncheon speaker at the SME-sponsored Grinding of Industrial Minerals conference held in Asheville, NC this past September. Producers of industrial minerals know they must squeeze the maximum value out of the industrial mineral being mined and processed, Murray told the audience of about 100 people. Grinding and particle size, then, are vital to a commodity's profitability.

Mining has been a significant component of the Appalachian economy for about 200 years. The region continues to be adversely affected by the environmental degradation associated with these past activities. In addition, companies today are being denied permits at sites where acid generation appears likely. And air emission limitations at power plants now threaten the economic health of many moderate- to high-sulfur coal mines. Thus, when considering the environmental impacts of mining coal in Appalachia, it is important to consider abandoned and active mine issues. For example, abandoned mines generate acidic, iron-rich waters that adversely affect more than 6,400 km (4,000 miles) of rivers and streams in Appalachia. In contrast, operations that were active after the enactment of the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) cause little water pollution. However, the costs of water treatment at such sites exceed $1 million a day. Even where water quality is not dimished, water supplies can be affected by mining. Subsidence-induced fractures can lower water table elevations or drain a surface stream dry. Subsidence can also cause damage to surface and subsurface structures.

Contract 75-124-211 extends along the Chicago River from Roosevelt Road on the south to Ogden Avenue on the north. In addition a branch tunnel runs east from approximately mid-project ending near Lake Michigan. The contract was bid on December 14, 1977 with three joint-ventures submitting bids. Of these the joint venture of J.F. Shea Co., Inc. Walnut, California, (Sponsor), Peter Kiewit Sons' Co., Omaha, Nebraska and Shea Company and Associates, Walnut, California was low with a bid of $101,976,680.00. The MSD awarded the job to the Joint-Venture on January 5, 1978 with a scheduled completion date of January 23, 1983. The project consists of the following major items of work: (1.) A 25'-0" minimum diameter Construction Shaft, 220 feet deep (2.) 13,726 Linear Feet of 30'-0" Concrete lined Tunnel in rock (3.) 6,648 Linear Feet of 13'-0" Concrete lined Tunnel in rock (4.) Seventeen concrete lined Drop Shafts varying in finished diameter from 4'-0" to 12'-0", and each approximately 250 feet deep with chambers and connections to the tunnels varying from 100 to 1300 feet in length.

The McDonald gold deposit is located in the upper Blackfoot Valley in Lewis and Clark County in west-central Montana, about 65 km (40 miles) northwest of Helena and 13 km (8 miles) east of Lincoln (Fig. 1). The McDonald project area covers about 20.7 km2 (8 sq miles) of elevated terrain on the north side of the Blackfoot Valley. The Blackfoot River lies 1 km (0.6 miles) south of the McDonald deposit. East Butte and West Butte rise 300 m (985 ft) above the Blackfoot Valley to an elevation of 1,750 m (5,740 ft). They conveniently divide the area into two parts. The Seven-Up Pete Joint Venture (SPJV) is a partnership between Phelps Dodge Mining (72.25%) and CR Montana, a subsidiary of Canyon Resources (27.75%). SPJV controls about 83 km2 (32 sq miles) of mineral and surface rights in the Lincoln area. The McDonald project is on state-owned and private land. The joint venture has conducted exploration since 1989 at the Seven-Up Pete, McDonald and Keep Cool areas (Fig. 1).

Coal fines of less than 0.5 mm particle size, discarded as too fine for gravity separation, were subjected to flotation tests at varying pH and temperatures using modified dosages of kerosene as oil phase and methylisobutylketone (MIBK) as frother. Optimal coal recovery of over 74% was obtained using 200 kg kerosene and 4 kg MIBK per ton of coal fines at a pH of 9.7 and an ambient temperature of 26° C. The coal concentrate obtained under these optimal recovery conditions assayed 9.10% ash, 0.35% sulfur and 0.011% phosphorus, representing reductions in the ash, sulfur and phosphorus contents of approximately 75%, 43% and 8.3%, respectively. Its gross calorific value was 32.9 MJ/kg, its percentage of volatile matter measured 30.6 and the fixed carbon content was 66.3% (d.a.f). Caking tests showed the optimal concentrate has a standard welling number of 1 and is a Gray-King coke type C. These results show that the optimal flotation product could be utilized for such industrial purposes as steam raising or for processing in gasworks, but it would be unsuitable for metallurgical coke production.

INTRODUCTION Phase I of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project, known as MOS-1 (Minimum Operable Segment-1), is the first phase of the 27 km± (17 mi) subway starter line. MOS-1 is currently under construction and involves approximately 6.4 km (4.4 mi) of subway, five stations, yards and shops routed through the downtown area of Los Angeles. The project will form the initial heavy rail backbone of a more extensive light and heavy rail transit system planned for the greater Los Angeles area in the future. Construction Contract A-171 is one of 4 tunnel contracts within MOS-1 and involves construction of twin tunnels running from the downtown metropolitan area west to MacArthur Park. The heavily populated and developed downtown area, potentially gassy ground conditions, and the possibility of undocumented abandoned oil wells in seismically active southern California made the design and construction of Contract A-171 a uniquely interesting project. This paper summarizes the construction history to date (December, 1988) including design geotechnical considerations, tunnel support design, as-built geologic conditions, shield tunneling performance through soft ground, and ground response. Stemming plugs are used as an accessory in drilling and blasting industry. They supplement conventional stemming material (i.e. drill cutting) with retention of gases in the drill hole that result in better fragmentation of rock and improved explosive utilization. Better fragmentation and explosive utilization along with economic benefits enhance efficacy of the project. Incorporation of stemming plugs in drilling and blasting industry is in exercise for about thirty years. The efficiency of stemming plugs is a key factor in their rising induction in mining industry. Different studies have been conducted on the economic viability of these plugs. The focus of this paper is the selection of stemming plugs for a bench blasting operation and the examination of blasting operation efficiency based on ergonomics and human factors. Three types of stemming plugs were evaluated during multiple blasts at a limestone quarry. Their performance was evaluated using split desktop software. Based on the human factors plastic molded stemming plug (stemming plug-1) was found to be the best among all selected plugs. INTRODUCTION Surface mines and quarrying operations heavily depend on bench blasting to achieve high volumetric targets and production demands. Use of explosives is the most economic method adopted for rock breakage and movement. Extensive research had been performed to enhance explosives energy utilization. This include changing the drilling pattern, application of air decks, stemming plugs, and use of other supportive devices. Optimization of explosive energy has been a major concern in those mines that rely on drilling and blasting operation to carry out main production. Due to continually increasing cost, efficient mining demands, and associated hazards of using explosives, it is necessary to utilize explosives at their best. Efficiency of a blasting operation is generally evaluated by the fragmentation size. From post blast conditions at blasting site to efficiency of processing plant, anything can be affected due to improper blast resulting in bad fragmentation. Better fragmentation is necessity for better operation of the system along with consideration of the safety of operation, environmental issues and related costs. For developing a blast design, an engineer should always attempt to minimize the cost of operation without compromising with acceptable technical and safety necessities [1]. Blast performance is dependent on many different factors associated with the process. These factors have been gauged as blast geometry, explosive specification, and rock mass properties [2]. Similarly, in 2013 Mohammad et al. concluded that fragmentation dynamics depends on blast hole diameter, primer, spacing, stemming, burden, and delay timing for blasting operation [1]. At the work site where this study was performed, blast holes were filled by drill cuttings and muds to help in confining gases. In a blast hole, gas confinement helps in better rock fragmentation along with reduced flyrocks. This practice is most common in many countries including Pakistan. Due to lack of homogenized particle size, the effectiveness of confinement is variable and majorly based on the size of stemming. Extremely small sized drill cuttings often result in hole blow out along with flyrocks from the collar. This improper blast energy will result in poor blast, bad impacts on environment, and reduced operational efficiency. In addition to the stemming material, the length of stemming is also a prime consideration. The decrease in stemming length will increase the quantity of explosive in the blast hole and an increase in stemming material generally improves stemming performance.

INTRODUCTION The effect of stress concentration in coal seams leads to a sudden release in the form of rock bursts. This effect is controlled along many lines, but the most efficient methods consist in preventing the accumulation of energy in the seam or in the roof. The over- burden weight resulting from mining is the main cause of excessive stresses in a seam. An additional weighting of roof takes place due to formation of abutment loads. The accumulation of energy in the roof takes place where thick sandstone beds occur in overburden strata. An essential problem is to watch, with appropriate measurements, the stress of coal and roof rocks, and to conclude, on this basis, the degree of rock burst hazard. The methods for determining the stresses in a coal seam are quite well developed at present. Let me mention here the seismoacoustic methods, or borehole overcoring measurement methods. On the other hand, an examination of the state of stress in the roof rocks is almost impossible at the actual stage of development of the measuring technique. Hence, the model of stresses in roof was analyzed and determined theoretically. Based on this model, a technology for roof fracturing was developed which aims at destressing rock masses in a planned way. The essentials of the fracturing method consist of a controlled breaking of sandstone roof beds in order to: - prevent the excessive weight on the pillar - prevent a spontaneous breaking of roof beds at a limiting state followed by sudden energy release. High pressure fluid infusion is used to release buildup of stresses. THEORETICAL AND RESEARCH BASES According to the tests carried out by A. Kidybinski by the method of finite elements, isobars of stresses occurring in the roof over the working face are shown in [Fig. 1]. The results indicate: - the highest values of compressive stresses occur in the roof directly over the seam, at a distance of about 5 m ahead of the working face - at a distance of about 22 m above the seam there is a line of transition of compressive stresses into tensile - within the tested roof area, the highest tensile stresses occur at a vertical distance of 35 m, and at a horizontal distance of 20 m from the line of the working face. Gil (1) determined the pres- sure initiating the fracture of roof rocks by the formula: [ ] On the basis of results of analysis of isobars, and of the initiation of failure stress formula (1), isobars may be designed for a given roof class. Assuming for sandstones the Poisson ratio equal 0.3, a field of failure stresses presented in [Fig. 2] is obtained. In this figure it can be seen in which areas the effects of sandstone breakage may be obtained with the operation of a determined hydraulic pressure. To use formula (I), the knowledge of Rr is still necessary. This value may be determined in two ways: - taking a sample and testing it in the laboratory, if there is access to roof rocks in the existing openings, - drilling boreholes in the roof from surface and examination of the rock mass by using hydraulic breaking, if there is no access to roof rocks.

INTRODUCTION In uranium miners, a causal relationship between exposure of the lung to high levels of alpha radiation and the consequential induction of bronchial carcinoma is now well-established (Wagoner, et al., 1965). Quantitation of this cause-effect association presents considerable difficulty, however, as the result of various confounding factors such as the contributing effects of smoking and/or arsenic exposure (Archer, Gillam, and Wagoner, 1976), normal metabolic variability and, perhaps most important of all, the absence of accurate radon/radon daughter exposure data. Estimates of cumulative lung exposures suffer from inaccuracy due to critical factors such as 1) unknown ventilation rates; 2) difficulties in obtaining representative mine air samples; 3) the variable character and magnitudes of the exposure sources; and 4) specific differences in metabolism and job histories that exist among miners. It was with considerable enthusiasm, therefore, that investigators readily embraced the idea of using skeletal burdens of the relatively longlived descendants of radon and its short-lived daughters, i.e., 210 Pb and 210Po (Archer, et al., 1968), to provide a measure of cumulative past exposure wherein the body acts as an integrating dosimeter. Early studies considered excretion rates of 210Pb and 210Po in urine, blood and hair (Sultzer and Hursh, 1954; Black, et al., 1968; Jaworowski, 1965; Bell and Gilliland, 1964) as well as their concentrations in bone samples, if and when they became available (Blanchard, Archer, and Saccomanno, 1969). These methods were ultimately complemented by in vivo, whole-body counting techniques using low background, NaI-Csl(T1) detectors (Eisenbud, et al., 1969). By this latter method, it would be possible to measure the skeletal burden of 210Pb directly, thereby avoiding the many difficulties associated with the relation between nuclide excretion rates and body burden. The rationale was simple; by knowing the skeletal burden of 210Pb it should be possible, by the judicious use of an applicable metabolic model, to estimate the cumulative lung exposure to alpha-emitting radon daughters (Fig. 1). Various models that were consequently constructed, however (Fisher, 1969), all suffered from the same limitation, i.e., the assumption that the source of 210 Pb in the skeleton and the source of lung exposure to the short-lived radon daughters were simply related and, if not, were at [ ] least not too variable (Raabe, 1970). By now, the difficulty with this assumption has been recognized and more sophisticated modeling techniques have been attempted which presumably present a more realistic picture of exposure conditions (Holtzman and Rundo, 1981). There is, nevertheless, the pessimistic view that due to the variety and variability (in time as well as in character) of sources that may exist for the origin of 210Pb in bone, it may [never] be possible to estimate past lung exposures accurately by an indirect, predictive model. For example, the origin of 210 Pb in the skeleton may include such sources as: 1) the decay of short-lived 222Rn daughters, inhaled and ingested; 2) the decay of 222Rn dissolved in body fluids and tissues; 3) directly from 210 Pb present in air, inhaled and ingested; and 4) 210Pb from non-occupational sources, e.g., food, water, smoking and endogenous 226Ra. The contribution of each of these sources may vary depending upon specific site conditions such as ventilation and mining operation. This work addresses the design and production-scheduling problem by considering minimum operational space requirements under a Direct Block Scheduling approach to generate extraction sequences that satisfy the operational space required. For this, traditional formulations were extended by including a new set of constraints that generate operating spaces for mining equipment to move and extract material. Then, a heuristic algorithm produces close to optimal practical pushbacks. This proposal was applied in a case study, and the results show its ability to generate practical production schedules without sacrificing expected return, obtaining differences in terms of Net Present Value (NPV) lower than 1% when compared to the traditional approach.

"Crossrail is Europe’s largest construction project — a new 100km rail route running through central London. A joint venture of BAM, Ferrovial and Kier (BFK) has constructed the tunnels and escalator shafts at the new Bond Street and Farringdon Stations. The recent trend in the UK industry towards sprayed secondary linings is driven by the potential for significant savings in cost and time. BFK is unique within Crossrail by constructing both sprayed and cast secondary linings. This paper presents a direct comparison between sprayed and traditional cast in situ secondary linings at Bond Street and Farringdon Crossrail Stations. An objective comparison is drawn between procurement and mobilisation periods, production rates, flexibility, tolerances and logistics in the tunnels. The technical challenges surrounding cast and sprayed secondary linings are explored, and recommendations are made of how each method could be improved for future use. INTRODUCTION It is well established that sprayed concrete offers a fast and effective method to seal the face of an excavation. In a relatively short space of time, sprayed concrete can be applied to an open face to support the short term ground loading on the tunnels during construction. Advances in sprayed concrete lining (SCL) technology — such as the use of wet mix processes, improved accelerators, fiber reinforcement, remotely controlled spraying robots, innovative surveying equipment and nozzleman competency schemes — have greatly increased the speed and safety of tunnel excavations using this technique. As a result, design engineers have become increasingly confident to use SCL primary linings as part of the permanent structural lining (Su 2014). Historically, long term ground and water pressure loads have been considered to be carried by the main structural or secondary lining, constructed using cast in situ concrete (Pickett 2014). However, the advances described above have made sprayed secondary linings a viable option, which has already been proven on the A3 Hindhead Tunnel (Arnold 2012). Sprayed concrete secondary linings offer potentially significant savings in cost and time during the construction process. The contractor does not need to procure a bespoke formwork system for each different sized tunnel — the SCL plant required is already on site for the primary lining. Each bay is sprayed with accelerated concrete, becoming self-supporting almost immediately — compared to moving and resetting the shutter, pumping concrete and waiting for it to cure. With sprayed concrete, working sequences and cross sections can easily be changed."

Media mills operate by having energy transferred to the media which in turn grinds the feed material in a packed bed. Regardless of the mill type, the media energy density per unit surface area is constant. Since for optimum grinding conditions, both peak pressures and particle number of the bed depth are constant, the frequency of energy input is inversely proportional to feed size. As the particle size decreases the voles energy density increases linearly necessitating cooling in stirred mills. Grinding finer particles therefore, requires moving from rotary to vibratory mills, and the finest, the stirred mills.
