The production of minerals for economic use is a two-stage process, involving mining to extract the mineral from the ground, and processing to convert the mineral into a marketable product. Generally, mining and processing have been viewed as self-contained entities. Both have separate objectives, separate cost centres and key performance indicators (KPIs) that do not reflect the customer/supplier relationships that inherently exist. However, mining and processing operations are inter-connected and therefore intimately inter-related with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often misses potential economic benefits and energy savings. During the past fifteen years, the authors have been involved in implementing a holistic methodology ?Mine to Mill Process Integration and Optimisation (Mine to Mill PIO)? to maximize the overall profitability of the operation rather than just optimizing any individual process in a mining operation. Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI), along with their project partners, have conducted several projects to significantly increase their production- generating typically 5% to 20% higher throughput and improve the overall mine and concentrator performance through PIO methodology. This proven methodology has applications ranging from greenfield projects to long-standing operations with AG/SAG, HPGR or conventional grinding circuits. This paper explains the Mine to Mill PIO methodology and discusses the benefits of such an approach on the energy consumption, the overall costs and benefits of mining operations. The paper also summarizes several case studies illustrating the use of PTI methodology in a variety of applications. "Expert Online is a software system that makes use of novel artificial intelligence technology, known as the Interpreting Expert System (IES), to mimic an informed expert on a minerals processing plant. Previous implementations of the IES were only capable of explaining the controller actions. Expert Online will also take on the more difficult task of explaining the complex process behaviour to the operator in simple language.The primary functions of Expert Online are to serve as a training tool and an online assistant to operators. However, it is also expected to be of value to supervisors and plant managers.A number of additional features are envisaged, including different operating modes, fault detection, speech synthesis and advanced message filtering. Expert Online will increase the operator’s knowledge of the process and his/her understanding and acceptance of the complex control systems. Users would be supplied with relevant and timeous information required to make informed decisions to ensure smooth plant operation.This paper discusses the structural design of Expert Online for implementation on the latest version of MINTEK’s open control platform, PlantStar, as well as several advances and additions since the previous implementations of the Interpreting Expert System."

MIBC and sodium metasilicate are used as a frother and a dispersant in coal flotation respectively. In order to study interaction between them, flotation experiments were performed on fine coal (<150 microns). It was found that if the frother (MIBC) dosage is in excess of a certain limit, it has an activation effect on the gangue minerals associated with coal. In addition, it was found that however sodium metasilicate can disperse clay slimes eliminating slime coating, but in the case of excess dosage, could intensify activation effect of MIBC, which is undesirable in coal flotation. Due to complex mineralogical and chemical interactions of the value and gangue mineral phases present in uranium-containing lateritic ores, deleterious pulp gelation which impacts on value metal recovery sometimes occur during atmospheric leaching. In this study, the leaching behavior and particle interactions of selected oxide (hematite, quartz) and clay minerals (muscovite, chlorite), which constitute predominant host gangue phases of typical lateritic uranium ores are investigated to provide basic, mechanistic understanding of temporal pulp gelation phenomenon. Isothermal, batch leaching with H2SO4 was carried out on concentrated dispersions (30 ? 57 wt.%) of single minerals at pH 1 and 25 or 70 °C and their concomitant solution, speciation and rheology (shear yield stress, viscosity) were characterized. It is clearly shown that despite the high oxide content of lateritic ores, the pulp chemistry and rheology is largely affected by the incongruent leaching behavior of more reactive, acid-consuming aluminosilicate clays. Furthermore, time- and temperature-dependent alumino-silicate species polycondensation interfacial reactions are shown to be responsible for the enhanced particle interactions, reflecting strong pulp rheology in agitation and pumping. If not properly mitigated, high pulp shear yield stress and viscosity have a striking impact on processability and hence, value metal recovery.

"Bacteria that grow in autochtonous communities of gold heap leaching (HL) wastes are adapted to high concentrations of contaminants and environmental conditions. An example of a mine in the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic showed that the bacterial factor had a significant influence on cyanide breakdown and copper and nickel removal in the conditions of HL ore pile zoning compared to chemical oxidation. The diversity of bacterial communities growing in natural and simulated conditions of a HL ore pile was determined for the purpose of the study. The identified bacterial communities included genus Achromobacter and Serratia, which were found to be adapted to a wide range of temperature and can be considered as potential microorganisms for detoxification of gold HL wastes. INTRODUCTION Technologies and systems of passive treatment are of a special interest in relation to solving environmental problems of gold HL wastes detoxification, when neutralization time is not considered as a limitation (Alvarez et al. 2005). Passive treatment methods are based on reagentless spontaneous breakdown of cyanide caused by natural factors, including activity of autochthonous bacterial communities. Implementation of a reagentless biodetoxification technology for mature HL operations provides reduction of environmental impact on industrial site locations and substantial economic benefits compared to conventional chemical processes of neutralization that prevail in the Russian Federation territory. Passive treatment of cyanide-containing wastes was investigated by M. Botz, T. Mudder, S.V. Petrov, L. Simovic, A. Smith, C.A. Young etc. However, the bacterial factor (autochtonous bacterial communities) role in this process is practically unexplored. Thus, the aims of the study included the investigation of a bacterial factor influence on passive treatment of gold HL wastes and the identification of functional groups of bacteria involved in passive treatment."

The paper is giving an overview about successful operating Loesche Vertical ? Roller ? Mills (VRM) installations and summarises the main benefits of the dry compressive Loesche grinding technologies in Airflow- and Overflow-Mode. Some of these benefits are optimised energy efficiency of the grinding - classifying - circuits, increased mineral recoveries and decreased OPEX costs, at a parallel simplification of the process route. Within this paper the process values of the Loesche VRM are compared to existing or planned conventional grinding ? classifying circuits. Further advantages discovered in pilot trials and examples for new more efficient process route alternatives are given. The paper reports about production and pilot trial experiences obtained by crushing and grinding Iron Ore, Iron Ore Concentrates, Copper Shale, Copper Matte, Copper Slag, Titanium Slag, Tin Slag, Steel and Stainless Steel Slag with Loesche VRM.

"As part of an extensive research and development project, the technical and technological implementation of the patents DE 10 358 245 B4 and WO/2006/056172 was developed with the goal to present a system for the innovative roll- agglomeration method exhibiting a) a modular setup, b) high productivity and c) suitability for the use of fibres of different applications and product qualities (high technical availability). The processability of the rarely adapted raw fibre materials into high-value intermediates brings forward their application in various processing industries dealing with the production of fibre reinforced plastic composites, heat and sound insulation materials as well as with the gas and liquid cleaning systems. The innovative fibre agglomeration presented in this work is performed by a combination of rolling and pressing the fibres inside a geometrically pre-defined roller table, in which the fibres are forced to bound through entanglement / interlocking and develop into agglomerate. The agglomeration process is carried out in a circular roller path with a rectangular cross-section. For improving the adhesive properties, and thus the quality of the agglomerates, the boundary surfaces can be covered / patterned / lined / coated with various materials. The resulting roll-agglomerates are characterized by different quality parameters such as mass, shape, porosity and stability. The properties of the agglomerates can be modified based on the end-product requirements by slightly modifying the process parameters such as filling ratio, residence time, roll-geometry, procurement of the boundary surfaces, etc. as well as the input material properties such as fibre type, fibre fineness, fibre length, etc. This work carries extensive work on the roll-agglomeration system to assess the effectiveness and the variability based on the product specifications. Agglomerates were produced with wide variations of system parameters with varying roller table liners and based on evaluation of the produced agglomerates with respect to their mass, the geometrical dimensions, their porosity and stability."

"This study gives an insight into non-destructive testing methods suitable for porosity analysis at a small scale, firstly summarizing relevant state-of-the-art technology and pending patents, secondly realizing and documenting the start-up of the VHX-2000 digital microscope by the manufacturer Keyence and thirdly demonstrating practical application with the extended analysis of three fundamentally different agglomerates for which important application-related parameters are determined. Various analysis procedures on the different agglomerates the efficient and timesaving operational features of the digital microscope are outlined. Firstly an analysis of flax fibre agglomerates determines the process conditions best suited to produce agglomerates with specific properties by determining sphericity, cubicity, density and porosity as well as fibre damage and alteration. Secondly the production of iron-hydroxide - hemp-fibre agglomerates serves to obtain information on porosity values as a result of a cauterization of the fibres. The third analysis provides estimations of porosity values for acid-treated lignin agglomerates. Measurements were carried out with compact dry agglomerates and with soaked, expanded agglomerates, determining factors for total water carrying capacity. Practicability of non-destructive testing by digital microscopy is demonstrated and explained concerning the applications in this study by obtaining definite structural findings about the analysed agglomerates. Information on its operation is made available by a practice-oriented manual for the VHX-2000 digital microscope. Further suggestions for more in-detail analysis results with different instruments are given."

PETROBRAS started its Oil Shale process development in 1953, the PETROSIX process which was developed and tailored to Irati Oil Shale formation. Since 1991, the industrial plant called MI (Industrial Module) has been operating, producing more than 20 million barrels of oil. In order to continue the oil shale exploration, a new shale mine is been opening. This article reports the planed measures taking in order to limit the environmental impacts and to return the land as close as possible to the original condition, as well as with the disposition of the process waste and the city garbage. It shows that the remediation process starts during the mining activities and continues after the mine exploration. Another characteristic of the Petrosix process, the pyrolysis of tires will be focused.

Flotation separation of galena, sphalerite with pyrrhotite in ethanoic acid + sodium acetate sys-tem was studied in this paper. The flotation tests show that galena and sphalerite can float but pyr-rhotite can hardly float in the pH range of 3.6 to 5.6 in ethanoic acid + sodium acetate system. The flotation tests also show that galena can be separated efficiently from pyrrhotite and sphalerite can be separated on the whole from pyrrhotite, but the separation efficiency of the former is much better than the latter. The flotation results have been investigated by ultraviolet spectrum and XPS analysis, and explained by theory of hard and soft acid and base (HSAB), hydrogen bond and galvanic coupling.

"A history of mill strain gaging at Metso is presented. The output of these strain-gaging programs is compared with calculated stress ranges from different finite element solutions. These comparisons expose the amount of approximation that exists in the analytical solutions, starting from geometry, and material properties, and ending with different forms of internal load models. The influence of strain gaging results on mill design and analysis practices is also discussed. While these instrumentation programs are valuable in identifying areas of high stress in mills, and locations of stress concentration factors, they are by no means extensive or comprehensive enough to verify general internal load models. The vast majority of the programs were aimed at getting additional data about potential failure points, rather than describing overall mill stress behavior. This is especially true since the more recent gaging programs have not included the difficult task of gaging the mill rotating structure interior. This paper tries to avoid the novice path of leaping to general conclusions on the basis of insufficient data."

Charge motion is of prime importance in the efficiency of comminution in tumbling mills. Since direct observation of charge shape and its motion in industrial mill are not possible, a combination of analytical and physical studies was used to determine charge trajectory. Software packages, which predict charge motion such as the GMT (Grinding Media Trajectory) only consider the outermost layer of charge (single ball) and ignore the interactions of grinding elements. In this research, the measured charge trajectory in a 1m-diameter mill with the transparent end, called model mill, was compared with that of the GMT. Four types of polyurethane rings were accurately machined to scale down the liners arrangements at two industrial mills. To explore various charge shapes and trajectories, the model mill was operated at 55, 70 and 85% of critical speed for five levels of mill filling (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% by volume). The angular displacement of the toe, toe departure, shoulder and charge impact point were determined from the photographs taken from the model mill. New relationships to predict charge shape and charge impact points were introduced to modify the GMT results. The relationships were validated by the model mill using the new liner of the Sarcheshmeh copper complex SAG mill. The relative error of prediction was found to be 1.1%. The results indicated that when the lifter face angle increased from 7 to 30º, the distance between the charge impact point and the toe decreased from 52 to 31º for 25% filling. This meant increasing the probability of charge impacting the toe not the liner which favoured more efficient comminution practice. After converting AG mills to SAG mills on account of liner profile change, 31% increase in throughput (from 419 to 548 t/h) in addition to 4% decrease in the product size (from 516 to 496 µm) were realized which was a significant contribution in the plant performance improvement.

The paper presents issues related to interference of mining activities with the environment. Exploitation of mineral resources causes primarily a modification of the landscape. All of the negative impacts on environment are short-lived and last as much as it takes to exploit the raw material. After the mine closure reclamation is necessary during which all aspects that reduce harmful effects of the mining activities on the environment must be taken into account. Current ways of reclamation allow recreating natural environment, which is different from the original and enriched in diverse new values. This requires propositions of new forms of converted land development through a detailed analysis of technical, natural, planning, economic and social sphere requirements. Before making final decisions regarding selection of direction of reclamation, a thorough analysis of the key factors has to be carried out. All steps related to the implementation of the reclamation project are shown in the paper using Limestone Mine "Górazdze" located in the south-western part of Poland as an example. This paper also presents an analysis of current ways of post-mining reclamation towards agricultural and forestry landscape, along with our own suggestion for their extension in order to preserve biodiversity. For choosing optimal solutions the most relevant criteria were considered: existing natural values and possibility of their protection. Taking into account the economic and social aspects, supported by natural potentials, implementation of tourism and recreation in this area were proposed. It was shown that this proposition would not interfere with the current trends of the natural landscaping. Finally, after completion of reclamation and land development in the considered mine area, creation of a geo-park was proposed along with appearance of geotourism in the area. To illustrate the proposed forms of post-mining land development in the form of maps, an ArcGIS(ESRI) software was used.

Most of the coal reserves in India are of drift origin and have very poor washability characteristics and a high level of near gravity materials. At least 30 new coal wash plants are expected to be set up in the next 5years.In such a scenario, adequate sampling followed by sink float test work for washability analysis becomes very critical for designing these new plants. For coal sampling purpose, stipulations of different standards are sometimes formidable and on the border of ?impracticality?; sometimes are self contradictory in terms of gross sample weight vis-a-vis minimum number of particles required in each size fraction and in each relative density fraction and also the minimum mass in the latter. Validation of the generated data is another important aspect of washability analysis. These issues can easily be addressed by using straight forward mathematical relationships, well known RR plots and by using simple MS Excel tool, etc.

The dynamic behaviors of the air bubbles in the dense gas-solid fluidized bed have a significant effect on the performance of dry coal separation. The combined method of experimental measurement and numerical simulation were conducted to conduct the research of the mean diameters and rising velocities of the bubbles in the fluidized bed. The calculation models of mean diameter and rising velocity of the single bubble were proposed. The results indicate that the models of the mean diameter raised by Rowe (1976) and the rising velocity raised in this work could be used to predict the bubble dynamic parameters in gas-solid fluidized bed. With the Geldart B type of magnetite powder as the medium solids and while the gas velocity of 1.5Umf=U=2.2Umf, the mean bubble diameter along the bed height is 36mm<Db<45mm, and the mean rising velocity of the single bubble is distributed in 40~65cm/s. The results of experimental measurement, numerical simulation and model predication provide well agreements finally. Based on the uniform fluctuations of air bubbles diameters and their rising velocities, the separation experiments of 50~6mm dry coal using the mixture of 0.3~0.15mm magnetite powder and <1mm fine coal as medium solids were carried out. The results show that the probable error, E is 0.06, which indicates a good separation performance by using the gas-solid fluidized bed. Bubbles around 1 mm diameter provide the high interfacial area for capture and transport of hydrophobic particles in flotation. The formation of such fine bubbles is commonly achieved by addition of frothers that appear to simultaneously retard coalescence and promote break-up. High inorganic salt content in process water can substitute for frother. In this work we focus on the action of salt (sodium chloride) on formation of bubbles by break-up. An experimental setup that isolates break-up from coalescence was employed. A pocket of air is exposed to controlled mechanical turbulence to produce single bubbles by the induced deformation of the air and the events imaged. The presence of salt is shown to produce smaller bubbles than in water alone. Comparison with a similar study on frothers is made. The argument is advanced that the presence of frother and salt creates surface tension gradients at the air/water interface which add to the mechanical energy of the deformation and break-up process.

"The versatility of froth flotation has made it vital in the beneficiation of rare earth elements (REE) minerals from either high or low grade ores of complex mineralogy. There has been a significant increase in the tonnage of rich iron oxide tailings obtained from extraction of primary commodities such as copper and gold in Australia, which have been identified to have very low grade rare earth oxides (REO) (= 1%). There is a vast knowledge gap in the upgrade of REO from such tailings. The aim of this research is to investigate the feasibility of the use of fatty acids for the upgrading of REO from selected iron-oxide rich tailings. Two forms of fatty acid collectors (oleic acid and sodium oleate) were employed in this investigation. Bench scale flotation tests were carried out using a Denver D-12 cell.The effects of pulp pH, fatty acid dosage, particle size distribution (-150 +75 µm, -75 +38 µm and -38 µm) and conventional depressants (sodium silicate and starch) dosage on flotation recovery of REO were investigated. A comparison of the flotation results indicated that sodium oleate was the more efficient fatty acid for REO flotation at all the pulp pH investigated. The flotation performance is demonstrated to be particle size-dependent. The results on the effect of depressants dosage indicated that both sodium silicate and starch were unselective in reducing the recovery of hematite (Fe2O3) and quartz (SiO2) with corresponding decrease in REO recovery. Generally, Fe2O3 and SiO2 formed substantial contents of the flotation concentrates obtained, both in the absence and presence of depressants, which indicates liberation is a major challenge in achieving selective REO upgrade and recovery.The flotation tests carried out on the iron-oxide rich tailings suggest the possibility of REO upgrade using fatty acids, although particle size distribution and minerals liberation are key limiting factors in achieving selective REO upgrade and recovery."

Batch wise adsorption tests for platinum (Pt) on the surface of activated carbon pellets (Norit RO 0.8 BET surface area 1100 mg/g) were carried out in mixed chloride solution. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the adsorption performance of amine-treated activated carbons (AACs) and native activated carbons (NACs) in terms of adsorption capacity and selectivity. The effect of pH and temperature on adsorption capacity and selectivity was established. The amine- treated ACs were prepared by anchoring the amino groups (butyl amines) on the surface of AC pellets in aqueous media and the UV-Vis was used to determine the amount of amine sequestered from solution by ACs. The dosage of butyl amine on the surface of ACs averaged 0.15 g/g, carbon. The adsorption mechanism was described by the ionization and complexation model whereby interaction between the protonated AAC surface and the anionic chlorocomplex ions (PtCl5 [H2O]-, PtCl62-) proceeded by either electrostatic attraction or/and by covalent bonding [(NH3)2PtCl6 or (CH2COO)2PtCl6]. By comparison, the adsorption capacities of Pt on amine-treated ACs and native ACs were 53.8 mg/g and 33.03 mg/g, respectively which highlight the benefits of anchoring functional molecules on ACs. The selectivity of AACs was influenced by solution pH. Pt adsorbed selectively on the surface of amine-treated ACs at pH<1.5. The highest separation factor that was recoded pertained to Pt and Fe species (ßPt/Fe = 90) then followed by Pt and Ni species (ßPt/Ni = 30) or Pt and Cu species (ßPt/Cu = 15). The lowest separation factor was recorded for Pt and Cr ions (ßPt/N= 5). Adsorption kinetics of Pt on amine-treated AC surfaces, according to the first and second order reactions, were investigated and results showed that rates were in the order 10= 5). -4 min-1 and 102 g?min/mg, respectively. The pseudo 1st order kinetics predicted the adsorption capacity of 51.81 mg/g which was almost similar to the experimental value (53.8 mg/g) while the second order rate equation predicted Pt adsorption capacity of 40.1 mg/g. Both The Langmuir and Toth isotherm fitted the Pt adsorption at pH < 1.0. The Freundlich isotherm tended to underestimate the adsorption capacity of AACs.

"Considering the shortage of lithium reserves, the desirability has been shown of studying the possibility of processing into spodumene concentrates the concentration tailings and low-grade ore reserves at Transbaikalian Mining and Processing Project (ZabGOK). The mineral and chemical composition and the particle size distribution of the mineral feed, separability and recoverability of spodumene have been studied, forming the basis for the development of a concentration process and flowsheet for the studied mineral resource. Prospects have been established for impact ore grinding in a disintegrator, the efficiency of mechanochemical processes has been shown in the separation of quartz and feldspar and the recovery of lithium from concentrates.INTRODUCTION Lithium is widely used in various industries - nuclear power engineering, defense technology, power generation, ceramics, special-purpose glass and other technologies. The increasing demand for lithium and its compounds (lithium carbonate and hydroxide) for use in the manufacture of high-tech products (lithium-based materials for chemical sources of electric power and electrochemical energy) explains the need for establishing a sustainable raw material base (Mohr et al. 2012; Moores, 2007). The main sources of lithium are spodumene pegmatites (Vladimirov et al. 2012; Garret, 2004), brines (salars), and hydromineral materials (Garret, 2004; Zeng and Liu, 2009; Kotsupalo and Ryabtsev, 2008). However, in view of the absence in Russia of extractable hydromineral resources of lithium, the practical significance of spodumene ores remains decisive. Russia controls some of the world’s largest reserves of rare-metal pegmatites holding over 8 million tons of Li2O: approximately 7 million tons on the Kola peninsula and 1 million tons in the Sayan mountains. The main lithium mineral in pegmatites is spodumene LiAlSi2O6 containing 8.1% Li2O. It can be efficiently recovered by gravitational concentration and flotation. However, most of the deposits are located in remote areas and none is currently developed. In this connection, special research is focused on technogenic raw materials, which are increasingly seen as a solution to the resource base problem (Chanturia, 2008, Kurkov and Kotova, 2007)."
