The object of this paper is not to describe any particular type of engine in close technical detail but rather to give a general picture of past and present practice in this important section of the industry. The subject involves the study of almost 600 years of coal mining history which has fluctuated from stagnation to extremely rapid progress.Up to the year 1300, coal was obtained from outcrops and exposed beds, but this easily worked source soon gave out, so by that time shafts had to be sunk to the coal seams, and coal mining proper commenced its career.These early shafts were very shallow, and winding equipment was not a matter for much concern. Raising coal was generally achieved by human labour, which was called "coal bearing." Coal was loaded into baskets. strapped to a man's back, and carried from the underground workings to the pit bottom. The unfortunate individual then climbed ladders to the top of the shaft, unloaded the basket, and descended the shaft for the next load. Men, women and even children, were employed as the mine expanded, and were generally bound to the colliery for life, performing daily work which would now be regarded as slavery. This primitive method of raising coal to the surface was slow, inefficient and highly dangerous, yet for want of a better method it continued until in 1602 it isrecorded as having been abolished in Wales, one of England's great coal districts. It was not until 100 years later, however, that it was abolished in the northern coalfields, and the colliers were freed forever from their dreadful life.WINDLASSThe first step towards winding coal was the introduction of the windlass. It is a commonplace of our industry that prices of most minerals have been historically weak during the 1980s. The International Monetary Fund's index of prices of metals fell 25 per cent between 1980 and 1982, rose slightly in 1983, and has since fallen further. In December last year it was 37 per cent below its 1980 average. The few temporary exceptions to the mineral industry's malaise highlight the excess capacity, which largely explains the weakness of prices. The industry has painfully come to recognise that more satisfactory prices will not be restored until supply capability and demand move back into better balance. Mine capacity was installed in the expectation of much faster growth of demand than has occurred. For a variety of reasons mine and plant closures have been insufficient to restore equilibrium to the market-place. The industry may, therefore, have to resign itself to continued weak prices for some years more, at least by the yardstick of the 1970s. Growth rates of demand have slackened off in line with economic activity, and in response to continuing substitution and technological improvements. To the extent that the recent weakness of oil prices stimulates the industrial countries' activity, demand for non-fuel minerals may grow faster than most forecasters now predict. It is, however, much too early to say how long the weaker oil prices will persist, and even more difficult to estimate their probable effects. In typical post-war business cycles the usual response to recession was to batten down the hatches, and ride out the storm. Sooner or later, and probably sooner, demand resumed its previous trend path, and prices recovered. The market, in effect, bailed mines out of trouble; the more efficient could make attractive pre-tax profits whilst even the poor to mediocre could earn a satisfactory living. Prices rose at least as fast as general inflation, and in the early 1970s much faster. In retrospect those price rises of the early 1970s were historically abnormal but they did not appear so in the prevailing inflationary climate of the time. When the market failed in the early 1980s many of the hardest hit companies looked for scapegoats.

Over the past 18 months the De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd operations have made a concerted effort to move away from using the traditional shock tube initiating systems. These systems are being systematically replaced by the use of electronic delay detonators (EDD). Various trials were conducted in both host rock and kimberlite rock masses to improve tunnel advance as well as to optimise delay timing during trough openings (Ngoma et al, 1999; Mohle, 1999; Baltus, 2000). The high cost of EDDÆs, when compared with traditional initiation systems, led to a number of detailed studies being conducted on the mines where EDDÆs were being used. These studies aimed to quantify the additional benefits when blasting with electronic detonators. The studies showed that the change was justified on the basis of increased quality control and reliability gained through the use of EDDÆs. However, these benefits attract other related benefits, like fragmentation control, and backbreak reductions. When compared to the shock tube initiating systems the increased development face advance and the reduction of oversize during production blasting using EDDs, compared favourably to the less costly systems. As blasting engineers gained experience and confidence in the use of the system bigger blasts were initiated in mass under-cut blasts and slot raise development, by using multiple hole firing and second delay periods between holes. In the open pit and sublevel open stope mining methods the control of the fragmentation distribution and the effect of the mass of explosive detonated during a blast is detrimental to the loading and hauling production rates and the stability of the rock mass behind the blast. With a stable rock mass the bench cutting can be executed to establish steeper overall slope angles leading to large cost savings due to a reduction in waste stripping. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate through quantification that the use of the EDDs as an initiating system improves all-round blasting performances and assists in meeting customer requirements. Coal winning in the Latrobe Valley exceeds 45 mtpa uses a small number of Bucket Wheel Excavators and high speed conveyor systems. While this equipment offers many advantages in the production cycle, incorrect use can lead to low productivity and risks to the safety of the operators and equipment. The mining equipment is of high capital value and easily damaged when used outside the correct operating range. In the extreme case, this can result in total machine collapse, having major implications for personnel safety as well as production and costs. With an active productivity improvement program in the Latrobe Valley in the last two years resulting in a 50 per cent reduction of personnel, many experienced operators have retired. Mine management are facing the urgent need to rapidly train new operators to maintain high productivity levels and reduce the risk of accidents to personnel and high capital cost plant. With the assistance of the Central Gippsland College of TAFE a Certificate Level course has been developed for open cut operators. The course covers all essential training needs for the Latrobe Valley mines. The training is developed from National Competency Standards, allowing transfer of skills, and is flexible to suit other enterprises. It has been written for self-paced learning with the total job understanding, and to have competency-based learning outcomes, training tasks and assessments built-in to modules. With the introduction of this new training program, management is convinced that the element of risk within the mine will be significantly reduced. For these reasons it is an ideal training model for other enterprises.

In recent years, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of mechanically stirred flotation cells has been used to study the complexity of the flow within the cells. In CFD modelling, the flotation cell is discretised into individual finite volumes where local values of flow properties are calculated. The flotation effect is studied as three subprocesses including collision, attachment and detachment. In the present work, these subprocesses are modelled in a laboratory flotation cell. The flotation kinetics involving a population balance for particles in a semi-batch process has been developed. From turbulent collision models, the local rates of bubble-particle encounters have been estimated from the local turbulent velocities. The probabilities of collision, adhesion and stabilisation have been calculated at each location in the flotation cell. The net rate of attachment, after accounting for detachments, has been used in the kinetic model involving transient CFD simulations with removal of bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer. Comparison of the predicted fraction of particles remaining in the cell and the fraction of free particles to the total number of particles remaining in the cell indicates that the particle recovery rate to the pulp-froth interface is much slower than the net attachment rates. For the case studied, the results indicate that the bubbles are loaded with particles quite quickly, and that the bubble surface area flux is the limiting factor in the recovery rate at the froth interface. This explains why the relationship between flotation rate and bubble surface area flux is generally used as a criterion for designing flotation cells. The predicted flotation rate constants also indicate that fine and large particles do not float as well as intermediate sized particles of 120 - 240 ¦m range. This is consistent with the flotation recovery generally observed in flotation practice. The magnitude of the flotation rate constants obtained by CFD modelling indicates that transport rates of the bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer contribute quite significantly to the overall flotation rate and this is likely to be the case especially in plant-scale equipment.

Major occurrences of platinum group minerals (PGM) are in crustally-contaminated, huge, layered igneous complexes (Bushveld and Stillwater) and gabbroic intrusions (Norilsk); relatively minor occurrences include arc-related æzoned Alaskan ultramaficsÆ. In terms of arc-related provenances, the recognition of alluvial PGM in river and beach deposits of southern South Island (Mitchell, 1995), in situ in the Longwoods (Cowden et al, 1990), and the ultramafic-mafic layered Greenhills Complex at Bluff (Spandler et al, 2000) raise the possibility that some economically-significant PGM deposits may exist in New Zealand. The Longwoods and Greenhills are in the Brook Street Terrane which is a remnant of a primitive intra-oceanic arc system of Late Permian-Early Triassic age. The Terrane comprises volcanogenic sequences containing plagioclase- and clinopyroxenephyric basalts, high-MgO ankaramite and dolerite dikes, trondhjemite plutons, and basaltic to andesitic volcaniclastic and sedimentary rocks. The cumulate complexes contain early-formed olivine- and clinopyroxene-rich ultramafic cumulates overlain by anorthite and hornblende-bearing gabbros. Primary (isoferroplatinum) and secondary (sperrylite) platinum group minerals are preserved in chrome-rich spinel pods in basal dunite of the Greenhills Complex. Saturation during early fractionation of primitive high-MgO magmas rather than magma mixing seems likely for the primary PGM. Together with correlative terranes in Queensland and New Caledonia, the Brooks Street Terrane is an exposed cross-section of an extensive Permo-Triassic island-arc system. Most parental magmas were primitive island-arc tholeiites, but other primary magma-types include high-MgO ankaramites and trondhjemites û the latter formed by partial melting of lower crustal clinopyroxene-rich cumulates and gabbros, respectively. The parental ankaramites fractionated to form mafic-ultramafic cumulates and primitive to evolved melts of high-Al basalt to andesite compositions (Takitimus). The Brook Street Terrane is an analogue for modern intra-oceanic islandarc systems and allows detailed study of subvolcanic arc processes.

With a view to characterising activated carbons with respect to their ability to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions, an attempt was made to establish correlations between the equilibrium capacity constant of the activated carbon for gold (k value) and five other parameters. These parameters were percentage ash content, iodine number, methylene blue value, surface area, and pH respectively. Twenty four different proprietary brand activated carbon products were examined, the correlations being established by means of linear regression analysis. It was shown that a significant correlation only existed between k and pH value. This was interpreted in terms of the presence of oxide complexes on the activated carbon surface. Further test specifications as developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories are also outlined with a view to the selection of activated carbons suitable for use in' a carbon-in-pulp operation. Methods for assessing both the capacity and the kinetic response of carbons for gold adsorption are presented, while the measurement of attrition resistance, particle size distribution and moisture and solubles content is also outlined. The measurement of the capacity constant for gold adsorption together with attrition resistance are considered to be necessary in the initial selection of a suitable carbon.

Permian ultramafic and associated rocks form a belt in East Nelson and contain widespread, but minor, chromite and copper mineralisation and some mining was carried out last century. Since mining ceased, about 1910, little mapping of the belt has been carried out although its origin has been debated vigorously. Recently it has been inferred to form part of a ophiolite sequence, which has been tectonically disrupted to form a melange, and several 'plate -tectonic' models have been proposed. Mapping in the central part of the belt has shown that mTlanges are to the east of the ophiolite sequence. Faulting is widespread so that in anyone section part of the sequence may be absent. Some of the faulting is difficult to recognise and probably took place during or soon after the sequence accumulated. Other faulting is clearly of Cenozoic age and includes major NNE striking faults, with large horizontal displacement, and approximately east-west striking faults with almost entirely vertical movement. The writer agrees that 'plate tectonics' could provide an acceptable explanation for the origin of the ophiolite sequence but the models so far proposed do not take into account the nature and field relationships of the rock units present. Copper Mineralisation is largely controlled by the younger faults, particularly those striking about north-east, and is largely confined to the western part of the ultramafic rocks particularly where slivers of the volcanics of the adjacent Lee River Group are enclosed. Mineralisation, along NNE striking shear zones, has recently been found in the volcanics some distance from the ultramafic rocks. The chromite mineralization is in the form of primary layering in the basal part of the ultramafic belt although in places it has been concentrated into lenses probably during serpentinisation.

The nickel exploration boom of the late-1960s and early-1970s led to the discovery of numerous komatiite-hosted nickel sulphide deposits, associated with variably serpentinised bodies of olivine-rich cumulates. Subsequent research has shown the importance of volcanological processes to understanding the genesis of these deposits. Crucial developments have come through consideration of the fluid dynamics of magmas and magma-crystal mixtures, through observation of the dynamics and geometry of modern day basaltic lava flows, through application of theory and experimentation on the kinetics of crystal growth from magmas, and most importantly from extensive detailed field mapping of komatiitic sequences in the Yilgarn Block and elsewhere. From these studies has emerged a new integrated view of the volcanological setting of komatiite-hosted deposits, and a recognition that a complete continuum of deposit types exists. Nevertheless, komatiite associated magmatic nickel deposits generally fall into two overall types based on the nature of the sulphide ore. In the first type the bulk of the ore is either massive Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide or a variable mixture of massive sulphide and an ore characterised by olivine crystals in a continuous matrix of sulphide occupying between 30 and 75 per cent by volume of the rock (called Matrix Ore). Nickel grades of massive sulphide ore range from 2 - 20 wt% and those of the matrix ore generally fall in the range 1 - 5 wt% (average 2.5 wt%) Ni/Cu ratios of the sulphide fraction are generally >10.

The satisfactory ventilation of an extensive coal mine is a subject which requires continual attention from all concerned.It must be remembered that a colliery contains many miles of workings, extending in all directions and throughout which noxious gases may be given off either naturally or by oxidation of the coal; fumes from explosives will be produced, dust will be gathered and carried in suspension, and water will be evaporated, producing a high humidity. Hence a considerable quantity of air in movement must be available to provide sufficient oxygen for men and horses, as well as to dilute and sweep away impurities, and maintain a tolerable degree of coolness.To maintain these conditions a modern colliery is divided up from the main ventilation shafts or adits (as the case may be) into a system of main airways, and in the working districts is further subdivided into district splits. To initiate the air movement, large centrifugal fans with a displacement capacity of up to 400,000 cu. ft. of air per minute are installed, generally in drifts off the upcast shaft, or adit, and at the return end of the ventilating circuit. These fans are thus exhausting fans and by producing a region of low density bring the heavier air at the other extremity of the circuit into movement to correct the difference in density, so far as it is not prevented by the frictional resistance of the airways. A flow of air is thus established, and it is obvious that to enable this volume of air to be as great as possible, the frictional resistance of the mine airways should be maintained at the lowest practicable figure. To this end, main airways should be as large as possible, have sides as smooth as practicable, and be straight, any necessary bends being of large radius.REQUIREMENTS OF THE VENTILATION SYSTEMThe New South Wales Coal Mines Regulation Act contains stringent provisions on requirements of the ventilation system. Now that Japan has achieved a remarkable high growth and joined the ranks of economic powers, she is required to take a stance proper to her new position toward international co- operation among Western advanced countries, economic/technical aids to Southeast Asian and Pacific LDCs, and others. As a field subject to such international cooperation programs, the development/use of coal resources has been winning increasing attention in recent years. Coal is positioned as one of promising alternative energies. With Southeast Asia plus Japan and the EEC serving as the two nucleus polar regions, total coal demand in the free world is projected to jump 37% in the year 2000 from the present level and steaming coal imports in the world, primarily destined for power generation, almost double the 1983 level. Such being the situations, Japan's tech- nologies related to coal resource development, if successfully introduced into coal-producing countries to help them boost their production, can directly lead to international cooperation that Japan is now required to fulfill. At home, however, the Japanese coal industry has been just on the wane due to various press- ing problems, such as wider differentials between overseas and domestic coal and deeper/ remorter mining. The industry was named atop in a list of the industries requiring restruct- uring at a meeting of the Economic Structure Study Committee held prior to the decision- making of the 8th coal policy, which slashed coal production planned for the last fiscal year of its life to some 10 million tons, a drop of as much as 50% from nominal output planned in the 7th policy. Under such circumstances at home and abroad, a pioneer study has been under way since fiscal 1984 as part of Japan's energy cooperation in the Pacific. The study is based on the Pacific coal flow concept hammered out by the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy of the MITI.

The use of chemical additives to initiate such processes as particulate separation through flotation or dewatering through flocculation, is common in the mining industry. The dosing of additives is none the less poorly controlled from a process control viewpoint and it is perhaps fortuitous that over-dosing or misuse of chemicals is rarely catastrophic to the production cycle. In many cases, such events would go undetected if it were not for economic considerations. Recently, the advent of orebodies with finer mineral disseminations and the push for greater efficiencies in both production and tailing disposal have resulted in the need for greater control of the dosing and utilisation of chemical additives. The need to grind at higher pulp densities and to finer sizes and to dewater to higher solid contents are but two examples that require a more stringent understanding of the true role of additives in controlling the rheology of suspensions and the influence of additives on the surface chemistry of particles. The inter-relationship between the surface chemistry of particles and the role of additives in controlling suspension rheology is now well understood for systems in which the average particle shape in the mixture is spherical or close to spherical. Luckily, this is the case for a large number of systems in the mining industry and the true role of typical additives in these systems will be explored. Difficulties arise for suspensions containing clays or other platey or needle shaped minerals and in many cases, quite small quantities of platey minerals dominate the rheology of suspensions. The role of additives in controlling the rheology of asymmetric particle systems is more complex but the effect of the additive in changing particle alignment in solution is the key to understanding suspension behaviour. The manipulation of the rheology of asymmetric particle systems will also be explored.

Assessment of metal mobility, acid rock drainage production, and toxic effects from weathering of mineralised materials (ie mine-waste piles and outcropping alteration/ore zones) is key in evaluating and mitigating metal mining sites. Many metal- and acid-generating materials at these sites are sulfur minerals (sulfides to sulfates) with differing reactivities, weathering characteristics and metal contents. Our working hypothesis predicts that data on the types and quantities of sulfur minerals, coupled with comparison of their sulfur isotopic compositions to that of aqueous sulfate in the surrounding environment, can be used to evaluate primary pathways of weathering reactions at mining sites. We developed a sequential extraction scheme to separate the phases of sulfur in mineralised materials. Operationally defined phases, including monosulfides, disulfides, elemental sulfur, water-soluble sulfo-salts, acid-soluble sulfates, and resistant sulfate phases such as barite, are quantified gravimetrically and/or instrumentally. Several sets of experiments were designed to test the effectiveness of this extraction scheme. First, a variety of ore sulfides diluted in an inert matrix was analysed with the scheme. Results showed that molybdenite and arsenic-bearing sulfides do not behave as predicted from just their sulfur oxidation states, indicating that samples containing these minerals need special treatment for complete phase recovery. Second, a natural mine-waste composite standard was analysed by the scheme. The sum of the phases was equal to the total sulfur concentration analysed independently. Each phase had a similar, but distinct sulfur isotopic composition. The results were verified with a laboratory prepared æproxyÆ having the same mineralogical composition as the standard, but with each phase having a very different sulfur isotopic composition. The sulfur isotopic compositions of the recovered phases from the æproxyÆ showed that the scheme effectively separated the sulfur with only minor cross contamination of phases. The speciation and isotopic analyses were applied to both mine-waste piles and naturally occurring alteration zones at nine mine sites. A case study from one site comparing the sulfur isotopic composition of minerals in an alteration zone and dissolved sulfate in proximal streams is presented. This case study shows the application of our data to differentiating sources of sulfate in the surrounding environment.

Porphyry-related skarns are common around thePacific Rim. Examples include Cadia and Goonumbla (Australia) Ok Tedi (PNG) and Ertsberg and Grasberg (Indonesia). Although usually treated as separate to the adjacent porphyry copper-gold (Cu-Au) deposit, skarns near porphyry deposits are commonly inextricably part of the larger Cu-Au system(s). Using Cadia as the primary example, we demonstrate that large, zoned, calc-silicate skarns necessitate very large porphyry systems. The Big Cadia and Little Cadia Fe-Cu-Au skarns are associated with the Late Ordovician to Early Silurian high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic Cadia Intrusive Complex (CIC). Together, these skarns total ~40 Mt of Cu-Au ore but are much smaller than the adjacent Cadia EastûFar East, Cadia Hill, and Ridgeway porphyry-related Cu-Au deposits. Historically these skarns were large, economically significant and highly controversial deposits. Porphyry-related skarns typically have well-developed calc-silicate and ore zonation. At Cadia, classic skarn zonation has been mapped between Cadia Quarry (proximal) and Big Cadia (distal). Over this 800 minterval, mineralogy trends from: proximal garnet > pyroxene, grading to; fe-oxide-rich skarn; and distal haematite-epidote-rich skarn. At Little Cadia, analogous but symmetrical alteration zonation is present. Big Cadia formed from fluids that migrated laterally within calcareous units and were sourced from strongly altered quartz monzonite phases of the CIC at Cadia Quarry. Isotope studies and mass-balance calculations suggest that prograde and retrograde skarn alteration was caused by magmatic dominated fluids. They also indicate that the mapped alteration system at Cadia Quarry is insufficient to account for the total volume of Fe present at Big Cadia. Despite the typically oxidised nature of many porphyry systems, not all skarns in the porphyry environment are oxidised. Assimilation of carbonaceous sediment by hydrous, alkaline intrusions could lead to reduced Au skarns rather than porphyry deposits. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The mineral exploration and extraction industries have gained major cost and efficiency benefits from the use of computers. However these industries are now at a cross-roads with two seemingly disparate developments - that of an increasing number of complex geoscience databases and, at the same time, the merging of all known data for the particular regions at minimal cost. These two developments can be managed by the development and of an industry accepted geoscience data model and dictionary. This will provide a common basis of understanding for geoscience data through a common language and a common structure for geoscience information. Integration of specialist systems and databases can then proceed efficiently. The development of a data model is going ahead with consensus from the mining industry. This is a joint government and industry funded project and managed through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association, AMIRA. AMIRA is a well known research broker to the Australian mining industry obtaining sponsorship for projects both from private and government groups. The AMIRA project, P431, called the Geoscience Data Model, is to be the Australian standard data model for geoscience disciplines. The requirement for a standard geoscience data model has been recognised in Australia for some time. In October 1991, the Australian Government Geoscience Database Policy Advisory Committee (GGDPAC) established a Geoscience Data Standards Working Group which drafted a comprehensive list of data categories of the geoscience area. An AMIRA project called AMDEX was established to develop a transfer standard for the mining industry data at about the same time as this committee was in operation. The first AMDEX sponsors meeting was held in May 1991. It was proposed to use the US Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) as the basis to transfer mining data in AMDEX. A limited data model of mining data to be transferred was developed for the AMDEX standard under SDTS. The Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) saw the need to extend this and develop a complete data model for the geosciences and proposed this as a new project to AMIRA. This was strongly supported by GGDPAC which lead to sponsorship of the project from most state geological surveys. The Geoscience Data Model can be broken down into separate data models for a number of geoscience themes and sponsorship obtained so far will enable models to be developed for a comprehensive set of themes selected by the project sponsors. Further sponsorship is required to enable a more complete coverage of the geoscience area to be developed. Sponsorship for the Geoscience Data Model has been strong from the geological surveys and there was some effort by GGDPAC to promote the project in these organisations. An Australian geoscience data model is of immediate use to the geological surveys in assisting the standardising of huge quantities of geoscience data held by government agencies and it is preferable that this be an Australia-wide standard.

As remaining gold deposits tend to become more refractory, some form of oxidative pre-treatment involving hydro or pyrometallurgy is necessary to maintain high metal recoveries. These pre-treatments include pressure oxidation, bio-leaching or roasting. In the past, the primary criterion for selection of oxidative pre-treatment relied mainly on the extent of gold recovery and relative economics. In this study, a different approach has been adopted, ie the quantitative determination of environmental performance of the oxidative pre-treatment processes bio-leaching, roasting and pressure oxidation to assess which had the least impact on the environment. By establishing the environmental performance of processes, waste minimisation can be addressed early in process selection. Using mass balances, the environmental theme method was applied to determine the performance, on the basis of gold treated, of the oxidative pre-treatment processes of selected plants. No clear trend was observed in the overall impacts of each of seven plants, with all but one of the environmental evaluation indices being of the same order of magnitude; this was probably due to masking effects arising from the large variations in feed composition, tonnage, and gold levels. Within each type of pre-oxidation plant however, certain trends were detectable. For instance, irrespective of plant size, ore composition or mineralogy, for the bio-leaching and pressure oxidation units, the general order of environmental impact from greatest to least was sequentially toxicity, acidification potential, depletion of resources, solid waste generation and greenhouse enhancement. For the roasters the acidification potential was the most significant. Determination of the environmental performance of the oxidative pre-treatment of a hypothetical ore in a plant of fixed tonnage was undertaken to remove the possible masking effects of variables associated with feeds of different mineralogy, gold tenor and tonnage. The bio-leaching process gave a marginally better performance than pressure oxidation, the roasting process the worst, although there was not a great difference between them. The decreasing order of contribution to the environmental index was acidification potential, toxicity, resource depletion, solid waste generation and greenhouse enhancement for bio-leaching and pressure oxidation; whereas it was acidification potential, solid waste generation, toxicity, resource depletion and greenhouse enhancement for roasting. Since the major contributor to the environmental index was the acidification potential, the environmental performance of treatment processes for the acidic effluents was calculated. After neutralisation of the net acid resulting from bio-oxidation and pressure oxidation, and the application of various scrubbing and product formation processes for the sulphur dioxide from the roasting process, it was shown that pressure oxidation gave a marginally better performance than bio-leaching, ahead of roasting. This study demonstrated the potential for the development of a predictive tool which could be used in determining the environmental performance, and thus the selection, optimisation, and improvement of pre-oxidation processes for least impact on the environment. These would allow operation of these processes within defined environmental performance limits and decisions regarding the desirability of processing various parts of a heterogeneous orebody to be made on environmental grounds.

Ashton Mining Ltd (Ashton) and Lynas Corporation Ltd (Lynas) have established a joint venture partnership to develop and process rare earth oxides (REOÆs) from the Mt Weld deposit in Western Australia. The deposit is located in a deeply weathered volcanic carbonatite structure that contains approximately two million tonnes of rare earth oxides at an average grade of 20 per cent REO. As part of the 1999/2000 feasibility study currently being undertaken by Ashton and Lynas, an extensive laboratory beneficiation test program was undertaken by CSIRO Minerals on diamond drill core samples from the Mt Weld orebody. The aim was to develop a flowsheet, based primarily on flotation that could be confirmed at pilot plant scale. The target concentrate grade was 52 per cent REO with a REO recovery of at least 35 per cent. Two main ore types, nominated as CZ (limonitic siltstone) and LI (nodular limonitic ironstone) were identified for separate laboratory evaluation. The lower grade LI-type ore overlies the higher grade and more extensive CZ-type ore. The majority of the work was conducted on the CZ ore; only limited testing of the LI ore was undertaken. The latter contains a clay component that will present difficulties in processing due to its poor filtering and settling characteristics. Two processing options for treatment of CZ ore were presented for pilot plant consideration. One (Option 1) includes gravity concentration prior to flotation while the other (Option 2) includes finer grinding and four stages of open circuit cleaning. The benefits of each scheme are discussed in detail. Neither has been fully optimised and the definitive flowsheet is most likely to be a hybrid of the two schemes, incorporating the best features of each. Typical metallurgical results from each scheme were final concentrate grades of 49 per cent REO, 10-16 per cent Fe2O3 and 3.2-4.8 per cent CaO. REO recoveries were above 35 per cent in both cases. Features of the processes developed by CSIRO were the inclusion of a gravity concentration stage prior to flotation, a modified flotation reagent scheme, a change in the method of feed preparation, and incorporation of magnetic separation to upgrade final flotation concentrates. Metallurgical results obtained from flotation tests on LI ore were much poorer than those obtained for CZ ore. The best rougher/scavenger result, with the limited amount of testing so far completed, was an REO grade of 32 per cent with a recovery of 28 per cent. Further work is needed to develop a viable processing route for this ore type.

This study assessed the deformation failure characteristics of rock-coal composites with different height ratios. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted using an acoustic emission monitoring system and XTDIC three-dimensional full-field strain measurement system. The results showed that with the increase in rock-coal height ratios, the uniaxial compressive strength of composite samples increased from 5.26 MPa to 14.61 MPa. The evolution of the deformation localisation zone of the composite samples is closely related to the initiation and propagation of the primary cracks in the coal samples. At the moment when the main fracture of the coal samples occurs, there is a large drop after the peak of the stress-strain curve of the composite samples, and the height of the rock samples increased to varying degrees, which indicated that the failure of the coal samples induced the rebound deformation of the rock samples. With the increase in rock-coal height ratios, the rebound deformation amount of the rock samples decreased from 0.042 mm to 0.008 mm, and the rebound deformation rate decreased from 0.210 per cent to 0.010 per cent. Meanwhile, the rock samples’ rebound deformation releases part of the elastic energy to act on the coal sample, further contributing to the destruction of the coal samples. Compared with single composite coal samples, the coal samples of the composite samples have much more failures. In addition, with the increase in rock-coal height ratio, the input energy density, elastic energy density, post-peak release energy density, and residual elastic energy density of the composite samples increased, the dissipation energy density decreased, and the percentage of pre-peak elastic energy density increased from 98.56 per cent to 99.86 per cent. These results revealed the deformation failure characteristics of rock-coal composite with different height ratios and provided a theoretical reference for understanding the underground dynamic rock failures.

There is often a difference in opinion about the allocation of risk in the establishment of mine closure bonds or financial assurances. From the State’s perspective, protection is needed to ensure that the broader community is not left with the liability of properly closing a mine in the event of a default by the mine operator. Such a default might occur where an operator decides to abandon a site, perform incomplete rehabilitation, becomes insolvent or claims limited liability. On the other hand, mine operators who can demonstrate a strong financial position plus a record of social and environmental commitment and performance, argue that there should be some recognition of this in setting a bond that is less than the full cost of early closure. They argue that a mine rehabilitation bond based on the full cost of early closure is overly conservative and ignores the actual risk of the operator being in default. Dr Eric Bumstead is to be commended for his recent paper on gold analysis, published in the March 1984 Proceedings. It is not often that someone in industry, rather than academia, takes the time to collect and report on such a volume of data, data which is of interest to everyone involved in gold exploration and development.After reading the paper I felt, as a geochemist and as ayer, that there was another side to this whole question of analysis that few people are aware of, i.e. the problem facing a laboratory and how the laboratory can try to give the customer maximum value for money spent.Analyses for gold are carried out for different reasons, depending on the aims of the geologist or metallurgist who presents the samples. These can broadly be separated into three classes, to answer the following questions.1. "Is there any gold in this sample?"2. "Approximately how much gold is there in this sample?"3. "How much gold is there in this sample?"In every case there is a different balance between accuracy and precision, cost and avoiding chemical problems. By "chemical problems", I mean such possibilities as samples containing high levels of sulphides, gold present as tellurides, cyanide being present, contamination with mercury, and other mineralogical oddities, plus problems such as samples containing grease.There is no such thing as one assay to cover all possibilities.Samples in category I come mostly from early stages of exploration.There are often large numbers of samples, their mineralogy is not well known and hence chemical problems could exist, but the explorer wants assays at a minimum level of precision and expects minimum cost. These characteristics do not easily come together, for although the precision required is low, the accuracy required is high at low levels. A small positive result when the true answer is nil could lead to a fruitless search and a waste of money. Conversely, a nil result, when the true answer is a small but significant level of gold, could lead to the passing over of an area that may warrant further work.Because there are conflicting requirements for this type of assay, the methods chosen must be a compromise and different assayers will balance these requirements differently and come to different conclusions. The methods cover sample preparation, assay sample size and variations in assay techniques.
