INTRODUCTION The accomplishment of a well engineered design, and the realization of efficient plant operation cannot be achieved without weaving a web of safety consciousness from the beginning of the project. When the plant becomes operational, and throughout its life, responsibility safety will rest with the client or operator. Recognition of this understanding does not reduce the importance of the engineering and construction contractor's role, but merely puts the responsibility where it belongs. A project which has had little or no operator input during the early stages of design is almost certain to have serious work place safety, health, and environmental problems in spite of the fact that all MSHA and OSHA design requirements were met and the engineering was performed using accepted practices. DEFINITIONS The author has a personal preference in safety definitions that begins and ends with simplicity. If the safety criteria, program, and rules are confusing or complex, the results will soon become obvious. Confusing and complex are the key elements in the avoidance of responsibility and if punitive is added to the list, a brew exists which breeds accidents, illness, and poor performance. A safely designed and operated plant is one that a worker can journey to each day; leaving that person and his or her family with the above average expectation that the person will return healthy, emotionally intact, and hopefully a little wealthier. If the objective or results of a planned or existing safety program don't fit the definition. then the reader is probably contemplating a very sophisticated

To allow recovery of gold values from ore which cannot be economically processed by the mill, Pinson Mining Company has developed a run-of-mine heap leaching facility. In order to estimate production scale recovery rates, reagent consumption and percolation problems, a series of pilot scale tests were performed. These tests typically consisted of 3,630 metric tons (mt) (4,000 tons) leach ore at a grade of .94 to 1.56 grams per metric ton (g/mt) (.03 to .05 oz.) Au/Ton. Test heaps were loader stacked to approximately 4.3 meters (14 feet) high. Information from these pilot scale tests was employed in the design and construction of the production scale facility. Parameters such as spray rate, leach cycle, sprinkler placement, and barren solution chemistry were determined by the pilot tests.

To facilitate the installation of the longwall equipment for each extraction panel, West Elk mine develops set-up room roadways that are between 26.5 and 30.5 feet wide. Historically at the mine, the set-up room roadways have been driven in a single 20-foot-wide pass, then incrementally widened to the required width during installation of the longwall shields. The first pass roof is supported with a generic roof support plan consisting of partially encapsulated roof bolts and point-anchored cables. This ground support plan was utilized regardless of the geotechnical conditions encountered in the roadways or consideration of the required stand-up time of the roadway before the longwall shields were installed. This "blanket" approach tends to result in over-conservative or inappropriate roof support designs, particularly in changing geotechnical environments. Guided by the desire to optimize the ground support plans and increase mining efficiency for future set-up rooms, the West Elk mine and Agapito Associates, Inc. have developed and implemented a strata management program. Strata management, as a formal and structured process, allows ground support and mining methods to be tailored to the anticipated and encountered geotechnical environment in a con- trolled manner (Thomas 2007). To arrive at adequate site-specific ground support plans for the set-up rooms at the mine, several struc- tured processes were utilized. Firstly, the geotechnical environment was characterized by examining the roof lithology and geomechanical properties from nearby rock core obtained from exploration boreholes. To increase both mining efficiency and continuity, and to achieve longer stand-up times before the longwall shields are installed, a multi-pass approach was implemented into the design. During mining, the geotechnical conditions of the roadway are mapped, and the roof is strategically surveyed with a borescope. This process was used to ensure that the encountered ground behavior was in alignment with the design standards used for the roof support design. To support this process with measured data, roof extensometers were strategically installed throughout the roadway. This data was used to monitor the magnitude of roof displacement at various horizons and record displacement rates up until the longwall shields were installed. Lastly, a Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP) was used during mining to cater for any unforeseen changes in ground conditions that would warrant additional con- trols such as increased monitoring or the installation of additional ground support. This paper presents two case histories at the mine where the above strata management approach was implemented to arrive at a site-specific ground support plan. The main changes to the mine's ground control plan included a multi-pass mining approach, the utilization of fully encapsulated roof bolts, and the transition to a stiffer roof support system. The geotechnical mapping, the roof borescope results, and the roof extensometer data will be presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the ground support system up until the longwall shields were installed in both presented cases.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the New Mexico Bureau of Mines is conducting an assessment of mineral resources in the 36,800 km2 Mimbres Resource Area, southwestern New Mexico. Included in the assessment is a literature-based evaluation of sand and gravel that utilizes third party geologic information. The USGS has developed a method based on existing 1:500,000 scale geologic maps supplemented by remote sensing, statistical models, and point data such as test hole or pit records. The method defines the areal extent, quality, and quantity of aggregate.

Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Oxide were two of the early forms of man-made abrasives often referred to as synthetic and were invented at the turn of the century. Edward G. Acheson invented Silicon Carbide in 1893 and Charles F. Jacobs filed a patent for the manufacture of fused alumina from bauxite in 1900. Jacobs' patent provided a method for tempering the alumina by reduction and fusion to a degree of hardness and toughness suitable for abrasive purposes. These two inventions are the basis of the synthetic abrasive industry today. Improvements have been made in the equipment used in the process, however the process itself remains basically the same. In 1904 A. C. Higgins observed that hot spots developed on the shell of the pot furnace used in the reduction of bauxite. He found that by spraying water on the hot spots they could be prevented and, in addition, they failed to return in the same place. Higgins reasoned that the cooling effect of the water caused the melt contacting the metal shell to freeze as an insulating autogenous refractory. This suggested that an improved furnace design could be obtained by using a metal shell which is continuously flooded with water on the exterior surface. Paradoxically, a furnace required to contain tons of molten Aluminun Oxide was thus constructed of nothing but a sheet steel shell with no refractory lining at all. A test of such an arrangement was tried by Higgins with considerable trepidation and was found to be extremely satisfactory.

Mining in Cushenbury Canyon began in 1860 when John Cushenbury left his Holcomb Valley gold prospect and discovered a silver vein in the limestones of the present day Cushenbury Mine. Cushenbury Canyon is located along the western boundary of the Mojave Desert in Southern California and on the north slope of the San Bernardino Mountains. The Holcomb Valley, immediately southeast of Cushenbury Canyon was the most prolific gold producer in Southern California. Gold mining dominated the area until World War II when interest in the Lucerne Valley Limestone deposits was peaked by the construction of the Kaiser Steel Plant in Fontana, California. The steel making process required large amounts of metallurgical grade limestone and Kaiser geologists located claims in most of the limestone deposits. Kaiser Cement constructed a cement plant and limestone mine in Cushenbury Canyon in 1956. Kaiser Cement modernized the facility in 1982 to a four stage preheater-precalciner system. Mitsubishi Cement Corp. purchased the property in April, 1988, and through further system modifications have created the most efficient and modern cement plant in the United States.

INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a research facility located in Southeastern New Mexico. The WIPP is being developed by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) to demonstrate the safe storage of defense-related radioactive wastes in bedded salt. Since the WIPP is a research facility. a number of large-scale in situ experiments have been planned and are currently under construction (Munson, 1983). These experiments were designed to study various aspects of nuclear waste storage in bedded salt such as mechanical responses and creep closures of drifts, thermal response due to heated canisters, and thermally-induced fluid migration. One purpose of the WIPP is to develop and demonstrate a general predictive structural analysis capability for a bedded salt repository. One set of experiments, called the Geomechanical Evaluation (Room G), is heavily instrumented to study the creep around several rooms with different configuration. A Layout of the Geomechanical Evaluation room is shown in Figure 1. One portion of it consists of wedge shaped pillar where two drifts intersect at an angle of 7.5 degrees. The pillar can be seen at the bottom of Figure 1. One purpose of the wedge pillar experiment is to study progressive pillar failure in the tip region. Another is to determine how nonuniform pillar thickness affects creep closure of the drifts. An important aspect of the experiments is the correlation between experimental data and corresponding pretest finite element analyses of the site. The finite element simulations serve two purposes. First, the computer simulations aid in understanding the experimental results by providing calculated stress. strain and displacement fields that cannot be measured directly. Second, comparison of calculated and measured drift closures serves as a method for validating or improving the finite element models and the constitutive models employed. The wedge pillar geometry required a 3-D finite element creep calculation. Results from these 3-D calculations will be presented in this paper. A 2-D plane strain double drift model which approximates the wedge pillar geometry at a slice perpendicular to the drift has also been performed and will be compared to the 3-D results in this paper. FINITE ELEMENT COMPUTER PROGRAMS Two finite element computer programs. JAC (Biffle, 1984) and JAC3D (Biffle. 1986), were used. JAC is a 2-D finite element program developed for quasi-static analysis of non-linear solids. It employs the conjugate gradient iterative technique to obtain a solution Spatial integration is performed using a single gauss point in each four node quadrilateral element. An hourglass viscosity technique is used to control the zero energy modes that occur with single point integration. The single point integration combined with the explicit nature of the program and exploitation of CRAY-1 computer architecture results in very efficient execution J4: results were compared to results obtained with eight other 2-D structural creep computer codes in the second WIPP benchmark exercise (Morgan, 1981) JAC3D was derived from JAC to treat 3-D finite element models and has many of the same characteristics including single point integration and hourglass viscosity. Introduction Comminution efficiency, as measured by relating circuit performance to the consumption of energy and the time and money required, can be determined by the following comparisons: Theoretical efficiency: The theoretical efficiency is the actual energy consumed in a comminution machine compared to the theoretical energy required to perform the size reduction. Operating efficiency: The operating efficiency compares the operating work index of a comminution machine to the Bond work index of the ore, as determined from bench-scale crushing and grindability tests or pilot-plant tests. Economic efficiency: The economic efficiency is comparing income from production to predicted income. Key words: Comminution, Bond work index, Grinding, Crushing, Ball mills, Rod Mills. Theoretical efficiency In their book Process Engineering of Size Reduction - Ball Milling, Austin, Klimpel and Luckie (1984) stated that, "We have tried throughout this book to avoid the use of the term grinding efficiency because the degree of conversion of energy to useful size reduction is an ill-defined concept. In addition, the only efficiency, which is of real interest, is the meeting of product specifications at the minimum cost." The National Materials Advisory Board, National Re¬search Council (1981), in the abstract of a report titled "Comminution and Energy Consumption" stated that, "Up to 99% of the energy consumed in grinding these ores may be expended in the movement of machinery, with noise and heat the undesirable byproducts, thus leaving only 1% of the energy available for size reduction. Coupled with this is evidence that many of today's crushing and grinding techniques not only are antiquated but have little or no scientific base of understanding." Throughout the past 50-plus years, grinding efficiency has been referred to as being from 1 % to 10%. The measurable basis for these observations is difficult to establish, but they appear to be based on production performance compared to theoretical energy requirements for the work done. The theoretical energy requirements were determined from the energy required to break a single particle or a thin layer of monosized particles by compression or by a single impact from an impact-testing device. King, Tavaras and Middlemiss (1997), in a paper titled "Establishing the energy efficiency of a ball mill" described such a test. These batch single-breakage tests generally do not duplicate the continuous-breakage process in the comminution machinery used in ore concentrators. Operating efficiency The currently available crushers and grinding mills are fed at a controlled continuous flow rate, and they impart the breakage pattern needed to produce the desired size reduc¬tion. While theoretically inefficient, they are the most practical comminution machines available. The operation of this machinery is relatively simple and can be controlled with available control systems. The essential factors in determining the operating efficiency of comminution machines are energy, as consumed in the machinery, and the required energy, as determined from test work. Bond work indices, obtained from bench-scale or pilot-plant crushability and grindability tests are used in the following Bond equation (Bond, 1960) to determine the energy required to produce the required size reduction

The elimination of ultrafine (<10 µm) clay particles is essential to the treatment of abandoned coal-washing plant tailings for the recovery of the remaining coal fraction by enhanced gravity processing. Effective hydrocyclone classification is required to remove this fraction. The highly variable composition and particle size distribution of such wastes creates significant difficulties in the operation of hydrocyclones for such classifications. Hydrocyclone laboratory investigations and their plant setup require lengthy or time-consuming tests. The use of empirical models of such classifications frequently requires modification to correspond to actual operating conditions. Results of the evaluation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to predict hydrocyclone classification of coal-washing plant tailings are presented. Results of the standard k-epsilon turbulence, SSG turbulence and large eddy simulation CFD models are compared with the results obtained from analyzed hydrocyclone classifications. The CFD models tested are shown to be very effective in the simulation of hydrocyclone classifications for the determination of the classification particle size and adequate for determining the efficiency index values for many applications. The large eddy simulation model was identified as the most precise, but it is recommended that all three models be improved simulations of classifications above and below the classification particle size.

Over 100 saprolite samples from Turkey Hill Gold Mine, Lumpkin County, Georgia, were analyzed (-80 mesh) for As, Au, and Sb. Maximum values are 16.2 ppm As, 7.9 ppm Au, and 29.1 ppm Sb. Results show trace element content of saprolite varies with topography: ridge top samples show a pronounced decrease in Au and Sb, and to a lesser degree in As, whereas, slope and valley samples have anomalous Au and Sb concentrations, with no discernable pattern for As. Statistical analysis shows strong correlation between Au and Sb and none between Au and As. This study will serve as a model for gold exploration in deeply weathered terrains with variable relief.

DC Water’s Clean Rivers (DCCR) program involves the construction of approximately 29 km (18 mi) of CSO tunnels in Potomac Group soils in the Washington DC area. Soils include an upper predominantly over-consolidated fine grained plastic material facies (P/A) and lower predominantly coarsegrained facies (PTX). As earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are mainly used in such soils, the correct approach to soil conditioning can make a considerable difference in TBM performance. Soil conditioning laboratory tests are often completed during the planning phase prior to TBM excavation to develop a baseline for soil conditioning, reduce risks, minimize costs, and improve performance. However, only a few basic tests are standardized to date, and conditioning regimes are fine-tuned during the mining phase. The paper illustrates the effort carried out to identify the correct soil conditioning regime for both PA and PTX facies to improve TBM overall performance and reduce ground movement during the excavation of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) in Washington DC.

"In this study, the interaction between magnetite and the additive olivine was studied after oxidation as well as after isothermal reduction at temperatures in the 500º-1,300º C range. In the olivine sample, the forsteritic olivine particles react partly during the oxidation pretreatment to form magnesioferrite and vitreous silica along the particle corona. This breakdown of the olivine particles during oxidation liberates magnesium from the particles, which do not react until temperatures of above 1,150° C in reducing atmosphere. When the hematite in the sample is reduced, and when the temperature is high enough to allow solid-state diffusion at ~800º C, the magnesium of the magnesioferrite redistributes, so that the magnesium concentration approaches the same level throughout the iron oxide structure. For magnetite, this did not occur until 800° C. At 1,000° C, this magnesium reacts further with the silica in the glassy slag phase, which crystallizes into fayalitic olivine. At this temperature, the magnesium has diffused over distances of more than 600 µm from large olivine particles after 2 hrs reduction. From this point, the primary slag phase in the pellet, until melting, is solid fayalite. Upon reduction to metal, the metallization front concentrates the MgO in the remaining wustite, which can lead to MgO levels of up to 10 mole% locally. The melting point of the fayalite is raised from 1,145º C to a melting range of 1,238-1,264º C due to the MgO increase, as estimated based on phase diagrams, which were adapted to the pellets tested. Much of the olivine that remained unaltered in the oxidation process will be encapsulated by iron before the particles begin to dissolve in reducing conditions and, therefore, plays no role in the reduction before final melting of the particles occurs.IntroductionEnvironmental concerns have placed increasing pressure on the CO2-intensive iron and steel industries to further optimize operation toward higher productivity and more efficient use of reducing agents. At the same time, high demand for iron ore has caused new iron ores with lower grades and more complex chemistries to be taken into production. In Scandinavia, the main iron-bearing material is magnetite-based pellets with olivine, which allow operation with very low slag volumes and, hence, lower fuel rate ( Slagnes and Sundqvist Ökvist, 2008; Hallin et al., 1994). Both the MgO and SiO2 of the olivine, as well as the elements of the gangue of the ore, i.e., Si, Mg, Ca, Al and alkali, interact with the iron oxides to give the finished pellet product its final properties in the blast furnace. Tailoring the additive mix to be used for a certain iron ore for optimal product properties, therefore, requires detailed knowledge of the mechanisms by which these elements dissolve and react in the pellet."

INTRODUCTION Shabanie mine, situated some 180 km east of Bula¬wayo, has been a producer of chrysotile asbestos for more than 50 years. The ore bodies occur in serpentinized dunite, which overlies talc-carbonate schist. A zone of relatively competent rock of varying thickness occurs between the schist and the ore bodies, which are gen¬erally less competent. The hanging wall of the ore bodies is economic, and the hanging-wall serpentine carries a variable subeconomic amount of fiber. It is important to note that, in general, the ore body competence is less than that of the foot and hanging-wall formations. Historical After surface operations ceased, cut-and-fill stoping was used to win ore from underground; this was success¬ful until the increasingly stoped-out area caused insta¬bility in the stope pillars and back. Consequently, dur¬ing the early 1950s, a gradual change to cave-mining methods was made, the ore being won by hand lashing in drawpoints, situated in the basement of the stope blocks, and passed through orepasses under gravity to the haulage level some 13 m below. About this time, interest was focused on the sub¬level caving method in use in Swedish iron ore mines: it was felt that it might be applied economically to the Shabanie ore bodies. Accordingly, in 1958, an experi¬mental stope block was laid out in which sublevel inter¬vals and extraction tunnel spacing were 9 m. The tun¬nels (ring drilling drives) were oriented on strike-in contrast to the Swedish system, in which crosscuts that retreat from hanging to footwall are used. The advantages of the method were quickly appre¬ciated by the operating personnel and, despite the in¬evitable teething troubles pertaining to the introduction of any new mining method, it was not long before sub¬level caving was providing a high proportion of the mill feed. The disadvantages also became apparent at an early stage, however, and, from that time to the present, continuing modifications have been made to mining lay¬outs in an effort to improve ore recovery. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The mine is served by a vertical hoisting shaft, in which two skips, a man cage and a service cage, provide adequate capacity for production requirements. The rock hoist is a Ward Leonard control hoist, in which two electric motors drive a common gearbox. The man winder is driven by an a-c motor. Several auxiliary shafts provide secondary egress and intake and return ventilation. Main haulage levels are above (Fig. I a and b). Blasthole fan patterns are drilled by drifters of 100 mm bore, drilling 41-mm holes; when a sufficient strike length has been drilled, a slot is cut in the upper¬most sublevel and the rings are broken into the slot. Initially, a limited tonnage is drawn, since it is essential to ensure that the hanging wall caves behind the retreat¬ing stope face. Once this has been established, maxi¬mum tonnage can be drawn, as described later in this chapter, under the heading "Draw Control." The broken rock is loaded by 0.14 and 0.20-m3 load¬ers into cocopans (rocker-dumping type of tipping truck), which are hand trammed to orepasses, discharg¬ing on the haulage where 11-t electric trolley locomo¬tives haul 3.95-m3 Granby cars to the main shaft bins. As is evident from Fig. 1, the layout is simple, the block is brought rapidly into production, there is a high degree of selectivity and flexibility, and the result is a low-cost high-productivity mining method. DEVELOPMENT Main haulages are developed at 3.2 x 3.2 m, and once the service winze connections have been completed the development of the sublevels is undertaken. The footwall drives are cut first, to obtain access to the block. These ends are of the standard section, 2.4 x 2.8 m, and from them crosscuts at intervals of 70 m are driven through the ore body to the hanging wall. These crosscuts are used to supplement the geo¬logical information previously obtained from diamond core drilling, and they provide additional and more de¬tailed data on fiber percentages and lengths, structural features, and other relevant criteria which are used to build up the geological assessment of the area and to classify it in terms of the geomechanics rock classification (Laubscher and Taylor, 1977). The crosscuts also allow the necessary orepasses to be sited conveniently so that tramming distances from the loading points are not excessive. Development Drilling Once the skeleton development has been completed, the extraction headings are developed at 2.4 x 2.4 m as shown in Fig. 1. Standard development practice is to use crews of a machine operator and his helper, equipped with air-leg mounted jackhammers, to drill rounds of 1.8 m with integral tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Copper has been mined in the Philippines since at least as early as the Ming dynasty (1368 A.D. to 1644 A. D.). The principal source areas of this early production were in Camarines Norte (Paracale), in the Mountain Province, which now boasts the largest number of Philippine porphyry copper deposits, in Masbate and in Surigao, The Spanish Era began in 1521. Although they were primarily interested in gold, the Spaniards operated several copper mines including the San Remigio mine on Panay and the Lepanto mine in northern Luzon, beginning in 1842 and 1865 respectively. Prior to World War II most of the Philippine copper production was supplied by these same two mines together with the Hixbar mine, Rapu Rapu Island which began operation in 1939. The Hixbar and San Remigio mines are cupriferous pyrite deposits and the Lepanto is a vein-¬form replacement deposit (Kinkel et al. ,I 1956). No significant copper production was derived from porphyry copper occurrences prior to world War II.

The expanding: demand for ilmenite for use in the manufacture of titanium pigments, the knowledge that much of this raw material comes from distant points and therefore has to include a heavy freight charge in the price of the delivered product, and the further knowledge that ilmenite occurs both in the crystalline rocks of northern New Jersey and also in some of the Triassic igneous rocks, were considerations which led to a search for ilmenite-bearing sands in southern New Jersey. That this search was successful is now history, and it is the senior author&apos;s privilege to state here that most of the credit belongs to his associates who did all of the heavy work of hand-augering for samples, and who made all of the heavy-mineral separations. We all are grateful to members of the Department of Geology at Rutgers and Princeton Universities for the use of equipment which enabled us to evaluate certain samples from our ilmenite exploration program. In addition, we wish to express our appreciation to many companies for their cooperation and for their permission to publish mineral and chemical analyses. As the tunneling industry continues to adopt Tunnel 4.0, digital twins of the tunnel construction site are becoming standard requirements for tunneling projects. However, the benefits of these remain unproven to many practitioners. The paper discusses the various implementations of digitalization and describes efforts to combine all data types to analyze the relationships between influences, predictions and performance in a single digital platform. This includes data pertaining to investigations, design, construction, monitoring and post-construction asset performance and management. Based on 16 years of global tunneling projects the paper aims to quantify the tangible and intangible benefits of such systems. Using a number of real examples, the paper describes where opportunities were taken and where they went unrealized. Challenges and considerations for both procuring and developing these digital twins are also discussed.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently studied several redirected scrubber discharge configurations in its full-scale continuous miner gallery for both dust and gas control when using an exhaust face ventilation system. Dust and gas measurements around the continuous mining machine in the laboratory showed that the conventional scrubber discharge directed outby the face with a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust curtain setback appeared to be one of the better configurations for controlling both dust and gas. Redirecting all the air towards the face equally up both sides of the machine increased both the dust and gas concentrations around the machine. When all the air was redirected towards the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, gas accumulations tended to be reduced at the face at the expense of increased dust levels in the return and on the curtain side of the mining machine. A 6.1-m (20-ft) exhaust curtain setback without the scrubber operating resulted in the lowest dust levels around the continuous mining machine, but this configuration resulted in some of the highest levels of dust in the return and gas on the off-curtain side of the mining face. Two field studies showed some similarities to the laboratory findings, with elevated dust levels at the rear corners of the continuous miner when all the scrubber exhaust was redirected towards the face either up the off-tubing side or equally up both sides of the mining machine.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research to evaluate the potential for developing an in situ leach mining process that will selectively extract manganese from oxide ores, leaving gangue relatively undisturbed. To accomplish this, a geochemical approach, based on deposit-specific information such as mineralogy and geology, is used to constrain the operating parameters of the system. Among the studies being conducted are (1) leaching experiments to define reaction mechanisms and kinetics, (2) detailed petrologic characterization at the microscopic scale to assess Mn distribution and leaching efficiencies, (3) deposit characterization and evaluation, and (4) development of potential Mn recovery schemes. Data from these studies are being used to develop engineering design information for an in situ mining process. Specific details of the Bureau&apos;s research project are discussed, including results obtained to date.

Enclosed cabs have been used on surface mining equipment for many years to protect equipment operators from health and safety hazards. The surface mining and quarrying process is a highly mechanized process that generates large quantities of respirable dust. Due to economic factors, more older mining equipment is being used today than in years past. With this older equipment, it is common to observe deterioration of many components on the enclosed cabs, which greatly reduce their protection effectiveness. NIOSH has performed a number of different field studies, as well as a comprehensive laboratory study, evaluating various factors and parameters regarding enclosed cabs. NIOSH has recently completed a cooperative research effort to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly designed unidirectional powered precleaner, filter and pressurizer that brings clean filtered air in at the roof of the cab and extracts all recirculated air near the floor. This research effort provided another example of the enhancement in air quality that can be achieved in an enclosed cab from the implementation of an improved filtration system and by establishing positive pressurization from increased intake air volume and sealing the cab. This testing showed a significant reduction in respirable dust levels in the enclosed cab when comparing baseline versus post-testing results. Since dust levels were similar near the roof and floor of the cab during post-testing, the unidirectional flow pattern did not appear to significantly improve the performance over the conventional design in this study.

University of Idaho scientists research under U.S. Bureau of Mines Cooperative Agreement C0278001 constitutes a complex hydrogeological, hydrochemical and metallurgical mine waste management project at an existing Superfund site. Technologies that may prove useful for the extraction of dissolved metals from acid mine water and solid wastes include lixiviation and biosorption. Acid mine water is the major, long-term problem in the valley. We are attempting to delineate the major sources of ground water recharge which feed the acid mine drainage and their hydraulic properties. Grouting of recharge areas may facilitate minimizing the production of acid mine drainage if recharge pathways can be identified.
