The biological stage of reclamation is the third final stage in remediation the damaged mining terrains, which is carried out following the completion of the mining technical stage. The biological stage of reclamation is carried out through restoration of the vegetation layer. The biological reclamation includes all activities related to the introduction into the terrain of vegetation, microorganisms, insects, and animals, with the acceleration of the succession and creating conditions for a sustainable ecosystem close to the natural one. It comprises of all anti erosion and other activities such as the preparation of the land for growing agricultural crops, sowing grass seeds, planting seedlings, amelioration of the soil and further care for the vegetation until its final place on the land. Mineral and organic-mineral ameliorants for biological reclamation were studied. The basic mineral ameliorant is Bulgarian natural zeolites. The zeolitic-rich tuff samples provided from Golobradovo deposit was characterized by their chemical and mineralogical composition and ion exchange properties and X ray analysis. The average content of clinoptilolite was found to be more than 80%. The materials had ion exchange capacity (NH4+) varying from 100 to 110 meq/100g. Chemical modifications of natural clinoptilolites were made in order to form active phases of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and microelements. Slow-acting mineral ameliorant was developed. Organic-zeolite substrate for biological reclamation was developed. This new product is a mechanical mixture of organo-matter and modified zeolites. Agro-chemical parameters of new ameliorants were determined. The substrates including studied overburden dump soil and mineral or organo-mineral ameliorants are produced. The cleaning circuit operation and its effect on the plant metallurgical performance, was characterized at Los Pelambres concentrator, Chile. Experimental data from columns, scavenger and regrinding stages was evaluated. Each stage was characterized by size fractions, and the interaction between stages (columns, scavenger, regrinding) as well as the effect that circulating loads had. The approach for describing the flotation equipment operation (cells and columns) considered the collection and froth zones separately. This methodology allows for the identification of the impact that particle size distribution has on the actual collection and froth transport processes, independently. In this way the effect of regrinding on flotation recovery and grade can be related to the corresponding operating variables, e.g. pulp flowrate, air flowrate, pulp level and pulp density, among others. The effect of gangue entrainment was considered using an empirical dimensionless correlation. The interaction between the circulating load and the overall performance of cleaning circuit was evaluated. The circulating load was defined as the ratio between the solid flowrate of scavenger concentrate over rougher concentrate. It was found that the overall cleaning flotation circuit (column-scavenger) can operate at a relatively high and constant recovery for a wide range of mineral treatment. This is possible when the scavenger has the capacity for compensating the decrease in column recovery at larger circulating loads. Under the condition of high overall cleaning recovery, the rougher stage closely represents the plant recovery. However, at large mineral treatment conditions, the design characteristics (e.g. concentrate transport channel capacity and transfer boxes) as well as instrumentation, control facilities and operation, became bottle-necked. The mining industry is in search of control strategies that allow considering a global optimization of their processes, ensuring their stability. This has led to the application of recently developed control techniques on large-scale systems in the mining processes. One of the most important process of the mining industry is the mineral grinding, as the product particle size impacts, in a significant manner, the recovery rate of the valuable mineral in the separation stages. As a solution, a centralized hybrid model predictive control (HMPC) is presented; this control approach maintains the product particle size on a defined range and minimizes energy consumption, maintaining the grinding plant in a stable operation. As a comparison, a conventional model predictive control with an expert system to handle discrete events was developed, showing HMPC is a suitable solution that can used in the grinding process, with the benefit that it handles in the same controller both discrete and continuous dynamics and events.

Modelling and optimisation of the power draw of large SAG mills are important due to the large power draw which modern mills require (5~10 MW). The cost of grinding is the single biggest cost within the entire process of mineral processing. Traditionally, modelling of the mill power draw has been done using empirical models. Although these models are reliable, they cannot model mills and operating conditions, which are not within the model database boundaries. Also, due to their static nature, the impact of the changing conditions on the power draw, within the mill, cannot be deter-mined using such models. Despite advances in computing power, on-line modelling of large plant scale mills could be a time consuming task. On the other hand, using on-line parameters for model-ling, result in more reliable control of SAG mill without performing any more costly tests. In this paper, SAG mill power draw is modelled using neural network approach. Six inputs, namely: solid percent, two bearing pressures, noise, recycle and feed rate were used to model the power draw. The produced model shows an acceptable correlation coefficient, R2 =0.9623.

"Froth structure and stability are known to play an important role in determining flotation recovery and selectivity. An industrial sampling campaign was performed to develop a clearer understanding of the effect of flotation variables on froth stability and the role played by the resulting stability on flotation performance.Froth stability was estimated as the fraction of bubbles bursting on the surface of the froth through image analysis and the solids loading on the bubbles at the top surface. It was generally found that high air flowrates resulted in a drop of froth stability showed by a drop in the fraction of air overflowing and a decrease in the solids loading and simultaneously produced low copper recoveries and low concentrate grades. Deep froths only allowed a small fraction of air to overflow and consequently produced low recoveries. An increase from a standard to high frother dosage did not result in a larger fraction of air overflowing, hence producing low recoveries. Likewise, low frother addition only allows low recoveries because the resulting unstable froth cannot support itself. Low aeration was found to be preferential as it allowed high particle loading, therefore high bubble stabilisation, and low gangue entrainment, resulting in the highest flotation performance.Additional laboratory tests were performed to introduce a new stability parameter and to give a clearer understanding of the effect of flotation variables on froth stability. The results confirmed some of the observations made on the plant."

A high-grade fluorite ore is converted into hydrogen fluoride to produce many kinds of materials containing fluorine. Recently, it is becoming necessary to use low-grade fluorite ore due to the depletion of high grade ore. The low-grade fluorites usually have impurities such as SiO2, P, CaCO3 and arsenic. The most impurities such as SiO2, CaCO3 and P can be removed by using flotation method. However, the removal of arsenic is difficult, and the arsenic contamination decreases the hydrogen fluoride production percentage. The novel technologies for processing low-grade fluorite ore are urgently needed, in order to lower the arsenic concentration to less than 100 mg/kg. In this study, the removal of arsenic from low-grade fluorite ore has been investigated by means of an autogenous grinding using tower mill in sulfuric acid aqueous solution and 0.3 mm zirconia balls in water. The nano grinding in water can prevent the dissolution of 0.3 mm size zirconia balls as grinding media by sulfuric acid solution. Experimental results showed that the arsenic concentration was reduced from 260 mg/kg to 90 mg/kg and CaF2 recovery reached 90% by this process.

In the leaching of gold in aqueous cyanide solutions the rate of gold leaching may be decreased by the passivation of the gold, that may however be prevented or reversed in the presence of lead species in solution. In the present study potentiostatic, potentiodyanamic and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) analysis were used to further clarify the action of lead ions on the anodic activity of gold in alkaline cyanide solutions. It was found that lead increased the gold dissolution rate as it deposited on the gold surface at potentials more positive than its reversible Nernst potential for bulk metal deposition, i.e. by underpotential deposition mechanism, but that it decreased gold activity if present as bulk plated lead on the gold.

"This paper introduces the mineralogical analysis of certain polymetallic copper-zinc ore in China with the aim of improving the flotation process. The main valuable elements, mineral phases and compositions of run-of-mine ore were inspected by the X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and chemical analysis. For a deep known of the old process defects, Mineral Liberation Analysis system (MLAs) was employed to investigate the minerals liberation degree of selected key slurry points. Analysis results show that the run-of-mine ore belongs to the original copper-zinc polymetallic symbiotic ore at low oxidative level, which mainly contains 0.16% Cu, 4.43% Zn and 0.88% Sn. Gangue minerals are mainly silicate minerals, and zinc mineral is sphalerite. MLAs test illustrates that about 86% sphalerite has been dissociated in zinc flotation feed. In the current flotation process, over grinding of sphalerite monomer and insufficient liberation of intergrowths are the key problems need to be solved imminently. Up to this point, a new process consisted of two steps roughing unit is submitted in this research. It contributes two positive effects on zinc flotation performance: (i) separating sphalerite monomer timely to decrease overgrinding; (ii) improving zinc minerals intergrowths liberation efficiency. Flotation results indicate that the zinc concentrate grade increased 0.90% and the recovery improved 0.96% in the new flotation processINTRODUCTION Mineralogical analysis mainly focusses on solving mineralogy problems in minerals processing, assisting in minerals behaviors prediction and control for separation engineering (Falkovich, et al., 2001; Hillier, et al., 2003; Schouwstra and Smit, 2011). Process defects searching becomes its ordinary work, and flotation optimization appears to be its targets gradually. For example, Lucky Friday mine company (Idaho America) fails to obtain qualified lead concentrate as the change of ore properties (Nadoll, et al., 2011). Mineralogical analysis ascertains that there are too many dissociated sphalerite, pyrite and gangue particles exist in lead concentrate. According to this, more cleaning units are added to solve problems effectively. Kanowna Belle mine (Australia) takes a flash circuit in operation successfully with the aim of optimize flotation process, under the helps of mineralogical analysis and industrial test (Newcombe, et al., 2013). Lotter N.O. (2011) gives a deep description on how mineralogical data assisting mineral processing engineers to design and optimize flowsheet. For decades, quantitative and automated mineralogy techniques (Andersen, et al., 2009; Gu, et al., 2012; Oghazi, et al., 2009; Yu, et al., 2007) get well developed and hugely improve the veracity and repeatability of minerals properties measurement. Among these, MLAs (Gu, 2003) provided by JKMRC (Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Center) is critically acclaimed all over the world. This analysis system can measure mineral phases composition and content, particles size, minerals occurrence and liberation degree directly."

The interest in investigating the processing characteristics of mineral deposits in Norway has seen an upsurge in the last decade. One of the major areas of interest is a huge copper deposit, operated by NUSSIR ASA located in the Repparfjord Tectonic Window in the caledonides of west Finnmark. This study reports analysis of ore from the deposit for development and modifications in the flotation flowsheet for the NUSSIR ASA copper ore. The mineralogical characterization for the ore sample was achived by optical microscopy and Zeiss automated mineralogy while grinding characteristics were tested using Bond Index tests. The results confirmed the presence of Cu minerals in the form of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and bornite in the samples, which are mainly liberated in the – 105 µm size range. The majority of non-liberated copper sulphides associated with silica and the carbonates varies from 3 to 28 percent in the –250 µm samples . It is also observed that the copper minerals are uniformly distributed in all size ranges. Selective flotation of NUSSIR copper ore was performed in different size fractions with a motive to identify the correct liberation size and thus to obtain a copper concentrate meeting the quality requirements. The flotation experiments are essentially performed in two stages: the rougher and the cleaner stage. Mass balance calculations were performed showing that approximately 88 percent of copper can be obtained at the end of the process. Ultimately, overall circuit copper recoveries ranged between 83.5 to 88.1 % with a concentrate grade of 35 to 48 % Cu.

"Multistage model designed and used for more detailed description of floatation process. The study develops a new model of flotation kinetics description. It defines flotation as process that consists of several stages: air bubbles and particles are separate, air bubbles and particles form a raising aggregate, aggregate raises to froth layer. This description significantly differs from commonly used model, which is much simplified. The multistage model gives an in-depth description and considers different aspects of flotation. Experimental approval of the new model resulted in its accuracy.The model is to be used for description of all flotation processes’ kinetics of wastewater treatment. It helps in accurate designing of flotation treatment plants and may be used for further research of flotation process. Columnar flotation installation was designed by using multistage model. This installation consists of new tubular aerators with special ejectors, froth pressing system as well as unit of thin-layering lighting to catch microflotocomplex “particle – bubble”. Usage of tubular aerators allowed to aerate the overall volume of pulp. Due to use of special ejectors with longer mixing camera we state higher volume of small-sized floto-active bubbles. Use of multistage model allowed to optimize and get higher technological results of potash salts enrichment. Tests were conducted on centrifuges-floatation installation system. Meanwhile, froth concentrate contained mainly thin hydrophobic particles sized circa 0,1 mm. As a result we set that during floatation cleaning process of froth concentrate 95-98% of chloride potassium (KCI) is derived from foam.The final product satisfies production quality. Columnar floatation installation productivity was 17 – 21 m3/m2h, which is a high technological result. Columnar floatation installation is one of the best examples of concentrating equipment using nearly all technological indices."

This paper focuses on the influence of pulp oxygen content on the separation of pentlandite and pyrrhotite contained in two different process streams in the Clarabelle Mill, operated by VALE INCO. The two process streams are (i) the scavenger cleaner feed, the product of regrinding the thickened, scavenged concentrate and the B cleaned tail produced from treating the non-magnetic fraction of the milled run of mine ore, and (ii) the magnetic concentrate which is the magnetic fraction of the milled run of mine ore. In the Clarabelle Mill, sulphite (SO32-) and TETA (triethylenete-tramine) are together used to selectively depress pyrrhotite from pentlandite. These depressants pre-ferentially decompose collector and/or sulphur enriched species at the pyrrhotite surface, an appar-ently essential mechanism in pyrrhotite depression from the scavenger cleaner feed stream. Selectivity in depression may originate from differences in the electrochemical rest potential of pyrrhotite and pentlandite. As both minerals are susceptible to oxidation, aeration in conditioning and flotation plays a key role in selective flotation. The production of electric and electronic equipment (EEE) is one of the fastest growing areas. This development has resulted in an increase of waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE). In view of the environmental problems involved in the management of WEEE, many counties and organizations have drafted national legislation to improve the reuse, recycling and other forms of recovery of such wastes so as to reduce disposal. Recycling of WEEE is an important subject not only from the point of waste treatment but also from the recovery of valuable materials. Consumer electronic equipment (brown goods), such as television sets (TV), radio sets, and video recorders, are most common. However, recent work on recycling of waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) primarily focused on personal computer and printed circuit boards scraps. Based on a detailed characterization study of consumer electronic scraps, recycling of TV scraps oriented to recovery of metals is highlighted by utilizing air table separation, eddy current separation, and optical (metal) sorting process. The result indicates that a high recovery of copper could be obtained by utilizing an effective gravity separation process. The separation results reveal that air table separation is an effective technology to recover metals from consumer electronic scraps. By using a DGS table, approximately 90% of non-ferrous metals were recovered in the heavy product with a purity of 40%. Printed circuit boards and cables in TV scrap cause metals loss due to the fact that metals in printed circuit boards and cables are not liberated from plastics and ceramic materials. The study shows that eddy current separation and optical (metal) sorting process provide alternatives for recovery of metals from shredded TV scraps.

"This paper presents the results of a through investigation into the froth recovery measurements in a controlled plant environment using a device that allows direct collection of dropback particles from the froth phase. Test work was performed at the Northparkes concentrator (NSW, Australia), using a feed taken from the head of the cleaner scavenger bank. The feed slurry had a relatively higher copper grade varying from 5.2% to 6.8%. Experiments were performed to investigate the effect of important flotation parameters such as air flowrate on the froth recovery. The size of the particles in the relevant streams was also analysed to acquire in-depth knowledge about the froth dropback mechanism. The results suggested that the froth recovery could be as low as 70%, although it was relatively easy to achieve the values in the range 75% to 85% by the correct choice of operating variables. It was found that the air flowrate has a positive impact on both collection (pulp) and froth zone recoveries. However, the effect was more prominent in the froth zone. It appeared that the froth recovery is a strong function of particle size."

"The REFLUX™ Classifier (RC™) consists of a fluidized bed housing, with a system of parallel inclined channels above. This system performs a simultaneous gravity separation and desliming of the feed material, utilising the inclined channels in order to retain the relatively fine dense particles. These particles promote the formation of an autogenous dense medium within the fluidized bed. Relatively large, low density particles are displaced from the fluidized bed and conveyed upwards through the inclined channels reporting to the overflow with other finer particles. Given the hydrodynamic role of both the particle size and density in determining the particle transport through a water based suspension, all gravity separators operate over a limited size range. In the case of the REFLUX™ Classifier, efficient separations can be produced across a very broad size range, from nearly 10 mm down to 10 m, however, for a given application the size range is much more limited. This study was concerned with the processing of dense minerals over a broad size range, and the need for multistage processing. Here the overflow from the first stage cascades to the second stage, incorporating coarse gangue rejection. This approach is shown to deliver remarkably high grades and recovery.INTRODUCTION The performance of the REFLUXTM Classifier (RC™) in beneficiating fine coal is well documented (Galvin, 2012). Although the technology can be applied to relatively fine particles below 0.1 mm, or coarser particles below 2.0 mm or even 8.0 mm (Galvin et al., 2010), in each case the technology is applicable to limited particle size ranges. In coal preparation, the most common size range is 0.25 to 2.0 mm, covering an eight-fold range in the particle diameter. Coal has a relatively low density, typically below 1600 kg/m3, with a significant portion below 1400 kg/m3. In water, the buoyant density difference (~ 400 kg/m3) is therefore low compared to that of gangue minerals (1600 kg/m3) by a factor of 4, enhancing the potential for separation. Thus, in coal preparation, the technology can be applied over a commensurately broader size range, typically up to eight-fold."

"Semi Autogenous (SAG) mills exhibit complex interactions between the competing processes occurring inside them. Traditional practice is to measure the operation of the SAG mill at an operating point in terms of its load, power draw, steel load, ore throughput rate, water addition rate and more recently the feed size distribution. However significant departures of operating conditions can occur due to changes, for example, in ore hardness, the quest for higher throughputs and mill internal geometry.Fundamental to SAG mill operation are the internal processes that ensure that a given ore throughput and discharge grind size are obtained and maintained. These processes can be measured using non-contact acoustic emissions from the SAG mills which utilise the information rich noise that is generated by the grinding, flow and charge movement inside a mill.Non-contact acoustic in-mill measurements can be used for the validation of discrete element modelling (DEM). The approach being reported in this paper is to model the individual physical processes and then to simulated the assemblage of a physical mill."

The demand for high-grade iron ore has increased the importance of beneficiation of low-grade iron ores. The captive mines of Tata Steel Limited, India has reserves of Banded Haematite Jasper (BHJ) ore assayed 40% Fe, 40% SiO2 and <1% Al2O3. QEMSCAN study has revealed haematite and quartz as a major iron bearing and gangue mineral phases respectively. Liberation characteristics have showed 80% liberation can be obtained at particle size below 10µm. In the present study, reverse cationic froth flotation of BHJ using ether diamines is explored in Denver-D12 flotation cell. Polynomial response surface regression equation coupled with six-factor Box-Behnken design of experiments is used to generate the correlation between process separation efficiency and flotation parameters. Flotation studies of BHJ indicated that concentrate of 62% Fe can be achieved with 62% Fe recovery from Jig concentrate at optimum conditions. One of the important technological challenges facing the iron ore industry in India is to find commercially viable technologies to process alumina rich iron ore fines and slimes. The key to solving this problem lies in developing selective reagents for the separation of iron oxide minerals from associated gangue minerals like quartz, gibbsite, kaolinite and montmorillonite. We present in this paper our successful results on the dispersion-flocculation of three different natural iron ore slime samples from mines in India using the reagent combination of PVP dispersant and corn starch flocculent. All the three samples contained hematite, goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite minerals as confirmed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effect of various process parameters such as pH, dosage of reagents, settling time and pulp density was studied. We were able to produce a concentrate assaying 66.2% Fe and <2% Al with a yield of 67.4% by weight (with a recovery of 77% of iron values) using PVP (1 ppm dosage) and corn starch (20 ppm) for one of the slime sample (Sample I) assaying 58.2% iron (Fe) and 3.8% aluminium (Al). The XRD analysis of settled and dispersed fractions revealed that alumina-containing minerals like clay and gibbsite mostly remain in the dispersed phase while iron-bearing minerals tend to concentrate in the flocculated fraction. "UG2 chromitite ore is a complex, highly disseminated platinum ore from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, with typical platinum group mineral (PGM) grain sizes below 15µm. The introduction of stirred mills to the platinum industry has enabled grinding to finer product sizes, which has improved liberation and recovery of the finely grained PGMs. However, reduction in particle size leads to an increase in chromite entrainment in the flotation concentrate, which has a negative impact on the subsequent smelting process. Factors such as particle size, froth structure, solids concentration and water recovery have all been identified as impacting entrainment, but whether particle shape also has a significant effect is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the recovery of chromite particles by entrainment during the flotation of UG2 ore is affected by particle morphology. A laboratory vertical stirred mill with inert ceramic media was used for grinding UG2 ore which was then floated in a batch flotation cell. Flotation feed and concentrate samples were analyzed using QEMSCAN to quantify the angularity and aspect ratio distributions of the particles. The stirred mill product was found to have relatively broad aspect ratio and angularity distributions, with the major mineral components (chromite and silicates) having very similar shape characteristics. Analysis of flotation feed and concentrate samples suggested that particle shape does not have a significant effect on chromite entrainment."

"As deposits of high-grade base metal sulphides become depleted, attention must be focused on the treatment of complex sulphides, which contain significant fractions of precious metals such as gold and silver. Acid pressure oxidation is a promising process for these materials and the recovery of silver and gold will improve the economy of the process. Gold can be recovered from the oxidised residues, however, silver is incorporated into the jarosite specie and the cyanidation of the resulting residue yields very low recovery.Pressure oxidation of various complex sulphides was carried out at 110-150°C in sulphate media with additions of potassium iodide under conditions similar to industrial autoclaving. The resulting residues were subjected to cyanidation. High recovery of silver, up to 98%, was achieved because its incorporation into lead-hydronium jarosite during the pressure oxidation was minimised, while its deportment into the cyanide-soluble silver iodide was favoured. Silver recovery decreased slightly at high temperatures (140° and 150°C) because of the enhanced stability and kinetics of lead-hydronium jarosite, but this could be overcome by increasing acidity and iodide concentration of the autoclave slurry."

Cationic flotation using alkylamines and their derivatives as collectors, and characterized by high selectivity of mineral particle separation, is finding ever growing industrial application. In recent years the industrial application has been initiated of new cationic collectors - alkylmorpholines. Efficiency of cationic surfactants operation as collectors is dependent upon their colloid and sorption properties and the availability of silicate .carbonate rock-forming mineral impurities in the ore, which sorb the cationic collector. Investigations have been carried out on the influence of frothers and organic depressors with various compositions upon physical-chemical and flotation properties of alkylamines and alkylmorpholines. On the basis of these investigations requirements for organic depressor were developed and new flotation reagents were proposed (V-1 frother and KS-MF depressor). The use of new reagents enables one to decrease considerably the consumption of expensive cationic collectors and to enhance the floatability of coarse mineral particles. Data of new reagents industrial application is presented. The reagents developed can be used for flotation processing of other ores.
