Bismuth, one of the heavier chemical elements, is a pinkish metalloid that is chemically related to antimony. It is a byproduct of lead and tungsten extraction and, to a lesser extent, of copper and tin extraction. Antimony is a metalloid and less heavy chemical element, an extraction coproduct of metals such as lead, silver and gold. While both bismuth and antimony are metalloids, their major uses are as chemical compounds. We present an algorithm to integrate the uncertainties of mean activity rate and magnitude cumulative distribution function in the interval estimation of the primary seismic hazard parameters: the exceedance probability and the mean return period. The algorithm is applicable for both the parametric and nonparametric modeling of magnitude distribution. When the Gutenberg-Richter relation-based parametric model of magnitude distribution is used, the interval estimation of its parameters is based on the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimators. When the nonparametric kernel estimation of magnitude distribution is used, we apply the iterated bias-corrected and accelerated method for the interval estimation, based on the smoothed bootstrap and second-order bootstrap samples. Previous studies indicated that the uncertainty of mean activity rate significantly affects the interval estimates of hazard functions only when the activity rate is low and the inference period is not long (Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki 2017). With increasing mean activity rate, the uncertainty of magnitude distribution dominates over the uncertainty of mean activity rate in the aggregated uncertainty of the hazard functions. The provided algorithm is generic and can be applied to capture the uncertainty of any multiparameter function from the uncertainties of its parameters. Here we present a further development of the algorithm developed by Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki (2017) by presenting its implementation in the Traffic Light System approach. As an example of use, we present the confidence intervals estimation of hazard parameters for the datasets related to induced seismicity accompanying underground exploitation of copper ore in the Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD) in Poland. The algorithm is under implementation to the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/) - an IT platform that provides access to integrated research infrastructures of the Thematic Core Service of Anthropogenic Hazards (TCS AH) of EPOS (European Plate Observing System). The algorithm is also a component of the pilot developed within the EPOS SP project (No 871121), which aims to strengthen the interaction with the private sector and the added value for society. The pilot demonstrates the potential of the IS-EPOS platform software applications for the technology-related probabilistic assessment of time-dependent seismic hazard. The pilot supports a Traffic Light System approach. The current seismic hazard is compared to threshold values based on the exceedance probability for a given magnitude.

For the 36th consecutive summer, the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation and the Colorado School of Mines have sponsored “A Total Concept of the Mining Industry” for kindergarten through grade 12 teachers. Teachers from 34 states, plus the District of Columbia and two foreign countries, have graduated from the four-week course. They received six hours of recertification credit. This summer 31 teachers from Colorado, Kentucky, Virginia and Alaska completed the program. The course is unique from other shorter courses in that it solicits teachers of all disciplines from all K-12classes. In addition to the expected earth science and mathematics teachers, the Class of 2004 consisted of educators who teach music, chemistry, biology, social studies, history, basic English and world history. Others in the program included those who teach American history, physical and life science, remedial reading, consumer/family studies, “world of work,” language arts, engineering technology, environmental science, world geography, human anatomy and physiology, and business.

The marble deposits of Yule Creek were first discovered in the late1870s. Minor quarrying occurred between that discovery and the early 1900s. Major development occurred in 1905, when Channing Meek, with some help from the Rockefellers, raised $3 million to develop the Colorado Yule Marble Quarry. That is $50 million in today’s dollars. Some of the words used to describe the marble deposit were “gigantic, remarkable, flawless and immense.” Boosters proclaimed, “The marble age is here.” Obviously, dreams were big for Marble.

INTRODUCTION Two promising innovative tunnel support systems are being developed by the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Illinois. One of these is a lining which can be placed by a slipform located immediately behind and contiguous with a tunneling machine. Recent advancements in construction materials appear to provide the breakthrough required to make such a system feasible and practical. The lining material which permits this construction scheme is wire fiber reinforced concrete made with high, very early strength regulated-set cement. Parts I and II of this paper relate to this slipformed liner. Part I discusses the material and equipment required to install the liner. The "Extruded Liner System" (ELS) has been devised to place the lining. This ELS concept is briefly described and a tentative development program is outlined. In Part II, the physical properties and practical construction aspects of the liner material are discussed and a program for structural testing of 10-ft diameter prototype tunnel supports is presented. Part III contains descriptions of improvements to conventional steel-rib tunnel supports. It is shown that square tubular box sections are structurally superior to wide flange sections for complex loading conditions often encountered in rock tunnels. Analytical studies and tests on connections have been performed to evaluate their structural behavior. These are presented along with a program for comparative large-scale tests on horseshoe-shaped frames with a 10-foot span. This research is being conducted by the Department of Civil

The Hallandsås project with a long history, first started in 1991, is well known in the tunneling community. In the past it has been stopped twice for technical and environmental reasons. The third attempt started in 2004 using a dual mode rock TBM. The heterogeneous highly fractured and abrasive rock mass as well as large areas of water bearing zones present most difficult subsurface conditions. The tunneling concept is based on the use of watertight segmental lining and a TBM able to operate in open mode, possibilities for extensive pre excavation grouting and high pressure closed mode operation up to 13 bar to cover exceptional conditions.

The North 27th St. ISS Extension tunnel will, under present plans, be the last constructed section of Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District?s (MMSD?s) existing deep tunnel system. The 6.5 m (21 ft) finished diameter tunnel is approximately 3,260 m (10,590 ft) long and is located in NE Milwaukee County. When disputes over the pro-cesses to be used in owner-directed pre-excavation grouting in rock threatened the completion date stipulated between MMSD and the State of Wisconsin, the MMSD and J.F. Shea, the contractor, entered into a unique agreement. Shea accepted responsibility for all shaft and tunnel grouting and water control during the project in exchange for settlement of claims related to grout quantities and perceived delays. This significantly reduced risk for the MMSD and helped ensure the stipulated completion of the project.

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 in New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be widespread through much of the Tasman fold belts of Eastern Australia. Production is estimated to be some 500,000 carats from several small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration, though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond content has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia during the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives. Of those, 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe, however, the 1200 Ma high-grade Argyle lamproite and associated nearby alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable. Its current annual production is 40 million carats valued at about US$400 million. Production from the open pit will be sustainable until at least 2003.

The usage of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is increasing rapidly throughout the Mining Industry, especially in the Industrial Minerals sector. GIS provides an efficient and robust link between spatial (often CADD) and tabular (database/spreadsheet) components. Mineral economists and corporate planners employ GIS to perform market analyses, to source raw materials, and to schedule and monitor deliveries to customers. Exploration and acquisition groups apply spatial analysis to identify high quality resources that meet economic guidelines. Mining regulators and environmental affairs departments expedite and monitor permitting, environmental compliance, and best management practices reclamation through GIS data management and Electronic Permitting. Operations staffs monitor overburden removal, material extraction, quality control, and stockpile volumes with GIS. This paper summarizes the many aspects of GIS in Industrial Minerals. It also introduces and addresses issues and concerns commonly encountered during a mining GIS implementation.

Introduction The most commonly used ground control design in coal mining is the determination of pillar size by various pillar strength formulae for mine layout (Bieniawski, 1983; Holland, 1973; Hustrulid, 1976; Obert and Duvall 1967; Wilson and Ashwin, 1972). However, there have been few documented case histories concerning the validity of those strength formulae. Recently there are indications that those strength formulae tend to overdesign considerably. From a safety point of view, there is nothing wrong with overdesign. But an overdesign with large chain pillars reduces the flexibility of machine movement and decreases production. It also reduces coal recovery and, thus, shortens the reserve's life. This is especially true for small operators who own a limited reserve. Those small mines, through past practices or out of necessity, experiment with smaller pillars than those predicted by the strength formulae. Conclusive ev¬idence has been collected that points to the need of a new concept of coal pillar design. Two case studies will be cited to illustrate this point. 3-D US pillar strength formulae Figure 1 shows a sectional layout of a one-unit mine. The seam was about 1.3 m (50 in.) thick with a uniform cover of 64 m (210 ft). A house was located near the center of the section. The homeowner demanded that no surface subsidence and domestic well dewatering should ever be allowed as a result of underground room-and-pillar mining. Physical properties - strength and Young's modulus - of the rock strata including coal were obtained by testing small samples in the laboratory. The uniaxial compressive strength of the coal was 3660 kPa (823 psi). Using various pillar strength formulae, the homeowner recommended that square chain pillars be at least 11 m (35 ft) wide. The coal company, however, desired to pursue optimum coal recovery in the safest and most economical manner. They engaged in three-dimensional finite element analysis of the section taking into account the complete stratigraphic sequence of the overburden. Results indicated that the section can be developed by 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries at 21 m (70 ft) center-to-center. In retreat, the pillars can be splitted along both centerlines leaving a stump pillar of 5.5 m (18 ft) square at each of the four corners. Silver Bell produces about 22,000T of fine copper annually from low-grade chalcocite and oxidized copper ore that is recovered by sulfuric acid leaching and SX-EW processing. The current mineable reserves are 146 million short tons averaging 0.39% Cu, at a 0.15% cutoff. Silver Bell utilizes two types of mining methods to develop the low-grade reserves: (1) a conventional blast, load and haul method for run-of-mine leach ore, and (2) rubblization of material on the margins of existing pits. Rubble leach ore is blasted, terraced with a bulldozer, and leached in place. Mining and/or rubble leaching is currently active in four separate pits. Laramide-age intrusive rocks host porphyry copper mineralization at Silver Bell. Quartz monzonite porphyry dikes and stocks, mafic-poor equigranular granite (alaskite), and sub-volcanic dacite porphyry are the predominant host rocks. Most of the ore currently mined comes from near-horizontal enrichment zones containing veinlets and disseminated grains of pyrite and chalcopyrite rimmed by chalcocite. Conversion from a milling operation to a leach only operation allowed for a much lower cutoff grade than was historically used at Silver Bell. Mine geologists were able to increase copper resources by drilling exploration targets that were previously interpreted to provide lower-grade mineralization below cutoff-grade for milling. Geologic parameters that effect the distribution of rubble and mineable leach ore include: ore grade and thickness, variable alteration styles in intrusive host rocks that affect fragmentation during blasting, acid consuming carbonate wallrocks (reactive skarn) which influence leach solution pH, solution flow paths and drainage, presence of leachable oxide mineralization in non-reactive skarn, and depth to hypogene mineralization which is currently uneconomic. Geologic parameters are used to predict rubble bench limits, vary blast hole spacing for consistent fragmentation, and correct errors in mineral zone classification based solely on blast hole assays. An expansion-drilling program has identified approximately 150 million tons of new leachable copper resources with an average grade of 0.35% Cu.

In current post-industrial America, U.S. manufacturing is undergoing major changes both in the technology of its production and in the size and composition of its workforce. At the same time that computers and robotics move the shop floor toward becoming the unmanned "factory of the future" [1], they increase the need within the overall production enterprise for new types of technicians and engineering professionals [2]. Based on previous works which examined, first, the evolution of the technology of manufacturing toward the flexibly-automated factory of the future and, second, the technical- professionalization of U.S. manufacturing sectors [1,3], this paper looks briefly at the workforce of the U.S. metals industry.

China’s land area, comparable in size to United States or Canada, contains diverse geological environments and mineral resource potential. The diversity in geological environments is such that the potential for developing many world-class mineral deposits in China is good. However, China’s mining sector was not open to foreign investment until the1990s. The long-term prospect for Chinese resource development is attractive because of China’s enormous population and cumulative demand for minerals. Approximately 33 foreign mineral companies, including 11 major internationals, are to various degrees active in China. Chinese mining laws and regulations pertaining to joint ventures with foreign companies are, from the international investment prospective, evolving slowly, but positively. This positive trend is continuing under the current government reform process, which is moving China towards a freer market economy. Although improving the enforcement of relevant laws and regulations is an ongoing process, the environment for mineral investment and joint ventures is increasingly more accommodating to foreign companies.

Islais Creek Contract E, a transport/storage tunnel in San Francisco, was visited on a fieldtrip during construction by delegates to the 1995 RETC. This paper is a follow-up to that fieldtrip. The project’s two tunnels are 3.7 m and 3.2 m finished diameter, 155 m and 77 m long, respectively. The contractor used 1,000 overlapping jet grout columns to pre-treat the weak Bay Mud along the tunnel alignments, then mined them with an open faced tunnel shield, eliminating the need for compressed air tunneling. This paper documents the jet grouting program and the tunneling operation used on the project.

What is your personal view and assessment of the overall health of the industry in the current global economy? The economic outlook remains soft for the near future and, although the global economy is showing signs of recovery, uncertainty has tempered the pace of recovery. In addition to uncertainty, we are still facing significant economic challenges in many parts of the world, including Europe and the United States. The rapid expansion of China?s economy has recently slowed, further contributing to the sense of uncertainty in the overall health of the global economy. This situation is both a blessing and a curse, depending on which sector of the mining industry we are considering. For example, coal, industrial minerals, aggregates, base metal and precious metals markets are impacted by different forces and drivers and will experience different outcomes within the same economic environment. Let me give a few concrete examples to illustrate this concept. The prevailing economic uncertainty that I have just described tends to drive investors toward safe havens. Gold has historically been viewed as a safe haven and as long as investors shy away from traditional investments, gold prices will remain high and gold mining companies will continue to expand and invest capital in their operations. The same sluggish economy that drives gold prices higher has the opposite effect on other segments of the minerals industry. A great example of this is industrial minerals and aggregates used in construction. The markets that consume these minerals have contracted significantly over the past five years. The outlook for this segment is poor, as the glut of available housing continues to inhibit demand for new construction and, thus, many industrial minerals. In addition to this, the federal government?s lack of political will to enact long-term legislation funding transportation and infrastructure projects continues to be a drag on the U.S. aggregates industry.

The Jamestown Mine is a 6.3-kt/d (7000-stpd) open-pit gold mining operation located in the central portion of California's historic Mother Lode district. Most early production from the Jamestown area occurred in underground operations from 1906 through 1916. Pit production began at Jamestown in early 1987 and continued until July 1994. Although additional mineral resources existed, they were deemed to be uneconomic. About 23.3 t (750,000 oz) of gold were produced from pit operations, compared to 31 t (100,000 oz) from early underground mining. Recent operations at Jamestown included two open pits, a flotation mill and a flotation tailings facility. Flotation concentrates were produced in Jamestown and shipped to Yerington, NV for cyanide leaching in a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit.

Each year, haul truck accidents account for a large portion of mining injuries and fatalities. To better understand why these accidents continue to occur, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) utilized a cognitive task analysis methodology to identify the user requirements of surface haul truck operators and assess differences in perceptions between operators, managers, health and safety professionals, trainers, and maintenance personnel. Additionally, researchers used the critical decision method to focus on better understanding the cognitive demands, decision-making, and problem solving during nonroutine incidents. The preliminary results of this study identify and explore themes within the broad categories of hazards, skills & expertise, and training and provide detailed accounts of nonroutine incidents such as near-misses, loss of control, and collisions. These accounts reveal insights into operator decision making and event progressions that can then be used to build more realistic training scenarios and address hidden hazards and root causes of these incidents. These results, along with potential solutions offered by study participants, can inform future research and help identify creative interventions that can be used by mine operators to address haul truck safety issues

"Due to new technological developments, automatic sensor based sorting has made progress within industrial minerals, precious metals, diamond, and coal mining in recent years (Lessard et. al. 2016). In order to re-introduce the technology to other mining sectors, this research discusses its application to iron, manganese, and zinc ores through test works performed by the authors. These test works were performed using Dual Energy X-ray Transmission (DE-XRT) sensor technology. In each case, pre-concentrations of the ore were created demonstrating the possibility to reduce waste material, energy costs, and water consumption while improving product quality of the ores. INTRODUCTION Sorting of mining ores is as old as mining itself (Salter, 1991). Sensor based sorting applications in coal mining began as early as the late 19th century (Louis 1928). New sensor technologies were developed and implemented sequentially for uranium, nickel, coal, and gold mining (Refining, 1949, Rose et al, 1950, Bloomfield et al, 1966, Clayton et al, 1987, Robben and Mosser, 2014). While these sensor technologies were developed decades ago, computational capacity to keep pace with the vast amount of information required utilizing the sensor technology did not arrive until recently (Lessard et. al., 2016). The sensor based sorting (SBS) process was effectively described by Salter and Wyatt in Minerals Engineering in 1991, and Wotruba and Harbeck in 2010 in the Ullmann’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry under Sensor Based Sorting. Both descriptions include the following key steps: 1. Presentation of the material or particles. 2. Examination or detection of the material or particles. 3. Processing or analysis of the data generated. 4. Physical separation of the material or particles by external means. Effective presentation of the material or particles is achieved when the sensor is capable of identifying each particle individually. This step requires that each fragment of the material be isolated, and it often involves acceleration of the material fragments by chute or mechanical means, as well as the spreading of particles by vibratory feeders (Salter and Wyatt, 1991, and Wotruba and Harbeck, 2010). The isolated particles typically are conveyed into an area wherein they are subjected to electromagnetic irradiation (except in cases of some radioactive ores), either in the form of x-ray, visible light, infrared, or other energies. A wide range of applications for sensor based sorting exists in the literature. The majority of applications fall into one of two camps, (1) pre-concentration of mineral ores, or (2) characterization of the material during processing (Buxton and Benndorf 2013). While there is much to be gained from in-line material characterization and the resulting control both of quality and processing, this article focuses primarily on the camp of pre-concentration of mineral ores."

A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

The methodology of quarrying changed significantly in the Indiana limestone industry in the 60 years between Sept. 11, 1941 and Sept. 11, 2001. The former was the date of the Pentagon groundbreaking ceremony, while the latter was when the building was damaged by American Airlines Flight 77. So too, though to a lesser degree, did the machinery and methods used to fabricate the stone. The rededication ceremony on Sept. 11, 2002 marked the end of the Phoenix Project, as the rebuilding effort was named. The story of this remarkable project illustrates what the American construction(and Indiana limestone) industry can accomplish when working toward a common goal.
