"This study reports a new property of the important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes, glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin- NADP oxidoreductase, that can catalyze a one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V). During the enzymatic reduction process, molecular oxygen is reduced to H2O 2 , which reacts with the reduced metal complexes to generate hydroxyl radicals. Since the hydroxyl radicals have been suggested to play an important role in Cr(VI) toxicity, this study provides a basis for a recent observation that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent. These results also point to an enzymatic pathway for the metabolism of some metal ions and concomitant generation of hydroxyl radicals. l. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this communication is to report that some important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) can catalyze one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V) and simultaneously reduce molecular oxygen to generate Hi02 and, eventually, the ""OH radical. This finding is significant because (i) the known substrates for the flavoenzymes are organic species and not metal ions, and (ii) the report on the enzymatic formation of the ""OH radical provides a new pathway for understanding the mechanism of genotoxicity of some non-ferrous metal ions. For example, it has been suggested that OH radical is likely to be the major species responsible for Cr(VI) genotoxicity [1-5). The 'OH radical is generated through the reaction of Cr(V) complexes with cellular Hi02 [4,5]. Cr(V) itself is known to be generated from Cr(VI) in various biological systems, in particular, microsomes [ 6), mitochondria [7] and mitochondrial electron transfer chain complexes [8]. However, no specific enzyme responsible for the Cr(V) generation has been identified except possibly glutathione reductase [4]. In this study we have used ESR and spin trapping techniques to show that the flavoenzymes can generate Cr(V) and provide a catalytic redox cycle for 'OH formation in such reactions. This publication contains analyses and related source data for 153 natural gas samples from 16 States. Of the total samples, 149 were collected during calendar year 1993. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1993. None of the analyses have been previously published in annual reports. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

An analysis of low-voltage shielded trailing cables is performed to develop a method for calculating the differences in operating costs between shielded and non-shielded cables. Two types of shield constructions are considered (SH-C and SH-D) for the three major underground coal mining methods. Data from laboratory and in-mine testing are presented in addition to an analysis of safety benefits. Recommendations for further investigations are proposed. Example calculations with sensitivity analyses are presented. Recommendations for further investigation include costs impact considerations.

During the summer of 1943 the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and program of churn drilling on the McIlhon and adjoining Pearson land in the Mineral Point district of Iowa County, Wis. Sixteen holes, aggregating 1,570 feet .of bore, were completed. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation of the zinc-and lead-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when great effort was being made to increase the production of Metals important to the war program. The Bureau&apos;s drilling program supplemented a previous drilling pro-gram conducted by the Vinegar Hill Zinc Co., and demonstrated the presence of a strongly mineralized zone at relatively shallow depths.

Calorimetric data for the dissolution of scandium sesquioxide and scandium trichloride in 4.360 molal hydrochloric acid were used to evaluate the standard heat of formation of ScCl3(c). The heat of reaction for Sc(c) + 1.5Cl2(g) = ScCl3(c) at 298.15° K was computed as -225,440 ±340 cal/mole.

The chemistry of selenium and tellurium is discussed , along with a method of preparing a synthetic oilfield brine , an oilfield brine sampling method , and methods for determining selenium and tellurium in complex oilfield brines . Selenium either can be reduced to the elemental form with sulfur dioxide and determined semiquantitatively by color comparison of the red amorphous form or can be converted to selenite and determined quantitatively by reacting it with 3,3 ' - diaminobenzidine and obtaining its spectral absorbance at 420 mu . Tellurium can be reduced to the elemental form with hypophosphorous acid , and the spectral absorbance of its red hydrosol can be measured at 400 mu . Less than 0.05 mg / 1 of selenium and 0.1 mg / 1 of tellurium can be determined by the described methods .

The Bureau of Mines compared the effects of surface-active chemicals with those of pure water on core-drilling rock and quartz and on fracturing quartz. The objectives were to determine if these chemicals assist drilling and fracturing rock and if zeta potential control was worth pursuing as an aid to full-scale drilling. All tests were performed in the laboratory. No significant increases in drilling rates were observed for 1 to 10,000 ppm Al (as AlC13) in flushing water when drilling microcline or serpentine, nor for 1 to 10,000 ppm Mg (as MgC12) when drilling microcline or marble. Concentrations near those giving a zero zeta potential were used with microcline and marble. A 50-pct rate increase was observed for drilling quartz in 0.7 ppm oleylammonium acetate, which gave a zero zeta potential. No other concentrations were used. No effect on the tensile strength of quartz thread in 0.05 ppm Al (as AlC13), which gave a zero zeta potential, was observed. Heptanol, reported to give a zero zeta potential on quartz, did not reduce the bending strength of small quartz bars below that in water. These generally negative findings raise doubt about the usefulness of zeta potential control in full-scale drilling. The results, combined with previous studies, suggest that controlling physical properties of drilling fluids, such as viscosity, is more useful than altering chemical properties.

The DuBois fluorite property in the southwestern part of Hardin County, Ill., has been active intermittently since 1904 and has produced an estimated total of 1,000 to 2,000 tons. The persistence of the vein and the stratigraphy suggested extensions of the ore body formerly mined. The Bureau of Mines investigated the property by core drilling early in 1944. Four holes were bored which totaled 1,106 feet and extended along a strike length of 1,150 feet. The data obtained in the course of the investigation are presented in this report.

This report contains heat-content values for hexagonal crystalline germanium dioxide between 298.15° and 1,350° K., and for germanium dioxide glass between 298.15° and 1,800° K. experimentally determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines. No similar data for these substances are to be found in the literature. The heat-content and corresponding entropy-increment data are presented both in tabular form and by equations. Free energy of formation values are estimated for germanium dioxide glass at 298.15° and 1,800° K.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

"Bit wear has been proven to have a significant effect on respirable dust generation in coal cutting system. The mechanism of bit wear can be adhesion, abrasion. oxidation, or diffusion. depending on cutting conditions. This paper presents a portion of an extensive ongoing series of studies to better understand the principles of bit wear and dust generation. Used bits collected from underground coal mines were analyzed to identify the basic principle of bit wear in coal and rock cutting. Distribution of weight loss and conical height loss of worn bits were studied and bit wear was divided into four stages according to weight loss. Utilizing these worn bits, Laboratory experiments have been carried out to study the effects of bit wear on coal cutting system and respirable dust generation. An Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator was use to perform the experiments. Acoustic emission monitoring is applied to study the effect of bit wear on fracture formation and dust generation. INTRODUCTIONContinuous miners were introduced in the 1950’s and became the major equipment in underground coal production. Now the larger production in the coal industry has increased the demand for continuous miners and their use. It is well known that serious dust problem is also introduced with the use of continuous miners, especially with recent increase in productivity. On the other hand, legal restrictions are made ·more strict by the Mine Health & Safety Administration for the respirable dust generated by the continuous miners to prevent coal workers from incidence of pneumoconiosis. The incidence of pneumoconiosis depends on dust concentration, exposure time, and physical properties of dust. Of them, dust concentration is the best parameter for the assessment of the risk of pneumoconiosis. Although a lot of research work has been done to reduce dust concentration substantially, some areas are still required further investigation to meet the strict regulations. One of the areas is about bit wear and dust generation. In this area, the principles of bit wear and effect of bit wear on dust generation are major concerns."

PRODUCTION of carbon black decreased 4 percent in 1961. Output in the major producing States of Texas and Louisiana decreased 1 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Production of channel black continued downward, declining 10 percent in 1961 compared with 9 percent in 1960. Furnace black production also decreased 3 percent from 1960. Total domestic sales, however, increased 2 percent, Sales to most major consumers increased, but sales to the ink industry decreased 10 percent. Producer&apos;s stocks decreased 5,083,000 pounds during the year. Exports decreased 4 percent. SCOPE OF REPORT Carbon black is a very pure grade of quasi-graphitic carbon; particle diameters range from 50 to 5,000 angstrom units. Annual reports were submitted to the Bureau of Mines by operators of all commercial plants in the United States.

"A personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler has been designed and evaluated in both laboratory and field settings. The sampler uses size selective sampling for the determination of the respirable mass concentrations of mineral dust and diesel exhaust particulate matter found in underground coal mines. This design is based on the premise that diesel exhaust particulate matter is predominantly less than 0.8 um while mineral dust is greater than 0.8 gm. Operating at a flow rate of 2 L/min, the sampler consists of a 10 mm Dorr-Oliver respirable dust cyclone followed by an 0.8 gm cutpoint impactor and an afterfilter. Field evaluations consisted of sampling at 6 different locations in these underground coal mines. Measured aerosol concentration less than and greater than 0.8 um have been compared with a well characterized cascade impactor.Techniques must be developed for measuring the mass concentration of diesel exhaust particulate matter found in underground coal mines due to the health concerns associated with worker exposure to diesel exhaust particulate matter. Diesel exhaust particles are in the respirable size range and have been regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen by NIOSH (1988). Furthermore, a 1988 MSHA advisory committee directed MSHA to develop a sampling protocol for assessing worker exposure to diesel exhaust particles.The University of Minnesota and the Bureau of Mines, over the past 4 years have measured the size distribution of diesel exhaust particles and mineral dust, both in the laboratory and underground mines (Cantrell, 1987; Cantrell et al., 1987; Cantrell and Rubow. 1988; Marple et al, 1986; Rubow et al., 1988: and Watts et al., 1989). To date, measurements have been made in nine coal mines. Seven mines utilized diesel-powered equipment at the mine face while two used electric-powered equipment. The results of these field tests indicate that mineral dust and diesel exhaust particles can be differentiated on the basis of particle size. The measured particle size distributions have been found to be bimodal with a saddle point at 0.8 um. This has led to the hypothesis that one method for measuring worker exposure to diesel exhaust particles would be to collect size fractionated particle samples separated at 0.8 um with the diesel particles being less than 0.8 um and the mineral dust particles greater than 0.8 um.Aerosol size distribution measurements, using a micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI), have been conducted in the mine intake air portal, intake entry to the working section, haulageway, and section return entry. The MOUDI is a ten stage cascade impactor with particle cutpoints ranging from 0.1 to 15 um aerodynamic diameter (Marple and Rubow. 1984b; Marple et al., 1989). The sampling flow rate is 30 L/min."

The reactions of alumina and alumina monohydrate with wet hydrogen fluoride gas were studied by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of producing commercial-grade aluminum fluoride from offgases generated by pyrohydrolysis of siliceous fluorspars. The test results showed than an aluminum fluoride reactor operating at maximum efficiency could retain 96 percent of the fluorine contained in off-gases generated by pyrohydrolysis of siliceous fluorspar. The requirements are a reactor temperature of 200° C. and a reactor entrance gas containing 5 mole-percent hydrogen fluoride. Partial pressure equilibrium constants were determined for the reaction of alumina monohydrate and wet hydrogen fluoride gas from 200° to 350° C. and for the reaction of alumina and wet hydrogen fluoride gas from 350° to 700° C. Both reactions are reversible, and they proceed in directions that are dependent upon the temperature and the relative HF:H2O concentration. Logarithms of the equilibrium constants were used to plot the reaction isobars; these can be used to calculate the theoretical maximum efficiency of a reactor processing wet hydrogen fluoride gas between 200° and 700° C. The theoretical maximum efficiency decreases with increasing temperature.

The Skene mine, in the Elizabeth District, Illinois, produced lead are from 1901 to 1907. Three exploratory holes drilled just north of the mine were said to have penetrated 40 feet of good zinc are. During the summer of 1944, the Bureau of Mines drilled check holes close to what appeared to be two of the three old holes. They also drilled two holes to the south of the mine and one into the core of the deposit. Results of the investigation are given in this report.

The Allah Cooper mine, in Louisa County, Va., formerly was a producer of lead and zinc. It was believed that the critical shortage of leach and zinc and the fact that some ore had been produced at this mine justified exploration of it. A preliminary examination was made on April 30, 1943, by J. E. Hill, a Bureau of Mines Engineer. Diamond drilling was done on the property from November 30 to December 18, 1943, to determine whether the sulfide body extended to depth. One hole drilled to a depth of 650 feet and located so as to cut the Allah Cooper ore shoot about 150 feet below the lowest known mine workings failed to disclose sulfide vein at that depth.

The Bureau of Mines developed a rapid instrumental method of analyzing oil well scales containing primarily barium sulfate. After removal of oil and water by carbon disulfide) the scale was dissolved in strong hydrochloric acid. The cations, barium, calcium, strontium, magnesium, and iron, were determined with the flame photometer using the method of additions. Sulfate was deter-mined colorimetrically after separation by selective adsorption on an alumina column. Phosphate was determined colorimetrically and carbonate titrimetrically. The method was reasonably accurate, although iron and magnesium were found to have mutual interference.

The Bureau of Mines, Foster-Miller Inc., and Beaver Creek Coal Co. have evaluated the ability of a new system to ventilate a 40-ft-deep cut. A remote-control continuous-mining machine, in a 7-ft-thick seam, with exhausting brattice was fitted with an improved sprayfan system plus additional forward and reverse pointing sprays. Static and dynamic tests using tracer gas were conducted in a full-scale model and under-ground to measure the effectiveness of exhaust face ventilation for various deep-cutting mine and spray configurations. When compared to a lO-ft primary ventilation brattice, the extended-cut spray system consistently provided better face ventilation at all configurations up to and including a 40-ft brattice setback. The system also provided good dust protection and visibility for the machine operator. Another safety advantage is the elimination of the need to set temporary roof supports to maintain the ventilation brattice.
