"As mining has evolved over a century, so are the challenges associated with mining. Mining of complex ore bodies at greater depths is a major challenge requiring high capital and operating costs due to remote locations, high energy costs, water quality and complex environmental issues. In addition, the stakeholder expectations are growing along with challenges associated with highly complex mine permitting processes and changing demographics of mining jurisdictions. The dynamic metals market adds to these challenges impacting the long term development and sustainability of mining projects.These challenges are compelling mining companies to look at various innovations with an integrated approach focusing on meeting the needs of various stakeholders. Mining companies are slowly tapping into some successful concepts that have transformed other industries such as manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceuticals along with oil and gas.This paper provides an overview of various innovations and technology developments in mineral processing that have shaped the current mining industry. A glimpse of the present and future challenges in mining is also presented. An integrated approach to problem solving involving various stakeholders is gaining momentum and this has been reflected in this paper. Various developments that are being pursed in mineral processing focusing on a change in the existing mining paradigm are also presented in this paper.INTRODUCTIONAs mining is evolving, so are the challenges associated with mining. "This paper discusses past and current energy use patterns in the mining and manufacturing sectors of the industrial minerals industry. Information is presented on the primary energy input types as purchased by the industry, the quality and form of the energy actually required by the various production processes, and the residual form of this energy, either embodied in the product or rejected in gaseous and liquid waste heat streams. With the continuing concerns about the availability of energy combined with the rapidly increasing cost of energy as a production input, the reduction of energy usage through improved efficiency will undoubtedly be an increasing priority for the industry during the 1980s. Reduced energy consumption through investment to improve energy efficiency appears to be advantageous from both the corporate and national perspectives.IntroductionEnergy, like labour and materials, is one of the basic production input s to the various mining, processing and manufacturing production stages in the industrial minerals industry. Energy costs, as a percentage of total production costs, have been well above the average for industry in Canada, accounting for more than 50 cents out of every dollar in the most extreme cases. Consequently, energy has always been a relatively important management concern in the industrial minerals industry.The energy supply and price situation in Canada and internationally has been changing rapidly since 1973, following a long period characterized by declining real energy prices and an abundance and wide choice of energy supplies. It is generally accepted that energy prices will continue to increase rapidly, and that there will be uncertainties about the long-term continuity of supply of some energy types. In essence, a period of relative stability has been replaced by a period of relative uncertainty. In such a changing situation, a reassessment of the role of energy as a production input is appropriate.The following sections outline some of the effects of the changing energy scene on the industrial minerals industry. These effects are dealt with primarily in terms of energy costs, because, in most circumstances, a change in the cost of energy as a production input is the end result of both energy price and energy supply changes."

Bechtel, a global engineering, construction and project management company, is not immune to either the opportunities or the challenges created by globalization. However, and not withstanding the challenges, for aluminium industry ""players"" with a true global perspective, globalization presents very real opportunities that may be leveraged to deliver value creating goods and services. The following paper will focus on the exploitation of one of the opportunities created by globalization in the Knowledge Management domain - the application of high level tools and methodologies to improve global delivery of greenfield and brownfield aluminium smelter construction projects. Specific examples will be presented of value driven solutions that were delivered at the early stages of project engineering."

It is the object of this paper to discuss various options for improving the hematite process in terms of increased throughput hence lower capital cost and production of saleable quality hematite. With reference to increasing the throughput of the process, it has now been determined via the analysis of Akita Zinc Co's continuous industrial autoclave performance data that the process kinetics is limited by the rate of the hydrolytic precipitation reaction. By correlating the hydrolytic precipitation rate to supersaturation ratio, it is shown that accelerated kinetics can be achieved via the following measures: (1) in-situ neutralization with addition of zinc calcine; (2) elevation of temperature; and (3) dilution of feed; of which, the first one was retained for further evaluation. According to presented estimates, addition of calcine, amounting to only 2.6% of the total zinc calcine processed, can allow for shortening the retention time by at least 50%. Such drastic shortening of retention time may be either used to increase the throughput of a given autoclave circuit or alternatively to release autoclave capacity for clean hematite production. Hydrothermal treatment of the crude hematite product proved effective in producing clean hematite as according to laboratory tests, hence allowing the sulphur content of hematite to be reduced from around 4% to less than 1%. A conceptual flowsheet incorporating in-situ neutralization for accelerated kinetics with hydrothermal upgrading of crude hematite without sacrificing production capacity and with minimum upset of the plant's water balance is described.

We use the results of new bedrock mapping, combined with geochemical point data and airborne radiometric data (in particular equivalent uranium concentrations) to help determine which geological units in the Paleoproterozoic Great Bear magmatic zone (GBmz) contain elevated uranium. The data collectively indicate that the highest primary uranium concentrations are in equigranular granites and subvolcanic/volcanic porphyries. Notably, these rocks host the majority of known uranium-bearing deposits and/or prospects in the GBmz. We speculate that the uranium in these deposits/prospects was derived from nearby, uranium-enriched rocks and was mobilized by much younger, circulating hydrothermal fluids. Sedimentary rocks of the Thelon and Dismal Lakes groups unconformably overlie the GBmz and are known to host unconformity-type and sandstone-hosted uranium prospects. Most likely, the uraniumenriched rocks of the GBmz acted as a uranium donor to these overlying sedimentary basins. The method of investigation employed in this study may be applicable to other ‘granitic’ terrains in order to identify regions with favourable rocks for uranium exploration.

The Bafq - Saghand ore belt (metallogenic zone) is the main region, where the major discovered Uranium resources are located. This belt is a unique Upper Precambrian terrane experienced Katanga ? Pan African tectono ? thermal events. The oldest sialic crust was formed during the middle Proterozoic and followed by K-granite intrusions of Lufilian Cycle (850-800 M.Y.).This event caused Tectono ? Magmatic ? Activization (T.M.A) characterized by intracontinental rifting and associated ore formations. This zone was considered as an iron ore belt in 1960s ? 1970s, and U ? Th ? REE belt in 1980s ? 1990s, but by new discovered of U ? Mo (Co, Au, As, Cu) mineralization is assigned as a U - Polymetal zone, hosting the full sequences of iron oxide (Cu, Au, U) ore forming groups. On the basis of detailed investigations this zone is characterized by the following peculiarities: This zone is the vestigial vessel of Gondwana basement, where the oldest granite and the first platform clastic cover is exposed. This zone is marginal part of Precambrian continental crust, consolidated in 1.3-1.0 B.a. The sub mature continental crust experienced Lufilian Orogenic and Katanga ? Pan African Tectono ? Thermal event by intercontinental rifting, and ore mineralizations. The ore forming stages were sequential processes, started by enriched mantle derived metallogeny, and ended by interaction of silanes/ HACONS (derived from outer core) with crust. The magnetite- apatite (REE, Ti) metallogeny developed from alkaline- ultrabasic magmatic differentiation, capable to from Au- Ni- Sulfide intrusive massifs during 850- 800 Ma. Degassing of silanes/HACONS from deeper level, not only caused mantle enrichment, and plume upwelling as a frontal load, but also played the main role to develop regional Si (-Na-K-Mg-Ca-Co3) metasomatism, and formation of U- Th- Ti- REE- (apatite, magnetite) deposits. The latest (583-510 Ma old) felsic magmatism was major IGU from U-Mo (-Co-As-Au-?Cu?) hydrothermal vein- type deposits. The albitite- type U- Ti- REE (Th) mineralization could be formed by interaction of ascending, and descending solutions along the deep- rooted structural conduits.

"The objective of this research is to evaluate the magnitude of carbon prices required to drive process development and innovation for the global nickel industry in a direction that tackles the multifaceted sustainability challenges that the industry faces, including air pollution reduction and greenhouse gas abatement. The results suggest that the currently considered carbon prices are not sufficient to drive innovations in processing methods or upstream pollution prevention. The co-benefits of climate change mitigation and pollution prevention cannot be readily realized under climate change policy alone. Increased coordination between climate change policy and performance-based environmental legislation is necessary. INTRODUCTIONNickel is an important metal in our modern society as it is used in stainless steel, alloys, electroplating and rechargeable batteries, all of which are integral to our economic growth and development (Eckelman, 2010).However, nickel production is energy intensive and therefore susceptible to emerging climate change policies, which may lead to production curtailment and/or increased unit costs of production unless changes in efficiency or energy sources are made (Mudd, 2010). The industry is faced with multi-faceted constraints: future technology must not only deal with metallurgical, financial and environmental constraints but also promote low energy and low carbon practices. This presents a challenge for this industry where technology innovation, development and commercialization are often lengthy, risky and costly processes (Imrie, 2006).Climate change is one of the many challenges faced by our society. Others include other pollution to air, water and land, resources shortage and economic development. From a policy perspective, it is important to balance multiple and often competing needs in an integrated manner. It would require some levels of trade-off in order to maximize the overall effectiveness but also to ensure that one policy does not undermine other policy objectives.The aims of this study are to evaluate how developments in climate change policy would affect the nickel industry in the context of existing environmental regulations and how the industry could respond under these constraints."

Introduction By far the largest part of the money raised for mining is raised by honest and legitimate means; but a not inconsiderable amount is raised by fraudulent sales methods. It will be conceded without argument that the greatest menace to the mining business is the fraudulent promoter. The sale of worthless mining stocks to the public by high-pressure. salesmen, house to house canvassers, telephone campaigns, fraudulent use of the mails, fraudulent statements, and reloading, has seriously prejudiced the public against even legitimate mining. A very small percentage of the funds raised by such fraudulent means is ever spent on the property, but instead is absorbed by the promoter in illegitimate' profits, enormous commissions, high office rents, and other expenditures, and is just so much subtracted from the fund which the legitimate developer needs to bring new mines to the point of production. The mining fraternity has been at fault in that, while they recognized this situation, they made no adequate attempt to rectify it. They knew that these fraudulent practises were conducted by parasites who attached themselves to the mining business in boom times and claimed to be part and parcel of it, but who were merely professional salesmen and promoters who, when there was not a mining boom, were selling sky-line real-estate, worthless oil stocks, or fraudulent securities which happened to be popular with the public. While mining people had this distinction well in mind, the public did not differentiate between the crooked promoter temporarily selling fraudulent mining stock and the honest promoter who made mining finance his life work; and we did little to make this distinction clear to the public or to sweep these money grabbers out of our house. The historic boom of 1927-8 and '29 brought with it the usual crop of crooked mining promoters, and the scandals resulting from their operations forced the Governments into the enactment of laws to attempt to protect the gullible public against the operations of these meanest of thieves and to appease public clamour.

Ces cadres s?appliquent à l?un ou l?autre des trois grandes étapes du projet, soit lors de l?étude d?avant projet, pendant l?exploitation ou à la cessation des activités d?exploitation. Comme la réglementation environnementale est de plus en plus nombreuse, ces dernières années, cette présentation vise à exposer les principaux cadres provinciaux et fédéraux actuellement en application au Québec pour le secteur minier et à en dégager les particularités. ABSTRACT The environmental aspects of mining activities carried out across Quebec fall within the scope of various legal, prescribed or other frameworks (directives, policies, guides) at provincial and federal levels. These frameworks apply to one or another of the three major steps of a project: preliminary design, mining and closure. As the number of environmental regulations has greatly increased during the past few years, the object of this presentation is to state the main provincial and federal frameworks currently applicable in Quebec for the mining sector and to identify their special features.

Industrial injury occurrences are an ongoing concern for Mine Operators. Along with the personal suffering of injured workers comes an increase in compensation and productivity costs. Growing recognition of repetitive stress and bodily injuries, accompanied by recent studies, validates the assumption that a relationship exists between ergonomic injuries and machine design. Intuitively, there is a belief that an ergonomically designed machine will reduce repetitive stress injuries through design and education however; quantifying this belief has been a challenge for Mine Operators. Sandvik Tamrock has undertaken a project aimed at developing a business model to assist in quantifying the benefits of ergonomic intervention. This model focuses on distinguishing and quantifying this method of intervention to allow for a better evaluation of the machine. For simplicity, the project initially focused on the Face Drill Jumbos. The target of the project was three fold: !" Recognition of the cost drivers for compensation; ergonomic injuries !" Identification of the relationship between ergonomic machine design, and the decrease of the negative effects associated with the cost drivers !" Systematic prioritization for ?prevention by design? The project findings substantiate the expected reduction in injuries and compensation claims. Based on all ergonomic intervention studies conducted, each case showed a reduction in compensation cost; through prevention by design, one can reduce the amount of potential risk. The paper addresses the resources and methodology used, along with the findings and its relevance to the issues that face the Mining industry.

This paper is an attempt to place Canadian Precambrian volcanogenic deposits in perspective, by examining and compiling data regarding certain neglected fundamentals of size, grade, value, frequency distribution and spatial density. The discovery roles played by various exploration methods are compared and contrasted, and. using empirical methods, the probabilities of discovery are discussed, combined with the use of an effective 'cost-per-target' program. From these basic observations, realistic exploration judgments may be made. Using similar methodology, this format may be applied to other types of deposits. Precambrian volcanogenic deposits occur in a natural geometric progression in size. They number 110, of which 70% are pre-producers, producers or past-producers. These deposits are bonanzas and generally have a 'net pre-smelter' value of between $43 and $62 per ton. The statistically typical deposit is that which occupies the modal position, has 400,000 tons of ore, a value of $20 million and occurs with a frequency of 40%. A median deposit has 1.4 million tons of ore, a value of $70 million and occurs with a frequency of 15%. An upper-decile deposit ha s 13.3 million tons of ore. a value of $750 million and occurs with a frequency of 6.5%. The major, mid-upper-decile deposits have a minimum of 50 million tons of ore, a value of $3 billion and occur with a frequency of 4%. Five major volcanogenic deposits occur in the Precambrian and account for 54% of production. This contrasts with 55 deposits (all below the median) which account for 3.9% of production.

"Canada developed pioneering rare earth solvent extraction methods to recover the rare earths and thorium as by-products of uranium recovery operations in Elliot Lake, Ontario, and was a major supplier of these key elements from about 1960 until 1990. At one stage, Elliot Lake was supplying perhaps one third of the world’s yttrium as well as much of its thorium. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s early rare earth and thorium production facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray picture tube used in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths.The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths.Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available but unquestionably Elliot Lake made a significant contribution to world thorium and the rare earth production. This paper, presented earlier in an abbreviated form (Goode, 2012), is intended to present as much of the information that is available."

"In this paper a review of the current status in recycling technologies for cathode ray tubes is given for both the glass and phosphors. Particular emphasis is placed on the opportunities for the recovery of the rare earth elements (REE) from the phosphor coatings. This is placed in the market context of alternative virgin sources and some of the advantages and disadvantages for REE waste recovery. Future opportunities are explored and also some experimental detail on a low cost leach system is presented. INTRODUCTIONThe disposal of cathode ray tube (CRT) based colour televisions has accelerated world-wide with the development of high definition flat screen panels. The total number of colour CRT televisions that have been sold in the United States in the mid-20th century is estimated to have been over 2 billion (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2007), with high current rates of disposal. It is estimated that of the 20 million televisions annually discarded, 78% are send to landfill (Nnorom, Osibanjo & Ogwuegbu, 2011). However, this easily accessible item of electronics cannot only be turned into a valuable resource using the right recovery procedures, it can also prevent the substantial environmental contamination arising from improper disposal. In this review we focus on previous and current work performed on the recycling of CRT based televisions. Due to the increasing demand for rare earth metals, the main focus will be on the possibilities and challenges of recycling the fluorescent phosphor powders on the CRT’s panel glass.CATHODE RAY TUBE’S GLASS RECYCLINGConventional cathode ray tubes consist of three main parts, the panel, the funnel and the neck (Figure 1). To produce the different colours on the screen, the inside of the panel is coated with a matrix of hundreds of thousands of small phosphor dots. Each dot is one of three types of coloured phosphors, emitting either red, green or blue light. These emit light when excited by a beam of electrons generated by electron guns located in the neck of the CRT. These beams pass through holes in the shadow mask and excite the phosphor coating on the inside of the panel, to give light of variable RGB composition, see Figure 1."

THE THEME of my remarks provides a great deal of latitude. I shall therefore take advantage of the scope it offers to look at our industry across a broad spectrum. My observations reflect a Canadian mining man's varied career as a geologist, mine operator, geological consult ant and company executive in Canada and overseas ... under differing cultures, business environments and political jurisdictions. I was fortunate to come into this industry in the mid-1930's when it was characterized by great enthusiasm, drive and resourcefulness. It was the beginning of a burgeoning era of some 30 years' duration in which the individualist, the entrepreneur and the builder found ample room for expression. As I contemplate the environment in which we now have to operate and try to perceive what lies ahead, I find myself deeply disturbed. Something serious has happened to this industry along the way. It appears that our very success has been the source of our undoing. I believe it is useful to summarize our industry's basic strength at home as a take-off point f or assessing its position in world terms. I hope that I can focus on some of the things that, in my view, must be done for this industry and by this industry to restore Canada's historic role in the world mining community. The Canadian mineral industry provides 140,000 jobs. It pays the second -highest average weekly wages and salaries among the country's major industries. The output per employee in the mining industry is estimated at about three times that for the economy as a whole.

In addition, deal with an issue that a clear revenue-sharing system between business principals of Web-based BIM library market is not available at the current stage was presented as a factor of inhibiting activation of BIM library market. So in order to offer a reasonable revenue-sharing strategy in BIM library market as conceptual level, a methodology and process of applying Game theory being used for deriving. The prominence of her mineral resources makes Canada a most fitting place in which to hold the Second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress, since in all probability the Dominion has more diversified mineral wealth than any other part of the British Empire. This paper is concerned with nickel, an important factor of Canada's mineral production. The richness and quantity of her nickel ores have made Canada the world's most important source of supply of the metal. Its history and diversified uses are, therefore, particularly interesting at this meeting. Early History Probably the first use of nickel by man was in the fashioning of implements, and later swords, from nickel-bearing meteorites, masses of metal that have fallen from time to time at many points on the earth's surface and which consist normally of iron carrying substantial amounts of nickel. Meteorites were perhaps the first metal known to man. The falling star, sought out with fear overborne by curiosity, was found to be a better stone than the earth-given, truly a boon from the gods. Archaeologists tell us there is good evidence that the ancient oriental peoples learned at an early date to make these stones into useful implements. The invincible blades of the great warriors of old, in China, Persia, and in northern Europe, were Heaven-sent, a fable which sounds significant of meteoric iron. Probably some of the ancient swords of Khorassan and of Damascus were of meteoric nickel-bearing iron.

This paper presents the main features of coal mining in Japan, as determined by the author while attending the International Coal Conference in October of 1963. The general economy of the country is considered, and the requirements for coking coal are outlined. Statistics and comments on production and consumption are then given, with accompanying cost figures, and the characteristics of Japanese coal mining are compared with those of Canada. Mining methods and underground transportation are covered, with emphasis on undersea mining. Finally, a description is given of a visit to the Miike colliery, the largest in Japan. I T was my privilege to attend the International Coal Conference held in Tokyo in October, 1963, to meet many prominent members of the Japan Coal Association and to visit one of the major coal fields. "The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. Aux stades antérieurs du développement minéral, lorsque les connaissances quantitatives ne s'étendent qu’à l'axe géologique, le terme ""gisement délimite"" sera utilisé. Le terme ""réserve"" ne sera utilisé que dans une mine en exploitation au dans un projet minier, lorsque l'information dans les axes de la géologie, de l'ingénierie et de l'économique sera appropriée pour en garantir la faisabilité technique et économique. Chaque catégories des réserves, prouvée et probable sera subdivisée en deux classes pour mieux qualifier les niveaux d'évaluation du projet. La catégorie actuelle des réserves possibles sera remplacée par celle des ""minéralisations inférées"". Plusieurs essais démontrent que le système propose, qui s'inspire du Code australasien, peut facilement et rapidement s'intégrer dans les pratiques de l'industrie. II pourrait également contribuer à une standardisation des méthodes et des nomenclatures à l'échelle internationale. La proposition d'utiliser les marges d'erreur des estimes au niveau de confiance de90%pour caractériser les estimations se situe dans une plus longue perspective. Cette application demandera des développement méthodologiques additionnels ainsi qu'une période de rodage."

"The LaRonde mill was commissioned in 1988 and began treating ore from the Penna shaft in 2000. The mill has been expanded to accommodate 7,500 t/day, but ramped down to 6,000 t/day since the deep extension began. The process recovers gold, silver, and base metals. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking gold-pyrite concentrate to a treatment plant feeding pulp to the LaRonde mill, increasing gold output by 40,000 oz. In 2009, the high-grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the LaRonde plant, increasing gold output by 120,000 oz. This paper outlines the metallurgical considerations related to the treatment of different ore types.RÉSUMÉ Le concentrateur de la mine LaRonde a été mis en service en 1988 et a commencé à traiter le minerai du puits Penna en 2000. La capacité du concentrateur a augmenté afin de permettre le traitement de 7 500 tonnes de minerai par jour, capacité qui est retombée à 6 000 tonnes par jour (tpj) depuis le début de l’extension en profondeur de la mine. Ce procédé permet de récupérer de l’or, de l’argent et des métaux communs. En 2008, l’usine de traitement Goldex a commencé à transporter par camion du concentré de pyrite et d’or vers une usine de traitement alimentant en pulpe le concentrateur de LaRonde, augmentant ainsi la production d’or de 40 000 onces. En 2009, les installations de traitement du minerai à haute teneur de Lapa ont été annexées à l’usine de traitement de LaRonde, augmentant la production d’or de 120 000 onces. Cet article passe en revue les considérations métallurgiques liées au traitement de différents types de minerai.INTRODUCTIONThe LaRonde metallurgical plant in the Abitibi region of Quebec, Canada, evolved into a mature milling site following expansions in 2000–2003, thanks to improved processes, manpower, and water treatment capabilities that better accommodate the complex constituents of the LaRonde ore. The ore requires a sequence of grinding, copper- lead and zinc flotation, and precious metals leaching, ending with a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery. A portion (35%) of the tailings is sent back underground as paste backfill after being treated with the SO2-air cyanide destruction process. The tailings area has a dedicated cyanide destruction and metal precipitation area through which the used water passes before returning as recycled water. A biological water treatment plant was built in 2004 to address water toxicity in the final effluent. The water toxicity was the result of the high sulfide content of the LaRonde ore (from thiocyanate or stable cyanide species buildup) and the use of 90% recirculated water in the mill. The water treatment plant uses bacteria to transform thiocyanate into nitrates and precipitate phosphorus from the water before it is discharged into the environment."

"The rising cost of extracting metals from existing traditional deposits, increasingly stringent environmental regulations and a greater awareness of corporate social responsibility issues are all factors in stimulating the examination of mine tailings and small-scale alluvial deposits as a potential source of new raw materials. Furthermore, despite tougher economic times the demand for commodities remains strong, in no small part as a result of the growth of the world’s emerging economies.This combination of social and economic factors looks set to continue in the long term which will encourage greater recovery of materials from previously ignored sources such as mine tailings and ores from alluvial deposits.An expansion in the recovery of useful materials from mining-related activities is likely to require the use of robust and innovative techniques that have a built-in degree of future-proofing; DC plasma technology is one such technology.As a result of its ability to separate the valuable metal and minerals from the waste material while destroying hazardous compounds, Tetronics’ DC arc technology offers an alternative approach to resource recovery from a wide range of mine ores. Harmful cyanide compounds and the vast quantities of water used in conventional hydrometallurgical processing are avoided when plasma processing is adopted. DC arc technology also brings additional benefits, including: the extremely effective destruction of organic materials, the conversion of the inorganic material into a re-useable aggregate and the high tolerance of the process to fine and dusty materials.
