Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) have more or less become the preferred method of tunneling in various ground conditions and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) or microprocessors are standard features on TBMs to monitor and record various sensory systems on the machine providing the possibility for machine automation and control. The data collected from these sensory systems and channeled through PLC is stored for real-time analysis or use by the operators. Based on typical construction specifications, part of the information collected in the process is shared with the project management team representing the owner. Machine data automatically acquired during TBM advance is typically processed by specialized software to offer the project team data visualization and evaluation options. Interfacing with Geographic Information System (GIS), Computer-Aided Design (CAD), 3-D geologic model, instrumentation data bases, and Document Management Systems (DMS) allows for developing Building Information Models (BIM) of the tunnel’s as-built condition. Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) processes such as Machine Learning (ML) have already been used for analysis of data, including performance prediction of hard rock TBMs, and exhibited the potential of big data analytics in improving the productivity of the operations. This paper outlines anticipated disruptive technological advances with implications on geotechnical exploration, TBM operation, face condition tracking, subsurface risk allocation, and claims management in the future.

The Vulture Mine near Wickenburg, Arizona was a major gold producer from 1863 to 1942, having yielded about 11,000 kg Au and 8,000 kg Ag. Gold occurs as coarse native metal and electrum in quartz veins and also finely disseminated within a quartz monzonite sill and its silicified wall rock. The sill is semi-conformable within a Proterozoic volcaniclastic-dominated sequence all dipping north about 35°. Early mining focused on the vein-hosted gold particularly in the immediate hanging wall and footwall of the sill. Later efforts included some open-pitting of the outcropping sill and adjacent altered and mineralized rock. Two sets of post-mineral faults have complicated the orebody geometry.

Among underground coal miners, hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses. In response, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to reduce the noise emission of underground coal-mining equipment, an example of which is a roof bolting machine. Field studies show that, on average, drilling noise is the loudest noise that a roof bolting machine operator would be exposed to and it contributes significantly to the operators? noise exposure. NIOSH has determined that the drill steel and chuck radiate a significant amount of noise during drilling. NIOSH and the Corry Rubber Corporation have developed a bit isolator that breaks the steel-to-steel link between the drill bit and drill steel and a chuck isolator that breaks the mechanical connection between the drill steel and the chuck. This effectively reduces the noise radiated by the drill steel and chuck and reduces the noise exposure of the roof bolter operator. The paper documents the evolution of the bit isolator and chuck isolator. Laboratory testing confirms that production bit and chuck isolators reduce the A-weighted sound level generated during drilling by 3.7 to 6.6 dB

The phytoremediation method is proposed to recover valuable metals from polluted soils. In this sense, the objective of this research is to determine if it is possible to use native plants in the recovery of precious metals from abandoned mining liabilities. The tailings samples containing Au and Ag were acquired from the northern region of Peru. Two native plant species, Stipa Ichu and Cortaderia Nitida, were used. Results show that Au was recovery around 19% (1.52 mg/Kg) and 25.43% (1.78 mg/Kg) by using Stipa Ichu and Cortadeira Nitida, respectively. Besides, Ag had a better recovery in the Stipa Ichu reaching a value of 6.83% (0.628 mg/Kg); in contrast, Cortadeira Nitida had an efficiency of 3.6% (0.814 mg/Kg). Bioaccumulation, bioconcentration and translocation factors were calculated by determining the concentration of precious metals in the roots and aerial parts of each plant. Results show that Stipa Ichu had a greater capacity of hyperaccumulated Ag compared to Au; while Cortaderia Nitida tended to have a better performance for Au. In conclusion, both plants are recommended for phytoremediation of mining liabilities.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the research of the past sixteen years on three distinct methods of probing into solid rock. The first method is to use radar of the appropriate frequency. The second method is to use sonar. The third method is of recent vintage and uses techniques of nonlinear sonar also known as parametric sonar. The first two concepts, that of radar and sonar, are common to most people. Very few have heard of nonlinear sonar. Each of the probing techniques were investigated in order to overcome deficiencies in the former technique. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. It should be emphasized that all of these techniques for probing (or seeing) into rock are used in mines, and generally speaking not from the surface. Only in very special cases, such as certain very dry parts of Egypt or Peru, or, for example, the surface of the moon, will these probing techniques work from the surface. The reason for the development of these probing techniques has been to alert miners to possible hazards ahead of mining. Such hazards may be (1) old (unknown) boreholes connected with high pressure water zones above, (2) fractures that might connect to the Gulf of Mexico above the mine, (3) water-filled fractures that threaten the safety of miners, or (4) the discovery of dry faults ahead that can disrupt the planning of future operations.

The total energy demand in the United States increased about 4 per cent annually during the 1960's 1 and is expected to increase at the same rate during this decade. Z Fuel oil growth in the 1960's was only Z per cent per year until 1968, but it increased to 8 per cent in 1969 and 11 per cent in 1970. Fuel oil demand is expected to grow at a 6 per cent rate through the 1970's. Part of this rapid increase in demand has been caused by restrictions placed on the sulfur content of fuels. High sulfur coal can no longer be burned in many parts of the country and has been replaced by low sulfur fuel oil. An insufficient supply of natural gas has also contributed to fuel oil demand. Air pollution regulations have not only caused an increase in fuel oil consumption, but they have also caused a reduction of sulfur content in residual fuel oils. Current regulations call for 1 per cent maximum sulfur content fuels over much of the country. Sulfur contents of fuels are limited to 0. 3 per cent in certain areas on the east and west coasts. Sulfur in residual fuel oils from high sulfur imported crude oil is reduced to 1 per cent currently. However, sulfur reduction to 0. 3 per cent is difficult and expensive.4 As a result, refiners may be hard pressed to supply the market for low sulfur fuel oil. The performance of seals in boreholes, shafts, and tunnels is an important concern in mine safety, in the control of effluents from operating and abandoned mines, and in the underground containment of hazardous wastes (Einarson and Abel, 1990; Mining Waste Study, 1988). Despite the clear need for effective seals, few documented test results are available concerning the performance of in-situ seals. Some evidence indicates that horizontal or near-horizontal holes are especially difficult to seal properly (Kelsall and others, 1982). This research involved the installation, extensive hydraulic testing, removal, and post-test examination of a l0-cm-long by 10-cm-diameter cement grout seal in a near-horizontal borehole in limestone. The work was performed in an underground mine on Marble peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains, Arizona. A test hole was diamond cored in the re-crystallized limestone of the Escabrosa formation. The hole is 33.24 m long, 10 cm in diameter, and dips at 10.4 degrees. The hole extends between two drifts and thus is accessible from both ends.

The Trolleyphone was the first successful application of carrier current techniques to a DC power distribution system to provide voice communication between fixed points and moving locomotives and traveling cranes, This was a significant breakthrough because this not only in itself provided a useful new tool for industry, but the knowledge gained in the transmission of voice communication is paving the way for many other things, chiefly, remote control and indication systems which promise to have a far reaching effect during the upcoming age of automation. Once it has been established that we can communicate between men who operate machines, the next step will be to operate the machines themselves.

Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 -25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the 'Ken-Flote' columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 1650 cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6 percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only 65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23 percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8 percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of 'orimulsion' in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

In late 1971, the Sun Company, then known as Sun Oil Company, acquired a large surface mineable federal coal lease with the thought that those coal measures within its boundaries would provide a future feedstock of either coal or coal liquification. Our Cordero lease was one of the last Federal coal leases let before the recent decade long leasing moratorium. Because of the tremendous demand for compliance steam coal for the electric power industry, a decision was made to develop the property to serve that market. In 1974, Sunoco Energy Development Company (SUNEDCO), the non- oil and gas energy unit of the Sun Company, began engineering studies for development of the lease. The mine was originally designed at a 12.0 million ton per year capacity. The Cordero Mining Company was formed to mine and operate the property. Construction of the facilities adjacent to the lease began in January 1975. Due to the Sierra Club versus Department of Interior Secretary L. B. Morton suit, work within the lease was delayed until mid-1976 when pre-stripping of the overburden began.

The Coal Creek Preparation Plant is the coal cleaning facility of Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company. Located three miles west of Redstone, Colorado, and at an elevation of 8,040 feet the preparation plant cleans coal produced at the company's Dutch Creek Mine and L. S. Wood Mine. (See Fig.1.) Current production is at the rate of 2500 tons per day clean coal. Plant capacity is rated 350 TPH raw coal. Reject rates vary with mining conditions from 8% to 25%. Factors which influenced the design of the coal cleaning facility were the characteristics of the coal, the location in a tourist oriented resort area, and the extreme winters of the area. Lack of areas suitable for settling ponds and the necessity of keeping effluent waters out of the fishing streams dictated a closed circuit plant. Severe winter conditions, which last six to seven months out of the year and temperatures which have dropped to 40° F. below zero on occasions demanded that the plant be totally insulated and enclosed indoors.

Rotary Percussion drilling has shown great improvement over rotary drilling, when hard roof is encountered. In addition, Rotary Percussion drills have eliminated the need for air drills in many applications. Improved drilling rates have been achieved but roof bolting is still a bottleneck in many operations and the demand for further improvement will continue. Drilling rates beyond current performance is limited by the capabilities of existing drill steels and bits to resist increased horsepower input. The most apparent immediate solution to improved drilling is to increase the strength and rigidity of the drill steels. Drilling experience indicates that a l-1/2" diameter or 1-5/8" diameter hole can be drilled as rapidly or 'more rapidly than the standard 1-3/8" diameter hole. Greater torque and thrust capacities can be achieved through the use of larger O. D. and I. D, steels, however, this is only possible if the larger hole sizes can be made allowable. Large diameter anchorage shells can be made available at a slight extra cost.

There is no such thing as an industrial minerals industry. There are, however, many industries operating in the general field of industrial minerals. And although we use the phrase "industrial minerals industry" out of sheer convenience, the only common denominator among, say, the potash mining and processing industry, the sulphur-sulphuric acid industry and the granite industry is, in fact, that they each are exploiting an industrial mineral resource. May I quote the person whom I consider to be the reigning Mr. Industrial Minerals, Robert L. Bates, who in the 4th edition, 1975, of Industrial Minerals and Rocks states: "An industry is considered to belong to the industrial minerals field if its operations consist of extraction and processing, but not manufacturing. Thus the mining and beneficiation of feldspar is a mineral industry, but the manufacture of ceramic products is not. In the cement and lime industries, processing merges into manufacture, and the line is less distinct. It disappears altogether in a plant that extracts salt as artificial brines, and makes sodium and chlorine chemicals, all under the same roof."

The present study highlights the planning and design aspects of a well-known openpit copper deposit in India. The mine has been operational since 1982 and presently reaches a depth of 168 m below the surface. The present planning effort has been given due consideration in view of the recent upsurge of copper prices in the global market. The prime focus of the study has been directed towards examining the possible extent of final pit beyond the current pit outline and generating an extraction sequence of future mining operations. To this end, an orebody model of the deposit has been developed and the optimized pit has been derived using L-G 3D algorithm. A sensitivity analysis has also been performed to scrutinize the possible effects of the changing economic scenarios on the ultimate pit configuration. It has been observed that with the current production rate, mine life can be extended another 40 years. With a five-year production plan, these materials can be extracted in eight push-back schemes. The extraction sequence of these push-backs has been outlined in this paper.

Accurate, repeatable density measurements of a coal-magnetite-water slurry are difficult to achieve using a nuclear density gauge. Changes in the coal-to-magnetite solids ratio cause fluctuations in the readings of nuclear gauges. To investigate this problem the Electric Power Research Institute's Coal Cleaning Test Facility compared the performance of a nuclear density gauge on a coal-magnetite-water slurry with the performance of a differential pressure gauge modified with a new pressure sensor. A second aim of these preliminary tests was to determine if the differential pressure gauge is also sensitive to the type of solids in the slurry. This paper explains current slurry density measurement practices, describes the nuclear and differential pressure gauges used in the CCTF tests, and presents test methods and results.

Leo-potpourri, was selected as the title to this paper for several reasons. First, it is a fascinating word--not looking like it sounds or sounding like it looks. It also allows for a great degree of flexibility in designing a presentation around it. Further, it has become popular to use this eco hyphen something pattern. We hear of eco-mania, eco-hysteria and the like. Lastly, in this era of intense environmental concern, two of the principle elements on which the integrity of our efforts must be equated are ecology and economics. Accordingly, the term "Eco-potpourris" allows me to roam at will through the great number of considerations that make up this environmental issue. Whereas only a few years ago the subject of environment and environmental control had low visibility with the public, today it competes as the focus of attention with the many other popular social issues of our time. The program content here at this meeting, for example, is liberally represented by papers dealing with one or more aspects of environmental concern. If one would look at the 1964 program, in contrast, I would expect that no more than possibly one or two papers covered this subject and even then that those papers dealt principally with the environmental aspect of occupational health. It is gratifying that the program at this meeting demonstrates a serious awareness to a broad spectrum of environmental concerns. It would be a mistake, of course, to believe that this clamor for a quality environment is a "flash in the pan" that will soon subside. The conversion of maf coal to pyridine solubles and gas was investigated in a microautoclave batch reactor for two Kentucky washed coal samples (Ky. #9 and Ky. #11). Solvent hydrogen donor strength was controlled by the tetralin content of a mixed 1-methyl naphthalene-tetralin solvent. Primary liquefaction conversions greater than 90% in 10 minutes of reaction time at 427°C were achieved in liquefaction solvents with moderate hydrogen-donor strength (circa 40% tetralin). A modified irreversible first order rate expression, containing a parameter (a) to account for the intrinsic reactives of the maf coal, described the experimental kinetic data rather well. The integrated form of this rate expression is -k1e x = a (a- ß)e (eq. 1) Parameter ß in equation (I) is the pyridine solubility of the starting maf feed coal, x is the primary liquefaction fractional number of conversion, k1 is the specific reaction velocity constant and ? is reaction time. Primary liquefaction rate was found to be quite temperature sensitive and independent of coal when a liquefaction solvent containing 40% or more tetralin was employed. Primary liquefaction rate appears to depend on liquefaction solvent hydrogen donor strength for solvents containing = 40 wt.% tetralin. The intrinsic reactives in the maf feed coal or a appear to depend mainly on the inertinite group maceral content of the coal for the two coals studied in liquefaction solvents containing 3 40wt.% tetralin. In contrast, a appears to decrease in liquefaction solvents of low donor strength., i.e; solvents with less than 40wt.% tetralin.

After almost 60 years of application in this country froth flotation is still by far the most important process for concentrating metallic ores as well as a number of nonmetallic ores including fluorspar, phosphate rock, and potash. Its use on iron ores and coal is increasing. In the metals groups the largest plants and the greatest progress are found in copper and molybdenum mills, and the section of this paper that deals with applications will be found most pertinent to that field. During its long reign the flotation process has passed through several phases of evolution and has achieved progress in economy, efficiency, and simplicity of operation. Much of today's success in the flotation of low-grade ores can be attributed to that progress. Even more important to us than our ability to cope with today's conditions are tomorrow's problems, which we can contemplate with some prescience and confidence. Our annual production of copper, lead, zinc, and molybdenum--to mention only the most important metals occurring in the U.S. as sulphides--must be held at a high level in the face of a declining grade of ore. It is probable that the tonnage of such ores mined and processed will double in this country before the turn of the century. Not only will many of the existing flotation mills be enlarged again and again, but larger mills will be built here and abroad to meet our needs. At this moment, in fact, there are at least three proposed new foreign mills or expansions that envision 100,000 tons daily milling rate on copper ores. Two pilot-scale biological reactor systems were installed to treat metal-contaminated water. The reactors consisted of barrels and tanks filled with spent mushroom compost, within which bacterial sulfate reduction became established. Concentrations of Fe, Zn, Mn, Ni, and Cd were lowered by over 95% as these metals were precipitated as insoluble sulfides by reaction with bacterially generated H2S. The chemistry of the reactor systems is examined, and opportunities for maximizing their metal-retaining and alkalinity-generating potentials are discussed.

"The construction of 6.3 km long central part of 2nd metro line in Warsaw was completed in September 2014 (7 stations - out of which three 25m deep stations - built using cut and cover method; two single-track tunnels constructed using four EPB TBMs as well as a short NATM section with soil freezing below the existing road tunnel). Central section of the 2nd metro line was opened to public after verification and testing in March 2015. Design and build tender for the extension of this line in East (three stations) and West direction (three stations) was announced with total length of running tunnels – approx. 5 km. Detailed description of a very complex geotechnical context, different construction methods, challenges encountered and solved during construction and finally lessons learnt on this interesting project are presented in the paper. DESCRITPTION OF THE PROJECT Introduction The very first concept plan of the metro system in Warsaw was designed several years after regaining independence by Poland in 1918. In 1929, following the geotechnical survey, design works begun, but the economic crisis of the 1930s stopped it. After a few years of break, in 1938 a coherent concept of the metro network was proposed to be implemented in phases over the next 35 years. In total, construction of 46 kilometers of metro, including 31 km of tunnels and 15 km on surface, was planned. Unfortunately, World War 2 made the implementation of those plans impossible. In the post-war period several metro designs were elaborated, but none except one was scheduled for implementation. Construction of the 1st, 23.1 km long, North-South line commenced in 1983 and finished in 2008 (Sieminska-Lewandowska et all. 2009). Nowadays, Warsaw covers the area of 517 km2 and, according to year 2014 statistical data, the city has much more than 1.7 million inhabitants. Only one operating metro line is not sufficient for such a populated city. Up-to-date metro plan, shown on Figure 1, includes also 30.5 km long 2nd metro line. It’s route is divided into four sections: Western Section with the length of approx. 9.2 km and 9 stations, Central Section with the length of 6.3 km and 7 stations, North-East Section with the length of 7.7 km and 6 stations, South-East Section with the length of 7.1 km and 6 stations. The construction of the central part of the 2nd metro line in Warsaw was completed in September 2014 and its operation started in March 2015. The paper focuses on challenges encountered and solved and lessons learnt during construction of the central part of the 2nd metro line in Warsaw."
