"INTRODUCTION Mica is found in Georgia from the Fall Line in the central part of the State to the Valley and Ridge Province in the northwest. During the past 3 years, Georgia has been one of the chief producers of dielectric mica in the United States. Since January 1945, when prices were reduced, mining has decreased until practically no sheet mica is being recovered at present.The main mica-bearing regions in the State may be classified into three districts: The Thomaston district comprising Upson, Lamar, and Monroe Counties; the Ball Ground district, comprising Cherokee and Pickens Counties; and the Hartwell district, comprising Hart and Elbert Counties. There are numerous mines and prospects in all of these districts. All have been visited from time to time by engineers of the Bureau of Mines and by members of the Federal Geological Survey. The Federal Survey has made detailed maps and reports on all of the most important ones.This report will deal with five of these properties on which the Bureau of Mines has diamond-drilled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "This information circular discusses drilling and blasting in open-cut iron-ore mines and is one of a series of papers describing iron-ore mining practices in the Lake Superior district to aid in preventing accidents in that industry.The Lake Superior district consists of the Marquette and Menominee ranges of Michigan, the Gogebic range of Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Vermilion, Mesabi, and Cuyuna range of Minnesota. Open-cut mines produce 8o percent of the iron ore mined in the district; 98 percent of the total Lake Superior district open-cut ore is produced in Minnesota and 2 percent in Michigan. The entire Wisconsin iron-ore production is from underground nines. The Mesabi range in Minnesota produced 93 percent of the open-cut iron ore and 76 percent of the total iron ore in the district in 1947.During the 8-year period 1940-47, 619,000,000 gross tons of iron ore were shipped from mines of the district, or 85 percent of the United States output. Approximately 78,000,000 gross tons of iron ore were shipped from the mines of Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin in 1947.This paper is based primarily on observations daring the period July 1947 to March 1948. Thirty-two open-cut mines were visited; 28 on the Mesabi range, 3 on the Cuyuna range, and 1 on the Marquette range. In 1947, 36,100,000 tons of iron ore was shipped from these 32 mines, or 59 percent of the open-cut ore and 46 percent of the total iron ore shipped from the district. During 1947 about 90 open-cut iron-ore mines were operating in the district, and the annual production of each ranged from 25,000 to 10,000,000 tons.Many recommendations included in this paper for improving safety and preventing injuries to employees were taken from Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7387.Data were collected under the direction of Frank E. Cash, former supervising engineer, Health and Safety Division, Bureau of Nines, Duluth, Minnesota. E. W. These formations are designated by one commonly applied name, ""iron formations.""4/The Mesabi range in northern Minnesota, about 70 miles northwest of Duluth, was opened to mining in 1892; it is the largest single source of iron ore in the United States. It is 75 miles long and, because of the gentle dip of the ore formation, it ranges in width from 1-1/2 to 3 miles.5/ The ore formation, which is nearly horizontal, has a maximum thickness of about 450 feet and is covered by a glacial drift that ranges from 10 to over 100 feet in thickness. The objectives of this study were the evaluation of the technical and economical feasibility of utilizing color and color infrared aerial photography to satisfy some informational needs for pre-mine planning, mine progress monitoring, and reclamation monitoring. Seven aerial data collection missions were conducted within a two year period over strip mine sites in Pennsylvania. Scales of 1:6,000; 1:12,000; 1:24,000; and 1:48,000 were flown on the first aerial mission. The 1:12,000 was chosen as the optimal scale for the remaining six flights. An extensive literature and legislative review and discussions with strip mine operators identified the informational parameters that could possibly be obtained from aerial photography. Interpretability accuracies were evaluated for parameters in the broad categories of land use, soils, water, vegetation, and geology. Seasonal interpretation characteristics were noted for infrared photography. Man hours for photointerpretation and costs of aerial data collection were monitored closely and incorporated into a cost benefit analysis. Those parameters that could be mapped, identified, or measured with accuracies =75 percent were incorporated into a photointerpretation training manual. An additional analysis was performed to determine the applicability of the interpretation methodologies and results developed for Eastern sites to Western surface coal mining sites. In addition, a separate aerial photographic interpretation manual was produced during this contract. It is intended to be utilized by eastern and midwestern surface mine operators and regulatory personnel.

A stronger U.S. economy stimulated the domestic mineral sector in 1994. Metals demand was spurred by robust U.S. motor vehicle sales, while demand for major industrial minerals rose in response to highway and building construction. Domestic mineral and material demand is expected to increase in 1995, particularly if interest rates do not restrain the building industry and international monetary exchange rates remain advantageous to U.S. automobile manufacturers. Additional information on events, trends, and issues in the mineral and material sector is presented below and in the commodity sections that follow. Overall Performance Processed materials of mineral origin produced in the United States during 1994 increased to an estimated value of $360 billion. Domestic output of raw nonfuel minerals in 1994 was estimated at $34 billion, about 6% more than that of 1993. The value of U.S. minerals production has increased in 29 of the last 34 years.

AN ACT prescribing the mode of maintaining and defending possessory actions on lands belonging to the United States. The People, etc. SEC. 1. Any person now occupying and settled upon, or who may hereafter occupy and settle upon any of the public lands belonging to the United States, unoccupied, except upon lands containing mines of any of the precious metals, may commence and maintain any action for interference with, or injuries done to his possession of said land, against any person or persons so interfering with or injuring such land or such possession. SEC. 2. On the trial of any such cause, the possession or possessory right of the plaintiff shall be considered as extending to the boundaries embraced by the claim of such plaintiff, so as to enable him to have and maintain any action as aforesaid, without being compelled to prove an actual inclosure; provided, that such "claim" shall not exceed in any case one hundred and sixty acres of land. SEC. 3. Every such claim, to entitle the holder to maintain any action as aforesaid, shall be marked out, so that the boundaries thereof may be readily traced, and the extent of such "claim" easily known, and no person shall be entitled to maintain any such action for possession of, or injury to, any claim, unless he occupy the same, or shall have made improvements thereon to the value of $100. SEC. 4. A neglect to occupy or cultivate such "claim," for the period of three months, shall be considered such an abandonment as to preclude the claimant from maintaining any action as hereinbefore mentioned. Sec. 5. Any person or persons claiming the right of possession to land under this act shall have the right to defend said possession and the claim thereto, and all the rights and privileges given them by this act.

The oil industry in the United States is further advanced than in any other country, because of American initiative and the development of industries dependent in some way on petroleum or its products. For this reason the output has constantly increased (fig. 1), and as a result this country has produced more than half of the total output of the world. Trw total past output of the world is approximately 7,000,000,000 barrels of 42 gallons each; of this the United States produced about 4,000,000,000 barrels, or about 57 per cent. The limit of production in this country is being approached, however, and although new fields undoubtedly await discovery, the yearly outpnt must inevitably decline, because the maintenance of a given output each year necessitates the drilling of an increasing number of wells. Such an increase becomes impossible after a certain point is reached, not only because of a lack of acreage to be drilled, but because of the great number of wells that will ultimately have to be drilled. According to figure 1, the daily production per well each year has increased during the last few years. However, this increase is abnormal, being caused by the new pools brought in. Although such a condition may continue for several years, the average production per well will finally begin to decrease on account of the lack of new pools to make up for the normal decline in production of the old ones.

Three-dimensional structural analyses of three instrumented areas of a deep, longwall coal mine have been performed using the finite element code BMINES. The three Instrumented areas include two single-entry portions and one double-entry portion of the Sunnyside No. 1 Mine, Sunnyside, Utah. The finite element models simulated the sequence of excavation in each test area: the advance of the entry, installation of structural supports, retreat of the longwall, caving behind the longwall, and accumulation and loading of the gob. The structural supports considered in these finite element models include rock bolts, wood cribs, concrete cribs, steel arch sets, and chocks. Mechanical simulation of the geologic environment is achieved through elastic/ perfectly plastic material models employing anisotropy to represent finely layered regions of the medium. The results of these calculations are com-pared with the instrumentation readings from the mine. These measurements include closures, crib loads, rock-bolt forces, and stress growth.

This paper is one of a series comprising the Mineral Industries Survey of the United States, which was begun in 1935. It describes the simple methods of mining and beneficiating manganese ore, in eastern Tennessee and compares these methods with those used elsewhere in the Appalachian region. The report contains general information on manganese to give a clearer understanding of the methods and costs of mining and. beneficiating manganese ore foam a widespread deposit, an in addition presents zone difficulties normally fond in these operations. The marketing, uses, and value of manganese ore are discussed as well as the amount of capital necessary for effective operation on given scale of production, and requirements are outlines for successful operation of manganese, property in this region.

The objectives of the work described in this report are to determine the communications requirements and need for communications, both for voice and control, on longwalls, and to make recommendations for longwall communications equipment and systems. These recommendations are designed to guide the future development of longwall communications. Information necessary for the accomplishment of this work has been gathered by a series of visits to longwall mines and discussions with longwall mine operators, as well as with suppliers of longwall communications and mining equipment and with Bureau of Mines personnel. In addition, it has proven possible, through personal interviews and literature evaluation, to gain an understanding of the experience and attitudes towards longwall communications in countries where longwall mining is far more widespread than in the U.S., namely the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Belgium.

This paper describes a comparison of the fatigue failure responses of older versus younger lumbar spine cadaver motion segment specimens. These specimens were repeatedly subjected to loads simulating those experienced by the spine in lifting a 9 kg load in different torso flexion postures (0, 22.5, and 45 degrees of flexion). An older sample of 36 motion segments (average age 81 years + 8 SD) is compared with a younger sample of 18 motion segments (average age: 47 years + 9 SD) with respect to the number of cycles to failure and results of survival analyses evaluating the effects of flexion and bone mineral content with and without the younger data set. Compared to the older sample of spines, the younger sample exhibited many more cycles to fatigue failure in all the torso flexion conditions (10020 versus 8267 average cycles to failure in 0 degrees flexion, 7124 versus 3262 in 22.5 degrees flexion, and 3229 versus 263 cycles to failure in 45 degrees flexion). The increased cycles to failure in young specimens is likely due to the increased bone mineral content (BMC) in younger motion segments (30.7 g + 11.1 g per motion segment versus 27.8 + 9.4 g). Cox regression analyses modeling both flexion effects and BMC indicate that betas are similar when just older spines are modeled and when younger specimens are included in the analysis. Betas for survival analysis models with and without younger specimens generally show little change for flexion (2.716 versus 2.756 for 22.5 degrees [0 degrees referent], 3.926 versus 3.380 for 45 degrees [0 degrees referent]). Bone mineral content shows a similar protective effect in both models (Betas: -0.127 versus -0.087). Overall, comparison of the models indicate that risk ratios are similar for 22.5 degrees flexion, slightly increased for 45 degrees flexion and slightly more protective influence predicted for BMC in the combined sample versus the older sample alone.

The purpose of this program was threefold: (1) to identify the symptoms of poor or inadequate performance of trolley carrier phone systems; (2) to assess the root causes of performance difficulties and classify them on the basis of equipment, coupling, or transmission; (3) to propose, analyze, test, evaluate and verify means of overcoming performance difficulties. Based on interviews and discussions with knowledgeable persons, laboratory experiments, and in-mine measurements, it was determined that the major impediment to good carrier phone system performance is the extreme signal attenuation found on the trolley wire/rail largely due to the many bridging loads. Three means are identified to help overcome the performance difficulties: the low impedance trolley wire, a method of improving performance by capacitively loading the transmission line; the dedicated wire, a low-loss means of extending trolley signal coverage; the use of isolators to remove the offending bridging loads at the carrier frequency. Other subjects treated in the report are design reviews of hardware, guidelines for the use of information in the report, recommendations, and a description of a probe for measuring trolley wire current.

[Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly in the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft-paper industry, especially in Lie South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This demand is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorably situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far re¬moved from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4?10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to most consumer requirements. The waters of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery or production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible.]

This report expands an earlier study by Jack Faucett Associates (OFR #40-88) of the same title. Both reports are based upon an interindustry analysis from 1963 through 1982, during which time U.S. metals consumption and production did not keep pace with economic growth. The report discusses three sources of change: technological change, economic growth, and composition of final demand, as well as the relative importance of the individual components of final demand for metals. The results show investment and personal consumption to be the most metal-intensive components of final demand, and technological change to be the major cause of decline in consumption growth during the study period. Technology change is defined as alterations in production processes resulting in more or less consumption of metal per unit of output, often because of material substitutions and design changes. A trade analysis shows the significance of import growth, particularly indirect imports (metal contained in imported goods) as a factor contributing to the reduced growth rate of domestic metal production. The effect of import growth is partially offset by indirect export growth, suggesting that continued increase of all U.S. exports can have a strong effect in reducing the negative trade balance in metals.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report identifies potential causes of slip-and-fall accidents occurring during surface mine equipment maintenance and describes the relative roles of direct worker behavior and machine design. The relative roles of human behavior and machine design in the causation of slip-and-fall accidents were determined through analysis of accident records, observations of maintenance worker behavior, and evaluation of mine machinery. From these data, relative risk ratios were calculated. Behavior had a relative risk ratio of 1.5; machine design, specifically access systems design, had a relative risk ratio of 2.2. Of the access systems, ladders had the highest relative risk ratio, 7.0. This study suggests that accident intervention would be most profitably made in improving the design of systems used to access maintenance worker areas of mining equipment.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, at its nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station, New Brunswick, N. J., has, for a number of rears, been investigating the commercial possibilities of treating the complex saline mineral polyhalite (K2SO4?NgSO4?2CaSO4?2H20) for the recovery of potash and magnesia. Certain proposed processes (1, 2, 3, 4)4/ yield waste liquors that contain the bulk of the magnesium and sulphate originally combined as magnesium sulphate in the polyhalite molecule. Fourteen straight-run asphalts were prepared in the laboratory from bitumens obtained from three sources: (1) native bitumen from Rozel Point, Utah, (2). bitumen extracted from Athabaska bituminous sandstone at Canada, and (3) bitumen extracted from Edna bituminous sandstone outcropping in San Luis Obispo County, to seven asphalts with penetrations ranging from 19 to 287 at 77 F. were prepared from each of the bitumens. The yields of the prepared asphalts ranged from 74.5 percent for a 27-penetration asphalt from the Athabaska bitumen to 99.5 percent for a 271-penetration asphalt from the Rozel Point bitumen.

In 1986, the Bureau of Mines conducted a probability sample survey, Mining Industry Population Survey, to measure such employee characteristics as occupation; principal equipment operated; work location at the mine; present job, present company, and total mining experience; job-related training during the last 2 yr; age; sex; race; and education. The population estimates are necessary to properly analyze the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury (includes illness and fatality data) statistics; that is, to compare and contrast injury rates for various subpopulations in order to identify those groups that are exhibiting higher than average injury rates. This report uses the survey's results to characterize the U.S. coal mining workforce from March through September 1986. A companion report, Information Circular (IC) 9193, "Characterization of the 1935 Metal and Nonmetal Mining Workforce:' provides similar information for the U.S metal and nonmetal mining industry.

A minitest of the new potassium chloride-potassium carbonate two-stage in-situ uranium leach process has been carried out at the Intercontinental Energy Corporation (IEC) Zamzow project site in South Texas. Substantial quantities of high concentration uranium were produced indicating the viability of the leach solution. The test results yield information regarding the reservoir dispersivity, the average cation-exchange capacity of the formation, and the distribution coefficients describing cation-exchange reactions. The test also indicates permeability anisotropy and the existence of disturbed flow fields.

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States decreased 23% in value from that of 1981 to $262 million, of which 53% was manufactured abrasive, 39% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 8% was natural abrasive. Production of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, appeared to be stable when compared with that of 1981. Production of tripoli, a porous siliceous rock, increased slightly after decreasing steadily over the three previous years. Humankind's interest in measurement of human physical strength probably dates to the first humans. At that time, life was truly a struggle in which the fittest survived. To a great extent, fittest meant strongest. Interestingly, current interest in human physical strength in the workplace stems from 1970-1980s vintage research demonstrating that persons with adequate physical strength are less likely to be injured on physically demanding jobs. Survival in many modem workplaces may still be a case of survival of the strongest. There is, however, a flip side to this issue - that persons with limited strength are more likely to be injured on "hard" jobs. To address this problem, we can apply what we know about physical strength to job design. "Hard" jobs can be redesigned to be within the physical strength capability of most people. Since physical strength is important to these jobs, we must find ways to quantify it through testing. This publication concerns human physical strength testing. Its purpose is not to recommend any particular type of testing, but rather to describe the types of testing available and their uses. It is up to each individual user of strength testing to decide which testing technique is most appropriate for his or her particular application. This booklet discusses four types of strength testing: isometric, isoinertial, psychophysical, and isokinetic. Human Strength Before describing the different types of strength measurement, we must define the term "strength" and explain the concept of strength measurement. Strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with voluntary muscle contraction. Maximum strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a maximum voluntary muscle contraction.(1,2) These definitions include some key words that must be explained. A voluntary muscle contraction is "voluntary." When a person's physical strength is measured, only the effort the person willingly puts forth at the time is measured. Thus, when we test a person's "maximum strength," we are not measuring his or her actual maximum, but some lesser value representing what he or she is comfortable expressing at the time with the existing equipment and environmental conditions. Interestingly, when researchers startled persons being tested (e.g., by setting off a starter's pistol behind them), they have found significant increases in measured strength.(3) It has been hypothesized that the lower strength displayed during normal testing provides a margin of safety against overloading and damaging muscle tissue. The test equipment and the tested person's familiarity with the process also influence the "voluntary" strength output. The interface between the tested person and the test equipment is particularly important. A poorly designed interface induces localized tissue pressures that vary from uncomfortable to painful. In this situation, testers are measuring voluntary discomfort tolerance - not strength. It is important for strength researchers to keep the "voluntary" nature of their data in mind when they are designing their equipment and protocols.
