This report on the properties of burner-fuel oils produced during 1956 was issued under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. This survey is the second for this type of fuel, the first being made in 1955. 2/ The surveys are conducted to provide information on the characteristics of burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. They are similar in pattern to the diesel-fuel surveys, conducted since 1950, 3/ and are not intended to conflict with but rather to supplement them. The importance of fuel oil has resulted in the need for more information by the petroleum industry, manufacturers of heating appliances, and consumers regarding the types and qualities of the fuels currently being marketed. Samples of burner-fuel oil typical of their manufacture during the early part of 1956 were analyzed by the refiners in accordance with instructions from the subcommittee on fuel surveys of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute, Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied and compiled as shown in the tables of this report.

"INTRODUCTION The tremendous expansion of industry during the war and the unprecedented demands for metals and minerals are reflected in the production and use of explosives during that period. The increased use of explosives brought added safety problems to industry because of the necessity of using men as blasters who were not entirely familiar with and some who were totally unfamiliar with the characteristics of some or all of the various explosives. A discussion of the characteristics of the ordinary types of explosives used in: industry should assist in giving a better understanding of the hazards attending their use. Explosives are compounded so they may be used with reasonable safety provided the user understands and follows the procedure recognized as standard safety practice. Short cuts and the failure to understand and use recognized safe practices, as well as the selection of explosives unstited for the work at hand, are all part of the safety problem,The extent to which explosives are used in the United States is shown by a study of the statistics compiled by the Bureau of Mines 4/ regarding them. Some of these statistics are shown below and serve as an indicator of the tremendous number of men engaged in the transportation, storage, and use of explosives. Theme men are exposed to the inherent hazards attending this occupation and they should be familiar with the recognized safe practices relative to explosives."

"The curtailment of imports of foreign potash during the World War directed attention to the necessity of establishing a domestic source of potash for fertilizer, and considerable study has been given to the subject by Government bureaus, research organizations, and private individuals. These studies have covered all known sources of potash, and among them the extensive greensand deposits of New Jersey in which the potash content is found in the mineral glauconite have been investigated.Several hundred patents have been obtained covering processes for the extraction of potash from siliceous minerals, but up to the present time none have proved successful on a large commercial scale.When the investigation of the potash deposits of Texas was started by the Federal Government, the laboratory study of the drill cores was assigned to the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station at New Brunswick, New Jersey, with the object of ascertaining a possible commercial method of utilization.The purpose of this preliminary study was to investigate existing literature and previous investigations to ascertain the extent and availability of the deposits, the extent of commercial success so far attained in potash extraction, the most promising known methods and by-products obtained from them, probable markets, and possibility of competition with foreign potash, and by a study of these data to determine whether further chemical engineering analysis and laboratory investigation were warranted.As the study advanced it became evident that adequate reserves of green-sand were available for many years supply. and that whereas many processes had been patented few had been tried commercially. The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1932 was 24, a decrease of 6, or 20 percent from the number killed in 1931. The decrease in the number of fatalities occurring in 1932 caused the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry to reach its lowest point in 10 years. Changing conditions in the oil industry - reduced personnel, decreased active field development, and curtailed production - have undoubtedly caused a part of this decrease, but continued accident-prevention efforts by the industry have also contributed to the reduction in the number of fatalities for 1932. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed and reported annually the fatalities in the California petroleum industry for a period of 10 years. Figure 1 shows the trend of fatal accidents during that period. Fatality statistics for 1932 show that the drilling and producing, pipe line and transportation, and refining and natural gasoline divisions of the industry had fewer accidents in 1932 than in 1931, sales and marketing being the only division that showed an increase over 1931. The number of fatalities by divisions for 1931 and 1932, percent of total, and percentages of increase and decrease are given in Table 1.

COAL, salt, lapis lazuli, and construction materials such as lime, gypsum, slate and stone were the only mineral commodities produced in Afghanistan during 1963. Beryl has been produced sporadically. Small deposits of chromite and lead-zinc are known but remained unexploited because there were no domestic markets for the two commodities and transportation costs from Afghanistan to world markets were too high. Oil fields of sufficient magnitude to justify exploitation have not been discovered, but known natural gas reserves are substantial and have potential significance. There is evidence of large high-grade iron ore resources, but these are in an unfavorable location. The contribution of the mineral industry to the economy was small, although precise figures are not available. The reported value of mineral production in 1963 (excluding barite) was 181.6 million afghanis (about US$4 million). Employment in the industry, including cement plants and quarries, was estimated to be no more than about 2,000.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a survey to determine potential exposure of mine workers to dust produced in connection with intermittent rock drilling in coal mines. Eighteen mines in 3 states were visited, and 30 different operations were observed, as follows: 10 drilling in draw slate, 8 drilling top rock for brushing or grading, 2 drilling in the coal face, 4 drilling in the bottom, 2 drilling top rock for overcasts, 2 drilling in faults or boulders, 1 drilling for roof bolting, and 1 drilling for trolley hangers. Dust respirators were worn by drilling crews during 16 of the 30 operations. Three hundred thirty-two samples of air-borne dust were collected during the survey. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The information in this report is based on samples collected and observations made in bituminous-coal mines. Operating officials at these mines have contributed to this study, and their cooperation is gratefully acknowledged. All samples were counted by Thomas B. Kirby, chemist, and Dominick A. "INTRODUCTION During the war period the Bureau of Mines expanded its investigations on western coals principally in connection with Investigations of raw material resources for western steel production. Owing to the expansion of the steel industry, there was some concern regarding the availability of suitable coking coals; end because of the potential steel shortage, the production of sponge iron, using the lower-rank fuels, was considered. Work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines on exploration projects and on testing of coals both at the Central Experiment. Station at Pittsburgh, Pa., and at the Bureau of Mines Station at Golden, Cole.The results of these investigations are being published by the Bureau in several reports of investigations and technical papers. In making this resume of coal investigations, the work done by the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh in the Mining and Coal Carbonization Sections will be discussed and the investigations at Golden described in greater detail.INVESTIGATIONS OF WESTERN COALSThe Mining and Coal Carbonization Sections of the Coal Division, Bureau of Mines, under the supervision of A. L. Teeny es and J. D. Davis, respec¬tively, conducted many field investigations to locate and evaluate new sources of coking coals. Drilling explorations were made in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, and Washington and revealed two important new reserves of coking coal. The first one studied was the Willow Creek bed at Kemmerer, Wyo., which was reported in 1945.3/ A recoverable reserve estimated at 11,200,000 tons was blocked out, and samples of coal were extracted for coking tests. The coking properties of the coal were not quite equal to those of Sunnyside coal, but it was indicated that a 50-percent blend of the Willow Creek with Lower Sunnyside will produce a satisfactory metallurgical coke based on Columbia steel standards."

The Eagle Silver mine is in the Rush Valley mining district, Tooele County, Utah, and is now operated by the Hampton Mining Co. The property, originally referred to as the Argent, is reported to have been one of the first discoveries in the district. The early operators mined ore to a depth of 850 feet, at which point the property was abandoned because of excessive water. During 1905 the Honerine tunnel was driven into the area approximately 1,800 feet below the collar of the Argent shaft. This tunnel served to drain the levels above and operations were resumed. Ore deposits in the Eagle Silver mine occur in the Galena King lime-stone, a 20-to 60-foot member of interbedded quartzite and limestone in the Oquirrh formation of Pennsylvanian age. This member has been faulted along the bedding, forming the Galena King gouge. Mineralization commonly occurs in or near this gouge area in a brecciated, highly altered, pipelike zone. The known ore shoots occur in association with the breccia pipe, commonly adjacent to cross faulting and porphyry intrusions. In general, two ore shoots have been mined on the upper levels of the mine, one lying to the east and the other to the west of the breccia zone. The Bureau of Mines diamond-drilling program was begun during the latter part of 1948 and completed early in 1949. Nine holes were drilled, aggregating 852.8 feet. Sludge and core samples from mineralized sections were analyzed in the Salt Lake City laboratories. A total of 87 sludge, 71 core, and 11 chip samples was submitted for analysis.

During World War II the shortage of ore revived interest in eastern iron deposits, among which -!2..c "Ile Massachusetts and Connecticut limonites. The Cheever mine, in the Richmond-Salisbury area of Massachusetts, was formerly a large producer of limonite ere. The Bureau of Mines investigated the lateral and downward extensions of the Cheever ore body, which was mined from about 1850 to 1892, by ap open cut 1,000 feet long and also by underground workings. even holes aggregating 1,723 feet, were drilled by the Bureau during the winter of 1943-44. They comprised three diamond-core drill holes, two churn-drill holes, and two rotary-drill holes. A geophysical survey of the Cheever mine area and adjoining ground was made in conjunction with the drilling program. Although this survey did not locate the limonite ore beds, the data were of considerable assistance in locating the limestone contact which forms the footwall of the ore beds. Drilling disclosed two beds of limonite with a heavy overburden of glacial till.

The rapid development of transportation facilities in Japan focused the attention of this country on the possibility of converting the existing coal resources (of which there was an abundance) into liquid fuels, for which there was a constantly increasing demand. Previous work had indicated that this could be accomplished by utilizing one of two processes - the Bergius process, in which high temperatures and high pressures were employed to effect direct liquefaction of the coal, and the Fischer-Tropsch process, in which an indirect liquefaction of coal was accomplished by the production of liquid hydro-carbons from hydrogen-carbon monoxide mixtures. This report describes some investigations into the latter process, which was first developed by Fischer and his colleagues in the Coal Laboratory in Muhlheim, Germany, in 1923. By 1932, these investigators had achieved a 60-percent theoretical yield (152 ml. of liquid hydrocarbons per cubic meter of 2H2:ICO synthesis gas) by using a precipitated Co-Th02 catalyst.3/ At the same time (1932), Dr. Kita of Kyoto Imperial University and Messrs. Fujimura and Tsuneoka obtained 145 ml. of gasoline (C5+) per cubic meter of synthetic gas by using a Co-Cu-Th-U catalyst. 4/ This report is a description of the experimental results subsequently obtained at the Fuel Research Institute, Kawaguchi City, Saitama, up to 1935.

Interstitial compounds of iron, cobalt, and nickel, and their binary and ternary mixtures with silver, gold, palladium, and platinum were prepared and tested as fuel cell catalysts. The first step in the preparation of the interstitial compounds consisted of preparing finely divided metals. This was done either by the Raney method or by reduction of precipitated hydroxides of the metals. The finely divided reduced metals were then treated with carbon-and/or nitrogen-containing gases to prepare their carbides, nitrides, and nitrocarbides. The materials were tested for cathodic activity towards O2 and for anodic activity towards H2, C3H8, NH3, CO, and N2H4 in acid and alkaline electrolytes at 25° to 90° C in half-cell assemblies. Samples of carbided and nitrocarbided INi-lAg-1Au were about one fifth as active as Pt-black in the reduction of O2 in 35 percent KOH solution, whereas the activities of several interstitial preparations exceeded the activity of Pt-black in the reduction of O2 in 12M KOH containing N2H4. Nitrocarbides of x-Fe2C, 3Ni-1Au, and 1Ni-3Au were effective catalysts for oxidizing N2H4 in liquid NH3 containing NH4SCN. Corrosion of the catalysts by electrolytes was severe in many cases.

"INTRODUCTION The organic act that became effective July 1, 1910, imposes two very definite primary obligations upon the Bureau of Mines: (1) The prevention of loss of life and limb and the protection of the health of workers in the mineral industries, and (2) the conservation and scientific utilization of the country's mineral resources.The subject of this publication falls within the scope of both of these responsibilities by reason of the fact that (1) certain safety precautions are involved in combating even surface fires and, (2) although peat is not now, so far as known, utilized commercially or otherwise in this country as a fuel, it is extremely valuable agriculturally in at least one of our States, The justification for the conservation of such low-grade fuel through fire prevention appears warranted because of its present value to agriculture and the possible advantages accruing to future generations as a source of heat and power.Although the Bureau of Mines has published information on the origin and uses of peat, this is the first attempt to give out data concerning the prevention and control of peat-bog fires. Although the information presented here is restricted to the Lake Superior District, California, and Florida, there may be similar conditions in other sections of the country that have not come to the attention of engineers of the Bureau of Nines."

In connection with its investigations of strategic minerals in the United States, the Bureau of Mines ran magnetic surveys totaling more than 533,000 linear feet at 30 deposits of magnetite in northern New Jersey. These deposits occur in a belt of granitic gneiss and in limited areas of limestone. The ore consists of magnetite accompanied by score of the following minerals: Hornblende, augite, apatite, feldspar, biotite, calcite, garnet and pyrolusite. Results of these investigations are being presented in two reports of which this is the second. The first paper, Certain. Magnetite Deposits in New Jersey, by A. L. Neumann and McHenry Mosier, was issued in April 1948 as Report of Investigations 4225.

This publication is one of a series by the Federal Bureau of Minus describing methods and costs of minim, uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The La Sal mine is in the Big Indian mining district, about 29 miles southeast of Moab, San Juan County, Utah. The claims that encompass the mine were located in March 1953, and the La Sal ore body was discovered as a result of a drilling program begun in August 1953. The mine is owned by the La Sal Mining & Development Co., a subsidiary of the Homestake Mining Co. Homestake continued the drilling program and in May 1954 began sinking a 572-foot shaft and constructing a surface plant. The plant and shaft were completed in October 1954. The La Sal ore body is in the Chinle (Triassic) formation. it is tabular and dips with the enclosing beds about 8° southwest. The ore body is generally 4 to 8 feet thick but in a few places is as much as 20 feet thick it is being developed by a series of strike drifts and dip inclines, driven within the ore stratum on about 100-foot centers. A haulage level driven beneath the ore body is connected by raises to the upper workings.

The Bureau of Mines developed a stopping design that allows the stopping to be blown down by strong blast forces without incurring any permanent damage. Trials with the new stopping, dubbed the quick-fix blowout stopping, have been conducted in the Bureau's Safety Research Coal Mine at Bruceton, Pa., and in two New Mexico uranium mines. Results have been favorable in all cases. Compared with conventional brattice stoppings or wood bulkheads, the quick-fix blowout stopping is easier and less time consuming to install, is easier to maintain, and in most cases is just as efficient an air barrier. There is same indication that the shape of the stopping makes it more resistant to blast fore s than the fabric stoppings now in use.

The West Red River oil field, in Tillman County, Okla. (fig. 1), is approximately 8 miles northwest of the town of Burkburnett, Wichita County, Tex. The wells are in the river bed between the medial line and the south bank of the Red Diver. In the following discussion of the geology, development, and exploita-tion of the field, the authors have, by means of structure maps, crews sections through various parts of the reservoir and tabulated development data and production statistics, recorded salient information on a field whose development was unique and in some respects unusual for fields discovered and initially developed more than a quarter of a century ago. The total oil production from Government-operated leases; considered in the report was 6,900,440 barrels to January 1, 1947, from 3 proved acres developed by H1 oil-producing wells, 10 gas-injection wells, and 5 nonproductive wells. A calculated past recovery of 60P, barrels of oil per acre-foot and an estimated ultimate recovery of 6.S0 barrels of oil per acre-foot under present gas-injection methods begun in 1929 in shown.

This report is in fulfillment of Contract H0230031 awarded to Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., on May 23, 1973. The scope of work to be performed under this contract was divided into four phases: Phase I - Design, Phase II - Construction, Phase III - Field Demonstration, and Phase IV - Analysis and Final Report. During Phase I, an agreement was finalized with the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Co. for conducting field tests of the proposed shearer spray systems on a longwall panel in the company's Jane Mine in Indiana County, Pa. A drum was then designed which could be used on the Eickhoff shearer, Model EW170-L, being used on this longwall and which would utilize the following spray systems: 1. One spray nozzle located in front of each cutter bit with the jet directed at the cutting surface. 2. One spray nozzle located in back of each cutter bit with the jet directed at the back of the bit. 3. Standard Eickhoff nozzles located in a header along the drum scrolls. 4. A fixed header mounted on the shearer directly behind the drum to simulate the spray system originally used on the Eickhoff shearer.

This was a study to identify and evaluate known technologies employing electromagnetic resonance phenomena in solid minerals for their identification and assaying, particularly assay logging of exploratory boreholes. A comprehensive literature search and study revealed some little known NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) techniques developed by Professor G. J. Béné's group at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. These are suitable for use in weak, inhomogeneous magnetic fields. Laboratory NMR tests of numerous U.S. ore minerals showed good identifying signals from phosphates, fluorspar, bauxite, oil shale, and spodumene (lithium) ores, but not from the copper, lead, antimony or manganese ores tested. Use of EPR "signatures" for such ores is suggested. A conceptual design for an NMR assay logging system is proposed.

This paper presents only the highlights of previous research on the paleobotany of coal. The accumulated material has become so vast that a comprehensive review of all findings relating to paleobotany would be far too long. The fact that coal is derived from plants is now so well-known that no further comment is required, but knowledge of the mode of transformation of plant substances into coal is not so general. The plant matter goes first through processes of semirottins-, maceration, and elimination of certain material to form peat, which is then further transformed into coal. The first stage has been termed the "biochemical process," because the more important changes take place under the influence of micro-organisms. Near the end of the biochemical action an unconsolidated peat is formed. The second or "dynamochemical process," caused by the addition of superincumbent rock strata such as sandstones and shales and application of additional pressure and possibly heat through mountain-building forces, results in the formation of higher-rank coals ranging from brown coal to anthracite. These stages in trans-formation of plant material to coal have been described in previous reports.4 The main object of this paper is to bring to the notice of paleobotanists the fact that coal contains an enormous amount of material in a remarkably good state of preservation. Although some of the coal-forming matter has lost its identity, much of the original structure is retained. A large proportion of the coal, therefore, particularly of common bright coals, comprises constituents or components that invariably have retained some of the original plant structure, and many of these structures may be assigned to certain plants. The identity of these plants and of the remains forms the subject of this paper.

"The US Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota have developed design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for underground coal mines. These are based on the premise that size can be used to separate diesel exhaust aerosol, which is mostly submicron in size, from coal dust aerosol, which is mostly greater than a micron in size. The sampler has three stages: a respirable aerosol preclassifier, a 0.8-um aerodynamic diameter inertial impactor to collect mineral dust and a final filter to collect the diesel aerosol. Using a sample flow rate of 2 L/min and gravimetric analysis to within 0.1 mg, the measure sub-0.8 um diesel aerosol has an a-priori limit of detection of 0.3 mg/m3.A miner working in an underground coal mine with diesel equipment is exposed to a wide array of pollutants from the diesel exhaust. These include CO, CO2. NO, NO2, SO2, diesel exhaust aerosol, and a variety of hydrocarbon compounds. A quantitative definition of the health risk resulting from these exposures remains elusive. During the past several years, though, progress has been made in defining the problem.Results from epidemiological studies by Garshick et al. (1988 ), animal inhalation studies by Mauderly eta). (1986), Iwai et al. (1986), and Brightwell et al. (1986) and in vitro studies by Lewtas et al. (1986) have provided sufficient data for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NOSH) to recommend that ""whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a 'potential occupational carcinogen,' as defined in the Cancer Policy of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration"" (NIOSH, 1988). NIOSH further stated that ""though the excess risk of cancer in diesel-exhaust-exposed workers has not been quantitatively estimated, it is logical to assume that reduction in exposure to diesel exhaust in the workplace would reduce the excess risk.""The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has also been directed by an advisory committee to establish a diesel exhaust aerosol standard and to establish regulations to minimize exposure to diesel pollutants in underground coal mines (MSHA,1988). Both reports point out the need for development of measurement techniques for respirable diesel aerosol.In the past four years, the US Bureau of Mines (Cantrell,1987 and Cantrell, et al. 1987), in cooperation with Marple, et al. (1986), at the University of Minnesota's Particle TechnologyLaboratory (PTL), have studied the use of size-selective sampling techniques to measure the mass concentration of diesel aerosol in underground coal mines. Results from these studies have been used to develop design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for use in underground coal mines.These criteria are based on the premise that size-selectivesampling techniques,can be used to separate diesel exhaust aerosol, which is predominantly submicron in size, from coal dust aerosol, which is mostly greater than a micron in size. In addition to the performance criteria, this paper discusses the laboratory and field test data used to develop the criteria."
