Cleaning of low-rank coals can have several meanings, depending upon the definitions of the terms "low rank" and "cleaning." In general, low-rank coals would be lignite or subbituminous according to the ASTM classification. For the purposes of this summary, cleaning is defined to be any process which materially reduces the proportion of inert material in the coal. For low-rank coals, this often means a reduction in moisture content since moisture is the major inert component in these coals. A brief discussion of conventional cleaning processes is included, as is an extensive reference list.

The use of medium-to-high sulfur coals has been negatively impacted by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment (CAAA). In this article, a method is demonstrated that can render these coals competitive and yet compliant with Phase II of CAAA. The method uses strategic mining and optimized preparation plant operation to minimize production costs, and it utilizes advanced coal-cleaning technology and an SO2 allowance to produce a compliant coal. The method is illustrated through an example from southern Illinois. For an annual production of 3.2 Mt (3.5 million st) and with a $150/st SO2 allowance cost, it was possible to produce a competitive coal for $0.84/million Btu. The production and allowance costs were $0.608/million Btu and $0.232/million Btu, respectively.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc.’s Betze open pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, NV. Ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County (Fig. 1). The final pit will be about 2440 m long x 1550 m wide (8000 x 5100 ft), elongate in a west-northwesterly direction and about 425 m (1400 ft) deep. The pit straddles the Barrick-Newmont Gold Co. property boundary. History The first hole at the Goldstrike Mine was drilled in 1962. Between 1963 and 1964, 17 shallow holes were drilled with little encouragement, in view of the price of gold at $1.12/g ($35/oz). From 1962 to 1975, several different companies explored the Goldstrike property. In 1975, Pancana Industries acquired the property. The addition of organic and inorganic dispersants to aqueous suspensions of heterogeneous particles (kaolin) was found to significantly affect the solubility of metal ions from kaolin particles and stability of the dispersion. In most of the industrial applications of kaolin, highly concentrated slurries of controlled stability and fluidity are required. The solubility of kaolin particles in terms of aluminum and silicon ions and its effect on the stability of the slurry was investigated. The main objectives of this study were (1) to study the effect of the extracted metals on the properties and performance of the slurry, (2) to understand the reaction mechanism of dissolution of metals from kaolin, and (3) to understand the interaction mechanism of dispersants with kaolin particles. The controlling variables were dispersant dosage, slurry pH, solids loading, and aging.

The paper describes studies made at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, UK, of the mechanical cutting characteristics using disc cutters, of rocks with compressive strengths up to 340 MPa. These studies have been performed in both the single pass mode, where interactive breakout occurs between adjacent grooves on every pass of the tool, and the multiple pass mode, where several passes may be required to cause breakout. In addition, experiments to determine the effect on cutting performance of the hydraulic stiffness of tunnelling machines are described. The results of these tests are analysed and discussed in the context of the design of full-face tunnelling machines.

Traditional sensitivity analysis of metallurgical data has the potential to overestimate the value of mining projects. Such analyses provide no information about the probability of the results. Simulations that rely on the input of statistical information provide more realistic predictions of the value of future projects and offer additional information regarding the probability of the outcome.

Sedimentary phosphate ores are known for their relatively high specific surface area and porosity, which have a positive influence on their reactivity when used as fertilizer in acidic soils or in the manufacture of wet phosphoric acid and phosphatic fertilizers. However, these physical properties could have a negative effect on the behavior of these ores if dried. This effect has been studied on several phosphate ores samples by: the determination of mineralogical and textural properties of these samples, the determination of vapor water sorption isotherms, at different temperatures, from which the sorption heat has been calculated, carrying out several drying tests using a laboratory fluidized bed reactor under constant conditions, which showed important differences in drying rates and residual moistures.

The risk of contamination of dumped tailings and ground water by coal flotation reagents has been investigated by using the 14C-radiotracer method for adsorption and desorption measurements. The results indicate, that a high amount of the reagent components adsorbed on the tailings if there was no coal in the pulp. In coal flotation however a competitive adsorption behaviour could be observed, with the effect that only a low quantity of reagents adsorbed on the tailings. Mobilization tests showed, that only small quantities of reagents could be desorbed by rinsing water. Therefore the contamination of ground water should be low.

This paper presents a laboratory simulation of regrinding and resulting dust generation. An Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator (ARCCS) was modified to conduct regrinding experiment. In order to estimate the effects of coal properties and operating parameters on regrinding and dust generation, an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental design was implemented in regrinding experiment. Marple personal cascade impactors, Series 290, were used to measure dust concentration during experiment. Three types of coal seams, namely, Waynesburg, Pittsburgh, and Lower Kittanning, were used to represent different coal properties. Experimental results and complete parametric analysis were presented.

Ore at the Magmont mine in southeast Missouri is extracted by the room-and-pillar method on two and sometimes three horizons. In 1991, a plan was formulated to recover high-grade ore in pillars using cable halts to accommodate spans of more than 27 m (90 ft ). A test area was selected and a recovery plan developed. A cooperative rock mechanics study was established by Cominco Metals, the US Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah. When initially opened in 1968, the planned production rate was about 910 kt/a (1 million stpy). Due to declining reserves, the production rate was decreased in November 1992 to 570 kt/a (630.000 stpy). Pillar recovery now accounts for about 40% to 50% of the mined tonnage. This method plays a vital role in allowing Magmont to continue to operate.

As the mining industry searches for new ore discoveries increasingly under post-mineral cover, the process of mineral exploration has taken us from prospector to geologist to multidisciplined explorer to multi-disciplinary team. Multidisciplinary exploration techniques have improved in terms of sensitivities and penetration and more than ever before each technique requires specialists with appropriate training and skills to process data and interpret results. To produce a quality product, specialists must collaborate openly and honestly in an atmosphere where the collective result takes into account the knowledge and expertise of each individual and the relationships between all pertinent data sets.

There is a large economic driving force associated with improving metallurgical performance in mineral processing plants using process control. Because of this and other benefits, control systems of the future will develop towards more sophisticated user friendly computer based systems that use powerful software analysis and control techniques. Auto-tuning, adaptive control and process models will gain expanded use because of their transparent availability to the system designer. Control of individual unit operations will be optimized and coordinated through expert systems that monitor economic conditions and management directives and direct operations accordingly. Plant areas, considered cost centers for years, will be integrated into plant-wide control systems for economic control and optimization. New control hardware, process sensors, control strategies and software development tools will be presented, as well as an overview of the economics driving the continued development of advanced process control systems.

When a takeup weight is offset to the side of a conveyor, a wire rope is commonly routed from the takeup weight through a series of sheaves to the takeup carriage. The friction developed from a series of wire rope sheaves can effect the actual belt tension at the make up carriage. Through real-mime testing the actual tension on a makeup carriage was recorded with data acquisition using an internally strain-gauged turnbuckle. The wire rope used to transfer the makeup weight to the makeup carriage was routed through a series of lubricated bronzed bushed sheaves. The tension on the makeup carriage was found to be as much as 26% higher than the weight of the makeup due to the friction in the sheaves. A detailed discussion of the testing and results will be made.

The loading and hauling equipment simulation model was developed to satisfy, the requirements and need of the mining industry in western Canada. It is expected the model will be used to determine the' impact of various combina¬tion of loading and hauling equipment, company policies and maintenance procedures, haulage requirement, to evaluate possibilities, of the use of truck monitoring and dispatch systems, and to access loading and hauling equipment productivities. To evaluate the model, and to access its capabilities in addressing the above requirements, the model was validated. The validation was based on the following: 1. Running the model in-house to evaluate its structure, 2. Running the "test case" by timing models developed elsewhere to compare the results of simulation, 3. Soliciting of model critique from outside agencies, and 4. Comparison of calculated data with real time study data. The presented paper provide overview of the validation processes and summarize" results obtained during comparison and evaluation studies.

One technique for controlling ongoing acidic drainage is to relocate and submerge net-acid-generating waste rock in a lake or water-retaining impoundment. This can lead to the overall improvement of water quality and the reduction In short-term environmental liabilities. A case study of this technique is the Eskay Creek Mine in northern British Columbia. Some findings of the study are: (1) the addition of lime to each truckload of rock, based on its rinse pH, neutralized the accumulated acidity and suppressed the accumulated-metal release, (2) only 10-20% of the dump's neutralization potential had been consumed when acidic drainage appeared, (3) water chemistry in the watershed recovered roughly three years after relocation, and (4) environmental liability was reduced due to the cessation of on-land acidic drainage with no degradation of lake chemistry.

The use of a 25.4-mm- (1-in.-) diam water-only hydro-cyclone for separating liberated 125 x 25- µm high-density particles from similar-size lower-density (2.65 g/cc quartz particles, as might be used in soil washing applications, was investigated. As expected, cyclone performance was greatly affected by changes in cyclone geometry and operating conditions. A single-stage separation recovered 75% of the magnetite (4.8 g/cc) while rejecting nearly 60% of the quartz. With ferrosilicon (7.0 g/cc) as the heavy component, the recovery improved to 85%. The use of dense medium in a single stage increased both ferrosilicon recovery and quartz rejection to approximately 90% each. In addition, computer simulations of a three-stage circuit were performed. The simulations showed that recoveries approaching 97% with quartz rejections of 95% were possible.

The past 15 years has .seen a dramatic increase in the use of computers in the mining industry. Sanford (1) has provided a comprehensive listing of available programs by application within the mining industry as a whole. Figure 1 below illustrates some of the primary uses and computer techniques currently in application in surface coal mines. As shown in Figure 1, computers have been applied to virtually every facet of surface mine development and operation. In particular, many programs presently exist to significantly reduce the time and effort required during the, planning and design phase of a surface mine. Close examination of the approach taken to utilize existing programs, however, reveals that in most instances applications have been implemented piecemeal with the result that users must be fairly sophisticated in their knowledge of computer applications.

A previous investigation showed that corrosion currents estimated from polarization curves for the pyrrhotite-grinding media system under abrasion correlated well with corrosion currents estimated from marked ball wear test data by applying Faraday's law. Freshly abraded metal debris were magnetically attracted to pyrrhotite and lowered the rest potentials of the mineral particles, thereby affecting the corrosive wear. This paper discusses the results of an investigation carried out in an underground mine to characterize the volatile by-products adsorbed on airborne particulates following the detonation of four common explosives including ANFO. The primary objective of this study was to determine if any organic amine compounds, particularly nitrosamines, and any polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were produced and trapped in the dust that a miner might inhale during the workday. The production of these substances is of great concern because of their suspected carcinogenic nature. The results of the study indicated that a large variety of the by-products are adsorbed on the particulates generated, and thus remain airborne following the detonation of explosives. The major by-products retained by the dust were bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, and aliphatic hydrocarbons with carbon chains ranging from C12 to C28. One explosive, a water gel, produced the polycyclic aromatic compound, trimethylnaphthalene. No nitrosamine compounds were detected.

It seems appropriate here to open with a quotation from the great pre-Confucian philosopher Lao-tze: "The softest thing in the world dashes against and overcomes the hardest. There is nothing in the world softer or weaker than water, and yet for attacking things that are firm and strong there is nothing that can take precedence of it." I am happy to report that our system of mining has worked out, with minor modifications, as well or better than was predicted. This, in a period of rising labor and material costs, has been most gratifying. Gilsonite is a solid hydrocarbon which occurs in vertical fissures cutting the sandstone and shale beds of the Uintah formation in south¬eastern Utah. It is found in other parts of the world under similar occurrence but nowhere else is it now being mined commercially. The Gilsonite veins on entering the shale members of the Green¬river formation break into small veinlets separated by shale, These veinlets are not now economical to mine.
