The growing popularity of perlite (sometimes spelled pearlite) as a raw material for thermal expansion into pumicelike products in the Western States has prompted a preliminary investigation of the properties of such material and the problems that want solution to put a perlite industry on a firm foundation. The Bureau of Mines is undertaking the gathering of data and the solution of these problems, and the following paper records some of the available information. and the promise of the material, with some comparisons of advantages of the various competing lightweight aggregates that can be made from siliceous volcanic glasses and rocks containing entrapped or dissolved water that causes their expansion on' quick heating to their softening points. This new industrial rock has caught the fancy of the mineral industry in the western States because it has Fume advantages over natural pumice. Chemically, it is typified as rhyolitic in composition, and one may find obsidian, rhyolite, pumice, pumicite, and perlite from the same vant and contemporaneous in origin. The material need not be rhyolite but should be a siliceous or acid lava and contain 2 to 5 percent water still in "solution" in the rock. On quick heating to the softening temperature the material puffs, due to conversion of the contained eater into bubbles of steam. Slow heating causes gradual release of the imprisoned water by decrepitation and. cracking and-results in, very little puffing. Perlite is often in the form of ovoid volcanic bombs formed by explosive eruption of large masses of lava into the air, where they, quickly cool, with escape of little of the contained water, exceptt perhaps for a hollow interior. Since they cool in layers they have an onion-type structure and a pearly luster from interference of light between the. layers, which is' the origin of the name "perlite." Perlite may occur in intruded flows that have been quickly cooled and partly expanded but retained most of their magmatic water content. Obsidian may be the same lava cooled quickly under conditions that prevented crystallization of feldspars and other minerals, leaving the volcanic glass that may or may not retain all of the original contained water.

The Copper King copper-gold-silver deposit was discovered about 1880. Various individuals and companies have been interested in the deposit and considerable work has been done, although production, if any, has been small. The deposit is located in the western part of Laramie County, Wyo., and is favorably situated with respect to rail and truck transportation and high-tension power facilities. Mild summers and cold winters characterize the climate. Precipitation averages between 16 and 17 inches annually, with considerable snowfall in the winter. Permanent streams are small and most available water in being stored for use by Cheyenne, Wyo. Range grasses comprise the bulk of the vegetation, with small trees and shrubs common in the most rugged areas.

Corundum is a natural alumina (A120 ) and is next to the diamond in hardness . Except for the gem varieties , it is used principally as an abrasive , chiefly in grinding , dressing , and polishing metals and optical glass . Natural corundum is preferred to artificial abrasives for certain specialized jobs . Most of the corundum ( excluding emery ) mined in the United States came from the Corundum Hill mine in North Carolina and the Laurel Creek mine in Georgia . The Corundum Hill mine provided over half of the domestic production of corundum prior to 1900. Since 1900 , the importation of foreign corundum and the manufacture of artificial abrasives caused the decline of corundum mining in the United States .

The Bureau of Mines used a diphenyl ether calorimeter to determine the heat contents of natural and synthetic blast-furnace slags. For solid slags, enthalpy (HT-H298) at 1,448° to 1,680° K ranged from 282.1 to 348.5 cal/g (±3 percent); liquid slag values were 400.1 to 514 cal/g (±3 percent) in the temperature range between 1,626° and 1,890° K. Experimental results for liquid slags were 14.3 to 16.2 percent higher than the enthalpies calculated from thermodynamic tables; values for solid slags ranged from 5.3 percent lower to 3.9 percent higher than calculated values. Experimental results for liquid synthetic slags ranged from 14.9 to 24.3 percent higher than the calculated enthalpies; values for solid synthetic slags were from 1.0 to 3.4 percent higher.

The Bureau of Mines devised a technique to recover a Zn-Pb concen-trate from a geothermal brine. More than 99 pct of the Zn and Ph was precipitated by treating the brine with H2S and controlling the pH with lime. Recycle of the sulfide precipitates increased crystal size and resulted in easily filterable products. A typical sulfide precipitate contained 53 pct ZnS, 8 pet PbS, 24 pct MnS, and 15 pct FeS. Addition of sulfide as FeS or CaS was not effective in precipitating Zn and Pb, but Zn in the brine was selectively removed with a strongly basic ion-exchange resin. A proposed flowsheet for metals recovery is discussed.

Rock falls in coal mines cause many injuries each year. Most of these injuries are not caused by major roof collapses, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate top or roof skin. Even though safety professionals and mine operators strive to reduce these types of injuries, there has not been a substantial decrease in the rock fall injury rate over the past decade. Various surface controls are used in mines to control the roof skin. One control that has proven to be very effective is roof screening. Roof screen effectively controls roof skin and provides a high roof surface coverage. Although many mines are reluctant to use screen for primary skin control because of the additional costs of time and materials, others are having great success at controlling both the costs and surface rock. In this study, injury data are presented that show a dramatic reduction in roof skin injuries when screening is used. Much of this success is due to the protection from falling rock that the operators receive from roof screen. Five case studies in which roof screen was used are presented along with the associated costs of materials, impact on bolting advance rates, and potential ergonomic risks. The effects of roof screening on skin control and safety are also included. Finally, this paper provides information about best practices and features of roof bolting machines that affect production and safety.

This research was conducted with the objective of suppressing the respirable dust in coal mines by foam application. A formulation was developed for making a water-based, high-expansion, and limited stability foam. A horizontal boring machine was used as a laboratory coal mining model for generating coal dust. A modified laboratory foam generator was built. Foam was applied directly to the point at which dust was being formed by the cutter of the boring machine working against a block of coal. Coal dust was sampled with an impinger and analyzed for the particle count and particle size distribution. Coal dust suppression test results on freshly generated dust have demonstrated very clearly that in laboratory scale experiments over 90% of the respirable coal dust can be suppressed by foam. These tests were run when initial coal du t concentrations were 10 and 70 million particles per cubic foot (mppcf).

Simple treatment methods, employing the least possible equipment, can sometimes be established for marginal ores and economical results achieved. In continuation of a long-established part of the hydrometallurgical and ore-dressing program of the Reno Station of the Bureau of Mines, typical ores from newly discovered or recently explored mining districts have been investigated. The purpose of such investigations is to encourage the search for and development of mineral resources and particularly to assist in the economical exploitation of low-grade and marginal ores, as well as the conservation and recovery of values in products from former operations that were discarded because of past inability to treat them economically. Several of these investigations have been limited to preliminary tests of samples from prospecting operations, whereas some involved samples of old dumps or tailings piles. The test, work in these cases was not extensive enough to warrant publication as individual reports, but is of considerable interest inasmuch as it indicates the possibilities as well as the limitations of treating the respective materials; and because, inasmuch as the samples were representative of the districts from which they were obtained, this in-formation should be helpful in the future development of these districts. The present report is a compilation of results of brief preliminary tests on oxide ores only, which contained gold and silver and in some cases base metals. The methods of treatment used include gravity concentration, amalgamation, flotation, and cyanidation. For the most part, only standard laboratory procedures were employed. No attempts were made to develop new methods for the low-grade refractory ores in this group of samples if simple treatment was not successful, as the stage of development of the properties did not warrant extensive experimentation on the samples submitted.

Comprehensive world mineral industry investment data do not exist, but limited material published on aggregates of in vestment in some elements of the world mineral industry suggest a continued up-turn in the investment level, at least in market economy countries in 1989. Steel industry investments in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries are not yet available for 1989 but, as shown in table 6, increased by 22.1% in 1988, after showing a decrease of 5.2% (revised) in 1987. The pattern of investment ups and downs varied during 1988 within country blocs and economic alliances showing no particular trends. Investment in the steel industry by the United States increased by 58.3% between 1987 and 1988 and was 1 1.9% higher than the previous highest amount invested during the 1984-88 period but was still 41.5% less than the amount invested in 1983. Investment in the steel industries of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) dropped again in 1988 from the revised amount for 1987, which became the first drop after several years of steady growth in what became the expanded ECSC in 1986. This drop in 1988 was the result of lower investments by Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Nether- lands, and Spain, investments grew or remained level in Belgium, Portugal, and the United Kingdom in 1987 and 1988. A decrease in investment in the Canadian (-26.6%) steel industry was offset by in- creases registered by the members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) of 31.7%, by Japan of 19.8% by Turkey of 22.4%, and a slight increase by the nations of Latin America. If data for the world steel industry as a whole, including those of the centrally planned economy countries, were available, the same pattern presumably would be shown as that reported; that is, it would remain fairly stable, with increases in some countries being offset by decreases in others. However, the lack of comprehensive information on the centrally planned economy countries makes it impossible to determine whether the overall trend was up or down despite recorded increases or decreases in production of the materials involved. In situ leach mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the are formation. Swelling and dis-persion of clay particles in the formation are often responsible for this permeability loss. Permeability and leaching tests were done in the laboratory on clayey ores to evaluate a clay-stabilizing polymer's effectiveness in preventing these problems. Test results indicate that treating the ores with the stabilizer could maintain permeabilities two to five times greater than the long-term permeabilities present in untreated ores. Both alkaline (pH 8.5) and acidic (pH 2.0) leaches were used in the permeability-leaching tests. Since in situ leaching throughput rate is directly related to permeability, these results also indicate a potentially beneficial effect on operating parameters such as capacity and injection pressure. To determine the reasons for the success of the clay stabilizers, an investigation was conducted to cieter-mine the effect of the stabilizer on clay swelling and dispersion. Clay-swelling tests indicated that the clay stabilizer reduced clay swelling. Zeta potential measurements made on fine clay particles treated with the stabilizer were compared to measurements made on untreated particles and indicated that the stabilizer was electropositive and, therefore, could reduce the degree of negative charge on the particles and their tendency to disperse or migrate.

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. The year 1916 broke all previous records of mineral production in the Territory. As a consequence, there has been a noteworthy increase in the number of mines in active operation or under development, though the greater part of the increased output is the result of greater activity at mines already producing rather than of opening new mines. Owing to available funds not being sufficient to meet the cost of travel in the interior of the Territory during the winter months, the Federal mine inspector was unable during the spring to visit the placer mines of the interior as has been his custom in the past. However, by working in close cooperation with the Territorial in- spector, who left Juneau in June to take the first boat down the Yukon to Fairbanks after the spring break-up, it was possible to visit hurriedly all the larger mining centers of the Territory. The Territorial inspector covered the districts from Fairbanks to Nome and the Federal inspector covered those of southeastern and south- western Alaska. A number of applicants have begun mining coal on ground held under free-use 10-acre permits, and have furnished coal for local use. The larger leasing units in the Bering River and Matanuska coal fields have been advertised and applications for leases have been submitted. These applications came too late in the fall for active development to begin before the end of the year. The Government railroad has been built from Anchorage to the center of the Matanuska coal field, and private interests have under- taken the building of a standard-gage road from a point known as Goose City on Controller Bay to Canyon Creek, in the Bering River field. Capital has become interested in the oil fields on Controller Bay, and plans have been made for more active exploration and production. The work of the Federal mine inspector is still handicapped by the lack of funds for additional field assistants and of the office ac- commodations necessary for carrying on the work with the efficiency that its importance warrants.

From the most remote periods of civilization stone has been used to perpetuate the memory of individuals or to immortalize their noble achievements. Ancient memorials ranged from simple piles of stone (cairns), or single markers, to great obelisks and pyramids or magnificent mausoleums. The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, built of white marble by Shah Jehan in memory of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and costly memorials ever built. It was erected between 1632 and 1650 at an estimated cost of $50,000,000 or more and is today an object of unusual interest for travelers. Other magnificent memorials both ancient and modern are to be found in many lands. No sharp line can be drawn between buildings and monuments, because the larger types of memorials such as the Bok Singing Tower, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, and mausoleums of various types have features in common with buildings. However, great care must be exercised in selecting a site for a quarry that will produce acceptable monumental stone because appearance as well as quality is of prime importance. The deposit must be of uniform texture and attractive color and must be notably free of knots, hairlines, impurities, incipient seams, or other defects. Many memorials are of polished stone, and spots or streaks that might be virtually Invisible on a natural rock face will appear distinctly on a polished surface. Hence, stone to be polished must be selected with unusual care. However, less flawless stone may be used for hammered surfaces.

"It has been recently suggested that the exceptionally high antitumor and antibacterial activity of natural fredericamycin A (FMA) is related to its ability to spontaneously generate the superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (""OH) radicals in aerobic solutions [Hilton, B. D., Misra, R., & Zweier, J. L. (1986) Biochemistry 25, 5533]. With a view to understand the mechanistic details, attempts were made to reproduce earlier electron spin resonance (ESR) evidence for the oxygenated free radical formation in well-aerated solutions of natural FMA in dimethyl sulfoxide and dilute H 20 2• Little or no evidence was obtained for the formation of the 0 2- and methoxy (""OCH3) radicals, while the detected formation of the 'OH and methyl ('CH3) radicals was attributable largely to mechanisms not involving FMA. These results thus reopen the T question regarding the mechanism of its exceptionally high tumoricidal-bacteriocidal activity. This paper reports on an electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the formation of oxygenated free radicals in solutions of natural fredericamycin A (abbreviated as FMA) which has recently been reported to be a highly potent anti¬tumor antibiotic (Pandey et al., 1981; Warnick-Pickle et al., 1981). The impetus for this undertaking was provided by recent reports (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) suggesting that the strong tumoricidal activity with high therapeutic—toxic index of FMA was related to its ability for the spontaneous generation of superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals. For example, the suggested mechanism for the formation of 02- by FMA was (Hilton et al., 1986)FMA-OH + O2 FMA-O + H+ + 02-Here FMA—OH is simply the FMA molecule emphasizing the —OH moiety which becomes FMA-O, the free radical rep¬resenting the oxidized form of the drug. While some other highly effective anticancer drugs in current clinical application, such as bleomycin, are also thought to exert their antitumor effects via the formation of reactive drug-based or oxygenated free radicals (Carmichael et al., 1985; Gianni et al., 1983), FMA was considered unique in that only in this case the free radical formation was thought to be spontaneous, rather than through a metal- or an enzyme-activated process (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986). Thus it was suggested (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) that FMA could be the forerunner of a new class of anticancer drugs. However, we noted that while the hypothesis seemed plausible, the reported ESR spectral evidence appeared to be ambiguous. Because of the high significance of the earlier conclusions (Stinson, 1986), we undertook a systematic ESR study of the radical formation in FMA solutions, and as discussed below, our conclusions disagree with those reported earlier."

Respirable dust provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 are designed to protect the most important resource of the coal mining industry--its workers. The Act imposes two respirable dust standards of 3.0 milligrams per cubic meter of air after June 30, 1970; and 2.0 milligrams per cubic meter of air after December 30, 1972. Under Federal regulations, each operator is required to carry out a dust sampling program established by the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, This program features the sampling of "high risk" face workers to establish that the exposure of each miner is below the dust standard, Mining sect ions, continuously in compliance with the regulations, may sample at less frequent intervals. In addition to requiring the mining company to take respirable dust samples, the Bureau of Mines will perform in-depth dust inspections twice a year, as well as frequent "spot inspections." The Bureau has established a semiautomatic computerized operation capable of processing over 1 million samples per year. This facility will be linked to various Bureau offices by a telecommunications system to provide automatic data printouts within hours after samples have been weighed.

The Crewstation Analysis Programs (CAP) is a package of computer programs that can be used to analyze some human engineering aspects of crewstation design (such as visibility and illumination) that have particular significance in underground mining. It was developed under the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Health, Safety and Mining Technology program at the Pittsburgh Research Center, Pittsburgh, PA. This manual describes the steps necessary to collect data in the laboratory to develop luminaire profiles for the CAP illumination analysis. It also describes how the CAP Illumination Model calculates illumination. 1.1 How CAP Calculates Illumination 1.1.1 Background -CAP currently includes assessments of visibility and illumination in the surrounding work area. The advantage of using computers for these types of analyses is that many design iterations can be tested quickly and efficiently to learn the effects of changes. This reduces the need for expensive testing using physical mockups. Another advantage is that design ideas can be tested in situations where it would not normally be possible. For instance, the effects of modifications to a lighting system or canopy design on visibility could be tested while the machine remains in service.

External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle inter-action with organic collectors and thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200-to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode to examine the potential distribution in the bed. The dissolved oxygen concentration of the electrolyte had a significant effect on the potential profile across the mineral bed. Low oxygen levels were necessary to achieve uniform electrochemical potential distributions. Flotation separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture by controlled potential was achieved using ethylxanthate, but the flotation behavior of chalcocite and pyrite from the mixture does not follow the flotation behavior of the individual minerals. That is, the presence of another sulfide mineral alters the flotation behavior with ethylxan-thate. Galvanic interaction due to mineral-to-mineral contact between chalcocite and pyrite contributes to differences in the recovery. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on pyrite flotation by activating flotation below -0.1 V (saturated calomel electrode) and depressing flotation above -0.1 V. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

A theoretical study of the heat-transfer characteristics of a dilute gas-solids mixture in an externally heated tube is reported. Detailed equations are developed describing the system, and a numerical method is presented to solve the equations using a digital computer. The methods are applied to a system containing fine coal particles entrained in hydrogen, flowing through a hot tube. Heat-transfer coefficients and several other physical constants are evaluated in detail.

This paper has been written to aid the owner of a small gold mine or prospect in preparing a report on his property for the purpose of interesting capital. If an owner can afford to do so, he should employ a mining engineer of recognized standing and experience to examine and report on his property, but many owners of small -mines and particularly of prospects cannot make the expenditure required for this. Further, many of them do not know how to prepare a description which will cover those features of a deposit on which a potential investor promises his opinion as to its worth. If such an owner is convinced that he possesses an orebody of sufficient grade and size to warrant the required expenditure for a thorough investigation and wishes to present his property to prospective investors, then the following suggestions concerning the proper way to sample his deposit, estimate the tonnage of developed and probable ore, and prepare a report may be of assistance.

SUMMARY Dresser, in Polk County, is 3 miles south of St. Croix Falls, Wis. Company operations are about 1 mile north of the townsite. The mine has been in [peration] since 1914 and under the present ownership since 1949.
