INTRODUCTION The sublevel stoping mining method is usually applied to a relatively steeply dipping, competent ore body, surrounded by competent wall rock. Ore is produced by drilling and blasting longholes, which can range from 50 mm (2 in.) to 200 mm (7% in.) diam, with lengths up to 90 m (300 ft). Longholes can be inclined in any direction, but the ring or pattern usually forms a plane, and the holes are blasted as a unit. Recently developed mobile drilling and loading machinery, as well as new explosives products, blasting techniques, and cemented sand and rock fill have made sublevel stoping a highly efficient and versatile mining method. When designing a sublevel stoping production sys- tem, it should be kept in mind that production rates from conventional sublevel stopes vary widely through- out the life of the stope. Early production is at a low rate, coming only from the drawpoints near the slot, but increases as new drawpoints are reached by the stope face. As the stope nears completion, again, fewer drawpoints are productive. Enough drawpoints must be available at any time to provide required production. Drawpoint availability should be compared to equipment availability; plan for more drawpoints than are needed at any one time. Accurate, realistic scheduling is essential to smooth production rates. Also, initial recovery of ore in a stope/pillar block is normally from 35% to 50% in sublevel stoping. Planning of pillar recovery, representing the majority of ore tonnage in a production block, must be done during early mine planning. Since much of the development already done for primary stoping (access for drilling, drawpoints, and haulageways), can be used for pillar recovery, early production from pillars is highly desirable. The following description of components of the system is an attempt to highlight some of the most important features and requirements of mechanized sublevel stoping methods. Similar comments would apply to the use of older equipment (column-and-arm drill setups, slushers, etc.) in similar methods. As in any good mining system, maximum economic recovery of the resource in the ground is the primary consideration. STOPE DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS Length and Width The following are some of the factors which affect sublevel open stope length and width dimensions: ore body geometry, principal stress directions, competence of stope back, optimum drill pattern, and drilling drift layout. In new mines initial stope layout design may occur before the ore body is actually intersected by mine workings. Stope dimensioning is a critical decision, and assistance from as many knowledgeable people as possible at this stage is essential. Operators with past experience in similar ore bodies, rock mechanics experts, and others with mine design experience should participate at this stage of stope planning. Height The following are some of the factors which must be considered in determining stope height: competence of stope pillar and stope/fill walls; slenderness ratio of adjacent pillars; ore body dip; ore body thickness; hole depth capability of the drilling machine; fragmentation characteristics of the ore; and level intervals in existing mines. In competent ground, drill-hole length and accuracy are the most important determinants of stoping height. Frequently entire drilling sublevels can be eliminated because of the depth capability of sophisticated drilling equipment, resulting in significant development cost savings. Drawpoint Location and Design Some of the most important considerations of a good drawpoint system are optimum spacing of draw- points, within the constraints of stope dimensions, for uniform drawdown and maximum recovery; excavations designed for stability for the life of the ore block to be drawn-primary stope ore as well as subsequent pillar ore; floor or roadway design including type of surface, reinforcing, grade for water runoff; orientation with respect to the main haulageway, for optimum loader maneuverability and ground stability at the inter- section; and length, to allow articulated front-end loaders to work in a straight configuration. Careful drawpoint design and construction are keys to successful production. Extra care in development, such as smooth wall blasting, rockbolts or grouted rebar, wire mesh, and shotcrete usually will ensure long draw- point life. Human exposure during production loading is of longer duration than during development or production drilling, and consequently preparation of draw- points is easily justified, particularly when pillar ore can be drawn through the same drawpoints. Secondary blasting of boulders can weaken drawpoints, also justifying good ground control techniques. A smooth draw- point floor of poured, reinforced concrete, on a grade of +3% or +4% toward the ore pile facilitates water flow out of the drawpoint, and ease of loader bucket penetration into the muck pile. Slot Raising, Slotting A slot or other space for rock expansion is necessary in conventional sublevel stoping where vertical rings or rows of holes are blasted. The slot can be started at a slot raise driven by conventional raising methods, raise boring, drop raising (predrilling and blasting a raise from the top, using small diameter-less than 200-mm (7%-in.)-holes for relief), or crater blasting (similar to drop raising, but without relief holes). Inco Limited operates 11 underground mines in the Sudbury District. The mines are located on the rim of the Sudbury Basin, an oval with the axis in the range of 27 and 60 km. The ore dips to at least 3000 m below surface. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 55,000 tons per day. Over 40 surface fans have been installed since the late 1960's. All of the fans are adjustable pitch, axial flow units. A major factor influencing ventilation design in the last 30 years has been the introduction of diesel equipment underground. Volumes per fan have ranged from 60 to 330 (cubic metres per second), with motors from 100 to 2500 hp. Fans of the axial flow type have been in common use for main fan installations at Canadian mines for many years. The standard arrangement has been to mount these fans horizontally, i.e. with the fan shaft and the long axis of the housing horizontal. This is a natural arrangement for an underground fan, but for a surface installation, a vertically mounted fan has definite advantages. The surface area taken up by a typical vertical fan installation is generally about one quarter of that with a horizontal fan of the same capacity. (1) This is not a problem with isolated fans and flat surface outcrop sites, but where the installation is to be near existing buildings, or where there are poor surface soil conditions, space and cost considerations greatly favour vertical fans. MAIN FANS INSTALLED There are 43 main surface fans in operation at 11 mines. Twenty-seven of these fans are supply units, and 75% of them are vertical installation. The remaining 16 units are main surface exhaust fans, with predominantly horizontal installation. Within the last five years, some 20 main booster fans have been installed underground at several mines. Axial flow fans, with adjustable pitch blades, are used for both surface and underground installations. Exhaust fans are equipped with stainless steel or cast aluminum blades. Main underground fans are arranged horizontally and the majority of them have a floating shaft between the fan shaft and the motor. (2) The size of the fans in service varies from 1.8 m to 5 m in diameter, with the majority ranging from 1.8 to 2.5 m. The pressure produced by these fans varies from 0.25 kPa to 2.0 kPa. At Inco Limited, two main fans in parallel are preferred, rather than a single fan, so that if one fan fails, the remaining fan can still supply up to 70% of normal air quantities, while the damaged fan is repaired. This requires closure doors on each of the fans so the fan can be isolated in case of failure. It is more expensive than a single fan, but results in less production interruptions. The fan installations are well away from sharp inlet and outlet bends. FAN DESIGN INTEGRITY Both the mine operator and the fan manufacturer must understand that the main fan is critical to the mine operation, and that everything technically possible must be done in design and manufacture to ensure the highest degree of reliability. Some of the design parameters and criteria, based on Inco experience, are outlined and discussed below. RESONANT FREQUENCIES AND HOUSING MODEL ANALYSIS Any fan assembly will have many different resonant frequencies. It is a challenge to the designer to arrive at a design in which forcing frequencies do not coincide with any of these resonant frequencies to produce unacceptable vibration levels in operation. Finite element analysis is a useful tool that can be used to identify the most critical of these, so that housing and blade stiffness can be adjusted to change any resonances that might be close to forcing frequencies. Shaft critical speeds should be at least 25% above the fan operating speed, and there should be sufficient separation between other resonant and forcing frequencies to avoid excitation that might result in high vibration levels. QUALITY ASSURANCE Radiographic Blade Examination Mine fan blades are normally cast in small lots. To ensure that the castings are sound, a full radiographic examination is recommended in the highly stressed lower 1/3 of the blade.

Surface mining regulations together with mine and reclamation planning require collection of large amounts of geologic and hydrologic data for both new and existing mines. Recently developed microcomputer software facilitates the integration of this information from computer databases into ground-water flow models. The databases are used to identify areas which require dewatering and/or depressurizing and for generating contour maps of aquifer parameters. Gridded versions of these contour maps are incorporated into finite difference ground-water flow models which are used to design dewatering and depressurizing well fields and to estimate the effects of ground-water pumping and pit progression on local ground-water levels.

This paper describes a new development in the cyanidation of gold ores, which we expect will result in a major improvement in the way many gold ores are treated. The process has evolved through work at Hazen Research, Inc. for Kamyr, Inc. and in brief, the consists of utilizing oxygen rather than air in the carbon-in-1 each (CIL) process. We refer to this improved process for all ores amenable to cyanide leaching as carbon-in-1each with oxygen or CILO.

This paper describes the use of rock index property testing to obtain rock properties that a.re useful in the design and construction planning of an underground development for civil engineering or mining projects. The index properties discussed include (1) point load; (2) Schmidt hammer hardness; (3) abrasion hardness; and (4) total hardness. The first two index properties correlate to uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus. Discussions are given on the relationship to rock mass properties and the integrated use with semi-empirical, geotechnical design methods. The latter two properties correlate to construction performance parameters and some experience is cited. Examples of data are presented from an index testing program carried out on siltstone, sandstone and limestone rock core samples from a deep borehole drilled in the Paradox Basin of Utah for a nuclear waste repository site investigation.

Although roof falls account for approximately half of the fatalities in underground coal mining, the factors that produce them are not clear. Mining methods can account for some, but in others the controlling factors are the geological setting in which the mining takes place. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the kinds of rocks that were most likely to produce roof problems. Such knowledge would be helpful to mine planning since rock samples can be obtained in advance of mining by core hole drilling. The investigation was undertaken in underground mines in the Pocahontas #3 seam in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. The Pocahontas #3 is one of the most widespread in this region and is a major source of high quality metallurgical coal. There are at least ten very large mines in the area and many smaller ones. The region has a very long mining history and considerable experience has been gained in roof control problems. The study was conducted with the support of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

The Mine Injury Reporting System (MIRS) allows users to access accident and production data prepared by the Health and Safety Technology Center of the Mine Safety and Health Administration of the United States Department of Labor for any particular state and to generate a simple, yet informative, report.

A major investigative' program was conducted on the development of an acceptable substitute organic binder for bentonite for the pelletizing of the Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol concentrate. The first phase of the program covered an evaluation of several organic binders in laboratory tire balling in order to identify the most promising potential organic binders. Based on the green ball quality obtained, Peridur C-10, Alchem 8C26 and peat moss were selected for full scale pot-grate testwork. The selected binders were tested with various pelletizing mixes (acid, dolomite, limestone and fully fluxed). The pot-grate test results showed that an acceptable pellet quality can be produced with the use of Peridur C-10.

Although known primarily for native copper, the Keweenaw Peninsula of northern Michigan also has deposits of copper sulfide (chalcocite) ore. A number of small, but rich, deposits are present at relatively shallow depths near the base of a thick, steeply dipping sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Because much of the ore is fracture-controlled, the deposits appear to be ideal candidates for in-situ leaching. Fracture mapping from drill core and borehole logs coupled with borehole packer permeability tests are being applied to evaluate the suitability of the ore for in-situ leaching. A leaching scheme utilizing a bacterial-assisted ferric iron lixiviant is being tested at bench scale. A pilot scale test is being designed to evaluate the system in the field.

While computer assisted engineering, design, and planning have been accepted as tools for specific technical and engineering jobs within the industry, integrating mine-wide monitoring and control systems into mining operations has been slow. This paper reviews the state of the art of mine monitoring and control systems and provides insights into future trends and developments.

The objective of this investigation was to determine the sensitivity of three selected input parameters in the operational control of continuous bottom-fed thickeners used for the treatment of coal refuse slurries. The three variable parameters were "Feed Flow Rate," "Feed pH," and "Feed Solids Concentration." These three input parameters were studied under three polymeric conditions which were cationic polymer, anionic polymer, and a combination of cationic-anionic polymer. For each polymeric condition, two mathematical models were developed: one for overflow response, the other for underflow response. The combination polymers produced the best desired quality of overflow and underflow. For this polymeric condition, changes in the feed solids concentration was the most sensitive factor in the maintenance of the overflow quality, and the feed pH was the most sensitive factor for the maintenance of the underflow quality. The mathematical models generated a set of plots which would allow an operator to control and/or adjust any of the three variables to achieve optimum conditions.

The Tanco pegmatite is located in the Bird River greenstone belt of south-eastern Manitoba approximately 160 km northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1). The orebody was discovered in 1929 and subsequently attempts were made to exploit it for tin by Jack Nutt Mines Ltd. and later in the middle 1950's by Montgary Oil Ltd., who extensively developed but did not produce from its lithium deposits. In 1966 systematic investigation of the pegmatite as a potential source of tantalum led to the founding of Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. (TANCO), and production of tantalum concentrates from the Bernie Lake mine commenced in 1969. Tanco's currently jointly owned by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Cabot Corporation, and the Province of Manitoba.

Separation of dolomite from Florida phosphates was achieved by first conditioning the feed with fatty acid at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at pH 4 or below, before flotation. Observed selectivity of this two stage conditioning process was attributed to the amount as well as changes in the nature of the adsorbed collector species upon reconditioning. In this paper, bench scale flotation results of optimizing the major process parameters, such as reconditioning pH and collector dosage, for upgrading natural high dolomitic phosphate samples from Florida are discussed.

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (?CERCLA?), as amended by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 ("SARA?) establishes a comprehensive Federal regulatory program for addressing environmental and public health risks posed by releases of hazardous substances into the environment from a wide variety of industrial and other sources. The statute is primarily administered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA"). The applicability of CERCLA to the mining, milling, and smelting industries (hereinafter referred to as the ?mining industry?) has been upheld by the courts and recently affirmed by Congress. The purpose of this article is to briefly outline the scope of CERCLA as it applies to the mining industry, the scope of EPA's activities pertaining to the mining industry under CERCLA, the types of remedies which may be pursued by EPA, and the liability scheme of CERCLA as it applies to corporate entities, managers, and shareholders involved with the mining industry. Natural resource damage claims, State cooperative agreements, and other State-related issues will not be discussed.

An expert system is a computer system that performs tasks that are considered by most people to require human expertise. Since their functioning relies heavily on large bodies of knowledge, they are often referred to as knowledge-based systems. These systems can contain the skill and knowledge of an individual human expert or the combined knowledge of a group of experts. The knowledge embodied in an expert system can consist of specific facts, HSHA regulations, heuristics or rules-of-thumb used by the expert, and databases. The purpose of this paper will be to introduce the participants in the ?Increase Competitiveness Thru Innovation? session to expert systems. This introduction will enable the participants to better appreciate the balance of the papers to be presented in this session. These papers will deal with specific mining problems and a proposed innovative solution. This paper will discuss such topics as problem-solving paradigms, rules of inference, knowledge representation, and the structure of expert systems.

Existing classifications of mining and construction equipment have had major deficiencies. They often lack organization, balance, and have remained obscure. Particularly when proceeding to great.er resolution these deficiencies have proven crippling. By adopting "Classes", "Groups" f "Types" and "Kinds" at successive degrees of refinement, a "Taxonomy" is developed based on clear visual differentiation or on a "Morphology??. This symbiotic application, adopted from the Biological Sciences, yields clear, simple and unambiguous results. Supporting this effort are guidelines for easily and credibly sketching equipment which are also distinctive. Numerous illustrative examples are provided. Communications are improved and the engineer obtains a confident feel for the equipment at hand.

In three recent publications, Klimpel et al (1988) and Klimpel and Hansen (1988, 89), the theory and invention process behind the identification of two new classes of sulfide mineral collectors were summarized. These two new families can be represented by the 111 generalized formulate: R1-S-R1 -NRI III (denoted as the F-series chelation family) and R-S-R or R -CHSCH-R (denoted as the S-series redox family). The influence of systematic changes in the various R groupings on laboratory batch flotation cell tests has been covered in the above references and will not be repeated in this paper. In particular, the recent article by Klimpel and Hansen (1989) should be studied as a research introduction to this paper.

Advances in the recovery of gold from heap leaching are being made daily, but of all the systems vital to the maximum recovery of gold from a leach pile, none is more important than the methods used to construct the pile in preparation for the leaching operation. The technology described in this paper illustrates the latest systems developed to minimize compaction in the pile during its construction and reduce the cost of placement of ore on the pile. The Florida Canyon Mine of Pegasus is evaluated in detail to show reasons for its high degree of success to date.

Asbestos is a generic term for industrially useful fibers recovered from exploitable deposits of the asbestiform varieties of five silicate minerals: chrysotile, anthophyl-lite, actinolite-tremolite, cummingtorute-grunerite, and rie-beekite. Asbestos and asbestiform fibers of some other minerals are known to be carcinogenic. Minerals crystallized in the asbestiform habit-are characterized by unique properties (morphology, strength and flexibility, physical and chemical durability, and defect-free surface structures). The key to the unusual properties, and health effects, of asbestiform fibers appears to be in their unusual surface structure. In contrast, non-asbestiform crystals of the same minerals, including the five so called asbestos minerals, do not have these properties and are not carcinogenic.

Effective ground control in the gate entries, particularly in the tailgate travelways, is essential for safe longwall mining. Longwall pillars maintain gate entry stability and carry abutment loads. To answer the need for effective longwall pillar design, an empirical method called Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) was proposed several years ago. Some recent research at the Bureau of Mines has focused on the refinement and verification of the ALPS method. ALPS was originally developed from field studies in which multiple stressmeters were installed in longwall pillars and monitored during mining. Several new field studies have now been incorporated into the ALPS data base. The field measurements have' been used to verify formulas for predicting abutment strength and pillar loads, and to develop an expression for the distribution of the abutment load.
