Shale roof deterioration in coal mines. caused by ventilation air humidity fluctuations, is a common ground control problem. Shale roof deterioration often results in increased accidents, decreased production, inadequate ventilation, and increasing operating costs in maintaining haulage roads and airways. The results of Bureau of Mines research indicate that air tempering entries are an effective method of controlling deterioration prone shales. Some of the conclusions and recommendations drawn from Bureau research include (1) moisture sensitive shales will react adversely to moisture gains and losses, (2) the majority effect of specific humidity fluctuations can be concentrated in and absorbed by tempering entries, (3) tempering entry panels should be located as near to the main intake as possible, (4) tempering panels should be designed for a conservative recovery and provide a minimum of 20-to 30-min air residence time, (5) ventilation and escapeway requirements must be considered early in panel design, and (6) an efficient support and sealant plan can increase the life expectancy of a tempering panel.

Hydraulic fluid power systems are advantageous whenever power output must be accurately and safely controlled. The load movers, cylinders, jacks, rotary actuators and hydraulic actuators in these systems can be made to smoothly and accurately start, stop, reverse, hold position or move steadily under heavy and variable loads or torques. Because hydraulic systems are simple, compact, reliable, and low cost compared to other power methods and because they can deliver controlled power anywhere on the machine to which a hose can be routed, they are a pan of almost every type of machine found on a coal mining section. Some of the functions they perform are positioning drill booms, driving drill pots on roof bolters, positioning curter booms, raising, lowering, and swinging conveyors, driving conveyors on continuous miners, raising, lowering, and applying sustained loads to longwall roof supports, and advancing the face conveyor and roof supports in longwall mining operations.

This report details the continuation of mine power systems transient research under USBM Grant G0155003. The purpose of the work, which commenced under Grant G0133077, is the elimination of safety hazards created by transients" and the objective is to provide knowledge about transients existing in a-c and d-c coal mine power systems. The report chapters cover theoretical background, instrumentation, and experimental investigations. The instrumentation discussion scans measurement problems and considerations plus the development of a low-cast peak-detector. Transient data from in-mine measurements are presented and include high-voltage distribution and d-c trolley systems. Extremely unique field exercises are described involving actual power equipment connected on the surface to duplicate typical underground coal mine system arrangements. Here, transients on high-voltage distribution resulting from vacuum circuit breaker operations could be observed under controlled conditions, and work centered around how surge capacitors effect transients. Using the in-mine and staged transient data, specific conclusions and recommendations are made with emphasis on high-voltage distribution.

The microstructures of a CF2Br2-inhibited methane flame and its uninhibited analog have been determined using molecular beam-mass spectrometry. The slightly lean flames were stabilized on a cooled porous plug burner at reduced pressure. Composition profiles of stable, intermediate, and radical species and temperature profiles were obtained. Comparisons of the uninhibited and inhibited flame profiles revealed the following inhibition effects; a shift of the primary reaction zone to higher temperatures, a higher maximum flame temperature, an increase in the CH3 concentration, and a reduction in the H2CO, H, 0, and OH concentrations. Kinetic analyses of the data yielded rate coefficients at flame temperatures for the reactions H + CH4 ? CH3 + H2, H + O2 ? OH + O, CO + OH ? CO2 + H, and CH3 + O ? H2CO + H. CF2Br2 is judged to decay by thermal decomposition and abstraction reactions.

That circular dealt with the drilling of the first 12 of the 24 potash tests made by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey; this report is concerned with the drilling of the last 12 tests. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer is indebted to R. E. "INTRODUCTION With the advent of war in 1941, military operations in Alaska were enlarged on such a scale that the demand for coal in the Territory more than doubled. Coal was needed urgently for heating forts and other military establishments, for use on large construction projects, and for handling the greatly increased volume of traffic on the Alaska Railroad. -The additional tonnage required, estimated at perhaps 250,000 tons per year, probably could have been supplied by the United States, but shipping space between Pacific Coast ports and Alaska was already overburdened with military supplies and construction materials. Moreover, although of only secondary importance in wartime, the cost of coal shipped into the Territory is reported to have been as high as $40 per ton. The alternative to importing coal was, of course, to increase the Production of the Alaska mines.Production of coal in Alaska reached, 350,000 tons in 1944, or more than double the prewar' output. The responsibility for increasing coal production was assumed largely by the Army, A Coal Commission attached to the Alaska Department arranged financial assistance for some mining operations, aided the operators in producing equipment for mechanization, and provided most of the labor necessary to operate the mines. The Bureau of Mines contributed to the program in several ways. First, exploration by the Bureau in the Moose Creek district revealed a substantial tonnage of coal of better grade than any currently mined in the Territory, 4/ and drilling in the Broad Pass district, where a mine to supply coal for the army had been started, revealed that the reserves were far less than had been supposed; this operation was abandoned. Second, coal-preparation practices were studied, and recommendations for improvements made, at two of the operating mines at which the quality of the coal makes preparation a factor of vital importance. Some of the information obtained in these studies forms the basis for the present report."

The work involved compilation and description of pertinent factors relating to the physical features and operational characteristics of the facility, including information on embankment construction practices; investigation and research of the general geologic and seismicity characteristics of the site and vicinity; limited field exploration and materials sampling and testing at the site; installation and limited monitoring of piezometers, surface movement markers, and slope indicator casing; limited laboratory testing of materials to evaluate the basic index and engineering properties of the embankment and tailings materials; selected engineering analyses of the embankment for various types of potential "failure" conditions; and includes appendices.

"The Johnny Bull and Silver Knight claims were selected for exploratory diamond drilling after having been examined by the Bureau of Mines 3./The property was considered attractive for two reasons: (1) A prominent outcrop, recognized as an extension of the Tennessee vein, persisted over a distance of 2,000 feet across the claims; (2) its proximity to the known ore shoots in the Tennessee-Schuylkill mine, one of the largest zinc-load producers in Arizona.Actual drilling was started September 18 and was terminated December 8, 1943. Eight holes, aggregating 2,979.5 feet, were drilled with two machines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resource to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. I is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. A field experiment was performed in a production unit of an operating copper room and pillar mine to compare the support capabilities provided by resin and mechanical roof bolts. Resin and mechanical roof bolts were alternately installed in eight intersections in a single entry. Rock mechanics instrumentation was installed to measure roof sag, bed separation, convergence, bolt pullout, torque, and strain. Bolt cost and installation time are included. Two analyses of the test were made. The analysis of the rock mechanics data showed there was no definite difference between the two bolting systems. From a broader analysis on a mine-wide basis it was concluded that resin bolts gave better support. A critical view of the experiment is given in the appendix.

"INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken to determine the response of Birmingham (Alabama) red-iron ore to heavy-medium concentration. Specifically, the work involved a study of the efficiency of the process in separating coarse gangue diluents from the ore and an endeavor to evaluate the potential economic results. The investigative work was not intended, nor is it to be construed, to be adequately exhaustive in scope to enable immediate plant construction. Rather, the primary objective was to determine the grade of ore that could be produced by heavy-medium treatment and the resulting indicative or tentative benefits to be derived from such treatment. The latter, in turn, would determine the merits of the more exhaustive study that would be required for an ultimate decision on the heavy-medium treatment of the ores.The problem of avoiding excessive contamination of red-iron ores by shale and/or ferruginous sandstone has been before the operators of the iron mining industry of the Birmingham, Alabama, district for many years. Within the last two decades, increased mechanization of mining methods has increased this contamination to a considerable degree. In fact, general utilization of scraper loading and other mechanical methods of mining, in conjunction with small increases in the natural insoluble content of the ores, in some cases has actually resulted in the production of ""acid"" or excessively insoluble ore, where ""basic"" or excessively lime ores were produced formerly.The contaminating materials are derived largely from roof spells and natural parting seams in the ore, a condition that to some extent has been aggravated by the irregularity of the ore beds. The latter have been subjected to both primary and secondary folding in many places. Considerable faulting has taken place, also. In many localities these conditions render virtually impossible complete avoidance of ore contamination from the over and underlying sandstones and shales. However, in a few localities, where the ore beds are less disturbed and shale partings are absent, mining can and is being accomplished with relatively little dilution."

Until recent years the term "whiting" was applied exclusively to the water-ground chalks of certain north European countries. In many industries these are still considered superior to the whiting made from domestic limestone and marble. However, the latter material has replaced much of the European whiting in the American market, largely due to improvements in grinding and classification by American manufacturers.4 To encourage the domestic industry, the Bureau of Mines in 1931 undertook a study of the preparation of whiting from American raw materials and a comparison of the finished products with European whitings.

Computer programers are often required to make modifications to unfamiliar Fortran routines. This Bureau of Mines report describes a computer program designed to aid the programer in such a situation by reorganizing: Fortran routines. This reorganization includes a sequential renumbering of the routine's statement numbers, a sequential renumbering, and relocation of format statements, an alphanumeric reordering of dimensioned and typed variables, a uniform pattern of text spacing, and a sequential numbering of the records in the final Fortran routine. The computer program has been extensively tested by the author and has proved to be a valuable tool for reorganizing Fortran routines developed under contract and later utilized by the Bureau, and for preparing routines for publication.

Present information indicates that a copper deposit can be safely fractured with a nuclear explosive and the copper successfully recovered by the in-situ leaching method. The process is not yet at the stage where it can be presented t ) the mining industry as a technique proven in all its aspects, but it is a method with high success potential. Unknown factors must be evaluated by a full-scale test before the economics or the extent of the use of the method by the mining industry can be predicted. Preliminary calculations indicate that the cost of fracturing a copper deposit nuclear explosives may range from l.8 to 55.2 cents per ton or in some case: less than a cent per pound of recoverable copper. Copper may be recovered at less cost than by conventional methods. Deposits with 4 pounds of recoverable copper may be economic and production from a deposit may begin in less than half the time required for conventional methods.

This Bureau of Mines report describes 2nd evaluates iron ore resources in California and Nevada and analyzes the California and Japanese iron ore markets in which these resources will be used. The competitive position of California-Nevada ores, in these markets, was estimated by comparing regional iron ore prices, production costs, and transportation costs with those of foreign suppliers. Resources were determined to be sufficient to produce the equivalent of 585 million tons of 64-percent iron pellets at a price of less than $15 per ton delivered at California ports. Much higher tonnage could be produced at higher prices. Iron ore requirement of the California iron and steel industry will increase to an estimated 15.9 million tons by the year 2000. A study of the iron ore production potential of California-Nevada deposits and of out-of- State sources indicated that this ore requirement can be supplied most economically by California-Nevada ores. Iron ore import requirements of the Japanese iron and steel industry will increase to an estimated 150.0 million tons by the year 2000. A study of price trends in this market indicated that very little California-Nevada iron ore will be sold in Japan after 1973 when existing sales contracts expire. Iron ore-exports might be economically possible if ore could be transported from California to Japan at ballast rates as backhaul on existing petroleum shipping.

The serious shortage of domestically produced asbestos during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate reported asbestos deposits in Alaska. The most promising' appeared to be these in the Cosmos Hills and Jade Hills areas along the Kobuk River in northwestern Alaska. The deposits along the west side of Shungnak River, a tributary of the Kobuk River, were the first to be investigated by the Bureau, in the summer of 1944. Four bulldozer trenches were excavated, from Which a 2-ton sample was taken. This sample was shipped to Rolla, Mo., for testing in the Bureau of Mines laboratory. In the summer of 1945 an investigation of asbestos deposits on Cosmos Creek, also a tributary of the Kobuk River, was begun; the work was completed during the field season of 1946.

"One of the main functions of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, as authorized by Congress, is to investigate safety and health conditions, to disseminate information regarding safe and unsafe practices in mining, and to aid in improving safety and health conditions of mining communities and in promoting the welfare of the miner. Among several methods of reaching the miner and interesting him in safety work, perhaps the most effective is through the 11 mine safety stations and 11 railroad cars known as mine rescue, or more correctly, mine safety cars.Frequently, the Bureau of Mines receives requests for information regarding the purpose, equipment, personnel, and construction of its safety cars used in the field service. It is the intention of this circular to present to the mining public in particular, and to the public in general, some definite information regarding these safety cars and their functions.The cars are operated throughout the mining fields of the United States and are headquartered as follows (see fig. 1): Car 1, Reno, Nev.; Car 2, Raton, N. M.; Car 3, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Car 4, Terre Haute, Ind.; Car 5, Pineville, Ky.; Car 6, Pittsburg, Kans.; Car 7, Huntington, W. Va.; Car 8, Duluth, Minn.; Car 9, Butte, Mont.; Car 10, Des Moines, Iowa; Car 11, Anchorage, Alaska.One of the most important purposes of the U. S. Bureau of Mines safety cars is to render service at mine fires and explosions where human life is endangered. State mine inspectors and other interested persons are supplied with itineraries of the car operating in their districts from time to time, so that they may know at all times where the car can be found in case of emergency. When these disasters occur the car may be reached direct or through its field headquarters, and upon receiving word of a mine disaster, or request for assistance, it immediately proceeds to the scene of trouble. Frequently a special locomotive is supplied by the railroads and in many instances the movement of the car is given the right of way over all other railway traffic. Upon reaching the destination, the facilities and personnel of the car are immediately available for rescue and recovery operations.Following most mine disasters a thorough investigation is made by engineers of the Bureau of Mines, and a confidential report is submitted to the operator. The information gained in this manner from a large number of mine fires and explosions, together with the knowledge gained from the experimental work carried on at the Experimental mine of the bureau at Bruceton, Pa., serves as a basis upon which the bureau is able to recommend preventive measures whereby similar occurrences may be averted. The bureau car is often used as headquarters for the investigating engineer when such an examination is being made."

The disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has been a long-continuing problem to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. An impartial appraisal of conditions pertaining to the problem of brine disposal leads to the conclusion that study of the technical consideration, with proper weight given to the economic and social factors, is the most desirable approach to this problem. Brine disposal is a problem of such magnitude in certain areas in the State of Kansas that in August 1934 a cooperative agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the U. S. Bureau of Mines for a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal.
