The mass spectra of 23 alkylthiophenes are presented , including 21 that have not been previously reported . Correlations between mass spectra and the structure of the thiophene homologs are discussed . Comparisons with , and corroboration of , earlier workers ' correlations and predictions are made . Several additional correlations are reported to enable the spectroscopist to identify the substituents on alkyl - substituted thiophenes , and the relationship of the mono - substituted and 2,5 - disubstituted alkylthiophenes is discussed in detail .

"INTRODUCTION Clay beds of southwestern North Dakota were investigated to determine (1) the average alumina content of the clays in four principal areas of occurrence, (2.) which, if any, would be the most feasible method of extracting alumina from the clays, and (3) whether the clays had any other commercial uses.During the investigation exposed sedimentary beds were examined for clay and the thickness and areal extent of outcropping clay beds in the more promising areas were measured. Four-principal areas of bentonitic clays, comprising 6,967 acres in Stark, Slope; and Billings Counties, N. Several recent ignitions of firedamp - a mixture of methane and air - in American coal mines have been attributed to frictional heating when hard rocks were struck while cutting and drilling coal seams. Although none of these ignitions caused severe explosions, they call attention to a problem that can become increasingly significant as mechanized mining is developed further. The power in and rapid release of energy from high-speed machinery has increased the rates of advance into virgin coal creating many problems. Unforeseen faults and hard mineral inclusions may be encountered; coal brought down in this way is finer in size; more gas is released from the seam; it is frequently more difficult to provide adequate ventilation at the' face; and new roof-support problems must be solved. In particular, continuous mining machines (also known as continuous miners) greatly increase the frequency of contact between cutter bits and minerals. In view of these conditions, it may be expected that more gas ignitions will occur as a result of frictional heating unless the situation is understood and remedial measures are introduced. The problem of frictional heating is not new in coal mining. In Europe, particularly in England, it has been a concern for more than a century. During the last 15 to 20 years frictional ignitions have been a major cuase of explosions in British mines. Explanations for the greater number of such ignitions in England may be the special character of the coal measure strata, the mining methods, the rate of gas emission and possibly its composition, and less effective ventilation near the face. To reduce the ignition hazard, considerable laboratory and field research has been conducted, particularly by the Safety in Mines Research Establishment, Ministry of Fuel and Power of Great Britain. Much of the information presented in this report has been drawn from these studies.

Work on contract H0272007 is summarized for the period of 1 February 977 to 1 February 1978. The initial evaluation of two potential systems for the location of well casings, voids, and tunnels in coal are described. The pulse measurement equipment used for the evaluation of the antennas selected possible use with a pulse time domain system and an FM-CW system is described. A TEM horn antenna design potentially suitable for use with these systems is given. An operational comparative analysis between various antenna types is presented.

The Bureau of Mines has designed, fabricated, and field tested a water jet cutting device capable of perforating nonmetallic well casings for the purpose of completing or stimulating in situ uranium leaching wells. The device is lowered into the wellbore, where it issues a high-velocity water jet that penetrates either a polyvinyl chloride or fiberglass casing, cement, and from 1 to 4 feet into the surrounding uraniferous sandstone. The resulting perforations allow leaching solution to pass between the sandstone and the wellbore. This report describes the water jet perforator, tells how it is used, presents cost data, and discusses the results of laboratory and field tests. The tests were designed to (1) determine the optimum operating conditions for water jet perforation, (2) assess the effects of changes in these conditions, (3) evaluate the performance of the water jet perforator under actual conditions, and (4) compare this method with other methods of well completion. These tests showed that water jet perforation is superior to conventional well completion methods for selectively achieving communication between the well-bore and adjacent sand while maintaining sand control, for restoring permeability lost through wellbore damage, for stimulating poorly performing wells for completing wells with casings that have inside diameters as small as 2 inches, and for extending the effective well diameter.

4.1 Introduction Using methods outlined in previous sections of this report, programs were written and/or obtained to: i) select best combinations of "a" and "k" for up to 8 different value parameters, ii) calculate available and unavailable ore tonnages and other statistics, and iii) produce contour maps of various parameter characteristics and available tonnages on a line printer. All the above programs are written in Fortran IV for execu¬tion on IBM 360/370 computers. 4.2 Calculation of Coal Reserves The Ore Reserve program suite consists of the following sections: (a) UNIT 1: This unit is a subroutine called by Unit 2 to determine values for "a" and "k" from the given data. (b) UNIT 2: These programs calculate ore reserves and are composed of a main program and several sub¬routines. In the following, their functions are abbreviated: i) MAIN - calls subroutines, reads run parameter variables, reads borehole data and interpolates grid node values for the area of investigation

The Bureau of Mines analyzed vapor-aluminum-diffused stainless steels prior to conducting corrosion measurements in severely sulfidizing environments. These studies were conducted in response to the national need to better control the environmental and economic costs of corrosion. Specimens of a ferritic alloy and austenitic alloys types 316 and 310 were treated by a proprietary vapor-aluminum diffusion process and a dual vapor-aluminum diffusion process. Weights and dimensions were recorded before and after treatment, and comprehensive metallographic, X-ray, and electron micro-probe analyses were conducted for both single-and dual-vapor-aluminum-diffused specimens. Surface aluminum concentrations ranged from 26 to 34 wt-pct for all alloys. Dual treatment increased the quantity of aluminum per unit area by a factor of 2 and increased the depth of penetration by a factor of 3. The aluminum-diffused region of the ferritic alloy was single-phase aFe solid solution that was ordered on the surface, whereas two distinct diffusion layers were ob-served on the austenitic alloys. The outer layer comprised aFe solid solution that was ordered on the surface, and the inner layer was a two-phase mixture of aFe solid solution and the interrnetallic compound AINi.

The fibrogenic effects of silica in experimental animals and humans has been extensively studied (I 7, 20). However, the pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms underlying lung injury and fibrosis resulting from silica exposure remain to be elucidated. It is well-documented that silica can stimulate monocyte-macrophage lineage cells to produce cytokines and growth factors, including interleukin-I (IL- I) (20), tumor necrosis factor-ex (TNF-cx) (I 7), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) (4), and transforming growth factor-P (TGF-P) (24). Consequently, it has been suggested that the fibrogenic effect of silica may be mediated by cytokines in the fater stages of silicosis. During the early phase of interaction between silica and the pulmonary alveolar macrophage, several direct and indirect lines of evidence suggest that reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) may play a pivotal role in silica- induced tissue damage (2I, 22). One of the most important components of and contributors to ROI is nitric oxide (NO) produced from L-arginine and molecular oxygen under the catalytic influence of NO synthase (NOS) (I 9). At present, at least three NOS genes have been cloned: a constitutive neuron NOS, a constitutive endothelial cell NOS and an inducible NOS (iNOS) (16). A number of factors have been shown to differentially induce iNOS gene expression in different cell lines including bacterial cell products and foreign antigens. During inflammation, NO is a double-edged sword in terms of the host immune defense mechanisms and the physiologic response to an inflammatory insult. The macrophage is one of the major cellular sources of NO. During the early phase of acute inflammation, NO produced from the macrophage appears to facilitate the clearance of pathogens and promotes a local relaxation effect on the microcirculation of vascular smooth muscle. When the production of NO is left unattenuated, especially under oxidative stress, direct cytotoxic effects of NO can emerge through the formation of peroxynitrite as a result of a reaction between NO and superoxide (2).

"The use of small such as canaries and white mice, for detecting carbon monoxide depends primarily on the fact that the volume of respiration of these animals in proportion to their volume of blood is much higher than for man. Accordingly, when animals and men are simultaneously exposed to a given concentration of carbon monoxide the animals will absorb it more rapidly and attain serious poisoning in less time than men. Prom a practical viewpoint the use of the animals depends on the margin of time between observable symptoms in them and serious poisoning in man, during which man can return to fresh air or use respiratory protection. It should be remembered, however, that during the time the animal is incurring a detectable degree of poisoning, man is also absorbing some carbon monoxide, and the margin of time is not very wide. Experience with canaries has shown that an occasional specimen may have a tolerance above the average of the species and fail to exhibit symptoms before man incurs a very discomforting and possibly a serious degree of poisoning.It is also well known that physical activity increases the demand for oxygen by the body, and the respiratory exchange and circulation of the blood are increased to meet the demand. This sets up a vicious condition if carbon monoxide is present in the air because the rate of absorption of carbon monoxide is not only increased by the increase in respiration and circulation, but the absorption of carbon monoxide decreases the capacity of the blood for carrying oxygen at a time when the demand is high. These facts, together with the increase in respiration and circulation which attend excitement, underlie the caution to be calm and to walk slowly and to reduce physical exertion to a minimum when exposed to carbon monoxide. For these same reasons, when using animals for detecting carbon monoxide it is endeavored to keep them active, thereby tending to increase the response of the birds and widen the time between observable effects in the birds and effects in the man. As rule canaries are kept fairly active through fright at the unnatural surroundings and in their endeavor to remain on the perch of the cage when carried into the atmosphere to be examined. They also experience an excitement stage with oncoming carbon monoxide poisoning. Sometimes, however, especially if the air is cold, they tend to be inactive and quiet. Ordinary mice and white mice become inactive with use and also with oncoming poisoning. They huddle in the corner or the cage, and thereby not only reduce their sensitivity but make it difficult to observe signs of poisoning."

Data presented on the physical characteristics of the reservoir oil, Aneth field, represent the initial phase of a study of Paradox basin reservoir oils being made by petroleum engineers of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The purpose of the study is to determine the original reservoir-oil characteristics in several important new discoveries in the Paradox Basin and to investigate correlations between the properties of these reservoir oils and structural or areal position within the basin, If migration is limited and oil accumulates near its source, then it seems probable that few differences should be found in the composition and characteristics of reservoir oils occurring in given age rocks and within the confines of a geological basin. Within these limits, conditions that effected the formation of oil and its transfer from parent to storage rocks probably were rather uniform in an area the size of most of our geological basins. However, if oils should migrate considerable distances, it seems logical to expect that the relative quantities of gas and liquid components may differ in traps occurring along the direction of migration, corresponding with the theory of differential entrapment (5).4/

This report, the second of a series, presents the results of laboratory corrosion studies which were made in connection with a one-year test on aluminum lease tanks conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines. Part I of the report contains the results of the field teats.5 The studies were made on an oil lease in a so-called "sour district," near Borger, Tag., where free hydrogen sulphide accompanied the production of oil, gas, and salt water. Steel tanks previously used on the lease had suffered severe corrosion, because steel is inherently susceptible to attack by hydrogen sulphide. Because of the high resistivity of aluminum to the action of hydrogen sulphide, it Was believed that this metal had promising possibilities as a material for the construction of lease tanks in "sour districts." The results of the one-year field teat proved that aluminum lease tanks will withstand corrosion by hydrogen sulphide, but it was found that aluminum was susceptible to attack by salt water, which was invariably present in certain portions of the tanks, and that hydrogen sulphide accelerated this salt-water corrosion in an indirect manner, as will be explained hereinafter. In order to study corrosion conditions encountered in the tanks during the test period, a laboratory was maintained at the site of the aluminum lease tanks.

Large quantities of explosives are consumed in the underground mining of ores in the Lake Superior district. Because of the recognized danger of accidentally releasing the potential highly destructive forces contained, the safes possible procedure in the transportation, storage, and use of explosives is necessary. Underground magazines recently constructed in the district give evidence of the earnest desire of the mine operators to incorporate all possible safe-guards in the storage of explosives, including a careful choice of location and arrangement in the plan of the magazine.

"INTRODUCTION The domestic production of potash has made rapid strides in the past 4 years. In 1929 the United States produced 109,820 tons of potash-bearing material, equivalent to 61,590 tons of pure potash (K20). In 1933 to this had increased to 331,110 tons, containing 143,378 tons of potash, due chiefly to the development of the potash deposits near Carlsbad, N. Mex. The potash ores of that district occur at a depth of about 1,000 feet and as mined consist of a mixture known as sylvinite containing about 40 parts of sylvite (KC1) and 60 parts of halite (NaCl). By careful mining the extraneous material does not amount to more than 2 or 3 per cent. Such ore was used in the experimental work here reported.The usual chemical method for the recovery of potash from sylvinite, while efficient in the production of pure potassium chloride, requires,expensive equipment and is costly to operate. It occurred to the Bureau of Mines that ore-dressing methods, which have been applied to other nonmetallic minerals, might be adapted for the production of a grade of potash suitable for the fertilizer industry. After preliminary study by the Bureau of Mines showed that ore-dressing treatment was possible the investigation was extended under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the Potash Company of America, and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSAcknowledgment is here given for valuable assistance in the laboratory of R. "Helium has great value to the oil and as industry as a tracer gas, according to tests just completed in the Elk Hills Field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, Kearn County, California. When used as .a tracer gas, small percentages of helium are mixed with natural gas pumped into a reservoir for conservation, repressuring, or cycling purposes. Because minute quantities of helium added to natural gases can be detected by analytical methods and accurately determined, the variations of the helium content of gas withdrawn from various parts of a field when helium has been added to the injected gas give interesting and long-sought data on the movement of injected gas through reservoirs.The Bureau of Mines engineers began their studies of the use of helium as a tracer material in gas-injection operations in the Elk Hills, California, oil field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, in response to a request by the Navy Department for assistance in connection with an expanded oil-production program instituted in that field. This report discusses the Bureau's work on the problem of determining the direction and extent of migration of injected gas in the Elk Hills reservoir by the use of helium as a tracer gas,The Bureau appreciates the cooperation and assistance of Commodore W. G. Greenman, U.S.N., director, and Commander R. Walling, U.S.N.R., Assistant director, Naval Petroleum .and Oil Shale Reserves, Washington, D. C., Captain H. P. Oil shale, a potential source of products presently obtained from petroleum, is found in many countries. The most extensive known deposits from the standpoint of potential shale oil in place are those in Brazil and the United States of America. Mining methods used for oil shale range from open-pit operations for shallow deposits to room-and-pillar and longwall techniques for deposits with thick overburdens. Oil shales from different sources vary greatly in the amounts and types of organic and inorganic constituents. By retorting, the organic material is converted to oil, gas, and coke. The largest percentages of oil are obtained from materials having the highest hydrogen content. Over 2,000 retorting systems have been patented, but only a few have been used industrially, and no single process seems best for all types of shales or economic conditions. Shale oils have different characteristics, depending on the source rock and method of retorting. They contain large quantities of olefinic hydrocarbons and more oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur derivatives of hydrocarbons than most petroleums. Consequently, petroleum refining methods usually must be modified for shale oil. This is particularly true in catalytic processing. Hydrogenation, even under mild conditions, improves shale-oil refinability. Several byproducts may be obtained from both the retorting and refining steps.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in July, 1931, as part of United States Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3134, under the title of "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to June 30, 1931." Changes in that list were authorized in August, September, October, November, and December, 1931, and January and March, 1932, as published in Reports of Investigations 3140, 3147, 3150, 3155, 3158, 3161, and 3163, respectively. Three species of chemosynthetic iron- and sulfur-oxidizing autotrophic bacteria have been isolated from the leaching waters of copper mining areas. These species are: The sulfur-oxidizing Thiobacillus concretivorus, the iron-oxidizing Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, and a sulfur- and iron-oxidizing bacterium closely resembling Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, INTRODUCTION Among several suggested new processes for treating marginal ores in the United States, none is more intriguing than the possibility of extracting metals from low-grade materials by the action of microorganisms One phase of a Federal Bureau of Mines investigation toward developing such a procedure was to isolate and identify specific chemosynthetic iron and sulfur. oxidizing autotrophic bacteria native to certain domestic copper deposits where leaching is practiced. The bacteria or microorganisms considered important to this investigation are those capable of producing solutions of ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid. Solutions of this type are excellent solvents for some copper minerals By establishing the presence of these bacteria at certain copper-leaching areas, strength would be given to a theory that microbial activity is partly responsible for the oxidation that takes place at these areas. Their presence also advances possibilities for controlled use of microbial action in metal extraction processes. Leathen4/ has demonstrated that one of the chemosynthetic iron-oxidizing bacteria, Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, can oxidize 200 parts per million of ferrous iron to the ferric state in 3 days,

In an effort to correlate the size of pyrite particles in coal and coal-particle association with the removal of pyrite before burning, the Bureau of Mines conducted a study of 61 coals presently being used for electric power production. The results were obtained by visual microscopic studies of polished briquets of minus l4-mesh samples. Mean pyrite particle sizes ranged from 20 to 400 microns and proportions of pyrite contained in coal particles to an extent greater than 50 percent by volume (estimated) ranged from 20 to 95 percent. These parameters were correlated with reductions in pyrite accomplished by float-sink tests at 1.60 sp gr on 14-mesh, 3/8-inch, and 1-1/2-inch samples. The correlation coefficients between pyrite removal and mean pyrite particle size were 0.89, 0.84, and 0.79, respectively, for these samples. Correlation coefficients between pyrite removal and coal-pyrite association parameter were 0.92, 0090, and 0.85, respectively. It is apparent that extent of pyrite removal can be fairly well predicted from microscopic analysis.

Marshall and Bird have published the results of a cooperative investigation by the Bureau of Mines in which they developed a procedure for measuring the agglutinating value of coal.4 As stated in their paper, the procedure outlined was suggested by the early worn of Richters5 and Campredon,6 whose procedures were hurriedly modified to meet the need of an investigation then in progress. Since the publicatien of that paper, further work has been done in an attempt to show how the variables involved affect the concordance of the results, in order that such results may be obtained in different laboratories. Briefly, Marshall and Bird's method for determining the agglutinating value of coal consists in carbonizing an intimate mixture of 10 parts by weight of sand and 1 part by weight of coal in a porcelain crucible at a uniform temperature of 950° C. in a, vertical, cylindrical, electrically-heated furnace. After carbonization, the resultant buttons are crushed in a testing machine and the breaking strengths recorded in grams. The agglutinating value reported is the average breaking strength of 10 buttons. The coal for the test is prepared by crushing to pass a 100-mesh screen. The sand used as a diluent is sized between 40 and 50 mesh sieves with openings of 0.381 icon and 0.279 millimeters, respectively.

The following methods have been selected from a large number tried while assaying several hundred samples of placer concentrates. It is thought that some of these methods may be useful to those who are required to assay similar products containing large quantities of metallic articles, such as jeweler's sweepings. No great difficulties will be encountered in assaying black sand from beaches or river bars. Such samples require care in grinding and sifting so that no oversize particles of sold or platinum are lost. It is also necessary to have sufficient silica in the flux to form a fluid slag with the excess of iron, magnesium, or chromium Which such samples contain.
