"The Powell mine is in western Quebec about 2 miles northwest of the adjoining towns of Noranda and Rouyn. It is the original discovery of the area, its gold-bearing quartz vein having been discovered in 1922. Considerable work was done on this vein by several companies and discontinued because the grade, when gold was $20 an ounce, was too low for profitable extraction. Between 1922 and 1924 an inclined shaft was sunk to 225 feet and drifts were driven 240 feet on the 100-foot level.In 1929, due to the discovery and development of the Horne mine at Noranda, interest was revived in the property. Sulphide deposits of the disseminated and vein types were explored on the Powell claims. On the B copper 'showing', a vertical shaft, now known as the 'old copper shaft', was sunk to ·a depth of 167 feet and 300 feet of lateral work was carried out on the 150-foot level. As no orebody was discovered this work was discontinued.In 1933 the present company, Powell Rouyn Gold Mines, Limited, was formed and the gold-bearing quartz veins were again tested by drilling and trenching. In 1936, the price of gold having risen to $35 an ounce, operations were resumed. Since then the inclined shaft (No. 1) has been deepened to 500 feet, a second shaft (No. 2, vertical) on the main quartz vein has been sunk to 2,630 feet, and ll; shallow vertical shaft (No. 3) on the same vein but in the south claim has been sunk to 500 feet.Lateral work now approximates 9 miles, and to November 15th, 1946, 1,685,674 tons of ore, which averaged 0.129 oz. gold per ton and 73.6 per cent. An application of the statistical and computer techniques in basic mineral processing research is illustrated by means of a case history involving the study of starch adsorption on calcite. Multi-factorial experimental designs and computer techniques were used for determining the effect of different system variables, such as solution pH, sodium oleate concentration and starch concentration, and to obtain a mathematical model of the response. Response maps enabled the investigators to see the effects clearly and to predict the results of changes in factor levels within the design region. Use of time-shared computers and plotters made data processing and analysis efficient and relatively inexpensive.

Prior to November 1975 there were several failures of front -wheel spindles on large haulage truck s in B.C., attributed to fatigue cracks. Since that time, a non-destructive test program has succeeded in detecting the cracks before catastrophic failure, However, the author regards the failures as just one example of a. general unreliability in large high-strength steel castings and urges the industry to look to forgings for sensitive components of heavy equipment.

The successful application of color sorting machines has established sensor-based sorting in the mineral industry in recent years and is considered today as a significant innovation in processing technology. However, we are only at the beginning of (market) introduction. New sensor systems have been developed, which exploit material properties such as electrical conductivity, magnetization, molecular structure, thermal conductivity etc. This opens up new exciting pre-concentration and upgrading possibilities for many applications such as nickel, gold, copper and other ores as well as for industrial minerals, diamonds and other gem stones.

The Agassiz Metallotect and the Johnson Shear Zone represent two metallogenetic fea tures located within the northern and outhern belts, respectively. of the Aphebian-aged Lynn Lake greenstone belt in northern Manitoba . Numerous gold occu rrences are associated with these two regional features . The tratabound Agas iz Au-Ag deposit with 2.9 million tonnes of 5.2 g/tonne Au and 11.8 g/tonne Ag. occurs within the Agassiz Metallotect. The stratigraphic sequence characterizing the Agassiz Metallotect comprises interlayered ox ide. silicate and sulphide facies iron formations, biotite-rich and siliceous siltstones. and a high Mg- i-Cr basaltic rock that ha previou ly been identified as tholei itic picrite. These rocks can be traced in outcrop and by their INPUT and gradiometric signature for 65 km. The Johnson Shear Zone is an ill-defined 35 km long zone of strucwral disruption that crosscuts volcanic. sedimentary and intrusive rocks and contains numerous vein-type gold occurrences. Both of these metallotects are characterized by their low level of exploration activity and as a result offer excellent residual exploration potential. Rock, basal till and vegetation geochemical techniques applied in the vicinity of the Agassiz deposit indicate the presence of trace element dispersion halos associated with the mineralization. The halos define an exploration target larger than the mineralized zone. Gold occurrences within the two metallotects are described with emphasis on the Agassiz Au-Ag deposit . A wide range of gold occurrence-types is documented including syngencticstratabound , epigenetic-replacement and epigenetic-quartz vein .

THE British Columbia Coal Control was established in 1946 as a branch of the Department of Lands. Its functions are the administration of the Goal Act, the making of field and laboratory investigations bearing on the delineation and utilization of British Columbia coal deposits, and the dissemination of information concerning them. The Department of Lands in the Province of British Columbia retains and administers many of the Province's resources until such time as they are actively developed under the departments of Agriculture, of Forests, of Mines, etcc. The work of the Control is one of stock taking and appraising. We are picking up where the geological surveys leave off. In an effort to assist in the orderly, scientific development -of our excellent and extensive' ?Coat resources, we are bridging the gap between exploration and geological examination on the -one hand and mining on the other. All coal analyses required in the course of the investigations, together with? those requested by prospectors and others, are carried out in the very modern and efficient laboratories of the Coal, Petroleum, and Natural Gas Control. At its inception, the Coal Control began an investigation of coal seams in the Peace River area, specifically those contiguous to the Pine River valley about one hundred miles west of Dawson Creek. The occurrence of coal in the Peace River canyon, east of Hudson's Hope, bad been known since 1792, but the first record of production is for 1923.

"The Normetal mine is about 7 miles east of the Ontario-Quebec boundary, and 13 miles north of the town of Dupuy on the Canadian National railway. The mine workings are largely on lots 44 and 45 in the south half of range 10, Desmeloizes township.The surface outcrop is reported to have been discovered by a trapper previous to 1925, but the details are obscure. The property was originally owned by the Canadian Exploration Company of Amos, Quebec, and was later transferred to Abana Mines, Limited. The latter Company carried out underground work from two shafts down to the 550-foot level. The property was acquired by Normetal Mining Corporation in 1931 and was reopened in 1933, when development work was carried down to the 800-foot level. The mine was closed down in 1935 because metal prices did not justify production at that time. It was reopened early in 1937 and milling commenced in September of that year. To the end of 1945, a total of 1,497,- 169 tons of ore was milled from which was produced 184,533 tons of copper concentrates containing 84,738,368 lb. copper, 2,744,100 oz. silver, 26,230 oz. gold, and 153,524 tons of zinc concentrates containing 163,752,433 lb . zinc."

"In 2015 Vale’s Clarabelle Mill began the process change to enable a higher degree of Cu separation. The flowsheet modification was part of a complete divisional flowsheet change being implemented in Vale’s Sudbury Operations. This paper will centre on some of the Operational Readiness (OR) work, culminating in the commissioning of the circuit in March 2017. The emphasis will be on the implementation of an integrated test plan to prepare for the process flow change through the mill.BackgroundClarabelle Mill (CBM) began making a saleable Cu concentrate in 2006 with the installation of the Cu separation circuit. Typical separation rate was 35-40% of Cu in feed reporting to Cu concentrate based on a target Ni concentrate Cu:Ni target of 0.7-0.8. The remainder of the recovered Cu (55-60%) reported to Ni concentrate and was smelted through the Copper Cliff Smelter.In 2013 a capital project, Surface Facility Upgrade (SFU), was implemented to focus on matching the surface plants capacities with the future mine plan to maximize revenues. This was to be achieved by redistributing the metal flow, specifically Cu, through CBM to increase metal unit content through the Smelter. The amount of redistribution of Cu was determined to be based on maintaining a stable Cu to Ni ratio (Cu:Ni) in the Ni concentrate.The change in Cu:Ni ratio in the Ni concentrate would affect the Sudbury divisional flowsheet, and required process changes across the all of the surface plants. The detail that surrounds the flowsheet changes as a whole will not be discussed, but the outcome of the decisions plays a large role in the operational readiness interactions between the mill, its suppliers and its downstream customers."

Major Project Blues Over the last two decades, almost every major project has suffered significant cost overruns, significant schedule delays, and/or poor quality work. Exceptions are rare and most projects that tout being ?On Time and Under Budget? have re-cast schedules, significantly modified scope or revised base estimates. The problem isn?t new. In the late 1980?s the Rand Corporation published a study showing that 80% of all major projects had significant cost and schedule overruns. The problem is not restricted to the Canadian environment, or to a specific industry. It is a global problem.

The Na-feldspar orebodies in Sardinia occur along structures belonging to a regional ENE-WSW system that developed during the late stages of the Hercynian orogeny, and that was reactived during the Alpine orogeny. The main petrographic facies include granitoids, albitized granitoids, albitites (more or less rich in quartz), and albitites containing Mg minerals. Field observations and petrological and geochemical data point toward a metasomatic origin for the albitite orebodies. Albitization involved depletion of K from K-feldspar and biotite, dissolution of free quartz, and a lowering of Sr/Na2O and CaO/Na2O ratios in the protolith, under conditions of a positive thermal gradient. The absence of later K-metasomatism implies that, during a subsequent decline in temperature, the composition of the albitizing fuids was modified by an influx of meteoric or other waters. A mill model structure based on the population mass balance framework incorporating breakage characteristics, slurry and solids transport, product classification and discharge and energy consumption was reported in XXVII IMPC and named the Generic Tumbling Mill Model Structure Version I (GTMMS I). In this work, a new 4D (four dimensional) appearance function sub-model based on the experimental results of the JK Rotary Breakage Tester (JK RBT) was developed to describe the breakage characteristics and was applied to this new model structure. The newly developed 4D appearance function model has fewer fitting parameters and is more generic in nature. Most importantly, it is applicable to both high and low energy impact breakage. It is therefore much more versatile in comparison to the existing JKMRC t10- tn appearance function and the size-dependent JK M-p-q t10-tn appearance function. In addition, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) energy distribution model was integrated into the new model structure. With DEM results providing energy distribution information inside the mill directly, the selection function and the back-calculation method used in the existing JKSimMet modelling method are not needed in this model structure. With the above two revolutionary innovations, the previous model structure was upgraded to the Generic Tumbling Mill Model Structure Version II (GTMMS II). Furthermore, the new model structure is dynamic in nature with time-stepping technique for non-steady-state simulation. A case of the dynamic grinding of a SAG mill was studied to validate the GTMMS II. The model simulation results agreed well with the plant data. With the newly developed 4D appearance function model, the incorporation of DEM energy distribution and transport function, the GTMMS II is an important step forward towards mechanistic modelling of tumbling mills.

In 2004, Boliden Odda underwent an extensive modernisation project targeting mainly the leaching section of the plant. Direct leach technology was introduced as part of this project. The Direct Leach process, developed by Outokumpu, is an atmospheric oxidative leach of zinc sulphide concentrate. The effects of this new processing operation on behaviour of iron in the plant are discussed. As well, the filterability of the new residue on belt filters prior to its deposition in mountain caverns is also discussed. The solids from the direct leach process have been analysed by scanning electron microscopy, and the results of these analyses are presented.

THE mines of the Consolidated Copper and Sulphur Company, consisting of the Eust1s, the Albert, and the Capel mines, are situated w Ascot township, Quebec, about ten miles southeast of Sherbrooke, on the main line of the Quebec Central railway. Of these mines, only the Eustis is now producing, and it has been operated almost continuously for the past seventy years. Mining methods have been improved in recent years but are still old fashioned when compared with those employed in more modern and up-to-date mines. The ore is of milling grade and is mined for its copper and sulphur con-tent. Silver is present in small quantity, together with a trace of gold. The ore is mined by the shrinkage stope method. Pillars are frequently left as supports for the hanging-wall to prevent serious dilution of the ore and are sometimes recovered after the ore is drawn from the stope. Occasionally, small blacks of ore in close proximity to the shaft are mined by a cut-and-fill method. HISTORY ALBERT AND CAPEL MINES: The Albert and the Capel mines, originally known as the Capelton mine, were discovered in 1863 by George Capel (1). By the end of 1866 the Albert shaft had been sunk to a depth of 121 feet on an incline of about 30 degrees where a vein five feet thick was encountered. In 1879, these mines passed into the hands of G. H. Nichols and Company, by whom they were operated practically continuously until 1907. When mining operations ceased in that year, the shafts had reached depths on the incline of approximately 2,300 feet and 1,000 feet, respectively. These mines have been allowed to cave and fill with water and have been inaccessible for many years.

Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) have a ductile matrix containing ceramic particles, Due to their improved wear properties, Al?SiC composites have economical applications in many industrial uses where wear is a problem, One of the most serious difficulties in manufacturing Al-SiC composites is obtaining adequate 'wetting' of the particles by the melt. In this research work, a stir casting system was designed for the improved manufacturing Al-SiC composites, The effect of some production variables such as the addition of SiC particles to the aluminum melt on wettability, was also studied. The results showed that the manual addition of particles would not be successful in manufacturing and that a system of adding silicon carbide particles through controlled temperature, atmosphere and improved mixing was needed.

ABSTRACT The numerous global uranium deposits vary significantly in mineralogy, grade, and textural characteristics; therefore, information from traditional (or conventional) sources on the fundamentals of leaching uranium and gangue minerals is not always applicable when studying particular ores. Empirical studies can be effective in understanding leach systems and can lead to improvements in process design but there remains a lack of fundamental understanding necessary for ongoing process optimization as ore bodies continue to vary. ANSTO Minerals has undertaken a work program to address several fundamental questions about uranium leaching, including the unexpected impact for some ore types of leaching at high oxidation potential.

"IntroductionMANITOBA'S first recoverable oil was from the California Standard Daly 15-18 well in Lsd. 15, Sec. 18, Twp. 10, Range 27, W.P.M., completed early in 1951. This well also gave the first indications of commercial production in the Williston basin, which is centred in North Dakota and extends into southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba. Subsequent drilling in the Manitoba portion of the basin has revealed the presence of oil in more or less commercial quantities at various points in an area approximately four townships in width and eleven townships in length.Although completions are becoming fairlly widespread in the area,, the greatest activity is in the Virden district, with the focal point in the Daly field, approximately eight miles west •of Virden. This paper will deal with the various techniques used in the Daly field, where •completion problems have •been unusually troublesome. Techniques evolved there have already been used with success at other points in southwestern Manitoba.Daly FieldGeneralTo date, all production has been from the Mississippian limestone, which is encountered •at depths ranging from 2,300 to 2,500 feet. Pay thickness is •of the order of 100 feet. Core analyses indicate average porosity .of about 9 per cent but permeabilities, for the most part, are extremely low."

"High metal prices and advanced technology in open-pit mining methods have resulted in considerable interest in the development of large, low-grade mineral deposits. Brenda Mines Limited is presently testing such a deposit of copper-molybdenum mineralization near Penticton, British Columbia.The mineralization of economic interest at Brenda has a total metallic sulphide content of between 1 and 1.5 per cent. This sulphide content approaches the limits of detectability of standard geophysical methods. How-ever, due to a favourable geological environment, it has been possible to utilize the Induced Polarization Method to outline the mineralization at the Brenda property."

COMPLETED in November, 1943, at a cost of over $1,500,000, Elk River colliery of the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company, Limited, has been laid out and equipped for an ultimate annual production of 1,000,000 tons and replaces the recently closed Coal Creek plant, which has been operated by the Company for the past forty-five years. The project has involved the opening of mines in three seams, the construction of a complete set of colliery buildings, including a modern preparation plant of 360 tons per hour capacity, and the laying out of the necessary yard tracks and spur connecting the new development with the Company-owned Morrissey, Fernie and Michel railway, which, in turn, connects with the Canadian Pacific railway at Fernie. The colliery is three and a half miles east of Fernie, B.C., near the southern end of the Crow's Nest coal field, which contains the largest and most important body of coal in the Province of British Columbia. The coal-bearing horizon is the Kootenay formation, present in the form of a syncline covering an area of 230 square miles. Most of the coal seams occur in the lower 2,000 feet of the formation, the covering beds being largely coarse sandstones and conglomerates of great thickness, the presence of which accounts largely for the preservation of the coal measures. James McEvoy, in the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for the year 1900, states that the basin appears to contain a fairly constant coal content of nearly 172 feet in 23 seams of a thickness of one foot or over. Coal has been mined in the Fernie district since 1897 and the first shipments were made from Coal Creek colliery in the following year, over the then newly constructed British Columbia Southern railway. Since that time, a total of over 16,000,000 tons of coal has been produced, an average of 350,000 tons per year. The7ears of peak production were 1910, 1912, and 1913, with an all-time high of 924,000 tons in 1913. The lowest output in the history of Coal Creek was that for the year 1933, when only 60,340 tons were produced, the colliery being closed for some months. Present production from Elk River colliery averages 1,150 tons per day, the output being considerably less than it could be were sufficient man-power available.

IT can be truly stated that no branch of the engineering industry has progressed more rapidly in the last few years than that of welding. In spite of depressed economic conditions, this industry has continued to advance along scientific lines, replacing the old hit-and-miss method of welding. The development work is intensive, and increased activity is recorded in every sphere of the industry, new applications of existing methods, together with new processes, being added to those already proved in practice. The general acceptance of the welding processes can be measured by their utilization as a manufacturing tool in the metal-working industries. Many manufacturers have partially or wholly adopted welding. These concerns have on their staffs welding specialists, design engineers, and metallurgists, who are qualified to design and supervise the manufacture of welded parts, at a considerable saving to the purchaser. The steady, consistent, and sound growth of welding is based upon investigation of the fundamentals of the various processes, together with their proper application. The classification of welding processes varies in different countries. In Europe, they are divided into two main classes, namely, heterogenous and autogenous. In the former, the parts are joined, as a ruler without melting the edges, and by using as filler a metal different from that of the object welded. Such welding differs from soldering and brazing in that higher temperatures are required to effect the union of the parts. In autogenous welding, the parts are joined by melting of the edges, with or without the addition of a material similar to the parts being joined.

Shear zones are tabular tructures which tend to occur either discordantly within, or concordantly along the margins of, competent rock masse uch as plutons, sill or flows. They contain deformed equivalents of their host rock and are common sites for gold mineralization localized in tructure oriented y tematically relative to the shear zones and internal linear fabric. Apan from genetic implications, hear zone analysis proves useful in exploration for this type of deposit because the zones are generally wider and more continuous than associated mineralization and because there is an element of predictability to mineralization geometry (i.e. vein orientation. plunge).
