The DEAREX knowledge acquisition and engineering system is a teaching and exploration tool designed to facilitate the under- standing and development of expert systems by explorationists without the aid of a knowledge engineer and without recourse to expert system languages. To fulfill its objective, the DEAREX system considers the selection of exploration methods in desert areas. The system consists of three parts: 1. A tutorial which introduces the basic and selected advanced concepts of expert systems, 2. A sample program illustrating how an expert system works and can be used, and, most importantly, 3. A knowledge acqusition and engineering program which enables users to develop their own expert systems. The tutorial provides a brief and concise introduction to expert systems, a 10 rule exploration example which defines, explains and illustrates the basic concepts and design of expert systems, and a glossary of expert system terms including cross references. The sample program is a larger, self contained example of an expert system with some commentary illustrating addition- al expert system concepts and the role of the knowledge engineer in particularizing rules and ascertaining the knowledge base. Restricting itself to the selection of exploration methods in desert areas, the knowledge acquisition and engineering program questions the user and converts the answers into an expert system. Questions pertain to geology, infrastructure, availability of instrumentation, personnel, etc. Additional information may also included. In conclusion, some salient points concerning knowledge engineering toolkits, shells and knowledge acquisition capabilities such as contained in DEAREX are discussed.

Gold-silver and copper-gold deposits with high-temperature wallrock alteration of Ca-Mg-Fe-Al silicates occur in ca. 3.0 Ga old greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia. The deposits are hosted by amphibolite-facies komatiites, basalts and BIF, controlled by ductile shear zones and located within the contact-metamorphic aureoles of composite granodiorite-granite batholiths. Disseminated sulfides and free gold form foliation-parallel ore zones in a gangue of anhydrous silicates (garnet, clinopyroxene, olivine), hydrous silicates (amphibole, biotite) and calcite. The deposits may be classified on the basis of their dominant economic metals as: 1(1) Gold skarns with substantial silver as by-product, represented by the Marvel Loch mine (production: 2,200,000 t at 3.5 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association pyrrhotite, loellingite, arsenopyrite, galena, gold and magnetite. (2) Gold skarns with low silver contents, represented by the Nevoria mine (production:1,850,000 t at 3.4 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, gold, Bi-tellurides and magnetite. (3) Copper-gold skarns, represented by the Elverdton mine (production: 850,000 t at .7 5 Cu, 0.81 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association magnetite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, gold and Ag-Bi tellurides.

Recent allegations about tampering of coal mine dust samples have led to suggestions that the coal industry needs a respirable dust compliance sampling method that is less subject to tampering. The sampler designs under consideration include fixed location monitors that could be mounted on a mining machine or located at a stationary location in the mine, and samplers that are worn, like the existing samplers. Fixed-point samplers have a design advantage, since samplers worn on the body will have size and weight limitations. On the other hand, in some cases there are respirable dust concentration gradients, which will dictate careful placement of a fixed-point sampler inlet to determine the exposure of workers. This study examined dust concentration-gradient data obtained by the Bureau of Mines and others over the last decade. As an example of spatial gradients at continuous miners, a fixed-point monitor located in front of the operators cab shows a higher dust concentration than a sampler located on the operator and reduced exposure when the sampling location is behind the operator cab. It may be necessary to use a sampling tube with a machine mounted monitor, to sample in the operators breathing zone in the cab to provide a more representative sample of the miners exposure. For face workers on longwalls or on continuous miner sections using remote control, the study shows significant dust level gradients and gradient variations between typical operator positions and mining machine locations. In addition, if fixed-point monitoring is used to monitor an area, vs the exposure of specific workers, dust control technologies currently employed to ensure reduced dust exposure such as the diversion of dust laden air away from the workers, or through the use of remote control of mining machinery may not indicate the same dust reduction obtained with current sampling techniques.

All copper ore haulage at Isamine was transferred to the new 19 level haulage network by mid 1975. Previous experience together with design studies had indicated that a three train operation would be required to haul the scheduled ore production. The ore train with a gross weight of 600 tonne is made up of 15 bottom dumping trucks hauled by twin electric locomotives (Figure 1). Present train speeds reach 40 km/hr and, in the future, this speed could be increased to 55 km/hr. The planned operation on the restricted track network and the relatively high train speed meant that the train driver operated block light system would be inadequate on the grounds of haulage safety and meeting production targets. Some form of Centralised Train Control (CTC) system emerged as a necessity, and as an initial step, tenders were called for a relay control type CTC system. The high cost of these systems and the anticipated high maintenance costs and inflexibility of the offered systems led to the rejection of the tenders. It was decided to develop a CTC system locally and to use a digital computer to perform the basic track [ ] equipment interlocking tasks and monitor haulage operation.

INTRODUCTION The mining of gold commenced on the Witwatersrand in 1884, and reached a mature state by about 1910, when nearly 20 million metric tons were mined. Mining has continued on the central Witwatersrand, the area of the first mining, at a similar rate until recent years. As a result, well over 1 billion tons of gold mining wastes have been dumped along a line over 80 km long, centred on Johannesburg and stretching from Randfontein in the west to Nigel in the east. (see Figure 1). The population of this conurbation, which straddles the line of mining, has grown to about 5 million. In 1922 uranium was first discovered as a constituent of the ore (and thus of the wastes). Investigations in the 1940's revealed that values near Johannesburg were low, but that, at the western and eastern ends of the central Witwatersrand line, and in the new areas centred on the towns of Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Welkom up to 200 km from Johannesburg, values were adequate to permit uranium recovery. Commercial production commenced in 1952, and by 1979 over 100 000 tons of uranium oxide had been produced. There thus arises on the central Witwatersrand nearly 1,3 billion tons of slimes containing an average of about 0,005% uranium and about 1,8% FeS2. The material grading is about 70%-75µm, and the primary mineral is silica (over 85%). The material is contained in dams constructed hydraulically. A typical dam has an area of about 100 hectares and there are over 6000 ha under slimes dams in the area of concern. The treatment of these dams for uranium recovery commenced in 1977. The situation has thus arisen whereby potential uranium ores have unwittingly been dumped in significant quantities within a major metropolis over a period of nearly a century. The purpose of this note is to review the experience arising from the potential hazard over a considerable time.

The flotation chemistry of the commercial INCO matte separation process was investigated. The slow cooling of Bessemer converter matte forms discrete phases of Cu2S and Ni3S2 and a Cu-Ni alloy. After magnetically removing the alloy, the Cu2S and Ni3S2 are separated by flotation at pH 12.4 (saturated lime) using diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. DPG has been used exclusively in this flotation process because of its unusual selectivity for copper minerals. The surface product resulting from chemisorption of DPG onto the Cu2S was identified as the double salt Cu(DPG)2SO4,.CU(DPG)2(OH)2. The adsorption followed Langmuir behaviour up to a monolayer coverage. In the absence of DPG, the rapid adsorption of oxygen by Cu2S in flotation pulps was observed. The surface product was identified as the insoluble basic copper sulfate CuSO4.3Cu(OH)2 with the production of sulfate ion. In the presence of DPG, the oxidation reaction appears to be suppressed. The frothing properties of DPG and commercial frothers were compared. DPG is not a powerful frother. Batch flotation tests confirmed that DPG is a highly selective collector when compared to most sulfhydryl collectors.

"Can the ever-increasing tonnages of ore and waste being mined today be accommodated simply by using bigger and better crushers? This paper reviews the latest primary crushing and large cone crusher designs. It highlights how—in addition to using the larger crushers now available—maximizing the utilization percentages in each of the four stages of the rock size reduction circuit will assist in meeting the larger production requirements of existing and new mining operations. Its goal is to help consultants and operators select the optimal equipment and custom-designed items in the material handling flowsheet from the mine to the mill, maximizing operating hours per year. INTRODUCTION Are larger crushers the answer to meeting the demands of existing or new mining projects for increased tonnage? Boyd (2002) predicted that larger crushers for primary and fine crushing would be beneficial and contribute to the further development of mineral processing. Larger crushers for primary and fine crushing applications are now available. The rock size reduction process from the mine to the selected milling process facility has not changed since man first broke a rock to get at the interesting mineralization within. The rock size reduction process circuit from the mine to the mill can be summarized in four stages: • Stage 1: Mining (rock breakage and fragmentation) • Stage 2: Pre-screening (scalping) • Stage 3: Primary crushing • Stage 4: Fine crushing (secondary, tertiary and quaternary) Plant throughput and ore delivery schedule will form the basis for flowsheet design and equipment selection. Once the project design criteria and the mine plan have been established, the circuit’s utilization percentage (percentage of hours when the circuit is being utilized) can be optimized for each of the four stages. The mining and process departments are the key stakeholders in the selection of the final comminution circuit, and both departments should be familiar with and contribute to the design of the circuit. This paper focuses on the four stages of a rock size reduction circuit from the mine to the mill, equipment selection, various ore and waste handling flowsheets, and improvements in crusher station design, all with the purpose of maximizing availability and plant utilization percentages. What is a large tonnage? From 1907 to 1914, the American Panama Canal excavated 300 million tonnes of material in 7 years (History of the Panama Canal, Wikipedia). Today’s large mining operations can move the same material in 10 months, using large crushers or multiple crushers for ore processing and large crushers and a mixture of truck haulage and conveyors for handling the large waste tonnages. Optimal gold recoveries largely depend on efficient liberation of the gold or gold-bearing minerals as well as on maximum access for the lixiviant. Thus, crushing and grinding may become the most costly part of gold ore processing. It may, in fact, represent 50% to 70% of a plant's operating costs (Michaelis, 1989). The increasing significance of refractory gold will require even more cost-efficient comminution of ultrafine sulfides and/or native gold. Transitional ore zones with semi refractory gold may respond to direct leaching if better particle fracturing is being achieved (Baum, 1991, 1993a). Many oxide ores have been left in the ground because they were unsuitable for heap leaching since conventional comminution could not facilitate economic gold extraction. Also, the costs of conventional bal1 mill operations did not permit the recovery of gold from many ultrafine, low-grade refractory ores. As shown by Marsden et al. (1993), the trend to treat ores with progressively lower grades will involve power-and leach-efficient grinding applications. Our current laboratory work shows that high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) Polycom grinding may enable many mining companies to add large amounts of these "non-leachable" ores to their current heap or mill leach feeds. This finding may dramatically change the economics of many oxide gold ore operations and may add significant reserves to ores amenable to direct cyanidation.

Eldorado Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. owns and operates three gold mines. The Sao Bento underground gold mine in Minas Gerais State, Brazil produced 105,907 ounces in 1997. The La Colorada and La Trinidad open pit, heap leach mines in Mexico produced over 83,000 ounces in 1997. With a deteriorating gold market plaguing the industry throughout 1997 Eldorado had to take critical measures at each mine to enhance gold production while lowering cash operating costs. Each mine had its own unique problems to confront. This case study will discuss three distinct courses of action taken at the three mine sites.

"The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) recently completed the 24-foot diameter Euclid Creek Tunnel using a steel-fiber reinforced concrete segmental lining. During construction HMM, the McNally/Kiewit JV, CSI/Hanson JV, and the NEORSD performed a test program to evaluate replacement of steel fiber with synthetic fiber. A section of synthetic-fiber-reinforced cast-in-situ lining was also placed as part of the permanent works for the starter and tail tunnels. Laboratory and field testing were performed on two complete segmental rings reinforced solely with synthetic fibers. This paper summarizes the testing program, construction, and results of the synthetic-fiber-reinforced CIP lining and concrete segments. INTRODUCTION The principal feature of the Euclid Creek Tunnel (ECT) project is a CSO storage tunnel that is one component of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’s (NEORSD) Easterly CSO storage and conveyance system. The tunnel, shafts, and appurtenant facilities will be used for the collection and storage of CSOs from the northeastern part of Cleveland, Ohio and subsequent conveyance to the NEORSD’s Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment. The ECT project includes five drop shafts that extend as deep as 220 feet below the ground surface. The ECT alignment and shaft locations are shown in Figure 1. Traditionally in northeast Ohio, tunnel excavations were supported with a two-pass system using steel ribs and timber lagging, followed by cast-in-place concrete. Control of rock overbreak proved difficult with large-diameter two-pass operation, and invert degradation led to train derailments. To mitigate these risks, the ECT was supported using one-pass, precast, bolted, gasketed concrete segments reinforced with steel fiber alone. Tunneling operations were very successful and experienced no significant delays or claims. As a result of the positive ECT experience with steel fiber-reinforced segments, Hatch Mott MacDonald, LLC (HMM), McNally/Kiewit (MK) joint venture, CSI/Hanson (CSI/H) joint venture, and the NEORSD performed a test program to evaluate replacement of steel fibers with synthetic fibers in segmental rings. This paper presents the laboratory and field testing program, construction, and results of the synthetic-fiber-reinforced cast-in-place (CIP) lining and concrete segments."

Inflatable friction rock bolts (IFRBs) are often considered temporary ground support due to their susceptibility to weakening from corrosion. The effective service life of an IFRB can be difficult to estimate due to the multitude of factors that affect the rate of corrosion. Some mine sites have experienced several-year-long service lives of IFRBs without issue, while others experience corrosion-related falls of ground only weeks after installation. The most common industry method of assessing bolt performance is by pull testing the fixture. However, due to the IFRB’s ability to mobilize its full tensile capacity with less than 2 feet of anchored length, corrosion along the bolt at depths greater than 2 feet from the collar cannot be identified using this approach. Alternatively, reinflation testing is a simple and non-destructive method of evaluating the condition of an entire bolt length for breaches in the bolt wall. This can be particularly useful when assessing the extent of corrosive conditions within a particular mining area where instabilities have already occurred and the condition of nearby bolts is unknown, or when re-entering historic mine workings which have not been monitored.

The northern spur of the Bakhuis Mountains contains bauxite deposits on a dissected planation level, a region formerly indicated as the Adampada-Kabalebo area. Iron-rich laterites are ubiquitous on all more or less flat and horizontal to moderately sloping interfluves and planation levels. The known aluminous laterites and bauxites are restricted to those laterites that have relatively leucocratic and silica-poor parent rocks. The whole area is underlain by high-metamorphic Precambrian. In the northern half of the Guiana Shield at least four Cainozoic planation levels can be distinguished. The bauxite and aluminous laterite deposits are related to the oldest, Early Tertiary level. These deposits, occupying the highest positions in the present day landscape, show the destructive influence of post-laterite weathering, erosion and denud- ation; they are erosion remnants and as such are of irregular thickness, grade and shape. Consequently, exact mineable tonnages can only be determined after intensive and detailed sampling and evaluation, taking into account the latest technical and economic parameters. The bauxite potential of the region is negatively influ- enced by the complicated uplift history of the Bakhuis horst, and positively by the presence of suitable parent rock and possibly more than one phase of bauxitization.

The studied coal mi1e is an underground coal mine located in the northern Wasatch Plateau of central Utah (Figure 1) . Since operation began in 1981, in situ stress conditions have been encountered which differ from the assumed conditions utilized during early mine design efforts. Geologic structures also varied somewhat from those projected during initial geologic interpretations of the area. The encountered geologic conditions combined with the unusual stress conditions prompted a combined study of in situ stress and stress-related geologic structures. The study was conducted in two phases, with phase 1 consisting of detailed underground mapping and analysis of stress-related geologic structures to determine stress orientations from which they originated; and phase 2, consisting of over- coring two sites within the mine to determine present in situ stress orientations and magnitudes. GEOLOGIC ANALYSIS Three types of geologic structures have been encountered in the mine that act as indicators of stress orientations of the geologic past. Two of these structures, faulting, and igneous dikes, are directly measurable in the mine. A third type of structure, photolineation, was detected through remote sensing methods and shoe god correlation to roof conditions in certain areas of the mine. Faults Two major orientations of faulting have been encountered in the studied coal mine, including a system of N 80 W striking normal faults and a system of N 55 to 70 W striking oblique-slip faults. Only data collected from the oblique-slip faults were used for this study due to the fact that these faults offset the N 80 W faults wherever the two systems intersect, indicating that the N 55 to 70 W system was created by a more recent stress field. Figure 2 shows locations within the mine where data were collected from seven locations along oblique-slip faults. Data collection consisted of measurement of fault plane strike and dip, fault slickenside trend and plunge, and slip direction. The data are tabulated in Table 1. The fault data were then plotted on stereo nets to determine the stress orientations present at the td of faulting (Figure 3). The determined stress orientations are 32~0 included in Table 1. The stereo net plots show average principal stress orientations of: 1) [ ] plunge 1 degree. These data suggest that the N 55 to 70 W oblique-slip faults were produced by a nearly

Seeking to implement the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management to improve the safety of their tailings facilities across the globe, mining companies are motivated to invest in new technologies to recover valuable minerals from tailings. One solution being evaluated is the use of magnetic separators to concentrate ultrafine tailings. However, this approach is energy intensive as it requires high magnetic fields to recover ultrafines, and usually results in low mass yields. Additives that modify pulp rheology and surface properties, or selective flocculate ultrafine particles, were tested to enhance the performance of magnetic separation. Promising results in laboratory scale testing different types of additives confirmed that it is possible to increase the mass yield, keeping the selectivity of this stage.

It is considered that the most economical method for the exploitation of Gol-e-Gohar Area 3 iron ore mine is to combine open-pit and underground methods. In this regard, the most critical problem is the determination of optimal final pit depth. In this paper, a method which was recently introduced on the basis of economical block models of open-pit and underground is used to determine optimal final open-pit depth of Gol-e-Gohar Area 3 mine with due regards to the future underground mining option. Considering a low cost and productive underground method as a feasible alternative for extraction of the lower part of this deposit, room and pillar was selected. It is concluded that after the assessment and comparison of different values for depth, optimal final open-pit depth was determined to be equal to 285 m.

"On underground construction projects, effective Quality Management is essential for ensuring facility durability, life cycle performance and low maintainability. Furthermore, follow on contracts also rely on an effective quality management system for interface congruency. An effective Quality Management System (QMS) is also essential in mitigating risks and meeting schedule and budget performance objectives. For the past 15 years Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority’s Link Light Rail extension has successfully completed over 10 miles of twin bore tunneling and associated underground features including cross passages, deep sump structures and shafts. After the completion of each segment, lessons learned have successfully been implemented to improve the quality of delivered projects. This paper presents the Sound Transit QMS with regard to a number of project elements of tunnel construction projects, with specific focus on quality performance of slurry wall construction, TBM tunnel excavation assessment, segment production and segmental lining installation, and other associated construction features. A collaborated total QMS will be presented in this paper that will serve as a guide for successful implementation of Quality Assurance and Quality Control processes. INTRODUCTION Implementation of a robust Quality Management System reduces defects, errors and omissions, identifies and addresses nonconformance in a timely manner and increases stakeholder confidence in the project. In fact and effective QMS helps ensure that optimal project outcomes are realized both in terms of project delivery and life cycle performance. The two key components of QMS are quality control and quality assurance. Quality Control (QC) is the procedure implemented to achieve a certain level of quality and ensure that products, processes and services meet specific requirements. Quality Assurance (QA) activities are carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the quality control measures and ensure that the QC process is working. A team obligation that recognizes that quality is built into every aspect of a project is the basic concept of a successful QMS."

INTRODUCTION Certain activities, such as emergency work and rescue operations, often have to be undertaken in environments where heat loads often exceed limits prescribed for routine work. This is particularly relevant to the South African mining industry where heat stress-induced fatalities are not uncommon during rescue operations. In this regard an excessively hot environment is defined as one where either the dry-bulb temperature exceeds 37,0°C or the wet-bulb temperature exceeds 32,5"C, and it is therefore not surprising that heat stroke mortality escalates rapidly when these limits are exceeded. A review of both local and international standards indicated that the available information on safe exposure times under abnormal heat stress conditions is very limited. Where available, such standards are aimed at the general population, including both sexes, irrespective of age and also the least heat tolerant worker, and not at a medically-screened, all-male population free of grossly heat intolerant individuals, as is the case in the South African mining industry. It is suggested that available norms and limits are too conservative for local application and, therefore, unrealistic. In view of the definite need to protect workers when exposed to abnormally high environmental temperatures, the present study was undertaken to establish a scientifically derived data base. applicable to local conditions, to determine safe exposure times: Any exposure limit, especially in an emergency situation, should be easy to administer, valid and reliable. These aspects, there- fore, form an integral part of this paper. FORMULATION OF HEAT STRESS LIMITS The formulation of heat stress limits was based on the criterion that a heat exposed individual should experience a negligible risk of developing dangerously elevated body temperatures. In order to provide a database for risk assessment, certain physiological responses of heat tolerant men were determined at various combinations of thermal conditions and work rate in a climatic chamber. These physiological responses were analysed statistically in order to predict safe survival and tolerance times as a function of thermal conditions and work rate. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN A total of 202 randomly selected, medically fit mine workers volunteered for the study on the basis of informed consent. These men were considered to be inherently heat tolerant in as far as they had successfully completed a heat tolerance test (Anon., 1991) or the standard climatic room acclimatisation procedure used on many South African gold mines (Anon., 1989). "Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits at the working face of a room and pillar mine is a challenge for mine operators. With the recent changes in the respirable-dust regulation, it has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) stated that a flooded-bed scrubber, under its optimum condition, can achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90 percent. The performance of such a system can be maintenance intensive. Other industries face similar dust control issues. The University of Kentucky partnered with Toyota Motor Manufacturing for the development of a novel wet scrubber for capturing paint overspray, with capture efficiencies in excess of 98 percent and minimal maintenance. The aim of this study is to assess the ability of this novel wet scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. This paper presents the conceptual design and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this novel wet scrubber. It discusses the results of the CFD simulation performed on the novel wet dust scrubber. INTRODUCTION Dust generation from underground coal mining is an inescapable phenomenon. No matter the practices employed, it inevitably occurs. Elevated concentrations of coal dust are potential health and safety hazards. Although dust in an underground coal mine cannot be completely avoided, its influence can be mitigated through good engineering practices. The effect of dust on the health of mining personnel has had a significant impact. The prolonged exposure of airborne respirable dust (< 5 µm) can cause coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), silicosis, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis, collectively known as black lung (U.S. Department of Labor, 2014). According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, black lung has killed more than 10,000 miners between 1995 and 2004 (NIOSH, 2008). In addition to being a health issue, coal dust is also a safety issue to the underground coal miners. The generated dust, if not captured, is dispersed into the mine air through the ventilating air and deposited downwind on the return entries’ surfaces. In the event of a methane explosion, the coal dust, if insufficiently diluted with rock dust, triggers a coal dust explosion which is much more severe than a methane explosion and causes more damage (Kenneth et al, 2006). The Jim Walters No. 5 Mine and the Upper Big Branch Mine disasters which together killed 42 people and resulted in damage worth millions of dollars in property are the examples of coal dust explosions (U.S. Department of Labor, 2001 & 2010)."

INTRODUCTION The economic structures of industrialized countries require a continuous supply of reasonably priced and appropriately processed nonfuel minerals. As a result, national policy makers are sensitive to real or perceived threats to the effective operation of these commodity markets. Their most persistent concerns can be subsumed into the related political economy issues of supply availability and marketplace stability. These concerns are not new. For over a century the "global struggle" for mineral resources has influenced national policies and international relations (Eckes, 1979). During the past two decades the complexity of these issues, if not their place on national political agendas, has increased. Dramatic changes in the structure of mineral industries and in the nature of international economic relations have redefined policy needs and response options. This paper focuses on how selected OECD countries have responded to nonfuel mineral industry issues over the past twenty-five years. Particular emphasis is placed on the impact these policy decisions have had on the size and location of productive capacity and its utilization rates. The results, perhaps, are not surprising for this group of market- oriented economics. While individual cases of significant impact are easy to identify at various times in most countries, the overall importance of policy decisions has not been great. This is especially true for the past decade when excess capacity reached unusual highs of magnitude and duration. Macroeconomic forces and market structure changes played much more important roles. PERSPECTIVES ON THE ISSUES OECD nations dominate the international nonfuel minerals marketplace as producers, consumers and traders. In 1986, these twenty-four countries accounted for 75 percent of the Western world&apos;s export trade value in minerals, ores and metals. They imported 88 percent of the total value. During 1966, the respective percentages were 70 and 94. Japan was the world&apos;s largest importer in 1986 followed by the US, FRG, UK and France. The same five countries led the 1966 list except that, then, Japan was ranked fourth. Table 1 ranks the fifteen largest Western exporting nations in the two specified years. It also indicates the growth in current export dollars earned in 1986 compared to 1966.

In a continuing effort to improve plant efficiency, United States Steel&apos;s Atlantic City Ore Operations completed the rubber lining of its balling drums in late 1982. This resulted in benefits of reduced bentonite consumption, reduced maintenance costs, improved production rates, and lower power consumption. These advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of increased oversize production and increased surging on the roll screen sizing devices. Certain operating characteristics and variables are discussed herein.
