The Bureau of Mines has successfully developed and tested a machine for spraying sealant onto coal mine roof and ribs. Dry material is transported pneumatically to a water-adding nozzle designed to provide dust-free spraying while being nonplugging and self-cleaning. The machine is self-cleaning, 35 inches in height, and capable of applying l/2-inch-thick coatings at over 1,000 ft2/hr.

The heats of formation of anhydrous ferric sulfate and anhydrous indium sulfate were determined by solution calorimetry. At 298.15° K the heats of formation from the metal, rhombic sulfur, and oxygen were -615.6 ±O.7 kcal/mole for ferric sulfate and -649.6 ±O.6 kcal/mole for indium sulfate. Heats of decomposition at 298.15° K are given for the reaction that forms metal oxide, sulfur dioxide, and oxygen) and for the reaction that forms the metal oxide and sulfur trioxide.

Data or input files are used to describe the mine's ventilation system and physical characteristics necessary for ventilation calculations as well as the physical or mechanical disturbance to be modeled and simulated Data files are organized into lines of categories or groups of information Each line contains multiple sets of information or data items Data lines are read by the program, and the data items provide information to the program variables The data file is in American Standard Code for Informa¬tion Interchange (ASCII) format, sometimes called a DOS text format Creation or modification of a data file is accomplished with text editor software Most word pro¬cessors are also capable of making the required ASCII type files A sample data file and its associated output are included in appendix B. "It is well known by all who are familiar with the oil industry in America that the oil pipe line is as fundamentally a part of this industry as the railroad is of most other American industries. The oil pipe line was first introduced about 56 years ago, and since that time has so demonstrated its superiority as a means of carrying crude oil froze the well to the refinery, that this method of transportation has largely superseded all others. This has made possible the building of refineries in or near the large consuming centers, rather than at the wells, which are usually remote from the centers of population.The pipes for conveying the oil are laid on the surface of the ground, or at a depth varying from 18 inches to 3 feet beneath the surface, and the main lines are generally eight inches in diameter. The oil is forced through the pipes by means of pumps operated either by steam or by internal combustion engines. The pump stations are located from 1 1/2 to 90 miles apart, varying with the condition of the country through which the pipe lines extend, and the viscosity of the oil to be handled.Some of the larger pipe-line systems and hundreds of miles in length. It is estimated by the U. S. Geological Survey that the total mileage of oil trunk lines in the United States today is approximately 34,000, and that the gathering systems, which are a fundamental part of the trunk systems, aggregate about 11,500 miles in length, making a total of 45,500 miles.Using those figures as a basis, some general conclusions as to the investment represented will be made. At the time most of the lines were constructed, the average cost per mile based on eight-inch pipe was about $6,500. The cost of the average pump station at that time varied from $130,000 to $250,000. The cost at the present time, on account of the increase in price of labor and materials, would be much in excess of these figures. The fixed investment in pipe lines is, therefore, very extensive. It corresponds closely with the actual cost of the property, and is estimated to be approximately $500,000,000."

The Bureau of Mines evaluated short-delay coal mine detonators manu-factured by three domestic companies for electrostatic sensitivity, strength, and no-fire current level. Electrostatic sensitivity was studied in pin-to-pin and pin-to-case modes employing lO-kV potential. Strength of detonation was measured in the Bureau's underwater test fa-cility. No-fire current was measured using a constant-current power supply unit. Test procedures and experimental data are included.

Illinois No.6, a high-volatile B coal of low fluidity, was blended with fluidized-bed char and coke breeze to improve the strength of the coke obtained from carbonizing this coal. Twenty-one tests, selected from those made in the small-scale Hanson carbonizer, were carbonized in the BM-AGA 13-inch-diameter, cylindrical retort, with a coal charge of about 90 pounds; the strength of the cokes was determined by the standard ASTM tumbler test. Using the same procedure, 10 tests were made with High Splint, a high-volatile A coal from Harlan County, Ky. Carbonization of the blends produced larger and stronger cokes than did the Illinois No.6 coal singly. The optimum blend contained 6 percent each of char and coke breeze. Further improvement in coke strength was realized by either preheating this blend prior to carbonization or by adding a small pro-portion of a premium blending coal. The former method could possibly eliminate the use of premium coking coals in blends with Illinois No. 6 coal to make an acceptable metallurgical coke. Except for no improvement in coke strength by preheating, results for High Splint coal showed behavior similar to that of the Illinois No.6 coal.

The basic mining law of Cuba is contained in the basic Spanish mining decree having the effect of law December 29 , 1868. This legislation has remained substantially unchanged , with the exception of a few minor administrative changes made by the present Government . These changes provide for the register of mines , oil wells , and operations of such nature , and also provide for the keeping of records showing the value of minerals taken out . By Royal decree of April 17 , 1883 , the law of mines enacted for the Peninsula ( Spain ) on July 6 , 1859 , and the General Bases of December 29 , 1868 , were declared in force in Cuba . In order to encourage the mining of iron org , in 1883 the Crow of Spain issued a royal decree to the following effect.

Near-optimum parameters were determined by the Bureau of Mines for vapor deposition of rhenium on heated copper substrates by hydrogen reduction of rhenium hexafluoride (ReF6). High-purity deposits of nearly 90-percent theo¬retical density were obtained with the reaction chamber at 250° C, with an H2 to ReF6 volume ratio of 25 to 1, and with an ReF6 flow rate of 5 grams per hour. Some rhenium deposited as a loose, black powder. When the established near-optimum parameters were carefully followed, this could be minimized but never completely avoided. Varying the reaction chamber pressure, both above and below atmospheric, yielded excessive quantities of rhenium powder. Deposition efficiencies, based on only the coherent metal, ranged between 70 and 75 percent. Massive deposits contained only spectrographic traces of impurities. The average microhardness (Knoop, 100-gram load) of vapor-deposited rhenium was 907. Limited research on the deposition of rhenium-tungsten alloys by reduction of the mixed hexafluorides produced deposits in which linear composition gradients were pronounced; this nonhomogeneity was attributed to the wide variation in optimum hydrogen-reduction temperatures of the two hexafluorides (250° C for ReF6 and 550° C for WF6). Using deposition temperatures between 250° and 550° C did not eliminate the composition variations.

This paper describes a gas-transport method for measuring vapor pressures of liquid metals. Vapor pressures of iron and nickel were determined at temperatures between 1,540° and 1,620° C. The results can be represented by the following equations: log Pmm (iron) -19,460/T + 9.147, log Pmm (nickel) -2l,030/T + 9.689. The study was undertaken as part of a program to determine thermodynamic activities in liquid iron alloys.

The Bureau of Mines and the University of Illinois investigated surface characteristics and damage to structures from mine subsidence over a room-and-pillar coal mine in Hegeler, IL. Data on three adjacent subsidence sags and associated structural damage were collected, summarized and evaluated. The subsidence sags developed over a 10-year period and took place above a modified room-and-pillar operation mining the Herrin (No. 6) coal at a depth of 130 to 135 ft. Surface vertical displacements of 3.0 to 3.5 ft resulted from extracting 6.1 to 6.4 ft of coal. Ground movements associated with sag formation severely damaged three houses and a radio station building, broke numerous utility lines, and structurally distorted three radio transmission towers. The radio station was remodeled and the towers repaired, but the three houses were subsequently demolished. Surface waters collecting in the subsidence depressions caused failure of radial ground transmission systems. The following subsidence profile characteristics were determined at the radio station and one of the houses, respectively: profile slopes, 0.02 and 0.07; maximum curvatures, 2.3 x 10-4 ft-1 and 3.0 x 10-4 ft-1; and angular distortions, 6.6 x 10-3 and 62.0 x 10-3. Although the house was more severely damaged than the radio station, both structures are classified as severely to very severely damaged.

The Bureau of Mines conducted column-leaching tests on 25 domestic Mn ores to determine the feasibility of extracting Mn by in situ or heap leaching with dissolved sulfur dioxide (S02) solutions. The ores tested were obtained from deposits in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado. Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, and South Dakota. Dissolved S02 was found to be effective for leaching Mn; extractions greater than 90 pct were obtained with solution application rates of 1 mL/min from uncalcined, minus 2.5-plus 1.3-cm ore pieces. Leaching these ores with solutions containing only 5-wt-pct S02 and no added H2S04 resulted in Mn being selectively extracted over Fe except when Fe was present as goethite or siderite. Ca solubilization was inhibited by controlling the solution application rate (1 mL/min). The rate of leaching was found to be principally dependent upon the rate at which the leaching solution can penetrate the ore, since the solubilization of Mn upon contact with S02 was observed to be rapid. Despite low water permeabilities of the ores (as low as 10-2 to 10-4 darcy). greater than 90 pct of the Mn was extracted from even the largest ore pieces tested (approximately 10 cm in diameter). It appears, therefore. that leaching Mn opens up the pores, allowing penetration of the leach solution into the ore pieces.

"The Phosphate Rock Market:Indications, in the fertilizer market, point to a prosperous condition, caused chiefly by the growing demand for all classes of fertilizer material in spite of a shortage of supplies. Both of these conditions have been caused by the war. The shortage in phosphate rock is being relieved as production increases, but the supply has not caught up with the demand for this spring's trade, at least. Reports from Florida are to the effect that more than half the necessary quota of laborers are at work. This may not appear to be a very good showing, but even this situation is en¬couraging because there is a larger force now at work than has been the case for some time, and it is steadily, though slowly, increasing. Some of the producing companies are conducting advertising campaigns to get laborers back to the phosphate fields and attractions in the way of better housing and living conditions are being offered.Producers are far more confident about the situation than they were two months ago, and though the shortage will not be met before the end of 1920, theme is a surplus accumulating over what is going out on existing contracts.Quotations are now being offered on all Florida rock excepting land pebble and this, it is expected, will be soon quoted.Quotations on Florida rock per ton are as follows:"

"These proceedings consist of papers presented at a Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminar on postdisaster survival and rescue research. Several seminars are held each year to bring the latest results of Bureau research to the attention of the mining industry as quickly as possible.INTRODUCTIONThe postdisaster research program is directed toward research and development of technology and equipment that increases the chances of a miner surviving or being rescued after an underground mine disaster. A disaster is an accident of major proportions, and it may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal egress from the mine is cut off. This often necessitates a rescue operation and a means of keeping the trapped miners alive while they await rescue. The Bureau is currently pursuing research to develop the technology that will enhance the ability of miners to survive such an occurrence. The research is divided into two basic problem areas, survival and rescue. Both areas are concerned with the inability of miners and rescue teams to cope with the postaisaster environment, such as toxic gases, unstable roof conditions, water flooding, and lack of oxygen. In addition, research is also conducted to find ways of locating and quickly reaching trapped miners. Most of the research conducted by the Bureau has been directed toward the postdisaster problems associated with coal mines. However, most of the research results are also applicable to noncoal mines as well.The papers presented in these proceedings address some of the recent research conducted by the Bureau of Mines that has been directed toward the postdisaster problems outlined above. The topics covered range from an overview of the technology developed for oxygen selfrescuers to training programs for mine rescue. Any questions or comments pertaining to this research are encouraged and appreciated. The breakage of rock by explosives depends largely on the ability of an explosive to transfer its stored potential energy to the rock as strain en- ergy. Therefore, the relative rock-breaking abilities of explosives can be determined indirectly by determining the relative amounts of strain energy transferred to the rock at the time of detonation. This report presents experimental data on the strain energy contained in explosion-generated strain pulses in a granite gneiss. Six explosives were tested. The scaled total radial strain energy E/W flowing outward through a spherical shell of scaled radius R/W1/3 surrounding the point of detonation was found to follow an exponential decay propagation law of the form Analysis of the data showed that the intercept parameter H depended upon the type of explosive used but that the absorption coefficient B was practi- cally independent of the type of explosive. Comparison of the intercept pa- rameter H and the calculated energy of the explosive showed that the percent- age of explosive energy transferred to the rock increased linearly as the ratio of the characteristic impedance (product of density and propagation velocity) of the explosive to that of the rock increased toward unity. From 5 to 9 percent of the calculated total energy released by the explosive was transferred to the rock as radial strain energy.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of organic binders as substitutes for bentonite in agglomerating iron ore concentrate. Over 30 organic binders were evaluated at several dosage levels in laboratory tests. The binder groups producing the greatest green pellet strengths were natural gums (guars carboxyl methyl celluloses) and gelled starches. The nongelled and alkalized starches, starch acrylic copolymers) wood-related products, and dairy products were less effective but better than bentonite. The highest wet pellet drop numbers were obtained with binders that had a medium plate water absorption value (>500 and <10)000) in distilled water and a high slurry viscosity (>75 cP) at 6 pet solids. The highest dry compressive strengths were obtained with binders that gave the highest adhesive tensile strength (>4 kg/ cm2) on iron oxide lap-joint substrates. Pellets with 0.1 pct organic binder had lower compressive strengths and reduction disintegration indices than those with 1 pct bentonite, but higher reduction rates. Pellets with carboxyl methyl cellulose and gelled starch had higher softening temperatures than those with bentonite. Overall, the most promising binder is gelled starch. Its price makes it more cost effective than carboxyl methyl cellulose, and its pellets have metallurgical properties superior to those of bentonite pellets.

During the last three years the use of ethylene glycol dinitrate4 (E.G.D.) as at low-freeze (L.F.) agent in place of nitropolyglycerin has become common in the manufacture of explosives of the dynamite type. The usual proportion of D. G. D. in the explosive "oil" is 25 per cent; the remainder, 75 per cant, is regular nitroglycerin. These proportions were probably selected as a continuation of the practice of 25 per cent nitropolyglycerin and 75 per cent regular nitroglycerin.

The Mitchell and Berea sands were cored and logged in Fred Link well K-l, Lower Newport field, Washington County, Ohio. Core and reservoir fluid analyses and available field data were studied to determine if these sands could be successfully waterflooded. The results of the study indicate that there is insufficient oil in place to form an oilbank in either the western Mitchell pool or the Berea sand, and that no commercial recovery of oil by waterflooding can be obtained in these reservoirs.

"This paper presents an analysis of preliminary tests on the effect of in-situ and operating parameters on fragmentation of coal using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). In these tests coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 18 in. x 15 in. x 6 in. (45.7 cm x 38.l cm x 15.2 cm) were first. subjected to confining pressures, equivalent to in-situ conditions. Such. blocks were then cut by the cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as 1) penetration of bit into coal, 2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), 3) rotating velocity of cutting head, and 4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photographed and a velocity survey was conducted by using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using an optical microscope with a camera attached to it. Furthermore, the coal fragments were collected in bags using a vacuum cleaner. These fragments were then sieved for size distribution analysis. The results of the preliminary tests indicated that underground coal cutting can be simulated in the laboratory and the effects of the important parameters, i.e. operating and in-situ parameters, can be studied successfully. INTRODUCTIONThe continuous-mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners, which were designed for increased productivity, have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. As a result, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted to enforce on the coal operators that the airborne respirable dust not exceed 2 mg/m3, and was intended to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis. This plus the other aspects of the legislation and the subsequent monitoring and enforcement by MSHA made it very imperative that the coal operators provide a relatively healthier and safer working environment for the coal miners. Since 1970, the Federal government has paid over 11.7 billion dollars to more than 470,000 miners with coal workers pneumoconiosis and their survivors (1). These regulations, coupled with the assessment of the continuing burden on miners, the mining industry and taxpayers appear to have provided an impetus for the mining .community towards comprehending the different parameters that influence dust generation and entrainment."

Coal miners, especially roof bolter and continuous miner operators, work in a hazardous underground environment where they are often exposed to poor roof conditions. Nearly 500 rock fall injuries are reported each year, and 99% of them are caused by rocks falling from between the roof bolts. These loose rocks that injure miners are usually just a few inches thick, but on average weigh 280 pounds. NIOSH has found that most rock fall injuries can be prevented by installing roof screen during the bolting cycle. Roof screen is a sheet made of steel wires in a grid pattern. When screen is bolted up against the mine roof, it provides far more coverage than any common surface control used in the mines today. Because more mine roof is covered, there is less chance that a rock will fall and injure a miner. The facts about roof screen are shown in the new NIOSH video entitled “Make It Safer With Roof Screen.” Using extensive underground footage, the 7-minute video shows how well screen keeps loose rock from falling in difficult roof conditions. Techniques for installing screen from both outside-controlled and walk-thru roof bolting machines are shown. The video also provides safe handling tips, best practices, and information about machine technology that can greatly improve material handling. Throughout the video, a coal mine safety manager and a shift foreman talk about the tremendous difference that roof screen has made at their mines. An instructional booklet supplements the video with additional information. It presents compelling data from mines that have practically eliminated rock fall injuries with a roof screening program. Other sections of the booklet discuss in greater detail roof screen installation, tips for manual screen handling, a material handling system for roof screen, and use of the personal bolter screen, which can be easily handled by one person. Screen specification and custom ordering are described, including the sizes of screen, grid sizes, reinforcing (indicator) wires, edge cut options, and screen strength. A list of additional sources of information is also provided. Nearly every mine eventually encounters poor roof. Screen is one of the most powerful control techniques available. This new video will help make mine managers aware of screen, and it can help them in developing a roof screen installation program. It also serves as an information source and teaching tool for safety managers and trainers. The video can easily be integrated into new miner training programs or annual refresher training.

Low-temperature heat capacities and standard enthalpy of formation of copper difluoride (CuF2) were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The low-temperature heat capacities were determined from 11 to 302 K by adiabatic calorimetry. The enthalpy of formation was determined by HC1 solution calorimetry. The standard values of entropy (S°) and enthalpy of formation (?Hf°) at 298.15 K are l8.65±0.03 cal/deg mole and -129.02±0.29 kcal/mole, respectively.
