In determining the layout or combination of unit operations to be utilized in a modem preparation plant, several factors must be taken into account. Among these are the washability data, size consist data, the particular market or markets for the coal, the mining method used, the degree to which the coal must be prepared, expected fluctuations in raw coal and markets, and the overall economics of the process. In addition, there are the health and safety aspects of coal utilization and preparation. Chapter 1 of this book discusses the characteristics of coal and coal markets, while Chapter 2 deals with the design of preparation plants. Once the unit operations for a particular plant have been decided upon, these arrangement may be depicted by using a flowsheet. A coal preparation plant flowsheet is a two-dimensional graphical representation of the sequence of operations, the arrangement of machinery, and the flow of materials for a particular coal cleaning operation. The flowsheet is usually qualitative in nature, becoming more quantitative as material balances, water balances, numbers and sizes of various pieces of equipment, etc. are added. The usual convention in preparing a flowsheet is to show the feed flowing from left to right, starting at the top left and working down as in an all-gravity process. Various symbols are used for each unit operation as depicted on a flowsheet, and Fig. 14-37 is a compilation of the commonly accepted international standard symbols for each unit operation. Fig. 14-38 through Fig. 14-40 are flowsheets of various coal cleaning processes as published in the January 1976 issue of Coal Age. Each process has its own unique features which, among others, depend upon the coal being cleaned, the coal market, and the mining operation. Fig. 14-38, for example, is a flow diagram for a jig plant preparing steam coal from two strip mines located a few miles apart. In addition to the jig washer, cyclones are used to treat the finer size coal. Fig. 14-39 is a flowsheet of a heavy media plant using a heavy media washer for + %-in. (+6.3-mm) coal, froth flotation for -28 Tyler mesh (-0.6 mm) material, and dewatering phase units (dwp) for Y, in. x 28 Tyler mesh (6.3 x 0.6-mm) cleaning of steam coal. In addition, thermal drying, centrifuge drying, and the use of vacuum disk filters and thickeners for dewatering are depicted. Fig. 14-40 is a flowsheet of a plant producing metallurgical coal. In addition to the heavy media and froth flotation circuits, a tabling circuit is also employed. These flowsheets are intended to give the reader an example of how the various unit operations for coal cleaning may be linked together. Figs. 14-41 and 14-42 illustrate the conversion of block diagrams into an IS0 prescribed set of symbols.

ISO 14000 series are voluntary international standards that address environmental management system standards, environmental auditing, environmental labeling, environmental performance evaluation, and life-cycle assessment. An environmental management system (EMS) is a facet of an organization's structure that addresses the immediate and long-term impact of a company's products, services, and processes on the environment. Many companies in the United States are taking a cautious wait-and-see approach before embracing ISO 14000. A few mining companies are reviewing the standards and using them as guidelines. The paper outlines the status, possible benefits to the mining industry, and options available to a company wanting to become involved in the ISO 14000 standards.

INTRODUCTION In 2010, Montana Tech was gifted 65 acres of land immediately west of the campus. The parcel of land included an old silver mine called the Orphan Boy Mine. The Orphan Boy and its sister, Orphan Girl, were developed about1895 and operated until 1956. In addition to the gift of land, a significant industry gift was obtained to develop a first class training facility, which we call the Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC). The UMEC has been funded primarily by industry through donations of dollars, equipment, and supplies. The UMEC is a unique hands-on, educational environment for today’s students who are being trained to find, develop and process the worlds' natural resources. The center complements courses in mining engineering, geological engineering, environmental engineering, metallurgical engineering and occupational safety and health. It also serves as a as research facility utilized by students and faculty, and other organizations interested in doing research a hard rock underground mine. LOCATION The Orphan Boy and Orphan Girl Mine are located approximately 700 feet (ft.) apart and the Orphan Girl Mine is part of the World Museum of Mining. Underground they are connected on various levels and all levels below the 100 ft. level are currently flooded. The Orphan Boy mine was 804 ft. deep and Orphan Girl was 3200 ft. deep. The surface locations of the two mines and some of the underground workings on the 100 ft. level are shown on Figure 1 (2015). CONSTRUCTION Land ownership was gifted from BP/ARCO in 2010 and planning started immediately. In June of 2011, site development for the decline to the 100 ft. Level of the Orphan Boy began with a satisfactory portal site developed (Figure 2). We hoped to be able to start driving the decline in July. However, the portal was sited approximately 125 ft. away from a natural gas line that bisected the Montana Tech campus. While outside the right of way for the line, Northwestern Energy requested that no blasting be performed near the gas line until such time as the gas line was abandoned in the fall so decline development was put on hold. The gas line was officially abandoned in January of 2012.

This paper discusses the relationship between frother types and coal flotation as a function of particle size. It has been found that each frother has a unique size fraction that it will float effectively. This fact is very important when it comes to selecting a reagent scheme that will provide maximum recovery of both coarse and fine particles. Improvements in recovery can be attained when the chemical relationships between frother type and particle size floated are understood. Data from plant evaluations using commercial and developmental frothers are presented to verify the importance of frother types versus size fraction floated.

"Speakers and attendees of the 2016 Cutting Edge Conference could not be faulted for keeping one eye on the presentations taking place at the Hyatt Regency at LAX in Los Angeles, CA on Nov. 7 and 8 and another on the results of the historic election in the United States that took place on Nov 8. While there was certainly interest in the presidential campaign, there was also a great deal of interest in Measure M on the California ballot. Measure M, which passed easily, is a half-cent sales tax increase that will fund the most ambitious transit expansion in Los Angeles County history.In the coming years, the ballot measure will transform a traffic-choked region by funding the construction of nearly a dozen new rail lines with an estimated $120 billion raised in four decades. Among the projects that could come to fruition are a twin-rail tunnels project through the Sepulveda Pass and new connections in the city.During the update on West Coast projects, Bill Hansmire summed things up with a slide asking “How much work is there on the West Coast,” and his answer was “Billions.”From Seattle, WA south to Los Angeles, there is already a lot of work for tunneling and underground construction experts, and Measure M ensures that there will be plenty of work for decades to come.Currently, The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has three rail projects underway that were funded by Measure R in 2008 — the Regional Connector, the Purple Line subway extension and the Crenshaw/LAX Line that are designed to alleviate the traffic pressure with an eye to more solutions.Measure M is the fourth sales tax increase to fund transportation in L.A. County, bringing the base sales tax rate to 9.25 percent. In some cities, which already levy their own sales tax, the rate would be higher, The Los Angeles Times reported.About 35 percent of the revenue will fund major new transit projects, such as the subway under the Sepulveda Pass, extension of the Gold Line to Claremont, extension of the Crenshaw Line to West Hollywood and acceleration of the Purple Line Subway construction along Wilshire Boulevard to finish in 2024, 10 years earlier than scheduled.About 17 percent would fund a dozen highway improvement projects, such as widening parts of I-5 in the Antelope Valley and southeastern county, adding bus lanes to the Sepulveda Pass section of the 405 freeway and adding truck-only lanes to a section of the 710 freeway."

INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company's goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company's goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. This study elucidates a new idea to predict mine fire levels by employing several machine learning techniques. A total of 120 patterns of various mine fire influencing parameters, such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and temperature, were compiled from the Adularya coal mine in Turkey. Techniques like t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) and k-means clustering were used to process the data, and support vector classification (SVC) was executed to predict various levels of the mine fire. The results revealed that the proposed model has higher credibility to predict the various levels of underground mine fires.

At the beginning of the 80-s the first diamond pipe in the East-European platform was discovered in the North of the Russian Federation on the White Sea Winter coast. During several years while studying this unique area data on kimberlites and country rocks petrophysical characteristics have been collected. Considerable experience in geophysical methods when searching and exploring diamonds was accumulated, and various methods of geophysical data interpretation were used. It has been established from the analysis of geophysical data that diamond-bearing kimberlites are located in the most ancient and the most stable block of the East-European craton.

The productivity in coal mines, measured in terns of the output per manshift depends largely on the efficiency and speed of men and materials transport between working faces and the surface. The mechanization of coal winning and material handling processes has led to a great rise in the mine productivity (1). Early applications of power in U. S. coal mines were mainly electrical. The excellent traction available with the DC motor and the ease of the distribution of the DC power have made trolley wire installations for haulage very popular. In shallow mines with very limited emissions of methane it did not constitute a major hazard but as mine depths increased and corresponding emissions of methane also increased fire and methane ignition hazards have become very serious. Conveyors have proved economic where intense mechanization of coal faces generates a large output of coal from a single face, but the fire and respirable dust hazard associated with them are no less serious. Recognizing these shortcomings, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 laid down numerous provisions for the safe use of trolley-wire haulage and conveyors (2) which generally improve safety but in some cases complicate mining operations and have decreased productivity significantly since 1969. In course of time as coal mines become deeper and hence gassier and as the emphasis on safety increases it would be inconceivable to use trolley-wire haulage under ground as already witnessed in several other countries with deep coal mines. With rising capital investments and cost of the protection against fire and respirable dust, the use of conveyors may also have to be limited to special areas, e.g. main entries. Indeed, there are only two alternatives available, namely; (1) Degasify the coal seams prior to mining and use conventional electrical power, or (2) Develop alternate sources of power which would be safer and yet efficient and cheap.

This paper attempts to provide support for my conclusion. CaCO3, as a component widely existing in natural minerals, is a common impurity. In recent years, triboelectric separation has been applied to the separation of minerals containing CaCO3. However, the CaCO3’ s tribocharging mechanism is still unclear and the charging effect of CaCO3 is not obvious. In order to study the effect of triboelectric charging of CaCO3 particles under different conditions, according to the single particle frictional collision charge-mass ratio formula derived from the condenser model, an experimental platform for particle tribocharging was built in this paper. Then, the formula of charge-to-mass ratio (Q/m) was derived based on the analysis of the particle force. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to record particle motion trajectories to calculate the Q/m of one particle by this formula. In the experiment, the airflow velocity, tribocharge material, and moving distance of the particles were varied to investigate the variation of the particle charge-mass ratio results. The results show that CaCO3 was negatively charged when tribocharging with mental. The particle’s Q/m is positively correlated with the airspeed. When the metal is triboelectrically charged with the insulator, the metal with a smaller work function leads to the insulator particle with a larger Q/m. As the moving distance of the particles increases beyond 230 mm, the particle charge ratio decreases. The particle charge-mass ratio is consistent with the trend of the charge-mass ratio deduced from the capacitance model.

Fluorapatite is an important constituent of the greater part of the basic and ultra-basic rock members of the Complex. The evidence for and role of primary magmatic processes in the development of concentric zones of dunite, pyroxenite, syenite and carbonatite and its consequent bearing on the distribution of apatite are discussed. The presence of at least two generations of each of the latter three rock types indicates the cyclical nature of magmatic activity. Pegmatitic-metasomatic phases corresponding to the major magmatic cycles resulted in emplacement of pegmatoidal assemblages. The abundance of apatite in the pegmatoid can be traced to the composition of its parent magma and its cooling history. Approximately 2.5 million tonnes of phosphate concentrate are produced annually from ores containing from 10 percent to 25 percent apatite.

The varied benthic habitats of the Pacific Ocean are comprised of different types of seafloor geology. These geologic domains generally consist of sedimented abyssal hills, high relief features such as seamounts, and polymetallic nodule fields that vary in spatial extent and abundance. Nodules represent a deep ocean habitat type, and are of economic interest owing to their metals content. Multibeam data can be used to classify seafloor geology. The wide swath of hullmounted multibeam systems used in deep water provides efficient coverage of large areas of seafloor. Our research examines how multibeam backscatter and bathymetry data, with regional environmental parameter assessments and GIS analysis, can help identify probable polymetallic nodule fields in the deep remote ocean prior to groundtruth seafloor observations. A workflow for processing 30 kHz hull-mounted multibeam data within QPS Qimera and FMGT software was developed to facilitate multibeam processing, while also generating a terrain model and backscatter products. An additional GIS protocol for evaluating multibeam data products, including cluster analysis, was also developed. These methods were applied to a test case of publicly available multibeam data collected by the Ocean Exploration Trust and NOAA. Processed multibeam products were used to identify areas exhibiting coarse sediment backscatter characterization with low relief; filters for water depth at or below the regional CCD, seafloor age, and sedimentation rate were then applied. Sophisticated GIS cluster analysis further identified trends within the data to forecast where coarse sediment domains, potentially including nodule occurrences, exist. The test case multibeam data allow determination of the composition and variability of seafloor geology. This analysis can further identify where previously unexplored nodule fields may exist and edify estimates of nodule extent throughout the ocean. The research methods and outcomes contribute to marine spatial planning, ecosystems modelling, and mineral resource management initiatives.

In 1968, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded S.S. Mullen Construction of Seattle, the Intake Tunnel (488 m by 4 m diameter tunnel) and Pumping Plant No. 1. In1998, the Southern Nevada Water Authority awarded Lake Mead Constructors (Kiewit of Omaha) a parallel New Intake Tunnel (518 m long by 4.6 m diameter tunnel) and Pumping Plant. Both projects provide water to a thirsty Las Vegas. This paper presents a detailed comparison of the two intake tunnels in terms of grout takes and pressures, geologic mapping and rock quality, grout penetration beyond the excavation line, degree of fracture grouting, and groundwater inflow boundary considerations. The paper provides a comparison of grouting techniques and material developments then and now.

A practical application of recent design concepts makes it possible to design a column cell to fit a specific set of conditions. The design and operating parameters Of a column cell installation that replaced a conventional two stage copper flotation cleaning circuit at MAGMA COPPER COMPANY, SAN MANUEL, ARIZONA using these design concepts is described. A survey of other mineral processors using column cell technology was conducted. The results of this survey will also be discussed.

Earlier publications from The University of Alabama have indicated that column flotation performance is improved when operating at low pulp levels and when the feed is directed into the froth phase. To validate these early observations a series of tests were performed in which the position of the feed entry to the column and the pulp-froth interface were systematically varied. The optimum grade-recovery relationship was achieved with high feed entry (WA) of column height) and very low pulp levels (<10% of column height). The position of the pulp-froth interface appears to be the more critical variable. When operating in this mode (1. e. at low pulp levels) column flotation becomes. in reality. a froth separation process.

The segregation process has been known for many years and applied industrially for the treatment of various refractory copper ores. The principles of the process are briefly reviewed; the process was tested in the laboratory on two copper-cobalt oxide ores from Gecamines, Shaba Province, Zaire. Various parameters of the process, such as segregation temperature, dosage of reducing and chloridizing agents and flotation conditions were inyestigated. Experimental results have shown that the segregation of copper could proceed satisfactorily at low temperature (1000° K) but that of cobalt required higher temperature and higher additions of reducing and chloridizing agents.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) remains a health concern in many underground metal/nonmetal mines, and has been regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002. While the NIOSH 5040 standard method for DPM monitoring is required to demonstrate regulatory compliance, the FLIR Airtec DPM Monitor can serve as complementary engineering tool. It is a handheld instrument that offers near real-time measurements. As part of an ongoing field study, the Airtec has been used to survey elemental carbon concentrations (a proxy for DPM) in an underground stone mine. Via “spot-checking” and more prolonged area monitoring, this effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variation in several key locations. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It is largely made up of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC, respectively), which can be measured as proxies for estimating mass concentrations of DPM. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers DPM to be a health hazard and potential carcinogen [1]. It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition, and retention in lung tissue [2]. Since DPM exists in both the micro- and nano-particulate ranges, it can surpass typical auto-immuno defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system [2]. Relative to other occupations, the DPM exposure potential for underground miners is high because these individuals work in enclosed environments where diesel powered equipment is frequently used [3,4]. A variety of engineering and administrative controls have been devised to reduce DPM exposures in underground mines, and increased airflow is often a key component of control strategies. In large-opening mines, which are most common in the metal/nonmetal sector, DPM abatement via increased ventilation can be especially complex due to moving and controlling the large air quantities [5]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has regulated DPM exposure in metal/nonmetal mines since 2002. The final rule limits personal exposure to total carbon (TC, which is the sum of EC and OC) to an eight-hour time weighted average (TWA) of 160 µg/m3. To demonstrate compliance, operators must use the NIOSH 5040 Method [6]. However, the Airtec DPM Monitor (FLIR Systems, Inc., Nashua, NH) was developed as an engineering tool to provide near real-time measurements of both EC and TC for tracking personal exposures [7]. The portable Airtec works by capturing DPM on a filter and successively measuring laser extinction on the filter as DPM accumulates; the EC fraction of the DPM is dark, and so as it accumulates the filter becomes darker and absorbs more laser light [8]. The laser extinction value is directly correlated to EC, but since EC and TC are generally observed in consistent proportions (i.e., TC = EC*1.3), the Airtec is also programmed to display TC as a TWA [9]. There have been multiple studies conducted to validate the Airtec and the instrument has been adopted by some mine operators as a tool for their health and safety programs [3,8]."

The A. P. Green Refractories Co. operates clay mines in ten states. Eight of these states have reclamation laws with which we have to comply and indications are that the U. S. Congress will pass a federal surface mining reclamation act in the near future. These regulations, in addition to the value of land in most areas, dictate that mining and reclamation be considered as a single operation. In many instances the land may be more valuable after properly planned mining and reclamation than before. Refractory clay, commonly called "fire clay" is defined as a siliceous clay rich in hydrous aluminum silicates, capable of withstanding high temperatures. It is deficient in iron, calcium, and alkalies and approaches kaolin on composition. Refractory clay is much more limited in occurrence and usage than common clay or shale. During 1971, common clays and shales were mined in 47 states with a total production of 45 million tons. Fire clay production was reported in 22 states with a total production of only slightly over 3 million tons.(1) Many of these producing areas are extremely limited in extent and production. Several are contained within a one or two county area. This reflects the unique geological conditions required for the formation or development of fire clay. The major fire clay producing areas in the United States are shown in Figure 1.

Low cost, greater operating flexibility, and relatively simple operation are just three of the reasons for using minicomputers in the mining industry. No less than a dozen US manufacturers have sold the new generation of minicomputers to mining operations in the US and the world. Many manufacturers produce several models of minicomputers, each with excellent calculating capabilities. Prices for these "mini-giants" range from about $10,000 for a basic system to over $300,000 for a very powerful, sophisticated system with numerous peripheral devices. While the acceptance of minicomputers by the mining sector has lagged behind their penetration into other businesses, mines with minicomputer capability-especially remote mine sites-have found applications in practically all areas of operations including standard payroll processing, mineral deposit modeling and planning, surveying/mapping, production reporting, and daily production scheduling. In fact, the only limit to the further application of minicomputers in mining is the user&apos;s imagination. There are some obstacles to the accelerated use of minicomputers in the mining sector: the limited amount of software available, limited information on site-specific uses, and limited interest in the mining market by manufacturers. The latter is especially significant in light of the fact that many manufacturers queried in a recent telephone survey did not compile statistics on locations of their units in mining. The general consensus is that mining sales represent less than 1% of the total market. Many manufacturers do believe that market dynamics will increase their future research and development for the mining industry. The minicomputer was introduced in 1968, when Digital Equipment Corp. of Maynard, MA, developed a small computing device-the PDP-8 minicomputer. It is important to note that since then, it has become increasingly difficult to precisely define a minicomputer (see box, page 1582). The mini has evolved to surpass the capabilities of many of the large computers (mainframes) of 1968, and some models rival the mainframes of today.
