Introduction During the last twenty years, science and industry have been strenuously endeavouring to discover new sources and new kinds of liquid fuels and to work out suitable chemical methods for their production. One of the new possibilities for the production of liquid fuel on a large scale is law-temperature carbonization of various grades of coal. The use of alcohol as motor spirit, in spite of its relatively low calorific value, is being widely investigated. Its production by fermentation of sugars, its recovery from the sulphite liquors of the paper industry, its production directly from wood and also from calcium carbide, have all been considered. At present the most promising line of investigation would appear to be the further development of those technical processes which yield liquid fuels from coal; since science has shown the possibility of preparing all kinds of liquid fuels and even the complete conversion of coal into oils. The present paper will consider briefly: 1. The production of primary tar by low temperature carbonization of coal. 2. The hydrogenation of coal. 3. The synthetic processes of Dr. Franz Fischer.

"The Candego property is in Boisbuisson and Christie Townships, Quebec, about 13 miles south of Marsoui, a village on the north coast of the Gaspe peninsula, 80 miles east of the railhead at Matane. It was the first producing mine in the peninsula. Production to October 1954, when operations were suspended, totalled 68,497 tons of ore, which yielded concentrates containing 8,706,535 lb. lead, 5,870,272 lb. zinc, 355,526 oz. silver, and about 1,000 oz. gold. The property was acquired by the present company in the summer of 1955.The mine has been developed by seven adits, driven into the west slope of the valley of the Marsoui River. The river here is at an elevation of about 1,600 feet, and is roughly 1,500 feet below the level of the adjacent upland. Adit elevations range from 1,760 to 2,330 feet. Five of them are in one vertical zone, on what was originally believed to be a single vein. Past production has come from Nos. l to 5; the chief present high-grade ore reserves are in No. 7.The author's observations were made in adits Nos. 3 to 6, in several of the old pits, in the surface trenches, and on drill core, at various times between December 1952 and September 1953. Much of the surrounding area has been mapped by Jones (I) and McGerrigle (2) for the Quebec Department of Mines. H. M. Kingsbury served as consulting geologist to the mining company for several years.General GeologyThe Candego veins occur in Lower ( ?) Ordovician sedimentary rocks which form a strip about 15 miles wide along the north coast of the Gaspé peninsula. The series includes limestones, shales, and sandstones, mildly metamorphosed in places. Three miles south of the mine is the north contact of the granitic intrusive, regarded as Lower or Middle Devonian, which underlies the Tabletop Mountains area. This batholith is about 10 miles long, in a north-south direction, and about 4 miles wide. At Mount Albert, about 5 miles west of the Tabletop intrusion, is a group of basic rocks, amphibolites and serpentinized peridotites, thought to have been intruded at the close of the Ordovician."

"The Property of Opemiska Copper Mines (Quebec) Ltd. is in Levy Township, Chibougamau district, west of Chibougamau and south of Opemiska Lake. The original find was made in 1929 by the late Leo Springer and associates of Prospectors Airways Ltd., following observation from the air of an area of dark rocks in newly burned-over country. Work on the ground discovered three veins of high-grade chalcopyrite in gabbro (No. l, No. 2, and ""North"") and, after several seasons of trenching and diamond drilling, financed by Ventures Ltd., a shaft was sunk in 1936. This work indicated about 280,000 tons of six per cent copper ore to a depth of 500 feet. During this period, the senior author carried out a reconnaissance geological survey over the whole property and surrounding claims, which showed that the veins were in the gabbro portion of a large composite basic sill that had been folded with the enclosing lavas. Owing to the low price of copper and lack of transport work was suspended and the property remained dormant until 1951.In that year the company was re-financed, the property prepared for production, and further exploratory drilling undertaken. The drilling, based on structural indications, located a new vein of which the only previous evidence had been some irregular stringers. This vein, No. 3, was traced by drilling for a length of 2,000 feet and the indicated reserves were thereby increased to about one million tons. An additional vein, No. 4, was intersected in several holes.With this encouragement, plans for production were confirmed, and operations commenced' at the beginning of 1954 on a scale of about 400 tons a day, concentrates being shipped by truck to St. Felicien and thence by rail to Noranda. In the first year of operation concentrates were re-covered carrying 14,047,210 pounds of copper, 76,714 ounces of silver, and 6,259 ounces of gold. The operation is under the direction of J. P. Millenbach, General Manager, with J. M. Thompson as Assistant General Manager and F. G. Cooke as General Superintendent on the property."

Manipulation of pouring temperature is an efficient way to produce different microstructural features. In order to characterize the microstructure of rheocast billets due to different superheats of 615-695 °C, the parallel plate compression method was employed. Foundry 356 Al-Si alloy with different morphologies of primary a-Al particles were tested at different initial pressures of 4,8, 11,2 KPa, The resulted strain-time graphs were further treated mathematically to calculate viscosity of SSM billets. The interrelationships of viscosity, the microstructure and primary phase flow during compression are discussed, It is shown that the dendritic primary a-Al structure has the highest viscosity number which is almost three orders of magnitude greater than those for globular morphology, The current research have, for the first time, shown the validity and reliability of "parallel plate compression viscometry" method in characterizing microstructural evolution of Rheocast SSM billets.

"Normal sequence of operations to develop a new underground mine is: construct and outfit headframe for shaft sinking, sink shaft, construct and outfit shaft sump, develop shaft station and shaft bottom steel. In an effort to reduce the overall project schedule, an innovative plan was developed to install service shaft steel below station level, prior to the completion of the shaft sinking effort. To better evaluate the construction of this substantial steel tower, a preliminary constructability evaluation was conducted, including the best method of supporting the main tower; from the bottom, middle or top of the tower. The design criteria and plan involved: •,Develop access from existing service shaft, 25 km underground •,Use of materials to maximize strength while minimizing corrosion exposure •,Estimating the location of the shaft centerline •,Over excavating the station and shaft below station to allow future shaft steel repositioning •,Designing the tower steel for modular installation •,Incorporate commissioning considerations, such as suspension of the cheese weights during steel installation •,Provision for covered stair access to shaft bottom •,Enclosed shaft envelope with open panels to allow visibility and ventilation The design approach was innovative and this paper will describe the design principles and challenges encountered while providing insight into the solutions developed and implemented; especially the modular construction and installation methodology. INTRODUCTION In an effort to expand the mining operations, a plan was developed to construct a new service shaft closer to the new mine workings and convert the existing service shaft to a production shaft at the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PCS now Nutrien) Rocanville Potash mine in southeast Saskatchewan. The new service shaft required a multi roped friction hoist operating a cage / counterweight, rope guided conveyances to support the operational requirements. The service shaft is an integral part of the mining infrastructure as it provides access to the underground workings, transport personnel and materials underground for operation and maintenance of the mine. The shaft also allows for services required for safe operation of the underground mine, power supply, controls, communication, dewatering and fresh water supply."

Underground mining of minerals is becoming an increasingly complicated technological and ecological problem. It can be explained both by worsening of geological conditions of mining and by a specific character of mining industry, which, in contrast to processing branches of industry, intrudes into one of principal components of the nature ? the Earth's interior. At a traditional organization of mining industry, the entire volume of the produced rock mass is brought to the Earth's surface, where valuable components are extracted. This entails not only power over expenditure for long-distance transfer (especially in the vertical direction) of the waste rock forming a part of the original mineral, but also the formation of huge volumes of worked-out spaces. The latter leads (nature cannot stand emptiness!) to an irreversible development of geomechanical processes of shifting of overlying rock masses resulting in an irreparable damage of all surface structures located on the territory undermined by deep mining. Owing to their high productivity combined with low power consumption and instrumental compactness, novel bifunctional technological processes of minerals dressing successfully solve the problem of rock mass processing in underground conditions with subsequent operative disposal of final tailings of such underground dressing in the worked-out space. Besides, an integration of two processes into one is achieved, for example, a decrease in the rock mass coarseness with a simultaneous precise separation of valuable and waste components.

Some Safety Measures at Ontario Mines The following safety precautions have of late been taken by several of the Ontario mines: installation of water crossovers; washing clown of faces to show-up missed holes; insistence on gloves being worn as a protection to men's hands; wearing of safety boots and hats by underground men; and wearing of goggles by all men using hammers, starting holes, etc. In the summer of 1924 the Mclntyre mine began experimenting with means of removing powder smoke from headings by installing fans and pipe-lines of various designs, also with different means of introducing water into the air-blast when blowing smoke. By October of that year they had devised a scheme of water connection between the water and the air line, at a distance of about one hundred and fifty feet back from the face, using two valves and a short hose. By this means a limited amount of water could be introduced into the air which blew into the face, resulting in a fine spray of air and water combined. This spray not only helped to eliminate fumes but also introduced fine particles of water into the air, raising it above the dew point, with the result that when these fine particles of water settled they had attached to them fine dust particles, thus eliminating, to a great extent, the injurious dust caused by blasting. The combined air and water is turned on immediately after blasting and allowed to blow continuously for from four to five hours, until the muckers come on shift.

It is well-known that the use of nanobubbles can significantly improve the flotation efficiency of ultra-fine particles. However, this is mainly focused on coal and phosphate rock flotation. In the field of nonferrous metal processing, the related research is few. In this paper, a small laboratory mechanical cell associated with a specially-designed nanobubbles generator was used to investigate the effects of nanobubbles on enhancing ultra-fine scheelite flotation. Nanobubbles were created and based on the hydrodynamic cavitation principle through Venturi tubes. Comparative flotation tests were performed using different tubes to evaluate the nanobubbles impact on the ultra-fine scheelite particle flotation recovery. In order to better understand the nanobubbles enhanced ultra-fine scheelite flotation, nanobubbles potential and size distribution were measured. The effect of nanobubbles on the particle aggregation and scheelite particles potential were also studied through the turbidity tests, microscope tests and zeta potential measurements. According to the results, the mean size of nanobubbles was about several hundred nanometers, and the surface of nanobubbles was of highly negative charge in alkaline conditions. The flotation recovery of ultra-fine scheelite particles was increased in the presence of nanobubbles. The zeta potential measurements indicated that the repulsive forces between scheelite particles decreased when nanobubbles existed. Through the turbidity tests and microscope tests, the promotion effect of nanobubbles on particle coagulation could be verified more directly. The existence of nanobubbles in flotation system promotes the particle aggregation, thus increasing particles apparent size and particles capture by bubbles, which may be the fundamental reason why nanobubbles enhance ultra-fine scheelite flotation.

Both Eldorado Airlines •and Canadian Pacific Airlines maintain scheduled flights from Edmonton to the 4,000-foot airstrip on the north boundary of the Company property. Bi-weekly flights are made by Saskatchewan Government Airways from Prince Albert. Men and priority freight are flown by Company aircraft direct from Edmonton. From June to-September, when the waterways .are ice-free, freight is carried by barge from the •railhead at McMurray, Alberta, down the Athabasca river to Chipewyan, and across lake Athabasca to• Bushell, the terminal on Black bay, lake Athabasca, a total distance of 265 miles.The Eldorado Operation has been connected by a 12-mile, all-weather highway to Bushell. Where the highway crosses the park-land along the Fredette river, the townsite, Uranium, is under construction to provide services to the uranium-producing district. Spur roads have been built to the Ace, Fay, Eagle, •and Martin mines of the Eldorado operation, and to the properties of Pitch-Ore Uranium Mines, Ltd., and Rix Athabasca Uranium Mines, Ltd."

CONSIPERABLE information on the industrial or non-metallic mineral resources of British Columbia has been published. For a general resume of the subject, reference may be made to a paper presented by A. M. Richmond before the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in 1935 (1). To avoid duplication, the present paper is confined to a discussion of the existing industrial mineral industry of the Province and of the factors governing its present and future development. British Columbia's mineral production in 1936 had a value approximately 15 per cent of that for the whole of Canada. Preliminary estimates for 1937 indicate that this proportion has been maintained, although the totals have increased about 25 per cent. The following table presents comparative figures, for the year 1936, illustrating the relative importance of the major divisions of the mineral industry in British Columbia and in Canada as a whole.

"The idea for this talk came to me last year when I was attending the Canadian Gold Metallurgists Meeting. I talked about it to a friend of mine who is an authority on mineral dressing, particularly the theoretical end of the business. He remarked that this was an excellent technical note, why don't you write it up. This is what I have for presentation this morning. I hope in presenting this type of idea in this way it is in keeping with the tradition of the Canadian Gold Metallurgists which was to function on a not too sophisticated level and where operators could get together and trade ideas in an informal way.My basic thesis is that it should be possible to evaluate screen analyses by the application of the standard statistical probability theory. In any statistical analysis the sample is the first consideration. If we look at existing methods of size evaluation we find it is usually based on the fact that a given particle will pass one square aperature and not another. One system of standardizing how these aperatures will be set up is based on Rittenger' s work with the ratio of hole sizes proportional to the square root of 2. Keeping in mind the limitation we have accepted this as our method of 11 sizing"" in attempting to apply standard statistical methods to screen analysis."

"Recently, small sized micro-needles for medical are required more frequently by patients. The biggest reason is that it presents great burden on the patients, due to the size of the needle injection. People need to use a very small needle to lower the pain, but the downfall is that it makes them more expensive due to their complicated manufacturing method. Therefore, we need to fabricate a needle by wire-drawing to decrease its price. Tube-drawing is beneficial for its production value; however, in conventional tube-drawing it is difficult of control the wall thickness of the tube and makes it 1mmor lower in diameter. That is why, we propose fluid-mandrel drawing for new tube drawing. This method allows fabrication of a fine tube by using the pressure of the fluid in the tube. In this research, the goal is the fabrication of a fine tube by fluid-mandrel drawing and its evaluation. Finally, the fabrication of a fine tube by fluid-mandrel drawing was conducted and in result a tube with a diameter of 0.2mm, high strength and thin wall and fine inner surface was drawn, which can be used as a lesser pain micro-needle.INTRODUCTIONThe main manufacturing method of the current medical needles is roll forming. With this method, it is difficult to make a tube with a diameter lower than 1mm. Deep drawing has been proposed and used as method to further reduce the diameter, but this method is costly and the injection needle obtained by this method is several times more expensive.Therefore, we need to obtain a fine medical needle by drawing process that can be mass-produced and inexpensively manufactured. However, with the conventional drawing process, it is not possible to obtain a syringe needle with a reduced diameter easily, that is why, a fluid-mandrel drawing has been proposed which can reduce the diameter without damaging the inner surface. The methodology of the method is, a fluid is filled in the sealed tube and the pressure inside the tube during drawing is responsible for the good inner surface and wall thickness. It is also expected that the fluid can be easily discarded and that the tube can be manufactured on a long scale."

"INTRODUCTORY REMARKS BY PANEL CHAIRMAN - D. A. LIVINGSTONEThe mining industry has progressed significantly from the dusty mines and mills of decades past to the modern processing complexes of today, and improved technology has made great strides in eliminating debilitating lung discuss. More recently, the public's environmental awareness is also working to enforce more stringent regulations and controls in tl1e matter of dust in working places.There are numerous excellent texts and handbooks outlining the principles of collection of dust produced in the various unit operations entailed in the crushing, screening and the transport of ore. However, it is painfully obvious that dust emanating from belt return idlers and scrapers, take-up pulleys, skirting, larger and deeper chutes, clean-up operations, etc., which I choose to refer to as fugitive dust, presents some seemingly unmanageable difficulties, or at least difficulties inordinately costly to correct. Possibly static electricity is adding to the difficulties. In my view, these problems are magnified in many of our B. C. operations where ore from open pit mines in cold climates is frequently crushed in unheated buildings, thereby precluding the simple and obvious use of water sprays for dust suppression.It is hoped that the presentations and discussion which follow will emphasize some of these unusual problerr.s and suggest corrective measures, either tried or planned."

Permanent mould casting may be regarded as a near net shape manufacturing process where simple to very complex shaped engineering components are fabricated with high degree of precision in a metallic mould, In this group, High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC), have attracted more attention because of its production rate, where both liquid and semisolid metals (SSM) can be cast with high degree of precision and versatility. The SEED process, Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device, the new process for semi solid metals slurry production route, consists of two steps: The initial step involves extracting specified amount of heat from the molten metal to generate liquid-solid slurry, i.e, mushy structure, followed by drainage of remaining liquid to produce a compact free standing feedstock for rheocasting operation. "I THANK YOU for the invitation which The Mining Society of Nova Scotia extended, originally to Gordon Berry, manager 'of our Point Tupper Refinery, to join you at this meeting and discuss refining and petrochemicals in their relation to this region. There are natural advantages in Nova Scotia which have made possible, and will continue to make possible, sizeable developments both in petroleum refining and in chemicals. Equally, however, as is the case everywhere, there are certain constraints. For clarity in this presentation, I will state some of these constraints right at the beginning. First, of any future developments from now on, only a small proportion of the products can be expected to go into local markets. I can make the point best with a few figures. Petroleum companies all have market forecasts. None ever work out to be perfect, but the trends are relatively predictable and the orders of magnitude are certainly correct. "The design, construction and operation of tailings dams is rapidly becoming a major consideration for most new mining developments, as well as for many existing operations. In North America, under pressure from public opinion, various government agencies have in recent years enacted legislation covering the design, construction and operation of tailings dams. In British Columbia, comprehensive legislation has been passed during the past year (1971). All of these new regulations may be placed into two broad categories: regulations concerning the safety of the dam and appurtenant structures, and regulations concerning the prevention of pollution. Both types of regulation affect the design of the tailings dam facilities. Consequently, they must be considered jointly by the designer. A good tailings dam design must satisfy the basic requirements of safety, pollution control, storage capacity and economy. To achieve this, 'the design must be based on a thorough understanding of both the geotechnical problems involved and the requirements of the mining development. Obviously, this requires close cooperation between the designing geotechnical engineers and the mining operators. This paper outlines the major engineering factors that should be considered in the investigation, design, construct ion and operation of tailings dams. Basic methods of tailings dam construction are reviewed and the advantages and disadvantages of each briefly discussed. Comparisons are made between the design and construction of conventional water supply dams and tailings dams. Examples are presented of some of the problems that may arise during construction and operation of a tailings dam. The paper also explains the need for basic instrumentation of tailings dams and for carrying out simple field tests and measurements during construction and operation. Of prime importance is the downstream monitoring of surface and subsurface seepage flows. These observations are invaluable where contamination of surface and/or subsurface water may become a contentious issue at some future date. Each tailings dam design must be based on a study of the particular requirements of that project. To make a proper evaluation, adequate data must be available concerning a large number of items•, including such things as: topography, hydrology, geology, subsoil properties, seismicity, government regulations, fineness of mill grind, mill water balance, availability of suitable construction materials, volume of water to be stored behind starter dam, downstream development or liability, and many others. The large number of variables involved in such an evaluation often result in the designer considering two or more alternative designs. Selection of the final design, which is usually based on detailed cost analyses of the alternatives, must be made in close consultation with the owner."

"The proportion of arsenic-bearing copper concentrates that supply the copper industry is on the increase. The current strategy of miners and smelters to blend feeds to reduce average arsenic levels is rapidly becoming unsustainable as more concentrates with even higher arsenic levels enter the marketplace. In addition, the capability of smelters to manage increasing arsenic levels to more stringent and restrictive environmental standards is limited by available process technologies.CESL Cu-As Technology is a viable technical and economic alternative to traditional smelting. It offers the advantage of simultaneous leaching and precipitation of the arsenic in a single processing step while achieving high copper extractions. The process has been piloted in six separate, fully-integrated pilot campaigns for feeds ranging from ~1% to 12% arsenic in concentration. This paper will focus on the behaviour of arsenic in CESL’s leaching/precipitation step and operational factors that influence it, and on the chemical and physical characteristics of the subsequent iron-arsenic residue that represents today’s best available technology from a long-term sustainable (capital/operating costs, metal recovery, safety, environmental) perspective.The examples provided will demonstrate copper extractions approaching 99% and arsenic deportment to residue of 99%. Instantaneous settling rates of the residue were measured at 15+ m/hr. Data from subsequent short and long-term stability testing of the residue confidently support the view that the scorodite-bearing residues from the process will be stable and provide an acceptable arsenic management practice. The technology offers increased revenue and environmental certainty for miners, smelters & refiners to support the development of metallurgically challenged copper-arsenic deposits. Furthermore, results will be presented demonstrating the technology’s ability to successfully incorporate hazardous arsenic containing smelter by-products such as dust into the process feed and simultaneously extract copper value while fixing the arsenic in a stable residue."

Network communication note is a cloud system for an earthwork project. It enables backhoe operators and dump truck drivers to monitor their own works in progress currently and performed up to the present, and to have opportunity to reflect on their own bearings in the earthwork operations, and then could increase their situational awareness to the actual work conditions. First, this paper presents problems and purpose. Secondly, the configuration of the network communication note is reported. Thirdly, examples of communications enhanced by the network communication note are shown. Finally, remarks are described.

The European Guideline ETAG 027 - 2008 (?Guideline for European Technical Approval of Falling Rock Protection Kits?) defines the procedures to test rock fall barriers. Nowadays, this guideline is essentially the only test and construction framework utilized by manufacturers and it is also starting to enter in the mentality of designer who can clearly specify the performances of rockfall barriers. ETAG 27 (and the related European Technical Approval and the CE marking) represents a milestone for the rockfall barrier market, because it gives the possibility to compare the performances of different fences and it ensures the quality of the certified product. For these reasons ETAG 27 presently constitutes the base for tenders all around the world. Although rockfall barriers are in common use, designers and consultants do not have a clear overview of the real performances and the technological limits of these structures. The first problem can be solved using ETAG 27 criteria, which allow designing rockfall barriers at ultimate and serviceability limit state. Even though ETAG 27 uses crash tests performed with the Service Energy Level (SEL) and Maximum Energy Level (MEL), design with these concepts is not obvious or in common acceptance. Some preliminary questions must be solved. When can these energy levels be correctly applied? In the case of rockfall simulations, what probabilistic approach must be used for the evaluation of the barrier? Unfortunately ETAG 27 does not give any information or tests relating to the technological limits of the fences. Therefore some important questions arise. How do the site specific aspects of installation affect the barrier performance? What is the behaviour of the barriers under extreme conditions? And finally, the main question lies in the background: what is the functional reliability of ETAG 27? All of the above questions require comprehensive answers, which is consistent with the experience of designers, installers and producers. Officine Maccaferri S.p.A., with its 130 year experience in the field of rockfall protection, collected a large number of case histories with barriers impacted by single or multiple blocks, debris flows, and snow avalanches. "The property of Francoeur Gold Mines, Limited, lies directly west of the Armfield mine in Beauchastel township, Abitibi district, and 12 miles west and slightly south of Noranda. The gold deposits are of particular interest because of their replacement character and close association with fault zones. The property was originally staked in 1923 following the discovery oi a mineralized zone near the eastern boundary. This became No. 1 orebody. Later discoveries in 1936 of No. 2 and No. 3 orebodies led to underground development and actual mining in July, 1938. A fourth orebody, No. 8, was found in 1939.The following is the production record up to December 31st, 1947:Beginning in September, 1944, ore was shipped to Noranda as siliceous flux, but late in 1946 milling of low-silica ore from No. 1 orebody was undertaken until operations were temporarily suspended in 1947.The four main ore deposits, Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 8, consist of siliceous ferrocarbonate and albite replacement bodies mineralized with fine pyrite and specularite in schistose fault zones in Keewatin volcanics. Barren to low grade quartz veins though present in some are uncommon, but small stringers of quartz are usually present wherever here and there visible gold is found. Nos. 1, 2, and 3 deposits lie in a major fault zone that extends completely across the property from west to east (over 7,000 feet) and dips N.40° to 50°, and are separated by intervals of 1,800 to 2,000 feet respectively. The fourth lies in a smaller fault zone striking east and dipping on the average 65°S.No. 1 orebody has been explored by mining to a depth of 500 feet, No. 2 to 400 feet, and No. 3 to slightly less than 300 feet . The greater part of No. 8 lies above a depth of 200 feet, but a raise has recently .been driven through from the west end of the 5th level of No. 1 to the 2nd level on No. 8 zone. Most of the ore of No. 8 zone above the 2nd level and of Nos. 2 and 3 above the 3rd levels has been removed."
