"1. THE VICTORIA STATION TRANSPORT HUB Victoria Underground station is part of the Victoria transport hub, which comprises one of London’s main train termini and a major bus station. At the Underground station, the District Line running in the older shallow brick tunnels dating back to 1868 cross the Victoria Line running in the lower tunnels, which were opened in 1969. After Waterloo, Oxford Circus and King’s Cross/St. Pancras Tube stations, Victoria is the most frequented station on the London Underground network and is used by over 80 million passengers per year. Capacity at Victoria Tube station has been inadequate for many years with passenger numbers steadily rising. Overcrowding is a constant challenge and the station has to be closed regularly during morning and evening peaks until sufficient trains pass through to clear the platforms. For this reason an extension has been debated since the 1990s. After intensive preliminary investigations and feasibility studies covering many variants, which included a large-scale jet grouting test to determine the applicability of this technology as a protective measure for the tunnelling works, the project was officially started with the Victoria Station Transport and Works Act Order (Secretary of State, 2009) effective on the 18th of September 2009. Following a competitive tender process a joint venture of Taylor Woodrow and BAM Nuttall were awarded the contract by London Underground, with their design being carried out by Mott MacDonald Ltd. Ensuring the busy station remained open to the public was a key requirement of the Victoria Station Upgrade. Jet grouting works, which were executed from ground surface, were also carried out while the station was fully operational 2. OVERVIEW The Victoria Station Upgrade aims to increase the capacity of the Underground station significantly and one of its major design objectives is to optimise the transfer between the Underground lines. In order to achieve this, the following new structures are currently under construction: •,A new North Ticket Hall •,Extension of the existing South Ticket Hall •,Nine new escalators •,Connecting tunnels between the North and the South Ticket Hall •,8 new lifts providing step free access to all platforms •,An improved connection between the rail/bus terminus and the Underground station As the elevation and geometry of the existing structures cannot be changed, the new structures need to be adapted to the existing structures (see Figure 1)."

Convergence measurement across the 17.4 m (57ft) high shaft station/loading pocket at Mt. Taylor provided continuing verification of stability and safety. Three levels of instrumentation, consisting of three lines each, were installed and monitored. The instrumentation showed that the flexible lining restrained the adjacent rock. The flexible lining consisted of pea gravel with neat cement between rock and liner plate, wooden crush blocks between liner plate and steel ring beams. The loading pocket is elliptical, 11.6 by 9.6 m (38 by 31 1/2 ft) I.D. The crush blocks were designed to allow 15 cm (6 in.) of convergence. Maximum predicted convergence was 7.0 cm (2 3/4 in.) and 5.7 cm (2 1/4 in.) was measured. Convergence measurements also demonstrated decreasing deformation with respect to elapsed time and distance from the measurement station to the temporary bottom of the shaft excavation.

It is well known that the elimination of impurities such as iron pyrite, shale, clay, silica, etc., from coal, by floatation [Sun, 1954; Aplan, 1983] and selective oil agglomeration [Keller and Burry; 1990] depends on the fact that coal is hydrophobic, and the impurities are hydrophilic. The water contact angle has long been used to evaluate the hydrophobic nature of coal, first by Brady and Gauger (1940), who demonstrated that the contact angle of water on coals increases with rank, and passes through a maximum at about 88% carbon. Brown (1962) found that the contact angle of coal decreased with increasing ash content. Sun, and also Aplan, have reported a direct relationship between values of the contact angle and rank, and have related the contact angle to coal floatability. Horsley and Smith (1951) first demonstrated that the captive bubble contact angle may be used to characterize the hydrophobicity of a coal containing more than 80% carbon DAF, while Parekh and Aplan (1978) have shown that the sessile-drop technique may be used to evaluate the hydrophobicity of coal of any rank.

Flocculation is an important step in the treatment of coal preparation waste waters. The effects of polymer charge and molecular weight and solution pH and ionic strength on the adsorption and flocculation characteristics of a series of polymeric flocculants on some typical waste water constituents have been studied experimentally. The results indicate that the nature and extent of flocculation are strongly system-dependent. For the case of coal, both adsorption and flocculation behavior can be correlated with the polymer conformation in solution. For the mineral constituents, on the other hand, adsorption and flocculation depend also on the surface properties of the solid.

The paper presents results of the mineralogical examination on samples from a bacterial leaching test which simulated in situ leaching for 482 days. Rock fragments (15 to 20 cm) were obtained from the top, the middle and the bottom of a bioleach column. Examination of the samples was carried by electron microscopy and image analysis. The surfaces of the rock fragments were studied to characterize the precipitation products, and cross-section cuts were studied to assess the advance of the bacteria leaching front and the dissolution of the different sulphide minerals.

The Alligator Ridge Mine is located 70 miles northwest of Ely in White Pine County, Nevada. Development of the mine began in the late 1970's as a joint venture between Amselco Minerals, Inc. and Occidental Minerals Corporation, with Amselco as the operating partner. Early in 1983 Nerco Minerals Company acquired Occidental's share of the property. The mine and ore processing facility have operated at capacity since 1981 producing 680,000 tonnes of ore and 1,900 kg of gold per year. The gold ore deposits at Alligator Ridge consist of disseminated micron-size gold particles in a silicified siltstone matrix. The deposit comprises three separate but adjacent areas of mineralization that are designated as Vantage 1, Vantage 2, and Vantage 3 after the name of the basin in which the deposits lie.

In the Appalachian region of the United States, approximately 40% of the underground coal reserve base exists in seams 0.7 - 1.1m thick. These seams are, in general, often of premium quality and are frequently accessible through above-drainage drift-type openings. Unfortunately, there are no apparent advantages to mining thin seams, if quality is disregarded. The thin-seam mine is faced with the same legal and economic pressures as any other underground coal mine. But in addition to these common problems, thin-seam operations must also deal with the unique problems associated with mining at such a restrictive height. Small-scale, short-lived operations appear to be the most feasible means of mining these reserves. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the production and safety potential of various thin-seam mining systems. Recommendations will be made regarding present and future thin-seam operations.

A pilot-plant investigation in a NIMCIX contactor has shown that activated carbon can extract more than 93% of the gold in return-dam solutions. The average gold concentration in the barren solution was less than 0.003 mg/L from a feed averaging 0.048 mg/L. The carbon was eluted by the Zadra procedure. The operating conditions of the elution-electrowinning circuit are reported, and the elution of the gold and other metals is discussed. The reactivation of the carbon by use of the Rintoul kiln is described, together with the results of reactivation. The consumption of reagents in the process cycle is presented in sufficient detail to allow the economic viability of this technique to he evaluated for the recovery of gold from low-grade solutions.

The Boddington gold mine is located near Perth in Western Australia in the Saddleback Greenstone Belt, a fault-bounded sliver of Archaean volcanic and shallow level intrusive rocks, surrounded by granitic and gneissic rocks. The mine began operations in 1987, producing about 7.7 t/a (250,000 oz/year) until mining ceased in 2001. Built on the footprint of the original mine, the Boddington gold mine expansion project involved opencut mining from two large pits. Expected gold production is around 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for the first five years. It will be the largest gold mine in Australia. The mine has proven and probable reserves of more than 622 kt (20 million oz) of gold and has an expected life of more than 24 years. The mine is currently solely owned by Newmont Gold Corp., the world?s second-largest gold mining company, employing around 28,000 people worldwide. The conveyor and belt feeder contract for the Boddington gold mine expansion project was awarded by Aker Kvaerner Clough Murray Roberts (AKCMR) to FLSmidth Conveyor Engineering Inc. in August 2006. The contract involved the design and manufacture of 15 conveyors and 17 belt feeders with belt widths ranging from 450 mm to 2.4 m (18 in. to 96 in.) and conveyor lengths from 16 m to 2,172 m (52 ft to 7,125 ft). The total motor power added up to more than 16,700 kW (22,400 hp). The total length of all belting was almost 11.5 km (7.1 miles), and the total fabricated steel weight was approximately 3.7 kt (4,100 st).

The Companhia Vale do Rio Doce in Brazil operates one of the most extensive systems in the world for the mining, transportation, processing, pelletizing and shipping of high grade hematite iron ore and pellets. Current shipping of unbeneficiated, sized, high grade ore from its ports at Tubarão and Vitória is now at the rate of 17,500,000 metric tons annually. An increase in this annual rate is now under study. Using the technology and facilities of Lurgi (1) and Arthur G. McKee company CVRD undertook a program to process and pelletize two types of fines - "Blue Dust" and ?Itabira Fines?. Blue Dust is a high grade fine ore which was bypassed while mining the direct shipping ores and which, also, exists as a very large ore body called the Conceição Mine. Itabira Fines is a lower grade of fine ore which is comprised of in-situ fines and, also fines which are generated in sizing the direct shipping ores for a rigid specification market.

Newmont Mining Corporation owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006. Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix needed a process option to treat lowgrade transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore was being mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a run-of-mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the synergies and challenges of developing a copper L-SX/EW plant at the Phoenix copper-gold mill.

This paper describes the development of a new method and device for determining the in-situ mechanical properties of rock masses. The method involves a self-recording mechanical deformation gauge for sensing-recording she deformation of the borehole wall when loaded hydraulically. The self-recording feature of the gauge eliminates the difficult technical problem of transmitting signals over very long cables for measurements at great depths. Adopting a mechanical gauge instead of electronic, electrical, optical or grid techniques eliminates delicate instrumentation and installation problems. Moreover, mechanical gauges are inherently rugged and suitable for use in severe borehole conditions including very high temperatures. The technique was tested in limestone, basalt and granite specimen. The calculated mechanical property values for 1 the tests agree with those obtained by conventional testing methods. The self-recording mechanical deformation gauge has a minimum reading of 50 micro inches (1.27 x 10-3mm), comparable with electrical resistance strain gauges, capable of reading deformations over a range of 0.25 inches (6.35mm). The sensitivity, ease and accuracy of the method recommends it highly for in-situ rock modulus measurements.

The Davis magnetic tube concentrator is a laboratory machine designed to separate a small sample of pulverized magnetic iron ore into magnetic and non-magnetic fractions. It was developed in 1921 by mechanization of a test previously performed manually. (1)(2)(3)(1) No significant changes have been made in the design of the apparatus since that time. The Davis magnetic tube test continues to serve as a practical basis for judging the amenability of an ore to magnetic separation and for controlling magnetic separation plant operations. The apparatus consists of an inclined cylindrical glass tube supported adjacent to closely spaced pointed poles of a powerful C-magnet. (Figure 1). To conduct a tube test, a sample of a suitably prepared ore is poured into the water-filled tube. With wash water flowing through, the tube is oscillated to gradually reject the weakly magnetic ore particles until the desired degree of separation is attained. Both the magnetic concentrate and the tailings may be recovered for examination.

INTRODUCTION Zortman Mining Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pegasus Gold Corporation of Spokane, Washington. Pegasus has been producing gold and silver from the Zortman and Landusky mines since 1979. The Zortman and Landusky mines are two distinct open pit mines located approximately 6 kilometers apart in the Little Rockies Mining District of north central Montana. The two mines use large-tonnage, low- grade heap leaching techniques to efficiently process the gold and silver ore. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Little Rockies rise abruptly 914 metres from the surrounding plains to about 1829 metres above sea level. The topography is quite steep, making efficient leach pad construction a major challenge. The climate is semi-arid with moderate summers and occasionally severe winters. Freezing temperatures usually arrive in late October or early November, influencing the effectiveness of leaching operations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY The geology of the Little Rocky Mountains consists of steeply dipping sedimentary ridges forming an elliptical dome surrounding a core of intruding syenite porphyry. Within the syenite porphyry are well fractured and mineralized shear zones where the existing reserves and open pits are located. The ore is presently divided into oxidized, mixed, and sulfide. Only the oxides and mixed zones that are of ore grade are placed on the leach pads. The syenite porphyry host rock enables effective leaching of gold and silver to depths of 61 metres, having a major impact on leach pad construction costs. MINING All mining since 1979 has been by contractor. This enabled initial mining to commence without capital investment in equipment. Through competitive negotiations, Pegasus has been able to keep contract mining costs at levels very close to what would be experienced if Pegasus had purchased equipment initially. Contracts are negotiated yearly and are based on a unit price and haul distance for ore and waste. Haul distances have ranged from as little as 457 metres to as much as 3,050 metres. At present, Pegasus is developing a 27,000,000-tonne leach pad at the Landusky project that is adjacent to the minine area. This design feature will reduce the mining cost by 20 percent over the life of the mine. In 1987, over 5,900,000 tonnes of ore and 3,200,000 tonnes of waste will be mined at the Landusky project. Through 1986, 13,763,000 tonnes of ore have been mined at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.60:l at the Zortman project, and 13,005,000 tonnes of ore at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.79:l have been mined at the Landusky project. Current mining reserves are 32,769,000 tonnes of ore at a waste- to-ore strip ratio of 0.59:l. Through efficiencies of large-scale heap leaching, Pegasus has been able to lower the mining cutoff from 0.34 grams per tonne gold to 0.27 grams per tonne gold. This has reduced the mining cost per tonne of ore h percent through a reduction in strip ratio of 14 percent. Beginning in 1984, all pits were designed based on computer-generated "floating cone" pits. The geologic models were developed by Pegasus staff with a series of economic models evaluated. The resulting computer-generated pits were used as a guideline in designing the mine plans, including haul roads for final calculation of tons and grade. Input to the floating cone models consisted of mining cost, processing cost, cutoff grade (0.34 grams gold per tonne), recovery (67 percent) and gold price. Due to the gold being deposited primarily on the fractures of the syenite host rock, no crushing of ore is needed prior to leaching. This characteristic of the ore is a key in being able to profitably mine and process gold ore at an average grade of 0.69 grams of gold per tonne. Strict blasting control is also a key in success of the leaching operation. A system of splitting ore and waste in blast patterns has been devised to reduce dilution. Development of a process for winning copper from pelletized chalcocite concentrate without matte smelting and converting is underway at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center, Bureau of Mines. The new route from concentrate to metal includes 2-stage fluid-bed treatment; pelletized concentrate (33 percent Cu, 7 percent S) is first desulfurized (to about 0.5 percent S) in an oxidizing atmosphere, and in the second stage the calcine is metallized by reduction with hydrogen. Thereafter, the reduced product plus 10 percent CaO is routed to a smelting furnace to separate metallic copper from the gangue. Recovery and the Cu content of the product at this point are in the 97-98 percent range. The metal must be refined to remove sulfur and iron to make wirebar copper. An important feature of the process is the pelletizing of the fine concentrate into mini-pellets prior to fluid-bed treatment, which has permitted shorter reaction time, decreased dusting, and facilitated subsequent processing.

This report will be given in two sections. The first sec¬tion outlines techniques and equipment to form almond shaped fluorspar briquettes by means of briquet presses, and the second section outlines techniques of the balling disc. PART I - BRIQUET PRESSES Fluorspar has been briquetted for a number of years and the so called "peach pit" briquet is known to many steelmen. Present production is estimated at over 100,000 tons annually. Slide 1 shows an assortment of various sizes and shapes of briquettes. It is possible to form fluorspar into almost any configuration of briquet. For safety on the melting floor, pillow type briquets are preferred. Ease of mechanical handling and durability of the product are facil¬itated by an almond shape. The dimensions of the almond can vary from 1-in. to 1-1/2-in. in length, from 13/16-in. to 1-in. in width and from 1/2-in. to 1-in. in thickness. The type of equipment to pro¬duce almond shaped fluorspar briquettes is shown in Slide 2. Here we have a Komarek-Greaves and Company 300 ton briquettor equipped with almond rolls. This machine is capable of producing fluorspar briquettes at a rats of 30 tons per hour with power consumption of 35 hp per ton par hour.

With the growing exportation of coal from North America to the Pacific Rim countries and Europe, has come an increasing awareness of the need to determine economically optimized amounts of incombustibles (ash and moisture contents) for the shipped product. Despite the fact that demand bas caused a steady improvement in selling price, particularly for thermal coals, growing production and transportation costs have compelled producers to keep a sharp eye open for ways and means of minimizing the latter since this probably represents the greatest single potential for making savings. Consequently the Coal Industry has become acutely aware of the economic ramifications of eliminating moisture in particular, thereby producing further saving in the cost of transportation of product from the mine to the consumer. There is, however, a lower limit to which dewatering or drying can be taken and this relates to dustiness which is a function of the characteristics of the coal and the methods used for handling and storage during trans-shipment. Overdrying can lead to serious dust losses and difficulties in handling particularly if the coal contains a large proportion of fines. The ways and means for achieving this "happy medium" of optimization in moisture removal are seemingly undergoing gradual modification largely assisted by the following factors. a) Improvement in effectiveness of coal dewatering and drying equipment. b) Improvement in operational availability and utilization of the equipment. c) The development of surfactants, polymer flocculants and other agents which in many cases can be almost tailor made to suit specific applications.

It has been said that good things come in threes. In the case of screening for mining and quarry operations, profit comes in three distinct phases: layered, basic and sharp screening. But how good they are ? whether they maximize efficiency and improve the potential for success ? depends on having the right screen media on the deck for each of the three phases. A relatively new method for achieving that goal is a blended screen media approach that incorporates the ideal screen media for each phase and the ideal mix of media for the process overall. The goal in implementing a blended solution is to find the optimal combination of open area and durability. If this combination is found, maximum product quality and profits will be realized by increasing efficiency of classification while minimizing downtime and maintenance costs.

Underground coal mines beneath Black Mountain in the Harlan County district of the Central Appalachian coalfields have an extensive history of bump events, which yields an elevated probability for significant injury or fatality to underground miners. According to Mark (2009), Harlan County has had the greatest concentration of deep-cover retreat mining in the United States. Combined with the extensive multiple seam mining history, room-and-pillar coal bumps have had a disproportionate impact on coal operations in this region. The Harlan seam, one of the principal, economically recoverable coalbeds exploited beneath Black Mountain, has a significant burst history that extends into modern times. A numerical investigation using the LaModel software of 17 bumps that occurred at the same mine in the Harlan seam was conducted and used to create a calibration methodology which serves as the quantitative basis for current and future numerical efforts in an adjacent mine exploiting the same reserve. In addition to this numerical study, a qualitative assessment of the geologic factors that are believed to contribute to the bump potential was completed. Combined with stability prediction using the numerical basis, these geologic factors will be used for recognition of high bump potential areas with the goal of reducing the potential for future bumps, helping to ensure the highest level of safety and productivity for underground personnel.
