The depth capability of engineering seismographs has been greatly increased by the use of signal enhancement, a technique in which seismic waveforms created by repeated impacts are digitized, stored, and summed. Summation amplifies the signal and partially cancels background noise. This gives a clearer picture of the wave aid makes it possible to determine the travel tune of signals from 'eater depth. Signal enhancement combined with continuous display of waveform, permanent recording of waveform, and precision digital readout of travel time has opened new fields of application in mining and engineering. Recent work has clown that replacement sulfides can be distinguished seismically from country rock at Bistee, Ariz. Work on the Iron Range of Minnesota indication,: that, by using a 300 pound weight as the source, the Biwabik iron Formation can be traced down dip to several hundreds of feet traverses over known areas show that reflections can sometimes be identified. Reflection, if identified preclsely, give a mere accurate estimate of depth and buried topography. The abstract discusses the importance of predicting the dewatering performance of industrial hydrocyclones from laboratory models. It highlights the challenge of scaling up design and operating parameters for efficiency estimation. The paper describes experiments with a 2-inch and 4-inch hydrocyclone using silica sand. It details the development of a model using the Nageswararao hydrocyclone model and a simulator to estimate model parameters. The model is validated with experimental data, and a new model is developed using 4-inch hydrocyclone data. The technique is then extended to predict dimensions for a full-scale dewatering cyclone operating at higher throughput and solid concentration.

Gentlemen, the title of my paper is Surface Mining An Interim Land Use. Surface mining has become one of the major controversies of our time. This has happened in spite of the fact that all surface mining to date has involved only 6 million acres out of a total of 2300 million or approximately one-fourth of one percent of the total land area in the United States. I'm not going to dwell on whether peoples' perspectives are out of focus in light of the area involved, the energy crisis, national security, or the international balance of payments problem. While these things are all critically important, it is not the function of this paper to relate to them. Maybe the amount of attention attracted to surface mining is out of proportion to a lot of other things, but I don't feel that we should use that as a basis for procrastination. However, let me categorically state that anything that affects the surface of the earth is a form of land use --- be it an interstate highway, a power plant site, a golf course, a corn field, a strip mine, or the plot of ground on which your house is located.

An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 assays and to conceptualizing geologic models. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.

Gold was first discovered in Alabama in 1830. Before a decade had passed more than 20,000 people were employed in the various gold districts scattered across east-central Alabama. By 1849 most of the presently defined gold districts were known with such towns as Arbacoochee, Chulafinnee, Goldville, Pinetucky, and Idaho being the principal mining camps. The California gold rush of 1849 signaled the end of intensive prospecting in the Alabama Piedmont for the precious metal. Reactivation of many of the old gold districts has been attempted several times since 1849. Significant activity and development took place between 1874 and 1880, 1888 and 1916, and 1929 and 1936. Locally, some of the development met with moderate succes. The last productive gold mine in Alabama ceased production in 1935. The sharp increase in gold prices since 1973 has caused renewed interest in the potential values of gold of the Alabama gold districts. Most of the gold workings have been abandoned for nearly 75 years and are for the most part inaccessible for convential property evaluation. The early gold miners and prospectors in Alabama were more intent upon finding and mining the valuable metal than in recording their activities for future generations. No matter how interesting or historically significant these records might have been the miners kept no records and left behind them few maps as clues to their activities. Inasmuch as most of the old gold districts have been extensively mined and prospected during the past 150 years, there is very little chance of finding large deposits through conventional outcrop prospecting methods. Similarly, the present geologic knowledge of the various districts is insufficient to launch successful exploration programs looking for large blind lode deposits in new locations within the general gold bearing region.

White Pine Copper Company built and operated, from August, 1962 through May, 1963, a pilot plant to recover copper using a cyanide percolation leach of the sand fraction (+400 mesh) of the mill tailings (1, 2, 3). The pilot plant runs were metallurgically successful and preliminary engineering studies for a full scale operation were completed under contract by an outside engineering firm. Unfortunately, the net return projected at that time did not justify the proposed capital' investment. In the summer of 1973 the project was revived. The rise in selling price of copper over the previous ten years, compared to the projected operating cost of the leach plant, increased the calculated net return on investment with the most recent figures showing a 30% DCF. Basically, the reason for this favorable shift in profitability was that the cost for many of the reagents did not go up as fast in the previous ten years as did the selling price of copper. Using the Chemical Marketing Reporter costs, NaCN sold for 18.3¢/lb in 1963 and 20.75¢/lb in August, 1973. During this same period H2S04 went from $23.50 per ton to $35.90 per ton. In comparison, producer's prices for electrolytic copper were 31¢/lb in 1963 and 619 in 1973. Thus the price of copper went up 97% while the two reagents only increased 13% and 53%, respectively. The capital investment also escalated but, again, not to the same extent as the selling price of copper. These price differences no longer are valid' but they did provide justification for reexamining the project.

Leaders from the U.S. government and the global mining industry opened the MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference & Expo with a keynote session centered on restoring U.S. critical mineral production and strengthening domestic supply chains. The session, titled “Regaining America’s Mineral Dominance,” featured remarks from Ned Mamula, director at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox and Vicky Peacey, president and general manager of Resolution Copper, along with opening comments from industry leaders and conference organizers. The speakers emphasized that renewed government attention to critical minerals, combined with industry investment and technological innovation, will be necessary to meet rising demand for materials such as copper, zinc and rare earth elements. The session opened with remarks from Pat Risner, president of South32 Hermosa, followed by a safety share from 2025 SME President Bill Hancock. Hancock then introduced moderator Debra Struhsacker, who emphasized the importance of strengthening domestic mineral production and reducing reliance on foreign supply chains. Struhsacker, who is SME’s government and public affairs consultant, noted that decades of policy decisions have weakened the U.S. mining sector, leaving the country increasingly dependent on imported minerals. She pointed to declining domestic capacity, a shrinking number of mining schools and the closure of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1996 as factors that contributed to the current supply challenge.

The studies conducted by Laplante and coworkers (1983,1984) with flotation of galena and quartz, showed that the rate of flotation reaches a maximum value for a certain intermediate value of the air flow rate. A similar, though less pronounced, effect of the air flow rate on the selectivity was also observed. Luttrell and coworkers (1985) showed that the size of air bubbles has a significant effect on both rate and selectivity of coal flotation. These two studies used flotation tests in which no froth layer was formed. This note describes effects of the air flow rate and bubble size on the rate constant and selectivity of coal flotation, using a mechanical laboratory machine with a froth layer allowed to form. Experimental A raw, dry ground Illinois coal was used in flotation tests. Tap water with a natural pH of 7.0 to 7.8 was used throughout the tests. No other reagents were used. The starting concentration of coal in the pulp was 86 g/L. A standard flotation machine with the pulp volume of 5 L was used in experiments. Three different air flow rates were employed, resulting in three air escape velocity values of 14, 30, and 70 cm/min. The air escape velocity (AEV) was calculated as the ratio of air flow rate (Qa) to the slurry surface (Ss) in the machine. For a comparison, the upper limit of air escape velocity values used in commercial size flotation machines is between 70 and 100 cm/min (WEMCO, 1983). A machine consisting of a generator of fine bubbles and a separatory column, described elsewhere (Szatkowski and Freyberger, 1985), was used for some tests where bubble size lower than that generated in the standard machines was required. Prior to a flotation test, a batch of coal was mixed with water in the flotation cell for at least 10 minutes to ensure that all coal was thoroughly wet. Then the specified amount of fuel oil was added and the pulp was conditioned for five minutes. The specified amount of MIBC was added 15 seconds before the end of conditioning. After air flow was opened, flotation products were collected for 0 to 30, 30 to 60, and 60 to 120 second intervals. Content of the combustible material in samples was determined by subtracting the ash content from 100%. A photographic technique was used to determine initial distributions of bubble size generated by the flotation machines. Bubbles generated in water containing the prescribed amount of the frother but no solids were photographed against a black background. The average diameter and standard deviation were then calculated for each set of flotation conditions. The method gives results reproducible within k 5% of the average bubble size. Table 1 contains information about the measured bubble size distributions expressed by the average bubble diameter (Db) and the standard deviation ( SD ) . In open-pit mining, blasting pattern design is performed to achieve a desired degree of fragmentation for loading, hauling, and crushing operations. Inappropriate fragmentation of rock will result in numerous problems such as incurring extra costs for secondary blasting, production interruption, etc. Wetness of the blast holes is one of the most important factors, which can cause the inappropriate rock fragmentation. Lowering ambient temperature in the vicinity of the explosion, the presence of water in the hole adversely affects the quality of the explosive while dissipating part of the explosion energy, ending up with inappropriate fragmentation problems. In the present research, in order to study blast-induced fragmentation conditions in Baba-Ali Iron Ore Mine, three scenarios were considered: explosion of ammonium nitrate with fuel oil (ANFO) in dry hole, explosion of ANFO in wet hole, and explosion of the emulsion in wet hole. For this purpose LS-DYNA, a numerical simulation code was used. Results of the present research showed that, compared to the explosion of ANFO in wet hole, the explosion of the emulsion produced more uniform distribution of fragment size, while the explosion of ANFO in dry hole resulted in fewer large fragments.

The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [ ] to equivalent confinedaquifer drawdowns [ ]:

6, 7.3 meter diameter autogenous mills at Wabush Mines are undergoing conversion from a radial configuration of pulp discharger to a curved design. Improved discharging efficiency has effectively lowered the pulp level in the mill. The low level operation enhances the grinding efficiency netting a 12% power reduction. Significant reductions to rate of wear has been a spin off benefit. The design incorporates features for holding the assembly solidly in place thus eliminating bolt hole damage and leakers. Preliminary work in one 11 meter mill at Hibbing Taconite did not indicate that all the same advantages were available in their process.

Risk can generally be defined as the possibility or chance of a loss corresponding to uncertainty. Analysis is the process for examining the components and relationships of a complex system in order to determine the impacts of its variables. Risk analysis is therefore a course of action taken to analyze multiple variables of a system that is subject to speculative outcome. When risk analysis is applied to mine development, it becomes the means for assessing and measuring those parameters that contribute to economic viability. Mining can be a risky business. It is composed of an assortment of factors that contribute to its financial outcome. Of these factors, the most consequential output is the net present value (NPV). Applying risk analysis in mine development can identify those factors having the most significant impacts and applying limits to those impacts. Mathematical computer modeling using Monte Carlo techniques is available and can be customized to suit specific mine development ventures. Essentially, those parameters that are not fixed values can have input variability. Rationally deduced engineering estimates should be the basis for determining the initial values applied as inputs in the models. Risk analysis therefore provides the user a means to identify, rationalize and assess the risks in mine development in an informed, calculated, and unbiased format for making economic decisions.

The US Bureau of Mines is cooperating with Cyprus Mineral Park Mining Co., Columbia University, and the US Geological Survey in investigating the feasibility of applying in situ leach mining methods to fracture-hosted, supergene copper sulfide (chalcocite) ores. This paper presents the initial findings of mineralogical, hydrogeological, and geochemical characterization studies conducted at the Mineral Park mine, located in the Wallapai mining district of northern Arizona. A design for in situ leaching is proposed that would minimize the need for blasting prior to leaching, and would enable economical development of deep reserves at the Mineral Park mine. The in situ leaching design would also reduce the potential for long term acid rock drainage.

The aim of this paper is to assess the effect of microwave treatment on copper sulfide ore for ball milling and bed breakage. Liberation analysis of ground products in eight size fractions showed that microwave pretreatment liberated more chalcopyrite particles from the bed breakage product than the ball mill product. In bed breakage, microwave pretreatment caused a 2% increase in chalcopyrite liberation on average. Microwave pretreatment produces more elongated particles in ball milling and more rounded particles in bed breakage, respectively. Microwave pretreatment produces coarser chalcopyrite particles with a wide range of sizes. This effect is more significant in bed breakage compared with ball milling. Micro-flotation test results showed that in ball milling, treated and untreated materials have similar metallurgical performance and there is a little difference (1%) between the average Cu recovery values. However, in bed breakage, the average recovery for the treated materials is about 5% higher than the untreated materials.

he power generation industry may be required to reduce carbon dioxide (C02) emissions if regulations related to global climate change are enacted. Coal-fired generation emits more than 80% of the power sector CO2 and would be a likely target for CO2 reductions. Compliance with the Kyoto Protocol will require a 33% reduction from the projected year 2012 emission level, even with moderate load growth. This article describes an analysis of power industry CO2 reduction options and their costs. It assesses how a generator would make compliance decisions under a mandatory CO2 emissions reduction program. Carbon sequestration, fuel switching and new plant construction are considered. The Global Climate Change Treaty signed at the Rio de Janiero Earth Summit in June 1992 set the long-term goal of stabilizing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The December 1997 Kyoto Protocol established short-term mandatory targets for the United States and 37 other developed countries. The United States' target is a 7% decrease by 2012 from the 1990 "greenhouse gas" level. Developing countries are exempted from reductions, according to the Kyoto Protocol, despite projections that indicate a significant increase in their emission levels. The Kyoto Protocol must be ratified by the US Senate. US power industry carbon emissions were 490 Mt (540 million st) in 1990 and are projected to be 680 Mt (749 million st) in 2012, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Coal-fired generation emits more than 80% of the power sector CO2. Assuming that the power industry is only required to reduce emissions by a proportional share, a 33% emission reduction, or 225 Mt (248 million st) of carbon, would be required to comply with

The United States on a daily basis no consumes about 15MM barrels (2.38 x 106m3) of oil; 5MM (0.79 x 106 m3) of this is imported. This compares tai a daily consumption of 18MM (2.86 x 106 m3) in 1980 when we imported 8MM (1.27 x 106 m3). We are producing the 10MM barrels (1.59 x 106 m3 ) of conventional oil at home from what amounts to just 2% of our domestic energy reserves. Nearly 90% of our total domestic energy reserves occurs in solid forms such as coal, oil shale, and tar sands; this is more than enough to meet our needs for the next 100 years. Worldwide, oil shale is second only to coal as a potential source of energy and the U.S. has approximately one-half of the world oil shale reserves which average over 25 gallons per ton (10.43 x 10-2 L/kg). Since the United States has immense oil shale resources, including some of the richest in the world, and since oil shale produces a superior transportation fuel, it would seem logical that the U.S. would be prudently developing this domestic resource. Unfortunately, despite over 50 years of research and a number of false starts, there is not a commercial shale oil industry in place today. There are a number of recurring roadblocks which have hindered private industry's efforts to develop oil shale and we will look at some of these.

Water is the mainstay for beneficiation of fine size coal and minerals; however, it is also the least desirable constituent in the final product. The basic concept of the novel process described in this paper is based on the differential surface heat conduction/ absorption capacity of individual particles, which differs for different species of minerals. When a mixture of fine material is exposed to a radiant energy source, the various solids present in the mixture will absorb heat energy depending on their heat-conducting properties and there will be a difference in the surface temperature of the particles. When this differentially heated solid mixture is placed on a moving belt, which is coated with a low temperature melting resin, the hotter component of the mixture will stick to the belt and relatively cooler particles will stay free on the belt and fall off at the end of the belt run. Experiments were conducted with pyrite, coal, and quartz of 6 × 18 mesh particle size. The goal of the test program was to find the optimum conditions at which there exists a required temperature difference between minerals and coal particles by controlling the operating system variables. Preliminary tests results showed that there is a potential for separating mineral matter from coal using the thermo-adhesive separation technique.

This paper is based on two recently (2002) published reports: - "Breaking New Ground". Final report on the Mining, Minerals, and Sustainable Development Project (MMSD). - "2002 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines". Published by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The GRI guidelines can be applied in all kinds of industries and other organizations, whereas the MMSD project report is sector specific. However, both reports center on the three pillars of sustainability. The performance indicators as they are presented in the GRI guidelines have been assessed and compared with the sector specific arguments in the MMSD report. Based on this evaluation, the paper points at some indicators that may be useful in the start-up phase of sustainability reporting, seen from the perspective of the aggregate industry in an industrialized North European country with increasing environmental awareness and pressure on natural resources.

Soda ash production in the United States during 1994 increased 4%, reaching 9.3 Mt (10.2 million st). That was the second highest production year. Domestic nameplate soda ash capacity is about 11 Mt (12 million st). Overall, the industry operated at about 85% of capacity. Some companies produced at 100% of capacity while others produced at below their design ratings. Although domestic soda ash consumption was slow during the first half of the year, third- and fourth-quarter sales increased, especially in the flat¬glass and fiberglass sectors. These two sectors increased because of greater demand for glass products in the automotive and construction industries. Soda ash sold for pulp caustic soda increased during 1994. This was due to higher prices for and reduced availability of electrolytic caustic soda. It is often preferred for pulp digestion because of its stronger alkalinity.

ICMM’s vision is ‘a viable mining, minerals and metals industry that is widely recognised as essential for modern living and a key contributor to sustainable development’. The ICMM Sustainable Development Framework provides the basis for achieving this vision by assisting the industry to improve its performance. Two years on from the first SDIMI conference, significant progress has been made in further developing and implementing the Framework. To fulfill their commitment to implement and report performance against the ten sustainable development principles in the Framework, ICMM’s corporate members have committed to report ‘in accordance’ with the GRI 2002 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and the Mining and Metals Sector Supplement, developed by the GRI and ICMM. While much remains to be done, development of the Supplement and the commitment to reporting mark an important milestone for ICMM and the sector.
