"In describing the alteration of porphyry systems, the term ""secondary K-feldspar"" appears to be an oversimplification. A better term would be ""alkali feldspar"" alteration, because in actual fact the replacement feldspars show gradational changes from an albite, which is important in some systems, to an alkali feldspar containing minor orthoclase molecule, to true orthoclase.There are several textural varieties of secondary alkali feldspar present in the porphyry systems studied from British Columbia, Australia and New Zealand. These include, in apparent increasing order of alteration intensity: clear albite (An10); patchwork albite (An5-10); chessboard albite (An0-10); ""irregular albite "" (An0Ab100 to Ab90Or10); untwinned ""anoralbite"" (Ab90Or10 – Ab70Or30); and orthoclase (Ab40Or60 - Or100)·The exploration significance of these varieties of alkali feldspar is that their gradation in composition, from sodic to potassic, may be linked to a corresponding increase in intensity of alteration. Thus, there is a tendency for more sodic alteration feldspars to characterize weak, sub-economic deposits, or the fringe zones of stronger deposits; the more potassic alteration feldspars may provide an exploration vector toward more highly mineralized zones."

"This paper presents regional radiometric gamma-ray spectrometry maps of Syria for total radioactivity (Ur) and surficial concentrations of equivalent uranium (eU). The maps were created by merging airborne and ground-based gamma-ray spectrometric survey datasets. On the regional radiometric eU map, eU anomalies are closely related to either phosphate and/or glauconite deposits. The Ur and eU maps delineate the boundaries of three phosphate deposits, close to the Palmyrides ridge, in the northern part of the Coastal Range and Syrian Desert. Scattered occurrences of uranium mineralization in other phosphate formations are attributed to secondary chemical and physical processes, rather than primary accumulation.RÉSUMÉ Cet article presente des cartes regionales radiometriques de spectrometrie gamma de la Syrie pour la radioactivite totale (Ur) et les concentrations en surface de l’equivalent en uranium (eU). Les cartes ont ete creees en combinant des ensembles de donnees, aeroportees et au sol, de releves de spectrometrie gamma. Sur la carte regionale radiometrique eU, les anomalies eU sont etroitement reliees aux gisements de phosphate et(ou) de glauconite. Les cartes Ur et eU delimitent les limites de trois gisements de phosphate, a proximite de la crete des Palmyrides, dans la partie nord de la chaine cotiere et du desert de Syrie. "In order to improve zinc plant productivity, areas of low efficiency were identified. As a result, solution purification was improved, additional dust precipitator capacity was made available and a new zinc casting plant was installed. The effects of these and other changes are discussed and the expenditure and benefits reviewed. HistoryThe operation of the Flin Flon metallurgical complex including an electrolytic zinc plant commenced in October 1930. The design of the zinc plant was based on that of the Commonwealth Mining and Smelting Company at Trail, British Columbia, the Anaconda Great Falls Montana Plant and the Electrolytic Zinc Company plant at Risdon, Tasmania.The plant began with a design capacity of 60 tons per day and currently produces 255 tons per day. Since plant start-up, approximately 3.5 million ton s of zinc metal have been produced, most of it exceeding special high-grade specifications.IntroductionThe facility incorporates the basic process steps of roasting, leaching, purification, electrowinning and casting. Figure I details the flowsheet. During the late 1970s, management recognized that in order for the zinc plant to continue operating, it was necessary to introduce cost-effective practices.Study groups, consisting of design engineers and operations personnel, were formed to investigate the details of plant revisions.The objectives were to improve productivity by reducing manual labour, reducing energy usage, increasing zinc recovery, increasing metal output and reducing costs.This paper details the changes made during the period 1979to 1986 and shows how these changes have affected the productivity and economics of the zinc plant operation."

Early History Probably the first use of nickel by man was in the fashioning of implements, and later swords, from nickel-bearing meteorites, masses of metal that have fallen from time to time at many points on the earth's surface and which consist normally of iron carrying substantial amounts of nickel. Meteorites were perhaps the first metal known to man. The falling star, sought out with fear overborne by curiosity, was found to be a better stone than the earth-given, truly a boon from the gods. Archeologists tell us there is good evidence that the ancient oriental peoples learned at an early date to make these stones into useful implements. The invincible blades of the great warriors of old in China, Persia, and in northern Europe, were Heaven-sent, a fable which sounds significant of meteoric iron. Probably some of the ancient swords of Khorassan and of Damascus were of meteoric nickel-bearing iron (1). Fifty centuries were to pass before men learned to isolate nickel and add it to iron to produce the same alloy for much the same purpose. Meanwhile, man had found another natural alloy of nickel, known first to the Chinese as paktong, or 'white copper.' It was obtained from complex copper-nickel sulphide ores of Yunnan in southern China. This metal was brought by caravan through India into Bactria, a country north of the Hindu-Kush mountains, in what is now known as Russian Turkestan. The earliest specimen extant is a Bactrian coin attributed to 235 B.C. The rough reddish-white metal was also sent in the form of triangular rings to Canton, where zinc ores were added and the whole smelted to a more malleable alloy, also known later as paktong. This alloy was the forerunner of German-or nickel-silver. Specimens of this alloy, wrought into ornamental candlesticks and boxes, were brought from Canton to Europe by the East India Company in the early days of the China trade. Paktong was highly prized for its beauty as well as its eastern origin in far-away China. By 1760 the unwrought metal was imported into England for domestic manufacture.

"HPAL and POX autoclave vapor-space gasses are vented through an autoclave PCV (Pressure Control Valve). The downstream steam-born mist of liquid droplets and solid particles travels in excess of 1000 m/s with megawatts of kinetic power at temperatures up to 160 C. The characteristics of downstream states often result in problems with corrosion, erosion, noise and vibration. Comprehension of those and related characteristics aids in improved pressure control, overpressure control and autoclave level control. We introduce compressible multiphase flow concepts and constructs germane to such flow including choked flow, continuous phase change, shock waves and supersonic flow plumes. Flow modeling based on first principles quantitatively predicts such flows providing a tool for component sizing and a method to estimate effects of water injection on flow. Insight deduced from modeling aids in mitigation of afore mentioned problems of which we share some from-site examples.INTRODUCTION First principles related to fluid thermodynamics and compressible flow have been employed akin to their application in the rocket industry. We will present the results of the application of those principles conceptually and authentically without mathematical rigour while using language of the pertinent disciplines. The autoclave (AC) vapor space over the slurry of a POX (Pressure Oxidation) or HPAL (High-Pressure Acid Leach) system (depicted in Figure 1) is vented via a PCV (pressure control valve) followed by certain ducting, and perhaps a nozzle, before exiting at atmospheric (typically) pressure. As indicated by its name the PCV controls the AC pressure as the flow control component of a pressure control loop."

Large-scale land reclamation has been undertaken in Singapore since the 1960s. In the early years, the fill materials excavated from the hills. In recent years, sea sand is the main source of the fill materials. The contractors used to import the sea sand from the neighbouring countries such as Indonesia. However, in early 2000, the sea sand import from Indonesia and Malaysia was banned. Cambodia, Myanmar, and Philippine therefore became the alternative sources for sea sand. Distance between the jobsite and these countries is over 1,200 km, and transporting sea sand from these areas became a critical issue that could affect the contractor?s performance. Figuring out the right combination of transportation means for a longdistance sand transportation would be challenging because of uncertain situations. We developed a stochastic simulation model, using ARENA, to figure out the right quantity of small-size barges, bulk carriers, and loading/unloading equipment, which could help project managers yield the most production for sand transportation. This paper presents how we developed the simulation model, how it was applied to figure out the optimum combination among various size barges, different bulk carriers, and various types of loading/unloading equipment, for the sand transportation project in Singapore.

"Aluminum sheets (AA1199, AA8006, and AA5754) were processed by accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) in the temperature range from 20 to 350°C. The microstructure of the sheets was characterized by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy and electron backscattered diffraction. Mechanical properties were monitored by hardness measurements and tensile tests. Increasing strain (number of ARB cycles) led to incremental development of lamellar microstructure with a decrease of the spacing between high-angle grain boundaries in the normal direction of sheets. ARB process produced an important increase of strength while maintaining thickness and relatively high ductility, without accenting of the anisotropy of mechanical properties of sheets. The level of hardening decreased with the processing temperature and at 300 and 350°C ARB caused even the softening of the material due to the recovery of the deformed microstructure or partial recrystallization during heating to ARB processing temperature.INTRODUCTION Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) is a technique of grain refinement by severe plastic deformation (SPD) proposed by Saito et al. (1999). One ARB cycle consists in sheet cutting, surface treatment, stacking of two pieces, heating (optional), and rolling with 50% reduction in thickness. Since the sheet thickness remains unchanged by this cycle, ARB processing can be repeated as many times as desired. The goal of ARB is to impose an extremely high plastic strain on the material, resulting in structural refinement and strength increase without changing specimen dimensions. After several cycles, ultra-fine grained (UFG) materials with high strength and relatively high ductility are produced. An advantage of this method is that it does not require any special equipment as other SPD methods such as equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) (Valiev & Langdon, 2006), high pressure torsion (HPT) (Valiev et al., 2000), or cyclic extrusion and compression (CEC) (Richert et al., 1999), but only a conventional rolling mill and so it is seen as an economically viable and industrially scalable processing route. ARB processing has been successfully applied to various kinds of metallic materials at room or elevated temperatures (Tsuji, 2005). Besides processing single metals and alloys, ARB has also been used for creating ultra-fine grained and nanograined metallic composites (Wu et al., 2010; Qu et al., 2014)."

"The electrolytic tankhouse at CCR was recognized by management as lagging behind modem refineries in terms of productivity, energy efficiency and controls. The operation was also burdened by high maintenance costs of cells, floors and electrolyte recirculation systems.A bench marking program was started in 1986 to evaluate processes and other technology by visiting major copper refineries in North America, Europe and Japan. The basic principles necessary to optimize the operation were defined, and a program calledCCR 2000 was prepared for approval of the necessary capital investments.This paper describes the results obtained to date and outlines the remaining work to complete the modernization program, in particular, the control of electrolytes, the elimination of the Baltimore groove and studies to modernize the stripping operation or adopt permanent cathode technology.IntroductionThe CCR Refinery of Noranda Copper Smelting and Refining (Noranda Minerals Inc.) , in Montreal East, is one of the world 's largest custom copper and precious metal refineries with a capacity to refine 350000 tonnes of copper per year. The silver refinery, which treats the copper tankhouse anode slime, foreign slime and precious metal ingots, produces 800 000 kg of silver, 26 000 kg of gold and 3800 kg of platinum-palladium concentrate annually. Copper anodes are received from the Horne Smelter at Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, and Mines Gaspe Division in Murdochville, Quebec. CCR also refines anodes from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. in FIin Flon, Manitoba, and remelts anode scrap along with blister and purchased copper scrap ."

Why is culture important for mining and mineral corporations in their CSR initiatives? Because culture is the foundation of your organizational identity. Understanding the impact of identity, for an organization and for each individual, will provide a description of the experiences and values that affect every work placed interaction, with your clients, with colleagues, with suppliers, with the community of the host country. Each one of us sees and evaluates the world through our perceptions. Through these perceptions we give meaning; how we view and understand our reality which sets the tone for how relationships are built. This is what I call building the ?invisible asset?. Identity, experiences, values and beliefs are invisible commodities, locating them can be as difficult as finding a mine. But if they are not located, the commodity does not have value. Just like in the work we do in our industry. For example when you are working in an underground gold mine and the vein is lost, you keep on working and trying to find the vein; time passes, money is being used and no results. You decide to bring an expert on this type of deposits who gave you directions that allowed you to find the vein. To be a responsible citizen of the world and to set the foundation for a better world, it is imperative to go deep, as deep as your next drilling program, because only there and then, can you develop the cultural sensitivity and the ability to become an agent of change for responsible, sustainable and profitable businesses.

"The paper identifies two of the main problems encountered in recent hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver: firstly, the plant recovery is lower than anticipated from the testwork; secondly, the metallurgical accounting figures cannot be reconciled.The principal reasons for the plant recovery being lower than the testwork are discussed, together with solutions that can minimize these problems both during the design stage and during the plant operation after the problems have manifest themselves.The reasons for the difficulties in metallurgical accounting are analyzed by reviewing the various components of the plant figures. Recommended solutions are given for minimizing this problem and the realities of obtaining accurate figures are discussed.IntroductionThe start-up over the last few years of new hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver has brought to the surface again a number of problems. Most of the problems have existed for some time and they manifest themselves mainly in two ways. "This paper describes the development and application of single-stage fluidized bed continuous ion exchange to the following processes: removal of base metals from mine water; cyanide removal from gold mill waste; uranium removal from sulphuric acid leach liquor; and uranium removal from mine water. IntroductionThe recovery of metals by fixed bed ion exchange has been practiced for many years. However, the operation has been semi-continuous and can only treat clarified liquors. Substantial savings could be made if the operation were continuous, thus reducing the resin inventory, and if the costly filtration and clarification steps could be eliminated. Work has been in progress over the past twenty-five years on the recovery of metals from unfiltered ore leach slurries, heap leach liquors and mine drainage waters containing a small amount of suspended solids. In the case of dilute waste solutions, with suspended matter and high flow rates, filtration is usually prohibitively expensive.Continuous ion exchange operation using fluidized beds has made it possible to reduce considerably the resin inventory and to allow the treatment of unclarified liquors and slurries. The subject has been reviewed on several occasions (1. 2. 3, 4). Although fluidized beds in multi-stage columns are an improvement over previous resin-in-pulp treatment, they have complicated internal structure and I or involved automatic control systems to move the resin stages.Slater and Prud'homme performed studies on multi-stage fluid beds, and concluded that the performance of single, deep fluidized beds of resin with continuous or semi-continuous flow of both phases would be worth investigating, particularly in the case of very dilute metal solutionsoi, A pilot plant was designed and built at CANMET in a cooperative project with Dr. Slateroi. The use of deep fluidized beds of resin (with a large height/diameter ratio) for treating dilute solutions has the attraction of engineering simplicity. Extreme simplicity of equipment design is considered of paramount importance when treating, for example, mine waters at high flow rates, possibly of the order of several million gallons per day. This paper describes the development of the concept of single-stage fluidized bed continuous ion exchange arid reviews the pilotplant development of processes for the treatment of base metal mine water, cyanide waste water, uranium leach liquor and uranium mine water."

"The Fond-du-Lac uranium deposit is located on the northern rim of the Athabasca Basin. The uranium mineralization is, for the most part, confined to the Athabasca Group, which is underlain by pre-Helikian metamorphic rocks of the Western Craton.The deposit is characterized by a remarkable train of mineralized glacial erratics which led to the original discovery. The mineralization is present as a ""high-grade"" core and a diffuse ""low-grade"" aureole. The ""high-grade"" core occurs as a stockwork of steeply dipping pitchblende veins which strike N 50°E. Hematite, siderite and secondary silicate are also abundant. The ""low-grade"" aureole contains uraniferous goethite, argillaceous material and rare carbon buttons. Recent alteration to coffinite has taken place along the margins of pre-existing ore minerals.The ""high-grade"" core is 390 m long and 10 to 40 m wide, and is surrounded by an irregularly shaped zone of ""low-grade"" mineralization with a similar length and a width of up to 350 m.Comparing the Fond-du-Lac deposit to other unconformity-type deposits, several important differences can be noted:1. Ninety per cent of the ore is above the unconformity, in the Athabasca sandstone.2. The deposit is not associated with underlying graphitic rocks or a major structure.3. The clay-rich alteration zone is not extensive around the Fond-du-Lac deposit.Although there are differences with other Athabasca unconformity-type deposits, the high-grade portion below the unconformity suggests a common origin.The ore deposit is postulated to have been formed from uranium-bearing solutions which entered the stockwork of fractures. Following the reduction in part of these solutions by pre-existing carbonaceous matter and pyrite and/or chemical reaction with pre-existing hematite, deposition continued as a result of decreasing temperature and pressure. Subsequently, minor supergene redistribution of the uranium has taken place."

"Inco's Automated Haulage Truck System (AHT) is a revolutionary automatic guided vehicle that performs all load, haul and dump operations without human intervention. The high level of sophistication and the short period it has been in operation has only allowed a select few Inco personnel to become familiar with the ART operation and maintenance. As an aid to operations an expert system using the knowledge gained from the experienced specialists was implemented in the field.The AHT operating and maintenance assistance expert system will reason through the information given, arrive at conclusions and give advice to operations, technical and management personnel. It will provide comprehensive real-time troubleshooting assistance for the hydraulic, electrical and mechanical subsystems of the ART. The ART expert system has many benefits to Inco which include increased skill levels of ART operations and maintenance personnel, reduction in ART downtime, standardization of troubleshooting procedures and reduction in ART operating and maintenance costs. In the future, the expert system application will be linked to SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), maintenance and statistical software to display current and historical trends of variables from a centralized historical database. As well, a wide variety of features will be integrated into the system including AutoCad drawings, graphics, photographs, voice and video capabilities."

Steels in high variety have been providing strength and ductility for more than a century mainly through complex heat treatments following hot shaping. The economical and sustainable goal was a steel with the two operations combined through applying knowledge of dislocations and strengthening mechanisms aided by new mechanical and microstructural techniques. Primary hot reversing-mill rolling produced static recrystallization (SRX) between every pass to significantly finer grain size. Hot torsion showed that with lay-on temperature and rate of reduction suited to gradual precipitation of minor additions of Nb, the austenite grains would become highly pancaked; the existence of very fine subgrains along the grain boundaries (GB) could be deduced from tests on stainless austenite. The HSLA strip had to be water-jet cooled immediately to prevent SRX at austenite GB and ensuring complete transformation to ferrite avoiding grain growth after coiling. Confirmation on old mills and successful product led to the design of more flexible mills for wider range of compositions and products. A significant one was auto bumpers that reduced crash damage. More crack-resisting compositions were developed for strip welding into line pipe for arctic oil transport. Lower metal consumption and easier fabrication has resulted in more sustainable welded bridging.

"The extractive metallurgy of gold is largely controlled by mineralogical factors such as the presence of refractory gold, particle size, gangue mineral associations, presence of preg-robbers, oxygen and cyanide consumers, and locking characteristics in base metal sulphides. Light microscopy and automated mineralogy techniques are regularly used to characterise the effect of these variables on gold recovery. However, despite their widespread application there are a range of limitations when grades are low. Typically, the analysis of low-grade samples requires the preparation and analysis of numerous polished blocks. This is often costly and time consuming, with complexities regarding analysing statistically representative particle quantities and problems overcoming stereological bias. This is compounded by the “nugget” effect and high tenor nature of gold mineralisation. X-ray Microscopy techniques have the potential to overcome many of these problems, in particular the statistical representivity of analysis, removing stereological bias and effectively locating phases that are present in ultra-trace proportions. In this paper we outline the potential benefits of employing X-ray Microscopy (XRM) in characterising gold losses from a typical Cu-Au porphyry project, which were illusive in 2D based analysis. The talk will also outline additional application areas of XRM within the extractive value chain."

Historically, the gold industry has used processes that required minimum amounts of water to treat and recover gold at locations around the world. Examples are dry grinding for refractory gold treatment in the late 1800s and early 1900s and dry blowing in arid/desert regions to recover alluvial gold. In recent times, new dry processing equipment has been developed and include equipment such as air tables and jigs. Researchers have also modified a Knelson concentrator to concentrate gold from dry solids. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) with air classifiers are used to treat industrial minerals and pilot trials have shown that the technology can be applied to comminute refractory gold ores ahead of roasting. Dry stacked tailings is being applied on gold mines to reduce overall water consumption This paper will review the available technologies that in combination may be able to substantially reduce the quantity of water used in the processing of gold ores.INTRODUCTION Water makes up most of the world: the planet is 75% water. Some 97.5% is saline water largely in the oceans, so that only 2.5% is fresh water and useful for human needs. The demand for water is driven primarily by population and concomitant economic growth. Overall, some 70% of the water withdrawn from the environment is used in agriculture, 20% by industry, 7% by households and 3% for mining (Brown, 2003: Maupin et al., 2010). Whilst the water needs of the mining industry are minor compared to those of agriculture, an operating mine requires a relatively large quantity of water on a daily basis to carry out operations. Mining activities are often located in remote, arid environments, with limited access to water. There are a multitude of water resources available to the mining industry for its needs. However, much of this water is saline and over the last two decades there has been a continual decline in water quality (i.e. salinity has increased). In today‘s world, there are enormous internal and external pressures to reduce water consumption at a mine, and/or alternatively use water not considered a resource by the local community. Strategies to meet these objectives can be achieved by implementing good water management practices, by recycling process water, reducing water losses by evaporation and seepage (i.e. by increasing and improving dewatering practices) and employing new technologies such as dry stacking and dry processing (Dunne, 2010)."

This paper explores the financial impact of the initial version of the Saskatchewan Potash Reserve Tax; first, a one; and second, in conjunction with the other taxes affecting the industry's profitability. A though the introduction of the Reserve Tax is shown to lead to a substantia increase in a hypothetical firm's effective tax burden, the more unusual outcomes frequently attributed to this levy on y occur after the imposition of other non-provincial tax rulings. Despite this qualification, the results obtained suggest that the Reserve Tax undoubted y acted as a catalyst in the polarization of attitudes during the ear y period of industry/government confrontation
