"Depuis 1906, près de 130 gisements ont été découverts dans la inture archéenne polymétallique (Cu, Zn, Au, Ag) du nord-ouest québécois. Une étude régionale du développement du potentiel inier est présentée puis détaillée pour quatre secteurs: Rouyn-Dranda, Val d'Or-Malartic, Bousquet-Cadillac et Matagami.L' analyse est conduite a l' aide des paramètres suivants: temps, méthodes de découverte, profondeur des gisements et poids métal. Les courbes cumulatives illustrant le nombre de gisements découverts fonction du temps montrent une forme générale en ""S"" dont les i'iations de pentes correspondent aux variations dans les taux de couverte. Initiation, réalisation et stabilisation des cycles de décourté sont ainsi mis en évidence. Deux ""bourns miniers"", de 1922 à 1945 et de 1955 à 1965, rassemblent 72 % des mines identifiées sqú à présent.La plupart des mines sont trouvées en subsurface: 90% ont leur mmet entre 0 et 100 mètres de profondeur dont 70 % entre 0 et 10 êtres. Dans le temps, il y a d' abord récolte par prospection puis par ophysique et enfin, développement progressif du potentiel en proeur avec des méthodes composites. Environ 80% du poids métal extrait de 4 camps miniers, couvrant 8% de Ia surface régionale quelques gros gisements dominent /a production.Ces données permettent de proposer une nouvelle approche pour analyse d' une région minière:La distribution de Ia profondeur des gisements en fonction du temps est indicatrice de la maturité d' un camp minier et peut servir a évaluer son potentiel résiduel.L’analyse des courbes en ""S"" permet d’extrapoler les taux de succès relies aux différentes méthodes et met en relief le rôle crucial de I' innovation dans I' exploration.ABSTRACTSince 1906, some 130 deposits have been discovered in the Archean polymetallic belt of northwestern Quebec. In this paper, the development of the mining potential is analyzed at the regional scale and for the following mining camps: Rouyn-Noranda, Val d'OrMalartic, Bousquet-Cadillac and Matagami.The analysis is based on the following parameters: time, discovery method, depth and weight of metal extracted. Curves showing the cumulative number of deposits discovered as a function of time are ""S"" shaped with slope variations corresponding to changing discovery rates. Initiation, realization and stabilization of discovery cycles are thus well represented. Two ""mining booms"", 1922 to 1945 and 1955 to 1965, account for 72% of the mines identified to date.Most exploitable orebodies have been found near the surface: 90 %have their top between 0 and 100 meters, including 70% between 0 and 10 meters. Early discoveries were made by prospecting, followed by geophysics while the progressive development of the depth potential is being realized by a combination of methods. Approximately 80 %of the metal extracted comes from four mining camps which cover 8% of the area, but most of the production can be allributed to only a few large deposits. Based on these data, a new approach to the analysis of a mining region is proposed:1) The distribution showing deposit depth versus time is indicative of the maturity of a mining camp and can serve to evaluate its remaining potential.2) The ""S"" curve analysis can be used to extrapolate the success rate of a specific exploration method and also stresses the crucial role of innovation in exploration."

"Since the Mathew's method for open stope design was first proposed by Golder Associates in 1980 it has been applied at a number of mine sites in Canada. The initial hypothesis was based on a relatively small amount of data and the intervening period has allowed the collection of a significant amount of new data to test the validity of the method.This paper examines a brief history of the evolution of rock mass classification systems to provide background and emphasize their empirical and non-rigorous approach. It also presents the new data which appear to indicate that the initial hypothesis was reasonably good. The modification to the original graph proposed by Potvin is discussed as well as the applicability of the method to predicting the onset of caving. The original graph has been updated and has been subdivided into four zones described as ""stable""; ""potentially unstable""; ""potential major failure""; and ""potential caving"". The method is recommended as a useful open stoping design tool provided it is recognized that it is not a rigorous design method.Finally the paper proposes a recommended approach for application of the method by would-be users and addresses some typical pitfalls that may be encountered."

The development of welded pipe has paralleled the general industrial development and, in particular, that of the petroleum industry. The petroleum industry's need for high-grade, economical pipeline material to make many 'of its projects feasible has been a significant factor in the development of light-wall, high-grade welded pipe. The modern welding processes, such as high-frequency, electric resistance, flash, submerged arc, etc., have some basically different characteristics. The modern high-frequency weld mill is a complex of specialized equipment that is integrated into a production unit. Each component in the unit performs a specific function in the production process. Quality control must be built into the process on an operating basis and, to maintain the quality required for pipeline standards, must be more than a policing operation. The further development of the welded pipe industry will be determined by changing and increasing demands. The technical and economic views and requirements that will influence the development have to be resolved.

"THE MISSION TO Offshore Scotland was in my opinion a very worthwhile venture, as it indicated the scope of the offshore oil and gas business and how we might exploit it to the fullest here in Nova Scotia - if our offshore fields eventually become producing fields. The writer was able to attend a considerable number of lectures and as a result gained some valuable know-how on the engineering design, financing and operation of the North Sea oil industry. There are many new fields of technology that had to be developed to overcome the North Sea's hostile environment and a great deal of the same technology will have to be developed to win oil and gas from our continental shelf. The visit left me with several impressions, which in the main are:(1) The high order of investment required to develop offshore oil. The investment ranges from 10 to 20 times that required for a similar output on land. Each barrel of oil costs on the average of about $2,- 500 per barrel per day.(2) Because of the high investments required, before the first oil is produced the field must be brought into production at the earliest possible date and initial lead time from decision to production is less than four years. In the British Petroleum field, working at a depth of 450 feet will require an investment of $900,000,000 to develop a production of 400,000 bbl per day. (3) The size and complexity of equipment required is beyond anything ever imagined. Problems which must be overcome are such factors as water depth, wind velocities, wave height, wave period, long periods of darkness, low temperatures, distance from land, and fog."

The behaviour of minerals during flotation of a fine-grained pyrite-rich base metal ore was investigated by studying the feeds. concentrate and tailings from every flotation cell in the mill of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corp. Ltd. Bathurst. New Brunswick. The samples were analyzed for Zn, Pb, Cu. Fe, Ag. Sb, Sn, Bi, In. Hg, Mo and As. Mass balances were computed and recoveries of all metals from each cell. from each circuit and from the mill were calculated. The percentages of sphalerite. galena and chalcopyrite occurring as free grains in each product were determined with an image analyser, as were size analyses for free mineral grains and middling particles, and compared with screen analyses. The results show that the behaviour of minerals is defined much better by the recovery of free mineral grains than by the recovery of elements. The recovery of free sphalerite in the zinc circuit is 96 wt %, whereas Zn recovery from the same circuit is 88 wt %. the difference being due to unliberated sphalerite. The recovery of free sphalerite from the mill feed is 88 wt % and Zn 78 wt %. The recovery of free galenafrom the mill feed is 88 wt % and Pb 64 wt %. The recovery of free chalcopyrite is 75 wt % and Cu 45 wt %. Size analyses show that more sphalerite and chalcopyrite can be liberated by regrinding. but the galena is so fine grained that regrinding would not necessarily improve liberation. Silver occurs mainly in tetrahedrite and galena; the main loss in the tailings is due to large (+ 26 um) and small (-1 um} free and unliberated tetrahedrite grains.

"The operation of flotation circuits is often regarded as a combination of art and science. Expert systems offer a method by which the art may be captured and supervisory control of flotation circuits fully realized. Operating knowledge, the art, can be consistently employed to enhance regulatory control through the judicious application of an expert system. Using an expert system, a supervisory control routine was developed, and success- fully implemented, in the copper flotation circuit at Brenda Mines Ltd.The expert system ran in conjunction with regulatory PI controllers on a personal computer. The expert system received assays via an on-stream analyzer and adjusted regulatory loop set points as required in real-time. From its commissioning in November, 1989, to the end of the mine 's operation in June, 1990, it was enthusiastically embraced by the operators and attained operating levels superior to those achievable manually.IntroductionExpert system (ES) software springs from research into artificial intelligence and is currently making significant inroads into business and industry. ES proponents make many attractive claims; they are a means of capturing the knowledge of experts and they can be programmed by non-programmers. To date, most uses of this software in the process industry are in off-line applications, meaning that the applications are not tied directly to operating (on-line) environments. Moreover, in on-line environments, they are typically employed as advisors and only suggest changes. Human operators are required to close-the-loop to the process. Yet, an ES should be applicable to operating environments and, if the claims of the proponents are valid, should also be better than existing tools. As an intelligent controller an ES must use the knowledge of experienced operators, apply it directly to a process and do this without the intervention of human operators. On-line applications have been successfully employed in the closed loop control of SAG circuits (Herbst et al., 1989) and flotation circuits (Hales, 1989). Harris and Kosick (1988)detail an implementation for flotation control at the Polaris Mine."

Extensive experimental observations have been performed around drifts and shafts at the Meuse Haute-Marne (North-Eastern France) Underground Research Laboratory (URL) to assess the extent and pattern of the induced fracture networks in Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. Two types of fractures can be distinguished, namely; shear (mode II) and extension unloading (mode I) fractures. The main goal of the present paper is to provide insights on the extent of damaged zone around the drifts by numerical simulations. A two-step approach is considered. First, 2D elastic calculations are performed for simulating the excavation of a drift following the direction of the major in situ horizontal stress. The evolution of the stress and strain tensors around drifts are calculated by applying an elliptic convergence function on the drift wall. Two failure criteria are then verified for the induced damage. An equivalent strain and an elastic energy based damage criteria are considered. The obtained results show that the employed simplified approach provides rather good results for the extent of the damaged zone for drifts parallel to major horizontal stress. However, post-processing elastic results leads to overestimating the vertical extent of the damage zone and underestimating its lateral extent, where the in situ stress state is quasi-isotropic in a section of drift. Nevertheless, the obtained results show that an energy based damage criterion could be considered as a potential way for reproducing the extent of the damaged zones if a convergence function can be defined for the drift.

The nickel laterite industry is divided into two camps when it comes to the grade of the ferronickels produced. One group, led by Falcondo and Cerro Matoso, markets high-grade ferronickels in the range of 35 to 40% nickel, while another group, led by SLN and the Japanese smelters, favour lower grades in the range of 20 to 25%. Because the ores processed by these smelters vary widely in terms of nickel content and iron to nickel ratios, it is probably more accurate to classify these smelters in terms of their iron recovery: Falcondo and Cerro Matoso smelt at lower reduction potentials and thus recover only 15 to 30% of the iron in their ores, while SLN and the Japanese smelters are very reducing and recover 45 to 65% of their iron. Low reductions generally imply higher slag losses and lower nickel recoveries, but also lower power and reductant requirements; higher reductions, the reverse. The question is, therefore, whether an economically optimum ferronickel grade exists for processing any given ore. This paper proposes a methodology for determining this optimum grade and concludes that nickel laterite smelters should favour low reductions and production of high-grade ferronickels.

Our planes have ranged from the Alaskan boundary on the west to the Labrador coast on the east, and from the Transcontinental railway north to the Arctic circle. Our prospectors, carried on trips of hundreds, and occasionally thousands, of miles, have gone over large sections of country which were never before explored, and at the end of the prospecting season the Company finds itself in possession of several groups of important gold claims, which look most promising. In addition to this, we have been in contact with deposits of almost every known mineral.

ABSTRACT The Goldex mining and milling complex is operated by Agnico-Eagle and is located in the Abitibi greenstone region of northwestern Quebec, Canada. Commercial production started in 2008. Average gold recovery is 93.5% with approximately 68% of gold recovery coming from the gravity circuit. During the first three years of production, three gravity audits were carried out to optimize performance of the gravity circuit. This paper presents results of the audits and the development of a model linking gravity and overall gold recovery, and outlines improvements made to increase gravity performance and reduce operating costs.

The Cornwallis Fold Belt in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago contains numerous Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) Zn- Pb occurrences and the world-class Polaris deposit. The occurrences are mainly hosted by the dolostone in the Thumb Mountain Formation which spreads over 25000 km2. Success in exploration requires further understanding of the genesis of these occurrences and an assessment of their parentage with the giant Polaris deposit. Syn-sulfide dolomites in regional occurrences share C-O-Sr isotopic characteristics similar with Polaris dolomites, indicating warm basinal brines enriched in 87Sr. The dolomites and sphalerites contain fluid inclusions with ice-melting temperature between ?45° and ?25°C, which is significantly lower than for most MVT districts in the world (?30° and ?10°C). These characteristics indicate that all the Cornwallis occurrences were produced by fluids of the same sources and/or aquifers. The deposit size was largely controlled by the rate and duration of the metal-carrying fluid flow, and by the availability of reduced sulfur at the site of mineralization.

The paper reviews the back-ground leading to the invention, discusses the process chemistry and historically tracks the commercial development. Engineering and cost considerations are presented.IntroductionThe year 1994 was particularly significant in terms of the technical and business development of the INCO SO2/AIR cyanide destruction process. The year marked a decade of service to the world mining community since INCO acquired the Canadian patent in 1984. In that time period, the technology had become widely recognized as the state-of-the-art process in the field of cyanide detoxification and today we enjoy the distinction of having licensed the process at over 50 project sites worldwide. The application for the process has mostly been in the mining industry in precious metal recovery plants where it offers treatment for a wide range of waste streams such as: CIP/CIL slurries, Merrill-Crowe barren bleed solutions and/or re-pulped filter cakes, tailings pond water recycle or discharge, make-up water to flotation circuits and feed to underground backfill plants. The process also applies to the treatment of high cyanide rinsewaters from metal plating shops. More recently the process is being applied to the rinsing and abandonment of heap leach pads where it has proven to be a very cost-effective application of the INCO process. The distinct advantages that have led to the success of the process are the ability to work on slurries as well as solutions and the significantly low cost of sulphur dioxide products. The process is safe and easy to manage and uses all forms of SO2(liquid, gas or salts) which gives the process tremendous versatility with respect to geographic application. "Magnetic fields affect the growth of cultured cells and plants; however, limited information exists about their effects on vegetation performing environmental remediation. Constructed wetland mesocosms treating hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater exposed to low-intensity magnetic fields (60 Hz, 56.5 × 10-6 Tesla) produced 100% more biomass than the unexposed control. Nonetheless, they removed only 43 ± 27% of Cr(VI), compared to 60 ± 21% for the control. A Cr(VI) reduction expression was developed as a function of the magnetic field. The design and operation of constructed wetlands to treat mining wastewater can be corrected for magnetic field effects.RÉSUMÉ Les champs magnétiques affectent la croissance des cellules et des plantes cultivées; toutefois, il existe peu d’information quant à leurs effets sur la végétation utilisée à des fins d’assainissement environnementale. Les mésocosmes des marais artificiels traitant des eaux usées, contenant du chrome hexavalent (Cr(VI)), exposés à des champs magnétiques de faible intensité (60 Hz, 56,5 × 10-6 Tesla) ont produit 100 % plus de biomasse que le contrôle non exposé. "Hot-dip galvanizing is a common procedure used to protect structural steels from corrosive environments. However, in a construction project involving welded structural steel platforms by a Canadian steel structures company, numerous connections were found with large cracks in the welded corner joints and T-joints after galvanizing. Historically, in other similar projects by the same industry partner, cracking did not occur making this an unforeseen and new phenomenon. The project explored the mechanical properties of the base material, the thermal stresses induced by the hot-dip galvanizing, and the fracture surface of the cracks. A key feature to note, the fracture surface showed intergranular cracking with no plastic deformation. Lab testing showed the base material exhibited intergranular brittle behavior when heated and fractured at the galvanizing temperature. The transition to a brittle fracture mode is due to temper embrittlement and the segregation of elements in the grain boundaries.INTRODUCTION Galvanization is a common practice for protecting steel structures from the corrosive environment. Hot-dip galvanizing is the most common approach to bonding the zinc layer to the steel, and it is highly cost effective. In the case of welded structures, it is common to do the hot-dip galvanizing process after welding. This is so the protective layer can be applied to the structure as a whole and over the welds. In a recent construction project carried out in industry, a steel frame platform structure measuring approximately 3 m x 7 m was galvanized after welding fabrication. The structure was built of CSA G40.21 350W and CSA G40.20/G40.21 300W plain carbon steels and welded using a metal core arc welding process for the flanges and a flux core arc welding process for the webs of the beams. Due to their size, the platforms underwent a double-dip galvanizing process meaning half of the structures were submerged in the molten zinc path while the other half was exposed to the ambient air. This was repeated for the remaining side. Shortly after the galvanizing process was completed, numerous large cracks were found in the welded joints. Given there was no history of weld cracks after galvanizing in previous similar frames that were double dipped, this failure posed a new and curious problem."

"Spent auto-catalyst is a promising secondary resource of platinum group metals (PGMs), which are being extensively used in automobiles catalytic converters to control the hazardous gaseous emissions (CO, NOx and hydrocarbons). Several pyro or hydrometallurgical routes has been employed to recover PGMs from such spent materials but there is no proper process for recovering the other constituents metals. Therefore, it causes the loss of other major constituents like, Al and Mg along with rare earth metal Ce. In the present study, we investigate the dissolution of Al and Mg using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) roasting followed by a sulfuric acid (H2SO4) leaching; thereby concentrating the PGMs and Ce in leached residues. The effect of roasting temperature, time and amount of NaOH were varied. Subsequently, the dissolution behavior of metals in H2SO4 as a function of acid concentration was investigated from the roasted samples. At an optimal condition for roasting at 600°C with 1:1 NaOH-to-catalyst ratio and 60 min duration, the maximum of Al and Mg were dissolved in 1 M H2SO4 solution at ambient temperature (~25°C). Thus obtained leached residues containing enriched PGMs and Ce content can be treated separately for the recovery of these high-value metals.INTRODUCTION Spent auto-catalyst has been considered as a potential resource for recovering the platinum group metals (PGMs) (Jha et al., 2013). The commonly used auto-catalyst is made of cordierite (2MgO.2Al2O3.5SiO2) in which the chloro complexes of PGMs are impregnated onto the surfaces of porous washcoat of alumina substrate (Aberasturi et al., 2011). The average concentration of PGMs in ore are 2-4 g/ton for Pt, 7-2 g/ton for Pd and 0.2-0.5 g/ton for Rh, whereas, an individual catalytic converter weighing about 1 - 2 kg contains on average 1.56 g Pt, 0.62 g Pd and 0.156 g Rh (Upadhyay et al., 2013). Moreover, recovery of PGMs from spent auto-catalyst offers other advantages like, simple process, low cost and less pollution, as compared to recovery from primary resources (Dong et al., 2015).Therefore, technologies to recover PGMs from spent auto-catalyst has become attractive in the recent past and their recycling contribution has been accounted for 35% Pt, 26% Pd and 36% Rh of the quantity consumed in the production of auto-catalysts (Johnson Matthey, 2016)."

In the spring of 2010 double refractory ores from historical stockpiles were processed through Barrick's Goldstrike pressure oxidation facility, thereby providing preg robbing feeds for a variety of metallurgical testwork. This paper describes the effects of amount, type, place and time of addition of activated carbons on CIL gold recovery and shows that native carbon in plant PDX'ed discharge solids can still preg rob gold loaded activated carbon.

Modification of the blasting process considers that any increase in the energy consumption generates greater benefits if done in the later stages (associated with a larger decrease in energy consumption). Therefore, although the blasting cost is doubled, generating a greater proportion of fines in addition to a weaker ore (because with greater loads and appropriate distribution of explosives a greater number of internal cracks is generated), the reduction of the unit cost that occurs in the grinding stages (SAG and ball mills) generates a positive balance in the overall size reduction process. Codelco Chile, Division Andina, has developed an extensive experimental plan to evaluate the concept of blasting modification applying greater energy. This was implemented in two stages, each including a specific mine sector: La Union and Don Luis. This paper reviews the experience of implementing such blasting modifications at the La Union mine and its impact on the design concepts and the operation of the SAG mill plant
