The art of diamond beneficiation has given way to the application of scientific process, but at considerable capital expenditure. The shift in beneficiation methodologies has been disruptive to the traditional skills set of the industry, but evolutionary change continues and has been beneficial to the quality of the final product.

"Portions of the Icy Cape placer Au district have been described and exploited since the early 1900s. Industrial studies of Au-bearing garnetrich intervals established a 3.5 million troy ounce resource in the western half of the district. This estimate is not compliant with CIM and SME definition standards for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. We note high variability in the textures of sediments and their heavy mineral (HM) content and composition in the district, probably as a function of the depositional environment. Sediments are medium- to fine-grained sands with a valuable HM assemblage that averages 26.0% in a range of 1.1– 72.6%. Valuable heavy minerals (VHMs) garnet, magnetite, ilmenite, rutile, and zircon, but excluding Au, average 7.9% in a range of 1.0–37.6% of the HM assemblage. Trace quantities of uraninite, thorite, monazite, xenotime, and others are noted. Garnets have an average Y content of 726 ppm with a range of 0–2150 ppm. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence confirms compositions commensurate with Ca, Al, and Mg silicates. We provide empirical analytical data and note high variability in the textures, HM content, and compositions as a probable function of depositional environment. Icy Cape District land and resources are owned by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority and managed by the Trust Land Office (TLO). The Southern African region contains abundant gold tailing heaps that are an environmental concern due to dust pollution and chemical contamination of nearby water bodies. Nevertheless, these heaps contain gold with potential to be extracted for financial gain. In this study, the feasibility of extraction of gold from a Witwatersrand gold tailings using glycine was investigated using a two-level full factorial design. Effects of variables such as glycine concentration at levels of 0.5–1.5 M with a solid–liquid ratio of 50–200 g/L were investigated. Although the solid–liquid ratio used in this study was below the industrial norm, it provides a starting point for investigating the applicability of this technology. To enhance the gold extraction, potassium permanganate pretreatment and copper ion addition were adopted. The results revealed that 91.4% gold extraction was achieved after 24 h pre-treatment of the tailings using 2 g/L potassium permanganate followed by subsequent leaching using 1.5 M glycine at pH 12, with 50 g/L solid–liquid ratio and 2 g/L copper ions. Statistically, the solid–liquid ratio and potassium permanganate pre-treatment of the tailings were found to be significant at 95% confidence interval, whilst interactions of copper ions and glycine concentration were significant factors. The work demonstrates that potassium permanganate pre-treatment prior to glycine leaching of low-grade secondary gold resources, such as tailings, can be beneficial. Furthermore, the methodology developed in this work provides an opportunity for further investigation of the recovery of gold hosted in complex mineralogical matrices.

ABSTRACT: Settlements above fractured crystalline rock masses are rarely observed and in the past, geotechnical engineers would not expect substantial subsidence to occur in association with a deep tunnelling project. However, recent high precision levelling measurements along the Gotthard pass road in central Switzerland, have revealed up to 12 cm of subsidence along sections that pass several hundred metres above the Gotthard highway tunnel. Large-scale consolidation resulting from tunnel drainage and pore pressure changes in the rock mass are believed to be the contributing mechanism. This paper presents results from an extensive numerical modelling study focussing on the processes responsible for this subsidence. Results derived from 2-D discontinuum (i.e. distinct-element) and continuum (i.e. finite-element) modelling show that both discrete fracture deformation (i.e. fracture closure and shear) and poro-elastic consolidation of the intact rock matrix equally contribute to the observed magnitudes and shape of the surface subsidence trough. RÉSUMÉ: Des tassements aux dessus de massifs cristallins sont rarement observés et par le passé les géotechniciens ne prévoyait pas de subsidence significative associée avec des projets de tunnel profond. Cependant, de récentes campagnes de nivellement haute précision le long de la route du Col du Gotthard (Suisse centrale), ont mis en évidence des subsidences atteignant 12 cm sur des sections passant plusieurs centaines de mètres au-dessus du tunnel routier du Gotthard. Le mécanisme invoqué pour expliquer ce phénomène est la consolidation à grande échelle due au drainage du tunnel et aux variations de pression de pore dans le massif rocheux. Cet article présente les résultats d’une modélisation numérique intensive mettant l’accent sur les processus responsables pour la subsidence. Ces résultats obtenus grâce à des modèles 2-D discontinus (p. ex. éléments distincts) et continus (p. ex. éléments finis) montrent que la déformation sur des fractures discrètes (fermeture de fractures, cisaillement) ainsi que la consolidation poro-élastique de la roche intacte contribuent également aux magnitudes et aux géométries de subsidence observée en surface. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Beachtliche Oberflächensenkungen in einem kristallinen Gebirge, deren Ursache im Vortrieb eines mehrere hundert Meter tiefgelegenen Tunnels liegt, wurden bisher nicht erwartet und beobachtet. Dennoch wurden nach dem Bau des Gotthardstrassentunnels, entlang der Gotthardpassstrasse Oberflächensenkungen mit einem Maximalbetrag von 12 cm bei der Auswertung von Präzisions-Nivellements entdeckt. Dieser Maximalbetrag wurde in einem granitischen Gneis gemessen. Die örtliche Übereinstimmung zwischen dem maximalem Senkungsbetrag und dem maximalem Wasserzufluss zum Tunnel, und die zeitliche Abfolge von Tunnelbau und auftretenden Oberflächensenkungen lassen hydromechanisch gekoppelte Prozesse als Ursache dieser Gebirgsverformungen vermuten. In dieser Arbeit werden die Ergebnisse ausgedehnter prozessorientierter numerischer Simulationen präsentiert. Resultate aus den 2-D Diskontinuum (d.h. distinct-element) und Kontinuum (d.h. finite element) Simulationen zeigen, dass beide Verformungsmechanismen, d.h. an diskreten Brüchen und der intakten Gesteinsmatrix, gleichbedeutend für die beobachteten Senkungsbeträge und der Form des Setzungstroges verantwortlich sind.

Mud houses are common structures in most South African rural homes closer to the mining operations. Fulltime dwellers in these properties are often the elderly. The mine codes of practice and the South African legislative instruments attempt to define the damage criteria to limit the effect of the blast-induced noise and ground vibrations to different structures. All these assessment criteria are based on the peak particle velocity and noise generated during blasting. The South African safe limit criterion that was adopted was initially derived from the international standards, which were then used as a local guideline. This paper evaluates the currently adopted safe limit criteria used in South Africa for a mud house, currently rated at 6 mm per second and 120 decibels to134 decibels, for blast-induced seismicity and noise, respectively. Further, a study was performed on a residential house near a coal mine (5.26 km) based in Mpumalanga following numerous complaints by the owner, launched at the mine and to the Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources. The aim of the study was to measure the magnitude of blast-induced triggers experienced at the aggrieved homestead and to establish if there is a likelihood that an irritation or damage may be caused by these triggers. The seismometer was installed at about 2 m from the mudhouse, from 1 July 2022 to 31 of July 2022. Five blast-induced triggers were recorded during the period showing an average of 0.09 mm/s and 121 decibels for blast-induced seismicity and noise, respectively. The results obtained indicated a maximum seismicity of 0.15 mm/s. This seismicity was below the perceptible vibrations obtained from daily home activities such as walking, jumping, and door slamming, which produce 0.8 mm/s, 7.1 mm/s, and 12.7 mm/s, respectively. Seismicity was therefore not likely to have caused any annoyance and or damage. For noise, the results indicated a maximum of 123 decibels and an average of 121 decibels from five events recorded. A literature review suggests that slight damage may occur when airblast frequencies match the natural frequencies of structures at 120 decibels. Based on these results, it can be concluded, therefore, that the noise, rather than seismicity, is more likely to be the cause of damage to the structure assessed. For improvement, a new approach is proposed based on relating the safe limits to the structural and human response.

Additive manufacturing can be used to produce complex and custom geometries, consolidating different parts into one, which in turn reduces the required number of assemblies and allows distributed manufacturing with short lead times. Defects, such as porosity and surface roughness, associated with parts manufactured by laser powder bed fusion, can severely limit industrial application. The effect these defects have on corrosion and hence long-term structural integrity must also be taken into consideration. The aim of this paper is to report on the characterization of porosity in samples produced by laser powder bed fusion, with the differences in porosity induced by changes in the process parameters. The alloy used in this investigation is AlSi10Mg, which is widely used in the aerospace and automotive industries. The sample characteristics, obtained by X-ray tomography, are reported. The design and production of additively manufactured parts can be improved when these defects are better understood.

You probably haven't all had the opportunity of reading it, but you very soon will. I found it interesting to note that the results predicted were surpassed in the operation of the plant to date. The actual results obtained are significantly good, I think. Any process which, in this country, increases production and decreases costs, is to be welcomed, particularly when it is so necessary for South Africa almost to bend over backwards to utilise every avenue available in order to increase the scope of the production for overseas' markets, of her metallurgical and mineral potential. In lighter vein-and there is no reason why we should always be so serious-I am glad to see that, in a scientific journal like this, such words as the American word 'crud' which I have been picked out about so often, because my grandchildren use it, is now given an aura of respectability. Chile is the main producer of copper in the world and lately the mining industry has suffered challenges due to the lack of water in the north of the country, along with the new policies of not using fresh water for the industry. This has prompted the use of seawater as an alternative source for mining. Several studies have been driven due to this new scenario, which have shown that seawater can be beneficial, if certain ions are removed from the process. This is the Mg that generates precipitates at high pH, that have been shown to make mining operations difficult. In particular, thickening operations are impaired by the presence of Mg ions, where aggregate formation and sedimentation decreases substantially. Our studies suggest the competence of the precipitates in adhering to the polyacrylamide (HPAM) flocculant and not towards the surface of the quartz minerals. This motivates the present work to use molecular dynamics to study the adsorption of a HPAM molecule on quartz surfaces and the surfaces formed by Mg precipitates. The surfaces are immersed in a saline solution or seawater that includes the HPAM molecule. Results are obtained by measure the adsorption frequency and duration. We obtained that the HPAM molecules are preferably absorbed on the surfaces of magnesium hydroxide. This gives us a good agreement with what is observed experimentally and strengthens the premise of the competition of hydroxide with the flocculant. The goal of the study described here is to develop objective. quantitative methods for estimating the outcome probabilities of exploratory oil wells. The study employs the 're-experience' approach, in which historical data are used in a manner which attempts to recreate the past. Our past experience, of course, is the principal guide to the future. To appraise present-day oil prospects, however, we must analyze prospects that have been drilled in terms of how these former prospects were interpreted before they were drilled. An analysis of how they are interpreted after they were drilled is an inadequate guide to the future because our hindsight knowledge is superior to our foresight knowledge. Objective calculation of future outcome probabilities, then, requires that we attempt to treat past information in a manner analogous to that in which we must treat present information in forecasting future outcomes.

The 2101 lean duplex stainless steel has wide potential application in storage, heat exchangers, and in the oil and gas industries. This work investigates the electrochemical behaviour of 2101 duplex stainless steel with an addition of 0.15 wt% ruthenium, using potentiodynamic techniques in 1M H2SO4 at 25º, 40º, 60º, and 80ºC. The microstructures of samples were characterized using optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the ruthenium addition moved the corrosion potential of alloy 2101 to a more positive potential. All samples containing ruthenium displayed longer passive regions at 25°C and 80°C compared to those without ruthenium. Alloys without ruthenium had higher critical current density (icrit) values when compared to the alloys with ruthenium. Ruthenium additions decreased the passive current densities and inhibited anodic dissolution. At room temperature the corrosion rate of alloys with ruthenium was lower than these without ruthenium.

The development of newer and improved electrical products has led to an increase in the rate at which older products are discarded as waste. The main focus of electronic waste is the printed circuit board (PCB) because of the inherently high value of contained metals such as gold and copper. Several options for treatment of the non-metallic fraction including material recycling, where the residue may be used as inclusions in concrete or asphalt materials with minimal processing or chemical recycling, where chemicals and fuels are produced from the residue using pyrolysis exist. In this paper, the utilisation of the non-metallic leached PCB waste fraction as reductant in secondary copper smelting was investigated. Analysis of the leached residue revealed that PCB is highly amorphous and has a carbon content of 28.5%, an oxygen content of 23.1%, with the ash and volatile matter contents 40.1% and 44.8% respectively. Thermodynamic simulations of secondary smelting of copper were conducted in terms of metal recovery, and the energy required when PCB was used as a reductant. The results were also compared with that of coal and PCB-coal blends. The simulations revealed that as PCB in the blend used as reductants increases, the amount of energy required for the smelting operation decreases. Metal recovery slightly decreased as the mass percent of PCB in the blend increased due to lower carbon content present in PCB relative to coal. The results also highlighted the energy saving with PCB-coal blends which was around 160 kWh per ton of feed relative to coal. The decrease in the amount of energy required for the operation is attributed to the higher volatile content of the PCB, which is also a part of the reduction process. Contribution by W.D. Ortlepp In the Journal of May 1994, the authors first presented the concept and analysis that formed the basis for a design approach for deep tunnels, now expressed more explicitly in the present paper (March/April 1996). In a contribution in the Journal of March/April 1995, I expressed a certain disquiet about the validity of their original approach. The authors responded to these criticisms in the same issue. It is apparent to me now that both the contribution and its rebuttals were written, probably for different reasons, in such an obscure and pedantic way as to further confuse the reader rather than provide enlightenment. My concern still persists. But in order to avoid further confusion I will attempt to pose my uncertainties and difficulties in a much more direct way. It is a great honour to officiate at the celebration of the centenary of the South African Institute of Mining and Metalurgy. Tonight's festivities bring back happy memories of my association with South Africa's mining industry during my tenure of office as Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs. They also remind me of the illustrious personalities who have preceded me on this podium. The Pioneers They include Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, who spoke in 1909 on the eve of the Union, General Smuts, and, on many occasions during the 1920s and 1930, Jan H. Hofmeyr. The basic issues addressed by them continue to enjoy the Institute's attention today, namely the optimal and safe exploitation of our country's mineral resources and cost-effective extraction of minerals from their ores. Translated into the Institute's key objective it reads: To initiate and give effect to the means whereby the requirements for technology and scientific knowledge if the minerals and metals section if the South African economy is satisfied.

Anionic surfactants, such as oleic acid and sodium oleate (OLE), and cationic surfactants, such as dodecyl amine-hydrochloride (DDA), are used as flotation collectors of spodumene. However, recovery is poor even if activating ions are used because gangue minerals are also activated. Some reports demonstrate that OLE/DDA mixtures act as a selective collector to enhance spodumene recovery. From mostly macroscopic tests, it has been argued that anionic OLE and cationic DDA form electroneutral complexes, which are adsorbed on the mineral surface through chemisorption; however, no molecular evidence has been presented. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms of the collector mixtures remain mostly unknown. It seems necessary to first study the behaviour of these surfactants confined in salt solutions, to determine auto-associations when they are pure and cross-associations when mixed, the transition from monomers to micelles, and the structure of the micelles and the effects of pH, temperature and concentration. In this paper, ab initio calculations are first used to determine the surface charge distribution of OLE and DDA separately. Then molecular dynamics simulations are used to determine the conformation, aggregation, and diffusion of these pure and mixed surfactants in freshwater and saltwater with the ionic strength of seawater in a pH range. In particular, it is interesting to determine the various associations that result in mixtures of both surfactants and the impact of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations on the structures formedp. Cations influence the order of the structure and orientation of water dipoles, reducing the mobility of water, ions, and surfactant molecules. This knowledge is critical to improve the molecular understanding of the adsorption mechanisms on minerals. Keywords: Computer simulation, molecular dynamics, flotation, collectors, saltwater

The geometallurgical concept has mainly been applied to primary ore deposits, starting from ore characterisation to the economic optimisation of the mining operation. However, as primary ore resources are becoming depleted and lower in grade, alternative sources need to be explored and a question of adaptability of the geometallurgical approach to the secondary resource repositories arises. The particle size distribution, chemical and mineralogical compositions of the Smaltjärnen historical tungsten tailings from physical separation in Yxsjöberg, Sweden were studied using drill core samples collected from different locations within the tailings repository in order to assess the amenability of the tailings to reprocessing. The tailings are dominated by the –600 to +149 μm particle size fraction. This fraction contains most of the elements of interest (W, Cu, S, Sn, Zn, Be, Bi and F) hosted by scheelite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, cassiterite, danalite (both Zn and Be), bismuthinite and fluorite, respectively. The particle size distribution and mineralogical composition vary across the repository, suggesting a possible existence of geometallurgical domains, which require further assessment to evaluate metallurgical performance. Waste dumps are widely used to discharge stripped mine wastes in open pit mining methods. As mining progresses, the height of the waste dumps will increase gradually, which may induce sliding failure once the height exceeds a critical value. Therefore, estimation of the maximum dumping height is crucial to the life-cycle use of a waste dump. However, published information about the maximum height of mine waste dumps are extremely rare. In this study, the maximum dumping height is estimated based on the strength-reduction technique by numerical simulations. The influences of dump geometry and properties on the maximum height are investigated. The results show that the maximum dump height decreases as the dump slope inclination angle α or the unit weight of dump materials γ increases, but decreases when the shear parameters of dump materials (cohesion c and internal friction angle ϕ) increase. The maximum height starts to increase with the ground inclination β when shear failure occurs at the interface between the dump and the base. Furthermore the effects of the dump width B, Young’s modulus E, and Poisson’s ratio μ of dump materials on the maximum height are almost insignificant. Good agreement was found between numerical results available in the literature and those obtained in this study.
